Visiting the Colosseum ... remembering the age of gladiators

The Colosseum is more than 2,000 years old, but it is still one of the most important monuments in the world. It was built by Emperor Vespasian, who was the emperor after Nero. Nero was one of the most famous emperors in the history of Rome — but not for good reasons! He used his power to build himself a palace, called the Golden House (or Domus Aurea). But Emperor Vespasian preferred to build a monument that could hold up to 70,000 spectators. (It was like a modern football stadium!) Discovering the secrets

of the Colosseum!

The Colosseum is full of underground passages called hypogeum. Here, the animals and gladiators waited under the floor. They were brought up to the arena by special devices. These were designed so the gladiators could come charging out of trapdoors and surprise the people.

Where did the name Colosseum come from? It’s original name was Amphitheatrum Flavium. But it probably became known as the Colosseum because it was near a giant statue of Nero called Colosso.

People could go to the Colosseum for free. They were given cards with numbers that told them where to sit. If you look above the Colosseum’s remaining arches, you can still see the numbers that matched the cards.
