Venison Is So Versatile! Forty-one people in Philadelphia are facing charges in what prosecutors call an elaborate insurance fraud scheme that used dead deer to fake car accidents. The body-shop owner allegedly running the scam coached customers who’d been in accidents to claim they’d struck a deer rather than another car. He stored deer carcasses, blood and fur in his shop to use as props. (AP) CONFUSION

Store Clerk Really Has No Idea How to Ring This Up A tattooed man ran into a Grants Pass, Ore., 7-Eleven on Tuesday and started dousing himself with Hawaiian Punch Slurpees. The man had suffered burns and was being chased by two others. Giant Urinal-bot Almost Complete Officials in Birmingham, Ala., say they’re investigating a series of thefts involving metal urinal components from restaurant men’s bathrooms. The stolen flush valves and supply lines weren’t made of copper and would have little value if a thief tried selling them as scrap metal, so officials are unsure why the items are being stolen. (AP)

These Schools Are Out — Forever New Orleans The second-graders paraded to the dumpster in the rear parking lot, where they chucked boxes of old worksheets, notebooks and other detritus into the trash, emptying their school for good. Benjamin Banneker Elementary closed Wednesday as New Orleans’ Recovery School District permanently shuttered its last five traditional public schools this week. With the start of the next school year, the Recovery School District will be the first in the country made up completely of public charter schools, a milestone for New Orleans and a grand experiment

in urban education for the nation. The creation of the country’s first all-charter school system under the Recovery School District — the Louisiana state agency that seized control of almost all public schools after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the city in 2005 — has improved education for many in New Orleans, but it also has amplified concerns about racial equality and loss of parental control. Critics of the all-charter New Orleans model say it is undemocratic, because leaders of charter schools are not accountable to voters. They also say the system is challenging for parents, who have to figure out logistics that were not an issue when their children walked to neighborhood schools. Advocates say the all-charter model empowers parents. “We’ve reinvented how schools run,” said Neerav Kingsland of New

At Ba nneker Elementa r y, Sharell Washington was absorbing the school closing. “I’m sad. I like this school,” said Sharell, a bright-eyed 8-year-old. “I’ve been here since kindergarten, and I know a lot about this school. I have friends here. Shinseki Resisting Pressure to Step Down Amid VA Scandal Washington Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki is facing increasing political pressure to resign following release of an independent review that has determined that Department of Veterans Affairs officials falsified records to hide the amount

Google’s Diversity Woes Tech giant trying to change its mostly white, male culture San Jose, Calif. Google has had more trouble diversifying its workforce than its computer scientists have had writing programs that respond to search requests in the blink of an eye or designing cars that can navigate traffic without a human behind the wheel. That seemed to be the conclusion when the Silicon Valley giant this week issued a gender and ethnic breakdown of its workforce that showed that of its 26,600 U.S. employees, 61 percent are white, 30 percent Asian, 3 percent Hispanic and 2 percent black. Thirty percent of its employees are women. “Google is miles from where we want to be,” said Laszlo Bock, head of personnel at Google. Why is one of the most innova-

A Persistent Problem Google is just one of many high-tech companies that are pledging to diversify their workforces under pressure from the Rev. Jesse Jackson. But the same promises were made in Silicon Valley 15 years ago. That effort included commitments from top firms, and a call to educate and employ 200,000 young people. “I’m disappointed. For the most part they have not improved,” said Jackson on Thursday. “Look at their board of directors and their c-suites. There’s a culture of exclusion.” (AP)

tive, dynamic sectors of the U.S. economy looking like the corporate world of the past, at least when it comes to blacks, Hispanics and women? The biggest factor is a shortage of such students majoring in computer science or other technical fields in college, according to Bock. “There is an absolute pipeline

problem,” he said in an interview Wednesday with “PBS Newshour.” But the educational choices of some minorities don’t entirely account for the lack of diversity at technology companies. For instance, Google sells $50 billion in advertising annually, a task that required more than 2,900 salespeople in the U.S. as of last August. Just 3 percent were black. Four percent were Hispanic. About 70 percent were white. Google attributes this phenomenon to “unconscious biases” that have historically favored white people. “We like people who are like us, who watch the same shows, who like the same food, who have the same backgrounds,” Bock told PBS. To address this issue, Google has put more than 20,000 employees through 90-minute training sessions during the past year to help them become more aware of their biases. Kiev Demonstrators: Now What? Even after election, some protesters say their work isn’t done

Behind the reefs of old tires and cobblestones that protected Ukraine’s protest movement against the nowdisbanded riot police, those still camped in the city’s Independence Square face some fundamental questions: Is their revolution over? And is it time to go home? Days after elections swept into office two politicians who stood with protesters at the barricades during protests this winter, one of those leaders, Kiev mayor-in-waiting Vitali Klitschko, has called on protesters to go home and for the city to return to normal. Now, those who toppled proKremlin President Viktor Yanukovych in February are split about their next step, debating where their movement is headed after the landslide victory of chocolate magnate Petro Poroshenko, a longtime politician who supported the protesters but is still a face many

Some of the civil society groups

that led the original protests counter that the time has come to build a memorial on the square, along with, perhaps, a forum for public debate, but otherwise to pull back and return some measure of ordinary life to central Kiev. “I’m going to stay here until the system has changed,” said Alexander Fedonyuk, 47, an out-of-work construction worker. “The courts are the same,” he said. “It’s too early

General Killed

PERTH, AUSTRALIA

In another devastating blow to Ukraine’s armed forces, rebels shot down a troop helicopter Thursday, killing at least 12 soldiers, including a general who was in charge of combat training. The loss underscored the challenge Ukrainian forces face in fighting a guerrilla-style insurgency that has proven to be an agile foe. The Mi-8 helicopter was downed on the outskirts of Slovyansk by rebels using a portable air defense missile, according to Oleksandr Turchynov, Ukraine’s acting president. (AP)

Impasse in Jet Search The hunt for a missing Malaysian airliner has hit an impasse, with investigators determining Thursday that the jet is not in an area of the Indian Ocean previously deemed its most likely crash site. On Thursday, the Australian agency leading the operation said an underwater search of that zone had ended with “no signs of aircraft debris.” (THE WASHINGTON POST) VATICAN CITY

to say whether there’s a difference.” But for some protest leaders in Kiev, the activism needs to continue elsewhere in Ukrainian society, not at the makeshift checkpoints on the roads that lead into Independence Square. “The Maidan is not just about the territory. It’s a thing in life that happened to people,” said Oleksandr Melnyk, a leader of the Civic Sector of Euromaidan, one of the groups that first organized protests.

Rape, Death Of Sisters Outrages Indian Town Lucknow, India Two teenage sisters in rural India were raped and killed by attackers who hung their bodies from a mango tree, which became the scene of a silent protest by villagers angry about alleged police inaction in the case. Two of the four men arrested so far are police officers. Villagers found the girls’ bodies hanging from the tree early Wednesday, hours after they disappeared from fields near their home in Katra village in Uttar Pradesh state, police Superintendent Atul Saxena said. The girls, who were 14 and 15, had gone into the fields because there was no toilet in their home. Hundreds of angry villagers stayed next to the tree throughout Wednesday, silently protesting the police response. Indian TV footage showed the villagers sitting under the girls’ bodies as they swung in the wind, and preventing authorities from taking them down until the suspects were arrested. The v illagers accused the chief of the local police station of ignoring a report by the girls’ father Tuesday night that the girls were missing. The station chief in Katra has since been suspended. Shoe Switcheroo Ever since nearly losing a flip-flop battle in the McPherson Square station several years ago, I’ve been nervous about repeating the experience. There’s an obvious solution to this problem: Don’t wear f lip-f lops. The Washington Post recently ran a treatise on why the beach-style shoes are a terrible choice for the workplace. And Metro often reminds riders that they’re just as poorly suited to Gallery Place. But if I’m going to forsake my favorite footwear, I need to know what to put on instead. So I turned to specialists for answers. (Or, to quote the female stereotype depicted in those irritating Metro

Forward ads: “Can’t we just talk about shoes?”) Deciding what to wear to get around D.C. can be a critical health decision, says podiatrist Howard Osterman. Last year, he saw a patient with stress fractures in two metatarsals. The cause? Strolling around the National Zoo in flip-flops. with sandals that cover only the front of the foot (that’s flip-flops, as well as clogs and slides) is that your toes need to grip to keep the shoe on. That action can lead to fatigue, fractures and plantar fasciitis. An enclosed heel or ankle strap, even on an open-toed shoe, solves that problem. But if you’re not fully covered, there are other concerns, adds podiatrist Stephen Pribut. “You don’t want to trip and have your toes bloodied,” Pribut points out. And if you want to be prepared to use Capital Bikeshare, opt to wear something that’s stiff on the bottom, he says. In super-squishy shoes, feet have to work overtime to press the pedals. One option that’ll take me places, Osterman suggests, is Toms. Both docs say the best choice is tennis shoes — ideally with moisture-wicking socks that’ll reduce friction and blisters. Bonus: They come in handy when the escalator’s broken.

St. Mary’s County, Md. Lauren A. Bush, 17, the older of two girls accused of repeatedly assaulting a 16-year-old autistic boy, pleaded guilty Thursday in St. Mary’s County juvenile court to two misdemeanor charges, a surprising setback for prosecutors who wanted her tried in adult court, where she could have faced as much as 80 years in prison. St. Mary’s Judge Michael Stamm

will formally sentence Bush next week, but at most she would serve four years in a secure juvenile detention center in Maryland or outside the state. Bush pleaded guilty to secondBush degree assault and distribution of an obscene video. The plea deal marked a defeat for law enforcement authorities. Earlier Thursday in St. Mary’s County Circuit Court, prosecutor John Pleisse tried to persuade a judge that Bush’s case should

remain in adult court, where she could have been tried on two firstdegree assault charges that carry 25-year sentences each. But St. Mary’s County Circuit Court Judge David Densford ruled that even though Bush’s conduct was “chilling,” she did not deserve to be sent to an adult women’s prison. He said a secure juvenile facility would instead ensure her rehabilitation and safety for the community. The other girl in the case, a 15-year-old whom the boy considered his girlfriend, was sentenced in April to a maximum of six years in a state juvenile detention facility. The girls’ arrest in March and

details about their alleged crimes — which included coercing the boy onto a frozen pond, which he crashed through — prompted much outrage online. Prosecutors obtained cellphone footage of the girls’ behavior, which also included filming him while encouraging him to have sex with his family’s dog. The case has been especially fraught because the boy, who is highly functioning, his parents say, has said that he still considers the girls his friends and wants them released. Now, according to his mother, the boy has said he’s “over” the girls and wants to move on. IAN SHAPIR A (THE WASHINGTON POST )

D.C. Tax Cuts: What Do They Mean for You?

POST BLOG | CAPITAL WEATHER GANG

Summer Forecast: Hot, but Not Brutal Washington To some, it may feel like winter just ended. But meteorological summer — June 1 — arrives Sunday, and it won’t be long until an onslaught of complaints about the haze, the heat and the humidity. So, how bad is it going to be? Quite simply, we expect the coming summer to closely resemble last summer. That means plenty of heat and humidity, as that is simply unavoidable in D.C. But, when you consider the oppressively hot summers of 2010, 2011 and 2012, it will seem quite reasonable. (For the record, last summer finished 0.6 degrees warmer than normal; June and July were warmer than normal, and August was cooler than normal.) We think we’ll hit 90 slightly more than last summer, when we had 23 90-degree days (June through August), but that should be offset by some relatively “cool-

If we can survive some of those oppressive mid-summer days (they always happen), we think there is a shot we could be rewarded with quite a nice August — perhaps even our coolest in 10 years. MAT T ROSS (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Get Out the Popsicles We expect that this summer will finish with temperatures around normal, leaning slightly above normal June: 1 to 2 degrees above average July: 1 degree above average August: 1 to 2 degrees below average Number of 90-degree days for June-August: 30-35 (Normal is 31)

The District is on the verge of its first major income-tax overhaul in 15 years after winning initial council approval Wednesday. For details on the cuts, visit washingtonpost.com. But here’s the gist: If you make less than $60,000 a year, you will see a little more in your paycheck beginning in January. For those who make more, it will take longer to see the benefit during the five-year phase-in. (Think of it as a yearly bonus of $500 to $700 coming your way circa 2017.) But until then, many D.C. residents will actually see a subtle tax increase. In 2015, the city will tack its 5.75-percent sales tax onto six service industries previously exempt, such as healthclub memberships, storage lockers and delivery of bottled water. A ARON C. Faneca, who played at 315 pounds, bought an outdoor elliptical bike and stopped lifting weights for more than 18 months after retiring. Three months after his final game in 2010, the ex-Steeler had lost 70 pounds. Now 37, he weighs about 215 pounds and has run a marathon in 3 hours, 56 minutes.

‘The Refrigerator’ In 1985, a rookie defensive tackle captivated America. The Chicago Bears’ William “The Refrigerator” Perry, a 335-pound defensive tackle, could stuff ballcarriers and play fullback, too, and that year he was one of two 300-pound players to enter the league. The Bears won that year’s Super Bowl and became icons with the “Super Bowl Shuffle,” and Perry became the gap-toothed face of a league that, in many ways, was growing. The next year, nine 300-pound players — most of them interior offensive linemen, built to stop a defender like Perry — entered the league, and a year after that came

The league and players’ association host wellness seminars and offer help to players transitioning to retirement. Dwight Hollier, a former linebacker who works with former players in the NFL league office, said an all-day “Transition to Fitness” program was held in October in Atlanta. Invitations went out to hundreds of former players — anyone, Hollier said, who had applied for severance pay — and promised to teach them about healthy cooking and manageable exercise. The event was free. Including spouses, Hollier said, fewer than 30 people attended. “We are working very, very hard to educate players on wellness,” Hollier says. “It is ultimately the players’ … ” He stops himself. “We are working very hard,” he says again, “to educate players on wellness.” KENT BABB (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Roger Brown, who started his NFL career in the 1960s, was the league’s first regular player to weigh 300 pounds.

Antone Davis Davis grew to nearly 450 pounds after he retired with the Atlanta Falcons. At 447 pounds, he appeared in 2011 on the reality TV show “The Biggest Loser,” where he said he finally learned how to eat and exercise for this stage of his life. Davis lost 202 pounds — although he admits he has regained about 50.

Roger Brown had to go to the train station back then, standing where they weighed logs and iron. The Detroit Lions’ scale didn’t reach such ungodly measures. Weigh-in day came each Thursday, and most weeks this was nerve-racking and humiliating. In the early 1960s, Brown’s target weight as a defensive tackle was 280 pounds; for each extra pound he was fined $10. The team’s scale stopped at 250, and so away they went. He would stand there amid the other freight while they waited to see that week’s number, which sometimes registered 300 or more. “Today,” Brown, 77, says, “fans look at [300-pounders] as this big, healthy [butt] kicker. Back then, you were just an overweight blob.” In the early 1960s, Brown was the biggest man in football — and, as the NFL’s first regular player to weigh 300 pounds, something of an oddity. These days, there’s nothing unusual about a player that size. Three weeks ago, when 256 players entered the league via the NFL draft, 57 were listed at weights of at least 300 pounds. But what happens when the games end and a man no longer needs to be so big to earn his living? Some former players channel their competitive drives into new activities, but others keep expanding. “Today, I look at the guys,” Brown says, “and, whew, they’re in trouble.” Brown’s career ended in 1969, and he eventually ballooned to 448 pounds. With Ian Desmond at shortstop and Adam LaRoche at first base, the lone two options for the remainder of 2014 appear to be third base or left field — at least for as long as Bryce Harper remains out with his own thumb injury. Here are the arguments for Zimmerman at either position:

better option for the Nats. Anthony Rendon has a modest .957 fielding percentage on the hot corner, and second baseman Danny Espinosa is in the midst of a hitting slump. Utility man Kevin Frandsen, batting .239, is not adding much at the plate. Zimmerman took some grounders on Wednesday at first base and was expected to receive work at third on Thursday. “Zim looks like Zim; he looked good,” Rendon said. “Obviously he will be a good addition whenever he gets back.”

Left field Zimmerman, 29, is athletic enough to make the transition to the outfield. The move could also help his shoulder down the road.

At third, Zimmerman has to rely mostly on arm strength to fire a ball to first base. In the outfield, a running start is used for

most throws, which would take some strain off of Zimmerman’s shoulder. With LaRoche hitting well, the possibility of his 2015 mutual option being picked up has increased, which could hurt Denard Span’s chances of being brought back. If so, Harper could move to center with Zimmerman playing left field for seasons to come. A head start now would make sense if this is the way the club is leaning. “I feel comfortable wherever it makes sense for me to help the team win,” Zimmerman said. “I think anybody in this clubhouse would do that. I’m not sure if I could pitch or catch, but I feel like I could play anywhere else on the baseball field and not look out of place.” JASON BUT T (FOR E XPRESS)

Corrie Allen never bought enough food to fill the sizeable pantry in her one-bedroom Petworth apartment. So she came up with another use for all of that space. “I moved the food to one of the cupboards over the counter and converted the pantry to a craft closet,” says Allen, 38, who likes to sew and to work with beads and paper. Now it holds fabric and other supplies she previously had to stash under the couch or in her bedroom closet. “It’s made it so much easier for me,” she says. “Everything’s in one place.” Space is often at a premium in D.C.-area rentals. So for folks like Allen who partake in hobbies that require both storage and room to work, it can be a challenge to indulge their pastime passions. But there’s no need to get rid of the glue gun or power drill — renters can find plenty of ways to pursue their preferred diversions, both in their own homes and outside of them. The first step is to get organized. “Categorizing and prioritizing your materials is pretty important,” says Heather Bouley, director of SCRAP DC (3101 12th St. NE; 202-827-4547, scrapdc.org), a thrift store of sorts for creative types. It’s run by a nonprofit focused on creative reuse and sustainability. “Remove the things you don’t need,” Bouley also advises. You could even remove gear that’s not required every day, which

Corrie Allen, 38, opted for a chic, compact Parsons table to stage her sewing machine in the living room of her one-bedroom Petworth apartment.

For Some Renters in D.C., Home Is Where the Art Is For renters concerned with finding a spot for their easel or piano, there are some apartment complexes in the D.C. area where room for artistic pursuits is among the amenities. Artspace’s Brookland Artspace Lofts (202-5261509, bit.ly/1o9Nr39) and Mount Rainer Artist Lofts (301-927-3586, bit.ly/RXb8Oh) offer affordable, livework units that can be rented by everyone from musicians and sculptors to designers and tattoo artists, some of whom make their living from their work and others for whom it’s still more of a hobby. (You don’t have to be an artist to rent there, but preference is given to artists.) They’ve proven so popular that they’re fully occupied and have long waiting lists. Apartments are still available at Monroe Street Market in Brookland (866-339-1487, monroestreet market.com), a multi-building community with more than 560 apartments and 27 artist studios for rent, along with a variety of retail tenants. Among the amenities for residents is a free “arts lounge,” where renters can work on projects that might be too unwieldy for their apartments. “We’ve found that a lot of local artists didn’t have a lot of space to work and never had the opportunity to entertain in their apartment, because their dining room was basically their work station,” says David Raley, general manager of Monroe Street Market. “[The arts lounge] offers a separate space where our residents can work on a project or work collectively with other residents and artists.” B.L.

“If you get creative, you can have space for yourself by using folding tables or things that attach to the wall.” — A LLI SON LINCE- BENTLE Y, OWNER OF BITS OF THREAD IN ADAMS MORGAN, A SEWING STUDIO THAT RENTS SPACE

If you just can’t find room in your pad, you can rent a workroom or studio space. (Ask a fellow crafter where he or she works or do a little creative Googling to find options near you.) At Bits of Thread, for example, it costs just $7 an hour to rent the workroom. Elsewhere, renting long-term studio spaces — which often have lengthy waitlists — will run you several hundred dollars a month (or more). You can bring that cost down by sharing the space, but it’s still a significant investment. “I don’t go out to eat a lot. If I want to go do something, I can go to my studio,” says 28-year-old painter and performance artist Jane Claire Remick, who rents a room in a Columbia Heights group house and has rented a shared space at 52 O Street Studios (52 O St. NW; 52ostreet.com) for several years. For her, it’s worth it. “I’ve always been willing to make compromises,” she says. In the end, figuring out where to paint or woodwork or crochet is a lot like the creative process itself. “You just have to improvise,” says Allen. BETH LUBERECKI (FOR E XPRES S)

Looking to change rentals soon but determined to stay within your budget? Local Realtor Nancy Simmons Starrs offers up factors that will affect the rent prices. Location & Amenities: Do you want to live in the center of the city? If yes, then consider items you might be flexible on for a better price in the location you desire. Think about smaller square footage, an older, unrenovated property and giving up amenities that are in higher-priced buildings. If amenities, larger square footage, a swimming pool and newer or renovated options are higher on your list of priorities, consider living farther away from the center of the city or in Virginia or Maryland.

WHERE WE LIVE

Utilities: If you can live with laundry in the building instead of a washer and dryer in the unit, this can cut utility costs. Many properties that have laundry in the building, versus in-unit washers and dryers, may include some utilities, and sometimes all of them. Saving $25 to $150 monthly adds up. Parking: If you need a parking space, it will cost less farther from the center of D.C. Downtown garage parking averages $200 to $250 monthly. Living farther out can save you about $100 monthly on average. Commuting: How do you commute to work and what does it cost each day? If moving 10 to 12 Metro stops away from work or a farther driving distance from work saves you $100 in rent, you might want to look at the increase in commuting costs to make sure that savings in rent makes sense. If you don’t need the Metro, living farther from it can save you rent. Lifestyle: If no dishwasher means spending more money eating out because you can’t face the dishes, that won’t work. Will not having a washer and dryer in-unit mean you shell out more on dry cleaning? Paying someone else to do your laundry is likely to negate the savings. Be sure to pick a rental based on you — and your lifestyle. (TWP) Excerpted from The Washington Post’s Where We Live blog. Read the complete story at wapo.st/1ngi5Ut.

Last Chance for Jackson MICHAEL CONROY (AP)

Reinstated safety is back with Redskins after third NFL ban

Pacers guard Lance Stephenson joins a Heat huddle in Game 5 on Wednesday.

Redskins

Meanwhile … Wide receiver DeSean Jackson tweaked his hamstring on a long pass route Thursday during practice. Jay Gruden called it a “minor pull.” “We’ll take the necessary precautions and make sure he’s right,” the coach said. “He’s no good to us unless he’s running very fast.” (AP)

AP FILE PHOTO

During his third NFL drugs-related suspension, Tanard Jackson found himself working in a warehouse to support his family — and harboring legitimate doubts as to whether he would play football again. The Redskins have given him another chance — likely his last — to get his act straight. Reinstated this month, he was on the field this week for the team’s first full set of offseason practices with rookies and veterans together. He says this time will be different. Asked why, his answer was an obvious one: During his 20 months away, he had to get a real job. “That long wait,” Jackson said. “That time period I was out from doing something that I love to do, and not having that camaraderie with the teammates, and having to go out and work in the warehouse from 9 to 5. It was a hum-

support from the NFL saying there was a chance, that gave me hope.” Jackson worked behind projected starting safeties Ryan Clark and Brandon Meriweather this week. While Jackson was talking to reporters, Clark put his arm around Jackson’s neck and said: “We’re going to get him right. He’s going to get us right.” JOSEPH WHITE (AP)

Redskins safety Tanard Jackson hasn’t played an NFL game since 2011.

bling experience.” Jackson, 28, was suspended indefinitely without pay for violating the league’s substance abuse policy in August 2012, only a few months after signing with the Redskins. He previously had been suspended twice while playing for the

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: four games in 2009 and for 12 months starting in September 2010. “Those negative thoughts creep into your mind when you’ve been out of football for that long,” he said. “It wasn’t my first time. But with support from my family and

Nadal Mulls the Future of Tennis

NBA

Clippers Near Sale? Ex-Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer won a bidding war for ownership of the L.A. Clippers with a $2 billion offer, the Los Angeles Times reports. As of Express’ deadline Thursday, however, ESPN was reporting that negotiations were still ongoing. The price tag would be the second-highest for a North American sports franchise. (EXPRESS)

Shortly after winning for the 61st time in his 62nd match on the red clay at Roland Garros, Rafael Nadal took a moment to look at the future of tennis. And the top-seeded Spaniard doesn’t see himself in the picture. Or Roger Federer. Or Novak Djokovic. Or Andy Murray. True, Nadal advanced to the third round of the French Open on Thursday, beating a 20-yearold Austrian in straight sets. But it’s that same 20-year-old Austrian, Dominic Thiem, who is one of the men who could start winning the major titles that have been so elusive to almost everyone outside

that famous quartet. Together, they have won 34 of the last 36 Grand Slam titles. But, to drive home his point, Nadal notes he’s almost 28 while

Djokovic and Murray are 27 and Federer is “I don’t know, 32.” “[We’re] not going to be here for 10 more years,” he said. The eight-time French Open champion followed that last statement with a chuckle, probably because he quickly realized how ridiculous that kind of prognostication sounds after his 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 win over Thiem. “He has very powerful shots,” said Nadal, who can become the first man in history to win five straight French Open titles with another victory this year. “Very powerful forehand and good backhand, too.” Good, for sure, but not yet good enough to take down Nadal. CHRIS LEHOURITES (AP)

Heat Focus On Closing Out Pacers NBA By now, Lance Stephenson’s list of egregious acts from Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals are wellknown: He blew air into LeBron James’ ear, interrupted a Miami Heat huddle and got caught flopping for the second time. 8:30 P.M. Friday | ESPN

And on Thursday, the Heat tried to get their focus back on themselves. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra almost never holds a practice the day after a road game, especially when the team plane lands around 3:30 a.m. as was the case in the wee hours of Thursday. But Spoelstra deviated from the norm on the day before Game 6 of this East title series, not for any one on-court issue but rather so the two-time defending NBA champions could relieve some frustration. “Clear heads ... and to connect,” Spoelstra said. “We didn’t want to leave it all to tomorrow. There were some things we wanted to go over, and for time’s sake, splitting it up was a little bit more efficient.” The Heat still lead the series 3-2, and get the chance to close the Pacers out for the third straight year on Friday night. The game is in Miami, where the Heat have won their last 10 playoff contests. TIM REYNOLDS (AP)

On Saturday, Sporting Kansas City will be without star midfielder Graham Zusi, who is playing with the U.S. national team.

Tough Time for Champs A hurt and depleted Sporting KC squad to meet D.C. United MLS Normally, a matchup against the defending MLS champion would be a formidable challenge, but D.C. United can consider itself lucky this weekend when it faces a depleted and tired Sporting Kansas City side. Because of injuries and international duties, Sporting KC will bring far less than a full-strength roster to RFK Stadium on Saturday. Star duo Matt Besler and Graham Zusi are away with the U.S. national team, while versatile midfielder Lawrence Olum is with Kenya. Additionally, normal starters Chance Myers, C.J. Sapong and Uri Rosell are among several injury absences. So it’s no surprise that Sporting KC has gone four games without a win, including a 1-1 draw

United’s Group Set The CONCACAF Champions League draw was Wednesday. D.C. United was placed into a group with Panamanian side Tauro FC and Jamaican team Waterhouse FC. United earned its spot by winning the U.S. Open Cup last season and will have to finish first in the group to advance. Games are expected to begin in August. (S.V.)

against New York on Wednesday. Conversely, D.C. United is relatively healthy and rested. Chris Pontius is the only long-term injury concern, with Sean Franklin expected back any day from a foot injury. United is also coming off a full week’s rest — unlike their opponent. United received an additional boost Wednesday, as Eddie Johnson’s red card from Saturday’s loss at New England was rescinded by the league after review, meaning

7 P.M. Saturday | CSN

he will be available for selection against Sporting KC. Johnson still only has one goal on the season, but the scoring slack has been picked up by a host of players, including Fabian Espindola, who is rapidly turning into an All-Star candidate. Espindola scored a goal off the bench against New England last weekend, bringing his total for the season to six — in addition to his five assists. Only five MLS players have scored more goals than Espindola, and only one has more assists. The Argentine’s career highs in goals and assists are 10 and seven, respectively, meaning he’s easily on pace to have the best statistical season of his eight-year MLS career. SETH VERTELNEY (FOR E XPRESS)

Last Draft Pick Signs: The Redskins signed their third-round pick, offensive tackle Morgan Moses, on Thursday. Washington now has all eight of its draft selections under contract. Moses, the 66th pick of the draft, signed a deal worth roughly $3.05 million over four years — with a signing bonus of around $690,832. Moses, who played for the University of Virginia, will compete with sixth-year veteran Tyler Polumbus for the starting right tackle position. ( THE WASHINGTON POST )

Angelina Jolie is unable to summon the powers necessary to rescue “Maleficent.”

Pamela Flores and Brontis Jodorowsky star in “The Dance of Reality.”

‘The Dance of Reality’ After an absence of more than two decades, auteur Alejandro Jodorowsky is back and as bizarre as ever. It’s a surreal autobiography that blends fantastical characters, Chilean politics, religious insights and the painful reality of adolescence. You might call it a coming-of-age epic fairy tale nightmare. But in the hands of Jodorowsky, it all somehow works. The writer-director narrates the story of his childhood and pops up now and again to hang around the child version of himself. Jodorowsky is a calming presence in a swirl of fantasy, as if he’s trying to assure the younger Alejandro that despite all of the chaos, everything is going to turn out OK. The filmmaker’s novel approach to memoir deserves a wider audience. STEPHANIE MERRY (TWP)

‘Documented’ (UNRATED, 89 MINUTES)

Jose Antonio Vargas’ excellent new film relates the process of his “coming out” as an undocumented American, as he puts it. Vargas, a journalist who worked at The Washington Post from 2004 to 2009, revealed in a widely read New York Times magazine article how he came to this country illegally from the Philippines at the age of 12. “I’m in this to have some sort of impact,” he says, with conviction. Even though we know that it’s designed to wrench at our heartstrings, the film has surprising — even overwhelming — power to move. Whether it also changes minds or legislation, for that matter, is another question entirely. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

FRANK CONNOR (DISNEY)

(UNRATED, 129 MINUTES)

The Only Good Thing I have this really cool necklace. It’s an antique pillbox with a sheaf of wheat carved into the top and a big, chunky chain. It weighs about 6 pounds, but I don’t care — it’s a oneof-a-kind piece I found on Etsy, and the wheat in particular is special. My dad, a native Kansan, requested that we scatter his ashes in a Kansas wheat field, which we did. I love this necklace, is what I’m saying. When I interviewed Angelina Jolie in 2011, for “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” her directorial debut, she complimented me on that necklace. And my first instinct was to take it off and hand it over. (I didn’t. Instead I now refer to it as my “Angelina Jolie necklace.”) Jolie is a fine actress, but more than that, she is a movie star. She is freakishly magnetic, both in a hotel inter-

view suite and on screen. Which means she’s great in the retconorama that is Disney’s “Maleficent.” But the rest of the movie is a mess. Jolie savagely glides through the film with a dominating presence and cheekbones that are chef’sknife sharp. She blends her character’s cruelty — Maleficent is the bad fairy from Disney’s 1959 animated film “Sleeping Beauty” — with humor and a touch of pathos that makes her a pleasure to watch. Everyone else, though, seems to be in an entirely different movie. While Jolie embraces the element of fairy-tale camp present in all classic Disney animated films, everyone else in “Maleficent” kind of has no idea what they’re doing or why they’re doing it. No one else’s motivation is clear; even though

Maleficent’s is weak (a boy dumped her, so better turn evil!), at least it exists. Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) is a simpering fool who is more interesting asleep than awake; Prince Phillip (Brenton Thwaites) is a milquetoast bag of generic; King Stefan (Sharlto Copley) has nothing going for him but a Scottish accent that will certainly float some boats. Jolie is perfectly capable of carrying a not-great film — her Oscarwinning turn in “Girl, Interrupted” proved that — but there’s a limit to how much weight she can handle before it crushes her. She is a pleasure to watch in “Maleficent,” particularly because she shows a mastery of comedic timing I’m not sure we’ve seen before, but even her immense magnetism can’t save this kingdom.

‘Maleficent’ (PG) Director: Robert Stromberg Stars: Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning and Brenton Thwaites Quick Take: Jolie’s star wattage blunts the effectiveness of the narrative if we can never quite believe Maleficent is bad. That’s because we know she’s essentially good, and she seems to know that we know it; You can see it in the upturned wrinkle of her mouth. And frankly, the other characters are simply not that interesting — especially Fanning’s Aurora. The best scenes Aurora has, in fact, are when she’s a toddler, played by none other than 5-year-old Vivienne Jolie-Pitt. As the minutes tick by, you might even start feeling a bit like Sleeping Beauty herself comes to feel: drowsy. JOCELYN NOVECK (AP)

‘A Million Ways’ goes big on crudeness, but it doesn’t pay off Film Review The broad, wildly hit-or-miss Western satire “A Million Ways to Die in the West” not only taxes Charlize Theron’s willingness to crack wise about her lady parts, but demonstrates that she can do so without cracking up on camera. The new movie, out Friday, — in which Seth MacFarlane (who also directed, produced and co-wrote the film) plays Albert, a sheep farmer, with Theron as his romantic mentor and Liam Neeson his gunslinging nemesis — is passably funny, assuming you have the stomach for jokes about diarrhea, sex, death and all manner of body parts (both human and sheep). Judging by the rapid-fire humor in the red-band trailer, this is an effective combination. MacFarlane’s poor acting is glaring when you compare his performance with those of his co-stars. Theron is fully invested in the role of Anna, a woman who pretends to be Albert’s girlfriend so that he can make his ex-squeeze, Louise (Amanda Seyfried), jealous. Neil Patrick Harris also fully inhabits

Charlize Theron plays a good sport to Seth MacFarlane’s crude antics.

‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’ (R) Director: Seth MacFarlane Stars: MacFarlane, Charlize Theron and Neil Patrick Harris In a Nutshell: A sheep farmer faces off with a gunslinger in hopes of winning the hand of the mysterious newcomer to their small town.

the role of Louise’s extravagantly mustachioed and egotistical lover, Foy. Though shallowly written, both parts are grounded in reality. The real problem with “A Million Ways to Die in the West,” though, is its editing. There are a million jokes in it, but only 500,000 of them are funny. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Manolo says at long last, the summer has officially begun! Let the suffering begin! It is not the secret that the summers in the District of the Columbia can be unpleasant. The heat is oppressive, the humidity drenching, and the mosquitoes as pestiferous as the swarm of congressmen asking for the campaign contributions.

Thus, every day in the hottest part of the year the Manolo gives thanks to the peoples who invented the air conditioning and the gin with the tonics, for without them, life in the Columbian District would be intolerable. Now, if only some smart person would build one of those electric bug-zappers in the extra-strength congressional size, and then install several at the key places around the city (such as the Capitol Hill Club and Archibald’s on K Street), then, truly, Washington would be as the Garden of Eden. In the meantime, the best way of surviving the climatic awfulness of summer in the DC is to put on the cool cotton clothing and the white happy shoes and stride out into the wilting world with the attitude of good cheer. Here, from the always reliable Jack Rogers, comes the classic wedge sandal in white, the Luccia, the perfectly cool, summery shoe for those days when you must brave the worst. Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
