Bienvenidos como cada mes a las páginas de Taxi Magazine. En este número nos acercamos a un verdadero genio del inglés: Richard Vaughan. Una entrevista en profundidad permite conocer a la persona que ha revolucionado el aprendizaje de este idioma con un método fácil, práctico pero sobre todo efectivo. En este noviembre, les proponemos visitar dos espacios expositivos: El Museo del Greco en Toledo y el Museo del Romanticismo.
Como escapada le recomendamos una de las ciudades con mayor patrimonio histórico y cultural dentro de nuestras fronteras: Lorca. La ciudad continua recuperándose de los efectos devastadores del terremoto sufrido en mayo y para ello, cuenta con la colaboración de lorquinos y visitantes. No nos olvidamos de nuestras habituales propuestas escénicas. Este mes el abanico es variado: la magia infantil de la Cenicienta se combina con los mejores gags de Los Morancos El teatro Fernán Gómez nos brinda también una producción propia: Los Ojos. Un melodrama basado en la búsqueda de un lugar en el mundo. Las navidades se acercan y los más previsores ya empiezan a plantearse la búsqueda de regalos. Our in-depth interview allows readers to hear from the man who has revolutionized the teaching of this language with a method that is easy, practical and, above all, effective. Meanwhile, this November we encourage you to visit two exhibition facilities: The El Greco Museum in Toledo and the Museum of Romanticism in Madrid

Teatros del Canal, Teatro de la Abadía y sala Cuarta Pared vuelven a ser protagonistas de más de veinte espectáculos de danza en la nueva edición del certamen. En esta ocasión, los países invitados son Alemania, Canadá, Italia, Japón, Polonia y Reino Unido que aportan al programa actualidad, estilos diversos, nuevas creaciones y visiones innovadoras. Creaciones de ámbito nacional e internacional destacan en el cartel previsto. Entre las actuaciones más importantes está el trabajo de Teresa Nieto, que estrena Petit comité. Fuera de las fronteras españolas regresa Édouard Lock con su emblemática compañía La La La Human Step tras diez años de ausencia de los escenarios. El ingrediente especial del certamen es la celebración de la tercera Ventana de la Danza Madrileña, un espacio para dar a conocer a los jóvenes artistas y directores que se revelan como la nueva alternativa de la creación coreográfica. Teatros del Canal, Teatro de la Abadía and the Sala Cuarta Pared once again host over 20 dance shows at the latest edition of the event. On this occasion the guest countries are Germany, Canada, Italy, Japan, Poland and the UK, bringing the current lineup modernity, a variety of styles, new creations and innovative approaches. Both national and international productions will be featured on marquees. Among the most eagerly-awaited shows will be that from Teresa Nieto, who will be debuting Petit comité. From beyond Spanish borders comes Édouard Lock with his emblematic company La La La Human Step after ten years absent from the stage. Finally, the event’s special component this year is the celebration of the third “Window on Madrid Dance” forum, promoting young artists and directors representing promising new alternatives in the field of choreographical creation. La compañía catalana Comediants aterriza en Madrid proveniente del mismísimo reino de los muertos. Ellos siempre eligen temas elementales y universales para sus creaciones: la fiesta, el sol, el fuego, la noche, el agua, los sueños, el tiempo, el mar, el juego. La vida, en definitiva. Ahora miran hacia la muerte sin perder su tono colorista y vital, por paradójico que parezca. Movidos por la reflexión del paso del tiempo, por aquello de que todos nos hacemos mayores y empezamos a darle vueltas al asunto de la finitud, la compañía que dirige Joan Font ha querido dar todo el protagonismo de este espectáculo a la dama macabra. Pero no con oscuridad, sino partiendo del mito de Perséfone, la hija de Zeus y Demeter, que fue secuestrada por Hades, dios de los bajos fondos, para casarse con ella. Su madre consiguió finalmente que seis meses los pasara con ella, floreciendo sobre la tierra (así explica la mitología griega la primavera y el verano) y otros seis en el reino de los muertos con Hades (temporada otoño-invierno). De la mano de Perséfone, viajamos por entre personajes enmascarados, creencias y leyendas sobre la muerte. The Catalonian company Comediants arrives in Madrid, hailing from the very realm of the dead. The always choose elemental and universal themes for their creations: celebration, the sun, fire, the night, water, dreams, the weather, the sea, games. In short: life. Now they look at death without losing their colorful and lively tone, as paradoxical as that may seem. Spurred by a reflection on the passage of time, that we all get older and begin to ponder the issue of our finitude, the company directed by Joan Font chooses to place the dreaded queen squarely in the spotlight. But not in a dark fashion, but based on the myth of Persephone, the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, who was kidnapped by Hades, god of the netherworld, to marry her. Her mother finally managed for her to spend 6 months of the year with her, flourishing on earth (thus does Greek mythology explain the spring and summer) and 6 in the realm of the dead, in Hades (the fall and winter). Persephone takes us on a journey full of shadowy characters, beliefs and legends revolving around death.

Dicen que en el New York Times se escribió de Chicago como la mejor comedia musical de todos los tiempos. Durante tres meses, la producción que viene de triunfar en Barcelona estará otra vez en Madrid, en el Nuevo Alcalá, con un elenco comandado por Manuel Bandera (Cabaret, La bella y la bestia) y Marta Valverde (Mamma Mia!, My fair lady). Chicago cuenta una historia real y atemporal sobre amor, avaricia y pasión. Roxie Hart y Velma Kelly son dos mujeres ambiciosas encerradas por crímenes pasionales, que luchan por ganarse el favor de Billy Flynn, un famoso abogado que utiliza a la prensa sensacionalista para conseguir la libertad de sus clientes. Todo eso en mitad de un espectáculo de jazz incomparable. For three months the production, in the wake of its smash run in Barcelona, will be back in Madrid at the Nuevo Alcalá Theater, with a cast headlined by Manuel Bandera (Cabaret, Beauty and the Beast) and Marta Valverde (Mamma Mia!, My Fair Lady). Chicago tells a realistic and timeless tale of love, greed and passion. Infinita es otra magnífica oportunidad para disfrutar de una de las compañías teatrales más sorprendentes de Europa, la Familie Flöz. Son alemanes y destilan poesía y humor, ternura y mucho arte. Ya estuvieron aquí, hace unas temporadas, en el teatro La Abadía, y el impacto ha quedado perenne en la retina de cuantos lo pudieron disfrutar. Ahora llegan al Matadero con Infinita, que habla de los primeros y últimos momentos en la partida final entre la vida y la muerte. Al principio, en el tiempo de la vida, ocurren incontables maravillas. Luego pasan los años y va llegando la fragilidad, o va volviendo más bien, porque nacer y morir están más cerca de lo que se piensa. Infinita es un mosaico físico de la vida, compuesto con simpleza y virtuosismo, un breve vistazo en la inmensidad del nacimiento, del sexo y de la muerte, y en todo aquello que resulta, además, cómico. Las inquietantes máscaras de la Familie Flöz harán el resto. As Infinita is another great opportunity to enjoy one of Europe’s most impressive theater companies: the Familie Flöz. These Germans fuse poetry, humor, tenderness and great skill. They were here a few seasons ago at the La Abadía Theater and nobody who was fortunate enough to catch the show has forgotten it. Now they come to El Matadero with Infinita, which speaks of the first and last moments of life and death. In the beginning, during the era of life, endless marvels occur. Later, the years pass and fragility sets in, or returns, rather, for being born and dying are more closely linked than one imagines. Infinita is a physical mosaic of life, executed with simplicity and virtuosity, a brief look at the immensity of birth, sex and death - and all that which is comical about it too. The Familie Flöz’s eerie portrayals do the rest.
El pasado mes de agosto, en el marco del festival de teatro de Mérida, tuvo lugar el Juicio a una zorra. El encuentro entre sus dos máximos responsables, el director y dramaturgo (también actor) Miguel del Arco y la actriz Carmen Machi, sucedió mucho antes y saltaron chispas… de magia escénica. Cuando se juntan semejantes talentos, sólo se pueden esperar grandes noches de teatro. Así ocurrió en Mérida, y todavía se habla de ello, y así se espera que ocurra en La Abadía con este monólogo en el que la Machi se mete en la piel de Helena de Troya, la mujer más hermosa del mundo. La hija de Zeus. La que ha sido vilipendiada a lo largo de los siglos como la adúltera, la puta, la causante de la guerra más devastadora de la antigüedad. Entrañable, apasionada y dolida, sin pelos en la lengua, Helena reivindica su dignidad y suspira por el olvido en este juicio a la luz de la eternidad. No quiere el perdón, porque lo único que hizo fue amar a un hombre por encima de todo. Sólo quiere que la dejen en paz. Last August at the Merida Theater Festival Juicio a una zorra (Trollop On Trial) was performed. The two people behind the show, its director and playwright (and also an actor) Miguel del Arco and actress Carmen Machi, came together much earlier, and sparks flew ... of on- stage magic. When such talents come together one can only expect great theater. This was what happened in Merida, and people are still talking about it, and this is what is expected to occur at the La Abadía Theater with this monologue in which Machi plays Helen of Troy, the most beautiful woman in the world. The daughter of Zeus. The woman who has been vilified down through the centuries as the adulteress, the whore who triggered Antiquity’s most devastating war. Charming, passionate and hurt, and without mincing any words, Helena defends her dignity and longs to be forgotten in this trial, seen from a sweepingly historical perspective. She seeks no forgiveness, for the only thing she did was to love a man above everything else. She only wishes to be left alone.

La temporada de conciertos del PluralEnsemble 2011/12 es todo un despliegue de actividades a la altura de una institución, todo un logro para un conjunto dedicado a la música contemporánea. Se trata de un total de 24 conciertos. Quince de ellos se desarrollan en Madrid, con siete citas en el Auditorio Nacional de Música y otros siete en la sede de la Fundación BBVA. The PluralEnsemble’s 2011-12 season is a complete lineup of activities, all up to the entity’s standards, every bit the achievement for a group dedicated to contemporary music. 24 concerts will be played. 15 of them will be performed in Madrid, with 7 at the National Music Auditorium, and another 7 at the BBVA Foundation’s headquarters. El director argentino Pablo Messiez regresa al Fernán Gómez con su último trabajo Los ojos, tras haber subido a su escenario Muda y Ahora. Un estreno absoluto producido por el propio Teatro Fernán Gómez. Los Ojos es un melodrama basado en la búsqueda de un lugar en el mundo, la fragilidad de las relaciones y la capacidad de esclarecer el pasado que posee la distancia. El amor, la tierra y la vista, o bien la falta de cualquiera de las tres cosas, explican la historia de una madre y su hija que abandonaron Argentina arrastradas por el amor de Natalia hacia un italiano del que nunca más se supo. La hija, Marianela, encuentra el amor junto a Pablo, un ciego que nunca vio, pero que reconoce el mundo por sus texturas, voces, olores y sabores. Entre tanto, una oftalmóloga le promete que puede devolverle la vista. En definitiva, cuatro historias que se embarcan en la búsqueda del lugar dónde deben estar, intuyendo que será aquel donde haya alguien que les ame.

Argentine director Pablo Messiez returns to the Fernán Gómez Theater with his latest work Eyes, after having already staged his productions Mute and Now. This is an first-time-ever premiere, produced by the Fernán Gómez Theater itself. Eyes is a melodrama based on the search for one’s place in the world, the fragility of relationships, and how distance may enable one to achieve clarity about the past. Love, one’s land, and sight - or the lack of any of these three things, rather - underpin the story of a mother and daughter who left Argentina, swept away by Natalia’s love for an Italian who was never heard from again. The daughter, Marianela, finds love alongside Pablo, a blind man who has never seen, but who recognizes the world through its textures, voices, smells and flavors. Meanwhile, an ophthalmologist promises that he can allow him to see. In short, four stories which revolve around the search for the place where one belongs - with the implication that this will probably be where there is someone who loves you.

La Cenicienta, la mayor historia jamás contada, sube al escenario con una original versión musical de la mano de Lazona y la compañía teatral La Ratonera. Esta nueva adaptación del clásico infantil de Perrault se cuenta, en esta ocasión, a través de un grupo de cómicos ambulantes, nómadas que viajan contando historias sorprendentes para divertir a todos. Este rasgo es lo que diferencia esta versión de las anteriores, Cenicienta forma parte de un cuento mayor, el de la compañía Le Petit Theatre. Este montaje huye de los tópicos de la joven bella que busca al príncipe ideal, haciendo alago a otros valores como la amistad, el trabajo, el respeto, el amor y la tolerancia. Han dejado de lado conceptos obsoletos y apuestan por una versión más comprometida con la sociedad actual. Los textos y canciones creadas por Gema Martín y Roberto C. Berrio, responsable del montaje, se entremezclan entre ambas historias y hacen partícipes a los más pequeños a través de guiños especiales. Un espectáculo que se puede ver, oír, tocar, oler y degustar, un verdadero placer para todos los sentidos.

Cinderella, the greatest story ever told, takes the stage in this original musical version by Lazona and the La Ratonera theater company. This new adaptation of the classic Perrault children’s story is told this time by a group of travelling performers, nomads who go about sharing surprising tales to everyone’s delight. This aspect is what sets this version apart from those preceding it, as Cinderella forms part of a larger story: that of the Le Petit Theatre company. This rendering sheds the clichés of the beautiful young princess in search of her prince, upholding other values such as friendship, work, respect, love and tolerance. Outmoded concepts are abandoned in this version, adapted to society today. The dialogue and songs written by Gema Martín and Robert C. Berrio, responsible for the production, borrow from both intertwining stories and involve young audiences through a series of invitations to become part of the show. These prompts are intended to offer audiences a unique experience, a show that one can see, hear, touch, smell and taste, a genuine pleasure for all the senses.

Los artistas sevillanos regresan para hacer reír a los asistentes en un espectáculo que repasa sus personajes más famosos, así como los gags, parodias y scketches nunca vistos antes y muchas más novedades. Para el deleite del público, teniendo como base el humor, hacen uso de una fórmula “médica” descubierta para hacer frente a la crisis. Procedentes de Sevilla y nacidos en el barrio de Triana, Jorge y César Cadaval comienzan desde muy jóvenes su andadura en los escenarios con su particular humor. The Sevillian comics return to crack audiences up with a show featuring all their most well-known characters, along with gags, parodies and sketches never seen before, and a bunch of new material. Hailing from Seville and born in the neighborhood of Triana, Jorge and César Cadaval started their stage careers very young with their signature sense of humor. El único museo de España dedicado a la figura del pintor Domenico Theotocopulos, ‘El Greco’, ha reabierto sus puertas de nuevo. Tras cinco años de clausura por reformas, se desarrolla una nueva etapa en la que se renueva el lenguaje visual, el discurso y la interpretación de sus colecciones. Coincidiendo con el centenario de la creación de la institución se apuesta por el rigor y la veracidad expositiva. Es por ello, que en contra de lo que siempre se pensaba, en la exposición se explica que la antigua ‘Casa’ nunca perteneció al ‘El Greco’, sino al marqués de la Vega-Inclán, el indiscutible protagonista de la recuperación y difusión de su pintura. En realidad, Domenico llegó a Toledo en 1576 y se instaló en una vivienda más modesta a unos doscientos metros del Museo, donde pasó su vida junto a Jerónima de las Cuevas y su hijo Jorge Manuel.

Spain’s only museum dedicated to Domenico Theotocopulos, a.k.a. “The Greek” (El Greco) has reopened its doors. After five years of closure for renovations, a new era begins presenting and explaining the images, themes and dynamics at play in its collection. Coinciding with the centennial of the institution’s founding, the greatest effort has been to assure interpretive rigor and accuracy. Thus, contradicting longstanding beliefs, the exhibition explains that the old “House” never actually belonged to El Greco, but to the Marquis of Vega-Inclán, without any doubt the man behind his painting’s popularization and diffusion. In reality Domenico arrived in Toledo in 1576 and settled into a more modest home some two hundred yards from the Museum, where he spent his life with Jerónima de las Cuevas and their son Jorge Manuel. >

The ideal place to learn about the life of El Greco, everything about him as a figure and the influence of his work in 17th century Toledo. Moreover, the old House-Museum’s different areas have been recreated in order to transport visitors to the era during which the painter worked. The exhibit’s premiere pieces are its Apostolate series, The Tears of St. Peter and its View and Plan of Toledo. The collection is rounded out by paintings by Luis Tristán, Murillo, Valdés Leal and other artists. The renovations both take visitors back in time while also introducing new technologies to facilitate understanding and learning. Pinturas, acuarelas, dibujos y estampas de la primera mitad del siglo XIX, procedentes del Museo Nacional Pushkin, se muestran en el Museo del Romanticismo. Con motivo de la celebración del Año Dual España-Rusia, llega a España un conjunto de piezas de excepcional calidad pertenecientes al romanticismo ruso. La muestra hace un recorrido por la época y los artistas coetáneos a Pushkin que compartieron sus ideales románticos. En definitiva, cuarenta obras que hacen un repaso por sus raíces, desde una perspectiva histórica. La exposición en una única sala se divide en dos espacios Escenarios y Protagonistas, que hacen un recorrido por el panorama social, artístico y cultural de Rusia entre 1810 y 1850. En Escenarios se explora el concepto de lo cotidiano a través de las vivencias de dos ciudades rusas, Moscú y San Petersburgo, frente a los paisajes exóticos de la geografía del país, captados a través de luces doradas que llevan a la confusión entre la realidad y la ensoñación. Además, completan este enfoque los lugares de interés social de la época como los salones de reunión, los parques, paseos o teatros.
Paintings, watercolors, drawings and prints from the first half of the 19th century from the Pushkin Museum, on display at the Museum of Romanticism. On the occasion of the Spain- Russia Dual Year, this set of pieces of exceptional quality, created during the Romantic era in Russia, come to Spain. The exhibit looks at Pushkin’s era and the contemporaries who shared his romantic ideals. 40 works presenting his roots from a historical perspective. The exhibition, in one room, is divided into two spaces: Settings and Leaders, which provide an examination of the social, artistic and cultural scene in Russia from 1810 to 1850. Settings explores the concept of the mundane through a look at the two Russian cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg, in comparison to the exotic landscapes found across the country, captured through golden lights which blur the line between reality and dream. This focus is rounded out by places of social interest during the period, like its meeting rooms, parks, promenades and theaters.>

> Las principales figuras de la cultura e historia rusa del Romanticismo están representados en la sala Protagonistas, los cuales jugaron un papel esencial en la vida y obra de Puskhin. Una selecta galería de retratos, género fundamental del Romanticismo, que se realizaban con la intención de transportar al lienzo el alma del retratado a través de unos rostros captados con elevadas dosis de expresividad. Un auténtico viaje en el tiempo ambientado por dos lámparas arañas colgadas en el techo y acompañadas por el color dorado de las paredes en Protagonistas y un intenso rojo para Escenarios. A modo de gabinete emula la colocación de las obras en el Museo Pushkin así como, el conjunto de todos los elementos decorativos recrea una sala de baile propia de un palacete ruso. A pesar de la distancia física entre ambos países, a lo largo de la exposición se revelan curiosas afinidades con su homónimo español. La selección de obras pone en diálogo a grandes figuras del romanticismo, como Orest Kiprensky, Alexandre Briullov o Piotr Sokolov, con las obras del Romanticismo español que alberga el museo. The main cultural and historical figures of Russian Romanticism are presented in the Leaders room - men who played an essential role in Pushkin’s life and work. A select gallery of portraits, a genre essential to Romanticism, which were created in order to capture the soul of the subject through visages depicted in the most expressive ways. A genuine journey through time, with the mood set by chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, accompanied by gold walls in Leaders, and an intense red for Settings. In an office-like fashion, it mimics the placement of the works in the Pushkin Museum, while a series of decorative elements recreates a ball room at a Russian palace. Despite the physical distance between the two countries, the exhibition reveals curious similarities with works from Spain. The selection of works brings together great Romantic figures, such as Orest Kiprensky, Alexander Briullov and Piotr Sokolov, with the works of Spanish Romanticism housed by the museum.The Spain-Russian Dual Year program is rounded out by children’s workshops, guided tours and talks, among other activities.

Shark enthusiasts are in luck, as the famous, bloodthirsty, aquatic predators are back on the screen. What begins as a dream weekend turns into a nightmare for a group of university students. Sara and her friends take a boat out to a lake house her family has in Louisiana. What promises to be a time of fun in the sun takes a nasty turn when Malik, a college football star, emerges from the water severely injured. Facing a serious emergency, they decide to take their friend to the hospital on the other side of the lake. But on their way, to make matters worse, the boat breaks down in the middle of shark-infested waters, and they have no way to call for help. They have been victims of an act of sabotage which may cost them their lives. With no chance to be rescued they fight to defend themselves and survive long enough to reach dry land. All in all, a hair-raising, spine-chilling adventure starring the typical cast of young actors appearing in this kind of American horror flick.

El Castillo de Lorca, que se puede visitar durante todo el año, ofrece al visitante actividades especiales los fines de semana y festivos, así como las visitas guiadas teatralizadas a la alcazaba, al Parque Arqueológico de la Judería del Castillo, exposiciones en aljibes, talleres, salas de reuniones para empresas, así como la organización de eventos al aire libre en las instalaciones del castillo. Another key location on Witches Night is the Fortress of the Sun, offering a unique experience. Lorca Castle, which can be visited throughout the year, provides visitors with special activities on weekends and holidays, as well as theatrical tours to La Alcazaba (Citadel), the Archaeological Park of the Castle’s Jewish Section, exhibits in aljibe water towers, workshops, meeting rooms for companies, as well as the organization of open-air events at the Castle. A la hora de estudiar inglés, ¿qué nos cuesta más, hablar, entender o escribir? Con mucha diferencia, cuesta más escribir en un inglés que entender, hablar o leer. De hecho, es, en mi opinión, imposible escribir correctamente en un idioma que no has aprendido desde niño, ya que no posees un pacto emocional con el lenguaje, sino un pacto, como máximo, intelectual. El segundo aspecto más difícil de dominar es la comprensión auditiva. Exige fácilmente dos mil horas de exposición a toda la riqueza fonética del idioma para hacerse con la capacidad auditiva necesaria para controlar las situaciones de comunicación. El profesional español muchas veces cree que está entendiendo cuando en realidad está cazando menos del 50%. Es difícil porque las personas reales no hablan como los profesores de inglés, vocalizan mal en muchos casos, arrastran palabras y emplean muchas veces acentos de lo más variopinto. Puede que estén usando palabras y expresiones que el profesional español entendería perfectamente si las viera por escrito, pero su oído no discrimina cómo se enlazan las palabras. Esto le pasa cuando va a ver una película en versión original y solamente entiende el 20%.
When it comes to studying English, what is hardest: speaking, understanding, or writing? Writing is by far the hardest part, before understanding, speaking or reading. In fact, in my opinion it is impossible to write correctly in a language which one has not learned from childhood because you do not have an emotional connection to the language, but rather an intellectual one, at best. The second most difficult aspect to master is listening comprehension. One needs to be exposed for at least 2,000 hours to the language in all its phonetic richness in order to develop the listening ability necessary to ably handle different communicative situations. Spanish professionals often think they are understanding when in reality they are catching less than 50% of what they’re hearing. It is difficult because real people don’t speak like English teachers, enunciate poorly in many cases, slur their speech, and can have all kinds of different accents. They may use words and expressions which the Spanish professional would understand perfectly if he saw them on paper, but his ear cannot discern how the words are connected. This happens when he goes to see a movie in English and only understands 20% of it.
¿Cómo funciona el método Vaughan? El método Vaughan es un camino “cualitativo – cuantitativo – cualitativo”. Me explico. El método Vaughan que imponemos a nuestros profesores está diseñado para convertirles en un dinámico catalizador del aprendizaje, capaz de dotar al ambiente de clase de un ritmo ágil y estimulante. Cuando el alumno llega a ese nivel pre-intermedio, entonces tratamos de convencerle de que vaya a Vaughantown, donde ya no ve profesores, sino que pasa 80 horas seguidas rodeado de angloparlantes voluntarios que cruzan océanos para ayudarnos a dotar a los españoles de oído y confianza. Esta es la parte “cuantitativa”. Los seis días en Vaughantown equivalen a 40 días en Londres, Nueva York o Sidney, simplemente porque el asedio lingüístico es total, 14 horas cada día. Esto es el “sistema Vaughan”.
How does the Vaughan method work? The Vaughan method is a “qualitative – quantitative – qualitative” approach. Let me explain. The Vaughan method inculcated in our teachers is designed to turn them into dynamic catalysts of learning capable of producing class dynamics that are fast-paced and stimulating. When the student reaches that pre-intermediate level we try to convince him to go to VaughanTown where he does not deal with teachers, but spends 80 hours surrounded by English-speaking volunteers who come from overseas to help our Spaniards acquire listening skills and confidence. This is the “quantitative” part. The six days at VaughanTown are equivalent to 40 days in London, New York or Sydney, simply because the linguistic immersion is overwhelming: 14 hours a day. > En España, ¿qué nos falla a la hora de aprender inglés? ¿Qué podríamos hacer para aprenderlo bien? Esta respuesta es fácil: os falta hacer un esfuerzo. Os faltan ganas de verdad de resolver esta carencia formativa. Todos sabemos que el sistema educativo español, con pocas excepciones, enseña el inglés como una serie de fórmulas matemáticas-gramaticales que hay que memorizar para el examen. Así los jóvenes cogen manía a mi idioma o lo rechazan de plano. Ahora bien, después, una vez identificada la imperiosa necesidad de aprender el idioma, normalmente a los 30 años de edad como media, el español ya está con cónyuge, hijos, hipoteca, jefes y más asuntos que le ocupan la mente y el tiempo. Ya no está en una situación mental ni profesional para poder dedicar esas mil o dos horas para resolver el tema del inglés, y por esta razón no hace el esfuerzo necesario. Para llegar a un buen dominio de un segundo idioma, comenzando con ello después de la pubertad, uno ha de invertir en esfuerzo y dinero. Mi libro, “Si quieres, puedes”, que explica cómo resolver el tema del inglés, pero en dos mil horas de trabajo y dedicación, está en su sexta edición.
In Spain, what do we do wrong when we study English? What might we do to learn it well? That answer is easy: you need to make a greater effort. You lack real desire to resolve this educational shortcoming. We all know that the Spanish educational system, with few exceptions, teaches English as a series of mathematical/grammatical formulas which one must memorize for exams. Young people either come to dislike the language, or totally reject it. Then later, when they recognize an urgent need to learn the language, normally at around age 30, Spaniards have spouses, kids, mortgages, bosses and other things on their minds and taking up their time. They are no longer in a mental or professional situation suited to dedicating those 1,000 or 2,000 hours to solve the English problem, so they don’t make the necessary effort. To achieve strong mastery of a second language, when undertaking it after adolescence, one has to make a major investment in terms of effort and money. My book “Si quieres, puedes”, which explains how to solve the English problem, but with two thousand hours of work and dedication, is in its sixth edition.
¿Cree que hay algún método mejor que otro para aprender idiomas? Si es así, ¿cuál es la opción más exitosa según su criterio? El único método eficaz es aquel que convierte al profesor en un fenómeno en clase capaz de deslumbrar a los alumnos. El inglés es tedioso y hasta odioso si el profesor no da la talla. Sin embargo, si el profesor es capaz de dotar el aula de un ambiente divertido, estimulante y productivo, entonces el inglés se hace atractivo. Cualquier método de inglés es eficaz si cae en manos de un fenómeno de la enseñanza… ese catalizador del aprendizaje… cuya forma de ser y forma de enseñar encandila a los alumnos y les impulsa a estudiar hasta las dos de la madrugada, a hilar frases en inglés en los semáforos, a ir a Vaughantown aunque cueste algo de dinero y a hacer todo lo humanamente posible para no perder ni una sola clase. Todo se reduce a la calidad de profesor y el único método bueno es aquel que ayude a que el profesor adquiera lo antes posible estas cualidades.
Do you think there is any method that is better than others to learn languages? If so, what is the most effective option, in your view? The only effective method is one featuring a teacher who is capable of dazzling his students in class. English is tedious and can even be unbearable if the teacher is not up to the task. However, if the teacher is capable of making his classroom fun, stimulating and productive, then English becomes appealing. Any English teaching method is effective in the hands of an excellent teacher…a catalyst for learning… whose personality and way of teaching inspires students and spurs them to study until two in the morning, to compose phrases in English while waiting for stoplights to change, to go to VaughanTown, even though it costs a bit of money, and to do everything humanly possible not to miss one class. Everything boils down to the quality of the teacher, and the only good method is one which helps the teacher to transmit these qualities as soon as possible.
¿Cree que la única forma de dominar perfectamente el inglés es viajando al extranjero durante una temporada? En primer lugar, uno no llega nunca a “dominar perfectamente” el inglés. Para que una estancia en el extranjero sea rentable, es preciso que el alumno ya tenga una base muy sólida gramatical antes de salir. Si va al extranjero con el inglés cogido con alfileres, adquirirá un sin número de fuertes vicios gramaticales por culpa de la imperiosa necesidad de mantener el tipo. Cuando enviamos nuestros alumnos a Vaughantown, sabemos que una semana después vuelven al aula para la fase tercera, una fase controlada y cualitativa. Segundo, si alguien va al extranjero, debe estar un mínimo de dos años si quiere de verdad adquirir un dominio consolidado. Si es menos tiempo, adquirirá un nivel auditivo bastante bueno, pero no aprenderá a expresarse con corrección y aplomo ni a escribir con estilo e impacto. Por último, no hay que ir al extranjero para estudiar inglés. Hay que ir para sumergirse en el idioma con gente real (no profesores). Así se rentabiliza de verdad una estancia en el extranjero.
Do you believe that the only way to perfectly master English is by spending a period overseas? First off, one never manages to “perfectly master” English. In order for an overseas stay to be worthwhile, a student must already have a solid grammatical base before going. If one goes abroad unprepared, with shaky English foundations, he will only develop an infinity of major grammatical errors, as he is forced to struggle just to get by. When we send our students to VaughanTown, we know that they will return to the classroom a week later for the third phase, a controlled and qualitative one. Secondly, when someone goes abroad, he should go for at least two years if he really wants to acquire a strong mastery. In less time he will acquire quite good listening comprehension skills, but will not learn to express himself correctly and with aplomb, nor to write with style and cogency. Finally, one does not need to go abroad to study English. One must immerse himself in the language, with real people (not teachers). That is how one truly gets the most out of a stay abroad.>

Es muy común tener un grupo de tres alumnos, de un mismo nivel de arranque en inglés, pero con necesidades radicalmente distintas. Ahora bien, en muchos casos es poco realista pedir que la gente financie clases individuales, puesto que es muy costoso para muchos presupuestos personales. Ante esto, la única solución es asegurar un profesor de una calidad tal que los alumnos, de necesidades dispares en clase, “se enamoren” del profesor y, como consecuencia, del inglés, y dediquen todo el tiempo personal para cambiar su trayectoria de aprendizaje de modo que llegue a alcanzar, si es posible, velocidades supersónicas. ¿Nos ocurre a menudo que sabemos más inglés del que creemos pero la vergüenza nos bloquea a la hora de intentar expresarnos? ¿Cómo podemos superar estas situaciones? Vaughantown cura todos estos males. El sentido del ridículo, la vergüenza, el miedo escénico, el pánico a hablar… todos estas cosas son complejos psicológicos que empiezan a derrumbarse el tercer día en Vaughantown. Allí, el alumno está asediado de inglés, con un angloparlante diferente cada hora que le habla sin parar, y finalmente empieza a sintonizar. Se da cuenta de que el inglés que usa esa gente que no entendía el primer día es un inglés que ya conoce. También, al tercer día en Vaughantown, se rompe definitivamente esa “correa de transmisión” entre el cerebro y la boca que traducía del castellano al inglés todo lo que el alumno trata de expresar. Al final se le calienta tanto ese mecanismo mental que se aferra al castellano que estalla en mil pedazos y el alumno empieza a hablar en inglés sin pensar y sin preocuparse por los errores que comete. Vaughantown, o una estancia inteligente en el extranjero como la que expliqué más arriba, es un paso obligatorio e ineludible… esa fase segunda cuantitativa.

Do you believe that English teaching should be tailored to the student in order to work well? If so, what variables can be adjusted in order to meet the needs of each person? Teaching should be tailored to the student and based, when possible, on one-to-one classes, as each student has different needs. It is very common to have a group of three students with the same initial English level but with dramatically different needs. Now, in many cases it is not very realistic to ask students to pay for individual classes, as they are very expensive and many cannot afford them. In this case the only solution is to make sure there is a teacher of such high quality that the students, with varying needs in class, “fall in love” with the teacher and, as a result, with English, and dedicate all their personal time to changing their learning habits so that they end up achieving, if possible, supersonic speeds. Does it often happen that we know more English than we think but, out of embarrassment, freeze up when we try to express ourselves? How can we deal with these situations? VaughanTown cures all these ills. The embarrassment, the shyness, the stage fright, the panic when one has to speak… all of these things are psychological issues which begin to evaporate on the third day at VaughanTown. There students are deluged with English, with a different English speaker every hour, who talks to them non-stop, and they ultimately end up getting the hang of it. Students realize that the English that these people use, which they didn’t understand the first day, is an English they already know. On their third day at VaughanTown students also definitively break that “transmission belt” between the brain and mouth which translated everything they wanted to express from Spanish to English. In the end that mental mechanism of clinging to Spanish overheats and blows up into a thousand pieces, and students begin to speak English without thinking or worrying about the mistakes they make. VaughanTown, or an intelligent stay abroad, is an obligatory and essential step… that second quantitative phase.

La tarde es gris. Gris y blanca. Hay una luz que despista al profano, que se sorprende de ver el otoño, y hasta el invierno en el verano. Las calles están mojadas, los adoquines lisos y oscuros brillan por el agua caprichosa, soberbia de poderlo todo, consentida como una niña bonita inmortal que goza, voluptuosa, de su paraíso. Aquí en este lado brilla el asfalto. En la calle principal invadida de salidas a salvo del destello. Por una de ellas se desemboca en la plaza vieja, rodeada de fachadas viejas y estrechas y verticales, bancos de caja camuflados y comercios a sus pies. Hay un quiosco vestido de bronce verdeado. Y está allí desde antes que todo. Hay un surfista bajo la lluvia. Y un hombre le observa, entre orgulloso e inquieto, desde el paseo amplio y gris y luminoso bajo el paraguas. Las olas mueren en hilera sobre la arena y el surfista surca su muerte suave y dulce y espumosa. El hombre está allí observándole. Bajo el agua. Más allá hay una colina que baja al mar, y desde ella y hacia él desfilan vestidos de negro, casi en bandadas, como pájaros negros que se quedan flotando y se hunden y vuelven a flotar. Alimentándose. Más allá de la tierra hay asfalto y cemento, un abismo, y antes casetas de rayas sobre la línea y farolas art decó como si emergiera un barrio de París costero y tenue y brillante, tan caprichoso como el agua. http://unafalsaprimavera.blogspot.com
