Minerva Local School teachers have agreed to $1.4 million in concession in their new threeyear contract approved Monday. According to Minerva Local School Supt. Joe Chaddock, the Minerva Local Education Association agreed to the concessions over a 3-year period to help offset cuts in state aid of approximately $1 million annually. Under the terms of the new agreement, teachers will receive no pay or step increases and will work 15 additional minutes each day with a focus on increasing student achievement, Chaddock explained. Also, teachers will be required to contribute 12% instead of the present 8% of the cost of health insurance by the end of the agreement, he noted. Speaking on behalf of the Board of Education, Board President Robert Foltz said: “Our teachers really put our students first during very difficult economic times. Minerva students are fortunate to have such a dedicated staff that values our community and the education of its youth, Foltz added. In a statement on behalf of the teachers, Minerva Local Education Association President Niki Blazer said: “Minerva teachers understand the difficult economic times our community is facing and the massive cuts that have been made to the Minerva District from the state. “Our teachers were willing to make financial sacrifices to help keep the district solvent. Our focus is and always will be on creating the best learning environment possible for Minerva children, she added. Last month, the Minerva Board of Education approved a staff reduction plan of $1.2 million. “The reduction in staffing coupled with the concessions from the teachers will greatly reduce a projected $6.2 million deficit by fiscal year 2016, Supt. Chaddock said. The reduction is to include 12-15 teacher and administrative positions and 2-5 classified jobs.
