New schools: taking the leap of faith Natalie Evans, director of New Schools Network, discusses the growth and increasing popularity of free schools, and how they are addressing the need for new primary school places As primary school choice day looms (forms have to be in by January 15th) parents across the country are weighing up their options and deciding which school will be the right choice for their child – where will they be happiest and get the best education for the next seven years? Picking that first choice is a daunting decision, even more so if it is a new school. Many parents have told me about the leap of faith needed to decide to send your child to a new school that lacks the traditional track record to help guide you; but more tell me how excited they are about having a new, and hopefully better option available to their child. There are now over 350 new free schools open or approved to open across the country and, with nearly a quarter of those that have been inspected so far being judged Outstanding, it’s unsurprising that more and more parents see these schools as their preferred option. In North London of course the challenge of space in primary schools is unparalleled. By September 2015, the boroughs of Hackney, Islington, Camden, Haringey, Barnet and Enfield alone will need 2,160 new primary places. Perhaps even more worryingly: last year an average of 1 in 5 primary pupils were not offered their first choice of school. It is hardly surprising then that new ‘free’ schools have been embraced

by parents in North London. There are currently 32 free schools open or approved across North London, including 27 mainstream schools; two special schools (for children with special educational needs), and three alternative provision schools for pupils who struggle in mainstream schools. Once all these schools are open and full they will have created 18,979 school places including 5,852 much needed mainstream primary places across 17 schools. The fact is that, despite their newness, free schools have to put parents at their heart. The groups that set up free schools are led by parents, teachers, community groups, charities and existing schools but whoever they are they must have educational expertise and must show that they are both wanted and needed by local parents. Parents are the driving force behind every new school. In a recent survey, NSN discovered that 87% of parents in London would welcome the chance to have a new school in their area and 79% would consider sending their child to a free school if one opened locally, compared to 73% nationally. As you get ready to fill in that primary school form I would say to any parent: consider taking that leap of faith – ask yourself if a new school could be the right choice for you and find out more about them.

Snapshot: Free schools in North London Abacus Belsize Primary School is a primary school for 4-11 year olds in Camden. The school, which opened in 2013, was established by a group of parents to help meet the local need for school places and will serve 210 pupils when full, focussing on English and Mathematics and incorporating Mandarin as well as outdoor learning. St Luke’s Church of England Primary School in Camden, was the first Church of England free school to open in the country and was established to help meet the shortage of primary school places. The school opened in 2011 and welcomes families from all faiths and backgrounds. Ofsted has recently rated the school as ‘Good’, and it is oversubscribed by seven times for their September 2015 intake. Eden Primary School in Haringey is an inclusive Jewish primary provision, which opened in 2011 in Haringey, London. The school, which recently received a ‘Good’ by Ofsted, has an ethos that ‘everyone is welcome’, and teaches pupils from all religious backgrounds and none. Their vision encompasses a love of learning, celebration of diversity and respect for the environment. Whitehall Park School is a new primary school in Islington which opened this year. The school will grow to serve 420 children at capacity and will focus on high academic attainment and believe that children learn best when they are happy and excited by what’s happening in the classroom.

Parent’s guide to independent schools (4-13 years) By Hannah Hunter

We all want to give our children the best start in their educational life. If you can afford it, the independent sector provides an alternative to the state system, which can often operate like a postcode lottery. An increasing number of parents are looking at the independent sector – a report from the Association of Teachers and Lecturers shows numbers rising at their fastest rate since 2008. A variety of independent schools An independent school is a school that is free to operate outside of many of the rules and regulations of the state system (there are, of course, statutory education, health and safety standards). Independent schools are also fee-paying, and governed by an elected board. Within the umbrella term of ‘independent’, you will find an array of different types of schools. Pre-prep is the name sometimes given to schools which cater for infant-aged children (4-7), that usually are feeder schools for a prep (preparatory) school (for 8-13 year-olds, and sometimes younger). The preparatory school takes its name from its original function of preparing pupils for entrance to senior schools. This might be a ‘public’ school – the older private schools, whose name derives from the fact that they are open to the public (providing they can pay the fees of course!).

Your first port of call should be the government’s database of all UK schools, which allows you to search by area and type (private or state funded).

You will also find different kinds of Independent schools that will cater for infant and junior-aged children. These include schools with different learning styles, such as Montessori schools (often for younger children) and Steiner schools. Why choose an independent school? Independent schools can offer smaller class sizes, meaning more time for one-to-one attention, helpful for children with learning difficulties or other additional needs. Teachers have time to challenge more able children – prep schools often have specific gifted programmes. Their better working conditions, with more resources and higher salaries, mean that independent schools can attract the best teachers. There is also a higher staff to pupil ratio, on average about 1:10 (it’s around 1:20 at state primaries), giving staff and pupils more time to get to know one another. If you’re looking at an independent secondary school, a pre-prep will ensure that your child gets the best out of their common entrance exam (necessary in getting a scholarship or bursary). In grammar schools areas, these schools may also offer preparation for the 11+. It’s not just the academic kids who will benefit from what a prep school offers. Sport is taken very seriously, and they will offer a wide range, from rugby to badminton. They also cater for other interests, offering a variety of extracurricular activities, such as dance, drama and music, which might not be able to access in the state system.

waiting list; try not to deliver in July/ August – places are likely to have been nabbed by autumn births.’ Expect an interview, even for early years places – this is likely to involve some sort of assessment of basic speech, interaction and social skills. By age 7 or 8 you might expect a test of Maths and English ability, with possibly an IQ test. This could be accompanied by a school visit, to assess how your child will be placed at the school. As with any school, you should make appointments to visit the school and check their inspection reports (these may be delivered by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, or Ofsted).

How to find a school Your first port of call should be the government’s database of all UK schools, which allows you to search by area and type (private or state funded). You might want to look at this early on – according to the Good Schools Guide, getting a place can be cut-throat: ‘For a small number of schools (mostly in or near to London) the only way to gain a place is to register your child’s birth then head straight to the school and etch their name on the

Secondary Schools By Lorrae Jaderberg and Katie Krais

Choosing the right secondary school for your child may be a challenge you feel ill-prepared for. How do you know which secondary school to choose? Would your child pass the state selective secondary school 11+ exams and, more importantly, be happy at school? This question is critical when considering the state selective secondary school options for your child. Are all children suitable for state selective secondary schools? Definitely not. It’s an incredibly challenging exam and journey to attempt. For the right child, it’s a dream come true: life changing. For the wrong child, a potential disaster; a harmful exercise which may result in lowered self-esteem and feelings of failure for a lifetime. The only way to approach this is to know precisely how suitable your child may, or may not be. Start by asking for your child’s current and predicted national curriculum levels in maths and English at school. To really be sure, have an independent assessment which measures not only current achievement, but your child’s academic future potential as well. If your child has the potential to pass these exams, then learning the curriculum and the exam strategies should follow fairly easily with some effort and commitment by both parent and child. So, how bright does your child need to be to gain a place at a state selective secondary school? They need a high level of reasoning ability, to solve complex multi-tiered problems quickly and accurately. They need a high standard at maths and English and able to work quickly and accurately in both subjects. One parent’s idea of ‘high level’ may be quite different

to another’s, and similarly being on the ‘top table’ in one primary school for maths and English, may not equate with another primary school; it will depend on the cohort of children in the year group. Looking at it from the very bright child’s perspective, they will find maths and English relatively easy and seem to do very well, always near the top of the class each year. They are likely to be assessed to be in the top 25% of children for ability. They are likely to need some light tutoring before sitting these exams as the exams are demanding and tutoring preparation makes it less stressful for both the child and their parents. This also ensures correct coverage of the maths and English curriculum to be tested in September of Year 6. During Year 5, it is unlikely your child will have covered the areas to be examined in sufficient range or depth for the 11+ exams. Verbal and non-verbal reasoning strategies may also be needed, similarly mathematical reasoning strategies and finding missing vocabulary words in context. Timing will need to be practised; working at a speed at 30 seconds a question and being able to process fast auditory instructions accurately are also being tested, combined with curriculum knowledge and methods. From the bright child’s perspective, the exams should feel manageable and exciting, a welcome challenge; almost game-like. So the question for parents is not just about which schools to choose, but also how do you know if your child would be successful long term with this choice? Not just to pass the exam – but to be happy, to thrive and flourish long term in an environment that should be as near to perfect for them as possible. Think long term happiness, rather than short term gain. Your child’s happiness has to be the most important factor.

familiesnorth.co.uk

A naturally clever child in the top 5% will be happy in a state selective school if it is right for them culturally, and they pass the entrance exam comfortably. A child in the top 25% at the lower end, may be happier in their local state secondary school in the top sets working at their own pace without the unrealistic pressures they might have faced. In the end, these children will sit the same GCSEs and A Levels and have the same opportunities to go to the same universities. Providing the teaching in school is excellent, and the personal aspirations of the student are realistic and ambitious, your child should fulfil their potential, whichever school they attend. With your realism, support and belief behind them, they will always be a winner. Jaderberg Krais offer educational advice, assessments and tutoring for all children, including the 11+. Remove the roadblocks and achieve those New Year’s resolutions

HEALTH & HAPPINESS

By Lyndon Littlefair

Yes, it’s that time of the year again. It is January! Christmas is over, all of the silly season parties are finished, and yes those New Year’s resolutions that seemed so good at 2am in the morning on 1st January have to start now. If you are like most people, the reality is always the hardest thing to put into practice. Of course then there are all the excuses. And believe me, in 20 years working in this industry, I have heard some great ones. • N o Time. This is always the classic. The thing is, there is always time you just have to look at how much time you do have available and then break down what you need to do. For example, try breaking your workout down into 10 minutes per day. Choose two or three exercises per day and make up three different mini programmes. If you did this six days per week, then you have done the programme twice each week. I’m sure that you could find 10 minutes a day. • N o Motivation. If this is the case, then sit down and be honest with yourself. How much do you want to achieve your goals? Is the desire for change bigger than the current situation? Be honest with yourself and write down why you want to achieve your specific goals. Then start! The hardest thing about starting any is that first step. But you can do it! • N one of my friends exercise. Then start to surround yourself with likeminded people who do. Join a running club. Do an exercise class. Dare to be different and work out why you want to achieve your goals. • I don’t know where to start. The thing is, you wouldn’t try to fix your car

12

yourself if it broke down. Or take apart your computer if you didn’t have the skills. Find someone who is an expert to help you. Look at the skills that you would need to help you along your way and seek out and find someone with those specific skills. • W ork always gets in my way. Then prioritise your goals. No, I’m not saying quit work, but learn to say no when the boss wants everything finished yesterday. Also, be strict with yourself and say ‘this is my time to exercise’ and just work around everything else. Otherwise you will never find the time.

But it is true. Don’t just try to do something next week. Put a date in the diary and ‘just do it’ as Nike says. Now if you are reading this and any of these sound familiar, then you are not alone. Many people make New Year resolutions, especially after one too many. Don’t be one of these people. Make and plan, stick to it and this time next year you can pat yourself on the back and say well done.

• I will ‘try’ to start next week. There is an old saying ‘there is no trying just doing’. Actually Yoda says this one.

If you are like most people, the reality is always the hardest thing to put into practice. Of course then there are all the excuses.

The Royal Babysitters

by Clémentine Beauvais (Bloomsbury £5.99)

The Eager Elephant

by Amelia Cobb (Nosy Crow £4.99)

Ed says: ‘Zoe knows how lucky she is living at the Rescue Zoo where her mother works and she also has a special secret – she can understand the animals’ growls and grunts and talk back to them. There is huge excitement when Zoe’s great-uncle arrives home from Africa with a crate containing a baby elephant. Zoe enthusiastically follows Bertie’s progress but when Bertie finds himself in danger will Zoe and her animal friends be able to rescue him? ‘This is a lovely story for animallovers with more exciting adventures in the series. It is ideal for newly-confident readers or for reading together.’

Ed says: ‘When Holly and Anna read about an intergalactic holiday of a lifetime they absolutely have to go on, they decide they will have to get a job to pay for it. They soon talk themselves into being royal babysitters for a day but they are in for a shock when they realise there are six princes to be looked after – and an invasion to repel. Will the girls be able to survive the dangers and problems hurled at them during this crazy day of princesitting? ‘Here is a madcap adventure to delight both boys and girls. The story is complemented throughout with fantastic illustrations.’

For ages 7 years PLUS

Terror Town

by Marcus Sedgwick (Orion £6.99)

with while attempting to complete their mission. ‘This is a fantastic story and a real pageturner of a book. If you enjoy it as much as I did you will want to look out for the next part of Elf Girl and Raven Boy’s travels.’

Mountwood School for Ghosts by Toby Ibbotson (Macmillan £12.99)

Ed says: ‘Ghosts aren’t what they used to be, according to one 473 year old teacher! So she and her spectral friends set up Mountwood School for Ghosts to promote excellence in haunting. Two young humans Daniel and Charlotte meet the likeable ghost Percy and when they realise that problems in their neighbourhood (created by humans) are seemingly insuperable they enlist the help of the phantoms of Mountwood. This is a thrilling and imaginativelywritten story that will have you on the edge of your seat. It is action-packed and full of humour.’

Ed says: ‘Elf Girl and Raven Boy, along with their friend Rat, are speeding across hills and fields on a magic flying carpet towards Terror Town. They have the Tears of the Moon but they must find the Singing Sword in order to save the world from the Goblin King. Zombies and werewolves are roaming the streets of Terror Town but there are also other scary things – and people – to contend
