message It is with great pride that my Chairman’s message comes direct from the new SAHOF offices at the MCG. Our deepest gratitude is extended to The Tatts Group, who generously provided 15 years of office provision to SAHOF and to our new hosts, The Melbourne Cricket Club for making us feel so warmly welcomed. The offices are close to our “Gallery” in the National Sports Museum (NSM) at the MCG and fittingly located on the third floor of the Great Southern Stand overlooking the statue of our inaugural inductee Sir Donald Bradman AC. The NSM is of upmost importance, providing the opportunity to showcase our sporting heritage to all Australians. If you haven’t visited, then I highly recommend you do so. I’m delighted to welcome the appointment of former Prime Ministers, The Hon. Bob Hawke AC and The Hon. John Howard OM AC as SAHOF Co-Patrons. Renowned for their passion for sport and their understanding of the significance of sport to our nation, we look forward to their valued input and support. I’m also happy to advise that John Eales AM has agreed to join Sir Rod Eddington AM, Don Argus AC and David Mortimer AO on our Advisory Board. The 29th Annual Induction and Awards Gala Dinner will be held on Thursday 10th October at Crown Melbourne and we’re aiming for another sell out. Under the Chairmanship of Robert de Castella MBE our Selection Committee has made their Inductee selections and our Dinner Committee is well advanced with the planning for another spectacular night. The SAHOF brand is very strong and in keeping with the exclusivity of Membership our exclusive Member Lapel Pin has been redesigned and packaged for presentation to new Members and will also be redistributed to all living Members. Themed ‘Inspire the Nation’ we celebrated some of Australia’s greatest sporting moments. Duncan Armstrong OAM as MC interviewed Layne Beachley, Wally Lewis AM and Susie O’Neill OAM drawing out unique memories and insights that had the 100 plus guests both enlightened and inspired. Another highlight was Mick Doohan AM, meeting and sharing his experiences with SAHOF Scholarship holder Brad Shaw whom he is mentoring. The feedback received from Etihad and their guests, outlined this as one of the most successful and enjoyable corporate functions that many had attended. We are delighted with news that the Australia Sports Commission has extended their grant for the next two years and we thank them for their ongoing support. New Office Update

BOARD UPDATE SAHOF has grown a lot in recent years, with a stronger brand, a wider range of activities to undertake and of course moving from two full time staff to three full time staff soon with the support of specialists who we can draw on at times.

We are pleased to announce that we have moved to a new location at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). We spent close to 7 years in the Tattersall’s building on St Kilda Road which served us very well, and although we have great memories there we are delighted with our new home. The Tatts Group have been a wonderful supporter of SAHOF, not only with providing accommodation but furniture, fittings and support and attendance at our many events. This new move marks our footprint within the National Sports Museum area and we wish to thank all involved for making this possible, particularly Stephen Gough, CEO at the MCC. Located in the Great Southern Stand, and overlooking a statue of our inaugural inductee, Sir Donald Bradman AC at the Australia Post Avenue of Legends on whom our values are based, we now have our first proper home, a new focus, a new face alongside so many iconic brands – it’s the right place for us. Our new home has a new feel, it’s a clean and modern space fitted out with staff offices, boardroom and storage facilities. This new home is of great importance to SAHOF given its location at the MCG, closeness to the National Sports Museum and of course to all the other relevant bodies located within the “G”. With easy access and great meeting facilities to welcome visitors and guests, drop in and say hi to us if you’re in the area.

Administration & Communications Coordinator Kelly Hetherington has now left SAHOF to pursue her athletic dreams on the international circuit, having been selected to compete at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow in late 2013. Kelly has worked part time with SAHOF for around five years, initially providing support as part of our Dinner team and for the last 18 months as our Administration Assistant. Kelly will continue her involvement with SAHOF on future Dinner teams. We would like to extend our warmest thanks to Kelly for all the great work she has done throughout her time with us here and wish her every success in the future – both for her sporting and personal life. “Kelly has a bright and promising future career in track and field and we wish her all the best, both Tania and I will miss her dearly” says Bob Lay, SAHOF General Manager. We are pleased to announce that we have successfully recruited for the new position of Administration & Communications Coordinator. This role has been developed to subsume the role of Administration Assistant as well as bringing in much needed communications responsibilities. We look forward to introducing you to our newest SAHOF staff member, Lauren Hill, who will take over the administrative aspects of the

previous role as well as having communication aspects introduced into the expanded role. Lauren has a strong background in sport, having both worked and volunteered with a variety of sport organisations including the Victorian Olympic Council, the Australia Olympic Committee and London 2012 assisting with team processing and acting as a Duty Manager at the Australian Youth Olympic Games in Sydney earlier this year. Lauren has been a competitive equestrian for over ten years and was the Junior Committee President with the Corio & Moorabool Pony Club. Drawing on a wide range of sports related roles combined with a Bachelor Degree in Commerce majoring in sport management and finance, we look forward to working with Lauren from July 2013. Promoting responsible drinking

This signage will be displayed again for game three in Sydney on July 17. At the second game in Brisbane on June 26 you will see the ‘Get the Facts’ logo displayed on-field signage.

As a grandfather himself, Neil is delighted that SAHOF Chair and fellow grandfather John Bertrand will feature on a DrinkWise video discussing the role of grandparents as influential adults in their grandchildren’s lives. Grandparents often have an honest, open and loving relationship with their grandchildren, allowing them the ideal opportunity to discuss important topics children may not want to discuss with their parents. This is a great opportunity for DrinkWise to reinforce our key messages of the importance of all influential adults on children’s attitudes to drinking. Gaining a winning edge with new technology

victoria university When high performance sport meets cutting-edge science, it makes for a winning match. Victoria University’s Institute of Sport, Exercise Science and Active Living (ISEAL) is working alongside some of the country’s most elite sporting organisations to help them gain a competitive advantage through new technology. Most recently ISEAL has teamed up with Netball Australia and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) to develop a world-leading indoor player tracking system. PhD researcher Alice Sweeting from Victoria University is working closely with a crosssectional group of netball players including the Australian Diamonds over the next three years to monitor the performance, speed and agility of the athletes on court. Netball is the first sport in Australia to use this groundbreaking technology, which is anticipated to provide a vital edge for next year’s 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2015 Netball World Cup. ‘Outdoor sports such as football use GPS during training and matches. Unfortunately we’re unable to use GPS indoors as we can’t get satellite reception. However through a radio frequency tracking system we’re able to get data measures that are similar to GPS’, says Sweeting. The tracking system, called RF Tracking, developed by the CSIRO and AIS, captures information such as the athletes’ distance covered on court, high intensity running, velocity and accelerations, which is transmitted to Sweeting’s laptop in real time. The data will help coaches and conditioning staff understand the optimum training methods of their athletes and in turn improve match performance. This collaboration with the AIS and Netball Australia is a prime example of how the University is working with industry towards the shared goal of advancing sport technology applications.

Additionally, with next year’s 2014 Winter Olympics, ISEAL has been working with the Australian ski-cross team using eye-tracking technology to investigate the relationship between gaze behaviours and steering in a competitive racing environment. The research will help to develop training protocols and is anticipated to result in quicker race times. The project has been undertaken in partnership with the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia and the AIS. “ISEAL is committed to developing strong and sustainable partnerships in sport with mutual benefits to each partner”, says ISEAL Director Michael McKenna. It’s partly due to the strength of these partnerships that the University’s research in human movement and sports science, which includes elite athlete development, has been recognised as ‘well above world standard’ by the latest Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment. The assessment rates research quality in Australia’s higher education institutions using indicators and reviews by internationally-recognised experts.

Eighteen year old Britteny has had a busy start to the year, competing in World Cup Championships all throughout the USA and Europe earlier this year as well as receiving the Junior Athlete of the Year Award at the Ski & Snowboard Australia Awards. Britteny had a top 10 finish in the Mogul event at the World Ski Championships in Norway and the World Cup in the USA. She is currently based at the AIS undergoing the Strength and Conditioning program in preparation of the Australian New Zealand Continental Cup at Perisher.

Rehabilitation for Jades knee reconstruction is going well. She is back to full training after a few initial setbacks. Jade has recently been named in the Hockeyroos squad for next month’s Hockey World League in London with the aim of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. Jade has also been named in the Jillaroos Team and is preparing for the upcoming Junior World Cup. Things are well and truly looking up for Jade.

Alex has had an absolutely thrilling start to his 2013 cycling season. In February he was crowned World Champion in the Team Pursuit at the World Track Cycling Championship in Belarus and had great success at the Australian National Track Cycling Championships, winning the Team Pursuit and the Individual Point’s race. This is Alex’s first time winning individual gold at the national level. His focus has now shifted to road cycling and he is currently in Europe competing in the European Road cycling season aiming to be named in the Australian team for the World Road Cycling Championships in Italy later this year, where he hopes to use his Etihad Airways airfare.

Brad been upgraded to B Grade by Motorcycling Australia meaning he must ride SuperSport for this 2013 season. Brad was recently nominated for a number of local awards and was named the Kyabram Sport Star of the Year for October as well as winning the 2012/2013 Kyabram & Districts Senior Sports Star of the Year. He is the youngest ever recipient of this award. Brad will be traveling to Germany in September to compete in the European Junior Cup.

Olivia placed third in the World Cup Sailing Series and European Championship where she raced against 8 other boats in the second round of the European Circuit. Her sights firmly set on the Sailing World Championships this September in France. Olivia had an exciting start to the year placing 3rd in the Skiff Class at the World Sailing Cup in Melbourne and also placed 3rd at the Australian National Championships. “Just Doohan it” We recently chatted to Brad Shaw of Brad Shaw Racing - upcoming road race star and recipient of the 2013 SAHOF Scholarship & Mentoring Program. Brad was relaxing at a friends house in his country town of Kyabram late 2012 when he got a phone call advising him of his successful Scholarship application. “It was crazy – I was so shocked. I actually had forgotten about it because it had been awhile since I applied. I didn’t expect anything to come from it. I was so stoked when I got that news”, he said. “It’s kept the dream alive for me” Brad said, going onto say that he wasn’t sure where his racing career was going at that point, mainly due to lack of funding for such an expensive sport. “The SAHOF program has opened so many doors for me”, he said, adding “If it wasn’t for SAHOF and this program, I think we would have stopped by now”. The SAHOF Sponsorship & Mentoring Program has enabled the Brad Shaw Racing crew to upgrade bikes, accessories and fund other vital areas for his racing. The mentoring aspect has been an amazing experience so far for Brad as well. Brad’s mentor is SAHOF Member and five time world motorcycling champion, Mick Doohan. The two formally met at the recent SAHOF & Etihad event “Inspire The Nation” in Brisbane and have forged an ongoing relationship since.

“It was pretty cool finding out Mick was going to be my mentor, and then meeting him”, says Brad. “I hope we will keep in contact forever”, Brad says of his mentor, “his help and his contacts towards my racing have been amazing already”, he said. Keeping in touch regularly, they maintain particular close contact prior to Brads races.

Brad’s grateful for a wide range of support, not only from SAHOF and Doohan, but of course his sponsors, the local community of Kyabram, his family, friends and his boss where he is an apprentice signwriter. “If I hadn’t had the help this last year I wouldn’t have been able to upgrade my bike for the seniors competitions”, clearly a major requirement for his level of competition.

“My dream is to live and compete overseas one day; to never give up and to always have fun”, he said. Costing around $80,000 to do a six-month competitive season in Europe, there’s still some way to go with funding for this dream. Brad is confident he will use his sponsored Etihad Airways flight to at least be able to return to Europe in September to compete in the European Junior Cup in German for a couple of weeks.

The last time he was overseas was for the 2010/2011 Championships in England which he says was a highlight of his career so far. “There’s so many races I have loved but the 2010/11 year was definitely my best season”, he said. Aside from training and competing, Brad enjoys maintaining and improving his fitness, cycling, fishing, hunting and hanging out with his friends. With his profile picking up around the country now, his media folio is growing. With no formal media training, Brad is a

natural to interview “I’ve really been enjoying it – I just get in the zone and start yappering away” he said. We hope that Brad’s profile continues to increase and that with the continued help from his mentor, SAHOF, team, sponsors and backing from the motorcycling industry that he will be able to secure his place on the international circuit in coming years. We look forward to keeping you updated on Brad’s progress.

the National Sports Museum

This year the National Sports Museum is celebrating five years since it opened its doors at the MCG. In its anniversary year, the museum continues to present world-class exhibitions and multimedia displays showcasing the great moments, people and events in Australia’s sporting history. In April, the museum marked 20 years since Nicky Winmar made his powerful statement with a new showcase, Black and Proud: A stand against racism. The exhibition takes visitors back to April 17 in 1993 when, at the conclusion of the Collingwood - St Kilda game at Victoria Park, Winmar turned to Collingwood fans, raised his St Kilda jumper, pointed at his stomach and said

“I’m black and I’m proud to be black” in response to racial taunts. The exhibition features never-before-seen images captured of Winmar before and after his momentous gesture, as well as a selection of images and objects that demonstrate how the moment continues to be relevant today. On display is a collection of posters, artworks and photographs that reflect the gesture, including work from Melbourne-based street artist Regan Tamanui (aka HAHA), paintings by Indigenous artists Hudson Dinah and Dan Kelly, and cartoons by Rocco Fazzari and Peter Nicholson. The Aboriginal All Stars guernsey of Melbourne Football Club player Neville Jetta has also been included as a symbol of what Winmar’s legacy has meant for others. Dr Matthew Klugman, guest curator of the exhibition, said it was fitting that on the 20th anniversary of Winmar’s powerful gesture, the National Sports Museum celebrated the impact that Winmar’s action has had both on sport in Australia and as a symbol of pride for Indigenous Australians.

“It’s hard to think of a more important popular Australian image over the last two decades. It’s up there with the 1968 Black Power Salute as a defining image of race and sport, and its enduring significance can be seen in the way it continues to be shown over and over again – in newspapers, posters, galleries and on city walls,” Dr Klugman said. More recently, the National Sports Museum and the Australian Racing Museum have joined forces to celebrate the achievements of champion Australian racehorse Black Caviar with a one-off display. From now until the end of January, the National Sports Museum will feature the trophies from the great mare’s 25-win career, including the treasured Diamond Jubilee Stakes trophy where she showed the world why she is regarded as the greatest sprinter of all-time with a memorable win at Royal Ascot. The trophies feature alongside the racing saddle used by jockey Luke Nolen on Black Caviar for their TJ Stakes win in 2011, and the iconic jockey colours silks designed by Shannon Wilkie whose parents are part-owners of Black Caviar.

The display will also feature the race book for the Cromwell Handicap at Flemington on April 18, 2009 when Black Caviar won her first race. Black Caviar’s exhibition follows the highly successful Racing Style – 50 Years of Fashions on the Field, which concluded at the end of June. The exhibition featured original winning outfits and millinery from five decades of racing’s iconic fashion competition, and saw the 2012 Flemington Fashions on the Field winners added to its display of prize-winners in April of this year. Tony Charlton AM His association with SAHOF spanned decades - as a great supporter, General Member and friend. “He was a special person, thoughtful and professional” says SAHOF GM, Bob Lay. “Tony was nominated for his huge contribution to sport in media and he was inducted to the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in October 2007. He left a legacy to Australian sport and will be sadly missed” says Bob. Tony gave his time generously and freely to sporting and charitable causes including SAHOF, the Alfred Hospital, Victorian Olympic Council and the Australian Commemorative Plaques group which marks sites of Australian military involvements around the world.

Since then he has continued as a presenter at a host of sports functions, notably at the MCG. An outstanding Australian, Charlton was awarded an OAM in 1990 and an AM in 2003. In 2008 he received the Order of Merit from the Australian Olympic Committee.

Fraser claims top spot SAHOF Legend Dawn Fraser AO MBE was crowned Australia’s greatest female athlete at the Centenary of Canberra Sportswomen Ball in February. Eight of the voted top 10 women athletes are SAHOF Members and Legends including Betty Cuthbert AM MBE, Layne Beachley, Margaret Court AO MBE, Heather McKay AM MB, Rechelle Hawkes OAM, Shirley Strickland AO MBE and Catherine Freeman OAM.

Athletics’ past and present athletes recently gathered in the Olympic Room at the MCG to celebrate the astonishing Athletics achievement of our Australian women. Athletics International hosted the “Salute to Australia’s Women Athlete” breakfast, with SAHOF members Marjorie Jackson-Nelson AO MBE, Pam Ryan AM MBE, Judy Pollock and SAHOF General Manager and ex sprinter Bob Lay attending the celebration. What a wonderful function to reminisce these remarkable achievements of our Australia women. Bowling great McGrath joins Cricket Hall SAHOF Member Glenn McGrath AM was Inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in February this year. McGrath throughout his 14 year Test career took a huge 563 wickets. This is the highest amount of wickets taken by a fast bowler in the history of Australian Cricket.

Change of role for Goulding After 24 years as the Australian equestrian team vet, SAHOF Member Denis Goulding has moved onto a new exciting role. Denis will continue to work with the Equestrian team however his responsibly will now be primary as a team veterinary mentor. Denis said he is looking forward to passing on his experiences and knowledge to the next generation of vets.

Paralympic gold medalist and SAHOF Member David Hall OAM has produced a video tutorial “Let’s Roll-Learning Wheelchair Tennis with the Pros”. The tutorial covers all areas of the wheelchair game, such as basic strokes and mobility, advanced strokes and mobility, mental toughness, wheelchair selection and injury prevention. Hall hopes this tutorial will help develop and inspire the next generation of wheel chair tennis greats. Netball New Zealand has appointed former Australian captain, Queensland Firebirds coach and SAHOF Board Member Vicki Wilson OAM (104 Test caps) to the Silver Ferns coaching panel. Roy Emerson Honoured Scoring a perfect 10 Recently appointed SAHOF Board Member Layne Beachley had yet another successful surfing competition at the ISA World Masters in Ecuador in April. Beachley led Team Australia to a strong performance scoring a perfect 10 point ride.

SAHOF Member, Roy Emerson, who boasts more grand slam titles than any man in tennis history, was honoured at the 2013 Australian Open Legends’ Lunch. All up, Emerson won 28 Grand Slam titles including 16 doubles crowns in his career. We send all our best to this amazing sports star who now resides overseas.

SAHOF Member and Australian Football superstar, the late John Coleman will be honoured with a Bronze Statue at the “MCG”. Coleman joins SAHOF Legends Leigh Matthews and Sir Donald Bradman AC and SAHOF Members Norm Smith and Shane Warne. Coleman had an illustrious career with Essendon Football club and it is the fitting Colman will be part of the Australia Post Avenue of Legends. Gaze internationally recognized Basketball star and SAHOF Member Andrew Gaze AM was inducted into the Federation of International Basketball Associations’ Hall of Fame in May. Andrew now joins his father as one of only three Australia’s to be inducted into the Federation of International Basketball Associations’ Hall of Fame. A big congratulations Andrew.

Honours Rolls SAHOF Member, David Parkin OAM has achieved a lot during his football career, and we congratulate him on his recent receipt of a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to sport, in particular ‘Australian Rules Football’.

Luc Longley Award Australian Basketball has paid tribute to the career of SAHOF Member Luc Longley by creating a Basketball Australia “Luc Longley under 18 Fair Play Award” named in his honour. Luc’s illustrious basketball career included representing Australia at three Olympic Games, two World Championships and was the first Australian ever to be drafted into the NBA.

SAHOF Member, Ronald Clarke AO MBE, was awarded an Officer of the Order (AO) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for distinguished service to the community through a range of leadership roles with local government and philanthropic organisations, and to the promotion of athletics. Grand Prix Greats Honoured Australia’s two world F1 champions Sir Jack Brabham AO OBE and Alan Jones AO have been honoured by CAMS and the Australian GP Corporation with bronze busts unveiled in March by Victorian premier Denis Napthine at the Rolex AGP at Albert Park.

Australian squash great and SAHOF Member, Michelle Martin OAM was award a Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for her service to squash. Michelle was one of the country’s most prolific athletes on the international squash scene winning three consecutive world titles in 1993, 94, and 95, and winning six straight British Open crowns – in 1993, 94, 95, 96, 97 and 98.
