hello...

March 2011

S

pringtime is a time for growth and a renewal of the spirit, of warmer days, a new season of sports and, yes, the inevitable summer itch among schoolchildren everywhere. I love books. I love to read a good story, enjoy beautiful illustrations, feel sentimental about books I read as a child, and there are some volumes I like simply because they have a beautiful binding to admire. My own favorite books are sentimental choices to share with my son: The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr, You Choose! by Pippa Goodhart and Nick Sharratt, Up and Down by Oliver Jeffers, and Toot Toot Beep Beep by Emma Garcia. Cambridge Wordfest which holds its Spring festival in March, is nothing less than a literary feast. Its programmes cover all genres and offer a fantastic variety of events for the entire family - see page 27. This issue of Family Grapevine also details Rhymetimes and storytimes for children in our local libraries on page 18, as well as some advice on story-telling from Jenny Connatty, a local

Stories in other languages Our local libraries have picture books and storybooks for children whose first language is not English. These books are available in a wide variety of languages such as Bengali, Chinese, French and Polish. Many of the books are bilingual, which means the words are in English and another language. Central Library Cambridge, Milton Road, Huntingdon, Ely and Wisbech Libraries have large collections of these books. Many other libraries have smaller collections. You can request any of the books free of charge. ** In our libraries, the books have a sticker on the spine which has JFL + the first three lettters of the language e.g. JFL SPA for Spanish books. ** To search the library catalogue for them, simply type jfl + the first three letters of the language you are looking for into the search box, e.g. jfl chi for children’s books in Chinese, then change ‘words and phrase’ to ‘class number’. ** Books for children learning languages are also available and can be found in the 400s section of the children’s information books.

Be a part of it – Help give birth to the new Rosie!

T

he Rosie is an established name throughout the East of England, having provided specialist services for over 25 years, offering women and babies in the region first-class maternity, neonatal and gynaecological services. The hospital now needs to undergo a major expansion to cope with the population increases in the area; to allow our outstanding medical teams to continue to develop groundbreaking new treatments, and to provide the highest quality care to women and babies in the East of England. New facilities will include an Imaging Centre for women and children, expanded Neonatal Intensive and Special Care Baby Unit, Parent and Family Accommodation, Fetal Medicine and Day Assessment Unit and a 10-room midwife-led Birth Centre. The site was officially handed over to the contractors in November 2010, and work is underway, with a planned finish date of spring 2012. In order to make the vision of a new Rosie a reality, a £30 million build is underway to extend the current facility. Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has committed to funding £23 million of this but we need to raise the remaining £7 million from charitable sources. We’re delighted to say that since fundraising began a year ago, we have raised almost half of the £7 million we require and we’d like to thank everyone who has made a commitment to the Rosie Campaign. Now we need to ask for your help... Earlier this month the Rosie Hospital Campaign was officially launched to the general public with the help of the Cambridge News. Lots of staff, patients, former patients and the general public are already getting involved in and planning fundraising activities, which include dying hair ‘Rosie pink’, pancake flipping contests and karaoke nights amongst other things! Staff at the Rosie are undertaking the Three Peaks Challenge in July to raise funds for the Campaign. “The Rosie is a true community facility and has a huge impact on the health and wellbeing of women, babies and their families across Cambridge and the East of England. The Rosie is planning a three-storey extension to increase its capacity to treat sick mothers and babies and now we’re asking for the general public to support us in making this happen. We are asking as many people as possible to raise funds for the Rosie Campaign by taking part in local fundraising events or making gifts online”. Gerry Hackett, Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Co-Divisional Director, Women’s and Children’s Services.

How can you help?

Y

ou can make a gift to the Rosie through the new Campaign website www.therosiecampaign.org.uk or by contacting the ACT office via 01223 217757. We are also planning numerous activities that the general public can take part in. For example, the Rosie is one of the main beneficiaries of the Sawston Fun Run in May, and we need as many people as possible to run for the Rosie! Perhaps you could organise your own fundraising event to raise funds? Please see the Campaign website for other news and activities. If you have any questions, comments or ideas, please contact the ACT office on 01223 217757 or act@addenbrookes.nhs.uk www.cambridgegrapevine.co.uk

Free debt advice From your local Insolvency Practitioner Many people don’t realise they have a debt problem until it’s too late. As an Insolvency Practitioner specialising in IVAs my first contact from many new clients is when they call in anguish to say they can’t make their latest debt repayment, although they’ve never missed a payment before, and just been turned down for more credit. Until then, they’ve concealed their growing problem by simply applying for a new card once the last one’s reached its limit. With an IVA you make just one monthly payment for all your debts, and as long as you stick with it for 5 years, you’ll be debt-free at the end of it. Min. unsecured debt £25,000, min. monthly payment £300. Homeowners may need to remortgage at the end of the IVA if sufficient equity.

¶ Beautiful Homes ¶

The Cambridge office of Belle Casa (Beautiful Homes) was established in 2002 by Barry & Rachel Turpin and has grown to be the largest Domestic Cleaning Company in the Cambridge area. Over 20% of new clients are purely by recommendation of existing customers.

We know how hard it can be to find a dependable and honest cleaner, which is where we can help.

With over 400 clients and more than 100 housekeepers Belle Casa is able to offer a professional cleaning & ironing (if required) service to Cambridge, Ely and surrounding villages.

BELLE CASA We can offer a professional cleaning, washing and ironing etc. Service for a fully inclusive rate at only £10.75 per hour (£10.25 for 5 or more). All of our housekeepers are specially selected & insured and you will receive the same housekeeper each week. So, if you’d like to take the pressure off keeping up with your household chores, then call us today on:

30 DAY MONEY BACK GUARANTEE

They are realistically priced at £10.75 per hour, fully inclusive of insurances on both the housekeeper and your home and this is guaranteed not to increase until January 2013. There is a minimum cleaning agreement of only 2 hours weekly (or 4 hours fortnightly), using your own products and equipment as the company realises that each client has their own individual preference with the vast range of products on offer nowadays. There are obviously standard guidelines as to what would usually be cleaned, but again the company appreciates that each client has their own individual requirements so you are given the flexibility to vary what is cleaned each session, if required. Another common sense approach by the company is to keep the same housekeeper with you; they feel that this is beneficial to all concerned. Once a housekeeper is allocated to you, usually within a few days, he / she will make contact with you and meet you at a time convenient to you prior to the start of your cleaning. This gives you a chance not only to make sure that you are happy with the housekeeper allocated but also a chance to show them around your home and discuss any requirements you may have. If this sounds like what you are looking for then why not book an appointment: Call: 01223 441055 Or visit their Website: www.cleanerscambridge.com

8 Baby Classes and Services

How to choose suitable classes before and after birth for you and your baby?

F

irstly think what you hope to gain from any classes you attend, what kind of atmosphere do you look for and what kind of activities do you enjoy? Take time to find out what is available in your area and maybe visit a class to see if it is what you are looking for. Before the birth of your baby there are Antenatal Yoga and exercise classes to help you enjoy your pregnancy. Active Birth courses and workshops will give you both information and practical ideas to prepare for the birth of your baby. Once your little one has arrived there are many activities you can share together. Look for classes that are relaxed and fun, a time you can really bond with your baby and also make new friends. Classes

include Baby Massage, Baby Yoga and Baby Signing. All a wonderful way to communicate with your baby, enhancing interaction and promoting both physical and cognitive development. If you enjoy water why not introduce your baby to the joys of swimming. Choose classes that have a gentle approach. All moves and little dives should be relaxed and fun and meet the needs of each individual baby. Whatever classes you chose, help your little one to explore and interact with the world around them and above all enjoy this time together. 10 Music Time

Music

for toddlers Music is a natural part of life for toddlers. This early introduction to music does more than entertain. It can kickstart learning, serve as an important cue in a child’s routine, and offer lifelong benefits. Of course there’s another reason to introduce music into your toddler’s world: It’s enjoyable for both of you. Between the ages of 1 and 3, kids respond best to music when they actively experience it. Passive listening (like in the car) is fine, but look for opportunities to get your child rocking, marching, rolling, tapping, clapping, and moving to the beat. Kids’ music CDs are great, but don’t forget to share your own favorite music with your kids. A toddler who loves Beethoven or Bruce Springsteen? Why not? You might also enroll your child in a music class. If you do, be sure the class is developmentally appropriate — for kids this age, that means it shouldn’t last more than 45 minutes and it should be something you and your child do together. Classes are a fun way to enjoy music together; they’re also good sources for music and activities to enjoy at home. Even if you do take a class with your child, remember that you are your child’s first and most important teacher when it comes to music — and so much more. To help your child really benefit from a music class, be sure to bring the music and games you learn there into your home.

The Best Tales to Share...

Rhymetimes and storytimes

the charm of storytelling

T

at 11am and 11:30am

he most fascinating and nourishing stories for children, are the fairy tales of the oral tradition, because they are rich with the dark issues of life, death, and all that we struggle with... ourselves, others, and the wildness of nature with its rising tides, and merciless storms.

Cottenham: Rhymetime (birth to 18 months), Thursdays, 2pm-2:30pm (term-time only), N.B. New time from 13 January 2011: 2.30pm-3.00pm

Watching the characters play out their good and evil roles, and identifying with them all, the child discovers that it is only with the warm heart of the hero

Most libraries have a Rhymetime or a storytime. These sessions are free and no advance booking is needed, unless stated otherwise. Rhymetimes are usually aimed at babies and toddlers (0-18 months) and Storytimes are aimed at children aged 18 months+ who are happy to sit and listen to stories. These stories, with their clear but secret messages, give him a stable and profound intelligence of the emotions. Their inherent optimism, reassuring him that it will all end happily ever after, inspires him to believe that he can overcome his own life’s difficulties, and find a rout to happiness. Reading or telling these stories to our children, will create that safe connection, where those child questions lie quietly, yearning to be answered by a caring adult... even if it is only to admit that even grownups don’t know it all. P

lay grows healthy children. It is while playing with our children that they build up their knowledge and understanding of the world. In playing children learn to share, develop their imagination, increase their communication, try out new skills and develop relationships. They begin to understand themselves and others.

Some ideas on how to get the best from Play -

** Follow your child’s lead but make sure the game is safe, don’t allow it to get out of control.

** Play with the child but don’t take over, let the child change the game. ** Listen but don’t tell what to do. ** Talk about what the child is doing and encourage, eg. “It looks like the spaceman wants to rule the world. What are the people going to do?”

** Allow plenty of time. ** Allow for experimenting and mistakes. ** Don’t compete with young children; this can discourage them from wanting to play with you.

** Appreciate and encourage your children’s effort, eg. display their works of art.

T

he Queen of stories is an experienced primary teacher and professional storyteller, enthralling with her carefully adapted stories of the oral tradition – the most enriching of all stories for children. These magical fairy tales are rarely known, and the skill of storytelling is becoming a dying art, but the Queen of Stories, works to change this. She has designed the colourful Storytelling Awards Scheme, to support literacy especially boy’s writing, oracy, self confidence, interpersonal skills, powers of communication, imagination, and empathy... The Awards’ concept is simple and workable, to fit timetables, with ease for busy staff. 2011 is ‘National Year of Communication’, making children’s speech and language a priority in homes and schools across the country. What better way to learn these skills, than to hear and tell a story of enchantment? To arrange a free Story Session and Awards presentation for your school, contact Jenny Connatty:

Free vitamins If you’re pregnant or have a child under four and you’re claiming some benefits or tax credits you could get vouchers to spend on milk, fruit and veg - and a coupon for vitamins - absolutely free!

For more information on the Healthy Start scheme and to find out if you may be eligible, ask your midwife or health visitor or search Healthy Start on line at www.cambridgeshire.nhs.uk

Healthy Start Vouchers Help Reduce Food Bills

Healthy Start Vouchers Help Reduce Food Bills The Healthy Start scheme is to improve the health of pregnant women and families with children under four years old. Those eligible can receive vouchers which can be exchanged for free fresh fruit, vegetables, milk and vitamins. We spoke to the Stoneman family from Cambridgeshire who told us about the scheme and how it has benefitted their family.

taking part in the scheme, and those stores taking part have a sticker in their window. You can also find your nearest store by entering your postcode online at www.healthystart.nhs.uk . Occasionally staff were unaware of the vouchers and I also found that I could not use them at self service check-outs, but most of the time it was easy.

How did you find out about Healthy Start?

What about the vitamins? How did you find out where to get them? A voucher for the vitamins comes in the post every 8 weeks. I was unaware of the importance of the vitamins so did not claim them at first, but once my midwife explained the benefits and that there was a voucher that I could use to get free vitamins, I decided to try them. I was not sure where to exchange my vitamin voucher but have since found out that they are available from some pharmacists and also in the Children’s Centres. Would you tell friends and family about Healthy Start? Yes, because I found the voucher made a big difference to us as a low income family and helped us to buy fresh fruit and vegetables. It is also really good to be able to get the free vitamins for the children and for me when I was pregnant, as it can be expensive and confusing knowing which ones you need and what to look for.

From the leaflet in the pregnancy pack. There was a lot of information there, however the Healthy Start leaflet stated free voucher. It was the word “free” that really grabbed my attention and I asked my midwife for the application form so I could apply for the vouchers. The form was easy to complete but needs to be signed by the midwife, health visitor or doctor. How much are the vouchers worth and what can they be used for? The food vouchers come through the post and are worth £3.10 each per week, so when I was pregnant I received £12.40 every 4 weeks for myself and £12.40 for my toddler as well as the vitamin coupons. The vouchers can be used for any fresh fruit and vegetables as well as milk and there are also recipe ideas available on the healthy start website. Where did you swap the vouchers and was it easy? Food vouchers can be swapped in local shops and supermarkets

For more information about Healthy Start ask your health visitor, midwife or at your local children’s centre or go to www.cambridgeshire.nhs.uk

The SMILE Fund The SMILE Fund is a not for profit organisation founded by Christine Charters-Young who runs the locally-based Healing House for Health & Well Being. Its aim is to offer complementary therapies to those who would benefit from, but cannot afford the treatments.

Desperate to help Ellie, her family sought out Christine and almost as

soon as the first reflexology treatment had taken place, things started to improve. “There was an improvement almost immediately and that not only helped Ellie physically, but resulted in her gaining more confidence. Gradually the problem got better and Ellie was so happy. The treatment Ellie received from Christine was honestly like a miracle,” added Mum Kim.

The inspiration for the Smile Fund came from seven year-old Ellie Cross from Newmarket, who first started visiting Christine when she was just five years old. Ellie suffered from chronic constipation and had been seen by consultants in hospital since she was two, but apart from giving her medication to ease the problem, there seemed to be nothing else that could be done for her.

Saffron Walden

“ By gently manipulating the body we can bring about relief of symptoms for the patients and help improve quality of life for the parents.”

Inspired by Ellie’s recovery, Christine wants to make sure that every child in need has full access to therapies that will help their recovery and has launched The Smile Fund. She said: “My overriding passion and goal is to ensure that all people are supported in trying to achieve optimum health.” If you would like to make a donation to The Smile Fund or have some fund raising ideas, please contact Christine for more information on 01223 654552 or email healing-house@uwclub.net.

Play area caters for children of all ages and is based on a railway theme, younger children can play on the railway engine itself with its wagon, a mini roundabout, spring tractor, cradle seat swings, and agility climber, while the older children can use up their energies on the net climber, group swing or slide.

Lammas Land For young children there are springys and toner units, for older children a space net, climbers, swings, and a toner climber. There is also a large shallow paddling pool. Large areas of mown grass are ideal for picnics and sun bathing.
