Police suspect doctors were spiking flu shots with something

A UPS worker in Arizona was fired last week after being accused of stealing a diamond worth more than $100,000 and trading it for $20 worth of weed, according to ABC-15 Arizona. Walter Earl Morrison, 20, is accused of stuffing the package under his shirt when unloading a cargo plane, the station reported. It was eventually recovered, and Morrison was charged with felony theft. (EXPRESS)

A New York City postal carrier is accused of failing to deliver more than 40,000 pieces of mail, some dating to 2005. According to a federal court complaint, Joseph Brucato hoarded the mail at his home, car and post office locker. He was arrested Wednesday after a supervisor noticed undelivered mail piled up in Brucato’s vehicle. (AP)

Military police had to intervene last Wednesday in England after 1,800 elderly people overwhelmed a medical center that was giving out flu shots, according to the Telegraph. The flood of pensioners to the Creffield Medical Centre in Colchester caused gridlock on the roads, leading Royal Military Police officers to step in and direct traffic, the newspaper reported. THE DEFINITION: Cats who have postseason Natitude.

TODAY IN HISTORY | On Sept. 30, 1971, the Washington Senators played their last game at D.C.’s RFK Stadium before moving to Arlington, Texas, where they became the Texas Rangers. Rowdy fans didn’t let them go quietly, though. In the top of the ninth inning — with the Senators leading the Yankees 7-5 — hundreds of people poured onto the field, grabbing fistfuls of grass, pocketsful of dirt and other souvenirs. From The Washington Post article that ran Oct. 1: “When first base was lifted and carried away, you could tell it was all over. And so, the final irony: fans lost the game for the Senators, who had to forfeit their last contest here to the Yankees.” R.S.

Dig up that old silver dollar. You’re going to need a big coin to tackle these scratch-offs. To promote the new exhibit “Unearthing Arabia: The Archaeological Adventures of Wendell Phillips,” the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery is coating two billboards with a photo of sand dunes that bored commuters can scratch at with coins or fingernails. “This show is all about an Indiana Jones-type figure in the remote desert of Arabia in the 1950s, who uncovered these great treasures of civilization,” says Sackler spokeswoman Allison Peck. “We thought we should do something where you scratch the sand to find the objects they collected on their trip and cool vintage photos.” They got the idea from the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, which used scratch-off ads earlier this year. The billboards go up Oct. 13 in bus shelters at Seventh and H streets NW and 11th and E streets NW. Stake them out early: “They can only be scratched off once,” Peck says. S.D.

CYNICAL SUMMARY

Researchers at the University of Arizona analyzed food-related tweets and created a buzzy map showing that D.C. tweeters mention guava at a rate greater than the national average. The study’s actual purpose was to predict population characteristics such as diabetes rates.

Charlottesville, Va. Virginia State Police investigators said Monday that the arrest of Jesse Matthew Jr., who allegedly abducted University of Virginia student Hannah Graham, has provided “a significant break” in the case of a young woman who disappeared in Charlottesville, Va., in 2009 and was later found dead. Police said Matthew’s arrest last week has given state police investigators forensic leads to pursue in the abduction and slaying of Virginia Tech student Morgan

Harrington, 20. Harrington’s body was found in a field 10 miles south of town 101 days after she disappeared from a concert at a U-Va. basketball arena. Charlottesville Police allege that Matthew abducted Graham in the early morning hours of Sept. 13. Police and other law enforcement officials would not disclose what evidence they have or how it might be linked to Harrington’s case, but any connection could indicate what many in the community have feared: That an attacker has, over a span of years, preyed on young women on the state’s flagship public campus. disappearances said privately Monday that there are obvious similarities, with both young women vanishing at night while alone in Charlottesville. Harrington’s case also has been linked to an earlier sex assault. In 2010, Virginia State Police announced that Harrington’s case had been linked to a 2005 sexual assault in Fairfax City. Sources told The Washington Post at the time that there was a DNA match between the cases. A 26-year-old Fairfax woman was grabbed by a man as she was walking home from a supermarket around 10 p.m. The man carried the woman to a nearby swimming pool and assaulted her

before running away. The search for Graham is ongoing, and police have scoured the area where Harrington’s remains were found along with a growing swath of rural areas surrounding the U-Va. campus. Matthew was found last week on a beach near Galveston, Texas. It is not clear why Matthew was in that area of the country, approximately 1,300 miles from Charlottesville. He waived an extradition hearing in Texas and was transported to Charlottesville on Friday. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday for a bond hearing. T. AU to foot Metro’s late-night Nats bill

Montgomery County, Md., woman killed in crash with truck

FILE; MARLON CORREA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Metro said Monday it will provide after-hours service from the Navy Yard-Ballpark station for fans attending possible lateending Washington Nationals postseason games in October — but, yet again, the Nats aren’t picking up the tab. Instead, American University has offered to pay for the extra service, should the need arise. Two years ago, when the Nationals headed to the postseason for the first time, the team, the D.C. government and Metro became involved in a standoff, with each side refusing to foot the bill by itself for late-night subway service. Living Social eventually offered to pay, but no weeknight games ran late enough to need it. Not everyone was happy with American’s decision. “So this is where my tuition went?” asked one alumnus on Twitter. (THE WASHINGTON POST/EXPRESS)

Six Flags adds security after fight injures three

D.C.’s streetcar is up and running, sans passengers

The Six Flags America amusement park said it was beefing up security and traffic management efforts Sunday after a parking-lot altercation Saturday night that left three young people injured, one critically. The emergency response to the incident, combined with heavy attendance at the Upper Marlboro, Md., park’s annual “Fright Fest” and a concert at a nearby megachurch, snarled traffic for hours. No one was arrested, despite a heavy police presence. A spokeswoman for Six Flags disputed reports on social media that the altercation was gangrelated. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The District of Columbia’s first modern streetcar is now sharing the road with cars, bicyclists and pedestrians. The D.C. Streetcar began simulated service Monday morning along a 2.4-mile segment in the H Street Corridor in Northeast. The streetcar vehicles are running at their proposed hours between 6 a.m. and midnight Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays, 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturdays, and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays and holidays. There are no passengers in the streetcars yet. That is not expected until at least November.

Doctors say intrauterine devices are more effective than condoms.

Doctors urge IUD use for teen girls Long-term birth control best for sexually active, pediatric group says HEALTH Teen girls who have sex should use IUDs or hormonal implants — long-acting birth control methods that are effective, safe and easy to use, the nation’s most influential pediatricians’ group recommends. In an updated policy, the American Academy of Pediatrics says condoms also should be used every time teens have sex, to provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases that other forms of birth control don’t provide, and to boost chances of preventing pregnancy. Condoms alone are the most common birth control choice among teens, but with typical use they’re among the least effective

methods at preventing pregnancy. Both long-acting methods are nearly 100 percent effective, with lower failure rates than birth control pills, patches and injections, the academy says. IUDs — intrauterine devices — are T-shaped devices containing hormones or copper that are inserted into the womb to prevent pregnancy. Hormone-containing birth control implants are matchstick-size plastic rods placed under the skin of the upper arm. The policy emphasizes that only abstinence is 100 percent effective at preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases and says pediatricians should encourage teens to delay sexual activity “until they are ready.” But since many teens don’t heed that advice, the policy also says pediatricians need to provide birth control guidance. CDC investigates 9 cases of paralysis in children Nine children in Colorado, including some that have tested positive for the Enterovirus 68 illness, also reported neurological symptoms including muscle weakness and paralysis. Colorado health officials say the children were identified between Aug. 8 and Sept. 17 after they developed neurological symptoms that are not commonly associated with Enterovirus 68, which causes severe breathing problems. The CDC said it is investigating the cases in Colorado and has called on health officials nationwide to be on the lookout for similar symptoms. (AP) FERGUSON, MO.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, right, and Abdullah Abdullah, the country’s chief executive, were sworn into office Monday in Kabul.

New Afghanistan leaders take office Ghani promises to be accountable as uneasy partnership takes hold KABUL, AFGHANISTAN Afghanistan swore in Ashraf Ghani as its second elected president on Monday, embarking on a new era with a national unity government poised to confront a resilient Taliban insurgency by signing an agreement with the United States that would guarantee a continuing American military presence. The new president was locked into an uneasy partnership with his defeated rival, Abdullah Abdullah, who became the country’s first chief executive. With a

hug for the cameras, both sides appeared determined to reach across factions and avoid a descent into a political abyss. “We want to be held accountable. I am your leader but I am no better than you. If I make mistakes, you should hold me accountable,” Ghani said in his inauguration speech. The new Afghan government was expected today to sign a security agreement that provides a legal framework for the United States to keep about 9,800 troops in the country to train, advise and assist Afghan national security forces after the current international combat mission ends Dec. 31. WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE SWITCH

Federal officials on Monday announced the arrest of the maker of a popular smartphone app marketed as a tool for catching “cheating” spouses by eavesdropping on their calls and tracking their locations — but that critics have described is a way to help abusers stalk their victims. In announcing the first prosecution of its kind, federal officials said that StealthGenie violated the law by offering the ability to secretly monitor phone calls and other communications. Activists against domestic violence long have urged federal officials to take aggressive action against the tools used by abusers. Though often advertised for monitoring children or suspicious employees, surveillance software often ends up in the hands of people who might beat their wives or girlfriends, activists say. StealthGenie allows buyers the ability to track nearly any movement or utterance of an unsuspecting target. Almost anything on a smartphone is vulnerable, including calendar entries and contacts. Calls can be recorded and listened to later, and the microphone can be activated so that the user can listen to the sounds of a target’s daily life, according to a cached version of the company website, which was not active Monday. The app also plots the movements of a target on an online map. CRAIG TIMBERG

Feds go after high-tech tool used by abusers A member of the Secret Service stands guard Monday at the front door on the North Portico of the White House.

Fence-jumper made it deep into White House Sources: Secret Service officer was overpowered, alarm box muted WASHINGTON The man who jumped the White House fence this month and sprinted through the front door made it farther into the building than previously known, overpowering one Secret Service officer and running through much of the main floor, according to three people familiar with the incident. An alarm box near the front entrance of the White House designed to alert guards to an intruder had been muted at what officers believed was a request of the usher’s office, said a Secret Service official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

AND MATT ZAPOTOSKY

U.S. road-salt supply low, demand high as winter looms

The officer posted inside the front door appeared to be delayed in learning that the intruder, Omar Gonzalez, was about to burst through. Officers are trained that, upon learning of an intruder on the grounds — often through the alarm boxes posted around the property — they must immediately lock the front door. After barreling past the guard immediately inside the door, Gonzalez, who was carrying a knife, dashed past the stairway leading a half-flight up to the first family’s living quarters. He then ran into the 80-foot-long East Room, a space often used for receptions

or presidential addresses. Gonzalez was tackled by a counterassault agent at the far southern end of the East Room. The intruder reached the doorway to the Green Room, a parlor overlooking the South Lawn, according to the three sources. Secret Service officials had earlier said he was quickly detained at the main entry. Agency spokesman Edwin Donovan said the office is not commenting during the ongoing investigation. People jumping over the White House fence has become a more common occurrence, but most individuals are tackled by Secret

Service officers guarding the complex before getting even a third of the way across the lawn. Secret Service Director Julia Pierson has said the breach was “unacceptable” to her, and she is expected to face tough questions about the incident today at a hearing by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. The hearing is likely to cover a number of security lapses by the agency, including new revelations published by The Washington Post about the failure to identify and properly investigate a 2011 shooting attack on the White House. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, chairman of a House Oversight subcommittee on homeland security, said he plans to ask Pierson how an alarm meant to alert officers to intruders could be silenced or turned down. He said two people inside the agency told him that boxes were silenced because the White House usher staff, whose office is near the front door, complained they were noisy. The alarm boxes are key pieces of the agency’s first-alert system. If they spot an intruder, officers are trained to hit the large red button on the nearest box — sending an alert to every post on the complex. CAROL D. LEONNIG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FAIR TRADE?

Bye, Junior; hi, Wi-Fi

Six Londoners were willing to pay the ultimate price for free public Wi-Fi — or at least didn’t read the fine print. In an experiment sponsored by security firm F-Secure, an open Wi-Fi network was set up in a public area. When people connected, they were presented with terms and conditions that included a “Herod clause” — one that offered free Wi-Fi in exchange for the company’s ownership of the user’s firstborn child. Six people clicked through. (THE WASHINGTON POST) Gambling officials: Industry paid $38 billion in taxes last year

Standoff in Hong Kong

THREE POINTERS

Odds to win World Series

In a battle to stop encroaching Chinese rule, protesters are ready for the long haul

China shutters Instagram to stop circulation of protest pics

In addition to umbrellas, protesters have been wrapping themselves in plastic to shield from pepper spray.

VOCABULARY

Umbrella Revolution

THE MEANING: The term is being used to describe the recent protests in Hong Kong calling for greater democracy. THE ORIGINS: Many of the Hong Kong protesters brought their umbrellas, probably to provide shelter from the late September sun. As the situation became volatile, however, the umbrellas served a second purpose: to protect their owners from pepper spray and tear gas. (TWP)

The Hong Kong protests, at a glance SOME HISTORY: China took control of Hong Kong in 1997 after agreeing to a policy of “one country, two systems” that gives the financial hub of 7.1 million a high degree of control over its own affairs and allows residents civil liberties absent on the Communist-ruled mainland. WHY THE PROTESTS? The protesters are unhappy that Beijing has rejected

open nominations for candidates for the first-ever elections for Hong Kong’s leader, promised for 2017. China wants candidates to be chosen by a committee of mostly pro-Beijing tycoons. Some protesters are calling for the city’s unpopular chief executive, Leung Chun-ying, to step down. BEIJING’S DILEMMA: China has to be careful not to crack down too harshly on the Hong Kong protesters, whose free press ensures global visibility, but it is eager to end the protests in order to avoid emboldening mainland Chinese. or disperse the crowds. The coming days could be pivotal for both sides. If the protests continue through Wednesday — the beginning of a two-day holiday in Hong Kong — many believe they could draw in even larger crowds. In a preemptive move, Hong Kong’s leaders announced they were canceling fireworks planned to celebrate Wednesday’s China National Day. Many schools and colleges would remain closed today, officials said. Beijing, meanwhile, has few immediate solutions. “The government has to be careful not to alienate the public,” said Michael Davis, a professor at the University of Hong Kong. And yet, China’s leaders are notoriously reluctant to negotiate — much less reverse themselves — partly for fear it could inspire more mutinies against central rule. WILLIAM WAN AND BRIAN MURPHY (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

Social media users in China were dealt a blow Monday when the country’s Communist rulers blocked Instagram in the wake of protests in Hong Kong. The photo-sharing site had been a way for protesters to send out visual documentation of Hong Kong police charging at them with batons and firing tear gas into crowded streets. The protest photos were accompanied by a barrage of hashtags: #hk, #hongkong, #OccupyCentral, etc. So when the service was turned off within hours of protesters getting tear-gassed, many assumed that Chinese censors had decided it would not be good to let pictures circulate of residents standing up en masse to local authorities. (Internet images pose a greater challenge for Beijing’s censors because they cannot scan for key words such as with written posts, which are closely monitored.) The sudden loss of Instagram in China — it was still available in Hong Kong — drew the ire of Chinese netizens, including some who weren’t even aware of the protest before the shutdown. “No one cared before what was happening over there in Hong Kong,” posted one angry blogger named OhSoCute. “We just wanted to quietly stalk our pop stars and get updates on ball games. But now that you’ve done this we have to care.” WILLIAM WAN

BEIJING Hong Kong’s embattled police defended their use of tear gas but softened their tactics Monday after forceful attempts to quell prodemocracy protests drew tens of thousands more people into the streets in an unprecedented show of civil disobedience. The rapidly escalating demonstrations are aimed at forcing Beijing’s Communist leaders to abandon newly declared powers to weed out any candidates in upcoming Hong Kong elections. Yet many on the streets proclaimed they are fighting for something even bigger: preserving a vision of Hong Kong promised 14 years ago when it reverted to Chinese rule. At the time, Chinese leaders promised a state within a state: allowing special hands-off provisions for Hong Kong such as allowing elections and a degree of self-rule in policymaking. But protesters now accuse China of reneging on the deal and trying to exert its control over every aspect of Hong Kong’s political affairs. The mounting protests present a conundrum for Beijing. Too hard a crackdown could drive more people to the prodemocracy cause and embarrass Chinese authorities who would never permit such a challenge on the mainland. Yet allowing the protesters some room risks encouraging others to question Communist control in other parts of the country over issues such as media freedoms, economic development and minority rights. By sundown Monday, police bolstered their ranks around blockades and cordons at some government buildings, but did not reopen attempts to confront

Manager Matt Williams led the Nationals to the best record in the NL in his first season.

An easy job well done First-year manager Matt Williams has made the most of his opportunity with Nats NATIONALS Look at the talent Matt Williams inherited, the roster the Nationals handed him when they made him their manager — made him a manager for the first time — last fall. They had won 184 games and a division title over two years. “Anybody in the game would have loved it,” Williams said. “I looked at it first and foremost as a great opportunity, with a lot of expectation and some pressure to go along with it.” Look at the issues Williams, 48, faced over the course of the summer. Their franchise player learned two new positions, their biggest star got benched less than a month into the season and their closer imploded in September. “There’s been more sleepless nights than I had anticipated, with some crazy things that have gone on,” Williams said. “That’s part of the fun, though. It’s part of the challenge.” Look at Williams on Sept. 16, encircled by his players, toasting the NL East champions. Depending on your interpretation,

This year’s biggest differences from 2013 Last year under manager Davey Johnson, the Nationals all but disregarded opposing base stealers and ignored advances in defensive positioning. (TWP)

THROWING OUT RUNNERS

Manager Matt Williams tasked bench coach Randy Knorr with controlling the opponents’ running game, allowing Knorr to call pickoffs from the dugout. In 2013, the Nationals threw out an MLB-low 17 percent of attempted base stealers. This year, they’re at an MLB-best 38 percent.

PUTTING ON THE SHIFT

Williams created a defensive coordinator position. Mark Weidemaier aligns infielders, more often with subtle shading than extreme shifts. According to advanced metrics that attempt to quantify defense, the Nationals’ defense cost them 15 runs in 2013; this year, it has saved them six.

Williams had guided them through a regular season that ended Sunday with his emphasis on detail, or he had been carried there by perhaps the deepest, most talented roster in baseball. They couldn’t have done it without him; any manager could have done it. Go ahead

Twins fire manager Ron Gardenhire after 13 seasons

A GOOD LISTENER

Williams empowered and encouraged his coaching staff. Johnson was a brilliant manager, but he always walked into a room convinced he knew better than everyone else in it. Williams delegated and listened, allowing a group of hardworking, smart people to make an impact.

and pick one. “I think more than anything, he kind of stayed out of our way and let us play,” right fielder Jayson Werth said. “He pushed all the right buttons and pulled all the right strings. He did a good job — first-year manager. He was given a good team, though,

and he didn’t screw it up.” The Nationals have gone 38-18 since Aug. 1, becoming dominant once they grew healthy. “We would show spurts, and we’d lose a key guy,” general manager Mike Rizzo said. “We’d overcome that adversity and start playing, and something else would happen. Every time, Matt found a way to plug the hole — be it with his demeanor, his calmness, a bench player stepping up and performing well to allow us to bridge that gap.” Now comes Williams’ next task. Only four rookie managers — Bucky Harris (with the 1924 Washington Senators), Ralph Houk, Eddie Dyer and Bob Brenly — have won the World Series. Williams was handed a team that would have been excellent under many other managers. But over the six-month slog of a baseball season, that team could have frayed in so many different ways. It may have been an enviable job, but that doesn’t mean it was easy.

The Nationals have the best ERA in the majors and scored the thirdmost runs in the NL, but they aren’t the favorites to win it all, according to Las Vegas oddsmakers. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

3 Washington Nationals Record: 96-66; Odds: 9-2

No team has had more wins since the All-Star break, but the lack of an MVP candidate may be why the Nats aren’t the World Series favorites.

2 Los Angeles Dodgers Record: 94-68; Odds: 9-2

In Clayton Kershaw Vegas trusts. The Dodgers ace has led the majors in ERA four straight years. He was 21-3 with a 1.77 ERA this season.

1 Los Angeles Angels Record: 98-64; Odds: 4-1

Eric Fehr and the Caps open the regular season Oct. 9.

Fehr looking for a home Trotz unsure where he’s going to play the Caps veteran forward CAPITALS With the regular season less than two weeks away, Capitals coach Barry Trotz has been tinkering with his opening-night roster — and one name gives him pause. “With [forward Eric Fehr], I’ve had him all over,” Trotz said last week. “He’s sort of that utility guy — you move him all over the place.” Fehr’s versatility sparked Trotz’s internal debate. The 29-year-old natural winger

NFL

FCC could end its support for sports TV blackouts If some federal regulators get their way today, the blackout rule might come to an end. If a stadium fails to sell out for a given game, then the game can’t be shown on broadcast TV — nor, by extension, on cable and satellite TV providers in the same area who carry that broadcast content. It affects a lot of pro football games, which is why it’s also sometimes called the NFL blackout rule. Today, the FCC is expected to repeal the sports blackout rule over the objections of the NFL and its allies. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

played all three forward positions on all four lines last season, including a respectable transition to third-line center. Where Fehr will ultimately slot in this season, however, is contingent on the results of ongoing position battles, chiefly the four-player race for second-line center. “Until they know who that’s going to be, I don’t think I can really have a spot,” Fehr said. “I think there’s a lot of things that need to be decided before they put me somewhere.” One potential landing spot for Fehr is first-line right wing, vacated by Alex Ovechkin after Trotz elected to move the three-time

MVP back to the left side. Advanced analytics of their limited ice time together suggest Fehr’s offensive instincts could mesh well alongside Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. The trio skated together in Washington’s most recent preseason game against Montreal. All Fehr really wants, in the end, is a place to call his own. “The last couple years I’ve learned to just accept it and play and roll with the punches,” he said. “I don’t even know if I have a preference to where I play. I just want to have a spot and consistently play, just not be moving around every night.”

Stewart says he never thought about retiring Tony Stewart said Monday he never considered retiring from racing following the death of Kevin Ward Jr. A grand jury decided last week not to charge Stewart in Ward’s death. The 20-year-old driver was struck and killed by Stewart’s car during a sprint car race on Aug. 9. “This is what I’ve done all my life,” Stewart said. “I love driving race cars, but I think it might change right now as far as how much of it and what I do, but there was never a thought in my head about stopping. That would take the life out of me.” (AP)

Peek into the new Vida

The long-awaited, 30,000-square-foot lifestyle complex at 1212 Fourth St. SE in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood will open this week with a Bang — and an Aura Spa and a Penthouse Pool Club. But the four-level building’s main draw is the sixth location of Vida Fitness. It’s not just a gym but also a community center, where residents can improve their health and socialize, says general manager Richie Poe. Already, 900 folks have signed up for memberships. Here’s what they’ll find inside. VICKY HALLETT (EXPRESS)

1

Water views

As an homage to its location by the Navy Yard, the interior boasts a seafaring theme. There are rope-wrapped pillars beside the front desk — near the Bang Salon — and other nods to nautical, such as porthole windows. From nearly every piece of equipment, exercisers can glimpse the Anacostia River. The best vantage point of all is from the rooftop Penthouse Pool Club, above. This season, members (who pay the base gym rate plus an extra fee) have only a few weeks to enjoy the lounge chairs, fire pits and cabanas around the 60-foot heated pool. Food/bar service, as well as kiddie pool hours, come in 2015.

2

Convenient extras

Need to drive here? Park in the basement garage’s 50 spaces. It’s just $2 for two hours. (Then prices revert to neighborhood norms. So if there’s a baseball game going on, get out!) Parents can drop children off for up to two hours in the Kid Zone, a day care center for ages 9 months to 12 years with an emphasis on fitness programming. It’s $35 a month, regardless of the number of kids or how much they use the service. Moms and dads may want to take advantage of the peace and quiet by spending time in the locker rooms — both the men’s and women’s boast a sauna and steam room, above. (These amenities are coed at other Vida locations.)

3

Tech and other toys

Runners worried about their joints will appreciate the selection of treadmills, which includes both Woodway’s latest models and a new kind, above, from Precor (that’s technically not even on the market yet, Poe says). Both have decks that give a bit, which means less pounding. On all 60 pieces of cardio equipment, exercisers can watch premium channels, play games and order movies on-demand. Let your phone recharge while you work out: Select lockers have outlets tucked inside. And on the third floor, look out for Synrgy360, a unit that combines monkey bars, a rebounder, a jump platform and multiple pull-up grips.

CrossFit Balance Georgetown’s grand opening celebration Friday and Saturday to feature free workouts

4

Class-y moves

The opening schedule features 70 classes, and that number will grow in response to member feedback, Poe says. He expects one early favorite to be cycling — the stadium style studio, above, has 30 Keiser bikes and a virtual reality wall so instructors can teach to routes that appear on screen. Another studio has its own HVAC system, which will allow for Vida’s first hot yoga classes. (It can shift between 73 degrees and 98 degrees in about 15 minutes, Poe says.) Quickie abs classes will be offered at peak times, and Poe hopes to add other short lessons. Possible topics: How to do a Turkish getup, and using a foam roller to improve flexibility.

Want Himalayan salt with that? Tasty6, a new local freshpressed juice company, sprinkles the savory flavoring in most of its lineup of fruit and veggie drinks. The reason? Its recipes follow the teachings of Ayurvedic medicine, which recommends that foods offer all six tastes (sweet, sour, astringent, bitter, pungent and salty). We slurped down several Tasty6 juices — $6.86 each at the Union Station kiosk or $38.94 for a six-pack ordered online — and were fond of the blends, especially Liquid Gold (with carrot, apple, lemon, ginger and salt) and the coconut water/juice combos. BEN CLAASSEN III

having marital trouble. But she always wants her friends to think that everything is perfect. Recently, I’ve seen some stuff that shows that she and her husband are not in a good place. (I’m friends with him on Facebook.) But when I ask her about it, she brushes it off. How do I break through? STANDING BY, DC

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

Fed up, and not taking it anymore Q. My boyfriend’s mother gives us a refrigerator’s worth of food every time we visit. She’s a good cook, but it bothers me that she thinks that we can’t fend for ourselves. My boyfriend says we’d be nuts to turn it down — we both work long hours and it is a help. But I feel like it’s part of a larger pattern of her seeing us as just kids. NO, THANK YOU There’s a difference between leaving empty-handed or with 19 pans of lasagna. The key is to find the sweet spot between feeling like she’s completely stocking your kitchen versus accepting the loving gesture that a home-cooked meal here and there can be. Determining that balance will not just involve quantity of grub, but perspective: Do you

feel smothered by her in other ways? Does your boyfriend get that girlfriend-vs.-mother dynamics can be complicated? Does he expect the food rather than feel grateful for it? Can you give back to her in other ways, so that it feels more reciprocal than a handout? Negotiating your relationship with her starts with communicating better with your boyfriend.

Depending on how specifically you’ve asked her about it, she might get that you know — and she just may not want to talk about it. You can’t force her to open up, and wouldn’t want to. Just convey that you are able and willing to listen, and that you’ll be there whenever she decides to drop the charade. Her reluctance might involve embarrassment that the image she cultivated hasn’t matched the reality, concern that maybe you’ll be caught in the middle or even denial. Give her some control by saying, “I saw Bob’s Facebook posts, and I’m guessing things are tough right now. I won’t keep asking you about it, but if you ever want to talk, I’d love to support you however I can.” If she doesn’t bite, know that you’ve done the best you can — and try not to fuel the flames. Send your questions for Baggage Check to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@ wpost.com. Andrea is a local clinical psychologist and author of the book “The Friendship Fix” (friendshipfix.com).

Does yoga count as ‘physical exercise’? Practitioners question whether their studios should face sales tax MONEY Funny thing about the so-called “yoga tax” that goes into effect in the District on Wednesday. The yoga community is arguing that it shouldn’t apply to yoga. Here’s the Office of Tax and Revenue’s definition of health club businesses that fall under D.C.’s 5.75 percent sales tax extension, according to a press release: “a fitness club, fitness center, or gym the purpose of which is physical exercise.” “But the purpose of yoga isn’t exercise. It’s the union of mind, body and spirit,” says Richard Karpel, president of the Yoga Alliance, a national organization based in Arlington. So, he reasons, yoga studios shouldn’t be subject to the tax. Karpel made this point in a letter to the Office of the Chief Financial Officer in July. He also noted that the state of New York, when dealing with a similar tax in 2012, ruled that yoga could not be considered a form of exercise. Despite the letter and a followup meeting, the powers that be haven’t been swayed. “Yoga is included in it,” says David

Umansky, public affairs officer at the Office of the Chief Financial Officer. “Are they charging for what they do? Then it’s taxable.” At Flow Yoga Center near Logan Circle, owner Ian Mishalove is prepared to follow the law. But he’s holding out hope that the government will change its position. On Monday, Mishalove planned to send council members the results of a survey he conducted on the purpose of yoga in people’s lives. Not one student responded “exercise,” he notes. Instead, they talked about stress relief, mental health and spirituality. In an interview with CQ Roll

Call last week, D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson dismissed the yoga community’s concerns. His view: Yoga studios were part of the wellness coalition that protested the tax, so that was an acknowledgement they were going to be affected by it. Karpel disputes this reasoning. The protests were part of a public policy debate, he says, and the yoga studio position was “don’t tax wellness.” They lost that one. “Now it’s a legal argument,” Karpel says. “You passed a law with specific words, and we’re saying those words don’t apply to us.” VICKY HALLETT (EXPRESS)

Dunham shares, but not too much BOOK REVIEW Halfway through her new book, “Not that Kind of Girl,” out today, Lena Dunham says, “I live in a world that is almost compulsively free of secrets.” The “Girls” creator makes public so much about herself that most would never share with strangers. But what’s most interesting about this collection of essays is how carefully constructed her revelations are and what she manages to keep to herself. She tells-almost-all in the service of explaining to other women what she’s learned — that’s the subtitle: “A Young Woman Tells You What She’s ‘Learned’ ” — so that their menial jobs might be easier or their heartbreaks less debilitating. The book is funny, even though it catalogues a lot that is not funny at all, including struggles with anxiety and a sexual

experience that, in her final analysis, was not consensual. But there are humorous episodes: She describes filming sex scenes that end with the discovery of a prop condom in an unfortunate anatomical location, and even shares her first AOL screen name. I wondered if Dunham might use this essay collection to address the criticism of her TV show, which is that the chronicle of young women in New York could use diversity. But she doesn’t, so the references to the show alongside her privileged upbringing stand out even more. Dunham tells her readers so much that it seems silly to hope for more. But because this very inviting voice has spilled intimacies on every page, I want her to keep talking. Just about something different, perhaps even more personal. RACHEL DRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)
