A 101-year-old D-Day veteran has become the oldest person to skydive. Bryson William Verdun Hayes completed a tandem skydive from 15,000 feet with family members Sunday at an airfield in Honiton, England. Guinness World Records said the previous oldest skydiver also was 101, but 35 days younger than Hayes. After the jump, he said he felt “absolutely over the moon.” A relative said Hayes might try wing walking next. (AP)

A passenger posted a video of the delivery man walking up to the train Sunday as it sat on the tracks. Positive messages drawn at school after noose hung

Officials believe a parked fire truck caused a blaze at a Virginia fire station. Officials believe a fire truck that was parked in the station caught fire and spread to the attic area. The flames went through the roof of the building, melted equipment and torched the truck. It took about 40 minutes to get the fire under control. The cause of the truck fire is under investigation. Protesters take stand against alt-right rally Mayor targeted after blasting torch-wielding white nationalist group CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer held onto a candle and a hope that racists cannot gain a foothold in his college town at the start of this week, one night after white nationalists evoked “the days of the KKK” with a torch-lit rally to save a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. “Candlelight vigil against hate in Cville,” Signer wrote on Twitter after Sunday’s vigil. “These are the kind of ‘torches’ I like to see.” The hopeful mood did not last long. Signer, a Jewish author and lawyer who became mayor in January 2016, soon drew a hail of racist and anti-Semitic assaults on Twitter that began Sunday and kept coming Monday. “I smell Jew,” one message said. “If so, you are going back to Israel. But you will not stay in power here. Not for long.” The attacks were only part of the fallout from a startling weekend in Charlottesville, where white nationalist Richard Spencer led two rallies Saturday. His appearances continued to reverberate Monday in the Virginia governor’s race, as the candidate who based his campaign around Confederate symbols remained

conspicuously mum. C orey Stewart, one of three Republican contenders, made the Singer preservation of the state’s Confederate memorials a rallying cry for his campaign. There is no indiStewart cation that he attended the rallies. But unlike the two other Republicans and two Democrats in the race — who all condemned Spencer’s racial appeals — Stewart did not comment as the events made national news. “Only a jerk would talk politics on Mother’s Day,” Stewart tweeted on Sunday, although earlier in the day, he tweeted

about his plans to cut taxes and create jobs. “Go be with your family. Talk tomorrow.” Ed Gillespie, one of Stewart’s GOP rivals, chided Stewart for his silence on the “ugly display of hateful rhetoric and intimidation tactics” during an unrelated conference call with reporters Monday. Signer voted against removal, saying he would prefer to add monuments to civil rights victories to tell “the full story of race through our public spaces,” he said in a written statement ahead of the vote. “I’d rather rebut them and overcome them than purge the public realm of irritants to our values,” he said in an interview Monday. POTOMAC, MD. Barron Trump, the 11-year-old son of President Trump and first lady Melania Trump, will attend the private St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac this fall after he moves from New York with his mother. Barron Trump is finishing the current school year at Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School on the Upper West Side

He will be the first presidential child to attend St. Andrew’s, a coeducational college preparatory school that was founded in 1978 and educates about 580 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The White House had planned to hold off until summer to make the announcement — in part because of concern that St. Andrew’s might become the site of protests while school was still in

Experts warn of risk of new cyberattacks TECHNOLOGY The “ransomware” cyberattack that has hit companies and governments around the world ebbed in intensity on Monday, though experts warned that new versions of the virus could emerge. Thousands more infections were reported Monday, largely in Asia, which had been closed for business when the “WannaCry” virus first struck Friday. Many of the 200,000 victims in more than 150 countries were still struggling to recover from

the first malware attack. Carmaker Renault said one of its French plants, which employs 3,500 people, didn’t reopen Monday as a “preventative step.” New variants of the rapidly replicating malware were discovered Sunday. One did not include the so-called kill switch that allowed researchers to interrupt the malware’s spread Friday. Ryan Kalember of Proofpoint Inc., which helped stop the attack, said the version without a kill switch could spread.

Emma was the top baby name for girls for the third year in a row, followed by Olivia, Ava, Sophia and Isabella. Noah was the top baby name for boys for the fourth year in a row. Trump gave intel to Russia Officials: Disclosure of classified information jeopardizes ISIS source

AN ANONYMOUS U.S. OFFICIAL,

on Trump’s disclosure last week of classified information to Russia

Trump met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, left, and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak last week.

The aftermath After President Trump disclosed highly classified information to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak at a meeting last week, senior White House officials appeared to recognize quickly that Trump had overstepped and moved to contain the potential fallout. RUSSIA REACTION: Lavrov’s reaction was muted, officials said, calling for the U.S. to work more closely with Moscow on fighting terrorism. CIA/NSA CONTACT: Thomas P. Bossert, assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, placed calls to the directors of the CIA and the National Security Agency, the services most directly involved in an intelligence-sharing arrangement with a key U.S. partner. CONTAINMENT: One of Bossert’s subordinates also called for the problematic portion of Trump’s discussion to be stricken from internal memos and for the full transcript to be limited to a small circle of recipients, efforts to prevent sensitive details from being disseminated further or leaked. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak into the Oval Office. It was during that meeting, officials said, that Trump went off script and began describing details about an ISIS terrorist threat related to the use of laptop computers on aircraft. For most people in government, discussing such matters with an adversary would be illegal. As president, Trump has broad

authority to declassify government secrets, making it unlikely that his disclosures broke the law. “The president and the foreign minister reviewed common threats from terrorist organizations to include threats to aviation,” said H.R. McMaster, the national security adviser, who participated in the meeting. “At no time were any intelligence sources or methods discussed and no military operations were

disclosed that were not already known publicly.” Officials expressed concern with Trump’s handling of sensitive information as well as his grasp of the potential consequences. Exposure of an intelligence stream that has provided critical insight into ISIS, they said, could hinder the U.S. and allies’ ability to detect future threats. “It is all kind of shocking,” said a former senior U.S. official close to current administration officials. “Trump seems to be very reckless, and doesn’t grasp the gravity of the things he’s dealing with, especially when it comes to intelligence and national security. And it’s all clouded because of this problem he has with Russia.” In his meeting with Lavrov, Trump seemed to be boasting about his inside knowledge of the looming threat. “I get great intel. I have people brief me on great intel every day,” Trump said, according to an official with knowledge of the exchange. Trump went on to discuss aspects of the threat that the U.S.

RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY VIA AP

NATIONAL SECURITY President Trump revealed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador in a White House meeting last week, according to current and former U.S. officials, who said that Trump’s disclosures jeopardized a critical source of intelligence on the Islamic State. The information Trump relayed had been provided by a U.S. partner through an intelligencesharing arrangement considered so sensitive that details have been withheld from allies and tightly restricted even within the U.S. government, officials said. The partner had not given the U.S. permission to share the material with Russia, and officials said that Trump’s decision to do so risks cooperation from an ally that has access to the inner workings of ISIS. After Trump’s meeting, senior White House officials took steps to contain the damage, placing calls to the CIA and National Security Agency. “This is code-word information,” said a U.S. official, using terminology that refers to one of the highest classification levels used by U.S. spy agencies. Trump “revealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies.” The revelation comes after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey last week in the midst of a bureau probe into links between Trump’s campaign and Moscow. Trump’s subsequent admission that his decision was driven by “this Russia thing” raised accusations of attempted obstruction of justice. A day after dismissing Comey, Trump welcomed Russian

only learned through the espionage capabilities of a key partner. He did not reveal the specific intelligence-gathering method, but described how ISIS was pursuing elements of a specific plot and how much harm such an attack could cause. Most alarmingly, officials said, Trump revealed the city in ISIS’ territory where the U.S. intelligence partner detected the threat. Officials said Russia could use that detail to help identify the U.S. ally or intelligence capability involved. The Washington Post is withholding plot details, including the name of the city, at the urging of officials who warned that revealing them would jeopardize important intelligence capabilities. “If that partner learned we’d given this to Russia without their knowledge or asking first, that is a blow to that relationship,” the U.S. official said. U.S. officials said that the National Security Council continues to prepare multi-page briefings for Trump to guide him through conversations with leaders, but he has insisted that the guidance be distilled to a single page of bullet points, and often ignores those. “He seems to get in the room or on the phone and just goes with it,” the second ex-official said. “Does he understand what’s classified and what’s not?” GREG MILLER AND GREG JAFFE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Judges question intent of travel ban 9th Circuit court joins 4th Circuit in deciding fate of executive order

COURTS The federal appeals court panel weighing President Trump’s travel ban focused acutely on Trump’s own comments at a hearing Monday in Seattle — lobbing skeptical inquiries at lawyers on both sides of the issue as they tried to ascertain to what extent they should hold the president’s inflammatory rhetoric against him. On the campaign trail, Trump promised a “total and complete shutdown” of Muslims entering the U.S., and the three judges with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit specifically asked about how much they should consider that in deciding the future of the order. Judge Michael Daly Hawkins asked a Justice Department lawyer whether Trump had “ever disavowed his campaign statements,” and Judge Ronald M. Gould inquired about how the court should determine if the executive order was “a Muslim ban in the guise of a national security justification.” Trump’s travel ban — key sections of which have been frozen by two courts — tried to temporarily shut down the U.S. refugee program and suspend the issuance of new visas to residents of

six Muslim-majority countries. Those challenging the ban say it is unconstitutional because it was motivated by Trump’s desire to discriminate against Muslims, and they point to his comments to prove their case. The Justice Department argues that the executive order is within the president’s purview and that lower courts have been wrong to second-guess him on a matter of national security. The panel of three judges in the 9th Circuit will join the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit in deciding the fate of the ban. To fully reinstate the measure, the Justice Department would have to win in both the 4th and 9th circuits — or escalate the dispute to the Supreme Court. On Monday, acting solicitor

general Jeffrey B. Wall told the judges that they need only determine whether there was a “rational basis” for the president’s travel ban, and if they thought there was some bad intent, they should focus on official, unequivocal statements as evidence. He said the judges should tread lightly in weighing political remarks. “We shouldn’t start down the road of psychoanalyzing what people meant on the campaign trail,” Wall said. The 9th Circuit blocked Trump’s first travel ban, though the revised version is before a different panel. The 4th Circuit, based in Richmond, heard arguments last week. Their decision and the 9th Circuit’s probably won’t come for weeks. MATT ZAPOTOSKY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

U.S.: Syria cremating victims State Dept. accuses Assad government of executing thousands

Court lets stand ruling against N.C. voter ID law

DIGITALGLOBE VIA AP

SYRIA The United States accused Syria on Monday of executing thousands of imprisoned political opponents and burning their bodies in a crematorium to hide the evidence, testing the Trump administration’s willingness to respond to atrocities, other than chemical weapons attacks, that it blames on President Bashar al-Assad’s government. The allegation of mass killings came as President Trump weighs options in Syria, where the U.S. launched cruise missiles against a government air base last month after accusing Assad’s military of killing scores of civilians with a sarin-like nerve agent. Monday, Trump kicked off a week of meetings with Middle Eastern leaders, starting with the crown prince of Abu Dhabi a day before he hosts Turkey’s president. Trump flies to Saudi Arabia later this week. The State Department said it believes that about 50 detainees a day are being hanged at Sadynaya military prison, about 45 minutes north of Damascus. Many of the bodies, it said, are then burned in the crematorium. “We believe that the building of a crematorium is an effort to cover up the extent of mass murders taking place,” said Stuart Jones, the top U.S. diplomat for the Middle East, in accusing the Syrian government of sinking “to

a new level of depravity.” A recent Amnesty International report called Sadynaya a “human slaughterhouse” and said that thousands of Syrians have been abducted, detained and “exterminated” there, The Washington Post reported. The State Department released commercial satellite photographs showing what it described as a building in the prison complex that was modified to support the crematorium. Taken over the course of several years, beginning in 2013, the photos do not prove the building is a crematorium, but show construction consistent with such use. In presenting the photographs, Jones called on Russia and Iran to press Assad’s government to establish a credible cease-fire

The latest in Syria Air raids on the Islamic State-held village of Akayrshi and town of Boukamal in Syria have killed at least 32 civilians over the past two days, activists said Monday. It was not clear who was behind the strikes, but activists blamed the U.S.-led coalition. The Syrian military, meanwhile, announced it had regained full control of Qaboun, a northeastern neighborhood of Damascus, bringing all parts of the capital under the control of President Bashar al-Assad’s forces for the first time since 2012. with Syrian rebel groups and begin negotiations on a political settlement. “We are appalled by the

atrocities that have been carried out by the Syrian regime and these atrocities have been carried out seemingly with the unconditional support from Russia and Iran,” Jones said. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had been “firm and clear” in a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov last week that “Russia holds tremendous influence over Bashar al-Assad” and must exercise that influence “with great urgency.” A main point of that meeting “was telling Russia to use its power to rein in the regime,” she said. “Simply put, the killing, the devastation has gone on for far too long in Syria.” PHILIP ISSA AND JAMEY KEATEN (AP)

Thirty-eight percent disapproved of the firing, while 32 percent said they didn’t know enough about the matter to comment. Among those who have read or heard “a lot” on the subject, 53 percent said they disapproved, versus 33 percent who said they approved. The poll was conducted May 11-13; Comey was dismissed May 9. SUPREME COURT The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal to reinstate North Carolina’s law mandating voter identification and scaling back early voting, which a lower court said targeted African-Americans “with almost surgical precision.” The justices left in place last summer’s ruling by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals striking down the law’s photo ID requirement to vote in person. The 2013 measure approved by Republicans also reduced the number of early voting days and prohibited same-day registration during the early voting period. While Democrats and their allies who sued over the law praised the denial as a victory for voting rights, the door appears open for the GOP-controlled legislature to take another crack at a voter ID requirement and other election changes. Chief Justice John Roberts cautioned Monday in a two-page order that the rejection of the appeal is not a comment on the court’s view of the substance of the law. Thirty-two states already have some kind of voter ID law. Citing Roberts’ words in the order, N.C. House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate leader Phil Berger said that “all North Carolinians can rest assured that Republican legislators will continue fighting to protect the integrity of our elections” by requiring that a photo ID be shown by voters. After three frustrating seasons in a row, Ryan Zimmerman is hitting .385 with 13 home runs.

THREE POINTERS

Pittsburgh’s problems

Zimmerman: My secret? Feeling good. MLB Life at first base is different for Washington’s Ryan Zimmerman these days. Base runners used to arrive and exchange pleasantries with him, but recently their curiosity overpowers courtesy, compelling them to ask how exactly is he doing what he’s doing. “I don’t know man,” he tells his peers. With all due respect, he would rather not talk about it. Entering Monday, Zimmerman led the NL in batting average (.385) and slugging (.792) and was tied with Milwaukee’s Eric Thames for the home run lead with 13. His reemergence after a dismal 2016 season gives the Nationals a lineup that many in the organization believe is the most potent they have ever had. Zimmerman’s secret is simple: He is healthy, which is what he said it would take all along.

When the Nationals signed Zimmerman, 32, to a six-year, $100 million extension in 2012, they were counting on him to be the reliable .280, 20-home run face of the franchise. But for three seasons, injuries frequently kept the team’s longesttenured player off the field and hampered him when he was on it. He battled plantar fasciitis the past two years, and oblique trouble ended his 2015 season. From 2014 to 2016, he averaged 90 games a season and batted .242. In eight seasons prior, he averaged 140 games and hit .284. While stat heads could explain last year’s .218 average by noting that his exit velocity was elite, but his launch angle wasn’t, Zimmerman found neither consolation nor cause for concern in the numbers. Launch angle is a measurement of the vertical direction of the ball after it’s hit, while exit velocity is the speed with which the ball comes off the bat. After hearing the words “launch angle” for the umpteenth

First baseman says healthy start explains his throw-back season

The Nationals start a three-game series in Pittsburgh tonight, and although the Pirates have won two in a row, they’re still in last place in the NL Central. Here’s a look at their struggles.

Posture makes perfect Part of Ryan Zimmerman’s success this season has been working on his posture at the plate. At times last year he would dip and bend over, keeping himself from hitting outside pitches. Now, he goes through drills to keep himself upright, with his upper body firmly above his lower body. The result has been a revival of opposite-field power and hits against off-speed pitches that had caught him off-balance. C.J.

time this spring, Zimmerman wondered aloud if his latest home run — a low line drive to right center — should count.

He did not reconfigure his swing to change his launch angle. He chuckled at the idea of what he would look like trying to hit the bottom of the ball. Instead, Zimmerman did what he has all along in a career marked by streakiness: He trusted himself, and trusted what got him here. As it happened, his launch angle improved anyway. For three years, Zimmerman answered questions about his health and his swing and his ability the same way: politely, and without wavering. If he could get healthy, he insisted quietly, he would be the same old Ryan Zimmerman again. CHELSEA JANES

Only the Giants and the Royals entered Monday with fewer runs scored than the Pirates, who scored 138 in 38 games and have lost nine of 14 games this month.

2 Thin rotation Ivan Nova has a 2.48 ERA, and Gerrit Cole’s is 3.06, but the starting rotation looks bleak after that, and Jameson Taillon is out after testicular cancer surgery.

1 Fading star Andrew McCutchen, 30, has carried last year’s slump into 2017. He’s hitting .212 this year with a paltry .288 on-base percentage. He still leads the team with 17 RBIs.

When a 100-mph line drive hit Max Scherzer’s knee in the fourth inning Sunday night, he spun, stumbled, fell, got up, stumbled and went down again. He grimaced and writhed in pain. But no major damage was detected, and he went on to pitch an immaculate inning — nine pitches, three strikeouts — in the fifth. He allowed three runs in a 6-5 win over the Phillies. In all eight of his starts this season, Scherzer (4-2) has gone at least six innings. (TWP)

Kawhi injury puts focus on debated play NBA PLAYOFFS Kawhi Leonard had already launched his jump shot, and Zaza Pachulia kept sliding toward him while Leonard was in the air. Leonard landed on Pachulia’s foot and fell to the court in pain. Dirty? Possibly. Dangerous? Absolutely. The play that knocked Leonard out of the game with an injured left ankle and helped Golden State’s huge rally in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals is one the NBA started cracking down on four seasons ago in an effort to protect jump shooters. The Spurs, who on Monday ruled out Leonard for Game 2 tonight (9, ESPN), have seen both sides of the debate that raged long after the Warriors’ 113-111 victory Sunday. For eight seasons with San Antonio, small forward Bruce Bowen was hated by opponents because he crowded their jumpers so aggressively. On Sunday, a shooting foul was called on Pachulia, but that wasn’t enough for ABC analyst Jeff Van Gundy, who argued that he should have been assessed a flagrant one for intentionally sliding under Leonard, which both players denied. Markieff Morris also questioned the intent of the defender when the Wizards’ forward landed on Al Horford’s foot in Game 1 of their East semifinals, knocking Morris out of a game the Celtics won. Harvard studies the pros Research for health and safety suggests change in NFL concussion rules NFL A report released Monday by researchers at Harvard Law School sought to identify, study and compare health and safety issues in professional sports using information from six leagues — the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS and CFL. The study found that the NFL offers many health benefits superior to other professional sports

leagues but identified areas for improvement, including improving life insurance offerings, expanding its pension benefit and amending some of the rules that govern injuries. The researchers suggested that the NFL adopt a short-term disabled list to deal with concussions. The 255-page report is the largest and most thorough comparative study of its kind. Though funded by money set aside by the NFL and its players union, it wasn’t subject to approval by any of the leagues. While the report praised the

league for some of the benefits it offers its current players — such as the right to seek a second opinion from doctors and players’ ability to choose their own surgeons — it found some of the retirement benefits to be lacking compared with those in MLB, the NBA and NHL, the report stated. For example, baseball and hockey players are vested in their pensions on the first day they appear in a regular-season game; the NFL requires players to accrue three years before they’re eligible for retirement benefits. Experts say it is always best to try to meet your vitamin needs through a healthy diet.

CLASS ACTION

More isn’t always better Vitamin supplements can be beneficial in some cases, but buyers should beware NUTRITION The immensely profitable vitamin industry depends on consumers believing that more is better. Although supplements are beneficial for people with nutrient deficiencies, there’s little utility in pills, injections and intravenous drips if you already get enough vitamins from your diet. The excess may simply be a waste of money, but it can become downright dangerous. When should the buyer beware?

Food vs. supplements It’s difficult to get too much of a single vitamin from food, according to Susan Barr, a registered dietitian who contributed to establishing the Dietary Reference Intakes, which are used across North America to establish nutrient needs, assess dietary status and create industry standards. (Those numbers on nutrition facts tables? They are based on Dietary Reference Intakes.) “It’s always best to try to

meet your needs for vitamins by eating a healthy diet,” Barr says. “However, there are some situations in which a vitamin supplement may be recommended, for example, vitamin D and vitamin B12 for adults over age 50, who may be deficient in these nutrients.” And what about a daily multivitamin? Many people pop a pill as an “insurance policy” when their dietary habits are subpar. Although sometimes unnecessary, a multivitamin is safe as long as the dose isn’t excessive; don’t take more than one a day. “When choosing a supplement, a good general rule is to look for one that provides no more than 100 percent of the daily value for any nutrient,” Barr says.

How much is too much? Water-soluble vitamins, which include vitamin C and a range of B vitamins, are not stored in the body once ingested. Instead, they get excreted when you urinate.

False promises Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could hook up to an intravenous (IV) vitamin infusion that would prevent aging, provide energy and burn fat? These are claims made by purveyors of IV vitamins, which are, literally, vitamins that flow into your veins. But experts say there is absolutely no evidence to support the trend. The practice is not regulated, and practitioners don’t need to be licensed. Oh, and the cost ranges from $100 to $300 per infusion. C.R.

That’s why some vitamin naysayers tell supplement enthusiasts that they are “flushing money down the toilet.” But even though they aren’t stored in the body, excessive amounts can still have damaging effects. High levels of vitamin B6 (more than 100 milligrams per day) can cause severe nerve damage. More than 2,000 milligrams of vitamin C daily

can cause diarrhea and increase the risk of kidney stones. More than 1,000 micrograms per day of B-vitamin folate can increase the risk of vitamin B12 deficiency. And fat-soluble vitamins A, D and E do get stored in the body once ingested. That means they are more likely to cause toxicity than water-soluble vitamins.

Maintain a healthy diet “The public seems to love vitamins,” says Timothy Caulfield, professor and research director at the Health Law Institute of the University of Alberta. “We can’t forget that it is a huge industry and there are many voices in popular culture pushing the moreis-better message. But, in fact, there is absolutely no evidence to support the more-is-better approach. Our body needs the correct amount, which, for most of us, can be obtained by eating a healthy diet.” CARA ROSENBLOOM

What happened to all those erotic thrillers?

1948-2017

Emmy winner Powers Boothe was good at playing bad

FILM Few cinematic genres are both as alluring and enigmatic as the erotic thriller. A big-time moneymaker in the ’80s and ’90s that largely faded out by the new millennium, the erotic thriller combined elements of film noir and soft-core to sometimes cheesy, sometimes brilliant effect. Before internet porn and before big-budget franchises took over the culture, straight-to-video erotic thrillers lined the shelves of video stores nationwide. In the genre’s heyday, “Single White Female” became a colloquialism for deranged womanhood; jokes about the boiled bunny in “Fatal Attraction” abounded; and Sharon Stone’s uncrossed legs in “Basic Instinct” were a source of parody and genre shorthand. While the erotic thriller is seen as lowbrow and can play to gender stereotypes, the films’ stylized sheen and over-the-top performances make them fun to watch. But last month, the lackluster, erotic thriller-influenced “Unforgettable” debuted to little fanfare, raising a question: Where has the genre gone, and is it going to be making a comeback? There have been a few erotic thrillers in recent ecen years. Last fall,

“The box office hates us, doesn’t it?” Rosario Dawson wonders.

South Korean provocateur Park Chan-wook’s “The Handmaiden” was a twisty tale of deception and lesbianism. Brian De Palma’s last film, 2012’s “Passion,” was a glossy and murderous tale of two women, but didn’t make nearly the impact that his contributions to the genre in the ’80s did. With “Unforgettable,” producer-turned-director Denise Di Novi uses plenty of erotic thriller elements. Rosario Dawson stars as Julia Banks, an elegant woman engaged to a man (Geoff Stults) with a deranged ex-wife, Tessa (Katherine Heigl), who comes back to wreak havoc. The film does deserve some credit. It’s both directed and co-written by women. Dawson is an appealing performer, and it’s notable to see a woman of color starring in an overwhelmingly white genre.

WARNER BROS.

“Unforgettable” also makes some updates to the erotic thriller mold. Julia works for a Facebooklike startup, and Tessa, in some of the film’s most exaggerated scenes, uses technology to stalk and impersonate Julia, hacking into her phone and social media accounts. But as of this month, “Unforgettable” has made only around $10 million on a $12 million budget. In comparison, 1992’s “Single White Female,” a film that “Unforgettable” mirrors with its female psychosis and a fight-tothe-death denouement, opened at No. 2 at the box office, making more in its opening weekend alone than “Unforgettable” has so far even in 1992 dollars. Audiences just aren’t buying erotic thrillers the way they used to.

Powers Boothe, the actor who received an Emmy Award in 1980 for playing cult leader Jim Jones in the TV drama “Guyana Tragedy” and went on to play sinister roles in TV’s “Deadwood” and films “Tombstone,” “Sin City” and “The Avengers,” died Sunday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 68. Boothe’s publicist said he died of natural causes. Boothe portrayed other memorable antagonists, more recently the powerhungry vice president on Fox’s “24” and a political kingmaker on ABC’s “Nashville.” (AP/TWP)

The winners in the 19 categories, including music, film and sports awards, will be selected by BET’s Voting Academy, comprised of entertainment professionals and ffans. “[The accident] wasn’t going to stop me. As long as I could stand up and grab the mic, I was going to tell my story.”

Drake accompanied his cousin, Jalaah Moore, and her date as a chaperone to her senior prom in Memphis, Tenn. People magazine reported that Drake escorted the two to the dance in a white Rolls Royce and hosted an after-party at the local Hard Rock Cafe for 400 of Moore’s closest friends. Drake posted a photo of the couple — who wore matching custom sequined ensembles that the rapper had made — to his Instagram on Sunday. Moore and the prom’s attendees also shared pictures from the night to social media, showing Drake mingling and taking photos. (EXPRESS)
