felipe romero university of illinois at chicago _school of architecture content reaching striations: highbridge park _international ideas competition transformation of the plane _pro-portions visitor center for the farnsworth house blending interiors[building] & exteriors[landscape] _water taxi wolfpoint shift _atelier and gallery 1712 s. halsted professional work [model] _wheeler kearns architects reaching striations: highbridge park semester: fall 2009 instructor: deborah fausch given the freedom to redesign the highbridge park in manhattan and the bronx, new york with the focus of an arts incubator; i began to question the site in reference to the research. the brief did not address the real issue therefore i proposed what was needed for the site to solve the separation of both cities and bring them together. the final concept then dealt with the identity issue of both manhattan and the bronx. manhattan presented a separation between landscape and urban fabric, which i proposed to extend the park into the city and the city into the park. the bronx offered an undefined landscape where built forms rested, i then suggested that more building forms be added which began to define the landscape. RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS 1 1 1 4 1 A C C D C site in relationship to body of water. separation of land masses: manhattan vs. the bronx. two different identities formed by grid systems. green spaces are connected with a single pedestrian connection infrastructure connection and public transportation system serve the site as an accessible park for the rest of new york. THE BRONX IDENTITY defined city fabric. city fabric sits adjacent to landscape [clear separation between built form and landscape. landscape reaches into the defined city to redefine open space. undefined landscape. built forms sit on the undefined landscape. the addition of built forms begins to define and form the landscape. DEVELOPMENT PHASE OUTLINE outdoor atmosphere: entertainment hub outdoor atmosphere: relaxation mounds N EXPERIENTIAL LANDSCAPE ENVIRONMENT forest marsh skate museum prairie beach mountain moonscape transformation of the plane semester: spring 2010 instructor: dan wheeler given the issue of a small and sub programmed visitor center for one of the mecca's in architecture of 20th century, the issue would then become a conversation of a visitor center that could over whelm or under whelm the farnsworth house. with that said, my proposal would take on a visitor center that is over twice the size of the weekend get away house and departing from it but maintaining a reference to it. this lead to a design of a visitor center that could be another great building of the 21st century. dining wc patio kitchen mechanical wc bed room office living room patio parallel planes orthogonal cores exposed structure on skin fluid program circulation patio meeting room library work space video room gallery executive office projector nature well gallery gallery reception cashier storage cashier fountains sinks mechanical gallery shop cafe squeezed & penetrated planes ameba cores hidden structure by skin sinks WCs patio separate programs & multiple circulation paths pond mound lifting, lowering ground plane & creation of constant planes circular cores exposed natural structure special event mound pond flexible program & circulation 5 0 10 20 50 view from parking: arrival to the visitor center view of the open gallery upon entering visitor center view into shop view into video room view after returning from the farnsworth house blending interiors [building] & exteriors [landscape] semester: fall 2008 instructor: iker gil given the program to design a new water taxi station situated in wolf point (where the chicago river splits to the north and south branch) was a neglected site. with the lack of public recreational area, this new water taxi station is designed to revive the site and absorb pedestrians from the sidewalk down to the docks. therefore the concept deals with the blending of interior and exteior spaces, though i felt it was not enough. i then sprinkled the site with "rubber goosebumps" and allow for more public interaction and freedom to be programmed by the public and act as a performance space to serve more than just a water taxi station. water: 45% open space: 15% built: 40% within a 3 mile � area OR ORLEANS ST. CANAL ST. the river's edge surrounds the site but does not interact. site is not connected to the existing public transportation system. CANAL ST ST. CANAL ST. the site only has three accessible entrances for its city public. the site is separated from the chicago river walk system. the new street edge is redefined to expand into the site and allow for unlimited access points. proposal to expand the site and be part of the chicago river walk system. SPECIAL PROGRAM POTENTIAL the landscape is sprinkled with rubber seats that come out or cave into the ground. in some special moments a hole occurs where glass is placed on top and bottom and serves as a club lighting for the wolf point night live that will be generated. along the same method of sprinkling, vertical elements occur. tree planter light post for night live floor/ceiling light individual hole business break meeting relaxation mound karate mound break dancing mound floor/ceiling purple light subject inside hole group seating standing on mound mound serves as ramp mound for jumping floor/ceiling orange light feet inside hole toddler inside hole couple on top of mound single mound seat yoga mound floor/ceiling green light 0' 20' 60' 120' shift semester: fall 2007 instructor: deborah fausch the atelier/gallery was an infill mix-use structure for a famous fashion designer that were to integrate into the pilsen art district. the idea was to design a structure that expressed their style of work. my designers were dolce and gabbana and what i translated from their style of work to the structure was patterning and stitching of different patterns to create a whole outfit. i also expressed the way in which they perform their runways shows and their interest in them being interior or exterior and wanting to be close to the public because at the end they are the consumers.
