Amongst all the decorating and shopping and attending of holiday parties, I always try to remind myself of the meaning of the season and to enjoy making new memories with family. Anyone that reads my letters regularly knows that my definition of “family” isn’t traditional. The man I call “Dad” is technically my ex-stepfather. However, he is the only father I have ever known. Even though he isn’t related to me by blood, or now even by marriage to my mother, he is still my Dad and my son’s grandfather. Paul and Dylan’s own relationship is much the same. Even though Paul is not his biological father, he has been the little league coach, helped with the homework, and helped to make him into the wonderful young man he is becoming. I could go on and on. When I look at some of the most treasured relationships in my life and the people I consider to be my family, only a few of them are related to me by blood. With this in mind, I was especially touched by this month’s feature story on the Andrews’ family. I actually am friends with Mark on Facebook and followed his journey from the time they left Florida to travel to the Phillipines to meet their new sons and bring them home. I have continued to follow the ups and downs that have followed and must admit, often laugh at Mark’s posts as he has navigated his way through his new role as a Dad. I finally got to meet Ferds and Caloy when working on this article! They are sweet, polite, and handsome. It was a pleasure to spend some time with them and get a glimpse into their home and family.
