Weekend Pass FILM RIFFS

Get the Show on the Road In “Tammy,” in theaters now, a woman (Melissa McCarthy) tries to find herself (and, hopefully, clean bathrooms) on a cross-country road trip. Taking to the highway is a cinematic tradition that often leads to self-discovery (and, hopefully, clean bathrooms). KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

1 ‘The Road’ In this 2009 adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel, a man and his son travel on foot in a post-apocalyptic world. The boy whines constantly that it’s boring and when are they gonna be there and there’s a McDonald’s RIGHT THERE CAN WE STOP?!

Two guys on motorcycles head out to find the spirit of America in this 1969 classic. They find a lot of violence and drugs. So … success!

3 ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’ We’re not running this blurb this week. Moose out front shoulda told you.

4 ‘It Happened One Night’

IFC MIDNIGHT

There’s a scandalous part in this road-trip rom-com where Claudette Colbert shows off almost her entire leg. Above the knee, people. Proof that our moral decay started in 1934.

WARNER BROS.

2 ‘Easy Rider’

Straight-trippin’ Melissa McCarthy menaces the country in “Tammy.”

5 ‘Thelma & Louise’ We all know how this 1991 film ends, but remember it’s the journey that’s important, not the destination. Unless the destination is the Grand Canyon and you’re going to awesomely drive off of it. Then the destination is also important.

‘The Shining’ and ‘Room 237’:

Combine horror with education Saturday when the AFI Silver presents a double feature of “The Shining” and “Room 237.” The former is terrifying; the latter terrifyingly obsessive. The 2012 documentary from director Rodney Ascher, above, is filled with film fanatics who’ve examined in freakish detail the symbolism of Kubrick’s 1980 film. So you get to see a movie, and then you get to see a movie about that movie, and then you can go out afterward and talk about the movie and the movie about the movie. Then you can go home and have nightmares about a guy chasing you with an ax.
