The first full day of winter brought a wild mix of weather across the U.S. on Sunday: ice and high wind in the Great Lakes and New England areas, flooding in the South, snow in the Midwest and record-shattering temperatures in the 60s and 70s along the mid-Atlantic. Snow and ice knocked out power to 400,000 homes and businesses in Michigan, upstate New York and northern New England. As of midafternoon Sunday, more than 500 airline ﬂights had been canceled and about 3,800 delayed, according to aviation tracking website FlightAware.com. The icy weather was expected to make roads hazardous through at least today from the upper Midwest to northern New England during one of the busiest travel times of the year. High-temperature records for the date fell for the second straight day in the mid-Atlantic states because of a mass of hot, muggy air from the South. Teen Shot by Classmate at Colo. High School Dies Littleton, Colo. A suburban Denver high school student who was shot in the head by a classmate died Saturday afternoon, hospital officials and her family said. Claire Davis, 17, was in critical condition after being shot at pointblank range at Arapahoe High School on Dec. 13. “It is with heavy hearts that we share that at 4:29 p.m. this afternoon, Claire Davis passed away, with her family at her side,” a statement from Littleton Adventist Hospital said.

“Despite the best efforts of our physicians and nursing staff, and Claire’s ﬁghting spirit, her injuries were too severe and the most advanced medical treatments could not prevent this tragic loss of life. Claire’s death is immensely heartbreaking for our entire community, our staff and our families.” The Davis family said in a statement that they are grateful for the 17 years they had with their daughter: “The grace, laughter and light she brought to this world will not be extinguished by her death; to the contrary, it will only get stronger.”

The date for a public memorial to honor the teen would be announced later, the hospital’s statement said. Karl Pierson, 18, shot Davis, who happened to be sitting nearby with a friend as Pierson — armed with a shotgun, ammunition strapped to his body, Molotov cocktails and a machete — entered the school and headed toward the library. U.S. Card Security Behind the Times Experts: Magnetic strips on the back are too easy to copy New York The U.S. is the juiciest target for hackers hunting credit-card information. And experts say incidents like the recent data theft at Target will get worse before they get better. That’s in part because U.S. credit and debit cards rely on an easyto-copy magnetic strip on the back of the card, which stores account information using the same technology as cassette tapes. In most countries outside the U.S., cards use digital chips to hold account information. The chip generates a unique code every time it’s used — making the cards more difﬁcult for criminals to copy. Companies haven’t further enhanced security because it can be expensive. And while global credit- and debit-card fraud hit a record $11.27 billion last year, those costs accounted for just 5.2 cents of every $100 in transactions, according to the Nilson Report, which tracks global payments. U.S. credit-card companies have a plan to replace magnetic strips with digital chips by the fall of 2015. But retailers also want each transaction to require a personal identi-

Although security experts say no security system is fail-safe, there are several measures stores, banks and credit-card companies can take to protect against these attacks. The simple, square, card-swiping machines at most checkout counters are hard to infiltrate because they are completely separate from the Internet. But as retailers switch to faster, Internet-based payment systems, they may expose customer data to hackers. Retailers need to build robust firewalls around those systems to guard against attack, security experts say. They could also use encryption technology that scrambles the data so it looks like gibberish. These technologies can be expensive, however. Individual customers are not on the hook for fraudulent charges that result from security breaches. But these kinds of attacks do raise costs —and, likely, fees for all customers. Lia Seremetis knew exactly how her bike was stolen. Surveillance video from her apartment building showed thieves walking into the courtyard with a sledgehammer and breaking the lock that held her Trek to a post. She posted pictures and a description of her bike on message boards and on Facebook. But after a while, “I had given up,” said Seremetis, 25. “I bought a new bike and kind of let go.” The experience has become all too common for cyclists in the District and Northern Virginia. In Arlington County, 380 bike thefts were reported as of midOctober, compared with 233 during the same period a year ago. Fairfax police reported 468 thefts in that period — up 19 percent from 2012. In Alexandria, bike thefts are at a ﬁve-year peak. And D.C. police reported arresting 98 people for bike thefts in 2012, up from 65 arrests the year before. The rise in thefts might be partly a result of the District’s success in promoting bicycle use. The percentage of people biking to work in the city increased more than 30 percent from 2011 to 2012, based on data from the U.S. Census. “There’s more bikes on the street and there are more people riding who may not know the best way to lock up their bikes,” said Greg Billing, the advocacy coordinator at the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. Although lots of bikes disappear, victims have also gotten more aggressive about reclaiming them. Angry bicyclists are posting pictures of their missing bikes on

Craigslist, Facebook and sites such as stopbiketheftdc.tumblr.com. Jared Janowiak is something of a legend in this community. When three bikes were stolen from the parking lot of his Fairfax condo building in July, he found one on Craigslist, contacted the seller and set up a sting operation. But Seremetis stumbled on her stolen bike by dumb luck. Riding up 14th Street, she saw a bike parked near W Street NW and thought, “Hey, that looks like my old bike.” It was the same size and color. Glue was stuck to the front where she had previously attached a Barbie doll. And there was a dent on the bar, right where her lock had been taken off with the sledgehammer. Seremetis found the serial number and the email proving she bought it. Police came and were convinced that the bike was hers. They cut off the lock and she was reunited with her Trek. Local Elijah Stewart, 5, just met Santa at a mall in Tysons Corner, Va. The two didn’t talk about what Elijah wanted for Christmas. They just chatted like old friends. ¶ “He felt very comfortable with Santa, which is always the catch and the kicker. He’s very believable,” said Elijah’s dad, Victor Stewart. According to Elijah, Stewart added:

For two generations of Washingtonians, “the real Santa” has been the one at Virginia’s Tysons Corner Center, a role owned by a man named Michael Graham since 1989. Graham, 56, spends most of the year working as a carpenter in Kodak, Tenn. He has an authentic white beard, which he keeps year-round, and ruddy cheeks. He laughs easily and his speech is peppered with exclamations of wonder, usually “Wow!” or “Oh, my word!” Nearly a quarter-century as Santa gives you a starring role in strangers’ lives. Photos of Graham dot the walls of people’s homes. “I’m with them at their house all the time, so they just treat me like I’m part of the family,” he says. A McLean, Va., pediatrician once waited in line for three hours — sans kid — just to meet him. The doctor had a board in his ofﬁce where he put photos his patients sent him around the holidays. He told Graham, “I’ve got several hundred up on this board and over 95 percent of all these pictures are of you.” With that kind of market saturation, it makes sense that Graham is starting to meet the children of the children who once sat on his lap. He recalls meeting four generations of one particular family, starting out with a woman and her daughter and ending up with the woman, her daughter, her grandchild and her great-grandchild. A young man once proposed to his girlfriend while she was sitting on Graham’s knee. (She said yes.) An elderly man brought an urn containing the ashes of his brother, who had loved visiting other Santas, to be photographed on Graham’s lap.

It was 28 Christmases ago that Graham was asked to ﬁll in as Santa in a Gatlinburg, Tenn., Christmas parade. The next year, he signed up with a photo company that was looking for Santas. He bleached his black hair and beard a snowy white. But did he look like Santa at 30? “Not as much as I do now!” he says. After he worked in Tennessee and Alabama, the company told him they had an opening at a mall in the D.C. area. Graham is still at Tysons. He usually stays in corporate housing when he’s in town, though this year he’s lodging with a friend. His wife joins him, and when his three kids were younger, they did, too. Back home, Graham keeps photos and other mementos children have given him over the years in “a room, like an ofﬁce, that looks like Christmas exploded in it.” Graham gets a lot of little gifts from the children who come to see him. It’s no wonder. Parents say Graham has a knack with kids. He’s always holding tiny babies

— the youngest was 1 day old. “Parents trust me to hold their precious cargo!” he says. “I mean, my word!” “She didn’t cry for the ﬁrst time,” Kenjewel McCullough, 34, says of daughter Lea’naisa Johnson, 4. They tried to get a photo with Santa at another mall last Christmas, but Lea’naisa was too scared. This year, “she was happy, she was excited,” McCullough says. The key to Graham’s rapport with kids, he says, is “giving them that one-on-one time. They’ve got your undivided attention, and that’s what it’s all about.” “The gifts change just because of the technology and the media, but the kids are the same,” he says. “They’re just full of the wide-eyed wonder of Christmas.” So is he. one of them. The game ended on three incompletions, none of which seemed anywhere close to being complete. Cousins’ final pass was caught by Fred Davis, although Davis was out of bounds. Also, Davis hadn’t been on the field to start the play.

Worst Special Teams Miscue Every week there’s one of these. Every single week. Fix it or something. Anyhow, last time these teams played, Dwayne Harris recorded 222 total return yards, including a punt return for a score and a kickoff return that set up another. He was injured this week, so the Cowboys signed Micheal Spurlock off the street and he returned his first punt 62 yards to set up a touchdown.

Worst Agony The Redskins are on pace to have their worst point-differential since the early 1960s. But the past two weeks, the Redskins have lost by a combined two points, on games decided inside the final minute. Sure, they’re a bad team, and bad teams find ways to lose, but that’s a pretty tough eight-day span.

Worst Field If the FedEx Field playing surface was a flavor, it would be licorice. If it was a band, it would be Nickelback. If it was a public transportation feature, it would be a Metro escalator. If it was a television, it would be a 9-inch black-andwhite tube. If it was a football team, it’d be … nah, that’s a cheap shot.

I feel like I’ve typed those words 11 or 12 times this season. This time the Redskins got the ball first, and went dropped pass, run for loss, false start, one-yard gain, punt.

Garcon’s 11th reception in Sunday’s 24-23 loss against the Dallas Cowboys, a 19-yard gain, came with about six minutes left in the third quarter. That gave Garcon one more catch than the 106 Monk had in 1984. After breaking the record, Garcon didn’t have another catch in the game. Most actors fight being pigeonholed. Sylvester Stallone punched his way into being typecast and isn’t in a hurry to abandon his perch. In the past 37 years, he’s portrayed boxer Rocky Balboa six times (with another opportunity reportedly on the way). And now he stars in “Grudge Match” as Henry “Razor” Sharp, a former light heavyweight champ. Razor ﬂed the sport in his heyday, avoiding a tie-breaking ﬁght with longtime rival Billy “The Kid” McDonnen (played by Robert De Niro, also a serial boxer portrayer).

You have to hand it to Stallone and his enduring career. It’s amazing that he’s still kicking — and punching. The movie follows along as Razor is lured out of retirement, and all the requisite training scenes — the jabbing and jogging, raw eggswilling and truck-pulling — are nearly as exhilarating as they were in “Rocky” in 1976. Stallone’s acting is a little rusty. He was never a paragon of emotional depth as an actor, but now his frozen face only exacerbates his short-

comings when this comedic drama takes turns toward the serious. Luckily, a strong supporting cast makes it up. The brilliant duo of Kevin Hart and Alan Arkin steal the show as the fight organizer and Razor’s dirty-old-man trainer, respectively. Meanwhile, Jon Bernthal (from AMC’s “The Walking Dead”) steps up to remind viewers how dramatic acting should look, playing Kid’s estranged son. Kid isn’t much of a father, nor is he a particularly good person, although there are momentary ﬂashes of his humanity. He’s a mostly two-dimensional character, and

Less effective is a romantic subplot between Razor and his one-time girlfriend, played by Kim Basinger. E v e r y on e n e e d s a b r e a k from seriousness now and then. “Grudge Match” serves that function. And you have to hand it to Stallone and his enduring career. Popular young adult author Ned Vizzini, who committed suicide last week at age 32, wrote candidly and humorously about his struggles with depression and as a result helped countless others, his publisher said. “At his signings … kids would approach him to say that he changed their lives — he gave them hope,” his longtime publisher, Alessandra Balzer, said in a statement Friday. Vizzini jumped off the roof of his parents’ home in Brooklyn on Thursday, said his brother, Daniel Vizzini. He had battled mental illness for much of his life and had “taken a turn for the worse” in recent weeks, Daniel Vizzini said. Ned Vizzini’s autobiographical novel “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” was adapted into a feature film. He was a prolific author of fiction and nonfiction and spoke around the country about mental health and the healing effects of writing. An emotional Judy Blume called him one of those people “who just touch your life in a certain way.” “I met him when he was a kid at some sort of get together,” she said. “And he was this incredibly lively young man and I told him,

I don’t know either. All I know is the chronology.” A couple of years before the book came out, Blume introduced Vizzini for a segment on the “Today” show. She was worried by how “subdued” he was compared to when she ﬁrst met him. “And later, he wrote ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story’ and when I read it, I knew that what had happened to the kid in the book happened to him,” Blume said. In “Her,” Spike Jonze’s futuristic exploration of a man’s relationship with his computer — and Jonze’s first solo-penned feature — the filmmaker surveys human disjunction. Joaquin Phoenix is Theodore, struggling to cope with his unwanted divorce from neuroscientist Catherine. After seeing an ad for an artiﬁcial intelligence operating system, Theodore purchases one and ﬁnds his new OS is voiced by a dame with a sultry, whiskeystained tone named Samantha (a witty and relaxed Scarlett Johansson, who is never seen on-camera). Samantha is at Theodore’s beck and call. Communicating by way of a small hand-held device, she keeps him on schedule and even encourages him to get back out there and go on a blind date, which goes badly.
