Tears and frustration from parents were common at a community forum April 2, to discuss the Lamar CISD Attendance Boundary Committee recommendations in regard to the opening of Adolphus Elementary in August. The committee's proposal will move some students who are currently attending McNeill, Frost and Hubenak elementaries to Adolphus.

All of the elementaries, including Adolphus, feed into Briscoe Junior High and Foster High School. Some parents who are not currently zoned to attend the new elementary school want their children to attend Adolphus. Other parents who are zoned to attend the new elementary school want their children to stay where they are. "You just can't continue to move my children," said Melinda Litchfield, from the

Parkway Lakes neighborhood. Her two children currently attend Hubenak after her neighborhood was re-zoned from McNeill two years ago. "(Adolphus) will be my fourth grader's third elementary school. School daze.......Although he is (mostly) a Republican and I am (mostly) a Democrat, besides the ambivalence about our political beliefs, Joe Scarborough and I have one thing in common. Today, Tuesday, April 9 is both of our birthdays. Sadly, I noticed he had to do his “Morning Joe” TV show and I have to write this column. I think it is funny that most of the people that former FBISD board member Lisa Rickert and her team fired at FBISD have now been rehired by FBISD if they want to be rehired. The latest is Charles Dupree about whom I have received anonymous critical emails about. But let’s recap: When Lisa Rickert finally got a majority on the school board and an

attack dog in the guise of Liz Mitton, at her first school board meeting, she arranged her election as president of the FBISD school board, and immediately at the meeting, in a show of trailer park manners, she relegated school superintendent Betty Baitland to the end of the table. When Baitland asked if she could wait until the break to move her things, Rickert said “No.” With that one move, Rickert solidified the coterie against her and made up the minds of those straddling the fence. In that one move, she lost the rest of her term and the next election. Although Dr. Baitland, who had come up through the ranks of FBISD and truly loved the district, offered to stay until a

new superintendent as hired, her offer was refused and the little-experienced human resource assistant superintendent was appointed. The poor lady wasn’t even a very good HR person. Her appointment accomplished one thing: it allowed Lisa Rickert to slowly dismantle FBISD as it was then. A disgraced attorney was hired--an attorney who had his office at a Mail Box Etc. When I busted him on that, he rented an office from a Chinese lady attorney which I took a picture of and nobody really believed it was his office decorated in ornate faux Chinese style. As a city council member or an employee of the city of Houston, he was caught several times absent without leave

from his job--washing his car, taking his children to the Zoo, etc. He immediately was charged with finding some legal dirt on Dr. Baitland and Dr. Dupree, the CFO she had promoted. He found nothing, no matter how bad Liz Mitton tried to make it sound in various blogs. In fact, a famous line from the time was board member Stan Magee shouting, “Do you mean to tell me that’s all you can find!?!” Baitland happily retired, spending a lot of time with her grandchildren at the beach and Lisa and Liz both lost their next elections amid large vote margins and many tears and much gnashing of tears. So that’s how we got Tim Jenney. I suspect there weren’t many qualified applicants after word got out about FBISD. I notice that Lisa Rickert may be trying to make a comeback as I’ve seen her out and about a various events. School daze again......Then another story that is about one to two years old but has surfaced in another local weekly paper that, I guess, has nothing else to print. The story is all about former FBISD Superintendent Raj Chopra who eventually left here, but not after the board had given him a sweet contract and four years later a sweet deal to leave. Among other things, Dr. Chopra was given a contract that called for FBISD to pay for his house back in Kansas until it sold. Of course, it wasn’t going to sell very soon as his older children were still living in it to go to college. He eventually sold it for much more than he told the board it would sell for. He never told the school board any different. He was given a huge car allowance, a large “entertainment” budget, a membership in the local country club with monthly dues paid, an expense account, and a payment of his house in Fort Bend among other things. When we criticized this, we were told that most executives were given these perks in private companies and the school district had to compete. Then besides all this, he was

fired before his programs really had a chance to work, although he greatly reduced administrative jobs and brought up test scores. He was sent off with a nice severance package. Interestingly, these same criticisms were lodged at him some 10 years later in his new school district, proving once again that a tiger doesn’t change his spots. (Yes, I know it’s stripes. I’m trying to be funny, but I don’t want you to think I’m simply stupid.) At Southwestern College, where Dr. Chopra was superintendent, his contract called for him to receive a salary of $204,000. In addition to his salary, he had an automobile allowance of $1,000 a month, an entertainment allowance of $14,000 a year, and a housing allowance of $28,000 a year. He resigned in November 2010, and received the equivalent of six months’ base salary. Since he was indicted with many other school officials from other districts at the same time in 2012, I have searched the web for additional news only to come up dry. I have a feeling the charges have been quietly dismissed. At the time he was reported to be in Texas suffering from depression. Wanna bet it’s in Fort Bend? More school daze..... In other school news, State Rep. Rick (Dana) Miller was the only member of the Fort Bend delegation to vote for the school vouchers which are

reportedly dead in the water. I called Commissioner James Patterson to chide him for supporting Miller and he told me he didn’t support any candidate because as a County commissioner, he has to work with whoever wins. That’s not what jacquie Baly and her friends think. I believe Patterson but I know for a fact that Miller told former school board president Sonal Buchar that he did not support vouchers. Since State Senator Dan Patrick was his big buddy you would have to be pretty stupid to believe that he would actually vote against vouchers. Next.....It seems I am an international star after all. The following is an email I received from Ireland: “Hi Bev, Just watched you on Irish TV. Charlene Hill murder trial. Just wanted to say well done. You came across a strong, fine women. If you’re ever in Ireland, you can stay with me. Not a big house, but house that has loads of fun and love. A Deep Cleansing Desperately Needed…Not Just On Our Faces As many believe the European Union (EU) needs to be disbanded, so goes the same for the United Nations (UN). Obama waited until one day after his reelection until he began pushing for the UN Arms Trade Treaty, which establishes UN supreme power over our Constitution. The Treaty further allows every UN state to keep records of all arms transfers. This is utter insanity when parents are denied verification if our children are still attending college classes, parents are held at bay in helping our minor children avoid an abortion, hospitals cannot disclose medical updates to family members to

get to a loved one’s death bed in time to pray with them and say final good-byes or families can’t help their loved ones get the critical medical help with mental illness because access is denied while law-abiding arms purchases will be public record across the globe—including to our enemies that we are waging war against and then gullible enough to spend $$$ rebuilding their countries. Simply put: We are funding the UN that is hell bent on destroying us—with this administration leading the pack and Congress still refusing to begin impeachment. When the Senate votes to ratify this Treaty, every approving senator needs to

Sugar Land again named ADL Community of Respect Five years after being named the nation's first "Community of Respect," the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) again recognized Sugar Land for its ongoing commitment to foster an inclusive and respectful community. Sugar Land has been a recipient of the award every year since the program's inception. The ADL formally presented its 2012 "Community of Respect" award to Sugar Land during a City Council meeting on March 5. The "Community of Respect" program is an initiative to help governments, non-profit organizations, faith institutions, businesses and institutes of higher learning create an atmosphere that rejects prejudice and fosters respect and an appreciation for diversity.

Sugar Land was recognized for efforts to complete three activities supporting a "Community of Respect," including: • implementation of multi-cultural training for more than 180 employees; • an ongoing series of community newsletter articles that focus on multicultural traditions that reflect the demographics of Sugar Land; and • an evaluation of future park programming options to reflect the diverse needs of the community. Schiff Elementary announces fundraising event on April 12 Schiff Elementary has announced that it will hold its 2013 Shark-a-thon on Friday, April 12, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. All community residents are invited to participate to support the local school. The Shark-a-thon is Schiff Elementary School’s annual fundraising event and is the largest fundraiser for the school in terms of total dollars raised. Ideas currently under consideration for this year’s proceeds will go towards continued investments in classroom technology, an outdoor pavilion, and additional interior beautification. The 2013 Shark-a-thon will consist of games, inflatables, a rock wall, gyro spin, laser tag, food, raffle and a silent auction. Campbell Elementary Kids for Kindness hosts Book Drive They love their librarian, Mrs. Peters! To show their appreciation, they collected gently used books and donated them to Seguin Early Childhood Center. The book drive was held hosted during the week of the Spring Book Fair. Students dropped off gently used books to donate as they went in to purchase new books for themselves. They collected over 500 books. The staff

at Seguin Early Childhood Center were very excited with a surprise load of good books to share with students. This month they learned about the virtue of honesty. Honesty is choosing to be truthful in whatever you say or do. Go out into the world and spread some kindness. Dew Tell Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Speakers Committee Members Ivan and Jo Butterfield performed “Dew Tell-A Murder on the Bayou” for Dew House Docents in April--the “ghosts” from the mid 1900’s performed the story of Frank Dew (Frank and his brothers were among the early founders and supporters of both the Houston Fat Stock Show and the Ft Bend County Fair) and Lucyle Richards, the Cowgirl Rodeo Star, who shot him. Sugar Land's drop-off recycling centers at 113 Gillingham Lane and 4802 Scenic Rivers Drive will close on June 1. The City now contracts with Republic Services to provide recycling for all residents and businesses. With the addition of the commercial franchise, Republic Services is contacting businesses to discuss service levels for solid waste and recycling. Residents currently receive automated curbside recycling collection once per week utilizing a City-issued recycling cart. Sugar Land's curbside recycling program was expanded last year to include all colors of glass bottles and jars. The addition of a green waste program ensures all green waste -grass clippings, leaves, brush, tree limbs, etc., will be recycled rather than sent to a landfill. What To Do About Dry Eyes

Dry eye syndrome occurs when the eye cannot make enough tears. Tears are necessary for clear vision by providing moisture to the eyes and washing away particles. Common causes of dry eyes include direct sun exposure, smoking, second-hand smoke exposure, dry workplace, previous eye surgery, or burns. Hormone replacement therapy, certain antihistamines (Benadryl), and certain antidepressants (Elavil) can dry out the eyes as a side effect. Symptoms of dry eyes include frequent, watery tearing of the eye, light sensitivity, and blurry vision. A doctor should be consulted for severe problems that include vision loss, swelling, or painful eyes. Artificial tears are available overthecounter and provide the best solution for dry eyes. There are many different brands to try. Thicker artificial tears last longer and may mo mentarily cause blurry vision when compared to the thinner artificial tears. Artificial tears come in preservative and preservative-free forms. For people who frequently use them, it is recommended to use a preser vative-free formula. For people who may sleep with their eyelids partially open, artificial tear ointments used at bedtime has been shown to improve morning vision. Restasis is a commonly prescribed antiinflammatory eye drop prescribed for severe dry eyes.

ACKERMAN Gerald “Jerry” Ira Ackerman, 66, and his wife, Bonnie Lynn Bolden Ackerman, 66, both died Tuesday afternoon, March 26, 2013, in Sugar Land, Texas as a result of an automobile accident. Born in Akron, Ohio, Bonnie was a daughter of the late Charles Bolden and the late Eileen Kirkman Bolden. Bonnie retired from Imperial Sugar. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Jerry was a son of the late Nathan Ackerman and the late Gertrude Honigsfeld Ackerman. Jerry was a retired Certified Public Accountant. Surviving are their daughter, Beth Ackerman Ornelas and her husband, Daniel, of Richmond, Texas; their son, Craig Ackerman and his wife, Shannon, of Missouri City, Texas; their two grandsons, CJ Ackerman and Chase Ackerman; their step-grandson, Blake Bielamowicz and his wife, Amy; their great-granddaughter, Breelyn Bielamowicz; Bonnie’s sister, Penny Bruce and her husband, Mark, of Cleveland, Ohio and brother, Kirk and his wife, Yvonne, of Cleveland, Ohio and Jerry’s brother, Dr. Larry L. Public meeting for pedestrian and bicycle master plan is April 15

A public meeting to receive feedback on draft recommendations for the City's Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan is scheduled for April 15, from 6-8 p.m., in the Cane Room at Sugar Land City Hall, 2700 Town Center Blvd. North. The meeting will begin with an open house at 6 p.m. to allow public review of maps and displays. A presentation will follow at 6:30 p.m. Draft goals and a draft map will be posted at www.sugarlandtx.gov/ pedbike prior to the meeting. The draft plan incorporates public input from a variety of activities, including: • an online survey that resulted in more than 375 responses; • an online mapping activity that resulted in more than 1,000 comments; • nine stakeholder meetings; • a public meeting with more than 50

attendees; and • an Online Town Hall. An 11-member citizen task force, including members nominated by City Council, guided development of the plan. The plan will update the City's existing Hike and Bike Trails Master Plan to include the potential for walking and biking as a means of transportation in addition to recreational uses. The draft plan identifies a network of pedestrian and bicycle routes, focusing on connecting key destinations such as schools and commercial areas. In addition, the draft plan identifies areas for improved crossings at major barriers such as U.S. Highway 59, State Highway 6, U.S. Highway 90A, the railroad and the Brazos River. The day included double elimination tournaments for both volleyball and softball. Mayors attend St. Mark’s groundbreaking ceremony Last Sunday, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church held a groundbreaking ceremony to signify the commencement of new construction for a children’s building. In addition to dedicated parishioners, Mayor Vincent Morales of Rosenberg and Mayor Evalyn Moore of Richmond accompanied Reverend Bert Baetz as they shoveled the ceremonial dirt. Also, part of the festivities

was a shovel contest. Best Decorated Shovel was won by Jeri Culberson and Shovel Best Depicting Core Values was won by Lynnett Alderson. Awards were also given to smallest shovel (half inch) and biggest shovel (12 feet). Texas style BBQ was served to all attendees who enjoyed a nice spring day of fellowship in anticipation of their step forward benefitting the community. Fort Bend County Commissioners recently voted unanimously to adopt a resolution in support of the full expansion of Medicaid coverage. The resolution endorses the expansion of Medicaid coverage to all Texas U.S. citizen adults living at or below 133 percent of the federal poverty level, in accordance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act, a/k/a Obamacare. Others across the state have been urging the same thing. Governor Rick Perry and the state legislature will be determining whether to accept expansion of the government health insurance program for the poor. He reportedly declared last week that he would not take federal funds for the program expansion amounting to an estimated $100 billion dollars over the next 20 years as part of the Affordable Care Act. The resolution by commissioners court states that the federal government would cover the entire cost of expanding Medicaid for participating states during the first three years and would pay no less than 90 percent of the total cost thereafter. It also states that during 2014 – 2017, expansion would bring $27.2 billion in federal revenue to Texas in return for a $3.1 billion state investment. Some argue, “like it or not, the Affordable Care Act is already here,” and all anybody really would want is access to health care for all. “Covering the uninsured means better insurance value for all Texans with private health insurance,” reads the locally adopted resolution intended to serve a public purpose.
