Bowe Bergdahl’s whirlwind year has included the following: captivity in Pakistan, an exchange for Taliban officials in Afghanistan that yielded his freedom, and a highly publicized and politicized debate about whether the Obama administration botched the handling of his case. Now, it will include the following, too: an active-duty unit. Army officials confirmed the move on Monday morning, saying the sergeant has completed the final phase of his reintegration process and will be assigned to a desk job
at U.S. Army North and Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. Bergdahl’s exact administrative duties were not immediately disclosed, but a Pentagon spokesman, Army Col. Steve Warren, said Bergdahl is not restricted in any way. The Army said that in his assignment to U.S. Army North he “can contribute to the mission,” which is focused on homeland defense. “He is a normal soldier now,” Warren said. Bergdahl’s case is one of the most extraordinary of recent times — for the length of his captivity, for his apparent decision to abandon his unit during a combat deployment, and for the controversy triggered by the circumstances of his release May 31. Well, it turns out he broke the rules by bringing said marijuana back to his office, so now he’s apologizing. The city of Seattle’s official policy is that its workplaces are drug free, which means that city employees are not allowed to possess or use controlled substances on the premises. They also cannot possess a controlled substance while
out on city business. Holmes issued a statement on Friday afternoon, apologizing for bringing the unopened marijuana back to his offices and violating these rules. Unexplained rash? Check your iPad. It turns out the popular tablet computer may contain nickel, one of the most common allergyinducing metals. Recent reports in medical journals detail nickel allergies from a variety of personal electronic devices. But it was an Apple iPad that caused an itchy body rash in an 11-year-old boy recently treated at a San Diego hospital, according to a report in Monday’s Pediatrics. The boy had a history of skin issues, but a different rash developed and wouldn’t respond to typical treatment. His skin tested positive for nickel, and doctors traced it back to an iPad he had used with increasing frequency the past six months. The iPad tested positive for nickel as well, the report said.

According to the article in Pediatrics, the boy was advised to use the Smart Case, “which provides overall coverage of the iPad.” When he did that, the rash improved. Whether all iPad models contain nickel is uncertain; an Apple spokesman declined to comment. Nickel rashes aren’t life-threatening but they can be very uncomfortable, and they may require treatment with steroids and antibiotics, said Dr. Sharon Jacob, a dermatologist at Rady Children’s Hospital, where the boy was treated. Church of England Rules for Women London The Church of England ended one of its longest and most divisive disputes Monday with an overwhelming vote in favor of allowing women to become bishops. The church’s national assembly, known as the General Synod, voted for the historic measure, reaching the required two-thirds majority in each of its three different houses. The District Department of Public Works will begin ticketing and sometimes towing vehicles along H Street and Benning Road NE that are parked in a way that impedes the path of the streetcars, which will be running along the route in a continuation of their testing phase. rules — consistent enforcement — will be a key to successful streetcar operations. Unlike buses, the streetcars can’t veer around parked cars to get into another lane. Without tough enforcement, it will be easy to throw the District’s first modern
streetcar operation off schedule. It’s still just a test, because the District has yet to announce a start date for the long-delayed service. The car barn, which will serve as a maintenance facility, is still under construction.
The fine for blocking the path of the streetcar is $100. Tickets issued up to this point have just been warnings. A driver could get the ticket for double parking in such as way as to overlap with the streetcar route, or parking outside the white lines that mark the borders of legal spaces. A ticketed vehicle could also be towed to a nearby street, out of harm’s way. The definition of “blocking the path” is a bit broader than just parking on top of the tracks. Bill Would Ban School Suspensions in Pre-K The District’s traditional and charter schools would be prohibited from expelling or suspending pre-kindergartners in most circumstances under new legislation that D.C. Council member David Grosso introduced Monday. Arlington to Vote on Pub-Crawl Crackdown Arlington’s pub crawls may soon be less freewheeling. Beer Tourism Is Brewing in Va. Loudoun County, Va. First came the wine lovers, flooding dozens of Loudoun County, Va., tasting rooms in search of favorite local varietals. Next came the foodies craving a gourmet bite to accompany their glass of cabernet franc. Now, with an exponential rise in the number of local craft breweries across Loudoun, fueled in part by a new state law that grants farmbased breweries the same privileges as their winery counterparts, Loudoun has identified its latest tourism target: beer lovers. As the number of craft breweries and nanobreweries in Northern Virginia has soared over the past few years, beer enthusiasts in Loudoun have helped lead the charge, capitalizing on the newly relaxed regulation.
One member, Jim Graham, said he considered whether funding for the homeless might be revisited in light of a Washington Post investigation published Sunday into the state of the D.C. General family shelter. But Graham said he was not convinced further negotiation with the Gray administration would be fruitful. “I can’t count on the people on the other side of the table,” he said. To sustain the veto, Gray would have needed to persuade five of the council’s 13 members to oppose the override. Gray, who lost a re-election bid in the April 1 Democratic primary, acknowledged Friday that the council was likely to kill the veto, but he said he felt compelled to speak up for his priorities. Leesburg police said Monday they would move forward with charges in an alleged shoplifting case in which a Target security officer said he lost his job when he reported the alleged incident. The police in a news release Monday also said the suspect was “positively identified as a Fairfax Sheriff’s Office employee” and that they had notified the sheriff’s office of the allegations on May 30, three days after the second alleged incident at the Target store. Police said they had been waiting on Target to decide whether to pursue prosecution. The charges will not affect the firing of Dallas Northington, the former assets protection specialist for Target who said he was terminated on June 3 after reporting two shoplifting incidents, and providing surveillance video for both, to the Leesburg police. And all year long, they get pulled aside at parties for curbside consultations. “It stems from the fact that people don’t want to feel they have a ‘use by’ date for their career in Washington,” Sherber says. That’s one reason politicians, diplomats, journalists, businessmen and other VIPs (no names, of course) flock to Washington dermatologist Tina Alster’s K Street office. Even those once resistant to the idea of cosmetic work changed their minds with the advent of highdefinition TV, where wrinkles now jump out on the screen. “I have a back entrance, which has come in very handy,” she says, smiling. “The Secret Service definitely knows that back entrance.” None of Alster’s patients is trying to look 25 or even 35. They just want to appear sharp, sophisticated, at the top of their game. NL Starting Lineup
1. Derek Jeter will lead off with a hit for the AL. Out of the 18 starting All-Stars (excluding pitchers), Jeter has the second-worst batting average. He’s hitting just .272 this year and will be leading off the bottom of the first inning against NL starter Adam Wainwright, who has allowed just 38 hits and six runs over his past 52⅔ innings and has a 1.03 ERA in that sevengame span. But this is Jeter’s night and there’s a reason he’s considered one of the most clutch hitters in baseball history. In his 14th AllStar Game, the future Hall of Famer will at least get a base hit in his first at-bat.
2. Win or lose, Tyler Clippard will get the decision for the NL. Clippard is a setup man, but he racks up decisions like a starter. In 2010, as a reliever, he led the Nationals in wins — going 11-8 in 78 appearances. This year, Clippard has as many wins (six) as fellow All-Star Jordan Zimmermann (who is nursing a biceps injury and won’t pitch tonight) and Gio Gonzalez. This will be Clippard’s second All-Star Game in his career. In his first AllStar appearance in 2011, the right-hander threw three pitches, allowed one hit and somehow managed to earn the win.
3. Clayton Kershaw will strike out the side when he’s called upon. Wainwright got the starting nod for the NL, but Kershaw is the best pitcher in baseball. The Dodgers left-hander had a recent streak of 41 scoreless innings, and he hasn’t allowed more than one run in his past seven starts. He has recorded at least seven strikeouts in 13 out of his 14 starts this season, and he has had double-digit Ks in three of his past five. Just like Pedro Martinez in the 1999 All-Star Game, Kershaw will strike out the first three hitters he faces — it just won’t be in the first inning.
4. Giancarlo Stanton will hit a mammoth home run. The Marlins slugger, a participant in Monday’s Home Run Derby, is tied for the NL lead with 21 home runs this season. According to ESPN Stats & Info, Stanton has averaged 423.8 feet per homer this year, the longest of anyone with at least 10 bombs. The 24-year-old wasn’t voted in as a starter, but the game is being played in an AL stadium and manager Mike Matheny decided to use Stanton as the NL’s designated hitter — batting him fifth. That should give him a few chances to show off his unreal power.
5. A catcher will win All-Star MVP. That position has won the award just once since 1998 (Brian McCann, 2010), but there are plenty of MVP-caliber catchers this year — even though the Orioles’ Matt Wieters and the Cardinals’ Yadier Molina won’t be playing because of injuries. The Brewers’ Jonathan Lucroy is fifth in the NL in batting (.315), while the Royals’ Salvador Perez leads his team in homers. Then there’s Kurt Suzuki , who will be representing the Twins at Target Field. The ex-Nationals catcher is hitting .309 and could be a late-game hero in front of his home crowd.
Nationals TV Ratings Down: The Nationals enter the All-Star break tied for first in the division, and yet the team’s local television ratings are down, substantially. According to SportsBusiness Journal’s annual July assessment of local TV ratings for baseball’s 29 U.S. franchises, Nationals ratings in the D.C. television market on MASN/MASN2 and WUSA are averaging a 1.90 rating, which is down 34 percent from the same point last season. That’s the third-biggest drop in baseball, behind just the Dodgers — who are struggling with distribution on their new regional network — and the last-place Rangers. The Nats are averaging 46,000 homes through the first week of July; last year at this time, they were averaging 67,000 homes. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Even that allowed him to reflect on a year of keeping golf’s oldest trophy, and the confidence he finally has when he plays links golf. “It’s a different feeling for me coming over here now having won this tournament,” Mickelson said. “The way I felt was, ‘Am I ever going to break through and play

Since he left Muirfield last summer with the Claret Jug, Mickelson hasn’t won a tournament — his longest drought in five years. And except for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in January, where he was runner-up,
Mickelson hasn’t been particularly close. He has missed three cuts. He withdrew twice after narrowly making the cut because of injuries in San Diego and San Antonio. At the Masters, where he is a three-time champion, Mickelson missed the cut for the first time in 17 years. His lone top 10 on the PGA Tour was last August at The Barclays, a tie for sixth when he closed with a 65. So why the smile? “Normally, I would be discourage or frustrated, but I’m just not,” Mickelson said. “I feel like I’ve had some good breakthroughs in some areas. I haven’t had the results. I know I haven’t played well. But the parts feel a lot better than the whole right now. And I don’t know when it will all click together. I don’t know if it will be this week. The SEC has discussed several changes to the current system, including full cost-of-attendance scholarships and providing longterm medical coverage to college athletes. Kurzban told Thursday’s class, as the room full of legs shook. Instead, they jumped into a five-minute “sprint” of extra intense moves, which segued into another dance segment and, finally, the cooldown.
All eyes were on Sadie Kurzban Thursday night as she bounded up in a tank top that blared, “Make Sweat Sexy.” The curly-haired dynamo had an announcement: “I’m here in D.C. because we heard there are a lot of young people, and a lot of Type A people who get into their workouts.” That’s just the audience for Kurzban’s brand of dance aerobics, 305 Fitness.

What It Is: The program, named for Miami’s area code, was born at Brown University. Kurzban, a Miami native, experimented as she taught dance fitness to her classmates. What developed into 305 Fitness won a business plan competition, so when Kurzban graduated in 2012, she used the prize money to establish her vision by teaching classes at several gyms in New York. “Word just spread,” Kurzban said, as more students fell for her formula. There’s a DJ in every class, but only half of what he or she spins prompts choreographed routines. So the instructor — Kurzban or one of her handpicked team of a dozen proteges — must improvise. “I’m genuinely excited when a song comes on I wasn’t expecting. I don’t know what’s coming.” But she can sketch out what’s happening with 305. It’s opening a flagship studio in New York this fall and expanding to new markets. Up first: D.C. Two instructors have relocated here. Kurzban accompanied them last week to get the party started with D.C.’s debut classes.

Unlike most dance classes, which are taught as a series of songs, each with its own steps, 305 is a constant f low — the DJ creates a seamless mix. So the first 30 minutes of class is taught as one section, with rapidly evolving choreography. Much of it is chosen on the spot, Kurzban says, but regulars know to expect certain things. “You can’t go w rong w ith jumping jacks, high knees and split squats,” she says. To make it feel more like a nightclub than boot camp, those are accompanied by grapevines, hip rolls and rump shaking. There’s a toning “break” — planks, squats, lunges and plies designed to make muscles burn. “Some of you think class is over. That’s not what’s happening,”
worked as hard as Kurzban, who kept popping up at different spots, reminding students to lift their knees higher, squat lower and keep up as she twisted and turned. “When I’m right in your face, it’s hard to slack off,” she explained. It’s also hard to ignore all of that high-impact hopping. If your knees can’t handle it, 305 isn’t the right class for you, Kurzban said. But for the people who can keep up (or come close) it’s exhilaratingly exhausting. “I liked the wildness of it,” said Cassandra Bell, 25, of Arlington, who was reminded of the soccer workouts of her youth. Christina Cleary, 30, of NoMa, was amazed at how wrecked she felt, despite her marathon training.

We want it, we want it now, and then we want something else. I’m not going to sit through a five-minute song.” And in the moments when pain is setting in, she’s ready with encouragement. “Let me see your courage, discipline and focus,” Kurzban commanded at point. Make it clear that you’re only asking for her to tone it down, not complete censorship. I don’t know whether this is a few “flying figs” or super-graphic prose, but the more extreme her language, the more you’ll be doing her a favor.
Of course, there are two sides to every “idiot” accusation. But you wrote to me, so you win: Your colleagues sound terrible! This seemingly amorphous blob of a problem can best be managed by breaking it down — first, by the day, and then by the interaction. You’ve got to start with a clean slate each morning, and react to each interaction individually, rather than carrying the baggage of their jerkdom around and letting it compound. Deep breaths and mantras (even silly ones just to distract yourself) will help you press the reset button. Within your workday, build in breaks every hour if need be — a walk, some visualizations, some meditations, music. And, of course, presuming that you see yourself getting a different job, work on networking and résumé-sending. By maximizing your autonomy within the things you can control, you’ll help lessen the stress of the things you can’t.

Lake Ridge and General’s Ridge golf courses are hosting a tournament Saturday and Sunday, but you won’t need clubs or a caddy. The event at the two Prince William County, Va., courses is for footgolf. The sport, which originated in the Netherlands and made its way to the West Coast of the United States in 2011, is a soccer-golf hybrid. Players walk the course and try to kick a size 5 soccer ball into a 21-inch-wide bucket. It has caught on quickly at the two Billy Casper Golf-owned courses in the county, the only places in Northern Virginia to play the sport. (Footgolf is also an option at the Chesapeake Bay Golf Club in Maryland, which will host its first tournament in August.) “You don’t have to learn a game per se; all you have to do is be able to kick the ball,” said Mark Wesolek, the regional manager for Billy Casper Golf. “This is a way people can get out and breathe a little bit of fresh air, have a little bit of a recreational experience and be with their friends.” Footgolf doesn’t require special equipment, it’s a quicker game than regular golf and it attracts a somewhat younger and more diverse crowd, Wesolek said. Joey Adams, general manager of the course at Lake Ridge, said three women recently came in and asked whether they could get lessons from an instructor. Adams doesn’t have anyone on staff to teach footgolf — yet. It’s popu-

And although it sounds simple enough — how hard can it be to kick a ball into a large bucket? — it is quite challenging, particularly for people who are used to traditional golf. “While this is an easy golf course, it’s a hard footgolf course,” Wesolek said. “The holes are in places where, because there’s just enough rounding undulation, if you get it on the wrong side of the hill, it just takes you all the way away
from the hole, and now you have to work your way back.” Wesolek said it might be easier for soccer players than for people who, like him, are golfers. It’s more than just reading the greens, he said — you have manipulate the ball with your foot and hit it with just the right force. “You have to have proper timing and sequencing of body parts and movements,” Wesolek said. “Here I am running up and giving it everything I’ve got and the ball doesn’t go anywhere, it goes way over there. I’d be much better off employing good technique and a little bit of tempo, and I could probably kick the ball farther, with the right trajectory.” Adams doesn’t enforce the official uniform of the American FootGolf League: a flat cap, collared shirt, golf-style pants, knickers or shorts, and knee-high argyle socks. To his acolytes, Zach Braff is the every-nebbish — the alienated but empathetic “nice guy.” Yet others see him as a tipping point in the Urban Outfitterization of indiedom. Regardless of your axis on the Braff spectrum, the impact of his directorial debut, 2004’s “Garden State,” was unmistakable. Made for $2.5 million, it grossed $26.7 million domestically and won a Grammy (Best Compilation Soundtrack) and Independent Spirit Award (Best First Feature). “I didn’t know that ‘Garden State’ would be this astronomical hit,” says Braff, 39. He notes that “90 percent” of his attackers describe themselves as writers. A Braff takeover seemed imminent after “Garden State.” But it took 10 years for “Wish I Was Here,” which opens on Friday, to come to fruition. The film made headlines a year ago, when Braff turned to Kickstarter seeking $2 million for the project.
