Man Just Wanted Everyone To Carbo-Load Before Holiday Authorities say a man stole a New York City bakery truck and began delivering loaves of bread to random businesses. Police say David Bastar hopped into a Grimaldi’s Home of Bread truck on Manhattan’s Upper East Side early Monday while the real driver was making a delivery at a pizzeria. Wearing only his underwear, Bastar then allegedly began dropping off baguettes, whole-wheat rolls and sourdough bread. (AP) CLUES

Found, 10 Years After Abduction Santa Ana, Calif. A California woman who says she was kidnapped a decade ago by her mother’s boyfriend lived a seemingly ordinary life with her alleged captor year after year but was too scared to go to authorities Garcia until she recently reunited with her mother, police said Thursday. The woman, who disappeared when she was 15, eventually married the man and started a family with him. Neighbors said she worked for a nearby janitorial service, took Zumba classes and went on trips to the beach and Disneyland.

Thursday: Garcia is charged with five felonies including kidnapping, rape. SOURCES: SANTA ANA POLICE; ORANGE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE; BELL GARDENS POLICE

Orange County prosecutors on Thursday filed five felony charges against the accused abductor, Isidro Garcia, including rape and kidnapping to commit a sexual offense. He was jailed on $1 million bail. Garcia’s attorney said the woman’s claims of physical and sexu-

al abuse are lies made up because the couple is separating. Neighbors described an outwardly happy family. “He treats her like a queen,” neighbor Maria Sanchez said. The case began to emerge Monday, when the woman went two blocks from her apartment com-

plex to the police department in working-class Bell Gardens, Calif., and accused Garcia of domestic violence. During that conversation, officers learned of her connection to a 2004 missing-persons case in Santa Ana, about 20 miles away. Santa Ana police interviewed Garcia and the woman and concluded that the husband had been sexually abusing her a decade ago and kidnapped her after a fight with her mother, his girlfriend at the time. After the kidnapping, Garcia moved at least four times and gave her multiple fake identities to hide her from family and authorities, Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said. The woman, whom police did not identify, told investigators she often thought about escaping but fear paralyzed her. She came to the United States illegally in 2004 and said Garcia used that to isolate her. GILLIAN FLACCUS AND TAMI ABDOLLAH (AP)

Forecasters Predict Slow Hurricane Season A slower-than-usual hurricane season is expected this year because of an expected El Nino, federal forecasters said Thursday. House Passes Curbs On NSA Surveillance

House Rebuffs Pentagon On Defense Spending

Boehner: ‘Closer’ to Asking VA Secretary to Step Down

The House passed legislation to end the National Security Agency’s bulk collection of American phone records. Many of the Republicans and Democrats who voted for the USA Freedom Act wanted tougher provisions: Dropped from the bill was a requirement for an independent public advocate on the secret intelligence court that oversees the NSA. The act doesn’t ask phone companies to hold records for any longer than they already do and would give the NSA the authority to request certain records in terror probes. It now heads to the Senate.

The House defied the Pentagon, backing a $601 billion defense authorization bill that saves the Cold War-era U-2 spy plane, military bases and Navy cruisers despite warnings it will undercut military readiness. A White House veto threat had little impact in an election year as lawmakers embraced the bill and its 1.8 percent pay raise for troops.

Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki said he intends to remain on the job to address allegations of mismanagement and delayed care for military veterans, adding that he has not offered his resignation to President Barack Obama. Shinseki has faced increasing calls for him to step down this week amid allegations that VA officials improperly delayed scheduling appointments for some veterans. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said Thursday that he’s “getting a little closer” to calling for Shinseki’s resignation.

The bill would allow gamblers in Las Vegas to put money down on political candidates, just like they do on sports teams. Critics of the bill argue that the bets might be used to influence or throw elections. Oh, and Hillary Rodham Clinton is 6 to 4. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

California has new rules that govern the testing of self-driving cars on public roads. Jos, Nigeria The terrorists who blew up a busy market in the central Nigerian city of Jos on Tuesday, killing at least 118 people, may have been hoping that the attack would reignite a historic tinderbox of religious and tribal enmity that has been easily goaded to violence in the past. Instead, the twin car bombs, which left body parts strewn along two city blocks, seemed to have had the opposite effect on the horrified inhabitants of this rural state capital, at least for now. Silver Where? Getting silver isn’t usually all that exciting. Just ask Olympic medal-winning gymnast McKayla “Not Impressed” Maroney. But the news that Metro will finally be taking control of the Silver Line from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority on Tuesday is worth doing several round-off back handsprings over. That’ll mark 90 days — or less — until service begins on phase one of the long-awaited project. Hopes are sky-high for the Metro system’s first new line in more than two decades: It’s expected to be the catalyst for transforming traffic-y Tysons Corner, Va., into a walker’s wonderland. And, eventually, it’s supposed to make flying out of Dulles not seem like a cruel joke. Metro’s been striving to keep the public abreast of the developments with outreach events at stations and

a new weekly email newsletter, The Silver Bulletin (which you can read at silverlinemetro.com). So how much do riders really understand about the Silver Line? I decided to hang out at a few stations this week and ask them. The good news for Metro is that my woman-on-the-street interviews wouldn’t make for a particularly hilarious “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” sketch. Most folks had at least the basic facts down, even if they had no intention of ever tak-

ing the Silver Line. When I asked where this initial portion of the line runs to, Justin Ticzon, 25, hesitated a second. But the Eastern Market resident totally earns a passing grade for his answer: “Maybe Tysons Corner?” (For full credit, I was looking for Tysons and Reston.) Then there were people who appeared to have an encyclopedic knowledge of the project. Bruce Alcan, 73, of Fort Totten, rattled off details from several controversies in the Silver Line’s history. And Victoria Stone, 40, knew about every single project delay. She launched into a sob story about a friend who purchased a house right by the future Silver Line 10 years ago. The pal had been renting the house out but moved in four months ago, figuring Metro service was right around the corner. Ever since, she’s been driving more than an hour each way every day to her job in D.C. When it comes to the Silver Line launch, “she doesn’t think it’s ever going to happen,” said Stone, who lives in Merrifield, Va. That’s a negative point of view, but more accurate than the impression you might have if you looked at the newly updated maps being plastered throughout the system. “I saw that it’s open,” 33-yearold Derrick Rende told me when I asked about the Silver Line status. “It’s no longer dashed on the map.” Since Rende lives in Herndon, Va., not far from the Silver Line, he would have made plans to take it ASAP if I hadn’t broken the news to him that he has another few months to go. His reaction to that? A little bit like Maroney’s probably would have been.

Welcome the Silver Line Express: When the first phase of the Silver Line finally opens, there will be a new way to get to Washington Dulles Airport. It won’t be a stop on the Silver Line though (that will be built during the second phase). Rather, the Washington Flyer will be rebranded as the “Silver Line Express” and pick up and drop off passengers at the Wiehle-Reston East station. A one-way ride will run you $5. Report: Torrential Rains Caused Md. Landslide Rapid and heavy rains this spring triggered the landslide that forced more than two dozen families out of their homes last month, according to a report released to Fort Washington, Md., residents Wednesday. Engineers believe they can stabilize the hillside by reinforcing the land with steel and concrete, building a retaining wall and drilling steel casings filled with cement into the slope, according to the report. But it is unclear how long that could take or when the displaced residents can return to their homes. (THE WASHINGTON POST) WASHINGTON

Washington On late Friday night into Saturday morning, North America will likely see a new meteor shower called the Camelopardalids – with a good chance that these shooting stars could become a torrential meteor storm and provide quite a light show. These new meteors are dusty remnants of Comet209P/LINEAR, discovered in 2004. “The general consensus is that this week’s Camelopardalids will be comparable to a very good Perseid meteor shower with an added possibility of a storm,” says Geoff Chester at the U.S. Naval Observatory. Sky gazers may see activity Friday at about 10:30 p.m. — according to Bill Cooke of the Meteoroid Environment Office at NASA. Astronomers predict the peak will occur from 2 to 4 a.m., Eastern Day-

Thanks to Jupiter’s gravitational pull, the comet’s debris trail is intersecting Earth’s orbit for the first time.

Er, what is a meteor? Meteors occur when the Earth strikes the dusty trail from comets flown-by long ago. They contain sand-size particles and when Earth’s atmosphere meets these flecks, they light up and vaporize — creating beautiful streaks.

So … picture time? Use a wide-angle lens, set the ISO to its highest rating and set the shutter for a long exposure.

What if I blink? As meteors go, these are not in a hurry. They will be bright and travel at 12 miles per second. (TWP)

D.C. Police: 3 Women Attacked Washington A man who targets women walking alone at night and robs them after pressing a sharp object to their throats may have struck three times in a week near Eastern Market and the NoMa-Gallaudet University Metro stop, according to D.C. police. The attacks over the past six days have sparked fear in Capitol Hill and police are urging women to be vigilant. Two of the women were cut or stabbed, one seriously enough to require hospital treatment, according to police, who have posted a video of a possible suspect. D.C. Police Capt. William Fitzgerald, of the criminal investigation division, said that while detectives have not definitively linked the three cases, he said they are all similar in method and time

of occurrence. “We are coordinating the three investigations,” he said. The latest attack occurred about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday at a bus stop near Independence Avenue. A police report says the man told the 27-yearold victim to “be quiet,” demanded

her wallet and said, “Don’t do anything.” Police said he then put his arms around her neck and forced her to walk into an alley. In this case, police said the man tried to lift up the woman’s skirt, but she resisted. He then stabbed her in the neck and ran through the alley toward Ninth Street with her purse, credit cards and a single dollar bill. The extent of the woman’s injuries could not be determined. A half hour earlier, about 9:15 p.m., Fitzgerald said a woman walking near the NoMa Metro was attacked in a similar way. Police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. Anyone with information is urged to call 202-727-9099 or text 50411. Cover Story

In D.C., It’s ‘Seat Ya Later’ ‘No reservations’ trend at hot local restaurants is hard to swallow

If you think the great equalizer in D.C. is the Department of Motor Vehicles or a summons to appear for jury duty, you haven’t been out to eat lately. Thanks to a ravenous appetite for fashionable food served in teeny restaurants — and an abundance of millennial patience — the leveling agent for secretaries and Secretary of State alike boils down to this: More of us are waiting in line for dinner because restaurants aren’t taking reservations. The more adventuresome the meal, the more challenging it appears to be for a chowhound to reach it. But to the victor go the uni scrambled eggs with sea urchin hollandaise. The offbeat combination is found at Rose’s Luxury on Capitol Hill, where, on a recent spring night, would-be patrons of the modern American venue were told the next available table could be theirs — four hours hence. Eager to explore the Thai fireworks at Little Serow in Dupont Circle at prime time? Prepare to wait up to three hours on weekends for one of fewer than 30 seats. The latest game-changer, Compass Rose off booming 14th Street NW, is a cozy source for street food from around the world — a little bit of everything, it seems, except for confirmed bookings. The reality that so many worthy young restaurants are forgoing reservations (see also: Etto in Logan Circle and the ramen shop Daikaya near Verizon Center) is testament to a culture that gets as excited to see a star chef as the FLOTUS, and to a city that’s living to eat rather than eating to live.

KATHERINE FREY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Essay

Patrons line up at the hostess stand at Rose’s Luxury on Capitol Hill. Restaurants that don’t take reservations, like Rose’s, are becoming increasingly common in D.C.

Restaurateurs say they don’t take reservations because they want to avoid no-shows and latecomers, but also because they know they can pack in more diners. Indeed, the policy, which clearly favors host over guest, is creating tension and buzz. As different as the aforementioned eateries are, they all play to full houses. It also illustrates an economy that has rebounded. In lean times, a business wouldn’t dare make it difficult for you to patronize them. Beneficiaries of the no-reservations policy also include the hot spots’ neighbors, where aspiring diners go to drink or snack while they wait. Jamie Leeds, the owner of two Hank’s Oyster Bars near Little Serow and Rose’s Luxury, picks up an extra dozen or so customers a night at her seafood eateries.

On the surface, not saving tables sounds egalitarian. Whoever shows up first has a shot at getting in, regardless of clout or contacts. But hospitality takes a holiday at establishments that don’t book. In effect, these restaurants are saying, “It’s more important for us to fill every seat than to treat diners like guests.” Think about it. Who invites people to dinner and then makes them wait until the cook is good and ready to let you in, much less eat? By not guaranteeing tables, restaurants dismiss whole groups of would-be patrons. The masses include senior citizens who might not be able to stand for long, parents who may be reluctant to shell out $20 an hour for child care for a meal that may or may not happen and suburbanites reluctant to

Think about it. Who invites people to dinner and then makes them wait until the cook is good and ready to let you in, much less eat?

Worst Seat in the Place One woman was so intent on being seated at Room 11 that she decided to eat a multi-course meal in a most unlikely place — the bathroom. “We didn’t have a table to seat her at, so she went and ate her dinner on the toilet,” says Room 11 general manager Jessica Woods. “When someone had to go she’d step out, and when they were done she went back in.” (E XPRESS)

drive in for the chance to be turned away. (“Maybe that’s the point?” an acquaintance snarked.) About that defense from restaurants, that the no-reservation policy helps them avoid no-shows? The hospitality industry would be wise to adopt the practice of doctors, dentists and fitness trainers, who charge customers who fail to show for an appointment — Yelp blow-back be damned. Aff luent and over-educated Washingtonians are not used to being told no. It’s one thing for Open Table to let you know, late at night in the comfort of your paja-

mas, you can’t eat someplace on the day and time selected, quite another to be told “no” in person at a host stand. Some argue that just because you like to eat doesn’t give you entree anywhere. As a fashionista with democratic impulses told me, “You can’t get XXL in Comme des Garcons.” Some experiences, in other words, will always be out of reach. If it hasn’t happened yet, it will soon: Someone with more money than time is going to enlist the help of an assistant, concierge or Craigslist to stand in line as a human place-holder for a seat in a restaurant the public is dying to try. Fair or not — I vote not — that kind of behavior goes against the spirit of dining out, at least for me. But what goes around comes a round. W hen Er i k Br unerYang, the chef of the no-reservations Toki Underground, visited a like-minded peer, his verbal review of the production began: “I waited two hours for Rose’s.” TOM SIETSEMA (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Williams stuck by leadoff guy through early-season woes

The Nats opened a four-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park on Thursday. Washington entered the series with a 24-22 record, 1½ games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.

When he’s at his best, Denard Span is an ideal leadoff hitter. The Nationals center fielder has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to reach base, and he has the speed to steal second if asked. He’s a patient batter who works pitch counts early in games. But the 2014 season didn’t start as well as expected for Span; his batting average stood at .236 and

he held a .288 on-base percentage heading into Washington’s series opener against the Reds on Monday. But in t hose t hree games against Cincinnati, Span recorded nine hits, two doubles, four RBIs and a home run, increasing his batting average and on-base percentage to .268 and .313, respectively. “Could I put Anthony [Rendon] in the leadoff spot? Yeah. Could I put Jayson [Werth] in the leadoff spot? Yeah, I could,” manager Matt Williams said. “But I also look at the whole season and say [Span] does some things for us in the leadoff spot that are intangible that those other guys don’t do.” Against the Reds on Wednesday, Span hit his first home run of the season, in his 161st at-bat of 2014. knock his first one out of the park last year, so Span was thrilled to get that first home run of the season out of the way early. “It’s a good feeling when you look up at the scoreboard and you don’t have that goose egg anymore,” he said. While Span had some earlyseason struggles at the plate, he’s made up for it with his defense in center field. Entering this weekend’s four-game series against the Pirates, Span has never committed an error in a Nationals uniform — dating back to the beginning of last season. He’s made 87 putouts and has a range factor per game of 2.26 through the Nationals’ first 46 games in 2014.

“I see what he can do in any given way to help us win,” Williams said. “I also see the phenomenal plays he’s making in center field, like very few in this game can do. The whole package, for me, is quality, and we need him in our lineup every single day, as many times as he can play.” The Nationals need Span to keep up the hitting surge since the club has been decimated by injuries. First baseman Adam LaRoche is expected back Sunday, but third baseman Ryan Zimmerman and left fielder Bryce Harper are out indefinitely. “It’s tough because I feel we’re still playing good baseball, even with our circumstances right now,” Span said. Ian Desmond, Nats: Entering Thursday, he had three multi-hit games and two home runs in his past five contests. He leads the team with seven homers and 25 RBIs this season.

NotYour Mother’s Rentals Apartments try a custom feel with plenty of social spaces to lure millennials

JOSEPHVICTOR STEFANCHIK (FORTHEWASHINGTON POST)

Apartment Trends Given their $3,000 monthly rental payment, Lyndsay Meyer admits that she and her husband, Payam, could afford a mortgage payment. Yet the couple, their toddler son, Clayton, and two dogs are moving into a one-bedroom rental in the new PerSei apartments in North Bethesda. Their primary reason for their apartment lifestyle? Their student loans — the couple has more than $100,000 of debt, meaning they can’t afford to save for the down payment, Meyer says. They’re OK with that: “We like the ease of renting,” says the 27-year-old public relations specialist. Many millennials are opting to rent instead of buy, prompting local developers and architects to rethink the way they create living spaces with this generation’s behaviors in mind. And what exactly does that look like? At buildings that target renters in their 20s and 30s, the size of the units is shrinking, while the list of amenities tailored to them — electric-car charging stations, music studios, yoga studios, movie theaters and gardens — is growing.

Local apartment developers are creating buildings with social spaces to lure millennial renters. ABOVE: An outdoor movie theater at Archstone First and M apartments in D.C. Millennials

(Still) Ready to Rent

D.C. is leading the way in the apartment boom. Here’s a look at why millennials, especially in D.C., shy away from homeownership.

But the core principles at Ava H Street have to do with creating spaces that are social and flexible, a goal Avalon Bay developed by having consumer groups tour mock units with a psychologist.

“It’s all geared toward this generation,” said Jeff Wood, development director for Avalon Bay. “These millennials want to be socially connected. This demographic likes to customize their space.” Ava H Street tenants get walk-in closets that can be arranged multiple ways and sliding doors within units that can enable more opened or closed environments. In an outdoor courtyard, residents can control the loudspeaker music with their own iPods. One of the larger projects in the region is Pike & Rose (pike androse.com), a 24-acre property that’s part of a long-planned transit-oriented development project in White Flint, Md. The mega-complex includes a movie theater, yoga

5 Questions on DCHA’s Waitlist The D.C. Housing Authority (dchousing.org) last week launched a campaign to contact every applicant on its waitlist for lower-rent apartments and other housing assistance — more than 72,000 households — to make sure they still need housing aid. The list closed to new applicants last year, when reports said a resident seeking a one-bedroom could expect to wait 28 years for it. Express spoke with DCHA’s Christy Goodman about the campaign. What kinds of housing aid are people on this list waiting for?

The D.C. Housing Authority provides a myriad of housing assistance for a variety of individuals.

Currently, we have 20,000 families in our various programs, including the Section 8 housing choice voucher program, public housing and low-rents, as well as special

chosen to call home — have 30 floor plans, unlike the cookie-cutter units in many buildings.

Targeted Upgrades Owners of some older buildings are taking notice, and some buildings that want millennials are fast-

housing vouchers for veterans. [...] Primarily, the people on the waitlist were interested in housing vouchers or lower-rent apartments. Why did DCHA close it?

The list closed in April 2013, because we wanted to start this process to make the list more manageable — and to give our clients on the list a clearer picture of how long it will take to actually get housed. It’s about setting realistic expectations. What are you doing now?

This is the next step in the re-engineering of the waitlist. The first step was to close it to new applicants, though that does not mean we aren’t working to house the peo-

The District , with its substantial transient population, has long been a renter’s city. Its homeownership rate is well below the national average of 65.5 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Only about four in 10 households in the city are inhabited by owners — about six in 10 are occupied by renters. More young people are putting off homeownership. They don’t want to get stuck trying to sell a house if they land a job in another part of the country and many have too much student debt to get a mortgage. From 2009 to 2012, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the portion of people under 30 with more than $50,000 in student debt doubled from 5 percent to 10 percent. During that same time, the homeownership rate fell twice as much for 30-year-olds with student loans as it did for those without such debt. ( T WP)

ple that were already on the list. What we started on May 16 was a 100-day campaign to reach out to the 72,000 applicants who are still on the waitlist to make sure they still need to be on the waitlist. We’ve also contacted community groups and housing advocates, put up posters, put kiosks in a dozen different locations and created a website for applicants to log in and respond (dchousing.org/now). [...] We’re really trying hard to reach everyone. Does this mean the waitlist will open to new applicants soon?

Once we have a more accurate list, we can use it to define what our next steps will be. We are looking into changing regulations and cre-

library and movie theater. Flexible use of community space is a popular theme. Transforming an old basketball court into minigarden plots, for instance, may last longer than high-tech renovations that age quickly. Buildings that outfit their units with iPod docks, for example, might be forced to upgrade when a new version of the phone comes out. That’s a critical point, especially as technology integrates with our lives. “A lot of people are working remotely,” Avalon Bay’s Wood said of millennials. “They want a place to work by themselves and they also want … to be able to collaborate.” A DR IENNE L aFR A NCE (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST )

The first step is going online at dchousing.org/now. There are also emails being sent out, which have a link to follow to get to that website. Notices are also being mailed to the people still on the list, which have forms that can be torn off and mailed back. Or, call us at the D.C. 50 Senators Urge Name Change NFL says Redskins used to give ‘positive and respectful image’

Virginia Democrats Didn’t Sign Letter

Half the U.S. Senate urged NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday to change the Washington Redskins’ name, saying it is a racist slur and the time is ripe to replace it. In one letter, 49 senators cited the NBA’s quick action recently to ban Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life after he was heard on an audio recording making offensive comments about blacks. They said Goodell should formally push to rename the Redskins. “We urge you and the National Football League to send the same clear message as the NBA did: that racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports,” read the letter, which did not use the word “Redskins.” The letter comes at a time of

growing pressure to change the team name, with statements in recent months from President Barack Obama, lawmakers of both parties and civil rights groups. Sen. Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat, wrote his own letter saying he doesn’t believe that retaining the Redskins’ name “is appropriate in this day and age.” He described himself as “one of your great fans for both the game and you personally.”

Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has refused to change the name, citing tradition. The franchise has been known as the Redskins since 1933, when it played in Boston. In a written response, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said “diversity and inclusion” has long been a focus of the NFL. “The intent of the team’s name has always been to present a strong, positive and respectful image,” McCarthy said. “The name is not

used by the team or the NFL in any other context, though we respect those that view it differently.” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., led the letterwriting effort. All senators on the letter are Democrats. Cantwell spokesman Jared Leopold said Republicans were not asked to participate. The senators noted that tribal organizations representing more than 2 million Native Americans across the U.S. have said they want the Redskins name dropped. AL AN FR AM (AP)

Nadal Not Up to Usual Standards

SOCCER

Suarez Has Surgery Uruguay striker Luis Suarez had surgery on his left knee Thursday but is expected to recover in time for the World Cup, where, as one of the world’s top players, he is to be his team’s main threat. The arthroscopy repaired damaged cartilage. The Uruguayan soccer association said “no other injuries were found” and his participation in the World Cup is “not ruled out.” (AP)

For once, not everything seems so obvious heading into the French Open. Rafael Nadal will still be favored to win the clay-court Grand Slam tournament yet again. He is, after all, 59-1 for his career at Roland Garros, winner of a record eight championships, including the last four. Still, if the 2014 tennis season to date is any indication, there could be some surprises in store when play begins in Paris on Sunday. So far, there already was one new major champion, Stanislas Wawrinka at the Australian Open. And there has been a rather egalitarian feel to the spring clay circuit, with nine winners at nine tournaments. The three top men in the ATP

rankings — No. 1 Nadal, No. 2 Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Wawrinka — each claimed a Masters title on the slow red surface, including

Djokovic’s victory over Nadal in the Rome final last weekend. That gave Nadal three clay losses in a season for the first time since 2004, when he was all of 17 and yet to make his French Open debut. Asked about the idea of this year’s French Open being a little less predictable, Nadal replied: “I don’t care. I don’t know. I think about myself. What I have to do.” In addition to dropping a fourth consecutive head-to-head match against Djokovic, Nadal’s defeat at the Italian Open followed a series of difficult three-setters in Rome, as well as losses in the quarterfinals of Monte Carlo and Barcelona. As for Djokovic, he said: “I’m very happy with my game so far and hopefully I can carry that into Roland Garros.” HOWARD FENDRICH (AP)

Kevin Durant and the Thunder head home for Game 3 down 0-2 to the Spurs.

Thunder Cling to ’12 For Hope NBA All the Oklahoma City Thunder can do now is cling to history. Two more victories by the dominant San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference finals, and Kevin Durant and the Thunder will be just that. The Thunder stagger home down 0-2 in the series, smarting from a 35-point beat-down in San Antonio in Game 2 on Wednesday night. It’s the same deficit the Thunder faced against the Spurs in the 2012 Western Conference finals before they won four straight and advanced to the NBA Finals. “We’ve been there before,” Durant said. Back in 2012, the Thunder dropped the first two games in San Antonio by a total of 12 points. This time around, the Thunder have lost the first two games by 52 combined points and looked completely overwhelmed. Game 3 is Sunday night. JON KR AWCZ YNSKI (AP)

Donovan Among 7 U.S. Cuts World Cup American career scoring leader Landon Donovan is among seven players cut as the U.S. announced its 23-man World Cup roster. The 32-year-old attacker, bidding to make his fourth World Cup, was bypassed Thursday by U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann in favor of Aron Johannsson and Chris Wondolowski, who joined Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey as the forwards. Also cut were defenders Brad Evans, Clarence Goodson and Michael Parkhurst; midfielders Joe Corona and Maurice Edu; and forward Terrence Boyd. (AP)

MLS If it wasn’t already apparent, it became so Wednesday: Chris Rolfe and Fabian Espindola are carrying D.C. United’s offense this season. Each of them had a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win against the Houston Dynamo — a win which meant United eclipsed last season’s point total in less than a third of the games. Each goal showcased the best of what the pair have brought to United this season. Espindola picked out Rolfe with a no-look pass in the first half, and the former Fire midfielder cut past a defender before finishing low. On United’s second goal, Rolfe hit Espindola with an outrageous over-the-shoulder outlet pass which traveled 50 yards up the pitch before the Argentine beat a defender and drove a shot into the far corner. “[Rolfe] and Fabi worked pretty well together,” United coach Ben Olsen said after the match. “Rolfe

has a great ability to fill in the holes and play with guys with different attributes.” Acquired in an early-season trade, Rolfe has become one of the

team’s key offensive pieces. In just eight games with United, Rolfe has scored three goals and assisted another three. Espindola, meanwhile, has been

an even more pleasant surprise. The 29-year-old has always been a reliable MLS goal-scorer, and this year he’s also just two assists shy of equaling his single-season career high. With five goals and five assists, he’s factored into 10 of the team’s 16 goals this season. Rolfe and Espindola have been even more important with Eddie Johnson and Nick DeLeon combining for just one goal and four assists on the season, and star midfielder Chris Pontius out long-term with injury. Johnson was suspended for the Houston match, but his World Cup snub, combined with his first goal of the season in the previous match against Montreal, should give Olsen reason to believe his offense will be firing on all cylinders before too long. Until then, though, United will continue to ride the form of an unlikely pair who have the team just two points out of first place in the Eastern Conference. SETH VERTELNEY (FOR E XPRESS)

Cuban Apologizes to Trayvon Martin Family NBA Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban apologized Thursday to Trayvon Martin’s family over his choice of words in a videotaped interview in which he addressed bigotry and prejudice. Cuban even revealed some of his own prejudices in the interview with Inc. magazine, and said he believes everyone has “prejudices and bigotries” on some level. But after his words — which came with the NBA still dealing with the fallout over racist remarks made by now-banned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling — created a

stir in social media and other circles, Cuban took to Twitter to offer his apology. “In hindsight I should have used different examples,” Cuban wrote. “I didn’t consider the Trayvon Martin family, and I apologize to them for that.” Cuban also said he stands by the substance of the interview. Martin was the black Florida teen who was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in February 2012. Martin was wearing a hooded sweatshirt — commonly called a “hoodie” — that night, and that particular piece of cloth-

ing became a rallying cry for those who demanded justice. Zimmerman was eventually acquitted. “We’re all prejudiced in one way or the other,” Cuban said in the Inc. interview. “If I see a black kid in a hoodie and it’s late at night, I’m walking to the other side of the street. And if on that side of the street, there’s a guy that has tattoos all over his face — white guy, bald head, tattoos everywhere — I’m walking back to the other side of the street. And the list goes on of stereotypes that we all live up to and are fearful of.” TIM REYNOLDS (AP)

THE REELIST

X-Men Versus RFK

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY

They’re My Heroes

Why does Magneto destroy our stadium? Film

It’s so easy to be cynical about superhero movies, because they can so easily go wrong in so many ways. For every “The Avengers,” which succeeds as comic canon as a well-crafted film all on its own, there’s a “Man of Steel,” which collapses on both fronts. You’ve got “Batman Begins” on one hand and “Iron Man 2” on the other — one explores the struggle inherent in the self-sacrificing nature of heroism, the other blows stuff up a lot.

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ (PG-13) Director: Bryan Singer Stars: Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender In a Nutshell: Wolverine goes back in time to assemble the first class of X-Men and prevent a catastrophic end for both humans and mutants.

he not only wanted the film to be great, he expected that it would be. It’s a dangerous way to live, since he could have been very disappointed. Good thing he wasn’t. “Days of Future Past” is, hands down, the best X-Men movie yet and one of the best of the modern superhero movies. (I’d put it third, behind “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “The Avengers.”) I can’t help but wish I had put my 3-D glasses on with the same attitude my friend had, with a mind open to awesomeness. That attitude requires taking a chance, because you’re risking real disap-

TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

And now that we almost unwillingly see dribs and drabs of the films before they even reach trailer stage, like with the recent image of Ben Affleck as Batman gloomily looking at the floor next to his Batmobile, it’s easy to start complaining and hard to remember that “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” doesn’t come out for nearly two years and maybe we should wait until we have something more to discuss than leather-clad abs. Not that there’s anything wrong with leather-clad abs or the discussion thereof. I lost interest in the “X-Men” franchise immediately af ter “X-Men: First Class.” While I liked James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, the rest of the movie left me cold (especially January Jones as Emma Frost SEE WHAT I DID THERE?). It’s a shame, because I really did enjoy the first two X-Men films, but I wasn’t enthused about seeing “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” which opens Friday. My friend, though, was. A hardcore fan (he sported a well-worn X-Men shirt to the press screening),

X-Men mutants of past and present come together in “Days of Future Past.” Clockwise from top left, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Shawn Ashmore as Iceman, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde, Nicholas Hoult as Beast and Michael Fassbender as Magneto.

pointment, whereas someone who walks in ready for a movie to suck can only be pleasantly surprised. And while pleasant surprises are, well, pleasant, expecting success and then seeing it is a much better feeling, one that I should probably open myself up

to more often. “Days of Future Past” takes a big jump without a net. And, boy, does it fly. Read Kristen Page-Kirby’s previous columns at: washingtonpost.com/thereelist

Maybe Magneto is a Dallas Cowboys fan? D.C. United fans fell into a frenzy last week after 20th Century Fox released a clip from “X-Men: Days of Future Past” showing Magneto (Michael Fassbender) obliterating RFK Stadium. During a Tuesday appearance on “SportsCenter,” Hugh Jackman, a New York Giants fan, was asked if he’d influenced the decision to destroy the former home of the Redskins. “Pure coincidence,” Jackman said, according to The Washington Post. “That was actually a decision that was made during the filming. One of the guys came up with that idea actually. A friend of the director’s came up with that idea. So it was very cool, it’s an iconic kind of bit of the film. The action is amazing in it.” In the clip, Magneto makes a dramatic entrance on the infield, before using his magnetic powers to levitate the entire stadium, destroying the scoreboard, seats and advertisements. Benjamin Freed at Washingtonian pointed out an error in the scene: A groundskeeper painting lines on the field for a baseball diamond. But the field’s former owners, Major League Baseball’s Washington Senators, left RFK in 1971: two years before the events of “Days of Future Past.” Answer to that, Magneto. LORI McCUE (E XPRESS)

‘Blended’ combines too few moments of heart with its comedy Film Review Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions churns out some of the most idiotic comedies to land on the big screen. To wit: Last year’s “Grown Ups 2” was one of the worst movies since 2012’s “That’s My Boy,” which was at least slightly better than Razzie winner “Jack and Jill,” from 2011. Compared to its forebears, the romantic comedy “Blended” looks like “Annie Hall.” Sixteen years since Sandler starred opposite Drew Barrymore in “The Wedding Singer” and a decade since they starred together in “50 First Dates,” the pair have grown up, even if the comedy hasn’t. They play Jim and Lauren, two single parents who go on a disastrous blind date. Basically, Jim is a schlubby Mr. Darcy, antagonizing Lauren only to potentially win her over later, when the two, each with their children, coincidentally end up on the same African safari vacation for Brady Bunch-esque blended families. There are a lot of misses when it comes to the comedy, whether it’s seeing rhinos mid-coitus or

Drew Barrymore looks surprised that Adam Sandler did something crass. Shocker.

the recurring gag of Lauren carrying one of her sleeping sons to bed and slamming his head into door jambs. One of the most dependable jokes comes courtesy of Terry Crews: The “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star plays a muscled resort troubadour who shows up singing at the oddest moments, always with a huge

group of backup singers. “Blended” is more successful when it lets itself be sentimental. Jim’s youngest daughter, Lou (Alyvia Alyn Lind), provides much of the film’s most precious material, especially when, in desperate need of a mom figure, she latches onto Lauren. But the filmmakers seem terrified to dwell in sensitive territory for too long. Each sweet moment is inevitably punctuated by some joke that’s at least as stupid as the preceding moments were heartfelt. “Blended” has other problems, too, including a typically predictable finale. But there are some genuinely sweet and funny moments, which are more than enough to exceed expectations.

In this austere black-and-white character study, Anna (Agata Trzebuchowska, in an astonishing screen debut) is a young novitiate nun who travels to Gdansk, Poland, to meet her only blood relative. Wanda (Agata Kulesza) and Anna travel to their family’s former home and dredge up the mysteries of their shared past. “Ida” sends each woman on an individual journey that seems as inevitable as it is quietly shocking. Joaquin Phoenix is Marion Cotillard’s savior with suspicious motives.

Marion Cotillard, in a restrained, unshowy performance, plays Ewa, who arrives at Ellis Island in 1921 and is coerced into prostitution by a mysterious stranger, Bruno

Michael C. Hall plays Rich Dane, whose fatal shooting of an intruder in his family’s living room one night precipitates a mystery. As I have matured (I am now in my 40s) I have developed foot problems that hinder me from wearing cute shoes (and I don’t mean just heels, but cute flats as well). I am hoping you can help me find a pair of cute ballet flats that can accommodate wide feet that need a lot of support and will go well with skirts and tapered pants. —D.C. WALKER Manolo says it is the same sad story, as one grows into the age of maturity, the infirmities begin to pile up, leaving us less and less capable of doing the things that we once did so effortlessly. When you were 23, you thought nothing of stuffing your feets into the too-small, hot-pink, stilettoheeled pumps and spending hours of getting down to the boogie sounds at the disco. But now that you are older, your nights on the town are considerably less rambunctious. Certainly, you would be more than willing to cut the rug, if the rug was not so insistent on

Stylist Rachel Zoe weighs in on wearing white year-round Fashion It may require a tad more attention to detail, but with care just about anybody can wear white at just about any time of the day or year. Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe reveals her tips for wearing white whenever you want, and why not all whites are created equal. We all have a Little Black Dress, but can the Little White Dress or outfit be just as versatile?

Absolutely! I treat white the same way I treat black, unless I’m with my children. I would so much rather see a pop of white. It’s so much happier. I love it all year round.

Is it just as easy to go from day to evening in white as it is in black?

Yes, absolutely. I think it’s as easy wearing a white dress in the evening. It’s amazing. I love it with a messy top knot and a bright lip. DAN HALLMAN (AP)

How do you figure out which shade of white works best?

You choose your white based on skin tone. Optic white is much brighter and it sometimes has like a pink undertone or a blue under-

Though she doesn’t show it here, Rachel Zoe says white is her go-to color.

You have to experiment and see what works best for you. It’s always about what’s your favorite part of your body and always accentuate that part. Obviously white is much less forgiving and typically white shows more. People are scared their skin is too pale, you know, white is not good on their skin, but there IS a white for everybody. Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
