ven the most aero machine won’t turn you into Mark Cavendish overnight, but knowing that the homework’s been done to save a watt or two can’t really be a bad thing, can it? Giant may be a latecomer to the aero-bike party, but it’s certainly not lacking in confidence when it comes to the Propel Advanced SL. In fact Giant is so confident, it has challenged Specialized (via Facebook) to a comparison test against the Venge in Spesh’s all-new wind tunnel. We’ve tested the Propel’s rivals, and while their ability to accelerate and hold speed is universally impressive, until now most have suffered compromises. These usually affect the character we appreciate and expect of a bike. For example, stiffness (or lack of) can be an issue, as can an excessively firm ride. Some also suffer in the weight stakes; all that extra shaping to achieve aero advantages inevitably adds mass. The Propel, though, feels like the least compromised aero road bike available. This could be down to Giant’s longer development cycle, with over 80 iterations of the design being investigated, or because it has been analysing the competition. Read Giant’s development notes and you’ll find that the aero-profile down-tube broadens and reshapes specification Weight 7.5kg (L) Frame Advanced SL carbon Fork Advanced SL carbon Gears Shimano Ultegra brakes Giant Speed Control by TRP Wheels Giant P-SLR1 Aero 50mm FINISHING KIT Fizik Arione R3 saddle with Kium rails, Giant Contact SLR Aero bar, Giant Contact SLR stem, RideSense Ant+ cadence sensor, Giant P-SLR1 23mm tyres CYCLING PLUS | Summer 2013 | 19
