Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is first in Texas to implant new medical device in patient to prevent pulmonary embolism Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is the first in Texas to implant the new Crux® Vena Cava Filter in a patient at risk for pulmonary embolism (PE), a condition caused by a large blood clot migrating to the lungs. The filter is designed to trap these blood clots before they can lead to potentially fatal outcomes in patients with recurrent PE. Once inserted, they are an important tool for physicians in preventing recurrent and potentially deadly PE in patients. “We continuously strive to use the safest, most technicallyadvanced and effective devices and procedures to ensure the best outcomes for our patients,” said Mohiuddin. Their unique design allows insertion into either the jugular (neck) or femoral (leg) vein to trap a clot if it were to break free, while also allowing blood to flow normally through the blood

Sugar Land Hospital, implanted the device in a 51-year-old male patient on February 10, 2014. The patient came to the ER with pain in his leg, and was soon diagnosed with a blood clot in his leg. Using the Crux Vena Cava Filter, Mohiuddin and Tripathy used medication to break up the clot and filter it, preventing the possibility of the clot breaking away and moving to the lung—a potentially fatal outcome. Once the clot is dissolved, the filter is retrieved. “The physicians and nurses

Mardi Gras party festive on Texas Primary Election day With a piano accordion playing fast tempo along with the sounds of a rub-board adding to the flavor of what is known as “la la” music, Fort Bend’s annual Mardi Gras party couldn’t have been any better. The tradition on Fat Tuesday taking place locally featured Jabo “The Prince of Zydeco” and his band at a bash that had people flocking to Legacy Ford alongside U.S. 59, where the party was hosted. Not exactly the Big Easy,

but the party-goers were taking it easy for sure on festive mode while election returns from the Texas primary were being counted that evening. As for Mardi Gras, this is a traditional celebration of the day before Lent and the day before Ash Wednesday. At this Mardi Gras event, savoring tasty foods and king cake provided by community partners turned out many celebrants, some in costume and some not, and among those spotted were Jake Messinger, Liz Moreno, Shannon Orsak, Central FB Chamber Alliance President Shanta Kuhl, Carlo Arcilla, the perfumed Bud Light girls handing out beads, Tony Francis and Gilbert Limones. A little bit of New Orleans with music, laughter, the beads and good treats, this Mardi Gras get together, which no doubt took place among others in Fort Bend, was probably the biggest

The Grant-A-Starr Foundation is holding its 6th Annual Family Fun Run & Walk! The charity event date has been set for Saturday, March 22, at the Sugar Land Memorial Park, 15300 University Blvd, Sugar Land. The 1 mile Fun Run/Walk begins at 9AM and the 5K Chip Timed Run/Walk begins at 9:30AM. Race day registration will be available at 6:30AM. An award ceremony and post race party is at 10:30AM. The Grant-A-Starr Foundation was founded to celebrate the life of Grant Starr, a precious seven-year-old boy who passed away from unidentified virus. What makes the Grant-AStarr Foundation Fun Run unique is the student steering committee. It is made up of local area high school volunteers who have taken a deep personal interest in the event. Slater, a senior at Clements HS, says, “We have been blessed by great sponsorship in the past, and now we want to take it to the next level! Our goal this year is to raise $50,000 for the Foundation and obviously, we need generous

Fort Bend ISD’s Ridgemont Early Childhood Center selected as statewide finalist Fort Bend ISD’s Ridgemont Early Childhood Center was recently named one of five regional finalists in the 2014 H-E-B® annual Excellence in Education awards program. As a regional finalist in the early childhood category, Ridgemont received $5,000 and will advance to the statewide competition. More than 60 applications were filed in the category. “I believe the comprehensive alignment with our elementary school campus and our strong

collaborations with various agencies throughout the community separates our early childhood center from the pack,” said Ridgemont Elementary and Early Childhood Center Principal Dr. Robert Long. To determine overall statewide winners, a panel of judges toured each facility and talked with administration, staff and parents. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Houston in May. The winning early childhood facility will receive $25,000.

“We are honored to have been named a finalist in the competition and excited about the opportunity that winning this award could provide for the students and families for both Ridgemont and the greater Fort Bend community,” said Ridgemont Early Childhood Center Manager Nick Cantu. If chosen as the winner, Cantu plans to propose the construction of an exercise track that surrounds both the elementary school and early childhood center.
