s we swing into the holiday season, we see beauty all around us as we adorn our houses, our trees, and even ourselves with a little glitz and glamour for the festivities. And we at Fresh Vancouver are reminded once again of what it means to be beautiful. Beauty is your best representation of yourself. Beauty is confidence and poise at any age, and with any body shape. Beauty is loving and celebrating yourself and your life; respecting the family bloodlines, the unique circumstances, and the journey through life that has made you who you are today. In this issue of Fresh Vancouver, we are celebrating beauty in all its forms. The winner of the Morgan Crossing Mommy Makeover is Betty Jung, a grandmother who has dedicated her life to her children, her grandchildren, and her husband’s multiple battles with cancer. Amidst all this, Betty survived surgery to remove a lemon-sized tumour from her brain. The Shops at Morgan Crossing banded together to give Betty the royal treatment – a tip-to-toe makeover that allowed Betty to take some much-needed time for herself to rediscover her personal beauty, both inside and out. We also enjoyed a wonderful photo shoot with real women (not models!) looking fabulous in their glamorous holiday gowns. We love these photos because real beauty is not airbrushed; real beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and ages. Our cover story this month features the fabulously beautiful and glamorous Canadian actress Gabrielle Miller, who perhaps says it best: “I don’t like seeing women completely consumed with looking a particular way in the hope that it’s going to fill something up inside them. That’s not where happiness comes from.” This holiday season, celebrate your personal beauty, both inside and out, and love yourself for each and every flaw and imperfection that makes you perfectly you, and perfectly beautiful. Happy Holidays!

leigh bells ring! The question is: do you love them, or does that jingle-jangle make you grit your teeth and shudder? In a recent Squidoo poll, 67 percent of participants said they love Christmas more than any other holiday. Of those who did not like Christmas, 50 percent dislike the family stress and arguments, and 50 percent dislike the over-commercialization of Christmas. So whether you love or hate the holiday season, it seems you’re not alone. And whether you celebrate Christmas, Chanukah, Diwali, Kwanzaa, or another holiday, you may well face these same issues: the family fights, the blowing of budgets, the added stress in our already manically busy lives. But... don’t you just love those moments of giving a special gift to a beloved child? Or the pyjama-clad cosiness of Christmas morning, no matter what the makeup of your family? Whether your family is large or small, whether kids are young or grown, whether time is spent with aging parents or long-time friends, there is an undeniable sense of community during the holidays, and love is truly in the air. That’s what makes the season special for me, and that’s what I look forward to this year as my own children are old enough to get excited for the season and young enough to wait up for Santa. Of course, it helps to have a fabulous party dress, killer makeup techniques and skin that glows for your holiday parties! This issue of Fresh is chock-full of tips to add a little sparkle to your holiday self, plus stress busters, remedies for those dark under-eye circles, and expert surgeon’s recommendations for age-appropriate treatments. Our stunning cover this month is with Vancouver’s own Gabrielle Miller of Corner Gas, Robson Arms, and Sisters&Brothers fame. “Gabe,” as she is known, turns out to be not just another gorgeous face: this down-to-earth mother of one speaks candidly about the pressures of parenting alongside a busy career, the constant struggle to find time for exercise, and the rigours of beauty in the entertainment industry.

Ultherapy:

Say Goodbye to Sagging Skin! By Dr Shehla Ebrahim, MD

F

ew things are as inevitable as gravity’s toll on your skin. One day, all of a sudden, reality stares you square in the face. You might initially think it’s because you did not sleep well the previous night, but eventually you admit that an afternoon nap is not going to solve this issue. It’s a bona fide eyebrow droop! Non-surgical methods to treat laxity of the face and neck are among the most soughtafter solutions in aesthetic medicine. Many technologies to tighten the skin have been introduced in the past, and a variety claim to achieve skin tightening. Yet none have been shown to be consistent and reproducible, and many patients leave dissatisfied. Enter Ultherapy: a novel technology and a quantum leap from other non-surgical, energy-based devices used to tighten and lift the skin. This technology combines ultrasound imaging with acoustic energy to visualize tissue under the skin followed by the precise delivery of energy to the desired depth.

Ultherapy: A Non-surgical Breakthrough

As we get older, our faces sag and wrinkles appear due to gravity and sun. Until recently, the main approach to the improvement of skin laxity was a facelift – an effective but invasive procedure associated with downtime plus a risk of scarring and side effects. Ultherapy using ultrasound is a novel device that delivers energy that tightens the skin without cutting. No scalpels, no needles, no cutting. Ultherapy, however, is not a facelift and does not give the same results as a facelift. A facelift stops the clock. Ultherapy slows down the aging process by creating new structural collagen. As a standalone treatment, Ultherapy may be optimal for surgical candidates who are unwilling or unable to undergo

facial surgery or for those candidates who wish to postpone surgery. The beauty of Ultherapy is that there is no downtime. There is no swelling, bruising or crusting and patients can return to work the same day. It’s aptly called the “lunchtime lift.” Ultherapy uses ultrasound heat to set collagen production into overdrive deep below the skin’s surface. As it kicks in, the brow firms, the jaw line becomes well defined and the neck lifts. It’s a lunchtime lift without any surgery. Even more alluring is that Ultherapy provides an immediate smoothing effect. And since the collagen continues to grow, results actually improve over the course of a few months. More than 90 percent of patients notice improvement in tone, texture and some tightening within a few weeks, and are even more excited with the results after three to six months, when the deep wrinkles become fine lines and eyes appear more open. The duration of response after a single treatment is estimated to last about 1.5 years. The ideal candidate is someone between 35 and 60 with early signs of laxity. These patients see results within three to six months with a single treatment. Patients over the age of 60 may require a second treatment in six months. Many patients are looking to stay competitive in the workforce, which they believe is tied to their appearance. Whether improving their appearance to look more vibrant or for the associated confidence boost, people perceive this to be important and they come into my office looking for help.

Stand Firm in the Face of Gravity

Ultherapy has been extensively publicized in the media as a safe and effective procedure for lifting and tightening of the skin. You may have

10

| fresh Vancouver Issue 10

seen Ultherapy through Dr. Oz, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar or other fashion magazines. Once it was featured on the larger talk shows, the floodgates opened and our phones were ringing off the hook. Be aware that every procedure has risks and side effects if not done properly. With Ultherapy, the heat from the procedure could make you wince, and transient numbness along the jaw line is possible, though temporary. It is, therefore, important to locate an experienced physician to perform the procedure. Ultherapy offers a distinct advantage over other non-surgical alternatives. Most nonsurgical, energy-based devices currently on the market treat only the skin’s surface. Ultherapy goes deeper, providing a different dimension to rejuvenation; depositing energy at very precise depths because it sees and treats at the same time. Treatments can also be individualized according to each patient’s concern. Because the effects occur below the surface, treating specific facial areas individually is certainly possible with Ultherapy. However, most patients select full-face treatments as the best option for a more uniform result.

The “Right” Time for

>> Cosmetic Surgery By Dr Benjamin Gelfant, MD FRCSC

W

hat is the right time for me to have cosmetic surgery? Plastic surgeons are asked this question more commonly than almost anything else. The answer, of course is: “It depends.” What follows is a brief review of general guidelines and is not meant to be specific to your individual situation.

Breast Enhancement

There are a few guidelines for breast enhancement surgery. The average patient for breast augmentation is 33 years old and has two children. There are two main times women come for this surgery. The first is young women in their early twenties who recognize that they are never going to develop much in the way of breast tissue; the second is women with children who have lost pregnancy-related body fat and notice their pre-pregnancy breast tissue

has noticeably shrunk. However, women of all ages, even into their late fifties and sixties, have had this surgery with very satisfying results. Heath Canada restricts the use of siliconefilled implants to women of 22 years and older. In the occasional case of women under 22, we still use saline (salt water) -filled devices (which are still used for some women over 22 as well). Breast lift patients come for surgery after having children when they have developed “significant droop” or after substantial weight loss as part of a larger program of body re-contouring surgery.

Tummy Tuck

You’ve had your children and despite your best efforts, you can’t seem to get your body back. Your abdomen protrudes and there is bulging along your waistline you can pinch… and it is thick. If your weight has stabilized after your last pregnancy, if you exercise and watch what

12

| fresh Vancouver Issue 10

you eat, and despite all this your shape isn’t what you would like, a tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty) may be helpful. Repairing the muscles separated by pregnancy, removing loose and excessive skin, possibly improving on an adherent (stuck down) caesarean section scar, and also removing some excess fat will go a long way towards improving your shape. Should you have a tummy tuck before having children? Probably not, but under certain circumstances the answer will be yes. For example, if you have lost a great deal of weight and have very redundant skin (that will not change with exercise), and if having children is a distant event with no likelihood of occurring soon, it may be worth considering. However, you also need to consider whether the tradeoff is worthwhile. It includes the required incision and, therefore, scar. Sometimes it takes time and every effort to get your shape back on your own before you get to the point of needing help in the form of surgery.

Rejuvenative Facial Surgery

What is the right age to have a facelift or eyelid surgery? The right age to have surgery is when you feel you have sufficient appearance of aging to be willing to undergo a significant surgical operation, its risks, and the necessary recovery period; when the surgeon feels significant benefit would be achieved from the operation; and when your general health is good. For a facelift, this may be at the age of forty, fifty, sixty, or into the seventies. Doing the operation early to make it “more effective” seems to me to be a way of selling the operation to patients before they are ready. It is rare for me to consider a facelift on a patient younger than the early forties. There seem to be two peak age groups: the early to mid-forties, and from fifty through the mid-sixties, although I have done

facelifts on patients in their late seventies. There is no evidence that doing a “mini-facelift” early makes the face age better, but many patients begin to benefit from current techniques by the early forties. However, excellent results may be achieved at any age from the forties through the seventies, when and if the patient feels it is time. Brow lifts, similarly, should be done when the time is right. If there are deep vertical frown lines, they can be treated by muscle reduction whenever present, since drooping of the brows is not uncommon by the mid-thirties. Often, using Botox® may seem like a better option at first, but a brow lift may be something you want to consider. In young patients with genetic bulging of the fat in the lower eyelids, surgery can be well worthwhile, even in the mid-twenties. Many patients who finally come to have the surgery in their thirties and forties have had the same appearance of their lower lids since their teens. These general guidelines can help you de-

13

| fresh Vancouver Issue 10

cide when surgery may be right for you. Everyone’s situation is different. Having a proper consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon is the first step towards surgery, and one for which there is no substitute. In private plastic surgery practice since 1989, Dr. Benjamin Gelfant, MD, has been the director of the Broadway Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Centre since 2000. His private surgery centre has a staff of associate plastic surgeons, anaesthesiologists, a nurse injector for fillers and wrinkle muscles as well as operating room and recovery nurses. He is author of Cosmetic Plastic Surgery: A Patient’s Guide. For more information see www.gelfant.com, www.csaps.ca, and www.surgery.org. Call 604-874-2078 for a personal consultation.

develop as a normal part of aging.”

Home Remedies for Dark Circles

Breakthrough Treatments for Your Baby Black-and-Blues By Liberty Craig

D

o you have such dramatic black bags under your eyes that you feel like you’re going on an unpleasant trip with all that baggage? Or perhaps these under-eye Samsonites are a reminder that you need a vacation! A significant number of men and women experience dark under-eye circles that increase in severity as they age. They can make you appear tired, haggard and malnourished – even when you’re not. And they can make you look older than your years. If you are sick of people asking you if you’re tired or bruised, take heart. “More treatments are available for dark circles under eyes than ever before,” says the Mayo Clinic, “and range from makeup and laser therapy to, in some cases, surgery.” But they go on to warn: “Because results aren’t always perfect, it helps to have realistic expectations.” In this article, we will examine what causes under-eye circles, how you can prevent and treat them with home remedies, plus medical treatments you may wish to try.

What Causes Dark Circles?

There are many causes of under-eye circles, though physiologically speaking there is just one cause: oxidizing hemoglobin. Dark circles are very much like a bruise: blood cells that have found their way into your skin darken when the body processes them. In the case of a bruise, blood seeps into your skin due to trauma or impact. Under your eyes, the tiny capillaries are so small that red blood cells accumulate and eventually leak out. To make matters worse, the capillaries under the eyes are very close to the skin’s surface, and the skin in this area is among the thinnest and most translucent of your entire body. Often, the cause of under-eye circles is simply your genetic predisposition. However, there are a variety of factors that can trigger the

process that leads to dark circles, and these factors can be controlled. • Allergies: As hay fever sufferers may well know, allergic reactions to food, cosmetics and a wide variety of other allergens can cause dark circles to become more prominent. Identify and avoid your specific allergens where possible. Allergy medications may help. • Kidney infections: If you experience a sudden onset of dark under-eye circles, your kidneys may be the culprit. While kidney infections are by no means the most common cause of dark circles, you will want to rule this out. If you are also experiencing fatigue, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea or fluid retention, see your doctor. • Anemia: Anemia, or iron deficiency, can contribute to darkness beneath the eyes. If you notice that you are particularly pale, short of breath, dizzy or fatigued as well, see your doctor. • PMS: For some women, dark undereye circles and puffiness can be related to their menstrual cycle. If you notice a pattern in the severity of your under-eye woes, take measures to prevent water retention. Cut back on salt and carbohydrates and use natural diuretics like green tea to flush out excess sodium. • Lack of sleep: Though lack of sleep doesn’t actually cause dark circles, it can cause your skin to be paler than usual, which makes the darkness appear more prominent. • Aging: According to the Mayo Clinic, “What appear to be under-eye circles are sometimes just shadows cast by puffy eyelids or hollows under your eyes that

14

| fresh Vancouver Issue 10

There are a number of simple home remedies for dark circles that can really help alleviate the severity of the discolouration. Try some or all of the following to put those dark bags away once and for all! • Get your vitamins: Your diet affects the health of every aspect of your skin – including those pesky circles. To tone down your blue-black eyes, increase your intake of vitamin C (which strengthens blood vessel walls), vitamins E and K, iron and folic acid. Good sources of these nutrients include citrus fruits, berries, nuts, whole grains, green leafy vegetables, seafood, beef and green tea. Avoid saturated fats and processed foods. Cranberries, blueberries, black currant, legumes and parsley are also high in beneficial antioxidants that help strengthen blood vessels. • Supplement your skin: Grape seed extract and pycnogenol contain high quantities of the antioxidants found in the foods above, which help strengthen blood vessels. • Lift your head: Since dark circles are a vascular issue, try sleeping with your head elevated to avoid pooling of the blood. • Try topical home remedies: Topical home remedies include cool cucumber slices, crushed mint leaves, cool teabags, castor oil, or crushed turmeric and honey applied to the affected area. Watch carefully for any sensitivity to the treatment. • Drink more water: Drinking enough water not only balances sodium in your body and fights water retention; it also helps to avoid inflammation of the blood vessels under your eyes, which contributes to dark circles. • Cut out bad habits: Toxins like cigarettes and alcohol can cause premature aging, decreased oxygen supply and constricted blood vessels, which result in poor circulation and contribute to dark circles. • Balance your kidneys: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, those bluish bags are caused by imbalanced energy in the kidneys. Eating seafood such as lobster, shrimp and sardines; spices like cloves, dill seed and fennel; and nuts like pistachios and walnuts are said to help rebalance your body. • Massage and stretch: Light massage or palpitation over the affected area combined with facial exercises can help improve blood flow and reduce both puffiness and dark circles. • Wear sunscreen: The thin, sensitive skin

around your eyes is particularly prone to sun damage and inflammation. A sunscreen that protects from both UVB and UVA rays is best. • Try topical creams: There are a wide variety of cosmetics meant for under-eye circles. Vitamin K has been shown topically effective in relieving bruising and is used in some under-eye creams.

Cosmetic Procedures for Dark Circles

A variety of cosmetic procedures are available to combat dark circles – especially those that worsen with aging. Be aware, however, that some of these procedures are more effective than others. • Cosmetic acupuncture: Cosmetic (or facial) acupuncture has been shown effective in reducing puffiness and dark circles under the eyes, since it improves blood circulation. Acupuncture can also address imbalance in the kidneys. • IPL: Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapies can be useful in treating dark circles. The treatment targets excess capillaries and blood vessels beneath the eyes to reduce the blue or purple tint. Larger veins

in the under-eye area cannot be treated. • Laser resurfacing: Fractional laser skin resurfacing, typically used to remove wrinkles and resurface the skin, can also target dark circles. This is particularly useful when dark circles are caused by genetic hyper-pigmentation. • Eye lift: Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a very common surgery performed to reduce “bags” beneath the eye and rejuvenate the appearance of the eye. However, blepharoplasty on its own doesn’t address the problem of dark circles, and in some instances can make dark circles worse. Dr Brooke R. Seckel, Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and recently voted one of the “Best Doctors in America” by Best Doctors® Inc., is a specialist in the treatment of facial aging. Dr Seckel says that to get the desired results, laser blepharoplasty must be paired with arcus marginalis release and fat grafting. The arcus marginalis release allows the dark area, which is tethered to the orbital bone, to be released. Fat is then repositioned into the cavity that causes the dark circle. Says Dr

Seckel, “This is the most effective laser method for removal of dark circles under the eyes.” • Fat grafting: “For people who have a hollow eye appearance because they lack enough fat around the eyeball,” says Dr Seckel, “I harvest fat from around the umbilicus or belly button. I then make a laser transconjunctival incision inside the lower eyelid and place the fat in a position to plump the hollow appearance. The fat grafting technique is the most important component for removal of dark circles under the eyes.” Dr Seckel goes on to warn us about the practice of plumping the under-eye area. He cautions against the use of injectable fillers beneath the eyelid, citing this as an “off label” use that is associated with at least one reported instance of serious damage to the eyes. He also warns against fat injections beneath the eye, as the procedure is less controlled than fat grafting and can result in poor placement of the fat.

2011 NOMINEE “BEST DOCTOR ON THE NORTH SHORE”

‘Tis the Season for Dry Skin By Amanda Beisel

T

he winter months can wreak havoc on your skin. Environmental changes like cold winter air and lack of humidity dry up the natural oils in our skin, resulting in moisture loss. Unfortunately, this is further exacerbated by indoor heating systems, causing further moisture loss in our skin. Common symptoms can include red, irritated, dry, cracked skin on both the face and body. Loss of the skin lipids results in increased water loss and increased penetration of harmful compounds, especially for people living in big cities. Dry skin is an uncomfortable condition as well as a culprit in aging skin. When the skin is depleted of hydration, it loses elasticity, plumpness and luster, and will often become more susceptible to lines and wrinkles. Winter weather not only irritates healthy skin but can also make current skin problems worse. If you have a skin condition such as dandruff, psoriasis or eczema, be aware that winter weather might cause these conditions to flare up. The good news is that there are remedies that can prevent and treat these symptoms. Nourishing and restorative treatments for the skin, hands and body will be a great defense for these cold months ahead. A good homecare system using additional hydrating skincare products such as skin oils and additional health supplements will keep your skin healthy all year long.

Love Your Oils

The addition of topical oils during the winter months may prove to be your best defense against moisture loss. Look for products that contain a blend of omega 3 and omega 6 oils that will hydrate and protect the skin, but not clog it. Two highly nourishing omega 6 oils are linoleic and oleic acid, so look for products containing these two oils. Raspberry seed oil, vitamin E, blueberry seed oil, rosehip oil and pomegranate seed oil are also potent healing oils that have added anti-aging benefits for the skin. Our favorite product is Immerse by Osmosis Pur Medical Skincare. The addition of this amazing oil blend to your moisturizer will give you extra hydration during the day. You can also use Immerse on its own at night to provide superior moisture and protection to the skin. It is common during the winter months to notice the skin on your entire body becoming dehydrated and flaky. The Nurture Balm by Rhonda Allison is an intensely hydrating body balm that instantly soothes that winter dryness, restoring the skin back to its healthiest state. Lastly, we can’t forget about our internal oils. Some of you may remember the days when parents chased their kids down with a spoonful

of cod liver oil. Luckily, over the past few years, new technology has allowed us to improve the taste of fish oils. Now we can up our dose without burping up fish all day long! Try a combination of fish, flax, coconut and other healthy oils to significantly improve the appearance of your skin and boost your overall health.

Don’t Forget Your Sunscreen

One of those most dangerous beliefs is that we need sunscreen only in the summer. This could not be farther from the truth. The winter sun can cause a great deal of damage to unprotected skin, plus the added glare of snow increases damage even further. Be sure to apply a physical-based sunscreen containing zinc oxide all year round, with an extra layer when partaking in winter sports.

Cleanse and Exfoliate

Exfoliating your face and body is essential during the winter months to remove the build-up of dead skin. Daily exfoliation with an enzymebased cleanser for the face is one of the most effective ways to gently cleanse and exfoliate the skin. Performing a granular exfoliation once or twice a week is another option if your skin is not sensitive. A new and effective method of exfoliation for face and body is using a dermal roller such as the SKN Spin. The weekly use of this roller will provide mechanical exfoliation for the skin, removing the dead, drab layer and revealing healthy, fresh skin. The SKN Spin also increases the epidermal density and greatly enhances the penetration of topical products, making them much more effective. Many people still wash their face with soap, which I strongly advise against. The reason for this is that our skin is an acid mantle that can be referred to as a hydrolipid film, which means it is a water and oil emulsion that covers the skin, and within this water and oil emulsion are micro-flora. Together, they provide a protective line of defense for the skin. They contribute to the health, structure and function of the skin. Without a healthy barrier, bad bacteria will start to grow and toxins will be absorbed into the skin. Improper skincare such as washing with bars of soap and chemical-based products will compromise that acid mantle, leading to skin conditions and unhealthy looking skin. At SKN Clinic we encourage our clients to bring in their products, specifically their cleansers so we can test the PH level. The importance of a proper cleanser is greatly underestimated in the skincare industry.

Seasonal Skincare Treatments

Be on the lookout for seasonal skincare treatments. These treatments are designed to com-

bat the dryness and increased signs of aging that come with winter weather. At SKN Clinic, we have two incredible seasonal treatments. The Winter’s Radiance Medi-Facial is a seasonal delight that is available only in December and January. It incorporates an enticing blend of cinnamon, clove, cherries and chocolate – and works to mildly exfoliate while firming, toning and nourishing the skin. The natural polyphenols and antioxidants build healthy skin tissue and promote cell regeneration. This treatment, with its moisture-binding benefits and antioxidant support, will leave skin healthy and glowing. It is a great facial to get your skin radiant for the holiday season. The Mulled Wine Firming Peel is another signature seasonal treatment that will leave you looking radiant for your holiday parties. This amazing peel helps to minimize fine lines and refine skin tone. The wine extracts and AHAs will firm, tone, soften and leave skin feeling smooth and polished. Great for photo-aged, normal to dry skin and uneven skin tones.

Don’t Neglect Your Hands and Body

We can’t forget about the hands! We often focus so much on our faces that we neglect our hands. The hands are one the first areas of our bodies to reveal our age. A monthly hand treatment will restore the hands and prevent signs of aging. Using a combination of potent enzymes like bromelain and papain, plus the addition of AHAs, will soften dead skin cells, firm, tone and provide antioxidant support. Complete this with a nourishing oil massage and hot towel wrap to help the oils further penetrate deep within the skin. Hands will stay moist and healthy looking. This is a wonderful add-on to any skin treatment. Lactic acid is a popular body peel that simultaneously exfoliates and hydrates the skin, effectively beating the harsh winter dryness. The application of nourishing oils following a body peel further intensifies the moisturizing capabilities of this treatment. Use the tips in this article to start your annual winter checklist, and prevent the negative effects winter weather can have on your skin. Use the resources available to you – consult with a skincare professional to receive guidance on how to care for your skin during this time of year. At SKN Clinic, we provide a complimentary consultation to educate our clients on skincare, skin treatments, nutrition and, if necessary, prescribe traditional Chinese medicine to combat the more stubborn skin conditions like eczema. Let the restoration begin and make this the year you banish dry, irritated skin once and for all. Amanda Beisel is the owner of the award-winning SKN Holistic Rejuvenation Clinic in Yaletown. From Sky-High Flight Attendant to Stay-at-Home Mom:

Dr. Kelvin Mah

O

A New Mother’s Smile Story By Dr. Kelvin Mah

ne of the most interesting aspects of my job is that there isn’t one “type” of patient who ends up exploring and ultimately benefiting from the wonders of modern dentistry. Patients from all walks of life – from high-flying celebrities to new mothers – reach out to me to help them get the dream smile they’ve always wanted, whether they’re looking to make a picture-perfect splash on the red carpet, or cleaning up yet another baby-bottle splash on the living room carpet. Speaking of flying high and cleaning up carpet messes... please meet Aidan! As a former flight attendant and new mother (I cannot begin to imagine which job has the more demanding clientele!), Aidan has always understood the importance of appearance. Looking and feeling her best was always critical to her professional success and personal sense of self. Unfortunately and quite understandably, that sense of self diminished somewhat after giving birth. The rigours of being a stay-at-home mother left her feeling less than optimal on a physical, emotional and aesthetic level. While she didn’t quite know how to restore the balance she needed, she felt that after seven months of motherhood, it was time to take action. And that’s what brought her to Smile City Square Dental. The most important part of the initial consultation was carefully listening to what Aidan wanted to achieve. Indeed, there are well over a dozen aesthetic parameters that must to be considered when evaluating and designing a smile. Aidan helped me understand that she wasn’t looking to do something really complicated or invasive. Rather, she wanted to do something that would make her feel (in her words) “sexy, vital and youthful.” Aiden and her husband both agreed that she deserved a “pickme-up” as a reward for the physical, emotional and professional sacrifices that new motherhood compelled her to make – sacrifices that she certainly would make again in a heartbeat, but sacrifices, nevertheless. I also noticed that, on a clinical level, while Aidan’s overall smile was by no means unsightly, there were some notable imperfections. She had white, frosty marks and stains between her teeth. The edges and corners also showed signs of wear and chipping. And her small teeth, while

Before

strong and healthy, were not in harmonious proportion to her face. After spending quality time to grasp Aidan’s motivations and incorporating my clinical analysis of her smile, I understood quite clearly the three things that I needed to do to achieve the “sexy, vital and youthful” smile she wanted: whitening, laser gum reshaping, and veneers. After explaining my recommendation and noting that it can be done in a very predictable manner, Aidan eagerly agreed and we were all set. I began the treatment by whitening Aidan’s smile. I prescribed a customized whitening protocol in order to ensure a seamless, natural look and avoid those agonizing “hot spots” that many people experience with in-home whitening kits. Next, I used a special laser to subtly re-shape the gums, so that her relatively small teeth would align in proportion to her overall smile. Finally, after preparing and provisionalizing her teeth, I carefully bonded 10 extremely thin porcelain veneers to the front of her teeth, ensuring that I achieved the desired colour, shape and surface contour – especially around the edges, where she had some wear and chipping damage. When the treatment was finished, I was once again amazed at the power of modern dentistry. It never ceases to amaze me when combining artisan skill with leading-edge technology can gently and rapidly transform how someone looks and feels so they see the world in a rejuvenated light.

Before “After the birth of my amazing daughter, I started to feel that that there was something missing – I just didn’t feel or look as vital or youthful as I wanted. And besides, I wanted to reward myself a little. As a new mom, I’d been ‘living for two’ virtually every minute of every day for months, and I just wanted to do something small and exciting for myself. Nothing selfish, nothing major, just something special – and yes, something sexy, too! Of course, I had no idea how to do this or even if it were possible – but that all changed when I spoke with Dr. Mah. Dr. Mah truly cared about what I was feeling, and what I hoped to achieve. He made the process effortless and enjoyable. Even his practice is something special – going there is like visiting family.

After And now that I have the fresh, youthful, sexy smile that I always dreamed of, the only regret is that I didn’t do this sooner. I feel more confident. I know that I’m smiling more, and people are responding to me differently. They don’t exactly know what has change, because Dr. Mah’s artistry is so subtle and natural. But they can sense that something about me is more positive and dynamic. Well, I suppose that my little secret is out – but that’s okay! I know there are countless new mothers out there who will read my story and use it as the motivation they need to give themselves the sexy and sophisticated pick-me-up they deserve!”

Cosmetic Procedures Are Affordable Now! By Arne Hassel-Gren

to get the very best work done, even if you can’t afford to pay for entire procedures in one lump sum. The answer to your money woes is term financing – this type of financial service allows you to make affordable monthly payments on the procedures you want.

Cosmetic Surgery On Your Terms

P

lastic surgery can change a woman’s life for the better; after all, it provides a proven way to enjoy a more youthful, sexy face and body. However, planning for plastic surgery does prove stressful for many women, as paying for the procedures may be out of reach. If you’re interested in boosting your confidence and self-esteem by choosing plastic surgery or other cosmetic procedures, you should know that there are ways

When contemplating plastic surgery, it’s important to look for the very best services – this really isn’t a good time to settle in any sense of the word. In order to get the results you hope for, you’ll need to find the right doctor, the right clinic, and the right financing. Financing your plastic surgery procedures is an excellent way to space out payments over a longer term. Choosing this handy financial service (which may be available through your plastic surgeon’s office) will allow you to avoid using your credit card, which may carry a higher interest rate and will use up available credit that you may need later. Credit card limits may not be high enough to cover the cost of plastic surgery performed by a good doctor; therefore, finding another way to pay can be very important. By paying in monthly installments rather than in one lump-sum payment, you can also get more procedures than you could otherwise afford. Aside from the obvious advantages term financing brings (such as ease, convenience and affordability), there are also other reasons why it’s a practical choice as you plan your plastic surgery. For example, doctors often have slow periods in their clinics, and these periods may be optimum times to book your procedures. With term financing, you can act quickly and book procedures at the perfect moment. In some cases, you can get pre-approval at your doctor’s office within minutes. With term financing, it’s very simple to find out exactly where you stand, and whether or not

22

| fresh vancouver Issue 10

you’ll qualify for a loan for your plastic surgery procedures. Even if your medical insurance covers some aspects of your elective procedure, this coverage may not be enough to handle all of the costs that will inevitably arise. With term financing, you can easily manage the cost of your plastic surgery or other cosmetic procedures. Opting for monthly installment payment plans that feature affordable interest rates is really the ideal way to organize payments and relieve financial pressures.

Financing Is Easy!

Plastic surgery offers you a way to access youthfulness, sexiness and beauty; however, during the pre-surgery planning phase, it is important to get your finances straightened out so you can relax and focus on your procedure and recovery. With term financing, you won’t have to scrimp and save and wait for months (or years) to afford the services you want – monthly payment plans offer a way to immediately actualize the results you crave. When considering plastic surgery, doing research and shopping around is very important; the effort you put in before your procedures will always pay off later on. Finding great term financing in Canada won’t be the hardest part of getting ready to book a procedure – just be sure to look for an experienced financial services company that is respected nationwide. Life, Love and Beauty: Interview with

Gabrielle Miller By Liberty Craig

24

| fresh vancouver Issue 2

W

ith three Leo awards and two Geminis under her belt, acting sensation Gabrielle Miller is a quirky, funny, yet stunningly beautiful presence in the Canadian television and movie scene. Her classic Hollywood looks combine with her downhome humour to make her a familiar face that you want to get to know better. She boasts the rare distinction of being featured in three concurrently running television shows: the smash hit Corner Gas, the CTV comedy Robson Arms, and Space Channel’s Alienated. A humanitarian, a vegetarian with a self-described “hippie upbringing,” and a supporter of various nonprofit organizations, Miller has travelled to Africa with World Vision Canada and is currently embarking upon a new project with “Apathy is Boring” – a non-partisan organization that uses art and music to inspire youth to participate in democracy. She is the spokesperson for Vela Microboard, created to help people with disabilities overcome barriers, and sits on the board for her sister Shanti, who was born with cerebral palsy. Gabrielle spoke with Fresh Vancouver about her recent work on the big screen, the joys and struggles of balancing family life with a successful career, and the mania of beauty in the entertainment industry.

FV: Congratulations on the success of the

2011 film festival favourite Sisters&Brothers! What was this experience of ensemble filmmaking like?

Gabrielle: I’d been a fan of director Carl

Bessai’s work for years and I loved his previous films Mothers&Daughters and Fathers&Sons. My colleagues on the film were people I really respected. I have been friends with Ben Ratner (who plays my brother) for years, which helped us develop the characters. Ben’s character struggles with mental health issues, so I did some research and spoke with families with similar issues, then drew on my personal experiences to help form the character. The thing with improv (as with all roles I play) is that you have to do as much preparation as possible and feel clear on the character you are playing because the reactions have to come from a very organic place. It’s scary and fabulous – exactly what I want as an actor.

FV: Tell us about the quirky film The Guys

Who Move Furniture, set to release in 2012…

Gabrielle: It’s an ensemble comedy and

I was working with the funniest, sweetest guys on the planet, including Will Sasso, Victor Garber, Gabriel Hogan, Jonny Harris and Charles Q. Murphy. Director Mike Clattenburg had a super clear vision and within that, there

was room for interpretation and input from the actors as well. I can’t say enough how fun that experience was – it was wonderful.

FV:

What are you working on now in Nova Scotia?

Gabrielle: I’m now working on Call Me

Fitz – Jason Priestly’s show for HBO Canada. I play Melody Gray, who is a whole bunch of trouble! She’s a really fun character to play, and quite a departure from Lacey, who I played on Corner Gas. The show is amazing – it’s been doing so well and the team is incredible, the actors are so strong. I’m coming in as a new recurring character in season three.

FV:

Your life sounds like so much fun!

Gabrielle: [Laughs] It’s pretty crazy! I

also have a really fun, romantic Christmas movie coming out for the Hallmark Channel called Trading Christmas. I play opposite Tom Cavanagh, who is fantastic. We shot it in July – it’s always strange to do a Christmas movie in the middle of summer.

FV: Did you run out of gas after Corner Gas? Gabrielle: I’d been so busy for a number

of years and I just really needed a break. Sometimes you need to take time for yourself and let your world slow down a bit. You can’t be putting out that level of energy at all times. For me, I needed to extract myself from that for a little while, take time to be with my family, so I could get back on track creatively as well. I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever done, and completely necessary.

FV:

Did you always know you were funny?

Gabrielle:

Comedy was never something I knew I’d be doing, but when it started happening, it was really fun! I was a super shy kid and I always felt like a bit of a dork. I know what it feels like to be uncomfortable and awkward and shy, and those things help when you’re doing comedy. I also had some pretty serious challenges in my life – when you’re acting you need to draw on those places of happiness and pain that you know and understand. And life is funny! We can’t take ourselves too seriously. I don’t have that wonderful mind that comics or writers have. All I have is what I can do to express it.

FV:

Where do you see yourself in the next few years?

Gabrielle:

I’m really focused on finding characters that I can investigate, and creating

25

| fresh Vancouver Issue 10

something new in my work. It’s a really good place to be, because there are times in your life when you just get burnt out. I feel like my passion for life and that feeling of really loving what I do has returned.

FV:

How do you balance your busy work schedule with your family life?

Gabrielle: I got married during the last

season of Corner Gas and we became a family the following January. I was still acting, but my focus was primarily on my family and on being with my son. And that still is my number-one priority, but I feel like I have the space to be able to include my work in a bigger way now. It’s so personal – each person, each parent, each artist has their own way of making things work. Figuring that out in itself is a very big thing.

FV: Let’s talk about the great challenge of parenting…

Gabrielle:

Every day is new and I try to wake up each day with the intention that our moments are going to be full and that I’m going to be as present as possible. Before becoming a parent, I had this idea of how things were going to look, or how we were going to negotiate family life. Parenting teaches you so freaking much! Until you see what works for your child, any ideas you had just go out the window. You want to be the best at everything you do – instead of just doing your best at everything you do. That’s a big lesson in life and something that I’m constantly having to figure out for myself. And what works today might not work tomorrow. You have to give yourself a break and look at each day for what it is in that moment.

“You want to be the best at everything you do – instead of just doing your best at everything. That’s a big lesson in life and something that I’m constantly having to figure out for myself.” FV:

You have a unique family dynamic…

Gabrielle: My son was born in Swaziland and came to us when he was two. It’s visually evident that our family is made the way we’re made – every family has their own specific joys and challenges, and we have our own set of them because of the way our family was created. He’s the biggest gift of my life – I’m so

Interview with Gabrielle Miller cont’d it’s tough when you’re running around and you have half an hour to get ready and your son wants a snack and you’ve got a stain on your dress and there’s dog hair everywhere… but, really, these are small problems to have.

FV:

How do you find time to exercise?

Gabrielle: Exercise has been a challenge in the last little while – I’ve just recommitted. But it’s always been important to me. It’s not just about getting your body to look the way you want; for me it’s about decreasing stress and making time for yourself, letting your mind go – and that’s where great ideas often come from, when you don’t have a million things going on.

FV:

Favourite workouts?

Gabrielle: I was training with boxing

coach Kevin Reynolds for years – it’s a great workout, great for stress and really empowering. I love yoga and I think it’s important for people like me who need to have their mind slowed down a little. I have just joined a great gym here in Toronto. They have a pool, so I can take my son swimming with me, which I’m really excited about. When we go to our house in Slocan, BC, I love to hike. That’s one of the things I really miss about Vancouver – the University Endowment Lands, Jericho beach, the places where you can exercise and be in nature at once. When we go home during the winter, we go snowshoeing. My son has his own pair and he looks adorable!

FV:

So you consider Slocan home?

Gabrielle: Most of my family lives there,

Gabrielle Miller as Melody Gray in Season 3 of Call Me Fitz which premieres in 2012 on HBO Canada. Season 2 is currently airing Sunday evenings at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT on HBO Canada. absolutely in love with my son and I feel like we were always meant to be together. At the end of the day we’re just a family like everybody else.

FV: Are you still a vegetarian? Gabrielle:

I’ve been a vegetarian my whole life and I can pretty confidently say that I always will be. My husband is not and my son is not. I don’t stand on a soapbox about vegetarianism. I think it’s important to eat as ethically as possible, but I don’t go to other

people’s homes and question where they got their meat.

FV: Your life sounds pretty busy! How do you always look so gorgeous?!

Gabrielle: Thank you for saying that! At

home I am super casual. When I’m out with my son, I see other mothers who look so well put together, and I always wonder how they do it. When I go out, I have to find the inspiration to put something nice on and try to look good. It’s fun and I actually love fashion, but

26

| fresh Vancouver Issue 10

and a few years ago my husband and I went for a visit and stayed in an amazing bed and breakfast. Then it came up for sale and we bought it. I have many nieces and nephews, so when we go home, it’s a completely fabulous madhouse. We have up to ten children plus my whole family over to dinner every couple of nights – it’s great.

FV:

You’re still young and absolutely gorgeous, but when you began your career you were only 18… Do you find it unnerving to get older on screen?

Gabrielle:

I consciously try to reject the pressure that is put on women – especially in the entertainment industry. I’m vain, like everybody else; everybody wants to look good and feel good about themselves, but I don’t want to ever be obsessed. That’s not to say that I don’t ever struggle with self-image, because I do, but I don’t like seeing women completely consumed with looking a particular way in the hope that it’s going to fill something up inside them. That’s not where happiness comes from.

Trick of the Eye: Slimming Makeup Tricks for the Holidays By Julie Brown

makeup colours highlight and bring the area forward. Highlighting with a shimmer will further emphasize a light area. The do-all brush for this application is MAC’s wonderful #129.

Thin in Minutes

E

ver wonder what je ne sais quoi a model possesses that sets her apart from the rest of us? Besides the obvious – being thin and tall – a well balanced facial structure and shape represent beauty to the eye. In general, an oval face shape and well defined cheekbones are two of the aspects we subconsciously perceive as beautiful. Cheekbones give the face threedimensional shape. Strong cheekbones catch the light, creating both highlight and shadow, which further exaggerates this dimension. So what are those of us who are not naturally sculpted to do? Read on: here’s how to take ten pounds off your face instantly, and bring out the super model visage in you! Makeup has some incredible uses. It can be used to make you look thinner with just a few products and a little know-how, with results so amazing they’re sure to become a part of your daily makeup regimen. This technique need not be used only to create a thinner-looking face; anyone, anytime can use it to create beautiful, enviable, sculpted cheekbones. It’s a must, whether you want day makeup or glamorous evening makeup. It brings out your best qualities, while helping hide the parts of your face you may not want to draw attention to.

Shade and Contour

The theory behind the technique is knowing the high and low points on the face, and understanding where to shade (contour) and where to counter shade (highlight) for optimal effect. Your products can be in either powder or cream form. You will need a colour palette of three shades: 1. A darker, skin-toned contouring product such as a bronzer, a few shades darker than your own skin tone. I like MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in medium to medium dark or NARS Cream Stick in St. Barts. Avoid using frosts or shimmer; your contouring product should be matte. 2. A flattering blush colour such as NARS Orgasm. Your blush can be matte or can have a little bit of shimmer. 3. A highlight colour such as pale yellow, off-white or pale pink. Try MAC Pearl Frost or NARS Copacabana. Again, matte or shimmer is fine. Darker makeup colours recede and diminish the areas where they are applied. Lighter

28

| fresh Vancouver Issue 10

A thinner-looking face can be achieved by shading the outer areas of your face (around the hair line, near the ears and jaw line) about an inch wide and then blending inward. Imagine a perfect oval superimposed over your face. Apply your foundation and then apply your contour colour to the outside of your face, following that oval shaping. To contour your cheekbones, apply the darker shade starting from the middle of your ear and ending underneath your cheek. Don’t go past the outer corner of the eyes. This is applied below the cheekbones even if they are not apparent. Apply blush above this contour makeup, and on the apples of the cheeks, which will add colour. Finish with the highlight colour, above the blush, on top of the highest point of the cheekbones. To minimize a double chin, apply the contour colour along the jaw line and blend it down, towards your neck. This creates depth and helps to strengthen the jaw line. You should also include a little of this contour colour onto your neck and down to your shirt line to avoid a “mask” look.

Quick Slimming Tricks

Here are a few more slimming tricks for the face that you can apply along with your fabulous makeup: • Apply more dramatic eye makeup to help draw the attention to your eyes. • For a quick, slimming hair style, wear your hair up and off your face. Pull your tresses into a ponytail high on the back of your head, and slightly tease at the crown to bring out your bone structure. Julie Brown has been drawn to makeup artistry from a very young age. I’ve noticed as I age that my lips are less full, with lines appearing around the edges. Also, the corners of my mouth are turning down and make me look sad. Can lip augmentation improve these issues? I don’t want to look unnatural.

Answer:

The changes you describe are typical for many people. The lips are an important component of facial symmetry and aesthetics. I prefer the phrase “lip enhancement” rather than “lip augmentation,” since my goal is to optimize the appearance of the lips rather than make them look drastically different. Dermal fillers are used to make the corrections, with the preferred type being hyaluronic acid. This is a complex sugar found naturally in our skin. The latest fillers are mixed with lidocaine for more comfort during the injection. Personally, I carefully assess the lips and how they relate to the rest of the face, and the relative size of upper to lower lip. Lips are very vascular and sensitive to small amounts of filler placement. Therefore, the procedure should not be rushed. The key to an optimal lip enhancement is to go to an aesthetic physician who is not only very experienced but artistic as well. There is an art to this, much like sculpting. Lip enhancement is personalized to the patient and generally involves improving the definition of the borders, adding appropriate amounts of volume, while balancing the proportion of the upper to lower lip. Framing the lips with injections at the corners can reverse the downturn, completing a natural, rested and youthful look. before

Question:

I am a mother of two young children and I just don’t have the time to go to the spa for treatments anymore. Is there anything that I can do at home to get the spa “glow” and keep my skin healthy and prevent aging?

Answer:

The SKN Spin can provide three key skin benefits that will keep your skin healthy and glowing all year round. First, it makes the products you are already using much more effective, because the roller creates channels in the skin where products can penetrate more deeply. The deeper layer of your skin is where aging occurs, so if your products aren’t reaching this layer, they are ineffective. The SKN Spin is also a powerful exfoliator that thoroughly exfoliates dead skin cells, so there’s no need to purchase exfoliating products anymore. Lastly, it increases the density of the epidermal layer (outer layer of skin), which begins to thin as we age. Weekly rolling with the SKN Spin roller will give your skin a nice glow due to the increased flow of blood and oxygen and the deep penetration of nutrients. It is important that you are using safe and effective products, as products containing chemicals could irritate your skin due to increased penetration. Consult your skincare practitioner to see if the products you are using are safe and effective.

Anti-Aging Treatments:

Are They Worth the

Big Bucks? By Michelle Walker

T

here’s a lot of talk these days about anti-aging. What was the hot buzz word of five years ago is now getting a bad reputation for being insensitive. But isn’t aging natural and inevitable? The truth is: the term “anti-aging” is missing an important little disclaimer; it should really be called “anti-the-signs-of-aging.” The fact is, we are all aging, and to be aging as youthfully as possible is directly related to the choices we make and the lifestyle we live. What we look for in anti-aging treatments is not to deny that we are aging, but to fight the signs of its appearance, primarily what appears on the surface of our skin. Simply put, aging of the skin is caused by a breakdown in the skin’s support structures. As we age, our skin slows down the production of collagen, elastin fibers and glycosaminoglycans (to name a few). It slows the production of fibroblast cells (creators of all the support structures), and it decreases the production of the Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMFs) or “skin plumpers” like hyaluronic acid (a wonderful little hydration factor that holds 1,000 times its weight in water). It slows skin cell turnover, increasing build-up on the surface and causing textural concerns, while accumulating melanin on the surface in the form of brown spots or pigmentation. Approximately 20 percent of skin aging is caused by internal (or intrinsic) factors (i.e., genetics), and the overwhelming majority is caused by external (or extrinsic) factors – like forgetting to apply your sunscreen. These two aging factors are not mutually exclusive; if you are affected by one, you are also affected by the other... and both are impacted by how you care for your skin. So how can we fight all these internal and external aging “helpers”? The best way to help treat the skin is to intentionally engage the skin’s natural healing response. I know what you’re thinking – how does that make sense? The fact is, the skin is an amazing healer. When your skin sustains an injury, it jumps into action to repair itself. This healing pro-

cess creates a boost in the production of collagen, elastin, hydration and skin cell renewal – all of the processes that slow down as we age! The latest anti-aging treatments work by creating small, targeted and controlled “injuries” to the skin so that the skin initiates its natural healing phenomena. The following treatments follow this concept: • IPL or Intense Pulsed Light treatments are ideal for helping to clear an uneven skin tone that has brown spots or pigmentation and redness in the form of broken capillaries. The IPL emits light energy that is absorbed by the targets in the skin (hemoglobin for capillaries and melanin for pigmentation). This absorption damages the structures, which are then cleared from the skin’s surface by the body as it heals itself. • Peels work on the surface (epidermis) of the skin, and are one of the easiest and best ways to smooth rough surface texture and stimulate (and regulate!) skin cell renewal. As an added bonus, peels naturally increase the production of collagen, elastin fibers, glycosaminoglycans and hydration levels in the skin. • Fractional Laser Resurfacing is one of the most popular ways to help treat structural concerns in the skin such as wrinkles, fine lines, scarring and, in some cases, texture and pore size, all with minimal downtime. This “colour-blind” technology uses heat energy that passes by the epidermis to cause damage in the deeper dermal layer of the skin, boosting the production of collagen, elastin and fibroblast activity. • Thermage/RF Technology are treatments that deeply heat the support structure in the dermis and underlying fat layer of the skin, causing a thermal injury that results in a contouring and tightening of the skin’s surface. This deep heating can result in a reduction of fine lines and wrinkles and an increase in the skin’s firmness. No matter what method you choose to fight the signs of aging, the success of your skin treatment program is based on two simple rules. One: you need to do your homework before choosing your facility (experienced, properly trained practitioners are key). Two: you must have realistic expectations about your treatment, its outcome, and your role in its success. The best results will ultimately be obtained by combining several methods in a course of treatments including facials and skin care, and most importantly, your participation. Anti-aging skin treatments are truly an investment of time, energy and resources... but can ultimately be well worth the efforts.

Tai chi: An Old

Exercise in a New Age By Dr Wenrong Chen

T

ai Chi has a long history in China as a traditional martial art. It has been practiced as a fitness exercise since the 1950s. Originally practiced by Taoist yogis hundreds of years ago as a body and mind exercise to promote the flow of energy, Tai Chi helps us understand the Tao, a Chinese philosophy for universal balance. Tai Chi has gained in popularity for decades around the world. The main principle of Tai Chi is coordinating breathing patterns and mind meditation with body movement. Without these guidelines, it could be mistaken as simply a slow stretching with little benefit for internal balance and energy performance. Every motion in Tai Chi is detailed with precise guidance of mind flow and joint balance. In Chinese culture, our bodily systems reflect the cosmos: sky, earth and human in relation to their counterparts of spirit, essence and Qi (life energy). Tai Chi aims to perform the three elements according to the way of the cosmos. Tai Chi uses the mind to build energy, integrating spinal twisting, walking in different directions and the easy effort of raising the hands. The force of gravity and support from the earth charge the flow of Tai Chi. Slow, deep breathing fuels the whole performance. As an active meditation, Tai Chi is an art of balance. Frequent practice of Tai Chi can increase circulation, cultivate the mind and correct imbalances of the body’s systems. Recent clinical studies found that Tai Chi is helpful for cardiac health plus the nervous system, digestive system, respiratory system, immunity and more. While seniors like its gentle movements for balance, younger practitioners are also fond of its fusion of yoga and meditation to wipe away work tension and rejuvenate energy. Tai Chi is practiced with different forms according to specific schools developed through time. Generally, Yang, Chen or Wu style are the most common schools for Tai Chi. The schools are named after the masters

who taught in their own styles, but the principle and benefit for fitness are almost the same. Traditional forms take 20 to 30 minutes for one session, while simplified forms may take only five to 10 minutes. Daily practice of 20 minutes is ideal for those wish to do Tai Chi for wellness. The training starts with relaxation and standard movements of body and mind; it takes time to develop proper balance. Beginners can practice form by form, until they can perform each movement with confidence in good flow. The learning curve also involves learning awareness of tension and imbalance. Tai Chi is an excellent exercise to warm you up for your day, or wrap up your night. Sensations of Qi and loose joints can help you experience the joy of a deeper level of relaxation. Practitioners enjoy the harmony of spirit and energy, with increasing levels of difficulty through long-term practice. It is not rare to find people practicing Tai Chi in their 90s or even older. Tai Chi is an anti-aging exercise with great benefits for longevity. Tai Chi is a truly green exercise that respects our planet as well. You will require only casual wear to begin practicing either indoors or out, and there’s no need to invest in equipment. You simply need to follow a good instructor and practice at your own pace.

It is not rare to find people practicing Tai Chi in their 90s or even older.

After learning Tai Chi from Chinese masters in the early 1980s, Dr Chen has maintained a daily Tai Chi routine for 28 years. As a Chinese medicine doctor from China, he uses Tai Chi to help patients recover from all types of health concerns. Parttime instruction of Tai Chi has been his hobby for over 20 years. Now, Dr Chen would like to introduce traditional teaching to the West. See his English blog at taichituina. wordpress.com.

Dandruff:

Causes and Treatments By Dr Jenny Schmidt-White, ND

D

andruff, or pityriasis simplex capillitii, is characterized by scalp itchiness and the shedding of dead skin cells in visible white or yellowish clumps from the scalp. It is a common complaint affecting approximately half the population. Individuals affected with dandruff have a more rapid turnover rate of skin cells on the scalp. Dandruff can be exacerbated by extreme temperature changes, dry climates, and hair products and detergents.

Three Main Causes of Dandruff

There are three known causes of dandruff: malassezia fungi, sebaceous (or oil) gland secretions, and individual sensitivity. Let’s look at each in detail: Fungus: Malassezia globosa fungi are present on all human scalps, but are more proliferative in men, individuals who naturally produce more oils from their scalps, and people with suppressed or poor immune systems. The fungus produces enzymes that degrade the sebum (oil) that is naturally produced by the scalp. The enzymatic process results in a fat called oleic acid, which penetrates the superficial layer of skin on the scalp and triggers a more rapid turnover of cells in susceptible individuals, causing dead skin cells to clump together and fall off in large flakes.

Sebaceous gland secretion: Sebaceous gland secretion is influenced mainly by androgenic (or male) hormones. An excess of testosterone can be found in men and women and is usually accompanied by symptoms including acne, male pattern baldness, facial hair growth in women, and feelings of agitation or easy anger. Individual sensitivity: The combination of individual variations of sebaceous gland secretions, susceptibility to increased fungal growth on the scalp, and overall hormonal and immune function all contribute to the symptoms of dandruff.

Treatment and Prevention

Probably the most common dandruff treatment is the use of medicated over-the-counter shampoos that contain specific ingredients to combat the cause of the individual’s dandruff. These shampoos contain ingredients like zinc pyrithione, which slows the turnover rate of skin cells and disrupts the fungal cycle, selenium sulfide, which has anti-seborrheaic properties, or ketoconazole, an anti-fungal which disrupts the cell membranes and growth of malassezia fungi. Naturopathic medicine can also help to treat the underlying causes of dandruff. Hormone levels can be tested, and imbalances cor-

rected to address over-secretion of scalp oils. Another approach is nutritional assessment, with dietary recommendations typically including foods high in zinc and selenium such as sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds, wheat germ, dark chocolate, wild salmon, lamb and oats. Correction of poor immune function can also help prevent the overgrowth of malassezia on the scalp. Other preventative options include topical application of organic coconut oil, which contains anti-fungal medium-chain fatty acids, and washing hair with cool to warm water. Dandruff is a common problem that can be helped with the use of therapeutic shampoos as well as addressing individual susceptibility. Consult your healthcare provider for personalized treatment advice.

Prepare for Take-off:

Life Lessons in the Sky By Heather White

A

ny time I fly, I make a point of paying close attention to the safety demonstration. Let’s just say I’m not the most comfortable flyer and the ritual of gathering the necessary safety information calms most of my nerves. Nevertheless, there is an incredible metaphor within those three minutes before take-off as the flight attendants prepare us for any unforeseen emergencies that may occur during the flight. This metaphor for life doesn’t promise that there will be no emergency, but instead illustrates how best to prepare for and cope with one, if it does occur.

Safety Measure #1: Buckle Up

Of course, you buckle your seatbelt in an airplane so you don’t fly out of your seat in the case of a sudden drop or unforeseen turbulence. But buckling up is important in life as well. Metaphorically speaking, I’d like to suggest that buckling up equates to being grounded and connected so you don’t get caught in unexpected mental or emotional turbulence. In your day-to-day life, buckling up means feet on the ground, present in the moment, sunk in, and leaning back. Buckled up creates within you a feeling of strength, a knowledge that you can survive the occasional unexpected dip or bumpiness in the ride.

Safety Measure #2: Exit Doors and Floor Lighting

Everything in life has a beginning, middle and

end. Sometimes the end will be the last breath you take, but more often than not, endings will occur in a somewhat constant stream throughout the course of your living years. Entering into situations and circumstances in your life knowing what your exit strategy will be, should things not work out as planned or should an emergency arise, makes it easy for you to take action quickly. It you wait until you realize things aren’t working out, it will be too late to plan your exit. Stress kicks in with accompanying hormones, and your ability to think and see clearly is drastically compromised. Knowing your exit strategy might mean having a “plan B” for your career, a back-up babysitter in case your nanny can’t make it, or a home-schooling option as an alternative to regular school. Think these things through and plan your exit, well before you’ll ever need to use it, to create an instant path of illumination for you to follow.

Safety Measure #3: Put Your Oxygen Mask on First

This one may seem obvious since, if you don’t follow this measure, you indeed put your life at risk, yet so many of us take it for granted. Recently, I was at a conference with high-calibre presentations by top executives from around the country. One woman, a highly accomplished CEO of a large technology organization, was delivering an interesting talk when suddenly she stopped, grabbed her water bottle, took a sip, looked out at the thousand people in the audience, turned and walked off stage. Of

course, we were all dumbfounded, not knowing what had just occurred. The emcee announced that she’d been battling the flu, and went on to introduce the next speaker. Later in the day, the woman came back on stage to finish her presentation and informed us she had gotten some coffee and was feeling better. Furthermore, she told us that as a single mother, she’d been getting less than four hours of sleep a night for the past year! I know her story is not unique. So many women, and men too, do not take care of their own health and instead give all of themselves to their families, their work, their recreation and volunteerism. These are all valiant endeavours, but none are worth more than your health and wellbeing. After all, if you’re not here, you can’t do anything to add value to the world. That is the metaphor of the oxygen mask. No matter what, take care of yourself, put your health at the top of your priority list and then, and only then, move on to assisting others.

Carola Bun of House of Bun

I

nternationally acclaimed jewellery designer Carola Bun is the pinnacle of fashionable elegance with a modern edge. Her fairytale pearl and crystal necklaces adorn the décolletage of women of all ages and backgrounds, from pop culture superstars (Lady Gaga!) to the more mature sophisticate. These Chanel-inspired creations add glam to any outfit and bring out that inner princess in just about anyone. www.houseofbun. com

It all started when...

“I’d been making couture dresses since I was 14, and just over a year ago I wanted to make a pearl necklace for one of my dresses. I didn’t really know how to make jewellery, so I took some lessons and tried a few things. I made one necklace that I really liked and wore it everywhere, and it attracted a lot of attention. Then I made another necklace, and another... and it blossomed into a collection.”

Not your grandma’s pearls!

“My design aesthetic is very much inspired by Coco Chanel. I became overwhelmingly excited by Chanel and learned everything I could about her – I wish she could see my studio! My designs are a combination of Swarovski crystals and pearls. I have over 50 designs in production, and each has a traditional, classic, sophisticated elegance with a modern touch. They’re not your grandma’s pearls!”

Make your statement

“My necklaces are statement pieces that make styling very easy. A pearl necklace can transform any outfit, whether it’s work attire or a little black dress. The wonderful lustre of pearls makes a woman’s complexion glow – many of my mature clients comment that they look much younger with pearls against their skin!”

Did you say Gaga?

“Three months after I started my business, I was asked to design a necklace for Lady Gaga – the last person I would ever think of creating a necklace for! It took me a couple of months to create the half black, half white, 10-strand necklace with lots of Swarovski crystals dangling from the bottom. Lady Starlight (Lady Gaga’s stylist) came to pick it up!”

Glam versatility

“My bigger statement pieces are red carpet worthy, but I want to make the brand really versatile so women can wear the necklaces wherever, whenever. I have long single-strand pieces adorned with crystals that clients love to wear with jeans and t-shirts.”

The new LBD

“I love pairing my pearls with the little black dress. It’s the easiest thing to dress up or down – but with heels, always! I love the high-heeled platform – it adds height and elongates the legs, but you can still walk. Practicality is important. I put a lot of effort into the practicality of my necklaces too, so they hang right and don’t tangle.”

Calling all inner princesses

“When people put on these necklaces, they truly shine and feel fabulous. My three collections explore the lighter side and darker side of a woman and play with those complexities, and I have different designs for tall people, small people, and different lifestyles. Everyone can bring out their inner princess!”

Joyce Poon: “Extensions are such a lifesaver: you can get up and be ready to go, and not worry about putting on a full face. I have a one-year-old so I really understand the need for this for moms! Lash extensions give you that definition without needing to be all made up. You can go from the doctor’s office to a lunch meeting with these lashes!”

Morgan Crossing Sports Medicine: 30-minute Massage Value: $56

Al Ezaki: “Everybody loves massage! You don’t need to be injured to feel

stress. Our massage therapist is awesome. We do chiropractics, physiotherapy and athletic therapy (for sports injuries) along with massage, and we have a registered dietician on staff. It’s an unusual combination of practitioners, and what’s unique about us is that we will often refer back and forth. A client will usually see at least two of us.”

Pure Nail Bar: Manicure and Pedicure Value: $50

Irene: “We know that mothers often have very little time to take care of themselves, so we wanted to offer a little pampering to make the winner look and feel good. For mothers who are pressed for time, Pure Nail Bar is the perfect place to get your mani-pedi combo done at the same time, so you’re in and out in 30 minutes!”

Everything Wine: Wine Gift Basket Value: $100

Rick: “Busy moms should be able to take some time out and enjoy a glass of wine with their husbands or good friends!”

Posh Shop: Home Decor Gift Certificate Value: $50.

Ingrid: “We carry a broad spectrum of high-quality home decor products and personal accessories that are affordable – from fun to fabulous! We’ve got international lines plus local artisans including Bella Notte Linens, Missoni Home, Emma Bridgewater home ware, Klippan luxury throws, Sabre cutlery from France. Participating in the Mommy Makeover allows us to contribute to the community that’s supporting us.“

Bel Bronzo: One Session Infrared Tanning Value: $40

Julia Karimi: “I love makeovers! They’re a chance to transform yourself. Moms always feel better when they look after themselves, and it helps them look after their children better, too. It’s so important for women to give themselves that time.”

Dolores Kirkwood

Artistic Director, Royal City Youth Ballet Company

C

lassically trained ballet dancer and musical theatre star, Dolores Kirkwood is perhaps best known as the multi-awardwinning Artistic Director of the Royal City Youth Ballet Company. For nearly a quarter of a century, the company has given rising young dancers the ability to perform and delight audiences throughout the Lower Mainland. Mrs. Kirkwood spoke with Fresh Vancouver about how it all came to be...

The Road to Royal City

“When I was four, my mother took me to Josephine Slater, who was my ballet teacher until I started dancing professionally. I was in a couple of small ballet companies; then, I discovered

musical theatre. My first professional show was Little Mary Sunshine with Theatre Under the Stars (back when it was a professional company). My favourite was Hello, Dolly!, which I performed with five different companies as Dolly Levi. I opened my own studio when I was 18. I also spent years putting on school musicals, including 20 years at Terry Fox Secondary in Port Coquitlam. I thought nothing of going out to the football field, picking out three or four guys, and saying I want you for rehearsal today!”

Auspicious Beginnings

“The Vancouver Ballet Society used to hold regular Sunday dance gatherings – people who were serious about dance, as I was. Twenty-

four years ago, I was talking to Donna Fishwick about those days... and she said let’s do it! So Donna and I and other interested people formed a board. Our first performance as a company was a sold-out performance of Coppélia at the Shadbolt Centre – which has 300 seats! We decided we should do The Nutcracker at the Shadbolt, then were asked to do shows in Abbotsford, Maple Ridge, Surrey and so on.”

Royal City Today

“Our aim is to train dancers in the classical forms and teach them classical roles. We are a traditional, classical ballet group, but we also do modern dance as well as musical theatre. I always say, if you want to be a dancer, this is

the place to find out! Some can’t handle all the work; others are hooked. We have turned out so many dancers in professional companies all over the world who got their first classical experience with us.”

“This is our twenty-third year doing The Nutcracker, and it changes every year. Last year our newest addition was a Chinese dance influenced by David YH Louie (founder of Ballet British Columbia) who always came to the dance. He bought me a five-foot tall Nutcracker, and I wanted to do the same this year, but he passed away last month.”

There will also be a visit from Santa Claus! $

Awards and Accolades...

“When I was inducted into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, the ceremony was at the Orpheum theatre. As a little girl, I grew up watching every vaudeville show that came to the Orpheum. I dreamed that I would be the next Ginger Rogers on that very staircase! I became a member of the Order of BC in 2009. I think all of us who have received that order feel very humbled by it. When I got the call about receiving the Sam Payne award, it was such a dream. I kept thinking, is that really me? It seemed such an unreachable goal. I am very fortunate to have been given these awards.”
