Yanone on his refreshing type system

ff Amman, typeface for a Middle Eastern capital

Defying easy categorization, as it neither follows the clichÊs of the orientalist vision of what an Arab Muslim city should be like, nor the purely modern principles of western town planning, Amman’s identity is hybrid, multilayered and complex. The best image we could find for it was that of a collage. Ahmad Humeid ceo of syntax, Amman

Creating an italic for the family was very interesting. It was the first real italic version of a digital Arabic font ever. The Ruqaa style was the choice to give the impression of the normal handwriting of Arabs to accompany the Naskh. It was created for a Middle Eastern city. It was created bilingually from scratch. Finally I would like to mention that the Amman typeface with its 22 fonts in four styles is one of the largest Arabic / Latin typeface I ever saw. Hussein Alazaat calligrapher and graphic designer at syntax, Amman

The practice of creating Arabic type based on the geometry of Latin fonts is fairly common in the Arab world, especially in the field of logo conversion. But this is not what Yanone or syntax where trying to do. I would describe Yanone’s approach as contemporary, cross-cultural traditionalism. The Arabic and Latin type faces were to share common traits, but each should respect their own calligraphic and writing tradition, including overall letter shapes and horizontal / vertical stroke contrasts. Ahmad Humeid ceo of syntax, Amman

Yanone started to work on the Latin and Arabic letters based on the concept of the cubic houses of Amman. As far as I know that was one of the first attempts in history of type design to create a type face for a city that talks Arabic next to Latin characters. Hussein Alazaat calligrapher and graphic designer at syntax, Amman

Ruq’aa

Arabic did not use to have an Italic as a decorative script. But since much type setting in the Arab world today happens bilingually, often English and Arabic next to each other, the Arabic script needs an Italic to mark words that are marked in the English counterpart. Until today it has been the habit of digital type foundries to ship slanted Arabic Italics to accompany the Upright. I broke with that habit to deliver the first real Arabic Italic. I chose the handwriting style Ruq’aa to accompany the Naskh, because it most closely resembles the handwriting derivative that is most used for Italics in the Latin script.

In late 2008 I set out to Amman / Jordan following an invitation by Ahmad Humeid, ceo of local design and branding office syntax. They were to re-brand the capital’s municipality in preparation of the city’s centennial celebrations. The type face was never officially commissioned, though. It was more of a birthday present of syntax and me to the city, and the perfect university graduation project for me. Whether the officials at the municipality are aware that they use a custom type face with several typographic novelties remains unclear. However the type face is now widely used for all kinds of municipal services in Amman. ¶ It consists of a seven weights in the Sans Serif and four weights in the Serif family, each with their Italic and containing both the Latin and the Arabic alphabet. Twenty-two fonts altogether. It is one of the largest bilingual families ever made, one of the few ever to be designed bilingually from scratch and the the first ever to contain a real Italic as opposed to slanted Italics. ¶ It will be released in the fontfont library around may 2010 to make it available to a greater audience in the Middle East.

I was born in Dresden, former East German republic, in 1982. The family moved to Addis Ababa / Ethiopia in 1988 following a professorship of Mechanical Engineering of my father at the capital’s university. I grew up there for nine years until our return to unified Germany in 1997 where I finished school and the year of compulsory civilian service. Out of nowhere my interest in typography arose around that time. I do remember that 70’s shop display type saying Fisch & Geflügel (fish & poultry), set in the typical combination of a very thick Sans Serif and a cursive Script face. My first university application got rejected, as was my second. I had put early type design work of said display lettering in both. After two years of studying Information Technology at the Bauhaus-University in Weimar I finally got accepted for Visual Communications in 2004, again with some early type design work. Just a bit earlier a friend had introduced me to FontLab and the creation of digital font files. That same year I first visited Amman and the design office syntax for an internship and also released my first finished type face Yanone Kaffeesatz. Out of a lack of self confidence I decided to release it for free which turned out to be a huge success for me, as it gained me recognition from a wide audience: It has been downloaded 144,000 times from my web site alone to date. A few other self-released type faces and an internship at the technical department of FontShop International in Berlin followed, and a much revamped Kaffeesatz for fontfont in 2009 called Kava, before I was to commence my graduation with a lucky strike: The typeface for Jordan’s capital. ¶ I have never received professional guidance in the field of type design for it was never a topic at the university. Consequentially I have applied for the Type/Media degree in Den Haag, the response of which I’m now waiting for. Being a kid of the digital age it’s especially the lack of calligraphic writing experience that makes me to want to learn from the masters in Den Haag.
