September 2016- Vol 2016, Issue 9

Hello Chamber members,

It is of greatest pleasure to finally introduce myself to all of you. My name is Jessica and I am the new Executive Director for your Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce. Originally from Morton and relocating from Bloomington, I have spent the majority of my life in Central Illinois. I received a BS in Business focused in Hospitality from DePaul University in Chicago, and am in the process of finishing my Masters in Political Science with a focus on community and economic development from Illinois State University. I have spent time consulting on business development abroad, executing research in community development and tourism, as well as working in the hotel industry.

Over the next year, the Chamber staff, Board, and myself will be working diligently to assess the current Chamber and add the most value possible to your membership. If there are ways that you think that can be done, please reach out and provide us with that input. A Chamber is only as active and strong as its membership is, and I would like to see us all excel together. I am very excited to make this transition to both living and working in Galesburg, and want all of you to know that I am here to serve you. If we have not yet had a chance to meet (or even if we have), I hope you will be able to make it to the Meet n’ Greet to say hello. Make note that my phone is always on and my door is always open, so please feel free to call, email, or stop by. I look forward to talking to each and every one of you in the coming months.

All the best,

You work hard. Hard work is expected from all of us. We go to work each day and are expected to perform our tasks at a high level. That can be harder than you think. We all NEED to take time away from work. Take a vacation. We accumulate vacation time and we never use it. We have become a nation of “work martyrs.” Dedication is good. But, step away from your computer and take a vacation! According to the U.S. Travel Association “America’s time off habits, or lack thereof, have resulted in a record-setting waste of 658 million vacation days. More than half of American workers (55%) left vacation time unused in 2015 and forfeited a total of 222 million days.” It wasn’t always like this. For decades Americans used to take an average of 20.5 days off a year. However, for the last 15 years, vacation days have been on the decline. They are there for us to use, but we never get around to it. When we don’t take a vacation, it costs the travel industry. “Had Americans used the vacation time they earned in 2015, it would have meant $223 billion in spending for the U.S. economy. Servicing the needs of those unused vacation days would have created 1.6 million jobs, resulting in $65 billion in additional income. If Americans were to just use one more day, it would be $34 billion in total spending for the U.S. economy.”

more time off.”

Planning ahead, is a great way to help your boss support a vacation. Planners use more time than “non-planners.” 51% of planners used all of their vacation time, where 39% of non-planners did.

Vacations translate to less stress and more happiness at home. When we string together weeks and months, even years, of monotonous work, it weighs on us mentally. Taking a break can make home a better place.

To find out what’s at the root of the vacation decline, Project: Time Out conducted a survey of US workers. Project: Time Out is leading a national movement to transform American attitudes and change behavior. They have an “aim to shift culture so that taking time off is understood as essential to personal wellbeing, professional success, business performance and economic expansion.”

Take a look at the chart of answers from the survey. Project: Time Out contends that change depends on managers. “80 percent of employees said if they felt fully supported and encouraged by their boss, they would be likely to take
