With heat and humidity fastapproaching, now is the time to update your makeup routine. Keep your face looking fresh with sweatproof and waterproof products that will take you from your morning meeting to roof-deck happy hour. Heat and humidity can be tricky opponents. Lightweight primers and setting sprays are your allies in the war on smudge, once temperatures skyrocket. Sheer, tinted moisturizers and foundations such as the Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer ($42, Narscosmetics.com and local Sephora stores) can also work wonders in the humidity. Lounging poolside? Smashbox’s Camera Ready BB cream SPF 35 ($39, Sephora.com and local Sephora stores) is super lightweight, ultra waterproof and provides great, even coverage. A waterproof concealer for covering under-eye darkness and imperfections also doesn’t hurt. Be sure to also use waterproof mascara to battle the humidity. If your current beloved mascara can’t handle the H20, add a waterproof formula on the tips of your lashes to help boost staying power. When it comes to blush, avoid powder — it doesn’t hold up well and can look heavy. Instead, aim for liquid creams and mousses. Cream is also the name of the game for eyes. Makeup For Ever Aqua Cream Eyeshadow ($23, Sephora.com and local Sephora stores) is insanely waterproof, pigmented and looks beautiful. Plus, it takes just seconds to apply with your fingertips. Finally, blotting papers ($8 and up, Sephora.com and local Sephora stores) are an absolute must for keeping oiliness at bay. Just press and go. Keep the glow — just get rid of the unsightly shine. GRAPHIC GRAPHIC Spring Spring If geometry wasn’t your best subject, better take a refresher course. As graphic grid patterns emerge on clothing this season, it’s crucial to know the right angles. Here, some of the additions we’re angling to add to our spring closet. Photographs by Oriana Layendecker Produced by Megan Pfiffner and Janet Kelly

Valentyna pairs her new-for-spring Jennifer Chun Brushstroke windowpane printed polo shirt ($275, jennifer-chun.com) with a matching Brushstroke windowpane layered maxi skirt ($345, jennifer-chun.com). Adding a touch of sparkle are an H. Stern Stars ring ($3,900) and H. Stern Stars earrings ($7,800). Both, Saks Fifth Avenue, Chevy Chase. Dries Van Noten rubber-sole platform sandals ($860, Barneys, 3040 M St. NW, 202-350-5832).

THIS PAGE: Lean in in an Alice + Olivia by Stacey Benet Aubrey Strapless Gown ($1,498, aliceandolivia.com). Shoulder-dusting earrings are from Stephen Webster’s Lady Stardust collection ($9,950, Tiny Jewel Box). OPPOSITE PAGE: Forget plain geometry. Drape a Brooks Brothers Black Fleece cotton-knit cardigan with plaid tulle overlay and grosgrain trim ($595, Brooks Brothers area stores and brooksbrothers.com) over a Jennifer Chun embroidered organza short-sleeve shirt ($275, jennifer-chun.com) and Jennifer Chun coated tweed A-line skirt ($315, jennifer-chun.com). Small bags are in, especially when they’re as cheeky as Mark Cross’s Saffiano Lips ($1,895, markcross1845.com). Stay grounded in Zero + Maria Cornejo’s Flor Heel ($825, zeromariacornejo.com). Cobblestones H. Stern earrings ($3,300) and Cobblestones H. Stern ring ($5,600), both Saks Fifth Avenue, Chevy Chase.

Checking IN

Mr. Baby Cashmere

P

ier Luigi Loro Piana, of the eponymous Italian cashmere and luxurygoods company, last month followed his passion for sailing to Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands, to compete in the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta. His chartered boat didn’t win the three-day event, but we caught up with the 63-year-old deputy chairman there and learned a lot about the Loro Piana company and the rare, ultra-luxury goods it sells, including babycashmere sweaters for $1,700 and rare vicuña throws for $12,000.

FW: You have opened a beautiful Loro Piana shop in Washington’s new City Center complex downtown. Why Washington? Why now? Pier Luigi Loro Piana [with a delighted laugh]: It’s the most important town in the United

States, with a wonderful mix of formal and casual, real American style. We think it will be a good fit for us.

FW: I know Loro Piana started out as an early-19th-century textile manufacturer and the company as we know it today dates back to 1924. PLLP: Yes, and we only started making luxury goods in the 1970s. We were not in retail until

1990. My father left us a company with 400 employees — that’s a medium-size company for Italy. Today we have almost 2,800 employees.

FW: What made you agree to sell 80 percent of the company [for $2.57 billion] to the French luxury firm LVMH (Moet Hennessy – Louis Vuitton) almost two years ago? PLLP: We went looking for them; they didn’t come to us. My brother knew he had a health

problem. [Sergio Loro Piana died in December 2013, six months after the sale.] He and my sister wanted to sell.

FW: Still, it seems sad. PLLP: We did what we could do. We Italians are good at running family companies. Arnault

[Bernard Arnault, who heads LVMH, with its 70 luxury brands] is a genius. He can run 10 companies. But LVMH has the philosophy of a big family company — that was important for our employees and the farmers who sell us our raw materials. Big companies should help keep artisans and craftsmen and farmers alive by creating a market for their products.

FW: Yes, I’m told you have relationships with farmers all over the world. PLLP: We visit regularly with herders in Mongolia who comb [the underfleece from] their

Hircus goats once a year for us. Now we use baby cashmere, too, even more precious — like a human baby’s hair, the baby goat’s hair is 20 percent finer. In the Andes in Peru we have helped to preserve vicuñas, which were being poached. And now in Myanmar we are turning the ancient fiber of the lotus flower into a most precious fabric. It takes the fibers inside almost 26,000 lotus-flower stems, spun by hand in the traditional manner by Burmese women, to produce enough fabric for a blazer.

FW: So what is the difference between your cashmere and the inexpensive sweaters we see that are promoted, especially around Christmas time, for a couple of hundred dollars? PLLP: The levels of quality depend on several things: The origin of the cashmere, the micron

FW: But how can I tell in a store whether a cashmere sweater is good-enough quality? PLLP: First, brand recognition. As a brand, we want to take full responsibility for the quality.

Then the retailer should be a guarantor of quality. And you should be able to rely on labels. I am pro-traceability, to know where everything came from and where it was made.

FW: But how many people can afford the ultra-luxury products you produce? PLLP: We try to find customers all around the world. [Loro Piana already has 18 stores in

mainland China and Japan.] A big part of my job has been to make the company global, to find the customer.

Top, Pier Luigi Loro Piana. Above right, ultralight My Sunglasses N.1, $1,125, and a limited-edition printed cashmere Regatta blanket trimmed with suede, $5,450. At Loro Piana, 949 H St. NW and loropiana.com.

FW: As I have learned, sports performance plays a role in the fabrics and fibers you develop. PLLP: Yes, we made clothes for the Italian equestrian team, boating clothes and skiwear too.

And we make these [made to measure, customized] shoes for men. It’s a great shoe. [He shifts his feet to show his navy unlined-suede moccasins.] My [dress] shoes are custom-made. They’re an investment.

FW: And your wife’s shoes? PLLP: Oh, I don’t want to make Mr. Della Valle unhappy [referring to Diego Della Valle, who

heads up the Tod’s shoe company]. Women’s shoes are a waste of money.

difference (the size of the individual hairs), the technology we apply in finishing the fabric. And part of it is quantity: We make in small series — 100 sweaters, not 1 million. Our sweater may weigh 300 grams, not 200 grams. And of course cashmere sweaters made in China have a lower labor cost. All of our things are made in Italy. At every stage of the operation, we are driven not by cost-saving but by quality. [A Loro Piana women’s medium-weight-baby-cashmere sweater may cost $1,675, a women’s knitted tunic in rare vicuña $7,850.]
