> D’un commun accord, trois réalisateurs de légende se lancent une sorte de défi cinématographique. Où cela va-t-il mener? Ça mènera à TRIANGLE , un pari plutôt téméraire, mais couronné de succès, en fin de compte. Voici la recette. Il était une fois trois bons amis appelés Tsui Hark, Ringo Lam, et Johnnie To. En plus d’être potes, ce sont tous des réalisateurs célèbres de Hong Kong. Ils conçoivent une histoire: l’intro, les développements divers, et puis la conclusion. Mais ils décident de scinder ça en trois, afin que chacun d’entre eux puisse être aux commandes d’un tiers du film. Hark réalise le début, commence à étoffer les personnages, et met déjà en place certaines interactions inattendues, que le suivant (Ringo Lam) devra respecter. Le suivant prend le relais, maintient la cohérence de tout ça, et en rajoute même! Finalement, Johnnie To, le dernier mais non le moindre, hérite de l’œuvre, et doit boucler la boucle, pour que ça ait de la gueule, comme on dit… Et ça a de la gueule.

On connaît Tsui Hark pour avoir vu SEVEN SWORDS , THE BLADE , et, bien sûr, ZU WARRIORS . Ici, il nous présente trois compères malchanceux complotant un
coup fumant pour se mettre un peu de fric dans les poches. Louis Koo incarne l’un d’eux, simultanément fier-à-bras et informateur, puisqu’il travaille pour les Triades, mais transmet également des rapports à un dur à cuire de la police. Le second de ces trois amis, interprété par Simon Yam, est dans une position intenable: le policier dur à cuire le fait chanter, et convoite secrètement sa femme, allant jusqu’à persuader Louis Koo de l’emmener dans une opération compromettante, juste pour pouvoir effectuer une descente, et le coffrer. Est-ce que vous suivez? Certes, TRIANGLE est un nœud plutôt serré, mais un nœud intelligent. Ringo Lam, qui a réalisé FULL CONTACT, CITY ON FIRE , et FULL ALERT, est ici à son meilleur — et il oblige Johnnie To, le génie qui nous a offert les ELECTION , EXILED, et autres BREAKING NEWS , à se surpasser, une fois de plus. Conceived as a challenge between three close friends who also happen to be major Hong Kong film directors, TRIANGLE is a single story helmed in stages by Tsui Hark, Ringo Lam and Johnnie To. Here’s how it works: Hark (SEVEN SWORDS , THE BLADE , ZU WARRIORS ) kicks things off, scripting and directing the opening third before passing the reins to Ringo Lam. For his part, Lam (FULL CONTACT, CITY ON FIRE , FULL ALERT ) must respect the characters and rules that Hark laid down in his act, but is otherwise free to take the story wherever he wants before passing things off to Johnnie To (ELECTION , EXILED, BREAKING NEWS ). It’s To’s task must wrap things up and bring it to a close.

Hark throws down the gauntlet in the opening act, introducing a trio of down-on-their-luck friends considering pulling a heist for some much-needed cash. One of the trio, played by Louis Koo, is also doing double duty, pulling thefts for a triad gang while selling information to a hard-assed cop. The second member of the group (Simon Yam) is being cuckolded by the cop Koo is snitching to, and the cop, both clever and ruthless, is leaning on Koo to take Yam along on a job so the police can swoop in, catch Yam in the act, and clear the path to Yam’s wife. Got that? TRIANGLE is a clever, densely plotted affair that sees Hark, Lam and To pushing themselves and each other as hard as they can and it’s a rush to see each of the trio rise to the challenge in their own unique style. —Todd Brown
