Finger Hidden Under Coat Trick Works for First Time A man has been jailed on burglary after Pittsburgh police say he entered a home uninvited, and was subdued by a resident wielding a fake gun. The resident told police he didn’t hear 23-year-old Kymarr Freeman enter the home at about noon Sunday. When the resident saw and questioned Freeman, he allegedly said he was looking for someone else. Not believing Freeman’s explanation, the man held Freeman at bay with what police are describing only as a “prop” handgun until officers arrived. (AP) COST OF LIVING

A demonstrator dressed as the Bible and carrying the sign “Use me not for your bigotry stands outside the Supreme Court on Monday, awaiting the court’s decision.

Will this affect me? Theoretically, more than half of employed Americans could lose their contraception coverage because of the ruling. According to studies from Columbia University and New York University, the “closely held corporations covered in the opinion employ 52 percent of the workforce. But that doesn’t mean they all will nix coverage. First, most large employers had already offered coverage before the Affordable Care Act mandated it. And few have fought the mandate. Second, federal law makes clear that companies seeking religious exemptions must demonstrate sincere religious beliefs.

Could this decision affect more than just birth control? Justice Samuel Alito denied that the decision would allow some businesses to not offer other medical services, such as blood transfusions or vaccinations. “Our decision in these cases is concerned solely with the contraceptive mandate, Alito wrote. Doctors Group: Healthy Women Don’t Need Routine Pelvic Exams Health The nation’s second-largest physicians organization said Monday that healthy women who are not pregnant do not need routine pelvic exams, a controversial recommendation based on its analysis that, on balance, the manual screening does more harm than good. The American College of Physicians, which represents 137,000 internal medicine physicians and related specialists, said the diagnostic procedure causes some women discomfort, anxiety, pain and additional medical costs and may keep

some from seeing their doctors. Yet it does little to detect ovarian cancer or other disorders. As a result, in a new guideline it issued Monday, the organization “recommends against performing screening pelvic examination in asymptomatic, non-pregnant, adult women” who have no elevated risk of cancer or other disease. Healthy women should continue to have Pap smears as recommended by their doctors, the group said. The guideline was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the ACP’s journal. More U.S. Troops The U.S. is sending an additional 300 U.S. troops to Iraq to beef up security at the U.S. Embassy and elsewhere in the Baghdad area to protect U.S. citizens and property, officials said Monday. That raises the total U.S. troop presence in Iraq to approximately 750, the Pentagon said. (AP)

Analysis One of the great ironies of the battle for Iraq is that for all the billions spent on the war on terror, what may ultimately defeat al-Qaeda isn’t the United States, but a group from within the jihadist movement. It didn’t take drones. Or the surge. It took a charismatic, emergent leader known as Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who recently threw off the yoke of al-Qaeda’s command and decided he and his militant pals would do their own thing. They would become the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, which on Sunday declared the restoration of the 7th-century Islamic caliphate. Baghdadi would rule over its vast tracts of captured territory in northern Iraq and Syria, the message said. And all Muslims worldwide

Analysts warn against underestimating ISIS. Peter Neumann, who studies radicalization at King’s College London, explained to The Guardian: “For ideological jihadists, the caliphate is the ultimate aim, and ISIS — in their eyes — have come closer to realizing that vision than anyone else. … This could be the end of al-Qaeda.” TERRENCE McCOY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Researchers and witnesses tell of coyote-wolf hybrid in the D.C. region

Not to humans, though outdoor cats and unattended dogs have reason to be concerned. The most important thing is to walk your dog with a leash, says Rock Creek Park’s acting deputy superintendent, Jeremy Sweat. Coyotes have been living in Rock Creek Park since at least 2004, and there have been only two reported attacks, both on dogs that were running through the woods off-leash, he says. “Especially in the spring and early summer, a lot of these coyotes might have dens in the park. They might have young pups. If a dog approaches them off leash, they are much more likely to act aggressively to protect their young or protect their territory,” Sweat says. If the presence of coyotes or coywolves makes D.C. slightly scarier for pets, that goes double for rodents, says Megan Draheim, a professor at Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources, National Capital Region. “They eat a lot of rats and mice,” she says. “That’s something we can all appreciate.” S.D.

Coyote vs. Wolf Comparison

PRONUNCIATION

On an overcast morning in May, Melissa Farley, 25, and her dog, Kai, went for a hike in Rock Creek Park. They were walking on the outskirts of the public golf course when two creatures emerged from the woods. “At first, I thought they were stray dogs or lost dogs,” Farley says. “They were really beautiful, kind of grayish and cool in color, and almost as big as Kai.” Kai, a 60-pound German shepherd mix, took off after them. Farley listened helplessly as the animals fought in the underbrush. When Kai returned, dog and owner sprinted back to their Brightwood condo. When Farley reported the incident to rangers the next day, they told her she’d had a run-in with Rock Creek Park’s resident coyotes. Farley, however, isn’t so sure. “I’ve seen a lot of coyotes out west,” says Farley, who recently returned to D.C. after six years in Los Angeles. “This was no average coyote.” Farley probably saw a coywolf — a coyote-wolf hybrid — says Javier Monzon, a genetics researcher at Stony Brook University in New York. Regular coyotes, which are native to the American Southwest and the great plains area, tend to be tawny-colored and weigh around 25 pounds. Coywolves run upward of 45 pounds and come in an array of hues, including gray and black. “We’ve known for a while that most Eastern coyotes are hybrids to some degree, and now we’re finding a greater degree of hybridization than anyone expected,” Monzon says.

Are they dangerous?

Perfectly adapted to living among humans, coywolves eat just about anything, including deer, mice, feral cats and last night’s leftovers from your garbage can.

Western Coyote 25 pounds on average Long ears with pointed tips Narrow snout Omnivore Yips

Eastern Timber Wolf 57 pounds on average Short ears with rounded tips Blocky snout Carnivore Howls

Researchers quoted for this story all pronounced the hybrid word with a first syllable that sounds like “koi,” the Japanese fish, or “coy,” the word for shy and coquettish, not like the “kai” sound in “coyote.” S.D.

In lay terms: The coyotes in Rock Creek Park are probably coywolves. Just a few hundred years ago, coyotes stuck to the plains between the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River. As humans killed off wolves, coyotes took over their terri-

tory. The coyotes that pressed north into Canada came across the remnants of wolf populations and interbred, creating a hybrid creature that’s small enough to live undetected among humans, but large enough to feast on fawns (though perhaps not full-sized deer). In other words, they are perfectly adapted to the I-95 corridor, Monzon says. “T he more deer t here are around, the more wolf-like the coywolves tend to be,” he says. Coywolves are about 62 percent coyote, 27 percent wolf and 11 percent dog, according to a 2013 paper by Monzon published in Molecular Ecology. Researchers have found

A Rock Creek Park spokesman denies their existence in D.C., however. “We don’t have any evidence to suspect that our coyotes here in Rock Creek Park are anything other than just normal coyotes,” says the park’s acting deputy superintendent, Jeremy Sweat. Game officials tend to shy away from the term “coywolf,” since it sounds scary, like “werewolf,” says Megan Draheim, a professor at Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources, National Capital Region. “It ’s not my favorite term

either,” she says. “To be a coywolf sounds like half-coyote, half-wolf, and that’s not really what we’re talking about. We are talking about coyotes that have interbred with timber wolves and have some wolf genes in them. It can be fairly negligible or it can be more,” she says.

“Most Eastern coyotes are hybrids to some degree, and now we’re finding a greater degree of hybridization than anyone expected.” — JAV IER MONZON, A GENETICS RESEARCHER AT STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY WHO STUDIES COYWOLVES

Wolf genes seem to be spreadi ng qu ick ly a nd t horough ly through the Eastern coyote population, Monzon says. His 2013 study found that even Ohio coyotes had wolf genes, a surprising finding that suggests coywolves are moving south from New Eng-

land through the D.C. area and circling back westward. We won’t know the precise genetic makeup of Rock Creek Park’s canids until someone conducts a study, but they look pretty wolf-y to D.C. resident Gareth Wishart. The 28-year-old conservationist, who’s tracked coyotes in Montana and wolves in Spain, says he’s seen coywolves in Rock Creek Park on two different occasions, most recently in January. “It came to within about 8 yards of us,” says Wishart, who took a friend to the park for some wildlife spotting one evening. “Their size is really noticeable — how much bigger they are than coyotes out west. Though Kai escaped with just two puncture wounds on his hindquarters, both dog and human are wary of the woods these days. “I liked it better when I was growing up in D.C., and we didn’t have any coyotes or coywolves or whatever,” she says. “But they’re here now, so what are you going to do?” SADIE DINGFELDER (E XPRESS)

Who Are the Worst Drivers in D.C.? Washington It’s time for everyone’s favorite quiz show, D.C. Traffic Nightmares! Today’s question: If you’re involved in a traffic crash in the District, chances are the other driver is: 1. A Virginian desperately searching for a bridge home. 2. A Marylander headed to Georgetown for a haircut. 3. A D.C. resident caught in the zany crisscrossing of traffic. 4. A bewildered tourist holding a map of downtown upside down. This matters only because

Backstory In its annual report, “America’s Best Drivers,” Allstate rates D.C. dead last among 200 big cities. Second to last? That would be Baltimore, suggesting that the skills of Maryland drivers are somewhat suspect. The analysis says D.C. drivers go 4.8 years between accidents. At the other end of the spectrum, drivers in Fort Collins, Colo., are involved in fender benders every 13.9 years, on average. The D.C. crash statistics revealed that men were twice as likely as women to be involved in crashes. Drivers in the 26-30 age group had the highest number of crashes (10 percent), followed by the 31-39 bracket (9 percent). (T WP)

human beings tend to blame whole classes of people other than themselves for their woes. Well, it’s somebody’s fault, and in 2012 people who have D.C. driver’s licenses were involved in more of the 29,725 crashes that occurred in the city than anyone else, according to an analysis of crash statistics

No More Grain Alcohol in Md., and Other New Laws Annapolis Today is the start-date for a number of new laws in both states, plus the District. Here are a few of the new rules to follow.

Maryland In Montgomery County, the implementation of the so-called “Drybar bill” means that salons can now obtain a beer and wine license, and serve their clients alcoholic beverages while coiffing their hair. Maryland liquor stores and retailers can no longer sell grain alcohol that’s 190-proof, or 95 percent alcohol, such as Everclear. University presidents and public health advocates fought for years to have the potent booze banned, as it has long been a popular choice for college students looking to get smashed. Retailers who keep selling it risk a fine of up to $1,000. A bill banning Vaportinis, which make it possible to inhale alcohol through a glass straw, also is taking effect today.

by Howard University’s Transportation Safety Data Center. D.C. residents experienced 11,007 crashes that year, 37 percent of the city’s total. Drivers from Maryland were a close second with 33 percent of the total. They were better behaved — or luckier — than in the two pre-

vious years, when they were the city’s leading metal crunchers, with more than 37 percent of the total each year. Virginians? Veritable saints when driving through the nation’s capital. At their worst, in 2011, Virginians had a part in just 14 percent of all crashes in the city. They had a tad fewer in the years on either side of 2011. And the tourists? Hard to say. Between 8 and 9 percent of the crashes during the three years studied involved drivers from other states. Then there is the unexplained category designated “unknown.” Those drivers account for between 1,000 and 2,400 crashes each year. ASHLEY HALSEY III (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Most employers must now pay their workers at least $9.50 per hour, up from the previous minimum of $8.25. The change is part of a phased-in minimum wage hike approved by the D.C. Council last year. MUGGLE PLAYERS take part in QuidCon, the annual conference of the International Quidditch Association. The broomstick-riding fictional sport from the “Harry Potter” series is becoming an increasing popular real-life sport. As more players embrace it, they distance themselves from Potter-verse fandom.

A 23-year-old man was shot and killed early Monday in Northeast, according to D.C. police, the city’s fifth killing in four days. In other violence, police shut down a nightclub in Northwest on Saturday after being called on two incidents. The slayings — including three women found dead in residences in what authorities say are unrelated crimes — occurred on the first weekend this year in which officers across D.C. were called into duty for 48 hours as part of a controversial policy called All Hands On Deck. Klinsmann unsure how forward will be used against Belgium

Where to Watch While the organizers of Soccer in the Circle weren’t able to raise enough funds to screen another match in Dupont Circle, Mayor Vincent Gray announced that the D.C. government will host a viewing party in Freedom Plaza. Jozy Altidore is available to play for the United States in today’s World Cup second-round game against Belgium, but it does not appear the forward is ready to return to the starting lineup. Altidore strained his left hamstring in the Americans’ opener against Ghana on June 16 and didn’t play in their next two games. “We don’t know how much because we need to see how he’s going, but he’s available,” U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said Monday. “How many minutes? We will see that during the game.” Altidore had been working out on his own, jogging around the field at the Americans’ training camp at Sao Paulo Futebol Clube. Klinsmann said he has to determine “how much work is in his legs.”

U.S. forward Jozy Altidore stretches during a training session Saturday.

Aron Johannsson replaced Altidore at forward for the remainder of the game against Ghana. But Klinsmann switched from a 4-4-2 formation to a 4-5-1 against Portugal and Germany with a fifth midfielder instead of a second forward. Altidore has 23 goals in 71 international appearances and is the top forward on the American roster. “Just having him with us tomorrow is huge,” Klinsmann said.

WORLD CUP

Mathieu Valbuena, right, celebrates after France’s second goal Monday.

Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama had just made a superb save to tip over Karim Benzema’s header, but he flapped at the ball from the ensuing corner and Pogba pounced in the 79th minute to nod in his first goal of the tournament.

1. Tough defense: Belgium didn’t concede a single goal in open play during the group stage. Thibaut Courtois, at 22, is already one of the top goalkeepers around. He anchored Atletico Madrid to the Spanish league title and also the Champions League final. 2. “Kampfschwein” coach: If you are looking for a fighting spirit, coach Marc Wilmots fits the bill. Such was the toughness of his attitude and the challenges he made as a player with Schalke in the Bundesliga, the working class fan base called him Kampfschwein — which translates as fighting boar. As a coach, he goes looking for victories at the World Cup whether they involve beautiful football or not.

France, Germany Reach Quarters Paul Pogba scored with a late header to finally break Nigeria’s stubborn resistance and Joseph Yobo added an own-goal as France won 2-0 to reach the World Cup quarterfinals on Monday. Four years ago, France crashed out of the group stage, shamed a nation by going on strike and was jeered by its own fans and lambasted by politicians in the fallout from an embarrassing tournament. “I’m proud of my players because we’re coming back from very far. I think we’ve given a lot of pleasure back to our fans,” France coach Didier Deschamps said. “I think there were 5,000 here and millions back home who will feel proud.” Pogba’s crucial goal came after Nigeria’s best spell of the match.

4 Things to Know About Belgium

Substitute Andre Schuerrle and Mesut Ozil scored in extra time to lead Germany over an aggressive Algeria 2-1 and into the World Cup quarterfinals. Thomas Mueller provided a cross from the left flank that was slightly behind Schuerrle. The Germany forward dragged his leg and backheeled the ball into the far corner in the 92nd minute, leaving goalkeeper Rais Mbolhi with no chance. Ozil added the second in the 120th minute, and Abdelmoumene Djabou pulled one back in injury time for Algeria. Germany will next face France on Friday at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Each team won their group with seven points, going 2-0-1. (AP)

3. Eden Hazard: The playmaker has huge expectations to live up to. At 23, he is already among a handful of European players with global appeal. He is now the creative genius at Chelsea and is seeking to emulate that for Belgium at the World Cup. So far, the results have been mixed. 4. Match revisited: Since Wilmots and his U.S. counterpart Jurgen Klinsmann get on well, the team had planned to play a training match in Sao Paulo just days before the start of their campaigns. The threat of strikes and traffic jams forced it to be called off at the last moment. Now they will meet today in Salvador. But this will be anything but a gentle practice match. RAF CASERT (AP)

As the rain at Wimbledon wreaks havoc with the schedule, and players start to complain, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic have found little reason to worry about the weather. It helped that both got to play Monday on Centre Court, the only spot at the All England Club with a retractable roof. And with back-to-back, straightset victories, they moved closer to a semifinal showdown that would be a rematch of the final last year, when Murray beat Djokovic to become the first British man since 1936 to win Wimbledon. It stayed that way for the topseeded Djokovic, and the 2011 champion beat No. 14 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for the 11th consecutive time, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka was less than pleased that his third-round match was put off from Saturday to Monday. He got through it quickly, defeating 45th-ranked Denis Istomin 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in less than 1½ hours. Wawrinka will be on No. 2 Court today against No. 19 Feliciano Lopez, who eliminated the last American singles player, No. 9 John Isner. For the Rangers last season, Stralman emerged as a reliable second-pairing defenseman — which is something the Capitals need. He had just one goal and 13 points last season, but he was among the league leaders in puck possession at his position. The 27-yearold was arguably the Rangers’ most consistent blueliner during their run to the Stanley Cup final. Stralman may have priced himself out of New York, which has an excess of key free agents to potentially sign this summer. He could be a cost-effective alternative for teams seeking a defensive boost.

Ehrhoff became available Sunday when Buffalo bought out the remaining seven years of the defenseman’s 10-year contract. The 31-year-old is capable of logging big minutes, leading Sabres defensemen in even-strength, power-play and short-handed ice time per game last season. He also posted relatively strong possession numbers on a team that was weak in that regard; the percentage of even-strength shot attempts that belonged to Buffalo increased substantially when he was on the ice. Ehrhoff is conceivably the most complete defenseman available.

Top Priorities Marcin Gortat, Center

Likely to Return Kevin Seraphin, Center

Up in the Air Al Harrington, Forward

After surrendering a first-round pick in a deep draft to get him and watching him emerge as an invaluable and durable defensive cog, the Wizards will make every effort to bring back Gortat. In his lone season in Washington, he averaged 13.2 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 81 games and meshed well with Nene. Gortat, 30, is still expected to attract interest from Miami, Cleveland and the Los Angeles Lakers, among others. He could command a new deal worth the same $12 million annual salary of Minnesota’s Nikola Pekovic — or more.

Seraphin had a disappointing fourth season in Washington, took steps back on both ends of the floor, and was rarely used in the playoffs. But the team is still expected to tender a $3.9 million qualifying offer to the 24-year-old, 6-foot-9 big man because he remains the most offensively skilled low-post reserve and provides some insurance if Gortat leaves in free agency.

He hinted at retirement several times, but the 34-year-old said recently he is healthy and looking to continue his career. It could happen in Washington if the team is unable to find a younger replacement at a similar cost.

Ariza picked an opportune time for a career resurgence. The Wizards have already committed about $10 million to the small forward position next season in Otto Porter Jr. and Martell Webster, but they have a greater need to retain Ariza with Porter lacking experience and Webster expected to miss the start of the season after surgery to repair a herniated disk. He should get a raise on the $7.7 million salary he received last season, but Washington has a number that it is unwilling to surpass and is unlikely to get into a bidding war with other teams.

Drew Gooden, Forward A late-season pickup who helped the Wizards maintain their playoff hopes after Nene had a late-season injury, Gooden was so confident about his chances to return that he didn’t clear out his locker. He is unlikely to demand a huge salary since the Milwaukee Bucks still owe him $6.7 million next season as part of the amnesty provision.

Glen Rice Jr., Guard Rice would become a free agent only if the Wizards decide to waive him for the cost of $400,000. After rarely seeing him in action last season, Washington plans to keep the 23-yearold swingman around and will need some perimeter depth, especially with Webster’s back injury.

Trevor Booker, Forward Nene’s injuries last year helped give Booker the long-awaited chance to show what he is capable of doing. But after starting 45 games his qualifying offer increased from $3.4 million to $4.7 million. Washington still wants to bring him back on a multiyear deal with a much lower salary, but Booker can sign with the team of his choice as an unrestricted free agent.

Garrett Temple, Guard They would love to bring back Temple because of his versatility, familiarity with the system and willingness to defend every position on the perimeter.

Likely gone Chris Singleton, Forward Singleton is a hard worker, but a divorce is probably for the best since he could never find a role during his three seasons in Washington.

On the Run in Washington Bring your sneakers to meet up with the two Kenyan athletes at the Folklife Festival

TEDDY WOLFF PHOTOS (FOR EXPRESS)

On the back of Jim Kaufman’s car is a bumper sticker that reads: “In my dreams, I am a Kenyan.” So the 42-year-old marathoner from Silver Spring didn’t head to the National Mall on Friday just to go for a jog. He went to live out his fantasy. “I’m excited. And a little scared,” Kaufman admitted as he stood by the “Kenya: Mambo Poa” section of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival (festival.si.edu). The performances, concerts and demos wouldn’t start until later that morning. But he’d shown up promptly at 10:30 a.m. for a “fun run” led by Henry Wanyoike and Joseph Kibunja, the pair of Kenyan athletes at the festival representing their country’s most celebrated sport. Wanyoike and Kibunja are sharing their stories throughout the festival — which picks up again on Wednesday and concludes Sunday — at scheduled talks. To really introduce themselves and explain what they do, the two are also inviting people to brave D.C.’s heat and humidity for daily, on-the-go running sessions that are customized for whoever shows up. “We run at their speed to motivate them,” says Wanyoike, who is happy to answer every question thrown at him, whether it’s about his training strategies, his choice of footwear or what it’s like to run blind. Kenya has produced an endless list of running champions, but Wanyoike stands out: He lost his vision overnight after suffering a stroke in 1995 at the age of

Henry Wanyoike, right, is blind, but he’s able to run thanks to a piece of string and his track guide, Joseph Kibunja, left.

The pair of Kenyan runners are leading fun runs daily throughout the festival.

20. He’d been a runner since childhood, when he had to dash 3 miles barefoot each way to school, and went on to win local competitions. After the stroke, however, Wanyoike abandoned his athletic ambitions. Three years later, a rehabilitation center introduced him to the idea of running with a sighted partner, and Wanyoike began to get back on track. He persuaded his longtime pal Kibunja to serve as his guide, and the two started to learn how to train while holding a short string between them and to communicate even when out of breath. Kibunja, who wasn’t a runner, worried he wouldn’t be able to keep up with the demands of the job: “If I’m not comfortable, I can’t guide.” But their teamwork paid off.

Soon, they were bringing home gold medals from the Paralympics and championships all over the world with their impressive times — close to 15 minutes in the 5,000 meter, 30 minutes in the 10,000 meter and 2½ hours in the marathon. That’s even speedier than it sounds, Wanyoike notes, because

they have to slow down at turns and water stops so they don’t crash and fall down, and overtaking other runners is a much trickier proposition as a duo. They motivate each other to meet up at 6 a.m. every day for practice in their hometown in Kenya 20 kilometers from Nairobi and 2,000 meters above sea level. Depending on which event they’re preparing for, they exercise as many as three times a day, not only running, but also lifting weights at the gym and cross-training. (“We use a tandem bicycle,” Wanyoike says.) The rest of the time, they’re working through the Henry Wanyoike Foundation (henrywanyoike foundation.org) to speak at schools to inspire a new generation of athletes and change perceptions of disability in Kenya. “To help that community, we go the extra mile,” Kibunja says. Hearing about all of these accomplishments was enough to help Kaufman go another mile as well — the fun run group he joined set out that morning on a 4-mile route, but decided to make it 5 instead. “This is nothing for them. I don’t think Henry even broke a sweat,” Kaufman marveled. Reality turned out to be better than any dream. VICK Y HALLET T (E XPRESS)

Meanwhile … China, the other country that’s being celebrated during the Folklife Festival, also has some health advice for visitors. The daily tai chi program offered in the “People’s Park” features a demonstration, and then turns into instruction — so you can see firsthand that moving your arms and breathing deeply can reduce stress levels.

Her Friend Feels Like Your Foe My wife recently reconnected with a friend who’s a mess: She’s had her condo go into foreclosure, clearly drinks too much and is divorced after cheating on her husband. I’m not worried my wife will do these things too, but she’s a very loyal person and wants to help her friend. My concern is that’s going to take a lot of energy and be an intrusion into our marriage. Miserable About the Move My fiance and I are moving across the country for his job. I’m not happy, even though it makes sense for him to take this position and will be a great step for his career. How do I get over my resentment, which I know isn’t fair to him? GRUMBLING It’s hard to know if your resentment is a nat u ra l, tempora r y-ish reaction to the upheaval of leaving the life you’ve built here, or part of an underlying dynamic that’s problematic. Is there genuine reciprocity between you — maybe he’ll move someday for your job, or, if his job will always take precedence, maybe there are other ways you’re put first? Or do you feel you’re always second fiddle? W hat exactly are the aspects

of the move that are bothering you, and how can you maximize your ability to overcome them, including asking for his help? Time and communication are your main hopes here: Talk out the nature of your feelings, and their antecedents, f irst w ith yourself, and then in a palatable way with him. And make it a project for both of you. It’ll be great practice for your marriage, wherever you may live.

Attacking this friend’s character won’t fi x anything. I understand your concerns, but your wife is in the friendship to stay, and focusing on aspects of this person that you don’t approve of will only make her feel defensive of her friend, and that her own judgment is being attacked. Sometimes helping friends whose lives have become a “mess” is the very definition of friendship. That said, of course you deserve to not have your marriage damaged by any outside party. So, set specific boundaries together, like yay for occasional dinner invites but nay for loaning money. Or limits on enabling her drinking. Or a specific plan of how she’ll help her friend build a plan. Don’t reject the friendship out of hand, but collaborate so it won’t drag you — and your marriage — down.

Keep your American celebration going at Monocacy National Battlefield (5201 Urbana Pike, Frederick, Md.), where the National Museum of Civil War Medicine is hosting a free talk at 2 p.m. Saturday. Dr. John M. Rathgeb will detail injuries sustained by Union and Confederate soldiers at the Battle of Antietam, and explain how their treatment at the time compares to modern orthopedic practices. Now 61, she’s much more judicious about what she eats — few fried foods and lots of salads — and makes a concerted effort to be active. “What works for me is walking,” says Merkerson, who strives for 4 to 5 miles a few times a week. She also keeps tabs on her A1C number, which is a measurement of one’s blood sugar level over the past two to three months. By discussing the results with her doctor, Merkerson knows when she needs to tweak her behavior. “As you get older, it’s harder to change habits,” Merkerson admits. But for a role model, she has her 87-year-old mom, a Type 2 diabetic who celebrated her birthday two years ago by skydiving in high heels. “She’s one of the healthiest people I know.” VICK Y HALLET T (E XPRESS)

S. Epatha Merkerson learned she had Type 2 diabetes at NBC4’s health expo.

Actress S. Epatha Merkerson urges other Type 2 diabetics to control the disease

MERCK

When actress S. Epatha Merkerson got her blood sugar tested at the NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo in D.C. in 2003, she thought she was just doing a public service. “See, this doesn’t hurt,” Merkerson remembers saying into the camera to encourage Washingtonians to try it too. She was feeling good about herself after the segment, and when the doctor who’d administered the test asked her to

come back, Merkerson figured he wanted to take a photo together. Instead, he told her to make an appointment with her physician in New York. Her subsequent diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes shouldn’t have come as a surprise, says Merkerson, who’s best known for her role on “Law & Order” as no-nonsense Lt. Anita Van Buren: “I had a family history, and I was eating like a 12-year-old.” Her father had died from diabetes complications, her grandmother had lost her sight and her uncle had amputations. But like so many Americans, Merkerson hadn’t been proactive

in her health care. Over the past 11 years, she’s worked diligent ly to change that for herself. This spring, she teamed up with drugmaker Merck to launch “America’s Diabetes Challenge: Get to Your Goals” (americasdiabeteschallenge.com), a program urging everyone with Type 2 diabetes to talk to their doctors, make plans and figure out how to stick with them. Last week, the nationwide tour brought Merkerson back to D.C., where she appeared at an American Diabetes Association event at Arena Stage. Her message? “This is a manageable disease, and you can be in charge,” she says. In a diabetes treatment program, Merkerson notes, patients are responsible for two separate but equally important factors: diet

‘All the Light We Cannot See’ Doerr’s two protagonists are children who have been engulfed in the horror of World War II. Werner is an orphan in Germany who earns a place at a nightmarish training school for the Nazi military elite. He crosses paths with Marie-Laure, the blind daughter of the master locksmith at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. Cutting back and forth in time, Doerr creates nearly unbearable suspense until at last the puzzle-box of the plot slides open to reveal the treasure hidden inside. AMANDA VAILL (TWP)

‘Fourth of July Creek’ BY SMITH HENDERSON ($26.99 ECCO) Pete Snow, a social worker in a sparsely populated Montana in the early 1980s, takes on the case of a scurvy 11-year-old boy whose dad is a violent fundamentalist living in the woods. Can Pete win the anarchist’s trust before he sparks a deadly confrontation with government officials? Henderson ties that conflict to the broader currents of American culture. The result is a story simultaneously intimate and grand. RON CHARLES (TWP)

‘Lovers at the Chameleon Club, Paris 1932’ BY FRANCINE PROSE ($26.99 HARPER)

The smoky pages of this historical novel are inspired by a 1932 photograph of Violette Morris, the French athlete and crossdresser who later betrayed her country to Hitler. At once serious and gossipy, “Lovers at the Chameleon Club” is a collection of documents written by people with wildly different perspectives. The interlocking voices re-create Paris as it devolves from the decadence of the 1930s to the terror of the Occupation. R.C.

‘The Young Desire It’ BY KENNETH MACKENZIE (PAPERBACK, $14.95 TEXT CLASSICS)

Spread These Words SUMMER READING

The year’s best fiction (so far) includes tales of angst and stories of betrayal TE X T: THE WASHINGTON POST; PHOTO: DEB LINDSEY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

First published in Australia in 1937 when the author was in his early 20s, this forgotten classic depicts school life, loneliness and sexual yearning. At 14, Charles Fox is sent to a prestigious private boarding school, where he’s taunted by older students. But his joy for learning is fostered by a lonely classics teacher who finds himself attracted to Charles. The novel’s evocations of the Australian landscape counterpoint the bustling scenes at school, adding a feverish poetry to its strange benevolence. MICHAEL DIRDA (TWP)

‘You Should Have Known’ BY JEAN HANFF KORELITZ ($26 GRAND CENTRAL)

This compelling suspense tale reminds us that smart women sometimes can make the most foolish choices. Grace is a marriage counselor whose husband, Jonathan, is an oncologist who’s tirelessly devoted his compassion — along with other parts of himself — to his young female patients. When the attractive mother of one of his patients is murdered, the police identify Jonathan as the prime suspect. The novel serves up witty observations about the higher reaches of Manhattan society. Area punk band Priests is set to perform at this year’s Fort Reno series.

Fort Reno Concerts Back On Live Entertainment After announcing its cancellation last week, Fort Reno organizer Amanda MacKaye said the concert series will go on as planned, the outcome of a meeting Monday between MacKaye and National Park Service and U.S. Park Police officials. “There is a need for Park Police presence during the event, and we didn’t communicate that in a timely manner and in a formal manner to Ms. MacKaye,” said Tara D. Morrison of the Park Service on Monday on “The Kojo Nnamdi Show.” MacKaye wrote on the Fort Reno website on Thursday that the Park Service and the U.S. Park Police had withheld the series’ operating permit until organizers agreed to pay to post a police officer at each concert. The cost, MacKaye wrote, would have doubled Fort Reno’s budget. Within hours, a Change .org petition had been created to request that the Park Service and U.S. Park Police allow the series — which takes place in Tenleytown’s Fort Reno Park — to continue. MacKaye said on the show that the series will take place over eight concerts July 7-31. Bands including Priests and Title Tracks will perform. L AVA N YA R A M A N AT H A N (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Makes No Apologies Robin Thicke’s ‘Paula’ will certainly make headlines, if not any lasting impressions Album Review Things are constantly getting interesting for Robin Thicke, but never for his music, which is both incredibly dull and incredibly popular. The disparity might make him the leading hack of his generation, but if he

stays on course, Thicke won’t have to rely on his songs to be remembered. Thicke most recently made head lines for his galactically publicized separation with Paula Patton, his wife of nine years, this year, followed by an attempt to win her back by naming his new album, out now, “Paula.” As far as mea culpas go, this one is smug, bawdy and inco-

Thicke’s new album asks to be taken seriously, but exclusively as a plea to “get her back,” as Thicke croons on the album’s tepid first single. And while his lyrics feel as lazy and careless as ever, Thicke is also shrewd enough to defuse his most provocative lines with silliness. “Lock the Door” is the biggest eyebrow-raiser, a gospel-ish tune about being locked out of the house in which Thicke pleads, “At least open the doggie door, throw a

Throughout, Thicke fails to sell whatever it is he’s trying to sell. If he isn’t on the radio, he isn’t in the discussion. That’s when things finally stop getting interesting. “The laboratory gave me strict instructions to issue no comment.” — TILDA SWINTON IN A REDDIT AMA responds

Sunday to Reddit user RizzoFromDigg’s theory that “you’re a clone of David Bowie created right around the Modern Love era so that he could continue being a musician as well as star in more movies.” Another gem from the discussion: If she hadn’t become an actress, Swinton said she probably would have taken up gambling professionally.

“It’s enough to make you downright nostalgic for the days of ‘Rear Window,’ when spying at least required a pair of binoculars. I wonder what local laws have to say about capturing trespassing drones with a net.” — KELLY FAIRCLOTH AT JEZEBEL.COM prefers the

low-tech peeping Toms of yesteryear to the latest in comfort-of-your-own-home spies: drones. Lisa Pleiss was walking around her 26th-floor Seattle apartment naked last week when she saw a drone hovering outside her window. The drone belonged to a company surveying potential views from the building for a developer considering work on the site.

This is the first summer in D.C. for the service, which connects owners with those interested in renting their boats when they’re not in use. Most rentals cost between $200-$500 per day.
