Westchester. We made this change to better communicate not just who we are, but what we do and who we serve. We are Feeding Westchester. Please rest assured that all we changed is our name and our URL. Our mission, our great programs, our staff and leadership, POUND and our passion to fight hunger remains the same.
In 2017, with a new President and CEO, we distributed 8.4 million pounds of food to help meet the meal needs of nearly 200,000 hungry Westchester residents. It was our second year of a five year strategic plan, with a goal to distribute 10.5 million pounds of heathy, nutritious food annually by 2021, and we are proud of our progress. Our distribution center, with large walk in freezer and refrigerator, and fleet of trucks, remained the core of our operations to efficiently source healthy, nutritious food from dedicated retailers and wholesalers. Our trucks ran the highways and byways of our county, full with carefully packed agency orders as they left our distribution center, and full with food recovered from our food partners when they came back. We recovered more than 1.5 million pounds of great food otherwise going to waste. More than 26,000 volunteer hours, including many donated by dedicated weekly volunteers, helped us sort donated food and pack bulk food into family-sized portions for our more
than 290 partner agencies. Overall, we provided 95% of all food distributed by Westchester’s food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and daycare and residential programs. As you’ll read in these pages, we fed Westchester. We helped families struggling to make ends meet due to high costs of living, seniors on fixed incomes with medical bills, and children looking at empty cupboards on weekends. We provided food to agencies so after church or a community meeting, a mother could visit a stocked food pantry. We provided a specially packed bag of fresh produce for a senior and delivered it to the center where they spent many of their days. We provided backpacks filled with child-friendly, easy to prepare meals to children in schools so they had meals for weekends. And, we brought a 26 foot refrigerated truck, our Mobile Food Pantry, to sites across Westchester to deliver more than 2.2 million pounds of food directly to the families, children and seniors who are hungry in Westchester. As we say often in the office, “It takes a team”! We could not have done this great work without our dedicated board, staff and volunteers. And, we could not have distributed 8.4 million pounds of food across Westchester without the support of our agency partners and our dedicated donors and supporters.

OUR CONTINUOUS GROWTH.

For many who are struggling, wages remain low and stagnant. The cost of living in Westchester continues to rise and groceries are often the first line slashed in the budget.

Our Programs Bring Food Directly To Hungry Neighbors. In every neighborhood in need, we’re feeding people efficiently, while treating clients with the dignity they deserve.
Recently, a teacher in Port Chester noticed that one of her fifth graders was having trouble concentrating in class. She learned that due to family troubles, the child had no breakfast to eat. Feeding Westchester sprang into action, enrolling him in our BackPack Program, which gives children bags of easy-to-prepare foods they take home to sustain them over weekends and holidays. School Community Director Carmen Parker, reported immediate results, sharing,

The BackPack Program is just one of the ways that your support is feeding Westchester. 12
MOBILE FOOD PANTRY This specialized 26-foot refrigerated truck brings a “market on wheels” to underserved communities so that fresh, nutritious foods can be delivered directly to those who need it. SENIOR GROCERY PROGRAM Our Senior Grocery Program encourages better health and promotes independent living for seniors and neighbors with disabilities by bringing fresh produce, and other nutritious food directly to where they live or gather. Each bag includes a balance of nutritious food such as fresh fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy, and grains. Many of our participants are unable to visit our pantries because of low mobility, but they still have the desire and ability to prepare meals at home. They benefit greatly from the autonomy that comes with cooking and preparing their own meals with fresh groceries delivered to their home through our program. FRESH MARKETS Our Fresh Markets in Mount Vernon and Yonkers, provide seasonal fruits and vegetables directly to clients. On market day, food deserts are transformed into vibrant sources of top-quality, fresh, colorful produce. Clients and agencies arrive to select from up to 10,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables — everything from apples and mangos to spinach and zucchini! 13

TO EXPAND CLIENTS’ FOOD PURCHASING POWER, we enrolled more than 1,000 people in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other benefit programs.
In 2017, Feeding Westchester went beyond simply feeding people – through creative and long-term strategies to fight hunger.
TO HELP PEOPLE LEARN TO SHOP, COOK AND EAT WELL ON A LIMITED BUDGET, we taught hundreds of hands-on cooking and nutrition education classes.
TO TRANSFORM “FOOD DESERT” NEIGHBORHOODS DEVOID OF HEALTHY OPTIONS, we helped people to grow their own food – with 12,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables harvested in 2017! Feeding Westchester’s five farms and 13 gardens encouraged physical activity and relieved stress, while yielding bounties of the freshest food around.
TO PROTECT PEOPLE FROM FACING HUNGER IN THE YEARS TO COME, in partnership with the New York State Food Bank Association and Feeding America, in recent months Feeding Westchester has fought to preserve important social benefits such as SNAP in the 2018 federal budget. 15

AN EVENING IN GOOD TASTE 30 renowned Westchester chefs created an unforgettable experience for over 600 Feeding Westchester supporters at our largest fall benefit yet.

SPRING GALA This elegant dinner, held at the Tappan Hill Mansion in Tarrytown, brought 330 guests together to celebrate our accomplishments and future, and welcome our new President & CEO, Leslie Gordon.
GOLDEN SCOOP Fourteen corporate teams competed against each other to pack food! Competitors proved their commitment to hunger relief -- together packing over 300 pounds of food per minute! The winner, Curtis Instruments, was awarded the coveted Golden Scoop Competition Trophy!
MILES FOR MEALS An Annual Hunger Action Month 5K Walk and Run for hunger relief at Pace University. Participants of all skill levels “paced” themselves as they ran, jogged, walked or sprinted the 5 kilometer course– to help raise awareness and funds to support Feeding Westchester.
HUNGER ACTION MONTH September is Hunger Action Month – a time when Feeding Westchester joins the National Hunger Movement and Feeding America, the nationwide network of food banks, in educating our communities about hunger and identifying ways each one of us can help.
HUNGER HEROES AWARDS BREAKFAST We recognized the important work and support of five partnering organizations – Claremont Elementary School, Cerebral Palsy Westchester, Curtis Instruments, Elmsford Union Free School District and JPMorgan Chase -- at our signature awards breakfast. 17

VOLUNTEER Your time and talent help us fight hunger. Annually, volunteers give nearly 27,000 hours to our work. We need people like you at our distribution center, in our office, at events, at Mobile Food Pantry distributions, and at our farms. We have opportunities for corporate, community, school and family groups (including children!) on weekdays, evenings, and weekends.
TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITIES A corporate group engagement shift at Feeding Westchester doesn’t just help your community. It can also boost your team’s morale. We welcome groups of 10 to 80 people, Monday through Friday, to pack food. The work is enormously helpful to us, and teams tell us it’s gratifying to them too!
