Try out a tandem kayak, a sit-on-top kayak, a Come join Campus Recreation and Outdoor Adventures as we teach you ABCs of Kayaking and Stand Up Paddle Boarding. Class will meet at the indoor USA swimming pool. touring kayak, and a recreational kayak to decide what best suits you from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. We will teach you how to hold a paddle, how to enter and exit your “ride” and how to go, turn, and stop. Most importantly, we will have you practice a wet entry; we will dump you over in the deep end of the pool and teach you how to right and re-enter a kayak both with and without help. Develop the self-confidence to join us on future trips.

All participants will receive a $5 discount on any Outdoor Adventures trip taken during Fall semester. Hike & Camp the Chinnabee Silent Trail and Paddle the Coosa River August 30 – September 1

The Chinnabee Silent Trail has the most varied terrain of any trail in Talladega National Forest with waterfalls, swimming holes, wildlife rich woodlands and 1 mile of steep 30 rock climbing degrees. Paddle three hours on Coosa River, passing Class 1, II, and III rapids over the 6.8 mile run. Although intimidating to look at,

most of the rapids are manageable for novice to intermediate paddlers. The banks are lined with oaks, magnolia, dogwood, azaleas, and interesting rock formations, including dozens of islands for stopping and relaxing in the middle of the river. Cost (per person): $60 for students and their family members, $70 for

staff/faculty/alums and their family members, $80 for non-USA. Price includes: tent, sleeping bag, backpack, cooking gear, kayaks, canoes, transportation; does not include food. Trip limit: Maximum 14, minimum of 8.

Mandatory pre-trip meeting is Wednesday, August 27, Student Recreation Center.

Day 1 – Leave Rec Center at 7:00 a.m. and drive five hours – just past Talledega – to Lake Chinnabee. Hike (with backpacks) for three miles and set up camp in an isolated spot near a series of waterfalls and a great swimming hole around 4 p.m. We will “chill” in the swimming hole, collect firewood, eat dinner, and share tales around the campfire. Day 2 – Get up at 7 a.m., break camp, and hike about 1/2 mile to a new camp site (and our van) and set up camp. We will drive about 4 miles to a mountain top restaurant with spectacular vistas of the National Forest for a late morning buffet breakfast. Then, drive back to camp and without backpacks, hike to Caney Head atop Talladega Mountain (2100 feet above mean sea level) with the last mile presenting an extremely steep, rock-scrambling climb. Continue to hike if you desire along any of the many Pinhoti Trails. Return to camp by dinner. Day 3 – Break camp at 7 a.m. Drive two hours and put in on Coosa around 9 a.m. Paddle 7 miles in 4 hours. Leave for Mobile around 2 p.m., return around 6 p.m.

HOT AIR BALLOONING Saturday September 6 COST (PER PERSON) Group of 3 (with a total weight under 600 lbs.): $155 per person. Group of 4 (with a total weight under 600 lbs.): $120 per person. We will supply transportation, you supply yourself. Brunch is not included. Children as young as six may fly; HOWEVER, they must not be of the timid nature because the balloon burners do make a somewhat intimidating noise and the height can prove somewhat “challenging” for the vertically challenged. Trip limit: 6 to 8 (dependent upon weight of participants.)

COME JOIN CAMPUS RECREATION AND OUTDOOR ADVENTURES FOR A HOT AIR BALLOON RIDE We will “fly like an eagle” 1500 feet above the ground and enjoy breathtaking sights of the Eastern Shore of the Bay. No work involved; just relax and enjoy the majestic views.

Check out Alabama Gulf Coast Hot Air Ballooning for more info on our trip leader Due to air patterns, we will be flying in the early morning. We will depart from Campus Recreation 90 minutes prior to sunrise and arrive at our destination in Magnolia Springs, AL., 30 minutes prior to sunrise. We will split into 2 groups of three – four (weight maximum of 600 lbs. per flight); each of the two groups will get to fly for 20 to 30

minutes as the other group “gives chase” in a pursuit car. The balloon will land “where it chooses” and the next group will swap out. At ballooning’s end, we will go out as a group for brunch and brag about our trip.

FULL MOON PADDLE Tuesday, September 9th

We will depart from the Scott’s Landing on the Causeway, paddle up the Blakeley River, and then dip into surrounding waterways and head into Justin's Bay. We will pass by alligators, jumping fish, and other “creatures of the night.” In Justin’s Bay, we will tie up the canoes and kayaks on the water and have a picnic dinner as we gaze at the stars and of course watch the gorgeous “moon over Mobile” rise in the sky. Meet at Scott’s Landing at 7 p.m.; put in around 7:30 p.m., paddle and return to Scott’s Landing around 10:00 p.m. If you need a ride from campus, let us know.

Cost (per person): $10 for students and their family members, $15 for staff/faculty/alums and their family members, $20 non-USA. We will supply kayaks and canoes and transportation, you supply dinner and flashlights. How to sign-up: Leave a check for the full amount payable to “U.S.A.” (sorry, no cash) along with your name and cell phone number at the Front Desk of the Student Recreation Center. We will call you to confirm your place on the trip along with more information. We will accept registrants until day prior to trip is space allows. Fee is non-refundable within 2 days of trip UNLESS we can replace you or trip is canceled. Checks will not be deposited until completion of trip; if trip is canceled, all fees will be refunded. Trip limit: maximum of fourteen, minimum of eight.

Saturday, September 13th

Perdido River This is an easy float trip with no rapids and will be fun for both beginners and advanced paddlers. The Perdido River demarcates the state line between Alabama and Florida. We will begin our trip at Barrineau Park and then be taken by a semi-swift current for 4 miles along remote pine and oak wooded areas. We’ll see lots of NO TRESPASSING signs and private hunting camps and small bayous, bogs, and feeder streams that can be navigated for short distances and provide an environment much different from that of the river. We will pack lunch and eat on the river.

Leave Campus Rec at 8:00 a.m. Drive one hour to Barrieneau Park, “set sail” around 10 a.m. and paddle/play on the river for about four hours. Return to the Student Recreation Center around 5:00 p.m.

Cost $20 for students and their family members, $25 for faculty/staff/alums and their family members, $30 for all others. Fee includes transportation, canoes, kayaks and accessories. Does not include food (we will provide coolers).

Trip limit: Maximum of 14, minimum of 8.

Coastal Clean-Up Saturday, September 20th Campus Recreation and Outdoor Adventures are helping students get involved with the annual Coast CleanUp which takes place this year on Saturday, September 20th. Hundreds of volunteers will descend on Alabama coast lines to clean the trash and litter that accumulates over the course of the year. USA will have 50 to 80 students volunteering at the City Park. All volunteers are asked to work until noon and will be given tshirts and hot dogs. If you would like to volunteer, send your name and cell phone number to rhunter@southalabama.edu and we will send you more details.
