kind of thinking is all wrong. For instance I was cruising down the highway and noticed a large BMW that almost hit a Ford F250 truck right in front of me. These are both very large vehicles, yet they still failed to see each other, let alone a motorcycle. We cannot rely on someone else to watch out for us. Especially with all the texting, eating, primping, and facebooking going on these days at 70mph! It’s our own responsibility to look out for ourselves and to have “situational awareness.” I’m not saying those who cause accidents shouldn’t bare some of the blame, but think of about the last time you had an “oops” moment in your car? Ever forget to check your blind spot or check your surroundings when you go to back out of a parking space? I know I have and I can admit that. Being aware of your surroundings should be a part of your riding technique, taking in all the information to the make the proper evasive maneuver should the situation arise. An old friend in the industry once told me “CYA” which means “Cover Your Ass!” The point being, no one can watch out for YOU, but YOU.

We, as bikers choose to ride and understand it’s a calculated risk every time we get on that motorcycle. But that risk can be greatly reduced by being safe. A part of the safety definition really stood out to me is…”freedom from danger.” This is OUR freedom isn’t it? This is how we escape from the rest of the world, relax, and truly enjoy ourselves. So as the season gets into full swing, remember we are ALL a little rusty. Both cars and motorcycles will have to get used to seeing each other out on the road again. So let’s all stay free and safe from danger this season by being aware of each other and sharing the road. Thanks for stopping by and ya’ll enjoy the ride!
