Hotwire.com calls Albuquerque a Top Five Autumn Destination

C

ool, crisp mornings and bright, sunny days are just a couple of reasons that visitors are attracted to Albuquerque’s desert oasis, and the folks at Hotwire.com have taken notice. The discount travel site unveiled their fall 2012 Where To Go Now & How Guide today, featuring Albuquerque as one of its “Top Five Destinations for an Awesome Autumn.” Back in March, the Duke City was recognized as one of Hotwire.com’s “Top 10 Value Cities in the U.S.” touting the city as “the epicenter of Southwestern culture.” This new ranking puts the city in the company of both domestic and international fall destinations including Amsterdam, London, Quebec and San Diego. “It’s been a great year for Albuquerque with recognition from a variety of national media outlets, especially for fall travel, and we’re thrilled to be highlighted by Hotwire once again,” said Dale Lockett, President/CEO of the Albuquerque Convention & Visitors Bureau. So why is Albuquerque such an ideal destination for fall months? Hotwire.com credits pleasant temperatures, outdoor activity options, the city’s culture and low prices. It also highlights the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, Historic Old Town and the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway. In addition to this ranking, Albuquerque has recently been showcased as a Top U.S. Destination in October by Reuters and a Top 10 In-Demand October Getaway by CheapFlights.com. National Geographic also recently named the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta as one of their Best Fall Trips for 2012. To learn more about the Hotwire.com ranking, please view the official release.

Simple Steps That Can Cut Energy Costs

here’s good news for homeowners. By taking a few practical steps, they can help to put a lid on rising energy costs. According to the ENERGY STAR program, the typical U.S. household spends approximately $1,300 per year on home energy bills—and 50 to 70 percent of that is spent on heating and cooling. Fortunately, one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to reduce energy use at home is to ensure that your home is properly insulated. Starting At The Top From attics to basement walls to floors over crawl spaces, there are many areas of the home that can benefit from proper insulation. One of the more important places to start is the attic. It’s the most accessible and least expensive to insulate. Some recommend using a fiberglass loose-fill insulation, such as CertainTeed’s

InsulSafe SP, which boasts superior thermal efficiency and sound control. Adding insulation can also qualify homeowners for rebates and tax credits. Check out www. certainteed.com/itools to find out what incentives are available in your area. A Helpful Energy Audit Another resource is the Residential Energy Services Network, or ResNet. It offers certified auditors who can help homeowners evaluate a home to determine where and how energy is being lost. The audit can also find out what systems are operating inefficiently and what costeffective improvements—such as adding insulation-can be implemented to enhance comfort and lower utility

costs. For more energy-saving tips or to find a contractor, visit www.certainteed.com/ insulation or call 800-782-8777. --NAPSI

Computer Backup Made Easy With Windows 8

P

C users rejoice: Windows 8 is here and many experts agree that the new operating system for PCs will provide much greater flexibility for creating, sharing and enjoying all the content that consumers have collected and stored on their computers. However, experts urge consumers to back up all the digital content on their computer before upgrading to the new Windows 8 software, as missteps during any operating system transition could result in loss of digital data or corrupted files. Call for Backup Backup is crucial for any and all computer users. By storing second and even third copies of precious digital files, such as family photos, home video, financial documents and more on separate external hard drives, users protect their important files in the case of theft, lost computers, viruses or environmental damages, in addition to the occasional failure of the storage mechanism(s), including hard drives and solid-state drives. New Features Microsoft recognizes the importance of regularly backing up even after the transition to the newer operating system, which is why it has included two new features: File History and Storage Spaces. File History allows users to schedule regular backups to any hard drive

directory on their computer. Additionally, Storage Spaces affords users the ability to make multiple external hard drives appear as a single storage volume for those who need the extra storage, or as multiple storage volumes for multiple, extra-safe computer backup options. Some Solutions Storage vendors like WD offer a variety of backup solutions for everyday consumers, including portable and desktop external hard drives that connect to the computer via ultrafast USB 3.0 connections, such as WD’s My Passport line of portable drives or My Book line of desktop drives. The fast transfer speeds of these drives means regular backup will be quick and painless. Another option for consumers is network storage, which includes paidfor “cloud services” or WD’s personal cloud network drives, which connect to a home network and can be accessed from any computer or mobile device anywhere in the world, and offer the security and peace of mind that only a personal hard drive can provide. The same WD drive can be used to back up a computer both before and after a user makes the switch to Windows 8, as all WD products—

An Anti-Aging Regimen For Your House

M

aintaining a “youthful” home through preventative maintenance can save you money in costly repairs and preserve its overall value. So where’s the best place to start? Here are some ideas: • Regular checkups are key. Get out your binoculars and look for shingles that are buckled, curled, blistered or missing an excessive amount of granules. If left unrepaired, these damaged shingles could result in leaks into your attic and further into your house, resulting in mold and rot. Get a roofing contractor to check that your roof is in good condition. • Protect against fading and stains. New exterior building materials used in siding, fence and decking products can help maintain a longlasting, vibrant appearance. Available in many outstanding, vibrant colors, EverNew cellular PVC and composite decking from CertainTeed is backed by a 25-year Stain-and-Fade Resistance warranty, ensuring a dynamic outdoor oasis for many years to come. • Use impact-resistant shingles for a healthy roof. They help provide a more durable, stronger roof to protect your home from hail, falling debris and high winds. For example, Landmark Solaris IR meets the industry’s highest standards for impact resistance. In addition, it repels the sun’s rays and lowers the surface temperature of a roof by up to 20 degrees during warm months. • Choose durable siding materials. One, Cedar Impressions siding, is molded from real cedar shingles and designed and tested to withstand hurricane-force winds. The siding is also virtually maintenance free, never needs painting and is backed with a lifetime-limited warranty. • Address problem spots. If not properly insulated, an attic can be a huge drain on your monthly energy bill and compromise the overall comfort

of your home. Online tools, such as www.certainteed.com/itools, can help guide you through the process of ensuring your home has proper insulation. Keep these tips in mind and you may find that your home can provide you and your family more comfort at less cost. --NAPSI
