EYNSHAM

Council & Community Issue 9 – October - November 2014

NEWS

The aptly-named Eynsham Challenger ushers in another autumn – and a wealth of opportunities

It’s good to be back – whatever the ups and downs of summer 2014 – to catch up on friends and neighbours and pick up the old routine.

In this issue

Our kind contributors have done us proud again and our What’s On pages are packed with offers from local groups. 18 October warrants special mention, for GreenTEA Fruit Festival, Rotary Race Night and a WW1 exhibition with the History Group.

There are a dozen ways of helping out as well – on a regular or one-off basis (pages 7, 8, 12, 13). Why not pick up the phone, or turn up at a meeting, and see what’s going on? 1

In brief

Graveyard closure

Eynsham has a new Oxford to Witney and Carterton bus service. The S7 was started by Stagecoach in July to link West Oxfordshire with Brookes University in Headington and the John Radcliffe Hospital. However, because of traffic congestion at the JR bus terminal, the new service will only go as far as Headley Way. It follows the S2 route from Carterton and Witney with stops at the Evenlode and Cassington on the A40, starting and finishing in Oxford at Gloucester Green. Currently the service is only running during the day Monday to Friday, except bank holidays, but Stagecoach says it could increase the service if there is enough demand.

The churchyard at St Leonard’s Church has been filling steadily over recent years, there are now only 12 non-reserved spaces left. In considering the situation at its meeting in June, St Leonard’s Parochial Church Council reluctantly took the decision that it would have to apply for the new section of the churchyard to be closed to new burials. Application will therefore be made to the Ministry of Justice to close the churchyard as it will be full within less than a year. The new churchyard will continue to be open to receive burials on reserved plots, and in some cases for family graves, and will also be open for the interment of ashes and burial of cremated remains. Responsibility for the churchyard will pass briefly to Eynsham Parish Council and then to West Oxfordshire District Council, who will also then be responsible for providing a site for burials, which is likely to be outside the village. Eynsham Parish Council have had some funds available and have been searching for a new site in the village for some time, without success so far. The old part of the churchyard will remain open for the present, whilst opinions are sought from residents about the possibility of overburial on existing graves and investigation into available funding for this. If you have any views on this issue please write to the PCC Secretary, 21 High Street, Eynsham by the end of December 2014 so that the Parochial Church Council can take your views into consideration.

Seasonal flu clinics start on Saturday 27 September, with further Saturday clinics on 4 and 11 October and an evening clinic on Thursday 9 October. Please make an appointment on 01865 881206 if you fall into any of the following categories: • You are aged 65 years and over • Have asthma and are on regular inhaled steroids • Have heart disease • Are diabetic • Have a kidney problem • Have a liver problem • Have had a stroke • Have an illness or are taking medicine that lowers the natural immune system.

A rum affair

Early to bed, early to rise: we were all up by 7.30! The sound of rain, now lighter, on the roof still. Breakfasts made, one or two went looking for wildlife. Frank, Richard and I found our fishing rods. We hadn’t carried them from Eynsham to leave them unused. We failed to get a cast by the sea so took to spinning small lures in a brook in the hope of trout. The hope came good – a total catch of 17! – and the best three made a good starter for dinner. And evening arrived with beautiful sunshine at last. Paul had seen a golden eagle. We also spotted a porpoise in the bay and a sea eagle out to sea. A warmer, drier night and clear sunny morning followed. Deer were all around the bothy, one quite un-fazed by my approach, only flinching when I went to touch its forehead. We split into groups again for the return to Kinloch. Five of us took in Sir George Bullough’s mausoleum: an impressive structure, if rather incongrous here. We met up at the bunkhouse in late afternoon, having checked out the island shop. The last day featured a tour of Kinloch castle, Sir George’s amazing creation. Every newfangled device available in Victorian Britain was fitted: showers with multi-directional heads, the only electric system outside of mainland cities, a full orchestrion. If you fancy a touch of something wild, the Isle of Rum is well worth a visit. If you want to hear more, buy any of us a glass and I’m sure you’ll loosen our tongues.

Alan Craft recalls a trip to the inner Hebrides, hatched over a beer in the pub and sustained by a bottle or three Last May eight of us Eynsham menfolk took the ferry across to the Isle of Rum, south of Skye. It has a population of about 22, pretty much all in Kinloch, and mountains rising to over 800m from sea level. Having booked for two nights in the wild and one in a comfortable bunkhouse, we shouldered back packs, or in one case saddled up a bicycle, and set off toward the far side of the island. And toward some dark clouds coming in, suggesting wet weather gear should be somewhere handy. The scenery became wilder as we walked west, the clouds getting lower and darker too. Two thirds of the way, along little more than deer tracks, the rain proper started. The bike was locked up and abandoned and we wet geared up and headed on into gradually worsening weather, with thoughts on the Guirdhil bothy somewhere ahead. In case you don’t know, a bothy is a basic (sometimes very basic) shelter. This one was dry enough, had a cooking area and might be a beautiful spot if the rain cleared. We made a mug of tea and decided a little rum would help warm and dry us. By the time we were all tucked into sleeping bags a number of empty bottles could be seen around.

Footpaths

Sue Osborne – Chair, Footpaths Committee Following input from a local resident, the step up onto the footbridge in the southeast corner of the south playing field, where footpath 206/2 meets the B4449, has been removed as it was beginning to slope and become hazardous in wet weather. The County Council (OCC) apologises for any inconvenience which might be caused by its temporary absence: they hope to replace it with a new step by the beginning of November. In the meantime, please take extra care ascending or descending the bridge. Despite the hard work put in by the Parish Council – and yourselves – we still have no further news about the “lost” footpath (part of 206/10). We are trying hard to make progress but, so far, have been unable to elicit a response from the landowner. As you may know, a law has been introduced under which all historic footpaths and bridleways not recorded on the definitive map by 2026 will be extinguished. We really do not want that to happen on what was once a designated circular walk, so we will keep trying. As regular readers will know, every footpath and bridleway in the parish is walked by members of the Footpaths Committee every two years. We send our findings (obstacles, ploughed-over paths, broken stiles or gates, excessive undergrowth, etc.) on a spreadsheet to OCC Countryside Service team for action. We hope to submit this year’s completed spreadsheet in early autumn. As always, we appreciate any feedback, positive or negative, from the walkers amongst you; and will endeavour to get any problems resolved as soon as possible. We’re delighted to see on page 9 that Wharf Stream Way is developing apace. Enjoy your walks!

Cllr Verity Hughes reports on the tenth anniversary celebration for Eynsham Abbey Fishponds on 18 July. One unexpected event saw Grace McKenny, Kevin McKenney, Robin and Jonathan charm 26 worms from the soil. The end was rather chaotic so we’re not sure who came second or third! Image © Peter Emery The day and evening proved a great success, thanks to willing help and wonderful weather – the pictures speak for themselves. You’ll find them on our website at http://tinyurl.com/eynsham-fishponds-foray I could make a very long list of all the people who have supported this project over the last ten years and who helped make this a memorable day but they know who they are and I just might miss someone out. However I have to mention the Wychwood Project, who have always been there in the background guiding us on what we might do and how to go about it. I would also like to thank Eynsham Post Office, EHS, Co-op, Crackerjax and Evenlode DIY for their contributions to the day; and the Community Payback Team who strimmed the paths on a very hot day earlier in the week. The experts will be completing their surveys over the next couple of months and they will be available on the website. From these final reports we will form a management plan for the next ten years. John Richards filmed the day and when his editing is complete we will have a link from Eynsham Online so that everyone can view it.

Grass cutting

Richard Andrews – Parish Council Vice-Chairman Feelings ran high earlier in the year about the state of roadside verges – and weeds in gutters and pavements. H owe ve r, there has been minimal support for raising the parish precept to allow additional treatments. The Council will therefore consider how best to operate next year without increasing the budget.

In brief BROADBAND: Cllr Paul Wilding has another progress report on the big green cabinets bringing ‘next generation’ fibre broadband to Eynsham. You’ll find it at Eynsham Online www.eynsham-pc.gov.uk NOTICE BOARDS: The public boards have generous space for local groups to share. If your poster is more than half the size of this page it may be removed... GRANTS FOR GROUPS: On 18 November the Parish Council will consider local awards for year 2015/6. Please contact the Clerk Rachel Faulkner for an application form: 07956 901622.

Planning

Dennis Stukenbroeker – Chair, Planning Committee The Parish Council has objected to an application by JA Pye (Oxford) Ltd to build 21 houses on land to west of Fruitlands. It pointed out that there was no support from villagers; the land was designated as public open space under conditions for existing homes at Fruitlands; WODC’s Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment says the site is not suitable for housing; and allowing homes to be built would set an undesirable precedent for that part of the village (Application 14/1009/P/OP). While local residents cannot stop further development, they may have a say on its type and location if they draw up and adopt a neighbourhood plan. Such a plan needs to involve residents, businesses, schools and community organizations, so the Parish Council needs your views before it can start the process. Please write in by 30 September, saying how you would like to get involved if you are in favour.

The Parish Council is looking for two new members, announces Chairman Gordon Beach. Please consider joining and help to spread the work around – it could really make a difference to the village. If you are interested, send a short letter or email to the Clerk by the end of September. This should include a potted history of your time here, a note of any groups you are involved in and any skills you feel would be helpful and your particular reasons for wishing to join the Council. We hope to co-opt both new members at our meeting on 7 October. For any additional information please feel free to ring or email. Your Parish Council contacts are listed on page 5.

Community governors Preparing our young people for the future

Bartholomew School has two vacancies for governors from the community. We are an academy rated outstanding by Ofsted last year and we have recently formed a multi academy trust with our feeder primary schools in Eynsham, Long Hanborough, Freeland, Cassington, Stanton Harcourt and Standlake. The EPA (Eynsham Partnership Academy) came into being on 1 June 2014. As a governor you would work as part of a team for up to four years, the term of office. There are 5–6 full governing body meetings per academic year but all governors are also required to join one of three committees which meet termly, i.e. six times a year. We are not looking for any particular skills set at the moment, as we are fortunate to have a range of experience and expertise, but we try to keep a broad balance within the governing body. Being a governor is very interesting and rewarding as well as time-consuming and occasionally challenging. If you would like to know more, please contact Mrs Beth Bedford, Clerk to Governors at the school (01865 881430 ext 203) or get in touch with the chair of governors, Jane Osborne: 01865 464165.

Recycling reminder

You asked about... District & Parish Councillor Peter Emery

The free banks at Eynsham Back Lane car park are for excess waste that will not fit in your recycling boxes. Please do not leave any waste on the floor at these sites. If you leave recycling or other waste lying around the banks this is classified as fly-tipping. Fly-tipping of commercial or household waste is illegal and offenders will be prosecuted.

Wharf Stream Way At our first ‘surgery’ on 6 August, a resident raised the subject of a particularly noisy small plane that was making regular flights across the village. I took this up with RAF Brize Norton and the ever-helpful Flying Complaints Officer, Flight Lieutenant Dave Howell, agreed to investigate. Apparently the Shorts Skyvan type aircraft that has been irritating the village is indeed flying from Brize and is flown by a Belgian gentleman. Flt Lt Howell has spoken to the pilot, who has agreed to avoid overflying Eynsham in future. Please let me know if the pilot gets a bit cavalier with his height, and noise, in future.

An update from Heather McCulloch of WODC. Above, a ‘like-for-like’ replacement bridge supplied by OCC; image © Peter Emery We’re thrilled that things have begun to be seen on the ground now, with a new bridge installed at the Wharf Stream itself and a new field gate and pedestrian gate – allowing easy manual wheelchair and standard pushchair access – at the entrance opposite Hazeldene Close, beside the B4449. Following a meeting with Hazeldene Close residents, attended by Sue and Peter from the Parish Council, it looks like full steam ahead with installing Jane Tomlinson’s interpretation panel on site close to the edge of the Bitterell footpath. The fabricator of the interpretation panels has been agreed and both panels will be installed as soon as they are ready. We have been reviewing designs for waymarkers which came in following a village wide competition. Two strong designs met the brief but whilst we’ve confirmed one we are still discussing the other. These drawings will go to a carver to be made into bespoke waymarkers. We may come back and commission a third at a later date. In the autumn we should be putting up owl boxes; clearing further scrub near the allotments to (we hope) make space for Eynsham apple trees; and putting in waymarkers and seating.

More steps led up to the kitchen to the left of the house. A frequent visitor, who lumbered her way up them, seeking titbits from our own dog’s provisions, was Charles and Pam Caine’s grossly obese black labrador (Sophie?) on her morning free-range perambulation of the village. To enter the rear garden one passed under a reconstructed ogee archway from Eynsham Abbey (now, I think, removed to the church). At one stage we realised that the topmost stone was simply resting, unattached, on top! Other carved stonework was also there.

The rear garden was mainly grass with substantial vegetable and flower beds, bounded by Conduit Lane, the furniture warehouse, and at the back a brick wall separating us from the brand new clinic (built on land that until the 1970s was part of the Vicarage glebe). A very rare feather-leafed beech tree (with conservation order still, I hope, in place) overhung the garden on the Conduit Lane side. It was a good garden for children and for the occasional garden party or church fête.

Work in progress

• We have planted a small mixed orchard, including some old Eynsham apple varieties, in the northeast corner and aim to grow a few vegetables if we can overcome the problem of the Muntjac deer, which are very destructive. • Along the north/south boundary fence we have planted a native mixed hedgerow to encourage birds, hedgehogs and the like. • Around the field edges we have planted more trees to increase woodland habitats. • Elsewhere we are encouraging wildflowers and nettle patches for bees & butterflies and grasses for hay, with paths mown through for access. • At some point we hope to put up a small field shelter/barn. We found the Holewelle, in a dip in the middle of the field, in a sorry state. The spring feeds fresh water to the Fishponds and was first used as such by monks in the early 13th century. Old maps show a stream and a second pond at the bottom of the field but these have been filled in. We had hoped to find a clear natural pool at the spring site. Instead it was an overgrown bog area, with the spring water confined in two crumbling concrete tanks. A great deal of farm & building rubbish has been dumped around it. We have been gradually clearing the mud and rubbish and finding more concrete and underground pipes. We have cleaned the area and cleared pipes leading down to the Fishponds. We have made a temporary retaining bank and seeded it with wildflowers to protect the fresh water from further silting up. We need to clear more silt and rubbish and investigate where and how the water rises. We are very keen not to destroy any possible archaeology so are working slowly and carefully. Have Eynsham residents any knowledge of the spring before it was put into the concrete tanks, or the lower pond and stream that have disappeared? We’d be very interested in any information about the field or the farm in general – please email parrinderp@yahoo.com

Posy Parrinder reports from the Holewelle – with Steve Parrinder & David Rivalin We live at Abbey Farm overlooking the Fishponds in one of the barn conversions. We also were lucky enough to be able to buy part of the field to the south. It includes the Holewelle – a natural spring or “well” that has formed a hollow in the hillside. The rest of the field between Abbey Farm and Station Road is not ours. Our motivation in acquiring the land was to protect it from any further development and preserve its landscape value. The fields and old farm buildings make a very attractive view from the Fishponds walks. People are naturally curious and somewhat concerned about what we are doing with the land so we wanted to take this opportunity to explain what we have done so far and our future plans. The field will remain as agricultural land with an emphasis on helping wildlife and encouraging biodiversity.

Open gardens

Marie Mills reports on Saturday & Sunday 28–29 June Almost 20 gardens opened for this occasion, providing a lovely afternoon for all who live in the village and for visitors from further afield. We raised £1526 from programme sales and have handed £500 to each of our chosen charities – Bartholomew Educational Foundation, GreenTEA and John Radcliffe Breastfeeding Support Service. Many thanks to everyone who took part and the folk musicians who added so much to the conviviality of the weekend. We now look forward to summer 2016.

Lin Miller reports from August OASIS Many thanks to everyone who helped in any way with OASIS 2014. The event was another great success with overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants. We had record numbers this year, including several new faces. Workshops ranged from making fabric flowers to cheese tasting and the daily reminiscence sessions led by Oxfordshire Museums Service were very popular. Afternoons included useful advice from Trading Standards on avoiding ‘scams’ and an introduction to medical detection dogs. Local singers ‘Strange Folk’ rounded off an enjoyable three days. Participants shared a hot two-course lunch every day and homemade cake with their afternoon tea, as well as amusing and thought-provoking epilogues from clergy from our three churches. We are grateful to the Parish Council for continuing to support this popular event and thank them for another grant. This covered the hire of the village hall so that all other funds could be used to provide interesting and varied workshops, speakers and lunches.

Thanks to Grant Paton for spotting the (tenuous?) Eynsham link above… And congratulations to Rosie Dennington (pic © Oxford Mail) whose Bird Cage corset dress has just been featured in Vanity Fair’s September ‘Style’ issue, worn by Helena Bonham Carter and photographed by Mario Testino.

Judy Broadfield

Patricia Crowley reports; image © Stephen Broadfield Judy has been taking yoga classes in Eynsham and surrounding areas since the early 1990s. Her students – including three who joined in the early days when classes were held in the primary school hall – gathered before the summer break to wish her a long and happy retirement and to thank her, not only for the weekly workouts, but for the care and personal attention she gave to all her students. Most of us over 50 won’t forget her regular refrains: ‘You should feel a pleasant stretch’ and ‘You can go a bit wider’ as we approached what felt like the splits and ‘Practise a little each day before the class next week and you should be fine’. Nor will we forget her legendary mince pies – not least because, until such time as she and her husband move to spending more time in the Caribbean where they first met, they will still be lovingly prepared by her in time for the last class before Christmas. Two of Judy’s students have become successful yoga teachers in their turn. Sharon Watson hosts a popular summer school in Witney as well as her Tuesday classes in Eynsham; while Wendy Perry takes over the Wednesday evening group at St Leonard’s Hall – you can contact her on 07775 904911. Our third yoga teacher, Hazel Faithfull, features on page 12. 15

Internationally, we bought a Shelterbox, which you may have seen at Eynsham Carnival; contributed to the Rotary International project to eradicate polio; and finished funding our sanitation project in Kilifi, Kenya. GreenTEA FRUIT FESTIVAL: In summer and autumn it is easy to enjoy local seasonal food – from our gardens and allotments, our wonderful local shops, and from foraging and bartering. And now it’s time for apples, pears and damsons. So join us in St Leonard’s Hall on Saturday 18 October from 14:00– 16:00 to celebrate what Eynsham has to offer, with our generous apple share which saves tonnes of fruit from being wasted. Try your hand at apple juicing, plus games and quizzes for all ages. Expert grafters and pruners will share their skills. Bring your apples to be identified and add to the table, which now shows over 30 varieties grown in our own back yard. Look out for Eynsham Country Market fruit tarts and preserves. There will be recipes too, with a focus on eating well while relying less on expensive, carbon-hungry meat. ‘OUR EYNSHAM’ exhibition in the Bartholomew Room, Saturday 8 November 10.30–16:30 and Sunday 9 November 13:00–17:00. Eric White writes...

DIRTY CARPETS? UPHOLSTERY?

“Inspired by the East Anglian artist, Charles Debenham, I decided to depict Eynsham in a series of mixed media paintings showing some of the more interesting corners of the village along with its best-loved landmarks. So, in addition to views of central Eynsham, expect to see locations rarely given the painterly treatment; you may be surprised by the results.”

The Jolly Sportsman, Lombard Street really does live up to its name. In the five years she has been running the pub, licensee Rebecca Bryan has transformed space at the rear into a glorious little courtyard garden complete with an Aunt Sally. The pub also boasts two pool teams, is home to Eynsham Football Club and serves a delicious full English breakfast on Saturdays. The high quality of its real ale has earned it a Cask Marque.

The Newlands Inn, Newland Street began life as two adjoining cottages in 1580, trading as a pub from the 1860s. One of the delights of this pub is that licensees Ann & Gerry Woodin hold a meat raffle every Saturday night. Those who drink here regularly say the secret of its current success is that conversation and a jolly good pint take precedence, as food is not served here. Extra tables are available on the grass verge opposite.

The Queens Head, Queen Street is a real community pub: home of Eynsham Cricket Club since 1973 and frequented by the Road Runners, a badminton group and three book clubs. Scrumptious bacon butties and traditional pub food are served 12:00–14:00 and 17:30–19:30 Monday to Friday.
