Pokémon NO, says museum THE DISTRICT Almost everywhere you turn, it seems, people have their eyes glued to smartphone screens playing Pokémon Go. Since its launch last week, the app has quickly become a cultural phenomenon that has fans of all ages hunting around their neighborhoods for collectible digital creatures that appear on players’ screens as they explore realworld locations. But there’s at least one place that would really like to keep Pokémon out: The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The museum, along with many other landmarks, is a “PokéStop” within the game — a place where players can get free in-game items. There are three PokéStops associated with various parts of the museum. “Playing the game is not appropriate in the museum, which is a memorial to the victims of Nazism,” Andrew Hollinger, the museum’s communications director, said. “We are trying to find out if we can get the museum

Hollinger said that the museum is concerned about the potential Koffing appearance. Niantic, the San Franciscobased software development company behind the game, did not respond to inquiries about the alleged Koffing sighting or if there was any way to honor the Holocaust Museum’s request to stop Pokémon from popping up inside its building. Hollinger stressed that the museum is generally pro-technology and encourages visitors to use social media to share how their experiences with the exhibits moved them. “But this game falls very much outside that,” he said. Man charged after shooting at D.C. police CRIME D.C. police exchanged gunfire with an armed man early Tuesday near a playground in Southeast Washington before arresting him after a 30-minute standoff, according to District officials. No one was shot, and no other injuries were reported. Police did not know at the time that the gunman, who was in an SUV, had carjacked the vehicle and that several other people inside were victims, officials said. A police news release Tuesday afternoon said the gunman, 22-year-old Luvell Alverson of Suitland, Md., has been charged
with armed robbery, kidnapping and assault on a police officer. D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said before the gun battle with officers, the man robbed four people at gunpoint and shot at them. She said the man then jumped into the SUV, with others inside, and ordered the driver to speed away. By that time, Lanier said officers were alerted to scene at the 3200 block of Sixth Street SE after hearing gunfire at 12:10 a.m. Lanier said the SUV stopped when police arrived. Officers got out of their vehicles and approached the vehicle, when the suspect opened fire on

A group of 15 student leaders from Finland and 16 student government leaders at Gaithersburg High School met Tuesday to share experiences and explore differences for teenagers in the two countries. The Finns, who are in the area for six weeks as part of a U.S.-Finland cultural exchange program, wanted to know more about the presidential race, school mascots, proms and the many extracurricular sports and activities available to American students. The Montgomery County students seemed taken with their visitors’ tales of small class sizes, free college, universal health care and strict gun laws. Statehood referendum set for Nov. ballot D.C. lawmakers have voted to put a statehood referendum on the ballot in November. Tuesday’s unanimous vote by the D.C. Council is part of Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser’s strategy to pursue the “Tennessee model” for statehood. Tennessee became a state after it crafted its own constitution and then was admitted into the union by Congress. Montgomery County to investigate 911 outage Montgomery County officials plan to investigate why the 911 system failed for two hours, during which time two people died. Officials said Monday that the 911 system was out from about 11:10 p.m. Sunday until 1:10 a.m. Monday. Callers received only a busy signal. During the outage, crews responded to two medical emergency calls, involving fatalities that included a 91-year-old Olney woman and 40-year-old Marlon Somarriba from Rockville. Council won’t vote on the 16-week proposal before summer recess THE DISTRICT Since last fall, D.C. lawmakers have been debating a measure to make the District the most generous place in the country for a worker to take time off after giving birth. Hundreds have testified before the D.C. Council that the proposed 16 weeks of paid time off could make it less stressful to have a child. Doctors have said it would allow new parents and infants, especially in low-income families, to bond and increase rates of breast-feeding, which is critical to early development.
Several have even told lawmakers it would so radically improve the experience of childbirth that they would wait on having a child until the new law is approved. The D.C. Council, however, recessed Tuesday without action on the bill until at least September, ensuring that the earliest the benefit could be funded and offered to city residents is 2018. The proposed family-leave law would give paid time off to both new parents and adults caring for dying parents and significant others. It would also create a new citywide benefit of paid personal leave for workers’ own medical problems. The cost of the benefit — still unknown — would be paid for by a new tax on businesses, perhaps of 1 percent.

Parents with toddlers sit through a D.C. Council hearing last fall to show support for a 16-week paid family leave bill, the most generous in the U.S.
But the proposal has been caught in a mathematics problem: How many workers in D.C. would use the law if it existed? And how many years of the new tax would D.C. have to amass
before it could cover unforeseen costs? Experts disagree, and proponents have begun warning that the District will not be able to offer the nation’s most generous leave — perhaps just half of
the proposed 16 weeks off. D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson said Monday the council would continue working on the measure in September. Meanwhile, officials in the office of D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser have warned that it could take two years or more once a law is passed to save money from the new tax to begin paying for the benefit. Mendelson has signaled that he intends to pass some form of family leave, including seed money beginning in October to start hiring and creating the program. Penn State coach Joe Paterno was told by a teen boy in 1976 that former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky had molested him in the shower but responded that he didn’t want to hear about it and had “a football season to worry about,” according to court documents unsealed Tuesday. The man identified as John Doe 150 said in 2014 that other boys in a shower heard him yell that Sandusky had just touched him sexually. The man said

You might want to think twice about shooing a thumb from your child’s mouth. Researchers in New Zealand have found that children who suck their thumbs or bite their nails are less likely to develop allergies later in life. The research comes from a long-term project known as the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study, which has followed more than 1,000 children since birth. These study participants were given skin-prick tests at ages 13 and 32 to detect allergies. The results of the first tests showed that 38 percent of children who were either thumb-suckers or nail-biters had allergies, compared with 49 percent of children who had neither habit. While the unanimous decision by a five-member panel of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague is seen as a major legal declaration regarding one
of the world’s most contested regions, the actual impact is uncertain, because the tribunal has no power of enforcement. China, which boycotted the proceedings, reiterated that it does not accept the panel’s jurisdiction. China “solemnly declares that the award is null and void and has no binding force,” a statement from the foreign ministry said. The finding nonetheless constitutes a rebuke, carrying with it the force of international opinion. It also emboldens small countries in Asia that have chafed at China’s expansionism.

Kashmir protests’ death toll hits 24 TRAL, INDIA At least 24 people have been killed and hundreds injured in four days of violent protests in Indian-administered Kashmir after the death of a young, social media-savvy separatist named Burhan Wani. Tires were set ablaze, curfews imposed and mobs took over police stations, holding one officer hostage and drowning another by pushing his vehicle into a river. Officials said it was the worst violence in years in Kashmir, the Himalayan region claimed by both India and neighboring Pakistan and the scene of a decades-long insurgent movement that many say has been bolstered by support from Pakistan. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday appealed for peace. The vehement reaction
to Wani’s death surprised many in the government. “Indian troopers shoot at us. Our weapon is only the stone,” said one of the protesters, Nisar Ahmad Bhat, 30, who owns a small company that makes cricket bats. “Burhan Wani is our freedom fighter. Obama: ‘I’ve spoken at too many memorials’
President still faces skeptics among police
DALLAS A chastened and humbled President Obama on Tuesday used a memorial service for five slain police officers to call on Americans to overcome their racial divisions and mutual suspicion after years of relentless gun violence and rising social tensions. The president’s impassioned appeal — one he has repeated often throughout his presidency — was made more powerful by confessions of his own doubt about whether he and the country were up to the task. “I am not naive. I have spoken at too many memorials during the course of this presidency,” Obama said in one of the most reflective speeches of his term in office. “I have seen how inadequate my own words have been.” Obama came to Dallas to mourn and pay tribute to five police officers killed last week while protecting marchers who had gathered to protest the deaths of black men at the hands of police in Louisiana and Minnesota. His challenge, in the midst of a deeply polarized presidential election season, was to press Americans to be more empathetic and focus on their shared values. The task was made all the more difficult by the graphic videos of police shootings that have ricocheted across social media during the last week, spawning competing dueling narratives about racial discrimination, inequities in the criminal justice system and the dangers of policing. “Can we find the character, as

As much as those words have comforted blacks, they have rankled many of the nation’s men and women in blue. Why Sanders took so long More than a month after Hillary Clinton clinched the Democratic presidential nomination, runner-up Bernie Sanders endorsed her Tuesday at a rally in the battleground state of New Hampshire. His delay didn’t thrill the Clinton camp or Democratic leaders trying to unite the party. Here are four theories to explain Sanders’ timing. AMBER PHILLIPS Enjoying the spotlight

One of the more cynical views among Democrats is that the 74-year-old senator from Vermont took his time before endorsing Clinton because he was loath to give up his time in this post-race spotlight. Even after she had declared victory, many of his moves made headlines. A more charitable view is that he wanted to keep attention on the causes he fought for — and the most direct way was to stay on stage as long as possible. “There was a need to cement the important parts of his success and ensure it lives on,” said Neil Sroka of the Sanders-supportive Democracy for America.
Sanders finished this campaign with superstar status in the progressive world. His followers were extremely loyal to him — and sometimes antagonistic toward Clinton. He may have thought that endorsing Clinton immediately after railing against the establishment she represents would have rung hollow to his supporters. The effort to unify remains a work in progress. As Democrats wrapped up their party platform meeting this weekend in Orlando, Fla., MSNBC reported that Sanders supporters shouted down an amendment that would have named Clinton the party’s nominee.
In the heat of the primary, Sanders and Clinton did not have a friendly campaign. She said a lot of things about his record in the Senate that were a little loose with the facts, and he was sometimes quite critical and sharp with her. Their differences stemmed not only from personality, but from policy. From Sanders’ perspective, Clinton didn’t go far enough on expanding health care, regulating Wall Street, or making college more affordable. Politicians are human, too, so it’s possible Sanders needed time to cool off and get used to the fact that he’d be voting for Clinton this November.
Success in Washington is directly proportional to how much leverage you have. By withholding his endorsement — and the progressive cred that comes with it — he was able to exact policy changes from Clinton and the party. He got his fellow Democrats to support a $15-an-hour minimum wage, carbon pricing to try to reduce global warming, more regulation of fracking, and a pathway to legalizing marijuana. He also got Clinton to support a public option for health care. The Sanders camp got “at least 80 percent” of what it wanted, his policy director told reporters.

Clinton vetting retired admiral as running mate POLITICS Hillary Clinton is considering retired Navy Adm. James G. Stavridis, above, to be her running mate, according to a person familiar with the vetting process. Stavridis, who left military service as a four-star admiral in 2013, is dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He and the Clinton campaign declined to comment Tuesday. Presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump has vetted retired Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn as a running mate. Stavridis adds a lesser-known figure to a list of current and former lawmakers or government officials known to be considered by Clinton. Stavridis, 61, was supreme allied commander of NATO and commander of U.S. European Command. He also chaired the U.S. Naval Institute, an independent group that serves as a “think tank” for the Navy. Just before Stavridis left the Navy, he was under internal investigation for his use of a military plane to fly with his wife and some staff members to France to attend an event hosted by an international society of Burgundy wine enthusiasts in 2010. Desmond’s rebound out of left field MLB Before he could make the commitment, before he could change positions and cities and leagues all with one signature, Ian Desmond had to speak with the men who would be his new bosses. In a dozen years, he had known and trusted just one organization, the Nationals. A new start merited at least a phone call with the Texas Rangers’ brass. “I just wanted them to hear the conviction I had in my voice, and I wanted to hear what their intent was going to be,” Desmond said. On the other end of the phone were Jon Daniels, the general manager of the Rangers, and Thad Levine, his top lieutenant. This was an unusual request, a free agent player asking to strip away the handlers and speak directly about his own intentions, his own character, his own path.
“From the moment he opens his mouth, JD and I kind of look at each other and say, ‘This is something special,’ ” Levine said. The results of that conversation could be seen this week in San Diego, where Desmond prepared to make his first actual appearance in an All-Star Game on Tuesday (he was selected but injured in 2012). Desmond’s presence there as an outfielder was both stunning and logical. It was stunning because his best year is following his worst, because after he and the Nats couldn’t agree on a long-term contract extension, the best deal he could land was for one year and $8 million with a switch from shortstop to left field. It was logical because those who know him believed this kind of performance — a .322 average with 15 homers and 55 RBIs — was always inside of Desmond. “In the offseason, I couldn’t believe that no other team was trying to get him. . . . What a deal the Rangers got,” Nationals

outfielder Bryce Harper said. That seems obvious now, what with the Rangers owning the best record in the AL, and with Desmond suddenly an essential part of their lineup. But there were steps in this process, including a mental transformation for Desmond, 30, who spent the offseason calling former teammates about the challenges of changing positions, about whether he could pull it off. This wasn’t just a smooth process. From his first day in Rangers camp, Desmond not only took flyballs in left and worked with outfield coach Jayce Tingler, but he stayed through each round of batting practice to shag balls,
then headed over to the minor league side to shag more. Two weeks into the season, he was nearly inept at the plate, hitting .109 without an extra-base hit. After taking two consecutive days off in April, Desmond had two hits with a double in his return and never looked back. He moved to center field in May and has grown comfortable there. Desmond is a free agent again at the end of the year and has certainly rebuilt his market. As if to show he’s still as relevant as ever despite going almost two years without a major win, McIlroy pulled no punches in Scotland on Tuesday leading up to the British Open, which begins Thursday (6 a.m., Golf Channel) at Royal Troon. He called out golf for its lax drug-testing procedures and questioned the relevance of his sport being part of the Olympics. If there was any doubt that he

Jordan Spieth said Tuesday that pulling out of the Olympics a day earlier was the hardest decision he’s ever made, and that it likely will haunt him as he’s watching golfers compete for a gold medal for the first time in 112 years. Spieth cited “health concerns” as his reason for withdrawing, although he said the Zika virus was only part of it. Asked what kept him out, the 22-year-old Texan would only say that it was personal and anyone in his shoes would have made the same choice. “Why was it so hard? Because I’m a huge believer in Olympic golf,” Spieth said in a news conference for the British Open in Scotland. (AP)

Fourteen players who helped the United States win the Women’s World Cup last summer in Canada were named Tuesday to an Olympic squad that will seek a fourth consecutive gold medal next month in Rio de Janeiro. The four players who were not on the World Cup team are Washington Spirit forward Crystal Dunn, Portland Thorns midfielders Lindsey Horan and Allie Long, and forward Mallory Pugh, 18, who will enter UCLA this fall. Turmeric This spice is finding its way into more and more foods this year. “I think it’s a pretty mild flavor that can mix with a lot of things,” said Mike Murray, brand manager for Living Intentions, a brand that makes a turmeric popcorn. Murray called it “one of nature’s greatest superfoods.” Turmeric also popped up in tea (Rishi’s turmeric-ginger chai, The Republic of Tea‘s biodynamic turmeric cinnamon tea), peanuts (Thai-turmeric chili nuts by Feridies) and chocolate (a gingerturmeric dark-milk bar by Vosges).

The enticingly named Fancy Food Show trade convention is a biannual opportunity for makers of specialty foods to get their product in the hands of the retailers they hope will carry it in stores. Certain trends emerged at June’s show in New York. Coconut is still in everything. Matcha continues to spread like green fairy dust. Here are some other up-and-coming foodstuffs. Lilly’s makes a chocolate hummus, and Delighted By makes four: brownie batter, snickerdoodle, orange ginger and chocolate chip.
Any meal can be like a dinner at Minibar bar when whe all of your sauces and juices come in translucent orbs. Bio-Revival makes encapsulated globes of olive oil, balsamic vinegar and various fruit juices. If you want to have some really futuristic hot dogs at your next cookout, they also do ketchup and mustard. Or, you could get a device called the Spherificator and DIY yourself some globular sauces. The thing costs $150, and the spherificatorization possibilities are endless. Tequila! Pickle brine! Robitussin!
Have you been missing out? Every morning, like a chump, do you eat your plain yogurt with fruit, nuts, flaxseeds and/or granola? Clearly, you don’t know that yogurt needs yogurt sauce. Blackberry Patch makes three flavors of yogurt toppings, which are described as being halfway between a syrup and a jam. There was also Chef Ido-brand “finishing sauce,” which can be used for making beautiful swipes of color on your plates if you think you’re really fancy (or you can just use them as dip).

Ambiance: Chill enough for friends, nice enough for dates. The food: Casolare is devoted to coastal Italian cuisine — not just a few regions, but “the entire boot,” Schlow says. The food is fresh and light, with lots of olive oil, vegetables and, of course, seafood. It’s the way Schlow says he typically likes to eat. The chef has a story for almost every dish on the menu. Among his favorites is Mama Zecca’s Eggplant, based on a dish served by his friend’s mother, a “super nonna,” Schlow says. It consists of many layers of thinly sliced eggplant interspersed with small amounts of mozzarella, tomato sauce and Parmigiano-Reggiano. The drinks: Italian wines, local beers and cocktails. Sketch comedy’s high body count, explained Going for gruesome can be the only way to surprise the audience COMEDY On “Saturday Night Live’s” May season finale, a “Dead Poets Society” parody came to a bloody conclusion when Pete Davidson got decapitated by a ceiling fan. Plenty of “Inside Amy Schumer” sketches devolve into suicide or cannibalism. “Key & Peele” often end gags with somebody dying. Sketch comedy allows for this kind of finality: The three minutes are up, and you’ll never need these characters again, so why not get rid of them for good? “If you come out of a sketch background, you’ve written a lot of sketches where people explode or their heads fall off,” says Jay Martel, executive
producer of “Key & Peele.” The real reason so many sketches end at The End, says Jordan Peele, is because “the highest height of life, really, sort of keeps rearing its head. Which is death.” The ideal ending is satisfying and surprising while staying true to the comedic game that preceded it. It must contain the one line after which nothing else could possibly be said. Why is this the most burdensome element of sketch writing? “If you’re writing a five-act play or a movie, you’ve got all these strands you can put together,” Martel says. “But with a sketch, it’s the equivalent of stopping a car on a dime. You have to stick the landing and make it satisfying on a lot of different levels. And obviously, you want to get the biggest

laugh of the sketch, too.” One more thing: You want it to be a complete surprise. Maybe that’s one more reason why so many sketches spiral off into absurdity, or total annihilation. If you’re playing along, you are still, as an audience member, operating within the framework of that sketch. So the only way to catch a savvy viewer off guard is to pull something in from outside the frame, to go beyond. “Some people point out that [‘Key & Peele’] has this strong sci-fi fantasy element running through it, and I think a lot of that has to do with finding an ending,” Martel said. “Because sometimes you can’t find one in this world. You have to sort of take the leap into another world in order to pull it off.” JESSICA GOLDSTEIN

Kennedy cousin at center of true crime story In a book released Tuesday, “Framed: Why Michael Skakel Spent over a Decade in Prison for a Murder He Didn’t Commit,” Robert F. Kennedy Jr. makes the case that two visitors from New York City killed Martha Moxley in 1975, not his cousin, Michael Skakel, who was convicted in 2002 of killing the girl when they were both 15. Skakel was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. But a judge in 2013 ordered a new trial after finding that a defense attorney failed to adequately represent Skakel. A ruling is expected later this year from the state Supreme Court on a request by prosecutors to reinstate the murder conviction. Skakel is free on bail. (AP) DICTATORS
Saddam Hussein novella to publish in December The English version of a novella by Saddam Hussein is slated for release in December, the 10-year anniversary of the Iraqi president’s execution. British publishing house Hesperus says the work of fiction is similar to “Game of Thrones.” The novella has been published in other languages as “Begone Devils” and “Get Out, You Damned One,” and its plot reportedly centers on an ancient tribe that defeats an invading force.
