Back in the news

You name them ...

MONTHS AGO …

... and they’ve probably piped up about what should be done about the Redskins name. As The Washington Post’s Dan Steinberg wrote earlier this year: “There are only about 17 people left to survey. Next up will be James W. Sylvester, 59, of Sheboygan.” Here is a smattering of the wide range of people — from the relevant to the random — who have weighed in on the issue this summer alone. KEEP IT Sarah Palin: Grizzly mama says leave off “Washington” and “I’ll agree the team name is a great source of pride.”

Mike Ditka: ESPN columnist and NFL coach calls the debate “so stupid it’s appalling.” Random fugitive: Bail jumper Jake Close tells a newspaper they should keep the name, and make the mascot a potato. Police find him. Redskins Pride Caucus: A group of Virginia state delegates decide the name debate should be part of their platform. Dan Rather: The veteran news anchor says the name shouldn’t change. “No. Straight answer.”

Environmental activists mulled suing the U.S. Transportation Department, claiming the proposed light-rail Purple Line would affect the Hay’s Spring amphipod. The endangered shrimp-like creature is thought to only be found in Rock Creek Park. They filed suit Tuesday.

CHANGE IT Hillary Rodham Clinton: “It’s insensitive.” Drake: The rapper takes a jab at the name at the ESPY awards.

WEEKS AGO …

Eric Holder: The attorney general says the name is offensive and should be changed. Mike Carey: The longtime NFL referee reveals he has avoided officiating Redskins games for eight seasons. Washington Times columnist Michael Taube: Change it to the “Washington Reagans.”

Giant-cupcake purveyor Crumbs Bake Shop went out of business and shuttered its 48 stores, including three in D.C. Now, Fischer Enterprises, owner of Dippin’ Dots, has completed its purchase of the chain and said it plans to reopen many of its locations. No word on which yet.

REBALANCING ACT

The number of computer scientists and mathematicians around the world trying to solve the complex problem of rebalancing bikeshare stations, The Atlantic reports, citing a Science magazine article. Researchers are testing new algorithms that could improve the process of ensuring that cyclists don’t face too-full or too-empty stations. Earlier this summer, Capital Bikeshare said it uses a real-time data feed to direct 10 vans, which stay on the road for 20 hours each day in an attempt to keep docks optimally stocked. R.S.

We can’t recall the last day without either drama or a new service from Uber. According to The Verge, Uber recruiters are using burner phones to request rides from competitors like Lyft, then trying to convince drivers to switch allegiances. Uber is now also testing lunch delivery. R.S.
