Freemans is pleased to present a collection of fine European works of art to be offered at auction on January 23. This carefully curated selection of artwork includes George Bernard O’Neill's ‘The Father of the Regiment,’ a great example of English Victorian painting, in which scenes of everyday life are depicted with great charm and sentiment, Isidor Kaufmann's 'In the Synagogue,' as well as a previously unknown rendition of the subject ‘Salvator Mundi’ from a 16th century Venetian school artist that had been in the property of a Philadelphia institution for decades before making its auction debut.
Other fine works of note include James Webb's 'View of Paris.' Webb is today well-known for his realistically rendered cityscapes, typically in a large, horizontal format as in the present work, along with this townscapes and marine paintings. The optic fidelity with which his scenes are rendered place Webb within the larger tradition of veduta painters and printmakers
