Fisher Today IN THIS ISSUE As we welcome the class of 2016 a new level of energy, promise, and enthusiasm surrounds Fisher College and its campus extensions, beginning with move-in day.

The summer was productive as we received approval for a fifth baccalaureate degree in Criminal Justice, adding to our increasing portfolio of strong programs that represent additional opportunity for bachelor’s degree-seeking students, and an entirely new level of preparedness for graduate studies and entry into the workforce. This is reflected by an expanding freshman class; the campus will welcome a record number of new students in the fall (approximately 350).

Coupled with 468 returners, the Day Division population is exceeding 800.

From an improved roof deck to the addition of the Falcon’s Nest Café, upgrades have been completed in all of the buildings, including New Bedford and North Attleborough. Even our landscaping has been appreciated by neighbors, including the Mayor’s office. I am very proud of the improvements we have made at all of our properties, and am grateful to the people who have worked very hard to make this possible. We hope you can see this for yourselves on October 12-14, 2012 during Alumni and Family Weekend, which includes the annual Athletics Hall of Fame event.

These improvements are consistent with our 2012-2016 Strategic Plan, thoughtfully prepared with input from all stakeholders — students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

The College will continue to provide an unforgettable student experience through enhancements and upgrades of programs, and facilities. The Strategic Plan is, indeed, a living document serving as a guide for Fisher College’s short- and long-term future.

At the start of this school year, we can count our blessings. We are enormously grateful for the growth and success of the College. Annual giving enables more students to receive scholarships, allows the College to make needed facility improvements and allows for expanded program offerings. Giving is on the rise, in both number of gifts and who is giving. Every single gift makes a difference. Our faculty and students bring richness to the College that enhances the offerings, quality of programming, and student experience.

This Just In: Fisher News

On May 16, a group of 12 Fisher students, led by Professors Emily Banis Stoehrer and Katiti Kironde and joined by Elaine McGovern, Chair of the Board of Trustees Dr. Alexandra Bartsch, and her daughter Anastasia, boarded a plane headed for Paris. Assistant Professor of English Larry Poe (above) was a reviewer of two anthologies for Bedford St. Martin’s this year, 250 Poems, A Portable Anthology, by Peter Schakel and Jack Ridl, Eds., for the new (third) edition, and Literature: A Portable Anthology, by Janet Gardner, et al, Eds., also for the new (third) edition.

From the Desk of Janet Kuser Fisher College is pleased to announce a new academic structure, which reflects the continued growth of our academic offerings and our solid positioning as a baccalaureate institution. The new structure replaces the previous two academic divisions with four schools. These schools have been selected to purposely align programs, resources, and faculty within academic units. With the approval of our fourth and fifth bachelor’s degrees this fall, and a sixth degree on the horizon, the time was right to take this major step in support of our strategic goals and vision. Following represents the new academic structure:

School of Health Professions Dr. Neil Trotta has been promoted to Dean, in the Division of Accelerated and Professional Studies (formerly known as the Division of Continuing Education) and the School of Health Professions. The remaining three schools will be led by Dr. Tunde Turi-Markovic, Assistant Dean, School of Social Sciences and Human Services; Dr. Michael Meadows, Assistant Dean, School of Management and Communications, and Dr. Dean Walton, Assistant Dean, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Approximately 170 students earned a degree or certificate, with 75 additional students expected to graduate in August. The Valedictorian addresses were provided by Taryn Manning for the Day Division and Andrew Adler for Accelerated and Professional Studies.

Anthony Silva, co-host of WBZ Afternoon News and the station’s New England Business Editor, served as the honored commencement speaker. In his

speech, Mr. Silva spoke words of encouragement to young graduates: “You have spent four years here taking risks; signing up for new classes… meeting new people… mastering new talents and theories. Don’t stop now, you’ve only just begun. With a sense of urgency and passion, keep pushing yourself to take risks… because that will lead to real reward and real growth.” A few days later, the graduating class of 2012 from the Brockton Hospital School of Nursing received their diplomas in Nursing. Of the 95 graduates, 33 received their A.S. in General Studies from Fisher College.

“Where are we going to put that?”

Laurence Sisson (b. 1928) is an award-winning, Boston-born landscape and marine painter who has spent a lifetime capturing the rocky Maine coast and the stark beauty of the Southwest. Sisson demonstrated artistic talent at a young age and formally started his career after serving in the U.S. military in Japan. His work is informed by his time in Japan as well as his straightforward Yankee sensibility. His work is included in many public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Boston University, Colby College, and Dartmouth College.

That’s what Amy McKain asked her husband, Fisher College Librarian and avid art collector Josh McKain, when he brought home “Spring Tide,” an oil painting by New England artist Laurence Sisson, as a Mother’s Day present three years ago. The 96 ¼” x 46” painting leaned against a wall in their bedroom for more than two years.

Finally, they deemed it was too large for their house, or most houses, since it was originally commissioned for Worcester Federal Savings in 1968. They kindly decided to donate it to the Fisher College Library.

Jose A. Soto, Jr. ’04 Area Analyst, Sales Systems, Ritz-Carlton Born in Puerto Rico and transplanted north of Boston, MA, Jose Soto ’04 came to Fisher as an undecided student. He gained work experience at Fisher within various offices (Bursar, Finance, Athletics, and Registrar) but it wasn’t until he discovered the hotel and travel industry that he truly found his calling. He

What part of your Fisher education has helped you the most?

Essential classes: Public Speaking, Sales and Marketing, and Human Resources. However, while my courses were educational, it was the student activities, athletics, the dorm experience, and daily interactions with the other students and teachers that I truly benefited from the most. I grew from an introvert to extrovert.

What is a day-in-the-life of your job like?

No day is the same. I am the local administrator of the sales and catering solutions, which conduct data audits to ensure Ritz-Carlton standards for application values and data integrity are maintained. I work with Ritz-Carlton properties in Denver, CO, Bachelor Gulch, CO, and Dallas, TX. I have a unique setup and work remotely from my home in Boston, MA. I analyze booking and market segment trends, as well as train employees on the software. I present the findings to upper corporate and am evaluated on how each hotel is doing. I’m proud that I have been recognized as the top leader in my area two out of three years.

Can you describe the corporate culture at the Ritz-Carlton?

The Ritz-Carlton is a place where the guest and the employee are of equal importance. The company strives to make each guest’s stay have a lasting impact, and at the same time leaders encourage each employee’s professional aspirations. Diversity is cherished. There is a strict honor code that each employee takes very seriously (The Credo, 6th Diamond, Service Values, The Motto, Three Steps of Service, and our Employee Promise).

What’s your favorite ‘little thing’ that a hotel can do for a customer?

To fulfill the unexpressed wishes and needs of our guests. To WOW guests and clients is truly rewarding.

For example, when a guest checks in for a week-long conference, it is not unusual that they find a picture of their family and children in their room. We specialize in the unexpected gesture to make the guest feel overwhelming joy and comfort, knowing that we truly want them to feel at home.

Do you have any advice for new graduates on how to succeed in their career?

Don’t look at your job as a ‘job’— it’s a two-way street. You need to work hard, commit to a company, and keep an open mind. www.fisher.edu

Judy Moody Beck ’59

Moody’s Diner, Waldoboro, Maine We caught up with Judy at a family tag sale in Waldoboro, ME to learn about her family and that there is no substitute for hard work.

What is it like being from a large and legendary family?

I am number eight of a family of nine children and growing up in a home where your parents own and manage their own business, you learn good work ethics. My father was Percy “P.B.” Moody and he was quite the entrepreneur of his day. He founded Moody’s Diner, established in 1927. My beginning at the diner was at age 12, washing dishes. The following summer, at the “experienced” age of 13, my dad asked if I thought I could waitress because an employee failed to show. I don’t remember that first day and probably didn’t have a really good attitude, but that experience was just the beginning of a job I have learned to love!

Do you remember what brought you to Fisher?

My mom and dad felt that education was important and wanted all of their children to go to college. Dad was always proud of the fact that he was a high school graduate, class of 1919 and my mom taught in a one room school house. The only options available for women in 1957 were teacher, nurse, or secretary. I believe my high school guidance counselor suggested Fisher. Because I had an interest in the medical field, I chose Medical Secretary. After graduation, I worked at the Beth Israel Hospital in Brookline for a year before returning to Maine. I married, had three children, and lived in Connecticut for 22 years.

Once my children were in school, I worked part time in waitressing because it fit into my schedule. I worked for a Big Boy chain for several years and learned a lot from their efficient and excellent training. When my first child went to college, I started working more and had an assistant manager/waitress position for six years at a local

restaurant. In 1987 we moved back to Maine, taking all the experience of Fisher and these other jobs to Moody’s. At the request of my sister, I became the Dining Room Manager for 15 years. After that, I worked as assistant to my youngest son Dan who came on as general manager. Presently, I waitress a couple days a week and leave the managing to Dan. Do you have a favorite spare time activity?

Many years ago at a county fair I discovered clogging which is a type of Appalachian & Celtic dancing. In a move very unlike me, I went to a class by myself and was hooked. I danced for nine years and was involved in many competitions which were a lot of fun. Now when I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and still surviving three brothers and two sisters.

What is the most difficult career decision you ever had to make?

When do I retire? It’s hard to quit a job that I love. Still waitressing at 73, maybe my age will decide for me!

When traveling on Route 1 in Waldoboro, ME, stop in and say hello to Judy. For fun, try to find the photo of Judy and her dad at the Fisher College Father/Daughter dance on the wall. Judy recommends the grilled salmon. Kristen Sherman recommends saving room for the Peanut Butter Pie.

Faces of Fisher Nina Beltre ’07 and Jaé Holland ’08 Student-athletes Nina and Jaé never dreamed they would be working in the sports industry, let alone for their home team. Associate College Registrar Arthur Asbury gave them the tip that the Red Sox were hiring and shortly thereafter, they began their careers working for the Red Sox. They do not forget who helped them get their foot in the door and give back to Fisher students regularly by sharing their experiences, hosting student tours, and coming back to campus.

Nina and Jaé at Fenway Park Nina Beltre ’07, Fenway Ambassador, Fan Services and Entertainment I had never planned on working in the sports and entertainment industry. As a Red Sox Ambassador, I try to maintain a high level of professionalism, courtesy, and an overall positive attitude. I pride myself in being a person that others feel they can go to for help.

There are two other people from Fisher College that have really left a lasting influence on me; Professor Karen Myers ‘68 for her life lessons and inspirational past experiences, and Professor Janet Kuser for her guidance and expertise in business. Both are amazing people and educators. In addition to my Fisher College mentors, I owe my success to my mother, who has been the constant rock in my life— the epitome of strength, love, and selflessness.

The best piece of advice I would give to those wanting to enter the sports industry would be to apply for internships. Internships are the best way to showcase your abilities and break into any industry.

Favorite Red Sox player David Ortiz, not only is he a great player but he is caring and generous. He has a fun personality and is a family man. I have had the amazing opportunity to spend time with his family and his wife, Tiffany Ortiz, is calm, cool, and collected. She is just as amazing as David!

Jaé Holland ’08, Coordinator of Fan Services, Red Sox In my role at the Red Sox, I like to be known as someone who is very approachable. I think if you have that quality on your side, you can never go wrong because you are constantly meeting new people and bettering the existing relationships you have already formed.

I credit my peers at Fisher College as the most influential part of my education. The daily interactions and bonds that I made have helped mold me. Also, I was very influenced by Professor Janet Kuser and Professor Donna Brady. Without them, I wouldn’t be the ideal professional I am today.

My biggest inspiration for success is my hometown of Lynn, MA. Growing up on the west side of Lynn, I was always around the “dreamers”— some made it and some never attempted to make their dreams a reality. I wanted to break the stereotype of being an “inner city kid” and refused to be another statistic. This was and still is one of the driving forces in my life.

My advice for anyone thinking of entering the sports industry is to cherish every moment! It’s the little moments like making a child smile that can make you realize the reason why you wanted to work in the sports industry.

Favorite Red Sox player All the guys are great but if I had to pick one person I would say Mike Aviles. I actually had the chance to hang out with Mike for a couple of days this past winter during our annual New England Winter Caravan.

“Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there. They serve some sort of purpose, by teaching you lessons or helping you figure out who you are and who you want to become. For me this person was Nancy Welton ‘97.

Nancy recruited me as part of the Human Resources department of Prince Lobel Tye, LLC in 2007, and that was when everything began for me. I met Nancy while I was in high school and little did I know the amazing impact she would have on my life. Because of her, I decided to attain my degree in Human Resources at Fisher. A mentor offers encouragement, reduces mistakes, eliminates weaknesses, brings out your strengths, and will always be honest. A mentor will tell you the truth because their primary objective is to make sure you are successful. After years in the working world, I was nervous to go back to school to finish my degree. After meeting Professor Small, I had confidence that Fisher College was the right fit.

Alumni Advantages

The Military to Management program is part of the Bachelor of Science in Management degree. It incorporates a carefully constructed business core curriculum with a strong emphasis in management training and also allows students to specialize in either leadership or public administration, options that inherently draw from their military skills and knowledge. Benefits include Tuition Assistance, credits for prior learning, College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) credits, Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) credits, and flexible course scheduling to aid in the transition from military life to student and civilian life. Many of Fisher’s senior staff members, including our president, Dr. Thomas McGovern, are veterans and have earned degrees with the help of the GI Bill. Through the Military to Management initiative, Fisher is eager and equipped to assist military students reach their educational goals and build upon the leadership training they have received. Colleges and universities are working harder than ever to meet veterans’ postsecondary education needs. The Military to Management program is a highly customized and flexible program designed to ease the process of furthering education for active and former service members and their families.

Fisher College established the Division of Accelerated and Professional Studies in 1975 to serve Vietnam veterans returning from active duty.

Senior Master Sergeant is First Degree Completion Student Fisher College is proud to announce that Senior Master Sergeant Daniel Wilson ’12 of the U.S. Air Force, E8, graduated in May 2012 from Fisher College’s Degree Completion Program (DCP). Daniel Wilson is a career U.S. Air Force service member who has served for over 20 years. Wilson and his family have relocated several times over the course of his career. While stationed at Hanscom AFB in Bedford, MA, Wilson began taking courses in Fisher College’s Degree Completion Program (DCP) about a year ago. Wilson maintained a 3.9 GPA at Fisher College while taking care of his family and serving as an active duty Air Force service member. Wilson is currently stationed at Scott AFB in Illinois.

Fisher is dedicated to serving its veteran and active duty service members with the same honor and commitment they have shown while serving in the military. In addition to GI Bill benefits, Fisher College offers tuition discounts and in-state tuition to all veteran and active duty service members, as well as the Yellow Ribbon Program, MyCAA program, fee-waived applications, the ability to withdraw without penalty if called to active duty, and much more.

Athletics Update

Spring 2012 Season Wrap-Up The Fisher Falcons Baseball team finished second in the American Mideast Conference (AMC) regular season and is the first team at Fisher to qualify for post-season play. They finished sixth in the 2012 Unaffiliated Baseball Tournament in Kinston, North Carolina. The team finished in the Top 20 in stolen bases and stolen base attempts per game. The Lady Falcons Softball team finished fifth in the AMC regular season.

First Team All-Conference Honors went to outfielder Eridani Dume and starting pitcher Casey Reed, while Second Team Honors were awarded to first baseman Davidson Peguero, second baseman Victor Lebron, short stop Jose Paulino, outfielder Michael Flynn, and outfielder Dominic Zaher. Sophomore Eridani Dume set a Fisher single-season record with 44 stolen bases and finished second in the nation. Freshman Dominic Zaher finished first in the nation in fielding percentage of 1.000.

Jambo! (hello in Swahili) says Sarah Dunbar Goldberg ’61 who took the trip of her life, an African safari in the winter 2012. “It was my dream trip since I was a little girl!” She’s looking forward to seeing alums in Maine this September.

Gwendolyn Turner Mcbride ’82 lives in Framingham, MA and is a Director of Training at Staples.

Janet Strath Byrer ‘67 is grateful for the Fisher friendships that will last a lifetime.

Sue Hanley Brennan ’84 enjoyed her evening classes at the Buzzards Bay campus and is now the Vice President of KenMark Office Systems in Mashpee, MA.

From Pompano Beach, FL Merry Battles ’69 is a massage therapist and writing her second book about the healing work of body, mind and spirit, infused with a good dose of humor.

Dana Sorrentino Duggan ‘89 favorite Fisher memory was the senior year fashion show because herinstructor Taylor Hastie was married to actor Antonia Vargas, who played “Huggy Bear” on Starsky and Hutch. “He coordinated the show”! Dana owns South Shore Swimwear Company and was a semi-finalist for “Fashion Star” on NBC in April 2012.

Denise Burnett Scott Taylor ’79 lives in Connecticut and is an Early Childhood Manager at Hall Neighborhood house.

Denise fondly remembers being a part of Fisher News and her trip to Bermuda.

Kiri Kohlmetz Ryan ‘90 received her Master’s at Boston University and is now a School Social Worker, LCSW at John Jay High School in NY.

Nancy Thornley Strunk ’68 from Colorado is currently a Senior Managing Consultant at Berkeley Research Group.

Edith Joppich Churchill ‘79 earned Master’s at Stonehill College and now works in education. Her favorite part of Fisher was the small comfortable classroom with easy dialogue among students and instructors.

Edith Taylor Valeri ‘93 is a Lab Manager at Whitehead Institute at MIT. Angela Bates ‘94 favorite memory was attending Barcelona and Paris with her Fisher class.

Diane Bulcroft Quinn ’67 writes from Biloxi, MS “Thank you so much for providing me with a replacement yearbook from 1967. When one loses everything as we did in Hurricane Katrina, it is sometimes hard to imagine our past. Some may think a yearbook is just a material item, when in fact, it is a memory. It is hard to lose a memory. Material things can be replaced with money…not so memories. Looking through that year book brought back so many memories. Thank you.”

Debra Cerami Duckworth ‘95 went on to receive her Master’s at Hofstra University. Her favorite Fisher memory was traveling to Italy and England.

Allison Testa McHugh ‘95 earned her Associate’s in Nursing at Fisher’s Brockton Hospital School of Nursing and is currently the Director of Education, Professional Development and Nursing Research.

Tracee Vincenti Morse ‘98 says hello from Pembroke, MA and is currently an RN. Jamie Perkins Freedman ‘98 and her husband wrote a children’s picture book “Welcome to Plow Town,” which is available on Amazon.com.

Danielle Souza ’10 (bottom left) is living and studying art in San Francisco. “I was very fortunate to be able to work on “The Devils Carnival” as a costume seamstress. My job was to take the costumes after the fittings and alter them. I also would be on standby on set if anything (like a ripped hem) needed to be fixed. I would help in the dressing rooms and then clear out the costumes as the end of the night. It was a great experience and I got to meet some amazing people though it!”
