Bend County Spelling Bee Congratulations to St. Laurence Catholic School 8th grader Neville Tom for earning second place in the Fort Bend County Spelling Bee!  The Bee was held on Saturday, February 15 at Briscoe Junior High School in Richmond. Neville, the winner of the St. Laurence Bee, competed against students from Fort Bend ISD, Lamar ISD, and students from local parochial and private schools.   Neville was matched against 41 other students who ranged from 2nd to 8th grade.   The first and second place spellers Neville competed against were stiff competition! Both had won 1st and 2nd place in last year’s Ft. A new music program begins March 18 for tenors, baritones, and basses for Cantabilé Your NEW Source for Auto Loans The Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS) named Sugar Land Parks and Recreation the "2014 Texas Gold Medal Award Winner" in the 50,000100,000 population category. The award honors communities that demonstrate excellence in long-range park planning, park and recreation resource management, community programs and events, public input, marketing efforts and agency recognition during the past three-years.   Sugar Land was credited with a number of accomplishments during the past three years, including the following: • Funding for the Sugar Land Legacy Foundation was established, a group that facilitates donations for parks projects. • The City is developing an "Art in Parks & Public Spaces" program, commissioned a "Cultural Arts Master Plan" for the community and installed pieces by worldfamous sculptor Bernar Venet in Oyster Creek Park. • The City's first Indoor Recreation Center opened in July 2011. The center features a multi-purpose room for classes and events, a serving kitchen, multipurpose exercise room, a gymnasium, locker rooms, indoor and outdoor seating areas, an activity lawn and connections to the future Imperial Park trails. • Sugar Land doubled programmable space for seniors while maintaining rentable space for the community with the opening of the T.E. Harman Center in 2012. • More than 281 acres of land was acquired for future parks. • Voters approved bonds totaling $31.5 million in 2013 to fund two parks projects. The Fort Bend Boys Choir is offering an exciting, new program for young tenors, baritones and basses from local area middle and high schools called Cantabilé. Awardwinning Artistic Director William R. Adams has worked for over 32 years with boys with unchanged voices and has also directed the organization’s alumni choir of changed voices for the past 15 years. If you are a young man who wants to improve his overall tone and sight-reading skills, Cantabilé is for you. The additional training you receive can help provide a stronger edge for UIL competitions and school programs. Tuition is only $25 and weekly rehearsals will be an hour long on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. starting March 18. Rehearsals will be held at the First United Methodist Church-Missouri City, 3900 Lexington Blvd., Missouri City.
