In the Game, Her Exes Were Portrayed as the ‘Bad Guys’ Portland, Ore., Web developer Robert Fink wanted a unique way to propose to his girlfriend, so he created a computer game that would sweep her off her feet. After spending five months creating “Knight Man, A Quest For Love,” Fink asked his girlfriend, Angel White, to test the game, United Press International reported last week. In it, the knight collects a gold ring and rescues a princess — leading to a proposal in the game and Fink proposing in real life to White. She said yes. (EXPRESS) BRAGGING RIGHTS

Concord, N.H. The first full day of winter brought a wild mix of weather across the U.S. on Sunday: ice and high wind in the Great Lakes and New England areas, flooding in the South, snow in the Midwest and record-shattering temperatures in the 60s and 70s along the mid-Atlantic. Snow and ice knocked out power to 400,000 homes and businesses in Michigan, upstate New York and northern New England. As of midafternoon Sunday, more than 500 airline flights had been canceled and about 3,800 delayed, according to aviation tracking website FlightAware.com. The icy weather was expected to make roads hazardous through at least today from the upper Midwest to northern New England during one of the busiest travel times of the year. High-temperature records for the date fell for the second straight day in the mid-Atlantic states because of a mass of hot, muggy air from the South. In New York’s Central Park, the mercury reached 70 degrees, easily eclipsing the previous high of 63 from 1998. Records were also set in Wilmington, Del. (67), Atlantic City, N.J. (68), and Philadelphia (67). Wash-

Some Good News for Travelers If there is a silver lining for the estimated 94.5 million Americans who were planning to travel by road or air during this holiday season, which runs from this past Saturday through New Year’s Day, it’s that Christmas happens mid-week this year, AAA spokeswoman Heather Hunter said. “When a holiday falls on a Wednesday, it gives travelers more flexibility of either leaving the weekend before, or traveling right before the holiday and extending the trip through the following weekend,” Hunter said. Teen Shot by Classmate at Colo. High School Dies Littleton, Colo. A suburban Denver high school student who was shot in the head by a classmate died Saturday afternoon, hospital officials and her family said. Claire Davis, 17, was in critical condition after being shot at pointblank range at Arapahoe High School on Dec. 13. “It is with heavy hearts that we share that at 4:29 p.m. this afternoon, Claire Davis passed away, with her family at her side,” a statement from Littleton Adventist Hospital said.

“Despite the best efforts of our physicians and nursing staff, and Claire’s fighting spirit, her injuries were too severe and the most advanced medical treatments could not prevent this tragic loss of life. Claire’s death is immensely heartbreaking for our entire community, our staff and our families.” The Davis family said in a statement that they are grateful for the 17 years they had with their daughter: “The grace, laughter and light she brought to this world will not be extinguished by her death; to the contrary, it will only get stronger.”

The date for a public memorial to honor the teen would be announced later, the hospital’s statement said. Karl Pierson, 18, shot Davis, who happened to be sitting nearby with a friend as Pierson — armed with a shotgun, ammunition strapped to his body, Molotov cocktails and a machete — entered the school and headed toward the library. Davis appeared to be a random target, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson has said. Pierson set off one of the incendiary devices and fired five shots before killing himself. (AP)

ington tied its 1889 mark at 72. Temperatures were expected to drop back into the 30s by tonight and Tuesday. The scene was much more seasonal Sunday in Vermont, where Lynne White of West Charleston listened to the cracking of falling tree branches and gazed at the coating of ice on her home. “It’s actually really pretty,” she said. “Not safe, I’m sure, but it’s pretty.” Heavy snow in Wisconsin forced dozens of churches to cancel Sunday services. Milwaukee got about 9 inches, Manitowoc, 7. Ice and snow in Oklahoma were blamed for three traffic deaths on slick roads. In Kentucky, five people were killed in flooding caused by the storm system, including the bodies of three people who were pulled from Rolling Fork River on Sunday after their vehicle was swept away by floodwaters. In Arkansas, authorities said Sunday that a woman was killed after a tornado with winds of about 130 mph struck in St. Francis County on Saturday. In New York’s St. Lawrence County, almost 2 inches of ice had accumulated by early Sunday, coating tree limbs and power lines, and a state of emergency was declared to keep the roads clear of motorists. “It’s a big party weekend … before Christmas,” county dispatch operations supervisor Jim Chestnut said. “This put a little bit of a damper onto that.” HOLLY R AMER (AP)

U.S. Card Security Behind the Times Experts: Magnetic strips on the back are too easy to copy New York The U.S. is the juiciest target for hackers hunting credit-card information. And experts say incidents like the recent data theft at Target will get worse before they get better. That’s in part because U.S. credit and debit cards rely on an easyto-copy magnetic strip on the back of the card, which stores account information using the same technology as cassette tapes. In most countries outside the U.S., cards use digital chips to hold account information. The chip generates a unique code every time it’s used — making the cards more difficult for criminals to copy. Companies haven’t further enhanced security because it can be expensive. And while global credit- and debit-card fraud hit a record $11.27 billion last year, those costs accounted for just 5.2 cents of every $100 in transactions, according to the Nilson Report, which tracks global payments. U.S. credit-card companies have a plan to replace magnetic strips with digital chips by the fall of 2015. But retailers also want each transaction to require a personal identi-

fication number, or PIN, too. Although security experts say no security system is fail-safe, there are several measures stores, banks and credit-card companies can take to protect against these attacks. The simple, square, card-swiping machines at most checkout counters are hard to infiltrate because they are completely separate from the Internet. But as retailers switch to faster, Internet-based payment systems, they may expose customer data to hackers. Retailers need to build robust firewalls around those systems to guard against attack, security experts say. They could also use encryption technology that scrambles the data so it looks like gibberish. These technologies can be expensive, however. Individual customers are not on the hook for fraudulent charges that result from security breaches. But these kinds of attacks do raise costs —and, likely, fees for all customers. Bethlehem, West Bank There’s been something missing in the birthplace of Christianity: Christians. For years, Palestinian Christians have been quietly abandoning the place where Jesus is said to have been born in a manger. Middle-class residents here have packed their bags for less chaotic lives in Latin America, Europe and the United States. Tourism ground to a halt more than a decade ago, during the second Palestinian intifada, or uprising, and is now experiencing a comeback. But Palestinians say major challenges remain: the Israeli military checkpoints that separate Bethlehem from Jerusalem; the shuttered

homes and shops that are symbols of a stagnant economy; and the Israeli settlements that are growing around Bethlehem on land claimed by the Palestinians for a future state. Vera Baboun, Bethlehem’s mayor, wants to make her city open to all, especially to Christian pilgrims — and those Palestinians who have left. Baboun wants to lure back former residents and roll out the red carpet to encourage Christian pilgrims to extend their stays. Efforts are underway to improve handicapped accessibility to the town for aging visitors and to renovate the Church of the Nativity, which UNESCO says is the oldest Christian church still in daily use. “This is the place where the message of peace was born with Jesus Christ,” Baboun said. “When they talk about reviving the message, you need to revive the city.” Clergy say the emigration eventually could reduce Bethlehem’s historic churches to mere tour-

a 39-day standoff between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian militants who hid inside the Church of the Nativity. But with the violence long over, Baboun is ready to focus on the future. Tourist visits are up this year, Palestinian officials say. Most visi-

Almost all spend the night at hotels inside Israel. “We don’t benefit from the buying power of these tourists,” said Fayrouz Khoury, deputy director of the Chamber of Commerce. Khoury estimated Bethlehem’s unemployment rate at more than 23 percent — among the highest in the West Bank. Taxis from Jerusalem often refuse to take travelers into Bethlehem, and Jewish Israelis are warned against entering the city, according to the Israeli Defense Forces. Detailed Google navigational maps end at the Israeli military checkpoints. “We cannot improve the tourism sector under occupation,” Palestinian Tourism Minister Rula Ma’aya said. Kampala, Uganda

South Sudan’s central government lost control of the capital of a key oilproducing state Sunday, the military said, as renegade forces loyal to a former deputy president seized more territory in fighting that has raised fears of full-blown civil war in the world’s newest country. Bentiu, the capital of oil-rich Unity state, is now controlled by a military commander loyal to former Vice President Riek Machar, said Col. Philip Aguer, the South Sudanese military spokesman. Michael Makuei Lueth, South Sudan’s information minister, said Machar was believed to be hiding somewhere in Unity state.

The armed rebels were said to be in control days earlier of some of South Sudan’s oil fields, endangering the country’s economic lifeblood. Although the country’s capital, Juba, is mostly peaceful a week after

Lia Seremetis knew exactly how her bike was stolen. Surveillance video from her apartment building showed thieves walking into the courtyard with a sledgehammer and breaking the lock that held her Trek to a post. She posted pictures and a description of her bike on message boards and on Facebook. But after a while, “I had given up,” said Seremetis, 25. “I bought a new bike and kind of let go.” The experience has become all too common for cyclists in the District and Northern Virginia. In Arlington County, 380 bike thefts were reported as of midOctober, compared with 233 during the same period a year ago. Fairfax police reported 468 thefts in that period — up 19 percent from 2012. In Alexandria, bike thefts are at a five-year peak. And D.C. police reported arresting 98 people for bike thefts in 2012, up from 65 arrests the year before. The rise in thefts might be partly a result of the District’s success in promoting bicycle use. The percentage of people biking to work in the city increased more than 30 percent from 2011 to 2012, based on data from the U.S. Census. “There’s more bikes on the street and there are more people riding who may not know the best way to lock up their bikes,” said Greg Billing, the advocacy coordinator at the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. But his bike was stolen from outside the Van Dorn Street station on his fourth commute. Now he bikes all the way to his Springfield, Va., office to avoid locking up outside. Although lots of bikes disappear, victims have also gotten more aggressive about reclaiming them. Angry bicyclists are posting pictures of their missing bikes on

Craigslist, Facebook and sites such as stopbiketheftdc.tumblr.com. Jared Janowiak is something of a legend in this community. When three bikes were stolen from the parking lot of his Fairfax condo building in July, he found one on Craigslist, contacted the seller and set up a sting operation. But Seremetis stumbled on her stolen bike by dumb luck. Riding up 14th Street, she saw a bike parked near W Street NW and thought, “Hey, that looks like my old bike.” It was the same size and color. Glue was stuck to the front where she had previously attached a Barbie doll. And there was a dent on the bar, right where her lock had been taken off with the sledgehammer. Seremetis found the serial number and the email proving she bought it. Police came and were convinced that the bike was hers. They cut off the lock and she was reunited with her Trek. A Bit of the Homeland for Christmas Washington All Esessien Offiong wants for Christmas — or at least for his Nigerian Christmas stew — is antelope. But the stores in his Laurel, Md., neighborhood don’t carry African game, so Offiong will do what he does every year: wing it. “We have learned that goat meat is a pretty good substitute,” said Offiong, a federal pension agency staffer. “You have to improvise when you are far from home.” Such are the holidays in Washington, where 1 in 5 residents is foreign born and immigrants and expats improvise, import and adapt Christmas traditions from all over the world. Even in the age of Internet shopping, decking the halls can be an effort if you want to deck them with straw “yule goats” (Swedes), defecating manger shepherds (Catalonians) or bambooand-tissue parol stars (Filipinos).

For Icelander Fridrik Jonsson, the annual ingredient hunt begins with a search for rock ptarmigan, a game bird more common to the mountains of the Arctic than the aisles of a Safeway.

“It’s not easy to find. You have to know a guy who knows a guy. It helps to have diplomatic status.” — FRIDRIK JONSSON, A WORLD BANK EMPLOYEE, ON FINDING ROCK PTARMIGAN, A BIRD USED IN ICELANDIC COOKING

Icelanders like to roast or grill their ptarmigan or, sometimes, simmer the quail-size bird in a creamy roux. When they can get it, that is. Some years, Jonsson has made do with other game meat, such as reindeer, which is another headscratcher for local butchers. He doesn’t even ask for whale meat. In Vienna, Va., Julia Sandberg portrays Santa Lucia as part of a traditional Swedish ceremony that dates to the 14th century commemorating the burning of the saint.

8-year-old son expects on each of the 13 nights that he puts his shoe on the windowsill of his bedroom. It’s an ancient Icelandic custom that mischievous jolasveinar, or yule lads, will leave a trinket in the shoe of a nice child (or a potato for a naughty one). For idiosyncratic holiday traditions, it’s hard to beat the Catalan-

born residents who bring out a little crouching shepherd, called a caganer, for their manger scenes. The traditional figurines are shown doing something a Crate & Barrel ornament never would: defecating. “You can’t get those anywhere around here,” said Mar Tarres of Herndon, Va., who helped organize the annual Christmas celebration

D.C.’s CFO Estimates Millions in New Revenue Chief Financial Officer Natwar Gandhi issued his final set of D.C. government revenue estimates Friday, less than two weeks before he hands the reins over to successor Jeffrey DeWitt. It includes $19.8 million in additional funds in the current fiscal year and $42.7 million additional for the next. The upgrades, Gandhi wrote, are because of a strongerthan-expected real estate market. (TWP)

Grown-ups “feed” the log small packages before the ceremony, and then the kids descend with glee, pounding it until the gifts are, uh, delivered from the other end. Many will make a pilgrimage to Rodman’s, the pharmacy-turnedgourmet grocery in Friendship Heights that has become holiday central for Washington’s expat communities. The shelves are crowded with seasonal specialties from many a time zone: haggis from Scotland, Kipling mincemeat pies from Britain, Sachertorte from Vienna, Brazilian panettone, Spanish turron. Local Elijah Stewart, 5, just met Santa at a mall in Tysons Corner, Va. The two didn’t talk about what Elijah wanted for Christmas. They just chatted like old friends. ¶ “He felt very comfortable with Santa, which is always the catch and the kicker. He’s very believable,” said Elijah’s dad, Victor Stewart. According to Elijah, Stewart added:

For two generations of Washingtonians, “the real Santa” has been the one at Virginia’s Tysons Corner Center, a role owned by a man named Michael Graham since 1989. Graham, 56, spends most of the year working as a carpenter in Kodak, Tenn. He has an authentic white beard, which he keeps year-round, and ruddy cheeks. He laughs easily and his speech is peppered with exclamations of wonder, usually “Wow!” or “Oh, my word!” Nearly a quarter-century as Santa gives you a starring role in strangers’ lives. Photos of Graham dot the walls of people’s homes. “I’m with them at their house all the time, so they just treat me like I’m part of the family,” he says. A McLean, Va., pediatrician once waited in line for three hours — sans kid — just to meet him. The doctor had a board in his office where he put photos his patients sent him around the holidays. He told Graham, “I’ve got several hundred up on this board and over 95 percent of all these pictures are of you.” With that kind of market saturation, it makes sense that Graham is starting to meet the children of the children who once sat on his lap. He recalls meeting four generations of one particular family, starting out with a woman and her daughter and ending up with the woman, her daughter, her grandchild and her great-grandchild. A young man once proposed to his girlfriend while she was sitting on Graham’s knee. (She said yes.) An elderly man brought an urn containing the ashes of his brother, who had loved visiting other Santas, to be photographed on Graham’s lap.

Michael Graham has spent two decades as Santa Claus at Tysons Corner Center in Virginia.

It was 28 Christmases ago that Graham was asked to fill in as Santa in a Gatlinburg, Tenn., Christmas parade. The next year, he signed up with a photo company that was looking for Santas. He bleached his black hair and beard a snowy white. But did he look like Santa at 30? “Not as much as I do now!” he says. After he worked in Tennessee and Alabama, the company told him they had an opening at a mall in the D.C. area. Graham is still at Tysons. He usually stays in corporate housing when he’s in town, though this year he’s lodging with a friend. His wife joins him, and when his three kids were younger, they did, too. Back home, Graham keeps photos and other mementos children have given him over the years in “a room, like an office, that looks like Christmas exploded in it.” Graham gets a lot of little gifts from the children who come to see him. It’s no wonder. Parents say Graham has a knack with kids. He’s always holding tiny babies

— the youngest was 1 day old. “Parents trust me to hold their precious cargo!” he says. “I mean, my word!” “She didn’t cry for the first time,” Kenjewel McCullough, 34, says of daughter Lea’naisa Johnson, 4. They tried to get a photo with Santa at another mall last Christmas, but Lea’naisa was too scared. This year, “she was happy, she was excited,” McCullough says. The key to Graham’s rapport with kids, he says, is “giving them that one-on-one time. They’ve got your undivided attention, and that’s what it’s all about.” “The gifts change just because of the technology and the media, but the kids are the same,” he says. “They’re just full of the wide-eyed wonder of Christmas.” So is he. Another Late Letdown The Washington Redskins (3-12) lost their seventh straight — and second in a row by one point — when they fell 24-23 to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Tony Romo rallied the Cowboys from a nine-point, fourth-quarter deficit, finding DeMarco Murray for a 10-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 1:08 remaining. In the loss, Redskins receiver Pierre Garcon broke Art Monk’s single-season franchise reception record, while coach Mike Shanahan clinched his worst record in his 20 seasons as a head coach. The Cowboys (8-7) will host the Philadelphia Eagles next week in a winner-take-all, regular-season finale for the NFC East title. (AP) Best Crowd

PENALTY YARDS

The previous home game led to the empty snowy wasteland vs. the Chiefs. There was rain Sunday, and the Redskins were playing for nothing, and there were plenty of Dallas fans at the stadium, but it still got very loud when it needed to be loud.

PATRICK McDERMOTT PHOTOS (GETTY IMAGES)

Worst Opening Series

Pierre Garcon REDSKINS WR

Of Kirk Cousins’ 197 passing yards, 144 of them were courtesy of Garcon. Accumulating for 73 percent of the receiving yards in a game is an unusually high mark.

Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray scored the game-winning touchdown with 1:08 remaining in Sunday’s win over the Redskins.

Sunday’s Best & Worst Worst Season If you wanted to add “blow a two-possession fourth-quarter lead at FedEx Field against Tony Romo and the Cowboys in London Fletcher’s home finale” to the ledger, well, go right ahead.

Tony Romo COWBOYS QB

A week after throwing two picks in the final 3 minutes, Romo came up in the clutch. On fourth down with a little more than a minute left, he found DeMarco Murray for the go-ahead score. (EXPRESS)

Worst Job Pressuring a Gimpy Quarterback I dunno. I don’t call plays. Just seemed like Tony Romo had an awful lot of time to make the game-winning throw to DeMarco Murray.

Worst Final Drive There were lots of moments of promise for Kirk Cousins. The final drive wasn’t

one of them. The game ended on three incompletions, none of which seemed anywhere close to being complete. Cousins’ final pass was caught by Fred Davis, although Davis was out of bounds. Also, Davis hadn’t been on the field to start the play.

Worst Special Teams Miscue Every week there’s one of these. Every single week. Fix it or something. Anyhow, last time these teams played, Dwayne Harris recorded 222 total return yards, including a punt return for a score and a kickoff return that set up another. He was injured this week, so the Cowboys signed Micheal Spurlock off the street and he returned his first punt 62 yards to set up a touchdown.

Worst Agony The Redskins are on pace to have their worst point-differential since the early 1960s. But the past two weeks, the Redskins have lost by a combined two points, on games decided inside the final minute. Sure, they’re a bad team, and bad teams find ways to lose, but that’s a pretty tough eight-day span.

Worst Field If the FedEx Field playing surface was a flavor, it would be licorice. If it was a band, it would be Nickelback. If it was a public transportation feature, it would be a Metro escalator. If it was a television, it would be a 9-inch black-andwhite tube. If it was a football team, it’d be … nah, that’s a cheap shot.

I feel like I’ve typed those words 11 or 12 times this season. This time the Redskins got the ball first, and went dropped pass, run for loss, false start, one-yard gain, punt.

DAN STEINBERG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

London Fletcher, who’s likely to retire, may have played his final game at FedEx Field on Sunday.

Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon had 11 catches for 144 yards Sunday.

Garcon Breaks Redskins Record Wide receiver tops Monk’s single-season mark for receptions Redskins Washington Redskins receiver Pierre Garcon broke Hall of Famer Art Monk’s franchise record for catches in a season by grabbing his 107th. Garcon’s 11th reception in Sunday’s 24-23 loss against the Dallas Cowboys, a 19-yard gain, came with about six minutes left in the third quarter. That gave Garcon one more catch than the 106 Monk had in 1984. After breaking the record, Garcon didn’t have another catch in the game. Garcon tied Monk’s team mark in the third quarter with an 8-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Garcon has 107 catches for 1,290 yards this season, his second in Washington after leaving the Indianapolis Colts as a free agent. This year, Garcon has 101 more targets than any other Redskins player. He will have a chance to add to his record-setting catch total in Washington’s season finale next week against the New York Giants. Garcon is also 193 yards away from matching the Redskins’ single-season record for receiving yards — a mark set by Santana Moss in 2005. (AP/ E XPRESS)

The New England Patriots breezed past Baltimore, ending the Ravens’ four-game winning streak. The Patriots (11-4) clinched their fifth straight AFC East title. The loss eliminated the Ravens (8-7) from contention in the AFC North and dropped them into a tie with Miami and San Diego for the final AFC wild-card slot.

Andrew Luck threw for 241 yards and a touchdown and the Indianapolis Colts beat the Kansas City Chiefs in a potential preview of an AFC wild-card playoff game. The Colts (10-5) took advantage of four turnovers by the Chiefs (11-4). If Indianapolis ends up as the No. 4 seed and the Chiefs the No. 5 for the playoffs, they’ll meet again in two weeks.

Cam Newton threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Domenik Hixon with 23 seconds left to lift the Carolina Panthers to a win over the New Orleans Saints (10-5) and clinch the team’s first playoff berth since 2008. Carolina (11-4) can wrap up the NFC South and a first-round bye in the playoffs with a win next Sunday at Atlanta.

Peyton Manning regained his NFL single-season record for touchdown passes with 51 and the Denver Broncos have clinched the AFC West. Manning led the Broncos (12-3) to a win over the Texans (2-13) on Sunday, throwing for 400 yards and four touchdowns, including three in the fourth quarter to surpass the 50 TD passes Tom Brady threw in 2007.

Fred Jackson had 111 yards rushing and scored on a 9-yard run to help lead the Buffalo Bills to a win over the Miami Dolphins. The Bills (6-9) limited the Dolphins to a season-low 103 yards offense and six first downs. The Dolphins (8-7) had a three-game winning streak snapped and are in jeopardy of missing the playoffs for the fifth straight year.

Carson Palmer overcame four interceptions to throw a 31-yard touchdown to Michael Floyd with 2:13 left, and the Arizona Cardinals (10-5) kept their playoff hopes alive with a win over Seattle, snapping the Seahawks’ 14-game home win streak. The Seahawks (12-3) can still clinch the NFC West with a win over St. Louis next Sunday. (AP)

Most actors fight being pigeonholed. Sylvester Stallone punched his way into being typecast and isn’t in a hurry to abandon his perch. In the past 37 years, he’s portrayed boxer Rocky Balboa six times (with another opportunity reportedly on the way). And now he stars in “Grudge Match” as Henry “Razor” Sharp, a former light heavyweight champ. Razor fled the sport in his heyday, avoiding a tie-breaking fight with longtime rival Billy “The Kid” McDonnen (played by Robert De Niro, also a serial boxer portrayer).

You have to hand it to Stallone and his enduring career. It’s amazing that he’s still kicking — and punching. The movie follows along as Razor is lured out of retirement, and all the requisite training scenes — the jabbing and jogging, raw eggswilling and truck-pulling — are nearly as exhilarating as they were in “Rocky” in 1976. Stallone’s acting is a little rusty. He was never a paragon of emotional depth as an actor, but now his frozen face only exacerbates his short-

comings when this comedic drama takes turns toward the serious. Luckily, a strong supporting cast makes it up. The brilliant duo of Kevin Hart and Alan Arkin steal the show as the fight organizer and Razor’s dirty-old-man trainer, respectively. Meanwhile, Jon Bernthal (from AMC’s “The Walking Dead”) steps up to remind viewers how dramatic acting should look, playing Kid’s estranged son. Kid isn’t much of a father, nor is he a particularly good person, although there are momentary flashes of his humanity. He’s a mostly two-dimensional character, and

Stallone might have been better cast in the role. As it is, although Razor is the more likable of the two, there’s an inverse correlation between each scene’s potential for enjoyment and

the number of lines Stallone has to say. For example, nearly wordless sight gags involving the pair fighting while wearing green unitards and a skydiving adventure gone awry garner laughs. Less effective is a romantic subplot between Razor and his one-time girlfriend, played by Kim Basinger. E v e r y on e n e e d s a b r e a k from seriousness now and then. “Grudge Match” serves that function. And you have to hand it to Stallone and his enduring career. It’s amazing that he’s still kicking, not to mention punching. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Writer Struggled With Depression BRONZARTE ™

Obituary

Popular young adult author Ned Vizzini, who committed suicide last week at age 32, wrote candidly and humorously about his struggles with depression and as a result helped countless others, his publisher said. “At his signings … kids would approach him to say that he changed their lives — he gave them hope,” his longtime publisher, Alessandra Balzer, said in a statement Friday. Vizzini jumped off the roof of his parents’ home in Brooklyn on Thursday, said his brother, Daniel Vizzini. He had battled mental illness for much of his life and had “taken a turn for the worse” in recent weeks, Daniel Vizzini said. Ned Vizzini’s autobiographical novel “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” was adapted into a feature film. He was a prolific author of fiction and nonfiction and spoke around the country about mental health and the healing effects of writing. An emotional Judy Blume called him one of those people “who just touch your life in a certain way.” “I met him when he was a kid at some sort of get together,” she said. “And he was this incredibly lively young man and I told him,

Ned Vizzini wrote the autobiographical novel “It’s Kind of a Funny Story.”

‘I can’t wait to see what you do.’ ” “It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” praised by The New York Times as “insightful and utterly authentic,” was written in just a few weeks and published in 2006. Set in New York City, and 85 percent true, according to Vizzini, it told of an ambitious but overworked high school student who considers jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge and ends up in a psychiatric ward. “So why am I depressed?” asks the narrator. “That’s the million-dollar question, baby, the Tootsie Roll question; not even the owl knows the answer to that one. I don’t know either. All I know is the chronology.” A couple of years before the book came out, Blume introduced Vizzini for a segment on the “Today” show. She was worried by how “subdued” he was compared to when she first met him. “And later, he wrote ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story’ and when I read it, I knew that what had happened to the kid in the book happened to him,” Blume said. Joaquin Phoenix plays Theodore, who’s in love with a computer in Spike Jonze’s “Her.”

A Siri-ish Relationship Film Review How essential are physical and emotional connections when falling in love? In “Her,” Spike Jonze’s futuristic exploration of a man’s relationship with his computer — and Jonze’s first solo-penned feature — the filmmaker surveys human disjunction. Joaquin Phoenix is Theodore, struggling to cope with his unwanted divorce from neuroscientist Catherine. After seeing an ad for an artificial intelligence operating system, Theodore purchases one and finds his new OS is voiced by a dame with a sultry, whiskeystained tone named Samantha (a witty and relaxed Scarlett Johansson, who is never seen on-camera). Samantha is at Theodore’s beck and call. Communicating by way of a small hand-held device, she keeps him on schedule and even encourages him to get back out there and go on a blind date, which goes badly. Event ua lly T heodore a nd Samantha, who is eager to please

and has the ability to grow through her experiences, fall for each other. Jonze manages to capture real intimacy as the couple greet each other in the morning and say good night when the day is done. Amy Adams delivers a delicate portrayal of Theodore’s lovelorn neighbor, who thinks anybody who falls in love — with an OS system or a human — is a freak. “It’s kind of

a form of socially acceptable insanity,” she proclaims. Theodore’s exwife just thinks he’s crazy. “You always wanted to have a wife without actually dealing with anything real,” she tells him. Thus, the lingering questions are brought to the forefront: To what lengths would we go to avoid certain truths? And could virtual affairs be the inevitable evolution of relationships in our tech-blooming society? JESSICA HERNDON (AP)

‘Messiah’ Singalong

‘Good for the Jews’

This is Handel’s “Messiah” for the maximalist: 2,400 singers in the audience plus a stage sagging under the weight of a full orchestra and hundreds of Washington-area choristers. And they sing the whole dang thing, all 100 minutes of it. Just note that while the show is free, tickets are still required and will be distributed (two per person) in the Hall of Nations starting at 6 p.m.

‘Flashdance — The Musical’ “Flashdance” was arguably the “Showgirls” of the ’80s — reviled by critics, beloved by audiences who reveled in its cheesy sexiness and bad dialogue. “32 pounds of flour, over 100 individual tests, and 1,536 cookies later, I had my answers.” — J. KENJI LOPEZ-ALT AT SWEETS.SERIOUSEATS .COM lists the stats he racked up while

attempting to make the perfect chocolate chip cookies, ones that “are barely crisp around the edges with a buttery, toffee-like crunch that transitions into a chewy, moist center that bends like caramel, rich with butter and big pockets of melted chocolate.” Lopez-Alt strikes gold with one recipe and spends the rest of the post explaining the science behind it.

“Poking around the shop, Rollie realized they still had a stack of fancy French paper meant for lining envelopes. On a lark, he placed the lining paper in a showcase and priced it at 10 cents a sheet. The paper sold out instantly.” — ETHAN TREX AT THEWEEK.COM unwraps

the mystery of the inception of wrapping paper. It was invented by accident, Trex writes, when J.C. and Rollie Hall’s Kansas City, Mo., store did so well one year that it ran out of the red, white and green tissue paper generally used for gift wrapping. Trex concludes, “Today, wrapping paper is a $3.2 billion industry, and you can buy it by the roll at the Halls’ store, Hallmark.”

Kardashian cover stories aren’t selling as many magazines as they used to, the New York Post reported. “It’s over.
