The best and brightest students are the shining stars in our community. They stand poised to start a journey that may one day make a difference in our futures – in the fields of medicine and health care, in our environment and the way we live, and how we work and play in a changing world driven by technology. They’ve dreamed of a college education – critical to quality of life – and excelled academically during their high school careers. They became involved in extracurricular activities and volunteered in their communities. They are driven to go the distance. Now they are ready to join the 17.4 million students enrolled in the nation’s colleges and universities this fall, up from the 13.8 million students 20 years ago, according to the U.S. Census 2010. The cost of a college education continues to rise at almost alarming rates. Scholarships are becoming more important than ever before in helping to keep the level of debt for the student at a manageable level. Since 1983 the cost of tuition has risen more than 400 percent at a time when wages have not kept up. In addition, federal and state support per pupil has decreased. The competition is fierce and the average in-state tuition at four-year UW-institutions is $7,000. In-state tuition at UW-Madison for a semester is $10,609. Investing in the many young faces you see inside this special section – youth who are friends, neighbors and family members – is sure to make a difference in generations to come. “The Fond du Lac Area Foundation is pleased to again partner with The Reporter in producing this tribute to the bright, accomplished students who have been awarded post secondary education scholarships,” said Foundation Executive Director Sandi Roehrig. “Scholarships are a reward for many years of dedicated study. In these challenging economic times filled with jobs cuts, it is increasingly important for young people to get post secondary education to give them the skills they need to compete in the ever-changing job market,” Roehrig said. When Roehrig started college at a University of Wisconsin school in 1969, the price of her college tuition was about $700 a year. “Scholarships weren’t that necessary,” she said. “Now, with current costs of college tuition, it is almost impossible for families to afford to pay without a scholarships, grants or loans. Through the generosity of many donors, the students included in Celebrating Scholars will have the wonderful benefit of assistance with paying for their education,” Roehrig said. The students showcased in this use of Celebrating Scholars have earned scholarships ranging from about $400 for one year to few to a rare few who will receive full tuition for four years. The young recipients pictured on these pages were educated within the halls of the public and private high schools located within the Fond du Lac area. The Fond du Lac Area Foundation is grateful to the many local people who have established a total of 63 scholarship funds to benefit area students. These donors understand the value of education and want to ensure that other local students also have a chance to get the education they will need to succeed in the future. This publication lists more than 400 scholarships. However, a number of students received more than one. The list is by no means complete. It also includes scholarships awarded from outside the Area Foundation. Hats off to the great contributions parents, teachers and school administrators make in helping our youth achieve success. The Reporter also thanks the advertisers for supporting a publication that will become a keepsake for proud families.
