A semitrailer overturned Friday on an Indianapolis interstate, spilling what police say are 45,000 pounds of packages of butter and other dairy products. The crash left perhaps thousands of butter tubs strewn on the highway, many broken open and coating the roadway. Cleanup crews used a small front-end loader to scoop the butter tubs and whipped cream containers into large trash bins. No injuries were reported. (AP)

Two rallies draw thousands to D.C. WASHINGTON Demonstrations drew thousands of people from around the country to the White House and the streets of downtown D.C. on Saturday afternoon in peaceful protests.

In one, participants called for an end to the continued violence between Israel and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. At the same time, advocates converged in the District to urge President Barack Obama to take administrative action on issues involving undocumented immigrants. Both groups ended up at the White House in the afternoon, seeking a stage to voice their concerns.

The larger group, supporting the Palestinians, arrived by bus from big cities and many others drove hundreds of miles to participate, organizers said.

“Free, free Palestine, killing children is a crime,” the crowd chanted. Several people held Palestinian flags, boxes representing coffins or posters with graphic images of the wounded.

As the protest quieted down, red graffiti that read “Free Gaza” was discovered on a side wall of the Washington Post building.

At the same time, hundreds gathered — first at the Mall, and then at Freedom Plaza and at the White House — to push for immigration-policy reform.

Protesters chanted in English and Spanish, “Stop deportation,” “Sin papeles, sin miedo” (no papers, no fear) and a familiar chant of Obama’s campaign slogan “Si se puede” (yes we can).

Utility officials say they understand that charging more for water because demand has dropped violates the basic premise of

Economics 101. But utilities that charge by the number of gallons used are beginning to feel the pinch of 20 years of environmentally friendly appliances, as older bathrooms and kitchens have been remodeled, utility experts say.

Federal laws aimed at conserving water limit toilets that once needed up to seven gallons per flush to 1.6 gallons. Shower heads that spewed up to eight gallons per minute are being replaced with sprays of about 2.5 gallons.

Israeli strike near U.N. school kills 10 RAFAH, GAZA STRIP An Israeli airstrike landed outside a United Nations school in southern Gaza on Sunday, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 30, as Israel said it had withdrawn most of its ground forces but would continue its military operation in the coastal strip.

A spokesman for the U.N. Relief and Works Agency said the blast occurred outside the school in the southern border city of Rafah while about 3,000 Palestinians, who had fled their homes and were seeking refuge, were waiting in line for food and other supplies.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called Sunday’s attack a “moral outrage and a criminal act,” while the U.S. State

Department also condemned the attack.

Peter Lerner, an Israeli military spokesman, confirmed the bulk of ground troops had been pulled out of Gaza after the military concluded it had destroyed most of Hamas’ tunnel network.

Lerner said, however, the operation was not over and that Israel would continue to target Hamas’ rocket-firing capabilities and its ability to infiltrate Israel.

Stanford team says it’s making a better battery

Toledo goes without tap water for a second day

Gay-rights activists are distressed over the results of the first large-scale federal survey measuring sexual orientation in the United States, in which it reported in July that less than 3 percent of the population identifies as gay, lesbian or bisexual.

They contend it is an undercount and are particularly upset because they worked for years to get sexual orientation added to the National Health Interview Survey, the government’s premier measure of Americans’ health statuses and behaviors. The activists worry that the results will reduce the urgency of their causes and give fodder to their political foes. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A group of Stanford researchers including former Energy Secretary Steven Chu says it’s building a new and improved pure lithium battery using nanotechnology that could triple cellphone battery life and give electric cars a driving range of 300 miles on a single charge, according to USA Today. Yi Cui, a professor at Stanford working on the project, said it will take three to five years to bring the new battery to the market, according to the newspaper.

In a university statement, Chu, a former Nobel Prize winner, said the new battery could lead to “an electric vehicle with a 300-mile range that cost $25,000.” (EXPRESS)

Long lines formed at water distribution centers over the weekend and store shelves were quickly emptied of bottled water after Toledo, Ohio, told residents not to drink from its water supply that was fouled by toxins possibly from algae on Lake Erie. On Sunday, Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins instructed the 400,000 people in the region to avoid drinking tap water for a second day, as more tests were needed to ensure water was safe to consume.

The National Guard had produced 33,000 gallons of drinkable water by Sunday morning, and an additional 15,000 gallons had been delivered in collapsible containers. (AP)

U.S.-Africa summit has D.C. awash in VIPs, all in need of presidential suites THE DISTRICT August can be a lazy, laid-back month for any Washingtonians left in town and for hotels bereft of conventions and Congress.

Not this week.

Today, delegations from 51 African nations begin a threeday U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, a high-level event hosted

by President Barack Obama that has many downtown hotels jammed and some African embassies detailing their guest rooms. Locals, meanwhile, are rearranging commutes to cope with rolling street closures and motorcade gridlock.

About 5,400 people are credentialed to participate, primarily African delegates, government officials and business leaders, plus more than 1,200 journalists, says Will Stevens, a spokesman for the State Department Bureau

In fact, the nature of Ebola — which is spread by close contact with bodily fluids and blood — means that any modern hospital using standard, rigorous, infection-control measures should be able to handle it. Still, Emory won’t be taking any chances.

Inside the unit, patients are sealed off from anyone who doesn’t wear protective gear.

“Negative air pressure” means air flows in, but can’t escape until filters scrub any germs from patients. And all gear is safely disposed of or decontaminated.

“Nothing comes out of this unit until it is noninfectious,” said Dr. Bruce Ribner, who will be treating the patients. “The bottom line is: We have an inordinate amount of safety associated with the care of this patient. And we do not believe that any health care worker, any other patient or any visitor to our facility is in any way at risk of acquiring this infection.”

TECHNOLOGY Resurrect Tupac for a live performance? Been there. Help elect a prime minister in the world’s second-most populous country?

Done that. Next stop? Washington.

Holographic technology is coming to the nation’s capital.

The hope is to do for political campaigns, what it’s done for the entertainment industry and elected officials overseas: Allow people to project moving, lifelike, interactive copies of themselves in different places without actually being there.

Hologram USA, a company specializing in the technology, recently hired the Northern Virginia-based U.S. Government Relations International. The firm will try to convince wouldbe clients that Hologram USA’s three-dimensional images, which can be broadcast live across the country, are vital communications tools that have become more necessity than novelty.

Hologram USA wants to eventually do the same thing for Rand Paul or Hillary Rodham Clinton — David says he’s a fan of both — or anyone else who runs for office and is looking to improve their voter communication efforts.

It works like this: Invisible foil is placed at an angle across a stage, and a moving image of someone — say, a candidate delivering a live speech — is projected onto it. With the right lighting, the result is a 3-D projection that moves, talks, even dances like a real human being.

Jeffrey Taylor, a managing partner at U.S. Government Relations International and former congressional aide, envisions 2016 conventions where holograms of Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy address the crowd. Or presidential candidates — who simply can’t appear physically in every city — interacting with voters on the campaign trail.

Take Clinton, for example. She

could appear remotely, fielding questions in a kind of virtual town hall meeting, Taylor suggested.

“You would actually have an interactive, three-dimensional image and a monitor in front of her when the lady at a coffee klatch says, ‘What are your views on energy?’ ” Taylor said.

He added: “The only thing you can’t do is shake her hand.”

But that’s a challenge advocates of the technology will have to overcome, experts say. Retail politics is a big part of campaigning. Voters want to see candidates in person. Technology, no matter how advanced, is never going to offer a perfect replacement.

To David, the technology’s best selling point is the awe it inspires when people experience it for the first time.

“I think that as much as we can write about it and evangelize it and imagine it and see it online, you don’t get the impact of what it’s really like until you see it,” he said.

To fix the Redskins’ defense, Gruden and Haslett put an emphasis on the pass rush REDSKINS Unleashed. That’s how many of the Redskins’ defensive players have described themselves and defensive coordinator Jim Haslett since Jay Gruden took over as coach in January.

The players started using that word after hearing what Haslett had planned for the defense as the Gruden Era kicked off. They continued using it during the offseason practices, where they got a taste of things to come. And they say “unleashed” remains an accurate description based on what they have taken away from training camp.

“We have a defense this year that’s more tailored to our strengths, and that’s going to make us more effective,” nose

Added outside linebacker Brian Orakpo: “We’ve got more freedom now. We’re going to be more aggressive. We’re going to dictate. We like where we’re headed.”

In four years under Mike Shanahan, Haslett drew the ire of Redskins fans because of his unit’s ineffective pass rush and inability to create turnovers and game-changing plays.

But when Gruden pored over hours of game film, studying the defense and Haslett’s coaching, he saw two things: Washington’s defense had glaring talent deficiencies in key areas, and Haslett’s strategy wasn’t bad.

But the approach in some areas needed to change.

Haslett had no problem with Gruden’s conclusions. So Gruden and Haslett reached an agreement on a defensive philosophy, starting with getting their passrushers into the backfield.

“Your two best players on your defense are supposed to be your outside linebackers,” Haslett explained Friday. “And that’s why we drafted another one.

And they’re supposed to get to the quarterback, so, let them do what they do best. That’s rush.”

The U.S. men’s national team, too emotional to finish the exhibition game it was playing when George suffered the gruesome injury Friday night, had to shift its focus away from the World Cup of Basketball to thinking about an injured teammate.

The Indiana Pacers, a round short of the NBA Finals the past two years, were left pondering a season without their best player.

“Any discussion regarding the future of our team would be inappropriate at this time,” Pacers President Larry Bird said in a statement. “Our focus is solely on Paul and doing whatever we can to help.”

Naked is the new black in reality TV TELEVISION A contestant on a new VH1 dating show didn’t beckon a woman to walk in front of him out of politeness. He wanted to check her out from behind and didn’t need to use his imagination.

“Dating Naked” is the latest example of reality television’s newest trend: Nudity is hot, no longer confined to late-night premium cable.

Leading the way is Discovery’s “Naked and Afraid,” on which a man and woman who don’t know each other fend for themselves in the wilderness for three weeks without a stitch between them.

That program’s success begat VH1’s “Dating Naked” and TLC’s real estate show “Buying Naked,” with more in the planning stages.

In a world of endless choices, titillation lures. So does a catchy title, and the word “naked” jumps off the program guide. Brent

Montgomery, who produces the nonfiction hit “Pawn Stars,” which airs on the History channel, said many early fans were drawn in by that title even though the show had nothing to do with the image left in your head.

Standards are the same at each show: male and female genitalia are blurred out, along with female breasts. Backsides are fair game. A graphic artist takes about a week to cleanse each episode of “Naked and Afraid.”

A strategically placed flowerpot or sofa obscures the nude home shoppers in “Buying Naked.”

Beyond the logistics, a show needs more going for it to keep viewers once the novelty of watching naked bodies with blurred body parts wears off.

“The secret sauce of our show is not the fact that they’re naked,” said Denise Contis, West Coast head of production and development at Discovery. “I think it’s the storytelling, the cast and a survival experience that’s authentic.”

Buying in to the buff Here’s a rundown of how the nude craze has paid off for reality networks. (EXPRESS) ‘Dating Naked’ The series premiere last month earned more than double VH1’s usual audience, and helped the name of a spurned dater trend on Twitter.

‘Naked and Afraid’ The show’s June 2013 debut drew in more than 4 million viewers, making it Discovery’s most-watched series premiere ever.

‘Buying Naked’ The show’s June premiere ratings aren’t available, but it certainly generated buzz for Pasco County, Fla., the “Nudist Capital of America.”

“Dating Naked.” Susan Levison, head of programming at VH1, gave the series a green light her first day on the job last September and hurried to beat competitors to the air. Fox has its own naked dating show in the works but recently put it on hold.

“The idea of using nudity as a metaphor for allowing yourself to be truly exposed and truly yourself in the search for love felt really fresh and exciting,” Levison said.

That explains why more “naked” pitches are being heard in network boardrooms.

“You’ll probably see four or five work and a dozen that don’t work,” Montgomery said.

This scripted series follows a real-life comedy-folk duo (Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci) as they navigate blind dates and obnoxious exes, alongside goofy music videos and more than enough dirty jokes.

Yeah, technically — er, I mean LEGALLY — it would be against the law. But when I see a dime on the street, I pick it up. Sure, it belongs to someone else, but it’s ON THE STREET! Tell that to the judge.

“Bait Car” is a TruTV series I’d never heard of until the New York Times’ “Ethicist” column wrote about it this summer, deeming bait cars, either in real life or on reality TV, “questionable” and “problematic.” (Note: Many bait car thieves turn out to have criminal records.)

“Bait Car” aired its fifth

season in 2012 and is no longer in production. But the brilliance that is “Bait Car” lives on in reruns and in snippets on YouTube and trutv.com. In one, three women, unknown to each other, bond when they unite to steal a Cadillac Escalade. One complains that the vehicle is dirty. “Maybe she shouldn’t be stealing cars in her Sunday best,” comments the smug narrator.

In other clips, you can see a thief kick his way out of the rear window and run really fast (but not fast enough), and a thief who tells the cops: “Hey, I don’t know whose car it is.”

Points for honesty. But as they say in Yiddish, “gornisht helfen” — it won’t help.

The New York Post reported that the tour organizers and four lawyers attended an emergency meeting on Thursday to put out a joint statement on the situation, but Beyonce and Jay Z couldn’t agree on what it would say. The couple’s lawyers have joined them on the road in hopes that the two can work things out before HBO’s special on the tour, which is set to air in September. (EXPRESS)

Justin Bieber had Orlando Bloom banned from a Friday party in Ibiza, Spain, The New York Post reported. Bloom arrived at the party after Bieber, and Bieber’s entourage pressured the party’s organizers to not allow Bloom in.

The two have been feuding since last week, when Bloom allegedly hit Bieber after Bieber made an impolite remark about Bloom’s ex-wife, Miranda Kerr. (EXPRESS)
