‘It’s a national treasure’ TRANSPORTATION Back in the days when these things were allowed, aviation pioneer Harry Atwood landed his plane on the White House lawn, the finale of the first flight from Boston to Washington, D.C. Atwood would go on to other great feats, but the plane, a Burgess-Wright Model F, which he landed on the South Lawn that July day in 1911, would not fare so well. Four years later, another pilot would crash it into a Massachusetts swamp, and parts of it would be sold for scrap. Now, more than a century later, a group of aviation buffs have launched a campaign to restore the plane, which they say is the last remaining authentic Wright Brothers aircraft. Their goal is to raise $4 million to rebuild the plane, which would then be displayed in Terminal A at Reagan National Airport. “It’s just a fascinating project,” said Keith Meurlin, president of the Washington Airports Task Force, which helped launch the campaign. “The fact that it’s still

around, that we have the ability to preserve and display it, is a great opportunity.” The restoration would be done by Ken W. Hyde, who heads the Wright Experience, a Warrenton, Va.-based nonprofit dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Wright Brothers. Part of Hyde’s work focuses on restoring and rebuilding Wright Brothers aircraft. Hyde estimates that it would take 18 to 24 months — roughly 12,000 to 14,000 hours — to restore the plane. He previously built a

Clyde Kizer, part of the Discovery of Flight Foundation, which also is involved in the fundraising campaign, said it took two years to reach an agreement with airport officials to display the plane. “It’s a national treasure,” Kizer said, adding with a chuckle: “It’s the first airplane to land at the White House — legally.” Enough of the aircraft’s parts were recovered that experts consider the plane “original” Kizer said. The hope is that the BurgessWright plane would be displayed at National’s historic Terminal A, which opened in 1941. The space, with its view of the airport’s runways, is rented out for special events. “We are supportive of the effort to bring the Wright Flyer to the Nation’s Airport. We have committed to finding space for the aircraft and any associated displays so travelers can appreciate the history … it embodies,” said Christopher Paolino, spokesman for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which runs National and Dulles airports. BALTIMORE Jury selection for the first police officer to go to trial in Freddie Gray’s death began Monday with a judge questioning potential jurors about their knowledge of the explosive case, which led to widespread protests and rioting and added fuel to the Black Lives Matter movement. Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams conducted initial questioning in a courtroom but planned to interview 66 prospective jurors in a private conference room — an indication of how difficult the selection process could be for the highprofile trial. William Porter is one of six officers charged in the death of Gray, a 25-year-old black man who died of a severe spinal injury he suffered while in police custody. Porter, who is also black, is accused of failing to get medical help for Gray during several stops made by the police van that carried Gray on a 45-minute trip. At the end, officers found Gray unresponsive. He was taken to a hospital and died a week later, on April 19. The officer is being tried first in part because prosecutors want to use him as a witness in the trials of several other officers. He is charged with manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment. The judge asked 75 potential

jurors on Monday whether anyone had not heard about the case, the citywide curfew imposed after Gray’s death or the settlement paid to his family. No one responded. Twelve jurors said they had family members in law enforcement. Thirty-seven said they had been a victim or a suspect in a crime, had been to jail or had charges pending against them. Twenty-six people said they had strong feelings about the charges against Porter. Williams read aloud more than 200 names of possible witnesses that included more than 100 Baltimore police officers, lawyers and prosecutors. A small group of protesters

gathered outside the courtroom. Their chants of “All night, all day, we will fight for Freddie Gray,” could be heard throughout the proceedings. A verdict is likely to set the tone for the city. If Porter is acquitted, there could be protests and possibly more unrest. A conviction could send shockwaves through the city’s troubled police department. On the day Gray was buried, looting and rioting started, and businesses were burned down. The unrest resulted in millions of dollars in property damage. “Everything is at stake. The future of the city is at stake,” Police Commissioner Kevin Davis has said.

The judge said he expects the trial to wrap up by Dec. 17. Two other officers are black and the three additional officers are white. They will be tried separately beginning in January, lasting until the spring. Gray was initially handcuffed. Later during his van ride, his legs were shackled and he was placed back in the van without a seatbelt, a violation of department policy, prosecutors have said. Republican Gov. Larry Hogan said Monday that Maryland has been preparing for any disturbances related to the trials ever since he called in the National Guard in April. He said his team is meeting on an almost weekly basis. JULIET LINDERMAN (AP)

Colo. shooting suspect makes court appearance COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. The man accused of opening fire inside a Planned Parenthood clinic Friday, killing three and injuring nine others, made his first court appearance Monday and was told he will be charged with first-degree murder. Robert Lewis Dear Jr., 57, has been held without bond since he was taken into custody. Dear appeared in court through a video feed, his impassive face appearing on a flat-screen TV. Relatives and friends of people killed in the shooting were quietly seated in three wooden benches, their arms around one another as they watched Dear, who stood with his hands cuffed and wearing what appeared to be

a white, protective vest. Dear spoke four words during the hearing. He twice said “Yes” when asked if he understood his rights and the charge. Gilbert Martinez, chief judge for Colorado’s 4th Judicial District, asked Dear if he had any questions. “No questions,” Dear replied. At the end, Dear could be seen

mouthing a silent “Thank you” before the screen went black. Dear, who will be formally charged Dec. 9, faces a minimum sentence of life in prison and a maximum sentence of the death penalty, Martinez said. During the hearing, Dear stood next to Daniel King, his public defender. King was one of the attorneys who represented James Holmes, who was convicted this year of killing 12 people and wounding another 70 during a 2012 shooting spree in a Colorado movie theater. The Planned Parenthood shooting killed a police officer, Garrett Swasey, and two civilians: Ke’Arre Marcell Stewart, a 29-year-old Iraq War veteran and father of two, and Jennifer Markovsky, a 35-year-old mother of two who was at the clinic supporting a friend. CYBER SECURITY As toys go high-tech, hackers are zeroing in on a particularly vulnerable target — children. VTech, a Hong Kong-based company that sells baby monitors and digital learning toys such as children’s tablets, announced this weekend that the data for 5 million “customer accounts and related kids profiles worldwide” were compromised in a cyberattack. The stolen data included names and birth dates of children, mailing addresses and email addresses, as well as what e-books, learning games and other software were downloaded to toys, the company said. Troy Hunt, who runs a service that alerts consumers to data breaches, reviewed information provided to the tech-site Motherboard by the alleged hacker and found that it was possible to link the stolen data about kids back to their family’s last name and home address. Shares in VTech were suspended from trading early Monday but resumed later. Privacy advocates warn that the VTech incident may be one

of many online breaches that will involve children. Companies are increasingly producing and marketing high-tech toys that link dolls and games to the Internet — as well as information about the kids playing with them. “Toy companies are rushing to cash in on the changing nature of childhood in the Big Data era, where Internet-connected toys are linking children to a vast surveillance network,” said Jeffrey Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy. The breach of VTech involved data collected by its Learning Lodge app store, where customers could download games and educational programs for some toys. The company took down the Learning Lodge website Monday. The new “Hello Barbie,” a doll that uses artificial intelligence to learn about children and carry on real-time conversations, was released this month — raising alarm bells for some watchdogs. The doll’s privacy policy acknowledges that manufacturers Mattel and ToyTalk cannot promise the data will stay private. ANDREA PETERSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘We say “no” to hatred’ Pope visits mosque in African city divided by religious violence

BANGUI, C. AFRICAN REPUBLIC Pope Francis made a historic visit to the last remaining Muslim neighborhood in Central African Republic’s capital Monday, a move that almost immediately opened up a part of the divided city troubled for months by retaliatory violence between Muslim and Christian militias. Moments after he left, hundreds of Muslims who had essentially been barricaded inside by armed Christians burst into what had been a no-man’s land only a day earlier. Some jubilant residents even followed the pope into the city center shouting, “The war is over!” — a hopeful sign for potential reunification. The bold visit by the pope, who traveled into the most volatile part of Bangui in his open-air popemobile, underscored his message of faith over fear. He was not without heavy security, though, including armed peacekeepers in the central mosque’s minarets high above the crowds. Francis had insisted on visiting the PK5 neighborhood to appeal for peace in a country

where two years of ChristianMuslim violence has forced nearly 1 million people to flee their homes, including thousands living in a camp at the airport, amid wrecked planes. The neighborhood’s once vibrant markets are now largely shuttered and many of the Muslim-owned businesses stand in ruins. At the Central Mosque, Pope Francis removed his shoes, bowed his head and stood silently at the mihrab, or area of the mosque that faces Mecca. About 200 men seated inside the mosque welcomed Francis, who

sat on a sofa next to the imam. In comments, Francis said that Muslims and Christians are brothers and must treat each other as such. “Christians and Muslims and members of traditional religions have lived peacefully for many years,” the pontiff said. “Together, we say ‘no’ to hatred, to vengeance and violence, especially that committed in the name of a religion or God.” The mosque’s chief imam, Tidiani Moussa Naibi, thanked Francis for his visit, calling it “a symbol which we all understand.” NICOLE WINFIELD, KRISTA LARSON (AP)

‘No nation is immune’

In the opening day of the global climate change summit, Obama urges action now

Climate change a partisan issue in U.S., poll says

The summit will also feature a goal, heavily promoted by India and including 121 countries, of a massive investment in solar power in countries with the greatest amounts of sunlight. “We have broken the old arguments for inaction,” Obama said at the plenary session on Monday. “We have proved that strong economic growth and stable investment no longer have to conflict with one another.” The U.S. announced it will contribute $51.2 million to a $248 million Least Developed Countries Fund to help the world’s poorest countries adapt to climate change. O b a m a i s o ne of a b o ut 150 world leaders at the Paris summit. “A political moment like this may not come again,” said U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. “We have never faced such a test. But neither have we encountered such great opportunity.”

POLITICS A clear but declining majority of Americans say climate change is a serious problem for the U.S., according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, with giant partisan disagreement on all aspects of the issue. The survey, released as world leaders meet in Paris to discuss ways to slow the rise of global temperatures, finds both support and skepticism for major efforts to reduce climate change. Democrats and Republicans continue to have widely different perspectives on the issue. Among Democrats, more than eight in 10 say global warming is a serious problem. Among Republicans, the number is less than six in 10. Sixty-three percent of Americans say climate change is a serious problem facing the country, slipping from 69 percent in June. Just over half say the issue is “very serious,” also dipping by a similar amount. The poll finds that 47 percent of Americans say the federal government should do more to deal with global warming than it does today. Just over half in the survey say there is “a lot of disagreement among scientists” over the existence of global warming, down 11 points from 2009. That belief contrasts sharply with surveys finding that at least 84 percent of scientists agree that the Earth is warming because of human activity. SCOTT CLEMENT

ENVIRONMENT President Barack Obama struck an ominous tone Monday as he sought to rally world leaders at an international climate summit in Paris, declaring that “no nation large or small, wealthy or poor, is immune” to ravages of global warming. He urged the leaders to take action even if the benefits were not evident for generations. Obama, quoting Martin Luther King Jr., warned that “there is such a thing as being too late.” Two weeks after terrorist attacks rocked the city and shocked the world, Obama described the gathering of world leaders as “an act of defiance” and asked: “What greater rejection of those who would tear down our world than marshaling our best efforts to save it?” Obama has already marshalled most of the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitters behind substantial cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, but over the next dozen days international climate negotiators must still nail down the details of an agreement that would strengthen existing commitments and introduce a way for countries to review and expand their commitments in the near future. The negotiations have been slowed by delegates from developing countries who believe that, for all of Obama’s efforts, the United States should do even more to help them grapple with the effects of climate change and lower global emissions. Obama said that “the United States not only recognizes our role in creating this problem, we embrace our responsibility to do something about it.” But he stressed that all nations must act “right now.” With so many world leaders present, the summit also opened chances for top-level dialogue on

other fronts. Sideline talks included a meeting between Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss Syria’s nearly five-year civil war and peace efforts in Ukraine between the Western-supported government and Moscow-backed rebels. The two leaders agreed to relaunch talks to halt the fighting in Syria, but they remain far apart on some key issues. Russia says its military intervention in Syria seeks to cripple ISIS — a mutual enemy of Washington and its allies. But Moscow has heavily targeted rebel factions seeking to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad, a key Russian partner. In Paris, Obama repeated U.S. demands that Assad must eventually step down as part of any political transition. Obama kicked off his day at the Paris gathering with a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, hailing their mutual

Their past academic work has been conducted in the areas of environmental science, environmental education, political science, public administration, architecture, accounting, and marketing, among others, while their employment experience has included positions in real estate, water, investment, information technology, construction, and energy management, to name a few represented sectors. Their previous employers have included PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the National Academy of Sciences, the World Wildlife Federation, DC Greenworks, and the U.S. Department of Energy. And besides multiple locations around the U.S. and its territories, the students call home countries such as Colombia, Malaysia, and Venezuela. The students’ career goals are as varied as their professional histories. Among their several career orientations are sustainable city management, real estate development, sustainability accounting, corporate energy consulting, social entrepreneurship, and smart growth management. And MSSM students have connected their incoming interests, coursework, and careers with internships at such organizations as

the National Association of Homebuilders, Terracycle, VOX Global, the Washington, D.C. Department of Environment, Island Press, and the Environmental Defense Fund. The program emphasizes experiential learning in organizations, understanding the interconnectedness between and among business, government, and nongovernmental organizations, and helping students become globally minded and globally linked through coursework and relationships with international organizations and academic institutions. Kogod’s home in Washington, D.C., provides access to businesses and business associations, federal courts, policymakers, international diplomats, NGOs, local and state agencies, and international institutions. The Sustainability Management students also have the opportunity to gain real-world experience through internships and international study trips. The program is a good fit for AU, as the university is one of the “greenest” in the country, featuring an Office of Sustainability, which sets “greening” goals for the campus. Initiatives include pledges to be carbon neutral and to send zero waste to landfills by 2020. AU itself has been named to the Princeton Review Green Honor Roll (2015), the Sierra Club Top Ten “Cool School” Rankings (2014), and has earned a STARS Gold Rating, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Green Power Leadership Award (2013). The program’s business, science, policy, and international elements are also strengths of AU. “As students in the Masters of Science in Sustainability Management program,” says Starik, “our students will have what it takes to effectively work with organizations that can solve sustainability problems, and to become valuable members of companies that are combining sustainability with business.” For more information, visit www.american.edu/ Kogod.

Alfred Morris had 23 carries Sunday against the Giants, the most he has had since Week 1.

Guide for playoff push

PATRICK SEMANSKY (AP)

No longer unbeatable Weeks ago, the Patriots seemed destined to repeat as Super Bowl champs. But after Sunday’s loss to Denver and a bunch of injuries, New England might no longer be the team to beat. So who is? JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

3 Broncos (9-2) The Broncos may not have Peyton Manning throwing 50 TDs this year, but they do have the only defense that ranks in the top five in passing and rushing.

THE NFC EAST-LEADING REDSKINS (sounds a little strange since they haven’t led the division after 11 games since

1999) have a clear path to the crown with just five games remaining in the regular season. Basically, Washington needs to find a way to have success on the road, win at night and beat rival Dallas to make its first playoff appearance since 2012. Throwing in victories over Chicago and Buffalo wouldn’t hurt, either. Here are five areas where the Redskins must succeed if they are going to make the playoffs this season:

Star at night

Learn how to travel

Produce pressure

Calling long distance

Keep running

The Redskins are 4-18 in prime-time games since coach Joe Gibbs left in 2008. It’s like they’re the victim in a late-night crime show — CSI Redskins. This season, Washington lost to the New York Giants 32-21 at night on Sept. 24. The Redskins have prime-time games remaining against Dallas (Monday) and Philadelphia (Dec. 26). Last year, Washington beat Dallas 20-17 on “Monday Night Football” in the rivalry game that always draws big TV ratings. If the Redskins don’t solve their night woes, “Turn out the lights, the party’s over,” as former MNF broadcaster “Dandy Don” Meredith used to sing.

The Redskins are an NFL worst 1-18 on the road since Week 6 of 2013. They lost their last six games away from FedEx Field under coach Mike Shanahan, and Jay Gruden hasn’t done any better — going 1-7 last year and 0-5 so far this season. Washington, which is 5-1 at home this year, travels to Chicago (Dec. 13), Philadelphia (Dec. 26) and Dallas (Jan. 3). The Eagles and Cowboys may completely collapse by then and not pose much of a challenge, and Chicago (5-6) is oddly 1-4 at Soldier Field. Still, the arctic, midDecember conditions off Lake Michigan could frost Washington’s chances.

The pass rush was supposed to be an asset, but linebacker Ryan Kerrigan has slowly worked his way back to full strength after offseason surgery and Junior Galette was lost for the season to injury in training camp. On Sunday, the Redskins got after Eli Manning — a QB who ravaged Washington during the Giants’ five straight wins in the series; they recorded three sacks and eight hurries. With a depleted secondary and so-so play by linebackers, Washington has no choice but to dial up the blitz. Luckily, the Redskins aren’t facing New England’s Tom Brady and Carolina’s Cam Newton anymore.

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson, who strained his hamstring in Washington’s second series of the season and missed the next six games, has 12 catches for 212 yards and two TDs since his return. He had a 42-yarder against New Orleans, a 56-yard TD vs. Carolina and a 63-yard TD against the Giants (he was so far ahead he had time to dance along the goal line before scoring). Washington even tried him once as a punt returner against the Giants, hoping for a gamebreaking play. Jackson is back in form and quarterback Kirk Cousins has the confidence in him to throw it deep.

The mystery of the season was the disappearance of the running game for eight weeks. But the Redskins were finally playing with a big lead against New York and were able to commit to the ground game. Alfred Morris gained 78 yards on 23 carries — his biggest workload since opening day and more carries than he had in the previous three games combined. Morris has 1,011 career rushes and the pending free agent’s days as the Redskins’ prime back may end soon. Washington needs to use him often, while successor Matt Jones, who’s averaging just 3.6 yards per carry, learns to not fumble.

Titans coach says NFL called late fourth-down play “poorly officiated” in 24-21 loss to Oakland

2 Cardinals (9-2) Arizona is averaging an NFLhigh 32.3 points per game (nearly a point more than the Patriots), while having a top-five rush defense.

1 Panthers (11-0) Cam Newton, who has more rushing TDs (seven) than 15 entire teams, is making a strong case to win MVP as he leads the only undefeated team left in the league.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL When No. 2 Maryland (6-0) takes the court at the Dean E. Smith Center tonight (9:30 p.m., ESPN), the Terps will finally face an opponent with an equally impressive early-season résumé. Their foe in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge will be longtime rival No. 9 North Carolina, which began the season as the top-ranked team in the AP poll. That’s a big step up in competition for Maryland, whose first six opponents had a combined record of 12-24 as of Monday. Despite a rather e asy

schedule so far, Maryland has been plagued by slow starts. The Terps trailed 9-0 before coming back to beat Georgetown and were behind late in the first half Saturday before downing lowly Cleveland State 80-63. “It’s not going to be easy,” Maryland sophomore Jared Nickens said of today’s matchup. “You can’t start off slow, especially in Chapel Hill.” Nickens has been a spark off the bench for Maryland, scoring 16 points, including four 3-pointers against Cleveland State. “He can flat out shoot it,”

Maryland forward Robert Carter Jr., a transfer from Georgia Tech who has played the Tar Heels in the past, said: “We have to work on coming out of the gate aggressively on defense. As long as we are focused … we should come out with a victory.” North Carolina (5-1), which has not played since an 80-70 win over Kansas State on Nov. 24, is expected to get back point guard Marcus Paige, the preseason ACC player of the year who missed the first six games with a broken hand. Fuente plans to build on Beamer’s success New Hokies coach says he’s keeping program’s principles and integrity COLLEGE FOOTBALL Justin Fuente had numerous opportunities to leave Memphis, but said Monday that it wasn’t until Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock offered him the chance to replace the retiring Frank Beamer as coach that he knew it was time to make the move. Fuente, 39, was introduced Monday in Blacksburg, Va., as the new Hokies coach. “We all know you don’t replace a legend in coaching. You hope to build on what he’s done,” Fuente said. “You hope to continue to operate in the same manner with the same principles and same integrity that he’s done for so very many years here.” Fuente spent the past four seasons at Memphis, where he inherited a program that had gone 5-31 over three years. By his third season, the Tigers were 10-3, won a bowl game and finished No. 25 in the top 25, the first end-of-season ranking in program history. This year, the Tigers are 9-3 and bowl-bound again, though Fuente will not be there to coach

them in that game. He won’t coach the Hokies in their bowl game, either; Beamer and his staff with handle those duties. Fuente now will work on recruiting and building a new staff. The former quarterback at Oklahoma and Murray State signed a six-year contract that will start at $3.2 million his first season and climb to $3.65 million by 2021. Fuente said that when other programs reached out in the past inquiring about his interest, he always “nipped it in the bud.” When Virginia Tech reached out, however, his interest was piqued.

“This is absolutely the job I was interested in,” he said, noting that he had long admired the way the team played, the devotion of its fans, the facilities and the Hokies’ status in the ACC. “I’ve always wanted to be a part of something like that.” With many high-profile jobs open, Fuente said he gave no thought to waiting to see what other offers might come his way. “For me personally, there’s a draw to live in this town and be a part of this program that’s gone about things the way I’ve always wanted our program to go about things,” he said. Georgia’s Richt interested in another coaching job

Terps’ Yannick Ngakoue headed for the NFL draft

Mark Richt said Monday he will listen “to anybody who has interest in me” as he prepares for his final game as Georgia’s coach. Georgia announced Sunday that Richt will not return as coach in 2016. The university’s president and athletic director said Sunday that Richt was offered another position at the school that would include helping former players and fundraising for the university. (AP)

Maryland junior defensive end Yannick Ngakoue announced Monday that he will skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft. Ngakoue finished second nationally with 13 ½ sacks, which also set the school’s single-season record. According to Fox Sports’ NFL draft site, he is the eighthbest defensive end in the 2016 class and projects to be picked in the first three rounds. (TWP)

STUDIES SHOW…

DANIEL LIN (DAILY NEWS-RECORD VIA AP)

Diets aren’t one size fits all

Cyclocross participants carry their bikes and jump over barriers during the Rocktown Cyclocross Festival in October at Westover Park in Harrisonburg, Va.

A whole different gear With cyclocross, get an intense workout and enjoy a beer, too CYCLING If you’re into road cycling, you can enjoy it your whole life without entering a race. The same applies to mountain biking. On the other hand, cyclocross is pretty much all about racing — and yet the sport’s laid-back atmosphere is a huge part of its growing appeal. At a cyclocross event held on the fields of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in the District, you’ll find what looks like a big family picnic in the park, with a steady stream of races providing opportunities to break a sweat before cracking open a beer. As longtime participant Becky Frederick said, “This is faster [than mountain biking]. It’s way more social — there’s a party going on with a bike race nearby.” Cyclocross, or “cross,” as many practitioners call it, is indeed something of a cross

between the two better-known forms of cycling. Its arboreal setting calls to mind mountain biking, but it’s more about keeping up a steady pace over rolling (and sometimes muddy) hills, and the bikes themselves look much more like their road cousins. The iconic distinction of cyclocross is that competitors must occasionally sling their bikes over their shoulders and run across certain sections. The origins of cyclocross are somewhat murky, but it’s believed to have originated in the late 1800s with Northern European cyclists looking for ways to stay fit and have fun after the summer racing season ended. The sport is popular in France and the Netherlands, and it is huge in Belgium, which we can thank for the delightful tradition of enjoying beer and french fries at events. For Svetlana Mack, a 17-yearold from Silver Spring who has already spent years competing in various forms of cycling, cyclocross is her favorite, because

“If you do a race correctly, it hurts. It hurts a lot.” BILL SCHIEKEN, cyclocross event organizer and manager of the cyclocross website In the Crosshairs (cxhairs.com), on the intensity of cyclocross races

it’s less focused and serious. “This is the best sport to start with,” Mack said. “Because you have to learn all the technical skills, and then when you get on the road, you have all the bumping and turning, and it’s just safer if you start with cyclocross.” It’s easy to see how someone who hadn’t raced on a bike before would be more inspired to do so while attending a cyclocross race than a road race. The latter can seem intimidating, if not terrifying, with a large group of riders whizzing by in tight formation on an unforgiving surface. Contrast that with

D.C.’s 2015 Dance Fitness Showcase is at Hips Fitness in Annandale, Va., on Saturday

cyclocross, where competitors are spaced more evenly along a less-speedy course and spills usually take them into grass or mud. There’s “much less skin lost in cross,” Frederick said. One of the organizers of the D.C. event, Bill Schieken, said cyclocross is “really an entry point into the sport, and the interesting demographic that we also see is masters, guys in their 40s, that are doing cycling for the first time. And they don’t want to go on the road, they don’t want to crash and be out of work … so they get into cyclocross.” Schieken, 46, also noted the “party atmosphere” but emphasized that races are no joke. “You have to be prepared for anywhere from 40 minutes, in the lower categories, to an hour of all-out effort … with bursts throughout.” Schieken said. “You have to have a high level of fitness … and high-end, VO2-max training, where you’re able to do burst-recover-burst-recover.”

Researchers writing in the journal Cell found that different people’s bodies respond very differently to the same meal — which means that a diet that worked for your friend may not have the same impact on you. They focused on one component used in creating diet plans: the glycemic index, a measure of how a carb-containing food impacts blood sugar levels. That measure has been assumed to be fixed, but it turns out that it varies by person. Researchers asked 800 volunteers to eat the same breakfast, and found participants showed vastly different responses in blood sugar levels, even though their own responses were the same day to day. This suggests meal plans tailored to an individual’s biology may be the future of dieting. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Q. My sister is 16 years younger than me, a high school junior. She says she will likely stay home and go to community college instead of going away. I suspect she’s worried about our parents’ finances and my dad’s health. Why can’t they leave me alone?

Q. I’m in grad school, I work, I’m an active member of my family and I make time for my closest friends. On the rare occasion when I have down time, I like to do things alone, like a solo lunch or not going out on weekends. People around me (e.g., my mom) find it strange that I don’t prefer to socialize. I’m just after a bit of me time. Is that so wrong? HAPPY RECLUSE Absolutely not, and it wouldn’t be wrong even if your schedule was wide open. For you, time alone is rejuvenating, rather than avoidant — and it sounds like it’s exactly what you need right now. You don’t owe your mom an explanation, but if she is the reasonable sort who might finally simmer down after a discussion about it, ask her why it bothers her

so much. Is she simply worried that you’re working too hard? Is this thwarting her plans to see you dating? Might she want to see you more often herself, or is it that she just can’t fathom a more introverted person can actually be happy? If she won’t let up, give yourself permission to tune her out — as you chill on your couch.

Let’s first banish the all-ornone thinking. The realization of plenty of people’s dreams starts with their first step into a community college class. And not everyone who remains in their hometown is destined to a life of unfulfilled potential. Your concerns are legitimate, though, in that she might be unduly limiting herself because of guilt, fear or a sense of responsibility. Have a private, concrete talk with her about the what-if’s of your parents’ future care — logistically, emotionally and financially. Map out as many specifics as you can to make the load lighter. Talk separately to your parents, and really listen to what their expectations and hopes are — for her, for you and for them. Send your questions for Baggage Check to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@ wpost.com. Andrea is a local clinical psychologist and author of the book “The Friendship Fix” (friendshipfix.com).

Rob Schneider based his Netflix comedy on himself, to poor results STREAMING Louis C.K. did it. Aziz Ansari did it. Why not Rob Schneider? Sorry, that should be — why Rob Schneider? The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member, best known for his films in the exalted “Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo” series, now writes, directs and stars as an

exaggerated version of himself on “Real Rob,” which begins streaming today on Netflix. The eight-episode series follows Rob as he balances his career and home life, with his real-life wife Patricia Azarcoya Arce and their two-year-old daughter. “Real Rob” has elements of “Louie” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm’s” heightened reality, but the only thing that sets it apart from its predecessors is that it’s not very good. Group threatens to sue over Jazz Jennings reading Under threat of a lawsuit, a Wisconsin elementary school has canceled a reading of “I Am Jazz,” a book about transgender teen activist Jazz Jennings. The book was to be read at Mount Horeb Primary Center last week because one of its students was born male and identifies as female. Several parents and attorney Richard L. Mast Jr. wrote an open letter to the school last month threatening a lawsuit over the school’s violation of “parental rights.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Porn star James Deen accused of sexual assault

hackneyed. A typical gag finds viewers forced to watch Schneider’s assistant, Jamie (co-writer/ producer Jamie Lissow) endure a phone call while on the toilet with a clear case of food poisoning. The series involves a meta subplot that has Schneider pursuing a multi-camera sitcom about — you guessed it — life with his younger, Mexican wife. When the network suits add unexpected elements to the story, Rob angrily calls his agent, who tells him: “You have to admit you haven’t exactly been very visible in the last couple years.” “I can’t just do stuff, just to do stuff,” Rob counters. It’s a real head-scratching moment, because that’s exactly what “Real Rob” feels like. BETHONIE BUTLER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NEW ALBUMS

Look out for the next ‘Gangnam’ South Korean rapper PSY is set to release his first album since becoming an international sensation more than three years ago with “Gangnam Style.” “Chiljip PSY-Da” — which in Korean means “This Is PSY’s Seventh Album” — comes about a year and a half after the release of his single “Gentleman.” The new album includes songs of various genres, including dance music, hip-hop and punk. (AP)

James Deen, long lauded as the porn industry’s greatest feminist, was accused by three fellow adult film stars of sexual assault over the weekend. Stoya, Deen’s former girlfriend, declared on Twitter that Deen had raped her. Adult film stars Tori Lux and Ashley Fires then told the Daily Beast that they were also sexually assaulted by Deen. On Twitter on Sunday, Deen called the claims “false and defamatory.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

entertainment WASHINGTONPOST.COM STYLE BLOG

In the last few weeks before holiday albums are released and Christmas music takes over the airwaves, top artists who aren’t named Adele snuck in some stellar new recordings. Here is some of the best new pop, country, rap and R&B music that came last month, in case you need some Christmas gift ideas. CHRIS RICHARDS

Ellie Goulding

Eric Church

Ty Dolla $ign

Maren Morris

Young Thug

‘Delirium’

‘Mr. Misunderstood’

‘Free TC’

‘Maren Morris’

‘Slime Season 2’

No contemporary pop singer sounds more contemporary than Goulding does on her third and finest album. You can hear it loud and clear on the album’s most disorienting cut, “On My Mind,” which starts off similar to a recycled Police song, and quickly mutates into the hiccups of a lovesick Transformer.

Country singer Eric Church recently dropped his fifth studio album with no advance warning — an increasingly common practice for pop’s A-listers, but a rarity in Nashville. No surprise: The macho-softie magnetism of Church’s singing, storytelling and song-craft continues to grow stronger with every album.

Can the success of a party be measured by who shows up? If so, all you need to know about this R&B singer’s debut album is that it includes notable cameos from Jagged Edge, E-40, Kanye West, Future, Babyface, Trey Songz, Sevyn Streeter, Diddy, Y.G., Fetty Wap, the kids from Rae Sremmurd and more. Party on.

If we’re to take the standout tune on her eponymous debut EP as fact, Maren Morris, one of country music’s most stylish new voices, is actually an old soul. On “My Church,” Morris sings about catching the holy spirit by surfing the secular airwaves: “Roll down the windows and turn up the God.”

Here comes the Atlanta rapper again with another brain-scrambler, his third mixtape this year, crammed with torqued rhymes, elastic riddles, maniac intellect and infinite wild styles. Last year, Young Thug was showing us what rap could sound like. Now, he seems to be showing us what it should sound like.
