I n May 2007, we sent a medical team to the heart of the Somali capital Mogadishu, one of those largely forgotten places where extreme violence is quick to erupt. Reduced to armed anarchy again after the Union of Islamic Courts was driven out, cholera had hit Mogadishu. Setting up a project there required extensive and meticulous preparation, but fortunately we were in time to treat 1,300 cholera patients. After the epidemic, we continued the effort converting the project into a centre for paediatric care and an inpatient clinic. Around us, large parts of the population continued to flee, hoping to find refuge, something so lacking in the city.
