Longshot Flutterby Upsets Cut The Charm Stakes

COADY PHOTO

Florida-bred Flutterby

Florida-bred Flutterby outran her longshot odds to win the $50,000 Cut The Charm Stakes at Calder Casino and Race Course on Nov. 16. The five-and-a-half furlong sprint for 2-year-old fillies had a field of 11 and was run over a dirt track rated as fast. Making her first start since a fourth place finish by 23 lengths in the six furlong, $81,000 Cassidy Stakes at Calder on Sept. 28, bettors

sent the Jerry Bozzo-trained chestnut filly to the gate with juicy odds of 18-1. Flutterby, a homebred owned by Jerry Bozzo, only had one win to her credit, a four length win in a six furlong, $28,000 maiden special weight contest at Calder on Sept. 13. The Florida-bred daughter of Congrats out of Zoobie, by First and Only, proved that she was fit and ready when the gates broke open.

At the sound of the bell, Flutterby and Florida-bred Pomeroy Angel broke best of all and jumped to the lead. Ridden by Abdiel Jaen, Pomeroy Angel was along the rail and a head in front of Flutterby as they reached the first quarter-mile in a respectable :21.97. Two lengths behind the leaders was the 5-2 favorite Side Street, ridden by Manoel Cruz, who was a head in front of Joe Bravo and Bella Traviata in fourth. Rounding the far turn, it was still a twohorse duel; however, Flutterby had gained the lead over Pomeroy Angel by a length on the outside. As Flutterby reached the half-mile in :45.78, Bella Traviata and Side Street began to draw closer to Pomeroy Angel to set up their late run at the leader. As they entered the stretch, Flutterby took over the race as Pomeroy Angel gave way. Jockey Luca Panici urged his mount forward, and they opened up a four-and-a-half length lead over Bella Traviata and Side Street as they reached the five-furlong mark in :58.61. Side Street and Cruz made a late charge down

Full Ransom Rallies Late for Upset Win Florida-bred Full Ransom made a fullthrottle charge late to upset the field by a head in the $100,000 Grade 3 Miesque Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park on Nov. 30. The 2year-old dark-bay or brown filly bred by Gregg James was the second longest shot in the mile-long turf race that had a field of six. When the gates sprung open in the Miesque, it was another Florida-bred, Nesso, who went to the front and challenged for the early lead. Nesso, bred by Donald R. Dizney of Ocala, broke best of all at the start but was overtaken by the early leader, Love In The Desert (GB). Ridden by Corey Nakatani, Love In The Desert (GB) set an easy pace as the field covered the 8 THE FLORIDA HORSE • JANUARY 2014

first quarter-mile in :24.55. Nesso, ridden by Martin Garcia, was a half-length behind the leader, while Sushi Garden, ridden by Mario Gutierrez, was two-and-a-half-lengths behind Nesso in third. After breaking on the far outside, Full Ransom was taken to the back by jockey Victor Espinoza, where he rated the field with 4-5 favorite Clenor (IRE). Love In The Desert (GB) continued to lead the race as they made their way down the backstretch. The 2-year-old bay filly reached the half-mile in :49.22, just a head in front of Nesso in second. Sushi Empire was still a length-and-a-half behind the pacesetters in third. Running along the rail, Clenor (IRE)

briefly moved up and grabbed fifth place from Full Ransom, who was sitting chilly at the back of the pack on the outside. Love In The Desert (GB) still held the top spot as she led the pack into the far turn. She reached the quarter pole in 1:13.80, still a head in front of Nesso. Sushi Empire moved forward to challenge Nesso for third, but was still behind by a head as they passed the six furlong mark. Meanwhile, at the back of the pack, Victor Espinoza had asked Full Ransom to begin making her run. Going around the far turn, Full Ransom left Clenor (IRE) in last and made a move on the outside to get within striking distance of the leaders.

the stretch, but they couldn’t close the gap fast enough as Flutterby hit the wire first in 1:05.67. Side Street was second by a length, while Bella Traviata was in third, four-andthree-quarter lengths behind Side Street. The surprise performance by Flutterby rewarded her backers handsomely as she returned $38.60 for the win, $13.80 to place, and $8.20 to show. Post time favorite Side Street paid $5.80 and $3.20, while Bella Traviata paid $4.00 to show. The 10-9 exacta paid a generous $189.60 for a $2 bet, while the 10-9-12 trifecta paid a whopping $1,297.20. Completing the order of finish for the Cut The Charm Stakes were Scripture ‘n Verse, Red Brunette, White Pants Night, Bluesville, City in Sky, Proverbs Thirtyone, Joaqina, and Pomeroy Angel. Joann’s Wildcat was scratched from the race. With her win in the Cut The Charm stakes, Flutterby picked up $29,140 for her owners. She has now earned $51,910 from her five career starts.

Trainer Stephen DiMauro saddled the 1,000th winner of his career at Gulfstream Park Nov. 23, sending out Florida-bred You Never Learn for a narrow victory in the first race. “I survived long enough in a game that I love,” DiMauro said with a chuckle. “I’ve had a good life. I’m in a game that I love and hopefully making money at it. I’ve had a lot of nice horses and good clients.” You Never Learn, a homebred owned by Murray Stroud, raced off the early pace before making a four-wide move around the turn into the homestretch and edging past pacesetter Belladini by three-quarters of a length at the finish of the six-furlong maiden special weight race. The 2-year-old daughter of Keyed Entry out of Baby Be good, by Distorted Humor, was clocked in 1:12.28 under jockey Joe Bravo. DiMauro, who saddled his first winner in 1978, followed in the footsteps of his father, Stephen A. DiMauro, who retired from training in 2002 with 1,159 career victories. The elder DiMauro won the Eclipse Award in 1975 when he trained champions Wajima and Dearly Precious. “If I could be half as good as him, I’d be fine,” DiMauro said. Two Item Limit, a multiple-stakes winning mare who earned more than $1 million, was among the prominent horses trained by DiMauro.

Coming out of the turn, Love In the Desert (GB) began to give way to Sushi Empire and Savings Account, who had held fourth place throughout the race. Full Ransom came out of the turn wide; however, this left her free and clear in the middle of the track as the pack came down the grandstand side. While Sushi Empire held a half-length lead over Love In The Desert (GB) and Savings Account when they passed the eighth-pole in 1:26 flat, Full Ransom was just hitting her topgear in the center of the track. She may have been in fifth place, but she was rolling strong and getting ready to fly by the competition. Full Ransom came on with a full-out

length-and-a-half behind Savings Account. At 12-1 odds, Full Ransom paid a generous $26.80 to win, $10.80 to place, and $8.20 to show. Savings Account paid $8.80 and $7.60, while Sushi Empire returned $10.60 to show. The $2 exacta paid $112.40, while the $2 trifecta returned a whopping $1,190. Completing the order of finish in the Miesque were Nesso, Clenor (IRE), and early pacesetter Love In The Desert (GB). Owned by Deron Pearson and trained by James Cassidy, Full Ransom is the daughter of Full Mandate out of Retroesque, by Red Ransom. She now has two wins from three starts and has earned $93,300 from her career. THE FLORIDA HORSE • JANUARY 2014 9

CHELSEA DURAND PHOTO

Florida-bred Ullapool got loose on the lead early in the $100,000 Garland of Roses Stakes and never looked back as she defeated a field of six by two lengths on Dec. 7. The Garland of Roses Stakes was a six-furlong contest for fillies and mares, 3-years-old and up, over the dirt at Aqueduct Racetrack. Ullapool was making only her second start in 2013 in the Garland of Roses Stakes, following a four-and-aquarter length win in a six-furlong, mid-level allowance/optional claiming race at Belmont Park on Oct. 17. The 4-year-old grey or roan filly had been laid-off for more than a year since her last start, a three-and-three-quarter length score in a six-furlong, $70,000 allowance race at Belmont Park in September 2012. Owned by trainer Eddie Kenneally and Marc Detampel, Ullapool was ready to show that she had shaken off whatever rust had accumulated in the year away from the track. Sent to post as the 3-2 favorite in the race, jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr., was hoping that his mount would handle the muddy track when the gates finally sprung open. Ullapool broke best of all and wasted no time going to the front of the pack. Once she cleared Miss Mischief with Rajiv Maragh and Baby J with Cornelio Velasquez, Ullapool was on cruise-control as she set a respectable pace throughout the race. She cleared the quartermile in :22.36, a length-and-a-half ahead of Baby J and Miss Mischief. She kept it up after a half-mile in :46.14, lengthening her lead to two lengths over Baby J and Delightful Quality. Coming down the stretch, Delightful Quality made a late bid but she was still two lengths behind the leader, who was getting a hand-ride from Ortiz. Ullapool reached the eighth pole in :58.18 before stopping the clock in 1:11.03, two lengths ahead of Delightful Quality, who was three-quarters of a length ahead of Baby

the lead,” said Ortiz. “My horse relaxed pretty good, and she just picked it up, as you saw, at the quarter pole. I was just a passenger.” While Ullapool made the Garland of Roses Stakes look easy, it was actually the second choice for owner-trainer Eddie Kenneally. “She had been laid-off a little while,” said Leonard Dunne, assistant to Kenneally. “She

was in the [restricted Chip overnight stakes on Nov. 6 at Aqueduct] and she got sick, and we had to scratch her. This came up a little tougher, but the plan worked out good.” Ullapool paid $5.00 to win, $3.30 to place, and $2.60 to show. Delightful Quality paid $4.00 and $3.20, while Baby J paid $3.70 to show. With the $60,000 she picked up from the Garland of Roses Stakes, Ullapool has now earned $271,911 from 13 lifetime starts. Ullapool is the daughter of Langfuhr out of Grey Traffic, by Numerous. She was bred by Peachtree Stable of Palm Beach, Fla. Assistant Dunne says that his boss was still deciding whether to bring Ullapool home to Florida or to keep scoring wins in the Empire State. “Eddie had mentioned the Florida Millions,” Dunne said. “She’s a Florida-bred, but now that she has won a stake at Aqueduct, I’ll be lobbying to keep her here, of course. She likes Belmont and trains well there. She’s happy and she’s fit, so we’ll see what the boss draws up next.

IN MEMORIAM:

Karl D. Koontz Karl D. Koontz, passed away Nov. 22, 2013, at Hospice’s Legacy House after a short illness. Born in Westminster, Md., to Garry and Marie Kauffman Koontz, Karl married Bina Carbaugh, also of Westminster, in 1952. Karl and Bina moved to Ocala in 1958 where he joined Joe O’Farrell at the newly established Ocala Stud. Soon after, Karl became the first editor and sales manager of The Florida Horse. In 1962 Karl and Bina returned to Virginia where he worked as the Sales Manager for Spur Magazine with Paul Fout.; however, the lure of the warmer climes of Ocala drew them back in 1968 where they remained. Later, Karl became the farm manager of Lin-Drake Farm. After semi-retiring, Karl joined Mike O’Farrell, Joe’s son, at Ocala Stud where he assisted in the office. A member of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association, Karl was an advocate for the Florida thoroughbred. Karl was preceded in death by his wife, Bina and his sister Dorothy Koontz Starner. Survivors include his daughter, Midge Koontz of Citra, his brother Gary Koontz, and niece Susan Starner Cooney and nephew William Starner, Jr. Donations in Karl’s memory may be made to The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, Old Friends Equine for retired thoroughbreds, or your preferred dog or horse rescue organization.

FL-bred My Sweet Dove Wires Florida-bred My Sweet Dove and hot jock Fernando De La Cruz grabbed the lead early and battled late to win the $100,000 Sandpiper Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Dec. 7. The six furlong race over the dirt for 2-year-old fillies had a field of six. Going into the race, the wagering public made the Todd Pletcher-trained Enquete the 35 favorite based on her perfect 2-for-2 record. She had broken her maiden at first asking at Saratoga in a six furlong, $78,000 special weight contest in August. After that, Enquete had won a six furlong, $43,400 allowance over

the sloppy track at Gulfstream Park on Sept. 22. Although the wagering public was convinced that the Sandpiper would be dominated by Pletcher’s filly, trainer Monte Thomas and jockey De La Cruz had other ideas. After My Sweet Dove got a good jump and found herself on the lead, jockey Willie Martinez took Enquete to the back and allowed his mount to rate the field. As they raced down the Tampa Bay Downs backstretch, De La Cruz set a hot pace for the first two furlongs as My Sweet Dove cleared the first quarter in :22.15. She was a half-length

ahead of White Pants Night, who was another half-length in front of Yes Mz Olga in third. Trainer Thomas was a little surprised that his filly was loose on the lead, setting such a sizzling pace. “That’s really not where I wanted to be, but I told [De La Cruz] if she outbroke them and that’s what they were giving him, to take it,” Thomas said. De La Cruz and My Sweet Dove found their rhythm going into the turn and they reached the quarter pole in :45.47. While My Sweet Dove was leading the pack around the

turn off the rail, favorite Enquete was starting to make her run from the back around the outside. After a half-mile, My Sweet Dove was two lengths ahead of Secret Kitten, who held third by a half-length over White Pants Night. “When we got away from the other fillies early, I was able to get her to relax,” jockey De La Cruz said. “We weren’t pressured through the turn, so I was able to save something for the stretch.” De La Cruz would need every last bit of energy during My Sweet Dove’s stretch run because Enquete came on in a fury. Although My Sweet Dove was ahead of Enquete by a full three lengths at the eighth pole, jockey Martinez urged his mount forward for a late charge to the wire. Enquete moved from the middle of the track to the rail and started to run down the leader. The Florida-bred showed her class, fending off Enquete by a half-length when she hit the wire in 1:11.42. Secret Kitten and rider Antonio Gallardo were a distant third, ten lengths behind Enquete. Scripture ‘n Verse, White Pants Night, and Yes Mz Olga completed the order of finish. Golden

Friendships was scratched. Owner and breeder Peter Lawson had full confidence that his filly was game enough to get the job done in the Sandpiper Stakes. “I am a very happy owner,” Lawson said. “I thought she had what it took to beat this field and I was actually surprised she was 51. It sounds a little cocky, but I knew she would keep going [in late stretch]. The jockey really didn’t ask her for much, so when Todd’s horse was coming, I felt she had enough to hold her at bay.” My Sweet Dove paid $13.00 to win, $3.80 to place, and $2.80 to show. Enquete paid $2.40 and $2.10, while Secret Kitten returned $2.40 to show. My Sweet Dove earned $60,000 for her victory in the Sandpiper Stakes, bringing her lifetime earnings to $92,800 from her three career starts. peed, heart, and class. Florida-bred Egg Drop had all three of these virtues when she battled back to win the $250,000, Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park on Dec 1. The 4-year-old gray or roan filly defeated a field of nine fillies and mares over mile-long turf course that was rated as “firm”. Owned by Little Red Feather Racing Stable of Woodland Hills, Ca., Egg Drop has been outstanding during her fall campaign. After winning the mile-and-a-sixteenth, Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon Handicap over the Del Mar turf on Sept. 2, she won the mile-long, Grade 2 Goldikova Stakes over the turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 3. Despite her recent performances, bettors sent the Mike Mitchell-trained filly to the gate with juicy 10-1 odds

Egg Drop for her first contest against Grade 1 company. While some horses loathe the rail, it is clear that Egg Drop relished it. After being the last to load, the Florida-bred filly broke well and went right to the front. Under jockey Martin Garcia, Egg Drop stayed two-to-three lengths ahead of Discreet Marq in second and Dayatthespa in third. The big grey filly bred by Centaur Farms of Cocoa, Fla., led the way down the backstretch and into the far turn. While it looked at points like Egg Drop might wire the field, Discreet Marq began to roll late and started to pressure her. As they came to the quarter pole, Egg Drop was still a length ahead of her rival, but the distance was closing fast. Discreet Marq was coming closer to Egg Drop with every

stride before pulling even just before the eighth pole. Discreet Marq actually pulled ahead of Egg Drop by a half-length; however, the Florida-bred filly was saving her best for last. Digging down, Egg Drop kicked into another gear after being headed by her rival. Instead of fading, she valiantly surged forward in the final strides and crossed the wire in a photo finish which revealed two grey horses separated by a scant nose, but it was Egg Drop’s nose that was in front. The daughter of Alphabet Soup out of Rehocracy, by Adhocracy, Egg Drop picked up $150,000 for her win in the Matriarch Stakes. Sold at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company for $12,000 in August 2010, Egg Drop has now earned $494,020 from 12 lifetime starts. ■

“I don’t always know how a race is going to unfold. But I know when my Florida-breds take two on Claiming Crown card

Two By BROCK SHERIDAN Hallandale Beach, Fla.— lorida-breds started off the Claiming Crown card with a bang as the trifecta for the $110,000 Iron Lady Stakes was made up entirely of horses bred in the Sunshine State headed by 30-1 longshot Carolina Lizard. Daddys Jewel was second and Courtney Dan third in the first of eight stakes on the Claiming Crown card that was held at Gulfstream Park on Nov. 7 for the second consecutive year. Carolina Lizard broke best of all from post two but Courtney Ryan wrested that lead away from her by the time they made their way into the clubhouse turn. Winiliscious, the 4-5 favorite, moved up on the outside of those two as they went the first quarter-mile in :24.21. Courtney Ryan kept a short lead down the backstretch as Carolina Lizard and Pedro Monterrey Jr. stalked her from the inside as Winiliscious tracked them while racing three-wide. After a half-mile in :48.51, Courtney Ryan maintained a half-length lead on Carolina Lizard with Winiliscous still

right there as they made their way into the second turn. Carolina Lizard began to shake loose from those two around the bend and turning for home looked to have an advantage. But Courtney Ryan came at her again from the outside. Meanwhile Daddys Jewel joined the fray from the outside as those three battled to the finish. Daddys Jewel appeared to have a head in front with less than a sixteenth-of-a-mile to go but Carolina Lizard fought back on the inside and eventually prevailed by a neck over Courtney Ryan with Daddys Jewel just a nose behind in third. The final time was 1:38.66 on a track rated as fast. Trained by Robert Posada for Mrs. J.W. Abernathy, Carolina Lizard was bred in Florida by her owner. She is a 4-year-old filly by the Journeyman Stud stallion Saint Anddan and out of the Way West mare Lizard Lick and the $60,500 first-place check increased her career earnings to $112,697. It was her fifth win from 22 lifetime starts. “I don’t always know how a race is going to unfold,” Posada said. “But I know when my horse is good. We’ve had her whole family and they’re all tough. And coming into this race, I really thought she was right. And I was a bit surprised at her odds. She has always been a very game filly. In that last race [an optional claiming victory at Calder on Nov. 9], Courtney Ryan put her head in front of this filly, but she fought back that day too. She did the same thing today when Daddys Jewel came up to her down the lane. She fights hard.” There was little doubt from the Claiming Crown punters in the six furlong Claiming Crown Express as they made Ribo Bobo the 4-5 favorite and the Florida-bred gelding did not disappoint. Ridden by Paco Lopez, Ribo Bobo broke a bit slow but went right to the lead in the $110,000 Sprint and led the field down the backstretch while racing the quartermile in :22.42 and keeping a half-length distance between himself and Bear’s Spirit in second and JB’s Unc in third. Around the far turn, Ribo Bobo began to draw clear as Lopez continued to sit comfortably and confident on the 5-year-old. As they turned for home, Ribo Bobo continued to draw off while Lopez kept him well in hand with little near to challenge. Ribo Bobo hit the wire in 1:10.02, two and one-half lengths ahead of Never Stopping in second, who was a half-length ahead of JB’s Unc in third. It was the 15th win from 48 starts for Ribo Bobo and the victory increased his earnings to $569,655. Trained by Jason Servis for Mr. Amore Stable, Ribo Bobo was

Ken and Sarah Ramsey, who won four races on the Claiming Crown card last year, returned to the Gulfstream Park winners’ circle when their Deanaallen’skitten took the $125,000 Tiara Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile and one-sixteenth on the grass over Floridabreds Rock on Baby in second and Brandys Secret in third. The Ramseys again made it a multiple-win afternoon when Major Marvel won the $125,000 Claiming Crown Emerald at a mile and one-sixteenth on the grass. The $110,000 Claiming Crown Rapid Transit Stakes for older horses going seven furlongs was taken in come from behind fashion by Goodtimehadbyall for owner High Point Thoroughbred Partners. I really wanted to win.” Servis also said that he will be looking to the Florida Sunshine Millions on Jan. 18 at Gulfstream Park for the next race for Ribo Bobo. “I think we’ve got to look at the Sunshine Millions,” Servis said. “Maybe another stakes, but I do think he’s that type of horse. gainst a star-studded field of Breeders’ Cup champions and grade 1 winners, the old Florida-bred warrior Flat Out triumphed by a length-and-a-quarter in the $753,000, Grade 1 Cigar Mile Handicap at Aqueduct on Nov. 30. The 7-year-old bay horse bred in Florida by Nikolaus Bock and trained by Bill Mott, used the change of venue and distance to his advantage. All he needed was a hot pace up front and a rider with a cool head to make it to the winner’s circle in the Cigar Mile. When the gates sprung open at the Big A, Private Zone, the winner of the Grade 1 Vosburgh Invitational, shot to the lead and began to set a sizzling pace. After a quarter-mile, Flat Out was sitting chilly back in sixth, just behind Laugh Track and Clearly Now. While the rest of the leaders jostled for position in the pack, Flat Out was free and clear, run-

ning easy while reserving his energy for when he would need it the most. Flat Out came around the far turn five-wide, leaving him in the middle of the track for his stretch run. Although he had set suicide-fractions throughout the race, Private Zone was still leading the race as they came down the stretch. Private Zone was holding off Clearly Now, Verrazano and Goldencents along the rail; however, Junior Al-

varado had finally pushed the button on Flat Out and he was flying down the center of the track. Private Zone could not out-kick the hard charging Florida-bred who finished a length-and-a-quarter ahead of the rest of the pack. Owned by Preston Stables, LLC, Flat Out is the son of Flatter out of Cresta Lil, by Cresta Rider. With the $450,000 he earned from the Cigar Mile, the Florida-bred has now earned over $3.6 million from his 29 lifetime starts. ■

Through December 9, 2013, Campbell had posted Florida-bred earnings of more than $3.4 million on the season to rank as the 10th-leading breeder in North America for the year. stakes winners, which made him the leading Florida breeder and fourth-leading North American breeder by number of stakes winners on the season at that point. Campbell’s 2013 Florida-bred earnings total was the most he has ever recorded while it was the third time he has posted his all-time high of eight Florida-bred stakes winners. The reigning princess of Campbell’s 2013 Floridabred stakes winners’ court was homebred Scandalous Act, who became only the fourth filly to sweep all three divisions of the Florida Stallion Stakes. She joined the elite company of Nancy’s Glitter (1997), Aclassysassylassy (2004) and Awesome Feather (2010) as fillies who accomplished the feat. And Scandalous Act did it in recordsetting style. She captured the Desert Vixen Stakes, Susan’s Girl Stakes and My Dear Girl Stakes by a combined winning margin total of 22 lengths. And Campbell was just one win short of making more FSS history. Homebred My Brown Eyed Guy won the 2013 Dr. Fager Stakes and Affirmed Stakes, but faltered in the In Reality Stakes of the FSS open division. Had My Brown Eyed Guy won the In Reality Stakes, Campbell would’ve become the first breeder/owner to sweep both FSS divisions in the same year. Not that Campbell is a spoiled sport. “The whole Florida Stallion Stakes series was so exciting from beginning to end,” said Campbell, who with Marilyn, his wife of 30 years, established Williston, Florida-based Stonehedge Farm South in 1988. “Scandalous Act was unbelievable and I don’t think any horse will beat her record. My Brown Eyed Guy ran well and we’re very proud of him. We expect both of them to come back strong as 3-year-olds.” Cleverly-named Scandalous Act, a 2011 bay filly by Act of Duty out of the Langfuhr mare Seductive Lady, posted four wins in five starts to bank $328,000 in 2013. My Brown Eyed Guy, a 2011 bay gelding by With Distinction out of the De Niro mare Brown Eyed Woman, scored three wins and one second to earn $161,480 on the season. Kathleen O’Connell, who became the first woman trainer to score a FSS sweep, trains the duo as well as all of the Calder-based Stonehedge Farm South stable. In addition to Scandalous Act and My Brown Eyed Guy, Florida-bred stakes winner Secret Kitten also carried the distinctive forest green and white Stonehedge Farm silks in 2013. Also aptly-named, Secret Kitten is a 2011 chestnut filly by Discreet Cat out of the Smoke Glacken mare Mossy Bank. Secret Kitten won the Cassidy Stakes and Catcharisingstar Stakes at Calder; she was

also third in the Juvenile Filly Sprint Stakes at Gulfstream Park. On the season, Secret Kitten earned $130,850. “Marilyn names our horses and she has a lot of fun doing it,” said Campbell. “She also does a great job. But I named Blue Eyed Sweetie, a stakes winner and half-sister to My Brown Eyed Guy, for Marilyn, who’s my blue-eyed sweetie. Then she named My Brown Eyed Guy after me.” Campbell’s 2013 Florida-bred stakes winners, who didn’t carry his silks, included: Onepointhreekarats (Winter Melody Stakes & Unbridled Belle Stakes); Do It for Don (Oh Say Stakes); Ondine (Beverly J. Lewis Stakes); Bolita Boyz (Juvenile Sprint Stakes) and Watch Me Go (Free Spirit Handicap). Campbell was also represented by multiple graded stakes-placed Reporting Star, as well as stakes-placed runners Union Cash and In Luv With Willie. While Campbell primarily breeds to race, he also sells bloodstock in the marketplace and privately. Onepointhreekarats, a 2008 mare by Medaglia d’Oro out of Beaties for Real, by Unreal Zeal, was sold by Campbell through Summerfield, agent, for $1.3 million at the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale. Onepointhreekarats races for Charlotte Weber’s Ocala-based Live Oak Plantation. Do It for Don was claimed in his first start for Campbell while Bolita Boyz and Ondine were sold privately. In the case of Watch Me Go, he won the 2011 Tampa Bay Derby (G2) wearing Stonehedge Farm silks before being sold privately in 2012.

STOCKING THE PORTFOLIO

Having enjoyed racing Shananie so much, Campbell decided he definitely wanted to be in the thoroughbred business on all levels. He and Marilyn established Stonehedge Farm in Tyngsboro while he began buying fillies to race with hopes of them becoming foundation broodmares. When Shananie retired, Campbell bought him outright and sent him to stand stud at a Florida farm. In a quick six years, Campbell had racehorses, broodmares and a stallion spread out from the East Coast to Kentucky to Florida. “We started thinking about buying a bigger farm where we could keep all our horses,” said Campbell. “We looked at farms in Kentucky because that’s where you were supposed to go if you wanted to be in the thoroughbred business. But we’d had a home in Boca Raton for years and enjoyed getting away to Florida in the winter. We thought a farm in Florida would be a good idea too.” As fate would have it, Campbell learned that Williston-based Waldemar Farm was for sale. This wasn’t just any old farm either. The Timothy Sams-owned Waldemar Farm had produced Florida-bred Eclipse champions Foolish Pleasure, Honest Pleasure and Tasso. The farm had also stood North American leading sire What a Pleasure. In a matter of days after first looking at the 176-acre property, the Campbells bought the farm in 1988. Shananie and a 12-member broodmare band soon arrived at what is now Stonehedge Farm South. When the Campbells bought the farm, longtime Waldemar farm manager Joe King decided it was time

to retire. His son Larry King, who had worked alongside his father since 1973, became and remains Stonehedge Farm South’s farm manager. “We felt like Florida was where we needed to be,” said Campbell. “All the pieces were in place and we were ready to go.” Shananie kickstarted Campbell’s deeper involvement in the thoroughbred industry. The 1979 chestnut horse by In Reality out of Mousam River, by Cohoes, would validate Campbell’s faith in him as a stallion. In 1989, Campbell was represented by his first homebred graded stakes winner when Florida-bred Garemma won the Sport Page Handicap (G3). By Shananie out of the Darby Creek Road mare Vincesca, Garemma was also stakes placed four times, including two graded stakesplacings, and banked career earnings of $395,583. Vincesca, the dam of Garemma, became one of Campbell’s early foundation broodmares. She also produced stakes winners Marilyn’s Madness, Shananie’s Wish, Vinnie’s Boy and Favalora, as well as stakesplaced Marilyn’s Magic. “It was very gratifying to win that first graded stakes race as a breeder and owner,” said Campbell. “This was exactly what I wanted to accomplish when I decided to become involved in the thoroughbred industry.” In nine crops, Shananie produced 14 stakes winners, seven stakes-placed runners and posted career progeny earnings of $6,555,285. Shananie died in 1992, but his legacy lived on through his stakes-producing daughters,

complishments led to Campbell being named the 1997 Florida Breeder of the Year. Marlin captured the 1997 Arlington Million Stakes (G1), San Juan Capistrano Invitational Handicap (G1), Sunset Handicap (G2) and San Luis Rey Stakes (G2). On the season, he earned $1,521,600 and retired at the end of the year with a career bankroll of $2,448,880. Marlin was named the 1997 Florida-bred champion turf horse. Blazing Sword also continued to do his breeder/owner proud, winning the 1997 Calder Derby (G3). He also posted seconds in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) and Remington Park Derby, as well as thirds in the Hollywood Derby (G1), Super Derby (G1) and Hawthorne Derby (G3). Blazing Sword raced for three more seasons, winning two more graded stakes and retired with career earnings of $1,184,055. As for Sword Dance (IRE), he also sired graded stakes winners Friel’s for Real, Dance for Thee and Ryan’s for Real. Campbell bred and raced all but Dance for Thee of that trio. Sword Dance (IRE), who died in 2010,sired an additional 21 stakes winners, 28 stakes-placers and recorded lifetime progeny earnings of $26.5 million. Campbell, who by now definitely had a penchant for buying good stallions, would follow Sword Dance (IRE) with successful stallions West Acre and Untuttable. “I’ve always looked for stallions that first of all I would breed my mares to,” said Campbell. “If you don’t support the stallions you stand, you can’t expect anyone else to support him.”

With the death of Shananie, Campbell went shopping for a new stallion for his ever-growing and consistently stakes-producing broodmare band. He found what he was looking for in Sword Dance (IRE), a graded stakes winner by Nijinsky II out of the Secretariat mare Rosa Mundi. Campbell purchased Sword Dance (IRE) privately and he stood his first year at Stonehedge Farm South in 1992. “When I look at a stallion prospect, the most important thing is that the stallion has to have a strong, blacktype-producing female family. In my opinion, that’s where your stakes winners are going to come from,” said Campbell. “Well, I didn’t think we could go wrong with a stallion by Nijinsky out of a Secretariat mare. That’s was just one of the best breeding crosses there ever was.” And as with Shananie, Campbell’s belief in Sword Dance Top Horses Bred by (IRE) was rewarded. FUTURE FACTS

With the acquisition of adjacent property, Stonehedge Farm South has grown from that initial 176 acres to 510 acres. The broodmare band, which has fluctuated over the years between 50-100, now numbers 80. “We have 57 mares due to foal in 2014,” said Stonehedge farm manager Larry King, who has lived on the property since 1973. “We have 37 yearlings and 31 2-yearolds in training on the farm. We generally send the most advanced of the 2-year-olds to Kathleen O’Connell at Calder in the spring. At the racetrack, we usually have 15-20 in training there. Year after year, we couldn’t do it without the great team we have here on the farm and the racetrack. Of course, the Campbells are the quarterbacks of our team.” When it comes to planning the matings of the farm’s mares, it’s also a team effort. “The Campbells and I get together and plan every breeding mare by mare. We use all the technology available now mixed with good ol’ horseman’s common sense,” said King. “Of course, we support our farm stallions, but we also send mares to outside stallions, too. We try to do what’s best for the mare and the farm’s program.” Current stars among the Stonehedge broodmares are stakes producers Seductive Lady, Brown Eyed Woman, and Mossy Bank, the dams of Campbell’s 2013 homebred stakes winners Scandalous Act, My Brown Eyed Guy and Secret Kitten, respectively. Campbell bought Seductive Lady, a 2001 mare by Langfuhr out of the Valid Appeal mare You’ll Be Impressed, for $33,000 at the 2002 OBS August select yearling sale. On the racetrack, she won two races and earned $36,260. But her broodmare career is yielding much more success. In addition to Scandalous Act, she has also produced Florida-bred stakes winner Two T’s At Two B. Seductive Lady produced a 2012 West Acre colt, a 2013 Factum filly and is in foal for 2014 to Big Bad Barnie. Also bought as yearling for $40,000 by Campbell, Brown Eyed Woman was a stakes-placed winner of $57,650. As a broodmare, the 1997 mare by De Niro out of Marilyn’s Magic, by Shananie, has been a keeper. Not only has she produced My Brown Eyed Guy, but she is also the dam of stakes winner Blue Eyed Sweetie, as well as stakes-placed Domenick’s Done and Brown Eyed Sue. Brown Eyed Woman has a 2012 West Acre filly and is in foal for 2014 to Any Given Saturday.

Mossy Bank, a 2005 mare by Smoke Glacken out of the Greinton mare Greening, was purchased by Campbell for $50,000 at the 2009 Keeneland November mixed sale. She was in foal to Aragorn (IRE) at the time. The dam of Secret Kitten has a 2012 West Acre colt, a 2013 With Distinction filly and is in foal for 2014 to With Distinction. The Stonehedge Farm South stallion roster currently consists of Factum, Revolving and Big Bad Barnie. Revolving, a 2009 chestnut horse by A.P. Indy out of Circle of Life, by Belong to Me, entered stud in 2013 and will have his first crop in 2014. Big Bad Barnie, a 2009 bay horse by Trippi out of the Deputy Minister mare Barnie Fife, enters stud in 2014. Factum, a 2008 bay horse by Storm Cat out of the Rubiano mare Starry Dreamer, entered stud in 2012 and his first crop will be 2-year-olds of 2014. Factum is a half-brother to graded stakes winners War Front, Teammate and Ecclesiastic. “I loved the breeding on Factum and thought he had every right to be a good sire,” said Campbell. “We bred about a dozen of our mares to him that first year and his first crop has been outstanding. In fact, the word we use is ‘Wow!’ We were so pleased with those first babies that we sent 20 of our mares to him in 2013 and have 40 lined up for 2014.” Campbell, who served three terms as president on the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ board of directors, hasn’t lost his enthusiasm for the sport he became involved in three decades ago. “We still love going to the races,” said Campbell. “And we’re always excited to see each year’s new crop of babies. Every year the farm crew tells me that this one is the best crop we’ve had yet. How can you not be excited about that?” ■

By Intentionally out of Aspidistra, by Better Self, 3-yearold Ta Wee posted eight stakes wins in 10 seasonal starts. The Tartan Farms homebred filly, trained by Flint “Scotty” Schulhofer, won the Jasmine Stakes (2nd Division), Prioress Stakes, Comely Stakes, Miss Woodford Stakes, Test Stakes, Fall Highweight Handicap, Interborough Stakes and Vosburgh Handicap. Unbeaten at six furlongs, she earned $170,663 on the season. In the Fall Highweight Handicap at Belmont Park, Ta Wee carried 130 pounds to a length victory and covered the six furlongs in 1:101⁄5. In the Miss Woodford Stakes, she blazed through three-quarters in 1:083⁄5. Going seven furlongs in the Vosburgh Handicap at Aqueduct, she clocked a winning time of 1:213⁄5. At the end of the season, Ta Wee (which is Sioux for “beautiful girl”) made it three times in-a-row that a Floridabred was named champion sprinter. Process Shot and Faneuil Hall also fared well in the 3-yearold filly ranks for the Sunshine State. Process Shot (Restless Wind – Possessed, by Determined) encored her outstanding juvenile season with an equally impressive sophomore one. Florida-bred Ta Wee after the 1969 She won the Flirtation Stakes, Betsy Ross Handicap, BlackComely Stakes Eyed Susan Stakes and the Bryn Mawr Stakes to earn $97,312.

Faneuil Hall, a Bolina Boy filly bred by Farnsworth Farms, captured the Cinderella Stakes, Seashore Stakes and Princess Doreen Handicap to bank $72,164. The 3-year-old Florida-bred colts made headlines of their own. Top Knight, the previous year’s champion 2-year-old colt, was again in the news. He defeated Arts and Letters in both the Flamingo Stakes and Florida Derby. He would go on to finish fourth to Majestic Prince in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. On the season, the Vertex colt earned $194,854. Fast Hilarious (Hilarious – Fast Cookie, by Beau Gar) was the leading money-earner among the Florida-bred sophomore colts. With wins in the Hibiscus Stakes, Marshall Field Memorial Stakes, Curtains Up Handicap, Arlington Park Towers Handicap, American Derby Handicap and City of Coral Cables Handicap, he tallied a bankroll of $212,865. Other outstanding colts included Night Invader ($144,347), Red Reality ($99,038) and Noholme Jr. ($94,100). In the juvenile ranks, High Echelon (Native Charger – Luquillo, by Princequillo) won the Futurity Stakes and the Pimlico-Laurel Futurity on his way to earning $240,100. Clover Lane (Tudor Way – Grass Shack, by Polynesian) won the Mademoiselle Stakes, Lassie Trial Stakes and ArlingtonWashington Lassie Stakes to earn $113,250. Office Queen, a daughter of Fair Ruler bred by Ocala Stud and owned by Steven Calder, won the Mermaid Stakes and earned $71,934. *Noholme II, who stood at Robin’s Nest Farm, was Florida’s leading sire and ranked third nationally with progeny earnings of $957,768. Intentional was ranked 10th nationally with progeny earnings of $789,627. Stallions standing their first year at stud in Florida included Dr. Fager, In Reality, What a Pleasure and Diplomat Way. Harbor View Farm repeated as Florida’s leading breeder and placed fourth nationally with a total of $1,062,789. Hobeau Farm was the state’s leading owner and third nationally with earnings of $1,038,294. Bzz-Bzz, a filly by Mr. Brick out of Call Anytime, by Royal Note, won the first Florida Stallion Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Diane Crump became the first female jockey to ride and win a race in Florida. The Florida Legislature approved the Calder Bill, opening the door for summer racing in South Florida. Steven Calder immediately announced plans for the construction of an $8-million facility in Dade County. ■

n some big racing days you can find Carlo Vaccarezza and his family in an owner’s box at Churchill Downs, Santa Anita Park or Gulfstream Park cheering on their homebred turf star Little Mike. On many other days you can find him near the rail at Gulfstream. As a mentor to enthusiastic co-owners who are watching a 2011-born Florida-bred that they hope just might become a future Little Mike. Those co-owners, some with their first investment in a thoroughbred, are minority partners in horses owned by Little Dreams Racing LLC of which Vaccarezza is co-founder and managing partner. Little Dreams is one of the so-called “affordable racing partnerships” that have been formed around the country in recent years. Vaccarezza, 2012 Eclipse Award winning trainer Dale Romans and veteran owner John Williams, launched Little Dreams in Carlo Vaccarezza the spring of 2013. A minority owner can invest as little as 1 percent of the purchase price in a Little Dreams horse. All are 2year-olds or yearlings that Romans and Vaccarezza buy at major sales. Many of Little Dreams’ owners had considered investing in other partnerships but found the minimum purchase percentages and prices to be too high, Vaccarezza said. “We are doing something for the regular guy who

might have between maybe $20,000 to $50,000 to invest and wants to diversify in several horses,” he said. Spreading investment dollars among horses is a sound tactic because only a small percent of thoroughbreds earn a profit during their racing careers. That can be balanced out because several tax benefits are available to investors in racehorses. A Google search of “horse racing affordable partnerships” brings up more than a dozen names of partnerships or syndicates where ownership stakes can be 10 percent or less. Little Dreams Racing and Pinnacle Racing Stables, both stabled at Gulfstream, are two of the most prominent partly because of Breeders’ Cup connections. The Florida-bred Little Mike won the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Turf (Grade 1). Priscilla Vaccarezza, Carlo’s wife, owns Little Mike separately from Little Dreams Racing. Pinnacle was co-owner of the now-retired Musical Romance, the Florida-bred winner of the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) and was also that year’s Eclipse Award winner as the Champion Female Sprinter. The minimum investment in a Pinnacle horse is generally 3 percent of the purchase price, usually for 2-year-olds. Trainer Bill Kaplan picks out Pinnacle’s horses and usually makes purchases at sales in Ocala. He was the co-owner of Musical Romance and several other horses he trains for Pinnacle.

Most of his acquisitions are 2-year-olds at prices usually in the $25,000 to $30,000 range. LITTLE DREAMS RACING

Little Dreams began buying 2-year-olds last May. It has purchased 10 horses including five Florida-breds. Purchase prices have ranged from $70,000 to $340,000. Little Dreams retains ownership of at least 20 percent of each horse. As of mid-December, shares were still available in several horses. All of the horses are named after family and friends of the three founding partners. In many other partnerships, a minority owner will put money into a fund set up to buy a horse at a sale and become an owner of whatever horse the managing partner and his advisors buy. “At Little Dreams, Dale and I pick out and buy the horses with our money and then you get to come to the barn and see a horse before you put in money,” Vaccarezza said. “People like that,” added Vaccarezza, who lives in Broward County and is co-owner of Frank & Dino’s Restaurant in Deerfield Beach. Many of the owners of Little Dreams’ Florida-breds live in Florida. Reinaldo Gonzalez, who lives in Broward County, is a first-time owner. He has small stakes in Little Rocco, Little Daniella and Little Alexis and tries to get to Gulfstream for all of their races. Gonzalez learned about Little Dreams last spring when he found its web site while searching the Internet for low-cost ways to invest in quality horses, As of Dec. 11, the Little Dreams horses remained winless after several months of races at New York tracks and at Gulfstream. “We are hoping a win will come soon at Gulfstream, but we are realistic because we are facing some of the top outfits,” Vaccarezza said. “I think we will do well at Gulfstream’s next summer meet.’ Details on the expenses and other operations of Little Dreams and other partnerships can be found on their web sites.

our the home of Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association new president George Russell Sr. and his wife Karen, and one room will help you understand their relationship as husband and wife and as owners of Rustlewood Farm located in Ocala, Fla. Just off of the entryway is the home office with the walls filled with plaques and mementos earned by some of their Florida-bred stakes winners, George as the owner of Russell Engineering and as chairman and three-time board member of the Florida Transportation Builders Association; and various photos of politicians with which the two have known and worked. But the large desk set in the middle of the office perhaps best defines the Russells. It is a two-person desk with each large chair facing the other across the large workspace. “Don’t be fooled by that desk,” George said. “Karen runs the show.” Karen will say the same about George but spend any amount of time with the couple and it quickly becomes obvious that they are equal partners in nearly all of their ventures. That story goes back to 1968 when Karen was in the ninth grade and George a junior at Miami Central High School. While they attended the same school, they met at Westview Baptist Church in Miami and have not been apart since. Sometime later, George, like many high school boys, became interested in cars, especially drag racing. And Karen was right there by his side at the track and in the garage.

“I got involved with drag racing as a kid with a friend of mine,” George said. “We had a racetrack out in the Florida Everglades back in those days called Hollywood Speedway Park. Our first real race car, I mean strictly a race car and not street legal, was a ’57 Chevy. We got started there and just encountered a lot of people and made a lot of friends. “But I enjoyed it. I enjoyed driving and I liked the mechanical part. When we were kids, we could buy a car, pull the engine, rebuild it and put it back in about eight hours. Karen would be there. She would be inside the car and we’d tell her to tap it [start it] when we’d be setting the lifters or something like that. She would be the first one to crank the engine of our cars many times.” George eventually became rather prolific with the mechanics of a drag racing car but also honed his skills as a driver. “Everybody wanted George to drive their car,” Karen said. “Because he could shave time off. He just had a knack for driving a race car.” George also raced boats with his brothers, many times racing the courses behind the famous Carribbean Club in Key Largo, Fla. “These were just little V-hull boats with big engines,” George said. “That was more dangerous than the cars no doubt. [You could hit] waves and wakes from other boats. You just never knew what would happen.” George says that they didn’t make any money with their racing endeavors but did take home a lot of tro-

phies. Trophies that he has since given away, said Karen. “We were just local boys playing at our own level,” George said. Eventually other things began to take over in the Russell’s life and they quit racing cars. The two married in 1971 while George was working with his father, George E. Russell Jr., who had a tree and landscaping business in Miami. While subcontracting many road construction sites, George began to think he could begin a business in that industry and in 1982, started Russell Engineering, Inc. a road construction company with an additional office in Ft. Lauderdale. Today Russell Engineering has an office in Bradenton, Fla., and today is a leader in Florida highway construction and bridges. While building and growing Russell Engineering, George and Karen had finished their racing career and had no aspiration to return to drag cars or boats. “We had a few tough years no doubt,” George said. “But we survived it. We were determined and just grew a little at a time and eventually became successful.” Once the business became a success, the Russells began looking for a place to “get away.” With family in Ocala, George and Karen would occasionally go to Marion County to

visit and eventually decided to buy a second home in Ocala. Although they were not looking for a horse farm, they eventually settled on purchasing what was then Daisy Ron Farm, a 117-acre thoroughbred farm north of Ocala and renamed it Rustlewood Farm. “We didn’t intend to buy a horse farm,” Karen said. “But when we did, we decided ‘why not buy some horses?” They retained the services of Curtis Weller as their farm manager and met the legendary breeder Elmer Heubeck, who was a neighbor at that time. Heubeck offered them four yearlings for $20,000 and the Russells suddenly found themselves back in the racing game. But this time it was not horse power they were dealing with but real horses. “At the time, we didn’t know anything about horses,” George said. “My brother-in-law and I would go to Calder occasionally and I had ridden quarter horses as a kid, but that was it. But we brought them [to Rustlewood] and we just watched and learned what we could from Curtis. “When it came time to break them, Curtis introduced us to Marty Hershe. A great guy who we had a lot of fun with. So Marty broke and trained all four of them and all four turned out to be winners.” One of those yearlings was All Considered, a filly by Peace Corps out of Lanie, by Red Gar. All Considered went on to become a stakes winner after taking the 1989 I Guarantee It Stakes at Gulfstream Park. “The race was worth only $50,000, but you would have thought it was worth $5 million,” Karen said. After her race career, All Considered was brought home to Rustlewood where she became a broodmare for the Russells, eventually producing 13 foals, nine of which were winners including stakes winner Consider Thesource and stakes-placed All Milady. Consider Thesource won the My Dear Girl division of the 2005 Florida Stallion Stakes at Calder. All Considered recently died after being retired for many years at Rustlewood. Consider Thesource and All Milady also became a broodmare for the Russells. Today the Russells have 52 thoroughbreds at Rustlewood where they sell most of their young horses commercially. Others they keep to race with a “sell the best and keep the rest” business plan. They also bred and own Mach Ride who raced for the Russells and now stands at Bridlewood Farm in Ocala. Mach Ride won his first four races and was then second in the Grade 2 Carry Back Stakes at Calder in 2006. His next start would be in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes at Saratoga. But he stumbled badly at the start and had a second rally stopped when forced to check coming out of the turn but still finished fourth. He also

Unordinary “ ” 10 With Tom Ventura / President Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company

Name: Tom Ventura

Title: President

Organization: Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company

Previous Position: General Manager, Kinsman Farm

Education: University of Arizona

Place of Birth: Hackensack, NJ

Family: Wife – Jackie, Sons – James and Jeremy

56 THE FLORIDA HORSE • JANUARY 2014

In a nutshell, describe your organization & your responsibilities: Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company was founded in 1975 by a group of horsemen to provide a viable option to market local horses. OBS founders pioneered the 2-year-old in training sale concept to help market horses with moderate pedigrees by allowing potential purchasers the opportunity to view the horses on the racetrack. Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company consists of a Sales Division, a Feed Division, Inter-Track Wagering, Ocala Jai- Alai, and owns a quarter horse Permit. In 2013, the Sales Division accounted for over $100 million in sales with solid increases for each sale as it continues to rebound from the 2008 financial downturn. OBS holds six sales during the year: Mixed sales in January and October, a Yearling sale in August, and 2-Year-Old sales in March, April, and June. OBS is the leader in the 2-year-old market with more than 60% of the North American juvenile sales. OBS includes a sales and training facility encompassing over 200 acres with 1,200 stalls, a one-mile oval with a Safetrack all-weather surface and a three furlong dirt training track. The Feed Division operates a feed mill that manufactures a line

of high performance equine feed. A large selection of grains, hay and specialty feeds complement the manufactured feed as well as tack, equipment and animal health supplies. In addition to an extensive local delivery network, the Feed Division has two retail outlets to serve the Ocala area. Simulcast wagering on thoroughbred, harness, and greyhound racing throughout the nation is available at the OBS Inter-Track Wagering facility. Wagering at OBS ITW annually generates over $1 million dollars for thoroughbred purses and breeders’ awards for Florida breeders and owners. The OBS Championship Stakes restricted to OBS Sales Graduates is entering its 25th year and will be held on January 21, 2014, with $300,000 in purses. Ocala Jai-Alai is currently leased to a third party and includes a poker room in addition to the availability of simulcast wagering. How did you get involved in the thoroughbred industry? My interest in thoroughbreds began as a fan by attending the races as a teenager at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, Saratoga and Monmouth Park with my father, brother and uncles. The incomparable Secretariat was the first of three Triple Crown winners in the

1970’s followed by Seattle Slew and Affirmed. Other superstars racing during that period included the ill-fated Ruffian, arguably the best filly to ever set foot on a racetrack; Spectacular Bid, who nearly became the fourth Triple Crown winner of the decade and ended his career with a rare walkover in the Woodward; and the mighty Forego with his breathtaking and powerful come-from-behind victories while carrying weight that will never be seen again. After spending a year as an engineering student at Rutgers University, I transferred to the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program to further explore my interest in horses and the thoroughbred business. After an internship with the Jockey Club and NYRA prior to graduation, I returned to NYRA as a member of the racing office. Since horse racing was in my blood but not my bloodlines, the University of Arizona opened some doors in a rather closed industry. What specifically got you involved in the Florida thoroughbred industry? In 1981, I was presented an opportunity to work for the Steinbrenner family’s Kinsman Farm in Tampa. In addition to the racing stable that was expanding with horses

Questions_Ventura_USE_Florida Horse_template 12/18/13 3:56 PM Page 57

questions to a variety of Florida thoroughbred industry personalities

Questions on both coasts and the breeding and sales based in Ocala, the Steinbrenner family owned 50% of Tampa Bay Downs, which allowed me to gain exposure in various aspects of the industry. I worked side by side with Hank Steinbrenner and not only furthered my knowledge and broadened my experience, but forged a lifelong friendship with him and his family that remains special to this day. What are your favorite sports (outside of horse racing)? I was born and raised a New York Yankees fan and it has nothing to do with my relationship with the Steinbrenner family. The Yankees have a long, great history and many enjoy rooting against them. However, my allegiance cannot be questioned as I suffered through some of their dismal years when I was growing up before they turned around under the Steinbrenner regime. Ruth, Gehrig, and Mantle are the baseball equivalent to Man O’ War, Citation, and Secretariat.

ELEANOR HANCOCK PHOTO

What is one of your more fond memories to date in the Florida thoroughbred industry? While the fact that Affirmed was a Florida-bred did not factor into my passionate support of him, his rivalry with Alydar became the thoroughbred version of Ali-Frazier. The Belmont Stakes was as thrilling a race I ever witnessed in person with the young Steve Cauthen

squeezing every last inch out of Affirmed after a 1 ½ mile duel. His next race was equally impressive as he looked hopelessly beaten a furlong out in the Jim Dandy before catching Sensitive Prince in the shadow of the wire with a furious finish. Ocala Stud being honored by TOBA as the 2012 National Breeder of the Year is an award that is well deserved and gratifies me on both a personal and professional level. The O’Farrell family has survived and thrived through some trying times with a long and storied history in the Florida thoroughbred

industry and has been instrumental to the success of OBS since its inception. What are your favorite songs or musical artists? I am an old Rock ‘n’ Roller at heart – The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and the Grateful Dead. My age is starting to show as I now listen to more talk and sports radio. What are your favorite movies or television shows? My favorite part of watching television is fast forwarding between commercials. I enjoy shows that do not require concentration. The Honeymooners is

still a “go-to” show for me with Ralph Kramden providing life’s lessons and humor that has stood the test of time. Favorite “reads”? Most of my reading involves some aspect of the horse business, so my leisurely reading is very limited. Favorite food(s)? Not being politically correct as confirmed by my growing waistline: Anything my wife makes, my mother’s Italian specialties, and my brother’s grilled chicken. Why do you think people should breed, own and race Florida-breds? In my opinion, Florida is the best place to raise a horse. The conditions and pool of talent are second to none. Over the years, Florida-breds have consistently outperformed their pedigrees and win at the highest level of our sport. The more time a horse can spend in Florida, the more time it has to flourish especially during the winter months which can be harsh in other regions. I believe this also applies while the horses are in utero so breeding and foaling in Florida is an advantage. Regarding racing in Florida, purses remain the driving force and I am hopeful that the future is bright for stable (pun intended) racing dates and positive legislative in support of an industry critical to Florida. ■ THE FLORIDA HORSE • JANUARY 2014 57

he Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association supplements annually the stakes schedules at each of the Florida race tracks in an effort to further promote the Florida thoroughbred. The Florida Sire Stakes Program is part of this overall promotion. The Sire Stakes program is open to horses registered with the FTBOA and by Florida stallions registered with the FTBOA who have met all eligibility requirements and made all required payments. The program consists of more than $2.2 million in purse awards supplemented by FTBOA for two-year old and three-year old races and includes the lucrative Florida SIRE Stakes – a six race series for two-year olds. In 2013, the program represents $640,000 in purses at Gulfstream Park and $150,000 at Tampa Bay Downs. In 2012, it represented the $1 million Florida Stallion Stakes and $430,000 in purses at Calder Race Course. The $1 million Florida Sire Stakes consists of six 2-year-old races for Florida-bred colts and fillies. The races are: two 6 furlong races, two 7 furlong races, and two races at 1 1/16th.

32 YEARS OF THE FLORIDA STALLION STAKES

Jackson Bend

LISA PHOTO

In its 32 years, the Florida Stallion Stakes hosted 1,532 total individual runners in 220 races and awarded over $38.9 million. Florida-breds won 217 of the races. Just like other racing triples, the Florida Stallion Stakes three race sweep is a difficult feat. In its 32 year history, only 12 horses have won all three, while 37 horses won two of three.

Making the Journey Together

wanted to bring Act Cool back. It was not an ideal time for Williams to take on another horse but Cool would always have a home at Half Track Farm. Cool had been gone a long time, he was now 9years-old with an upside down, pencil neck, huge flat feet, and had been living out most of his time outside. He moved back easily enough, with only one incident as he bolted out of the halter, leaving Williams with a huge black eye. A few days later Williams took the plunge and got on him. She later found out he had not been ridden in four years. It could have been a train wreck but Cool lived up to his name and gave little protest. Roles were also reversed, as Cool was now 100% sound and post-surgery but Williams was lame and still nursing her new knee. Day after day, the pair worked together to achieve a partnership, get stronger and push themselves back into shape. They became a team. Not only did Cool help rehabilitate Williams, but he was showing a lot of promise for dressage! The journey into the world of dressage was a slow one, rebuilding muscle memory and balance. They worked diligently and a year later they were ready to go into the ring. The hard work paid off and they earned Reserve Champion Adult Amateur Champion in their first show. Champion or reserve would be their title in every subsequent show. “He is an absolute pleasure to own, he brought back the joy of riding and we have forged a forever bond” says Williams. ■ Noactor – sire of Act Cool

Florida Thoroughbred Act Cool out of Noactor makes successful change to dressage

By SALLY MOEHRING eb Williams is a former hunter rider that changed disciplines to dressage after knee replacement surgery on her right knee. Her personal horses, however, were hunters and not suitable for serious dressage work. Then along came Cool, Jockey Club registered as Act Cool, a chestnut colt by Randy Mills’ Noactor out of Conference Champ, by Expoldent. The 3-year-old Florida-bred would be the first of many rehabilitation projects that Williams would take on. The fancy mover was friendly, he was pretty, but he had obstacles to overcome. Williams had bought the good looking horse knowing he had an issue in his left knee. Although the colt had been in training and made the haul down south to the racetrack, his unsoundness had prevented him from racing. First things first, he was gelded and then put on stall rest, but after several weeks he still had head-bobbing pain. X-rays of the left knee revealed multiple bone chips and after further consultation surgery was suggested. Although the chips were successfully removed, the prognosis was grim and Cool would probably never be sound enough to ride. Ever the optimist, his owner made a post-operative plan, to give Cool the best chance to succeed. He was put back on stall rest for the required six weeks while his owner waited patiently for his recovery. Many more weeks went by and the surgeon’s prediction seemed to be correct. Now about 90% sound after three months, the decision was made to put him up for adoption for a companion horse or for light trail riding. Potential adopters came and tried him several times. One couple, satisfied that he would fit the bill as a trail horse offered him a home. Good reports came in from Cool’s new home, he continued doing well and was sound. In 2010, five years after Cool’s adoption, the couple

FARM MANAGEMENT

2013 Year End Thoughts Start of 2014

H

ello to all! As I write this article I’m shocked to realize one year has ended and another has begun. Lots happened in 2013, setting up 2014 to be busy, but hopefully positive and productive for the industry. Let’s review topics covered to start a good frame-work for the New Year. Bedding alternatives have been discussed which are good for the horse, environment and pocketbook. Cardboard, although not the prettiest, is one such bedding; it can save money, decreases dust in stalls and also decrease the farm’s carbon footprint. Made from corrugated cardboard chips, done by shredding large sheets coming from cardboard manufacturers, it’s often surplus cardboard stock. Reported to be five to six times more absorbent than wood or straw bedding, it’s comfortable for the animal, especially with allergies, composts beautifully and is a fairly inexpensive bedding choice. The food and fiber plant called Kenaf is another possible bedding alternative. A relative of cotton and okra, it shows promise for its absorptive capacities and cushioning capabilities for sore-footed horses. Foundered horses seem to lie Hopefully, this refresher course down longer in stalls bedded on Kenaf. It is extremely abgives ideas about legislation, sorbent and acts like cat litcomposting, bedding types and ter, making clean-up of the other subjects that can keep your wet areas easier, leading to farm ahead of the curve and be less product loss (saving money). Other benefits with managed more effectively. Kenaf bedding are the low dust content, being lighter than traditional bedding and in its ability to compost and break down nicely. But, what is to be done with any of the stall waste/used bedding? Composting is always something promoted for waste reduction, improved soil health, weed seed reduction, etc. Like all things, unfortunately, it has positives and negatives. Farms composting manure should keep records on any herbicides used in the pastures because certain types remain active in fully composted material. For example, any grower of potatoes, tomatoes or other broadleaf crops can be negatively affected using compost coming from a farm using the broadleaf herbicide containing pyridine carboxylic acids, like GrazonNext and PastureGard HL. Careful record-keeping can eliminate confusion for growers who use this compost. 74 THE FLORIDA HORSE • JANUARY 2014

Composting is a BMP that’s heavily promoted, especially for areas in Florida that have Basin Management Action Plans, or BMAP legislation. A BMAP, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, “is a “blueprint” for restoring impaired waters by reducing pollutant loadings to meet the allowable loadings established in a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL). It represents a comprehensive set of strategies designed to implement pollutant reductions.” That means that nutrients, found in manures and also found to be in excess in many of Florida’s waterways, can be harmful to fish and wildlife and potentially make the water undrinkable for humans and animals. As a result, the FDEP, other government agencies and several stakeholders have come together to go through the largely public process of establishing BMAPs in an effort to reduce nutrient loads to help protect those water bodies. The link below specifically discusses FDEP BMAPs. Rainbow Springs and Silver Springs (both in Marion County) are each currently going through the process of having BMAPS developed and adopted. It’s a slow process, meant to try and get many sides of the story. Determinations of activities taking place in an area are made so that efforts can then be put forth to establish reduction of the nutrient loads. Once adopted, the BMPs in the Equine BMP Manual (developed by FDACS-Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services) are enforceable and NO LONGER VOLUNTARY. FDEP BMAPs can be found at dep.state.fl.us/water/watersheds/bmap.htm. Hopefully, this refresher course gives ideas about legislation, composting, bedding types and other subjects that can keep your farm ahead of the curve and be managed more effectively. Please don’t hesitate to contact me regarding these, or any other topics. To schedule a FREE, non-regulatory farm visit, please contact me or your local Extension agent. As always, keep up the good management practices! ■ Jamie A. Cohen • 352-671-8792 Farm Outreach Coordinator UF IFAS/Marion County Extension Service • jamiecohen@ufl.edu

FLORIDA HORSE PARK

H

We look forward to the grand opening of our new arena this spring, the possibly new barn construction, and even more exciting events!

appy New Year! Such a simple phrase, but one that causes each of us to pause for a moment, to consider not only what we accomplished during this past year, but what we hope to achieve in the next. This reflection brings to mind the spirit of the horse. In mythology, the horse symbolizes drive, passion and an appetite for freedom. Among all the spirit animals, it embodies the spirit of strong motivation that carries one through life. We are reminded that the Florida Agricultural Center and Horse Park, not unlike the spirit of the horse, is the product of our collective drive, passion, and strong motivation to build the Park into a showcase for our community; that we have found much success in 2013, despite past challenges. We are proud of our accomplishments in 2013 and thankful for your generous support. We believe this year will be remembered as the one where the Park firmly established a new beginning – one where we set the stage for future success. This was only possible because of the strong motivation and selfless contributions of many. First and foremost, our heartfelt thanks to past Chairwomen of the Foundation and the Park, Connie Duff Wise and Nan Bonfield, respectively. Their tireless leadership and hard work served to move the Park forward to enjoy its new found success. Welcome to our new Board Chairs! Jim Payton was selected as the Chairman for the Park following Nan Bonfield’s resignation. We look forward to much success in 2014 under this new leadership! Our sincere thanks to Commissioner Adam Putnam for his leadership and the generous support by his staff. This support helped to make the Park even more successful! In particular, the Commissioner made several important new appointments to the Park Board in December of 2013. Welcome new Park Board members! ■ Dr. Carol K. Clark, DVM, Peterson & Smith Equine Hospital; ■ Joseph M. O’Farrell, III, Ocala Stud Farms, LLP; ■ Becky Schatt, Schatt Realty; ■ Randy Coates, Chief Operating Officer, Central Maintenance and Welding; and,

■ Ellen Witterstaeter, Chief Executive Officer, HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Ocala. And, none of this would be possible without the tireless efforts of both the Park and Foundation Boards. Thank you all! It is not always an easy task, but your diligence and hard work are appreciated. In 2013, we received a record breaking $2 million from the state providing the Park with a much needed infusion of funds. This money enables us to begin the build out of the long term vision of the Park as a focal point for tourism in the region. Although most of this year’s money will be used to build a covered arena and even more will be needed to fulfill our long term vision, private efforts are already underway to fund barns, to upgrade outdoor arenas, and to provide critical equipment to maintain the grounds. We are excited by this renewed commitment by the Ocala-Marion county citizens and business community. Similarly, our thanks to the City of Ocala and Marion County who have supported the Park by building turn lanes at the Park entrance and by ensuring a prompt approval of construction permits. We look forward to the grand opening of our new arena this spring, the possibly new barn construction, and even more exciting events! Our busy, fun filled January calendar of events includes: ■ Jan. 3 – 5: Southeastern Distance Trail Riders Association Trail Ride ■ Jan. 11-12: Equiventures Horse Trials ■ Jan. 15: POP XC Schooling ■ Jan. 18: Sunshine State Jack Russell Terrier Trials ■ Jan. 18 – 19: SOCA Obstacle Challenge ■ Jan. 25 – 26: Central Florida Regional SCCA Rallycross ■ Jan. 30 – Feb. 2: Sunshine State Combined Driving Events Happy New Year and May the Horse be With You!, Anne Rathbun Favre / Executive Director Foundation for the Florida Horse Park Foundation@FLHorsepark.com

W R I T E S OF DEROSA

Take‘em Again! W by Ed DeRosa

Director of marketing for Brisnet.com, the official data source of the Kentucky Derby and TwinSpires.com. Ed joined Brisnet.com in July 2011 following nine years as a writer and editor with Thoroughbred Times. He grew up in Cleveland and learned to love horse racing while going to Thistledown with his grandfather. Ed is a diehard Indians fan, leaving him to wonder which--if either--will come first: A Triple Crown winner or an Indians world championship. Ed's favorite horses are Real Quiet, Ghostzapper, and Rachel Alexandra.

hat’s even more important to racing’s sur- likely winner, so you have a good chance to cash.” ■ Having ownership of a bet makes it that much vival than taking someone to the track for more exciting when it hits. A person is far more likely the first time? Taking them again. In 2013, racing did a good job raising the profile to bet again (and tell people about the experience) of how much fun a day at the races is. Among The after cashing his/her own ticket than if they had just Jockey Club’s America’s Best Racing initiative, given me money to bet. ■ Watch the races from the areas where the crowd Saratoga Race Course’s 150th anniversary celebration, and existing marketing efforts at prestigious race is loudest. Depending on the track, this might entail meetings such as the Kentucky Derby presented by watching some races on TV in the grandstand rather Yum! Brands, Breeders’ Cup World Championships, than live on the track. Beulah, Turfway, or MounKeeneland Race Course, Gulfstream Park and Del taineer in the dead of winter, for example, might have Mar Thoroughbred Club, the racing industry and its more people huddled around the TVs near the bar stakeholders did their part to give people a reason to than watching on the track. The excitement of cheering a horse home (even if you’re all cheering different go to the track. So if 2013 was the year of taking them there, then horses) is contagious, so make sure you hang out where the action is. let’s make 2014 the year of bringing them back. ■ See the horses and jockeys before AND after the People in the racing and breeding industries—myrace. Going to the paddock is a no self included—often say that we do what we do so fervently and with such So if 2013 was the brainer, but watching the horses and jockeys come off the track can be passion because racing is “in our just as exciting for new fans who blood.” That’s very much true but not year of taking them because we were born into it but be- there, then let’s make may not have realized how much energy horses and riders expend cause someone put it there, and one 2014 the year of during a 1-2-minute race. Veins visit is rarely a strong enough dose. I didn’t become a lifelong fan of bringing them back. popping and jockeys panting is a great way to show the Sport of racing because my grandfather took me to the track that one time. It happened because he Kings is no walk in the park. Fire up TwinSpires.com mobile when you’re at a took me many times, and while getting someone to the track is an important first step, it’s with each sub- bar with friends. OK, that’s a plug since I work for TwinSpires, but sequent visit that racing benefits. Here are some guidelines I try to follow when any ADW will do, and because of geography or timing, not everyone can bring friends to the track, so bringing new or inexperienced people to the races: ■ Encourage them to make their own selections, why not bring the excitement of gambling on horses but don’t pressure them into feeling they have to to them? Being at the bar for Monday Night Football handicap the race. If your kid or buddy wants to play and playing numbers at Mountaineer is a great way his birthday or her favorite name then that’s okay. If to introduce people to racing as well as how safe, he/she asks what you think of the horse, then even if legal, and easy it is to bet it online. A colleague who works for a competitor comyou hate its chances, come up with a reason for them to stick with their selection. For example, if it’s an im- mented to me that racing does too much to attract possible longshot “I wouldn’t talk anyone off a horse people who aren’t fans, anyway, and not enough to at that price” or “you’ll get paid if you win” works; if keep the fans we have. If people aren’t staying, then it’s a favorite you don’t like, “You’re on the most it’s up to us to bring them back. ■
