FBI opens Mo. killing investigation FERGUSON, MO. A black teenager who was fatally shot by a police officer had his hands raised when the officer approached him with his weapon drawn and fired repeatedly, according to two men who said they witnessed the shooting, which sparked a night of unrest in suburban St. Louis. The FBI opened an investigation Monday into the death of Michael Brown, 18, who police said was shot multiple times Saturday after being confronted by a white officer in Ferguson. Authorities were vague about what led the officer to open fire, except to say that the shooting was preceded by a scuffle. It

was unclear whether Brown was involved in the altercation. Phillip Walker said he was on the porch of an apartment complex overlooking the scene when he heard a shot and saw a white officer with Brown on the street. Brown “was giving up in the sense of raising his arms and being subdued,” Walker said Monday. The officer “had his gun raised and started shooting the individual in the chest multiple times.” Dorian Johnson offered a similar account, telling WALB-TV that he and Brown ran away from the police officer before Brown put his hands in the air. The St. Louis County Police Department refused to discuss Johnson’s remarks, citing the investigation. But county Police Chief Jon Belmar previously said an officer encountered Brown

#IfTheyGunnedMeDown THE TWITTER CAMPAIGN: Black Twitter users are posting contrasting photos of themselves (example: a graduation pic next to one of the person flashing the middle finger) and asking what photo the media would use to represent them. THE REASON: It’s a response to how Michael Brown was portrayed in the news. Rather than using a flattering photo, some showed him in a menacing pose.

3 people stranded on sailboat in Hawaii rescued

Report: La. tricked hospital into selling execution drug

A container ship crew on Monday rescued three people who were stranded in a sailboat off the Hawaiian islands for about 24 hours as Hurricane Julio battered their vessel with giant waves and high winds that ripped off one of its hatches. The sailors were in good condition, Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer Gene Maestas said. The three people got into trouble while sailing the 42-foot Walkabout from California to Hawaii, Maestas said. The Louisiana Department of Corrections in January bought drugs for an execution from a hospital without telling it what the drugs were to be used for, according to a report by The Lens, an investigative news website. Officials at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital told KPLC-TV that “at no time” did the hospital think it was supplying hydromorphone for the execution, which was scheduled for February but postponed for unrelated reasons. and another man, and that one of the men pushed the officer into his squad car and they struggled over the officer’s weapon. The family had planned to drop their son off at a technical college Monday to begin his studies. “Instead of celebrating his future, they are having to plan his funeral,” said Benjamin Crump, a family attorney. “I don’t want to sugarcoat it,” Crump added. Brown “was executed in broad daylight.” The FBI is looking into possible civil rights violations arising from the shooting, said Cheryl Mimura, a spokeswoman for the FBI’s St. Louis field office. Meanwhile, 32 people were arrested following a candlelight vigil Sunday night after crowds looted and burned stores and vandalized vehicles. JIM SALTER AND JIM SUHR (AP)
