We are so obsessed with doing that we have no time and no imagination left for being. As a result, [people] are valued not for what they are but for what they do or what they have - for their usefulness.” -Thomas Merton (Trappist monk, author of Seven Storey Mountain) It’s August. The beginning of a new school years is only days away. Where did the summer go? It went the way of vacation days, of hours spent in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, of days spent lying by the pool, of trips home to visit family. The summer melted away with the countless number of ice cream cones, popsicles, and suppers from the grill. Most importantly, however, this summer was spent by the folks here at Williams in service and mission. Our youth spent time away serving others and growing closer to one another and Christ as they traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina for Passport. Our children’s ministry and other volunteers put together a great Vacation Bible School and showed the children of our community that God has the whole world in His hands. Sixteen of our members traveled to the Rio Grande Valley (the USA/Mexico border) to encourage our sisters and brothers there and serve alongside them in the work of God’s ever-moving kingdom. As we gathered for worship each Sunday, we celebrated baptism, shared in communion, and we were challenged by the words of Holy Scripture. We had college students serving in the work of God’s kingdom all around the world: Todd Kirk serving in Asia, and Holly Smith serving with Passport in Florida and Virginia. Where did the summer go? It went into the work of growing God’s kingdom. As we enter once again into the after-summer rhythms of life, as we “get back to normal,” let me challenge you to keep the kingdom of God and God’s calling ever before you. Don’t let “normal” be enough. Be bold! Continue the good work Christ has done and is doing through the First Baptist Church of Williams— and if you haven’t had a chance to join in on it yet, don’t wait any longer! Come and see what the Lord is doing, what God is calling you to do. Grace and Peace, Chris P.S. At the end of this month, I will be traveling to Amsterdam for two weeks. I have been accepted into the Ph.D. program at the International Baptist Theological Study Centre at the VU University in Amsterdam. I will have the opportunity to study with some of the brightest minds in Baptist life from around the world, and I’m looking forward to the ways this program will deepen my skills as your pastor and my spiritual life. In my absence, Terri Byrd (AL CBF) and Ron Grizzle (McAfee) will be preaching. I also want to thank you all for the incredibly generous shower for our son, Kohl. As the day gets closer when our family will be together, Sallie and I covet not only your prayers, but your understanding. As we adjust to life with a toddler, and as he adjusts to life in our home, there will be times when we may not be as available. There will be a period of time when we will have to keep Kohl at home, a time for bonding and attachment. We love you all so much, and cannot tell you how much we appreciate your prayers, gifts, and understanding. We can’t wait for you to meet Kohl!
