DULLES VIKINGS New coach determined to energize Dulles By Michael Sudhalter msudhalter@ fortbendstar.com
Oschlor Flemming didn’t move 300 miles south of his hometown to settle for mediocrity. The Dulles High first-year head football coach was part of two state championship teams (2012 and 2013) at Denton Guyer and another one that finished second (2010). “I saw the tradition that Dulles had, and I wanted to bring my expertise here and bring Dulles to where Guyer is,” said Flemming, who played running back at Texas A&M between 1999 and 2003.
“It takes a lot of determination and a little bit of stubbornness. We have to create the habit of being an every day guy in the classroom, the weight room and everything.” Flemming said he’d learned quite a bit from Aggies head coaches R.C. Slocum and Dennis Franchione. “You get a grasp on what it takes to have success,” Flemming said. Flemming succeeds Jim Creech, who’d been the Vikings’ head coach for the past 20 years and on the DHS football staff since the early 1980s. Dulles returns six starters four on offense and two on de-

fense from last season’s team that finished 4-6 and missed the playoffs. The Vikings will compete in the newly-created 6A classification, but Flemming said he hasn’t thought a lot about the 6A-23 competition yet. “I’m so focused on Dulles that I haven’t had a chance to look at anyone else,” Flemming said. “Winning district is great and all, but you’ve just got to get to the tournament. I’m a pretty optimistic guy, so I think we can compete this season.” The Vikings will look to qualify for the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. Dulles will tune up for district with a pair of games against Aug. 29 at Houston North Forest and Sept. 6 vs. Terry (at Hall Stadium). Both
of those squads reached the playoffs last season. “We’ll have to play good, sound, mistake-free football (to be successful),” Flemming said. Flemming said the Vikings will run a multiple set offense, and they’ll base out of a 4-3 defensively. A.J. Rice is a senior quarterback who didn’t play last season, but he played as a sophomore after transferring in from Westbury Christian. “He’s a great athlete and leader,” Flemming said. Flemming said junior running back Brajon Fuqua is “probably the most explosive back I’ve coached in a while... he’s going to be fun to watch this year.” Rice and Fuqua will be protected by an offensive line with the returning experience of tackles Keith Domino and Garrett Kelly Reuben Muhammad, a former quarterback, will be the leading wide receiver among a group of young receivers. Derrick Jones and Ben Gansallo are expected to lead the Vikings on the defensive line.
