Washington Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s whirlwind year has included the following: captivity in Pakistan, an exchange for Taliban officials in Afghanistan that yielded his freedom, and a highly publicized and politicized debate about whether the Obama administration botched the handling of his case. Now, it will include the following, too: an active-duty unit. Army officials confirmed the move on Monday morning, saying the sergeant has completed the final phase of his reintegration process and will be assigned to a desk job

at U.S. Army North and Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. Bergdahl’s exact administrative duties were not immediately disclosed, but a Pentagon spokesman, Army Col. Steve Warren, said Bergdahl is not restricted in any way. The Army said that in his assignment to U.S. Army North he “can contribute to the mission,” which is focused on homeland defense. “He is a normal soldier now,” Warren said. Bergdahl’s case is one of the most extraordinary of recent times — for the length of his captivity, for his apparent decision to abandon his unit during a combat deployment, and for the controversy triggered by the circumstances of his release May 31. Bergdahl walked away from his unit after expressing misgiv-

It’s not clear when Bowe Bergdahl will face investigators on the disappearance probe, the findings of which will help determine whether the 28-year-old is prosecuted for desertion or faces any other disciplinary action. The probe is headed by Maj. Gen. Kenneth R. Dahl, deputy commanding general of 1st Corps at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state. Oops: Seattle Attorney Breaks Rules by Bringing Weed to Office Last week, as legal marijuana went on sale in Washington state, the Seattle city attorney celebrated the occasion by purchasing four grams. Well, it turns out he broke the rules by bringing said marijuana back to his office, so now he’s apologizing. The city of Seattle’s official policy is that its workplaces are drug free, which means that city employees are not allowed to possess or use controlled substances on the premises. They also cannot possess a controlled substance while

out on city business. Holmes issued a statement on Friday afternoon, apologizing for bringing the unopened marijuana back to his offices and violating these rules. Unexplained rash? Check your iPad. It turns out the popular tablet computer may contain nickel, one of the most common allergyinducing metals. Recent reports in medical journals detail nickel allergies from a variety of personal electronic devices. But it was an Apple iPad that caused an itchy body rash in an 11-year-old boy recently treated at a San Diego hospital, according to a report in Monday’s Pediatrics. The boy had a history of skin issues, but a different rash developed and wouldn’t respond to typical treatment. His skin tested positive for nickel, and doctors traced it back to an iPad he had used with increasing frequency the past six months. The iPad tested positive for nickel as well, the report said.

According to the article in Pediatrics, the boy was advised to use the Smart Case, “which provides overall coverage of the iPad.” When he did that, the rash improved. Whether all iPad models contain nickel is uncertain; an Apple spokesman declined to comment. Nickel rashes aren’t life-threatening but they can be very uncomfortable, and they may require treatment with steroids and antibiotics, said Dr. Sharon Jacob, a dermatologist at Rady Children’s Hospital, where the boy was treated. Church of England Rules for Women London The Church of England ended one of its longest and most divisive disputes Monday with an overwhelming vote in favor of allowing women to become bishops. The church’s national assembly, known as the General Synod, voted for the historic measure, reaching the required two-thirds majority in each of its three different houses. Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said the long-awaited change

Moving On Up Monday’s vote marks the latest advance of women in the church hierarchy. The General Synod ruled in 1975 there was no objection to women becoming priests, but it took nearly two decades for the first women to be ordained. Things are likely to move faster for aspiring female bishops. Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby told the BBC that he expects the first female bishop in the Church of England by next year. He was less sure when asked if there will be a female Archbishop of Canterbury in his lifetime: “I’ve no idea. I’d be delighted if I did.” (AP)

He called for tolerance and love for those traditionalists who disagree with the decision. “As delighted as I am for the outcome of this vote I am also mindful of whose within the church for whom the result will be difficult and a cause of sorrow,” he said in a statement. British Prime Minister David Cameron called it a “great day for the Church and for equality.” Opponents argued that allowing women into such a senior position in the church goes against the Bible. Israel, Hamas Consider Cease-Fire Jerusalem Egypt presented a cease-fire plan Monday to end a week of heavy fighting between Israel and Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip that has left at least 185 people dead, and both sides said they were seriously considering the proposal. The late-night offer by Egypt marked the first sign of a breakthrough in international efforts to end the conflict. Hamas’ top leader in Gaza confirmed there was “diplomatic movement,” while Israel’s policy-making Security Cabinet was set to discuss the proposal early today. Arab foreign ministers discussed the plan Monday night at an emergency meeting in Cairo, and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was expected in the region today. Israel launched the offensive

July 8, saying it was a response to weeks of heavy rocket fire out of Hamas-ruled Gaza. The Health Ministry in Gaza said 185 people, including dozens of civilians, have been killed, and more than 1,000 people wounded. There have been no Israelis killed, although several have been wounded by rocket shrapnel, including two sisters, ages 11 and 13, who were seriously hurt Monday. Ahead of the Egyptian

announcement, there appeared to be no slowdown in the fighting, with Hamas for the first time launching an unmanned drone into Israeli airspace that was shot down. Israeli officials have said the goal of the military campaign is to restore quiet to Israel’s south, which has absorbed hundreds of rocket strikes, and that any ceasefire would have to include guarantees of an extended period of calm. Hamas officials say they will not accept “calm for calm.” The group is demanding an easing of an Israeli-Egyptian blockade that has ground Gaza’s economy to a standstill and that Israel release dozens of prisoners who were arrested in a recent West Bank crackdown. Both sides have come under increasing international pressure to halt the fighting. JOSEF FEDERMAN AND MAGGIE MICHAEL (AP)

Blocking a Streetcar Will Cost You EVA RUSSO (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

They aren’t in service yet, but impeding the tracks is a $100 fine Washington You still can’t board a streetcar in D.C. but as of Monday you can get a ticket for blocking the path of one. The District Department of Public Works will begin ticketing and sometimes towing vehicles along H Street and Benning Road NE that are parked in a way that impedes the path of the streetcars, which will be running along the route in a continuation of their testing phase. Enforcement of the parking

A new streetcar sits on the rails on H Street NE, near the Fourth Street NE crossing.

rules — consistent enforcement — will be a key to successful streetcar operations. Unlike buses, the streetcars can’t veer around parked cars to get into another lane. Without tough enforcement, it will be easy to throw the District’s first modern

streetcar operation off schedule. It’s still just a test, because the District has yet to announce a start date for the long-delayed service. The car barn, which will serve as a maintenance facility, is still under construction.

The fine for blocking the path of the streetcar is $100. Tickets issued up to this point have just been warnings. A driver could get the ticket for double parking in such as way as to overlap with the streetcar route, or parking outside the white lines that mark the borders of legal spaces. A ticketed vehicle could also be towed to a nearby street, out of harm’s way. The definition of “blocking the path” is a bit broader than just parking on top of the tracks. It includes sitting your vehicle on any part of the area where streetcars operate, including the concrete slab in which the tracks are embedded. ROBERT THOMSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Bill Would Ban School Suspensions in Pre-K The District’s traditional and charter schools would be prohibited from expelling or suspending pre-kindergartners in most circumstances under new legislation that D.C. The move comes in response to a recent city report on school discipline that showed that 3- and 4-year-olds received out-of-school suspensions 181 times during the 20122013 school year. “That’s ridiculous,” said Grosso. Arlington to Vote on Pub-Crawl Crackdown Arlington’s pub crawls may soon be less freewheeling. If, as expected, the board members approve the change, bars could be charged for police patrols and trash cleanup. (TWP)

Beer Tourism Is Brewing in Va. Loudoun County, Va. First came the wine lovers, flooding dozens of Loudoun County, Va., tasting rooms in search of favorite local varietals. Next came the foodies craving a gourmet bite to accompany their glass of cabernet franc. Now, with an exponential rise in the number of local craft breweries across Loudoun, fueled in part by a new state law that grants farmbased breweries the same privileges as their winery counterparts, Loudoun has identified its latest tourism target: beer lovers. As the number of craft breweries and nanobreweries in Northern Virginia has soared over the past few years, beer enthusiasts in Loudoun have helped lead the charge, capitalizing on the newly relaxed regulation.

One member, Jim Graham, said he considered whether funding for the homeless might be revisited in light of a Washington Post investigation published Sunday into the state of the D.C. General family shelter. But Graham said he was not convinced further negotiation with the Gray administration would be fruitful. “I can’t count on the people on the other side of the table,” he said. To sustain the veto, Gray would have needed to persuade five of the council’s 13 members to oppose the override. Gray, who lost a re-election bid in the April 1 Democratic primary, acknowledged Friday that the council was likely to kill the veto, but he said he felt compelled to speak up for his priorities. Leesburg police said Monday they would move forward with charges in an alleged shoplifting case in which a Target security officer said he lost his job when he reported the alleged incident. The police in a news release Monday also said the suspect was “positively identified as a Fairfax Sheriff’s Office employee” and that they had notified the sheriff’s office of the allegations on May 30, three days after the second alleged incident at the Target store. Police said they had been waiting on Target to decide whether to pursue prosecution. The charges will not affect the firing of Dallas Northington, the former assets protection specialist for Target who said he was terminated on June 3 after reporting two shoplifting incidents, and providing surveillance video for both, to the Leesburg police. Husband-Wife Team Dermatologist Noelle Sherber, 35, and plastic surgeon Ariel Rad, 42, recently opened Sherber + Rad, which has a retail store with skin-care treatments in the front and sleek offices with private waiting and treatment rooms in back. (And of course they offer a secret entrance for patients who require absolute privacy.) Sherber offers laser work and fillers, which require minimal recovery time. Her husband performs plastic surgery for those looking for more permanent results. (T WP)

Washington It’s the worst-kept secret in Washington: Some of those glowing faces returning from vacation are the result of a doctor, not a few days off. Summer, especially in an election year, is prime time for plastic surgery and other cosmetic fine-tuning. Not that anyone here admits it. In the magical world of politics, public officials and talking heads are genetically blessed with hair that never turns gray, babysmooth foreheads a nd ba rely a ny wrinkles. D.C. is all about subtle improvements. Power brokers in the nation’s capital want to look like themselves, but the rested, most attractive version of themselves. The ultimate goal, as one customer said, is to look “relevant.” “Patients come to us and say, ‘People are saying I look tired or upset, when actually I’m not feeling those emotions at all,’ ” says plastic surgeon Ariel Rad, citing drooping eyebrows that look sad, weak jaw lines, corners of the mouth that turn downward. “People want

some control over it, because those cues are important in their ability to communicate.” Rad and his wife, dermatologist Noelle Sherber, just opened Sherber + Rad in downtown Washington. Mondays and Tuesdays are always busy with patients who need to look great on Sunday talk shows. Summers are booked solid. And all year long, they get pulled aside at parties for curbside consultations. “It stems from the fact that people don’t want to feel they have a ‘use by’ date for their career in Washington,” Sherber says. That’s one reason politicians, diplomats, journalists, businessmen and other VIPs (no names, of course) flock to Washington dermatologist Tina Alster’s K Street office. Even those once resistant to the idea of cosmetic work changed their minds with the advent of highdefinition TV, where wrinkles now jump out on the screen. “I have a back entrance, which has come in very handy,” she says, smiling. “The Secret Service definitely knows that back entrance.” None of Alster’s patients is trying to look 25 or even 35. They just want to appear sharp, sophisticated, at the top of their game. Washington Fine Properties real estate agent Mark McFadden, 47, believes “without question” that his trips to Alster (aka the Queen of Laser) have helped him professionally. He sells multimillion-dollar properties and wants to appeal to buyers and sellers of all ages. He started with a little Botox for the lines on his forehead. All-Star Bold Predictions

Here’s what we know will happen at tonight’s MLB All-Star Game (8 p.m., Fox): Derek Jeter will get an emotional farewell; the NL or AL will win (which didn’t happen in 2002) to earn its league home-field advantage in the World Series; and Nationals fans will be upset that Tyler Clippard is their team’s lone representative available. But here are five daring prognostications for tonight’s game. JEFFREY TOMIK (E XPRESS)

1. Andrew McCutchen, CF, Pirates .324, 17 HRs, 61 RBIs, .420 OBP 2. Yasiel Puig, RF, Dodgers .309, 12 HRs, 52 RBIs, .393 OBP 3. Troy Tulowitzki, SS, Rockies .345, 21 HRs, 52 RBIs, .435 OBP 4. Carlos Gomez, LF, Brewers .304, 14 HRs, 48 RBIs, .370 OBP Pitcher: Adam Wainwright, Cardinals 12-4, 1.83 ERA, 115 SO, 0.91 WHIP

47 Out of the 81 All-Stars this year have bonus provisions in their contracts triggered by their selection for tonight’s game. Players earned a total of $2.2 million in bonuses, not including Kansas City outfielder Alex Gordon’s escalator. In addition to a $50,000 bonus, Gordon also had his 2015 salary and a 2016 player option rise by $500,000 each to $14 million for making the All-Star team. (AP)

NL Starting Lineup

1. Derek Jeter will lead off with a hit for the AL. Out of the 18 starting All-Stars (excluding pitchers), Jeter has the second-worst batting average. He’s hitting just .272 this year and will be leading off the bottom of the first inning against NL starter Adam Wainwright, who has allowed just 38 hits and six runs over his past 52⅔ innings and has a 1.03 ERA in that sevengame span. But this is Jeter’s night and there’s a reason he’s considered one of the most clutch hitters in baseball history. In his 14th AllStar Game, the future Hall of Famer will at least get a base hit in his first at-bat.

2. Win or lose, Tyler Clippard will get the decision for the NL. Clippard is a setup man, but he racks up decisions like a starter. In 2010, as a reliever, he led the Nationals in wins — going 11-8 in 78 appearances. This year, Clippard has as many wins (six) as fellow All-Star Jordan Zimmermann (who is nursing a biceps injury and won’t pitch tonight) and Gio Gonzalez. This will be Clippard’s second All-Star Game in his career. In his first AllStar appearance in 2011, the right-hander threw three pitches, allowed one hit and somehow managed to earn the win.

3. Clayton Kershaw will strike out the side when he’s called upon. Wainwright got the starting nod for the NL, but Kershaw is the best pitcher in baseball. The Dodgers left-hander had a recent streak of 41 scoreless innings, and he hasn’t allowed more than one run in his past seven starts. He has recorded at least seven strikeouts in 13 out of his 14 starts this season, and he has had double-digit Ks in three of his past five. Just like Pedro Martinez in the 1999 All-Star Game, Kershaw will strike out the first three hitters he faces — it just won’t be in the first inning.

4. Giancarlo Stanton will hit a mammoth home run. The Marlins slugger, a participant in Monday’s Home Run Derby, is tied for the NL lead with 21 home runs this season. According to ESPN Stats & Info, Stanton has averaged 423.8 feet per homer this year, the longest of anyone with at least 10 bombs. The 24-year-old wasn’t voted in as a starter, but the game is being played in an AL stadium and manager Mike Matheny decided to use Stanton as the NL’s designated hitter — batting him fifth. That should give him a few chances to show off his unreal power.

5. A catcher will win All-Star MVP. That position has won the award just once since 1998 (Brian McCann, 2010), but there are plenty of MVP-caliber catchers this year — even though the Orioles’ Matt Wieters and the Cardinals’ Yadier Molina won’t be playing because of injuries. The Brewers’ Jonathan Lucroy is fifth in the NL in batting (.315), while the Royals’ Salvador Perez leads his team in homers. Then there’s Kurt Suzuki , who will be representing the Twins at Target Field. The ex-Nationals catcher is hitting .309 and could be a late-game hero in front of his home crowd.

Nationals TV Ratings Down: The Nationals enter the All-Star break tied for first in the division, and yet the team’s local television ratings are down, substantially. According to SportsBusiness Journal’s annual July assessment of local TV ratings for baseball’s 29 U.S. franchises, Nationals ratings in the D.C. television market on MASN/MASN2 and WUSA are averaging a 1.90 rating, which is down 34 percent from the same point last season. That’s the third-biggest drop in baseball, behind just the Dodgers — who are struggling with distribution on their new regional network — and the last-place Rangers. The Nats are averaging 46,000 homes through the first week of July; last year at this time, they were averaging 67,000 homes. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

But defending champ has struggled since his British Open win Golf

JON SUPER (AP)

Phil Mickelson rolled long putts across the practice green in front of the Royal Liverpool clubhouse, some of them going in, most of them the right distance. He chirped to the caddie of Brandt Snedeker about their money game, a Mickelson tradition at the majors. Lefty was in good spirits Monday at the British Open, except for having to return the Claret Jug. Even that allowed him to reflect on a year of keeping golf’s oldest trophy, and the confidence he finally has when he plays links golf. “It’s a different feeling for me coming over here now having won this tournament,” Mickelson said. “The way I felt was, ‘Am I ever going to break through and play

well on links golf and win an Open Championship?’ Now I know that I can. I know that I’ve done it, and it takes a lot of pressure off me.” Confidence in links golf? Yes. In his game? That takes a little more work.

Since he left Muirfield last summer with the Claret Jug, Mickelson hasn’t won a tournament — his longest drought in five years. And except for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in January, where he was runner-up,

Mickelson hasn’t been particularly close. He has missed three cuts. He withdrew twice after narrowly making the cut because of injuries in San Diego and San Antonio. At the Masters, where he is a three-time champion, Mickelson missed the cut for the first time in 17 years. His lone top 10 on the PGA Tour was last August at The Barclays, a tie for sixth when he closed with a 65. So why the smile? “Normally, I would be discourage or frustrated, but I’m just not,” Mickelson said. “I feel like I’ve had some good breakthroughs in some areas. I haven’t had the results. I know I haven’t played well. But the parts feel a lot better than the whole right now. And I don’t know when it will all click together. I don’t know if it will be this week. I don’t know if it will be in three weeks or a month or what, but it should be soon.” DOUG FERGUSON (AP)

SEC commissioner Mike Slive is confident the NCAA reform he’s been pushing for years will take a big step toward becoming a reality in August. The longtime leader of the SEC gave his annual state-of-the-conference speech at the beginning of the league’s media days on Monday and wasn’t shy about putting more pressure on the NCAA. He said college athletics “must be willing to make appropriate changes,” including giving the Big Five conferences autonomy to make their own bylaws. “We are not deaf to the din of

discontent across collegiate athletics that has dominated the news,” Slive said.

The SEC has discussed several changes to the current system, including full cost-of-attendance scholarships and providing longterm medical coverage to college athletes. The NCAA’s board of directors will vote on the Big Five’s autonomy request in August. Slive said during the SEC’s summer meetings in June that the Big Five — which also include the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12 — would consider forming a “Division IV” if they weren’t granted autonomy on some NCAA governance issues. He was optimistic then, and also on Monday, that such a drastic measure won’t be needed. DAVID BR ANDT (AP)

Top SMU Recruit Going Overseas: Prized SMU recruit Emmanuel Mudiay will pursue professional basketball opportunities overseas instead of playing for the Mustangs. In a statement Monday, coach Larry Brown said Mudiay “really wants to alleviate some of the challenges his family faces and recognizes he has an opportunity to help them now.” He was considered by most as the nation’s top high school point guard in the class of 2014. Bradley Beal averaged 17.1 points a game for the Wizards last season.

Beal Makes 19-Man U.S. Roster Cut Basketball When All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook withdrew from Team USA mini-camp last week, an opportunity appeared to open up for John Wall to earn an invitation to try out for the squad as it begins training July 28 in Las Vegas in preparation for the FIBA World Cup. Despite an All-Star appearance and leading the Wizards into the second round of the playoffs, Wall was again left off the 19-man roster USA Basketball announced on Monday. Bradley Beal is the Wizards’ lone representative on a team that includes Kevin Durant, Kevin Love, Derrick Rose, Blake Griffin, Paul George, James Harden, Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard, DeMarcus Cousins, Kyle Korver, Kenneth Faried, Andre Drummond and Klay Thompson. USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo made two additions that weren’t on the original 28-man talent pool through 2016 in DeMar DeRozan and Chandler Parsons. The 12 players to make the national team will participate in the World Cup from Aug. 30 to Sept. 14 in Spain. M I C H A E L L E E (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Welcome to Miami Moves 305 Fitness classes mimic a nonstop night on the town — only with extra lunges

Kurzban told Thursday’s class, as the room full of legs shook. Instead, they jumped into a five-minute “sprint” of extra intense moves, which segued into another dance segment and, finally, the cooldown.

All eyes were on Sadie Kurzban Thursday night as she bounded up in a tank top that blared, “Make Sweat Sexy.” The curly-haired dynamo had an announcement: “I’m here in D.C. because we heard there are a lot of young people, and a lot of Type A people who get into their workouts.” That’s just the audience for Kurzban’s brand of dance aerobics, 305 Fitness.

JASON HORNICK PHOTOS (FOR EXPRESS)

Workout: No one in the room

What It Is: The program, named for Miami’s area code, was born at Brown University. Kurzban, a Miami native, experimented as she taught dance fitness to her classmates. What developed into 305 Fitness won a business plan competition, so when Kurzban graduated in 2012, she used the prize money to establish her vision by teaching classes at several gyms in New York. “Word just spread,” Kurzban said, as more students fell for her formula. There’s a DJ in every class, but only half of what he or she spins prompts choreographed routines. So the instructor — Kurzban or one of her handpicked team of a dozen proteges — must improvise. “I’m genuinely excited when a song comes on I wasn’t expecting. I don’t know what’s coming.” But she can sketch out what’s happening with 305. It’s opening a flagship studio in New York this fall and expanding to new markets. Up first: D.C. Two instructors have relocated here. Kurzban accompanied them last week to get the party started with D.C.’s debut classes.

Natalia Roberts, front, and Brittney Mooney are the two 305 Fitness instructors who have come from New York to teach in D.C.

Unlike most dance classes, which are taught as a series of songs, each with its own steps, 305 is a constant f low — the DJ creates a seamless mix. So the first 30 minutes of class is taught as one section, with rapidly evolving choreography. Much of it is chosen on the spot, Kurzban says, but regulars know to expect certain things. “You can’t go w rong w ith jumping jacks, high knees and split squats,” she says. To make it feel more like a nightclub than boot camp, those are accompanied by grapevines, hip rolls and rump shaking. There’s a toning “break” — planks, squats, lunges and plies designed to make muscles burn. “Some of you think class is over. That’s not what’s happening,”

worked as hard as Kurzban, who kept popping up at different spots, reminding students to lift their knees higher, squat lower and keep up as she twisted and turned. “When I’m right in your face, it’s hard to slack off,” she explained. It’s also hard to ignore all of that high-impact hopping. If your knees can’t handle it, 305 isn’t the right class for you, Kurzban said. But for the people who can keep up (or come close) it’s exhilaratingly exhausting. “I liked the wildness of it,” said Cassandra Bell, 25, of Arlington, who was reminded of the soccer workouts of her youth. Christina Cleary, 30, of NoMa, was amazed at how wrecked she felt, despite her marathon training.

WORK IT OUT

305 Fitness founder Sadie Kurzban, center, insists that each class has a live DJ.

Moves: There’s only one rule, Kurzban decreed: “You have to make noise at some point.” She held up her hands to test the crowd’s volume level, they roared back and it was time to get going.

Details 305 Fitness (305fitness.com) is offered at BodySmith Gym (1630 14th St. NW) seven days a week. It’s $26 for a drop-in. There’s an intro deal: $40 for two weeks of classes.

Motivation: T he

key, said Jessica Downing, 24, of Georgetown, is that the exercises change so rapidly “that I didn’t have time to give up.” That’s by design, Kurzban said: “I’m a millennial. We want it, we want it now, and then we want something else. I’m not going to sit through a five-minute song.” And in the moments when pain is setting in, she’s ready with encouragement. “Let me see your courage, discipline and focus,” Kurzban commanded at point. At another: “Take that risk and give it your all.” It’s advice she clearly follows herself. VICK Y HALLET T (E XPRESS)

I work with a bunch of jerks and idiots. There, I said it. How do people keep their cool when they have to spend the majority of waking hours in the company of people that make them want to scream? TIRED CO-WORKER, VA

The Curse of the Roommate My roommate is great overall, but has a foul mouth. We’re women in our 20s and I’m not a prude, but the way that she talks leaves me disgusted several times a week. I know how hard it is to find someone that you live with well. I’ve had terrible roommates in the past. So I wish I could let this one thing go, and I don’t want to ruin a good thing. But I also feel like I need to say something because it is so not OK. MY EARS!!! I appreciate your wanting to endure this in silence as a courtesy. And as someone whose own language can get salty, I like that you’re not condemning her character. Still, you have to speak up; it’s not fair to you that she’s making your living space uncomfortable, and it’s not fair to her that you’re breeding resentment about some-

thing she has no clue about. Tell her how much you like living with her and how you even hesitated to bring it up. Make it clear that you’re only asking for her to tone it down, not complete censorship. I don’t know whether this is a few “flying figs” or super-graphic prose, but the more extreme her language, the more you’ll be doing her a favor.

Of course, there are two sides to every “idiot” accusation. But you wrote to me, so you win: Your colleagues sound terrible! This seemingly amorphous blob of a problem can best be managed by breaking it down — first, by the day, and then by the interaction. You’ve got to start with a clean slate each morning, and react to each interaction individually, rather than carrying the baggage of their jerkdom around and letting it compound. Deep breaths and mantras (even silly ones just to distract yourself) will help you press the reset button. Within your workday, build in breaks every hour if need be — a walk, some visualizations, some meditations, music. And, of course, presuming that you see yourself getting a different job, work on networking and résumé-sending. By maximizing your autonomy within the things you can control, you’ll help lessen the stress of the things you can’t.

Lake Ridge and General’s Ridge golf courses are hosting a tournament Saturday and Sunday, but you won’t need clubs or a caddy. The event at the two Prince William County, Va., courses is for footgolf. The sport, which originated in the Netherlands and made its way to the West Coast of the United States in 2011, is a soccer-golf hybrid. Players walk the course and try to kick a size 5 soccer ball into a 21-inch-wide bucket. It has caught on quickly at the two Billy Casper Golf-owned courses in the county, the only places in Northern Virginia to play the sport. (Footgolf is also an option at the Chesapeake Bay Golf Club in Maryland, which will host its first tournament in August.) “You don’t have to learn a game per se; all you have to do is be able to kick the ball,” said Mark Wesolek, the regional manager for Billy Casper Golf. “This is a way people can get out and breathe a little bit of fresh air, have a little bit of a recreational experience and be with their friends.” Footgolf doesn’t require special equipment, it’s a quicker game than regular golf and it attracts a somewhat younger and more diverse crowd, Wesolek said. Joey Adams, general manager of the course at Lake Ridge, said three women recently came in and asked whether they could get lessons from an instructor. Adams doesn’t have anyone on staff to teach footgolf — yet. It’s popu-

Where to Play Lake Ridge (lakeridgegc.com) in Woodbridge, Va., charges $10 a person to play its nine-hole course. General’s Ridge (generals ridge.com) in Manassas Park, Va., has an 18-hole course that’s $12 per person walking, or $21 with the use of a golf cart.

lar with families who come in for traditional golf, too, he said. The adults play the regular game while the kids play footgolf. And although it sounds simple enough — how hard can it be to kick a ball into a large bucket? — it is quite challenging, particularly for people who are used to traditional golf. “While this is an easy golf course, it’s a hard footgolf course,” Wesolek said. “The holes are in places where, because there’s just enough rounding undulation, if you get it on the wrong side of the hill, it just takes you all the way away

from the hole, and now you have to work your way back.” Wesolek said it might be easier for soccer players than for people who, like him, are golfers. It’s more than just reading the greens, he said — you have manipulate the ball with your foot and hit it with just the right force. “You have to have proper timing and sequencing of body parts and movements,” Wesolek said. “Here I am running up and giving it everything I’ve got and the ball doesn’t go anywhere, it goes way over there. I’d be much better off employing good technique and a little bit of tempo, and I could probably kick the ball farther, with the right trajectory.” Adams doesn’t enforce the official uniform of the American FootGolf League: a flat cap, collared shirt, golf-style pants, knickers or shorts, and knee-high argyle socks. He does require that players wear sneakers or indoor soccer shoes, though, because cleats can damage the greens. MARI-JANE WILLIAMS (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Sweat Under the Stars: No plans tonight? The D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation wants to change that, which is why it just introduced a slew of new nighttime options that don’t require preregistration. The schedule includes weekly line-dancing classes for adults and seniors at four different locations, drills and matches — for all ages — at the Fort Lincoln Park tennis courts and evening hikes on area trails. Check dpr.dc.gov for a full listing of locations and times. (E XPRESS)

Jenny McCarthy to Host Weekly SiriusXM Series

To his acolytes, Zach Braff is the every-nebbish — the alienated but empathetic “nice guy.” Yet others see him as a tipping point in the Urban Outfitterization of indiedom. Regardless of your axis on the Braff spectrum, the impact of his directorial debut, 2004’s “Garden State,” was unmistakable. Made for $2.5 million, it grossed $26.7 million domestically and won a Grammy (Best Compilation Soundtrack) and Independent Spirit Award (Best First Feature). “I didn’t know that ‘Garden State’ would be this astronomical hit,” says Braff, 39. He notes that “90 percent” of his attackers describe themselves as writers. A Braff takeover seemed imminent after “Garden State.” But it took 10 years for “Wish I Was Here,” which opens on Friday, to come to fruition. The film made headlines a year ago, when Braff turned to Kickstarter seeking $2 million for the project. The donations would help offset previously procured funding and Braff’s own investment without the help of film financiers. “I’m making a tiny movie about my spirituality, my family and my biggest fears. And I’m supposed

Fan Service Some celebrities stay offline to insulate themselves from criticism, but Zach Braff engages his 1.4 million Twitter followers. “He goes out of his way to be nice to fans and reward them for liking him,” says Donald Faison, his “Scrubs” co-star. “He was in London doing a play and some German fans wrote to him; he was so touched, he ended up traveling to Germany to visit them.” (T WP)

to give final cut to a banker, who’s going to make his cuts totally based on a test screening in the suburbs of L.A.? No. [Screw] that,” Braff thunders. Within about a month, 46,500 people had contributed a total of $3.1 million to the project. He’s candid about the themes coursing through “Wish I Was Here.” A spiritual sequel to “Garden State,” it raises personal and religious questions: how to reconcile personal limitations with childhood dreams and the crushing nothingness of death among them. “It doesn’t work for me to believe that Noah’s Ark was real,” Braff says. “The only religious sentiment that does is to go, ‘I’m here now. How can I be a good person to those around me? How can I express myself artistically, honestly and truly, without compromise?’ ” JEFF WEISS (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Sleuthing Out ‘Detective’ Rumors: Colin Farrell is the latest actor rumored to be in negotiations for the new season of “True Detective.” Deadline reports that Farrell is close to securing one of the show’s four lead roles. According to The Wrap, Taylor Kitsch is also likely to be cast as a younger male lead. “True Detective’s” second season will be completely different from its first, and will be set in California. “The authorities want ‘to crack down on dangerous behaviour during the festival.’ They have also apparently cracked down on irony.” — COMMENTER MIKE_PROCTER AT THEGUARDIAN.COM has

a problem with police in Pamplona, Spain, who are searching for a man who took a selfie while participating in the city’s annual bull run. The unidentified man faces a fine of up to $5,000 for taking a photo just inches in front of several bulls chasing after him. Police this year instituted new regulations to keep participants safe during the festival, in which people flee from bulls running through the city’s narrow streets.

“It is obvious that use of the metric system is making these people somehow like instant coffee.” — COMMENTER NULLPOINTER AT WASHINGTONPOST.COM knows the

real reason why almost half of the world actually prefers instant coffee. Market research firm Euromonitor reports that while the United States, Canada and most of South America remain staunchly in favor of fresh coffee, instant java accounts for most of the market in regions without a strong coffee tradition, such as India, China and Australia.

“Why are you acting as if you can’t have both? Split screen? Everyone wins! Except Argentina.” — COMMENTER DUDEIKNOWEVERYTHING AT THEVANE.GAWKER.COM has an idea to

appease everyone when a severe weather alert interrupts live TV, as it did in southern New York on Sunday during the World Cup final. ABC affiliate WENY cut away from the last seven minutes of the final match between Germany and Argentina to cover a tornado warning in the area, sparking plenty of outrage from soccer fans on Twitter.

HEALTHY MEN NEEDED FOR A RESEARCH STUDY If you have ever taken prescription pain pills for a medical condition such as a broken bone or dental surgery, we need you for a paid research study at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). The purpose of this study is to learn more about how opiate pain medication affects the body and brain. Both outpatient and inpatient study visits are required. There is no cost to participate. Study participants receive money for time and local travel.

“Who knows, maybe Action Bronson will even show up to deliver a surprise performance.” — ALEX YOUNG AT CONSEQUENCEOFSOUND .NET has high hopes for “The Golden

Porta Potty” that will grace the Austin City Limits Music Festival in October. The luxurious rest facility (clearly, not the one shown) includes a “gold-plated portable toilet boasting air conditioning, a golden chandelier, a television that live streams festival performances, WiFi, bottles of Pellegrino and much more.” The festival is giving away passes to the “port o’ gold” if you’re interested in relieving yourself in style.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’re going to have to work more quickly than usual to get all your ducks in a row and be ready for what is likely to begin tomorrow.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.
