Firefighters outside Chicago rescued a 3-year-old who had become stuck in a toy-dispensing claw machine, WLS-TV reported Friday. A little boy at a laundromat in Palatine, Ill., was so entranced by the stuffed animals in the claw machine that he somehow managed to crawl inside the bin. Firefighters were able to dismantle the top of the machine and remove the unharmed child. They also retrieved a toy for him. (EXPRESS)

Reservations make a return THE DISTRICT As soon as Claire Prichard heard about Maydan, she knew she wanted to go. The 23-year-old graduate student likes trying new places, and Maydan’s Middle Eastern menu sounded intriguing. Plus, unlike other gushedover names around D.C., it actually takes reservations, albeit for no more than two weeks in advance. Determined, Prichard logged on to OpenTable — Maydan’s only method to score a table — at 6:10 a.m. on a Saturday, hoping to find a slot 14 days out. Only 5 and 10:15 p.m. were available. “I was like, ‘This is not worth it,’ ” she says. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. In recent years, when D.C. diners have complained about reservations, it’s because many of the city’s top places didn’t take them. The only way to get a seat at the hottest young restaurants meant waiting in lines.

Police

DIXIE D. VEREEN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

A new generation of buzzy spots, sometimes from the same owners as the ones with lines, are going the opposite direction. They offer online reservations, opening books 14 days or more in advance. On the surface, it sounds like a way to allay stress from planning a night out. Instead, it’s added anxiety. The conversation among foodies has shifted from “How long did you have to wait to get in?” to “How long ago did you try to make a reservation?” Consider the case of Fancy Radish, the new, raved-about vegetable-focused restaurant on H Street NE. On Sunday, the next available 7 p.m. reservation for two was nearly three months away. If you had your heart set on that time on a weekend, you’d have to wait 89 days — till Aug. 10. Restaurateur Aaron Silverman has experimented with both concepts: walk-ins only and reservations only. He still considers his Rose’s Luxury a casual neighborhood spot, so reservations are taken only for groups of six or more. Silverman’s second restaurant,

Southeast D.C. is one of nine sites in the region that have been proposed for Amazon’s HQ2.

D.C.-area residents fear a potential headquarters could exacerbate existing negatives REGION Stephanie Landrum, a leader of Alexandria’s quest to lure Amazon’s second headquarters to the city, promises a proposed site in Potomac Yard could handle an influx of up to 50,000 jobs. “We only offer them stuff where they could fit,” said Landrum. “The scale of what has already been approved there [for development] is dense.” Many residents of the nearby Del Ray neighborhood are skeptical. They already suffer daily rush-hour backups. They fear the extra congestion from Amazon would erode the quality of life. “I can’t imagine a serious proposal to do this,” resident David Halwig said. “[Potomac Yard] is already challenged by traffic.” The divergent views of booster and homeowner illustrate a broader debate about whether and how the region could absorb the growth that Amazon would bring. Even enthusiasts acknowledge that success in the contest to host the company’s second headquarters — HQ2 — would have positive and negative effects. Elected officials and other civic leaders are giddy at the prospect of securing the jobs and an

estimated $5 billion investment that the Seattle-based online retail giant says it will make. Victory would yield an estimated $763 million a year in additional tax revenue, according to a Maryland study. It would diversify the region’s economy and bring the prestige of landing the biggest development prize in a generation. Northern Virginia, D.C. and Montgomery County are among the 20 finalists. Amazon, whose chief executive Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post and Express, is expected to decide by the end of the year. But many residents fear that winning the prize would actually exacerbate all the things they hate about living in the region: traffic, expensive housing, crowded schools and gentrification. Supporters of the Amazon bid say the region as a whole can handle the impact. They note that the Washington area’s population of 6.1 million is considerably larger than Seattle’s 3.7 million, so the additional people here would be a comparatively smaller burden. But the impact on any individual site could be staggering. Locating Amazon in Montgomery, for example, would increase the

county’s workforce by 10 percent. “You can’t overhype the impact of 50,000 jobs landing in one jurisdiction — it’s completely unprecedented,” said former Montgomery County Council member Steven Silverman. Amazon’s assertion that its jobs would pay an average salary of $100,000 a year, while alluring to promoters, raises concerns among District politicians and activists worried about widening the disparity between the city’s haves and have-nots. The Rev. H. Lionel Edmonds, a founder of the Washington Interfaith Network, warned against

creating “a millennials’ oasis, a little Amazon island of these folks making $100,000 a year, surrounded by people making less than half of that, or even a third of that.” Some officials and residents say the common interest in attracting Amazon would galvanize the region to overcome any challenges. For example, a desire to satisfy Amazon helped rally Virginia, Maryland and the District to agree this year on a dedicated funding plan for Metro that had been sought without success for more than 40 years. “It doesn’t do Amazon any good just from a practical standpoint to locate in a place where traffic gets significantly worse or schools get worse or no one can get on a Metro train because it’s so crowded,” said Heather Arnold, research director for Streetsense, a Washington-area consulting firm that assisted with several Amazon bids. “While we’ve been wrestling with these issues, I think we’ve lacked the impetus to deal with them in a comprehensive way. It might just give us the kick in the pants that we need.” ROBERT McCARTNEY AND KATHERINE SHAVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FALLS CHURCH A probe that began with reports of nude photos of students circulating at a middle school has mushroomed into a sexting investigation involving nearly a dozen students at two schools in Falls Church, according to a search warrant. No one has been charged in the case that centers on Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School, but investigators with the Falls Church police have recovered explicit images, discovered some were posted on social media and learned one high school student appeared topless during a live session on Instagram, according to the search warrant. President’s support of telecom giant ZTE marks major tonal shift

TECHNOLOGY President Trump pledged on Sunday to help Chinese telecom giant ZTE return to business, days after the company said it would cease “major operating activities because of the U.S. government’s recent trade restrictions, a dramatic shift in tone for a president who has accused China of stealing U.S. jobs. “President Xi of China, and I, are working together to give massive Chinese phone company, ZTE, a way to get back into business, fast, Trump tweeted. “Too many jobs in China lost. Commerce Department has been instructed to get it done! The comment could presage a reversal of one of the Trump administration’s toughest actions to date against a Chinese company. Last month, the Commerce Department penalized ZTE for violating a settlement with the U.S. government over illegal shipments to Iran and North Korea, barring U.S. firms for seven years from exporting critical microchips and other

parts to ZTE. As a result, ZTE halted major operations, stressing in a statement Wednesday that it is “actively communicating with the relevant U.S. government departments in order to facilitate the modification or reversal of the Commerce Department’s order. Now the crisis for ZTE may be nearing an end, a development that stunned trade and national security experts. The Treasury Department and the Commerce Department had been strongly

aligned against ZTE as recently as several days ago. A high-level Chinese delegation was in Washington on Friday and raised the issue of whether the Trump administration could relax its stance on ZTE, but Trump’s announcement on Sunday in the Twitter post caught many of his advisers flat-footed, as there had not been a broad agreement to change the administration’s approach, according to U.S. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Redefining sex scandals Experts say criminality plays role that morality once did in public’s view of extramarital affairs

Pompeo: U.S. won’t seek to overthrow Kim

Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens faces a felony charge stemming from his affair with a hairdresser who says he abused her.

from re-election bids because of claims they abused or coerced women, a two-year-long procession of allegations from women who accused President Trump of sexual improprieties has had no visible impact on his popularity. Whether Trump stands apart because people have long since factored his personal behavior into their opinions about him or because he has persuaded supporters that he truly is a victim of “fake news,” the debate about the president has focused not on the morality of his behavior, but on allegations about hush money. And that, according to people who study sex scandals, reveals a change in how many Americans think about affairs. “Sex scandals … offer a window onto our cultural perspectives on sex, gender and sexuality,” said Juliet Williams, a gender studies professor at the University of California at Los Angeles. “It seems almost quaint

Partisan stances shift When the Deseret News in Salt Lake City conducted a national poll at the beginning of the 2016 campaign, almost two-thirds of Democrats said an extramarital affair wouldn’t affect their voting decision, while 48 percent of Republicans said an affair wouldn’t matter. A year later, when pollsters asked the same question, the results were reversed: 57 percent of Republicans were willing to look past an affair, while 47 percent of Democrats said they could ignore a candidate’s indiscretions. (TWP)

to consider that just 20 years ago, a mere extramarital affair was enough to create a national crisis. The dominant frame then was a moral one — adultery, a young woman being taken advantage of.” Now, criminality plays the role that morality once did in defining public debate. “What’s

Sen. Joe Donnelly becomes second Democrat to announce support for CIA nominee Gina Haspel

happening now is story after story forcing us to acknowledge that sex is too often accompanied by violence,” Williams said. “The pivot point was Weinstein and the Me Too movement.” Dawn Eden Goldstein, a theologian at Holy Apostles College in Cromwell, Conn., said that after the sexual revolution, “it’s become harder to bring people down because of sexual affairs.” “So the element of violence had to come in to make a scandal viable,” Goldstein said. “Morally, we’ve devolved, but we’ve evolved in recognizing that abuse is abuse and we should speak out about it.” Still, partisan interpretations of scandals tend to shift with the political winds. “Partisanship really trumps everything else,” said Sarah Bryner, research director at the Center for Responsive Politics. “You are willing to let a lot of things slide for a member of your own party.” MARC FISHER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

JEFF ROBERSON (AP)

POLITICS If Missouri’s governor, Eric Greitens, is convicted or impeached in the coming weeks, as many in the state now expect, he will join a growing roster of politicians and celebrities in driving home a powerful new lesson: The shape of the American sex scandal has shifted. Adultery itself may no longer end a career, but if you use coercion or violence against women, you’re as good as done. Greitens, a Republican exNavy SEAL, is on trial on a felony charge stemming from his affair with a hairdresser who says he slapped, spanked and shoved her, in addition to taking a partially nude photo of her and threatening to blackmail her with it. Even as his trial gets underway Monday, Greitens also faces an impeachment vote as a special session begins Friday in the Missouri House of Representatives. “There’s been a shift,” said Missouri state Rep. Jean Evans, a Republican, “and people are more willing to speak publicly to condemn violence against women, even if it’s from your own party.” In politics, entertainment, sports and other industries, the arc and impact of sex scandals are changing, and the difference centers on coercion and consent. Prominent cases have led the cultural wave, as allegations of abuse derailed the public careers of comedian Bill Cosby, Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and now N.Y. attorney general Eric Schneiderman, who announced his resignation last Monday hours after he was accused of assaulting women. But even as politicians from both parties resign or pull away

POLITICS The United States is assuring North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that his ouster is not part of the agenda for the summit next month between Kim and President Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday. “We will have to provide security assurances, to be sure,” Pompeo said Sunday on Fox. The promise not to invade North Korea or otherwise seek Kim’s overthrow would be an incentive for him to give up his nuclear weapons. “This has been a trade-off that has been pending for 25 years,” Pompeo said, referring to the long history of failed negotiations with Pyongyang as well as the North Korean narrative that the U.S. is a mortal threat. Trump is scheduled to meet Kim in Singapore on June 12 for an unprecedented summit. In a CBS interview Sunday, Pompeo said, “I have told him that what President Trump wants is to see the North Korean regime get rid of its nuclear weapons program, completely and in totality, and in exchange for that we are prepared to ensure that the North Korean people get the opportunity that they so richly deserve.” North Korea said Saturday that all of the tunnels at the country’s northeastern nuclear test site will be blown up and destroyed in less than two weeks. Observation and research facilities and groundbased guard units will also be removed, the North said. (TWP/AP)

nation+world Police: A single family coordinated suicide bombings in Indonesia SURABAYA, INDONESIA Coordinated suicide bombings carried out by members of the same family struck three churches in Indonesia’s secondlargest city Sunday, police said, as the world’s most populous Muslim nation recoiled in horror at one of its worst attacks since the 2002 Bali bombings. At least seven people died at the churches in Surabaya, along with the six family members, the youngest of whom were girls aged 9 and 12, according to police. Another 41 people were injured. Indonesia’s president condemned

the attacks as “barbaric.” National police chief Tito Karnavian said that the father detonated a car bomb, two sons aged 18 and 16 used a motorcycle for their attack, and the mother and her two daughters wore explosives. Karnavian said the family had returned to Indonesia from Syria, where until recently the Islamic State group controlled significant territory. The attacks occurred within minutes of each other, according to Surabaya police spokesman Frans Barung Mangera. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks in a statement carried by its Aamaq news agency. It didn’t mention anything about families or children taking part

Israeli youths wave national flags in Jerusalem’s Old City on Sunday, ahead of the U.S. Embassy’s opening today.

U.S. prepares to open embassy in Jerusalem Israel celebrates, boosts security in anticipation of Palestinian protests JERUSALEM Israel on Sunday kicked off festivities to celebrate the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, even as it bolstered its forces along the Gaza border and in the West Bank in anticipation of Palestinian protests of the move. A day before the embassy’s formal opening, Israel hosted a gala party at its Foreign Ministry with President Trump’s daughter Ivanka, her husband, Jared Kushner, and other American VIPs. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump’s “bold decision” in upending decades of U.S. policy by recognizing

Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. “It’s the right thing to do,” he said. Trump announced his decision on Jerusalem in December. The move infuriated the Palestinians, who claim Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem as their capital. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas halted ties with the Trump administration and declared it unfit to remain in its role as mediator in peace talks. The rival Hamas movement, which controls the Gaza Strip, has been staging a series of weekly demonstrations against the Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the territory. Those protests are to climax Monday, with tens of thousands of people expected to gather along the Israeli border. Hamas has signaled that crowds, numbering perhaps

in the thousands, might try to break through the border fence to realize the “right of return” to lost homes. Both the embassy move and the protests have symbolic timing. Trump has said the opening is meant to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel’s establishment. The Palestinian protests also mark the date as the anniversary of their “naqba,” or catastrophe, when hundreds of thousands of people fled or were forced from their homes during the war surrounding the event. A mass border breach could trigger potentially lethal Israeli force. The U.N., European Union and rights groups have accused Israel of using excessive force against unarmed protesters.

Parents, friend of Paris knifing suspect held PARIS Investigators are following the trail of a 20-year-old Frenchman born in Chechnya who rampaged through a festive Paris neighborhood slashing passersby with a knife on Saturday. The man identified as Khamzat Azimov killed one person and wounded four others. Police shot him to death as he charged them, witnesses said. Less than 24 hours later, investigators were questioning three people — his parents and a friend. ISIS quickly claimed responsibility for the attack via its Aamaq news agency. Police detained Azimov’s parents in the northern 18th district of Paris and held a friend from Strasbourg in that city on the border with Germany in eastern France, French officials said. The friend was detained Sunday afternoon. Counterterrorism investigators want to know if Azimov had co-conspirators. The suspect was on a police watch list for radicalism, a judicial official not authorized to speak publicly about the case said. Chechnya’s president weighed in after the rampage, insisting on Sunday that France bears responsibility. “He was only born in Chechnya, and his growing up, the formation of his personality, his views and persuasions occurred in French society,” Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov said. THREE POINTERS

West finals tip in Texas

NBA PLAYOFFS | EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS

Celtics rout favored Cavs to start series

CELTICS 108, CAVALIERS 83 Jaylen Brown had 23 points and eight rebounds, Marcus Morris added 21 points with 10 boards and the Celtics opened up a 21-point first-quarter lead en route to a 108-83 blowout over the Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals Sunday in Boston. Al Horford scored 20 points for the Celtics, who ran off 17 straight points in the opening period. Cleveland never cut the deficit to single digits, and Boston was up 28 when Cavs coach Tyronn Lue pulled LeBron James for good with 7:09 left. Game 2 is Tuesday night. The Celtics limited James to 15 points on 5-of-16 shooting. James missed all five of his 3-point attempts but added nine assists and seven boards. Kevin Love finished with 17 points on

5-of-14 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds. Cleveland missed its first 14 attempts from 3-point range and shot just 15.4 percent from 3-point range as a team. After two quarters, Boston led 61-35 — the biggest halftime playoff deficit in James’ career. With injured stars Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving on the bench in street clothes, the Celtics continued their stunning run this season with what may have been the most surprising turn of events yet. A year after dropping the first two games at home against Cleveland in a five-game East final, the favored Cavs were never really in it. Boston improved to 8-0 at home this postseason. The Celtics took the floor Sunday to a hype video that began with the broadcast of Hayward’s injury in the first quarter of the first game, at Cleveland. Charles Barkley was among a variety of commentators who predicted the team’s demise, saying: “Their season’s over.”

Shorthanded squad goes on 17-0 run early, limits James to 15 points

The defending NBA champs from Golden State visit Houston for Game 1 of the Western Conference finals tonight (9, TNT). Here are three things to watch at Toyota Center.

Marcus Morris was one of three Celtics starters to score at least 20 points Sunday, when he put up 21 while helping Boston stymie LeBron James.

Morris pesters LeBron The Celtics started Marcus Morris in place of Aron Baynes on Sunday, and the rugged forward backed up his boast that he could defend LeBron James better than anyone except Kawhi Leonard of the Spurs. Morris helped pester James into seven of Cleveland’s nine turnovers. James had eight total in the fourgame sweep of the Raptors. (AP)

With Hayward, Irving, Daniel Theis and Shane Larkin all injured, Celtics coach Brad Stevens was down to an eight-man rotation. It was more than enough. Horford made his first seven

shots of the game and scored 10, including eight straight, during the 17-0 run that turned a threepoint deficit into a 21-7 lead. After James wiggled his way to a layup — Cleveland’s first points in 4 minutes, 43 seconds — Boston ran off eight more points in a row; Brown had six of them, and he finished the quarter with 13 points and five rebounds. Clevela nd scored seven straight points early in the third and finished the quarter with six in a row to make it 78-64. But Boston made the first three baskets in the fourth and, after running off nine in a row to make it 96-68 with 7:09 left, the Cavs conceded. JIMMYY GOLEN (AP)

Curry in rhythm Warriors guard Steph Curry has shot 44.1 percent from 3 — a personal playoff best. Houston’s Chris Paul, a seventime first-team all-defensive selection, will try to stifle him.

2 Small-ball weak spot Lobs from Paul to springy center Clint Capela could help the Rockets score on the Warriors’ vaunted “death lineup,” which has no player taller than 6 feet 9.

1 Harden in one-on-one Houston’s James Harden has scored 10.4 points per game on iso possessions — most in the playoffs. Long defenders Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala could give him fits.

STUDENT LOANS

Intern from anywhere Virtual positions allow students to get work experience from their dorm room INTERNSHIPS To get his foot in the door at a major sports franchise, Vishnu Edara did his homework — literally. As part of a sports analytics class at Georgetown University, Edara and his classmates worked for D.C. United as “virtual interns” — gaining valuable experience at an organization where it would’ve been hard to snag an in-person internship, let alone for a whole class full of students. “You’re actually working for a professional sports club,” says Edara, 27, a D.C. resident who received a master’s in sports industry management from Georgetown’s School of Continuing Studies. “That was possible only because of the virtual internship.” Virtual internships allow students to gain work experience without having to show up to an office — or even being in the same city as their employer. These positions can expand students’ options and allow them to

work on their own schedule. But to get the most out of them, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Have a guide For their virtual internships, Edara and his classmates analyzed D.C. United’s team data and provided insights. For instance, the team might want to know how long it takes to recover from long-distance travel, or what offensive or defensive alignments work best. Throughout the experience, they had an academic guide. “I’m there to coach them along,” says Mike Fanning, who teaches the sports analytics course at Georgetown. “They don’t need me much to tell them what to do. What they really need is support.” Fanning says virtual internships work well when the educational institution is there to help students get the most out of the experience. “You don’t just turn them

loose,” he says. Rachel Brown, assistant provost for university career services at George Washington University, agrees that academic feedback is often a missing component in the internship experience. The university has an online course that students can take while they’re doing a virtual or in-person internship, or

she recommends students find a mentor. “Be proactive on the educational side,” Brown says. “Get some perspective on all that you’re learning in the internship.”

Do your research When considering a virtual internship, students should ask why the internship is virtual rather than in-person, whether there will be opportunities to interact with other colleagues virtually, and how they’ll communicate with and receive feedback from their supervisor, Brown says. “Make sure there are clear expectations about the project and how the student will be evaluated,” she suggests. Kelley Bishop, director of career services at the University of Maryland, cautions students to look out for red flags, like a virtual internship that’s unpaid and doesn’t provide students CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

Mulvaney moves office for students The student arm of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is being folded into another office at the agency, a consolidation that some fear will limit its ability to stand up for student loan borrowers. In a memo Wednesday, Mick Mulvaney, acting director of the CFPB, informed staffers of a reorganization that will tuck the office for students and young consumers into the bureau’s office of financial education. Advocacy groups are interpreting the news as a move to dismantle the only unit in the federal government dedicated to protecting student loan borrowers from predatory actors in the financial sector. The office for students identifies problems in education lending and servicing, and devises policy recommendations, including new regulations or guidance, to solve those problems. with exposure to the broader organization. “The real concern that anyone would have is … ‘[Are you] basically outsourcing some work to me?’ ” Bishop says. “The definition of an internship goes well beyond ‘They gave me some work to do.’ ” While it can be more challenging to learn about a company’s broader organization and culture as a virtual intern, it’s not impossible, Brown says. “That would be one thing I would encourage people to ask about: What are the opportunities for me to learn about the broader organization, culture and context? And take advantage of those,” she says.

PURPOSE

The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) is now accepting applications from candidates who seek a deeper understanding of how politics, economics, and international relations drive global change.

“The definition of an internship goes well beyond ‘They gave me some work to do.’ ” KELLEY BISHOP, director of career services at the University of Maryland, explaining that virtual interns especially need to set ground rules for their positions

Weigh the pros and cons Ultimately each student has to decide whether the quirks of a virtual internship make it a good fit. For Zack Waldorf, a senior at George Washington University who was a human resources intern for a small public relations firm whose staff all worked

virtually, the downsides — including less camaraderie with his colleagues and some communication challenges — were outweighed by the flexibility that the virtual internship provided. Even so, he recommends setting some parameters. “You should enforce some sort of structure for yourself so you can stay organized and not get lost in the flexibility of it all,” says Waldorf, 21. Edara, who also had an externship with Washington’s NFL team, says a mix of in-person and virtual work experience during school would be ideal. “You should have the flexibility of being able to do it virtually whenever you can, but also sometimes it’s good to have inperson collaborations,” he says. Janice Fitzhugh connects couples with vendors to provide catering, flowers and more for their wedding.

With her help, many have wed Name: Janice Fitzhugh, 55 Position: Wedding coordinator, Covenant Weddings & Occasions

What she does Janice Fitzhugh’s job is to give couples the best day of their lives. No pressure, right? Just execute — to perfection — the day they’ve been dreaming about and planning for since one of them said yes. “We keep everything organized for our clients, from day one when they hire us until the event is over,” says Fitzhugh, a wedding coordinator with Covenant Weddings & Occasions, which is based in National Harbor. “It’s an attempt to keep them from stressing out about all the

details of the wedding, and allowing them to put their confidence in us to make their vision for their wedding come true.” Covenant Weddings & Occasions offers a number of packages, and couples can enlist Fitzhugh’s services either well in advance — sometimes two years ahead of the big day — or opt for day-of services only. If she’s planning the entire wedding, the process kicks off with an initial consultation designed to get to know the couple and what they want. A budget is also set during this meeting, so Fitzhugh can recommend and contact appropriate vendors, like florists and caterers. She remains the liaison throughout

the entire process. “We advocate on behalf of our clients and try to get the best deal for them,” she says. “If the bride says they want to have all lilies for their wedding, we make sure that vision comes to fruition.” One of Fitzhugh’s first steps is to craft a timeline that accounts for each month leading up to wedding day. She holds weekly conference calls with the couple during the planning process, checking off tasks that range from larger, such as securing a venue, to smaller, like addressing invitations. (Not that invitations are easy: There are rules to the etiquette, she cautions. You’re CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

not getting married on “June 4,” for example — the date needs to be spelled out.) When the day of matrimony arrives, Fitzhugh is on the scene early. She checks on the couple to see how they’re feeling and provide any last-minute reassurance, then monitors the vendors. Have the photographer and videographer arrived, and do they know where to position themselves so they’re not interrupting guests? Are the bridesmaids holding their non-wilting bouquets? Once the bride makes it down the aisle, Fitzhugh heads to the reception to oversee setup. “We make sure all the vendors are on time, that the DJ understands what music is playing

wedding planners who might be hiring and happened upon Covenant Weddings. She got in touch, hit it off with owner and senior consultant Diane George and was hired as a wedding-day assistant before transitioning to a coordinator role.

How she got the job

Who would want this job

Fitzhugh first planned a wedding more than 25 years ago, when her brother’s fiancee enlisted her help. “I’ve always been a creative person,” she says. “I didn’t have a wedding for my first marriage, and I always wanted to, so I think my love for it came out of that.” She began offering her services to friends, family and church members who were getting married, but it wasn’t a full-time endeavor. Seven years ago, she searched online for

If you’re cynical about romance, this is not the job for you. More practically, you need to be hyperorganized (you’ll be managing 12 to 24 months of important tasks, and meeting each deadline is crucial). “You also need to be creative and have a really good personality,” Fitzhugh says. “You need an ability to lift people’s moods and refocus their attention — especially brides, when something doesn’t go right. You need to be able to calm them down.”

“You need an ability to lift people’s moods and refocus their attention — especially brides, when something doesn’t go right. You need to be able to calm them down.” JANICE FITZHUGH, explaining that a good wedding planner needs more than just organizational skills

How you can get the job Studying event planning could be helpful, but formal training isn’t required. Nor is certification,

though some organizations — like the American Association of Certified Wedding Planners — offer it, and it can help you stand out to prospective clients. But Fitzhugh is adamant that hands-on experience is best. She recommends seeking out a successful wedding planner and asking to intern or even volunteer. “Especially on wedding day, because it’s a long day,” she says. “You need to really understand what it’s like to see if it’s the right thing for you.” And if you do say yes to wedding planning, Fitzhugh says, expect a fulfilling union. “Just seeing everything come to life and the excitement and joy in our clients’ faces, knowing we’ve done exactly what they asked us to do — that’s the cherry on the cake,” she says. Benedict Cumberbatch generously creates a GIF for the internet’s eternal use.

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘New Girl’ 9 p.m. Tuesday on Fox

Pouring on the misery ‘Patrick Melrose’ provides Benedict Cumberbatch with a despair-riddled showcase TELEVISION “Patrick Melrose,” a despairing yet impressive adaptation of Edward St. Aubyn’s semi-autobiographical novels, is about a lonely little rich boy who is raped by his narcissistic father and ignored by his coldly aloof mother. In adulthood, Patrick becomes a raging heroin addict, clinging to recovery on the fringes of British high society. With apologies to F. Scott Fitzgerald, the rich are different from you and #MeToo. It is to “Patrick Melrose’s” credit that a viewer winds up feeling sorry for the title character despite his bad manners and volatile binges. The five-part series (which premiered Saturday on Showtime)

stars Benedict Cumberbatch, the hypermagnetic “Sherlock” star who uploaded himself to the lovelorn psyche of the internet. Suffice to say that “Patrick Melrose” is the Cumberbatchiest thing the world has seen. As a star vehicle, it affords him the opportunity to summon a manic mural of euphoria, misery and whatever other emotions he cares to season the scenery with before devouring it whole. Part 1 can be both captivating and off-putting, depending on how much a viewer enjoys watching a drug user hit rock bottom in a fancy hotel suite. It’s 1982 and Patrick (Cumberbatch) learns that his father, David (Hugo Weaving), has died in New York; it’s up to

Enduring suffering If you’ve been paying attention to the news, it’s almost impossible to watch “Patrick Melrose” outside of the current context and conversations about sexual abuse and authority. Although the backdrop is one of vivid wealth and socially sanctioned hedonism, Patrick’s suffering is, at its core, the same as anyone else’s. H.S.

Patrick to travel from London to retrieve his father’s cremains, and he unwisely chooses the trip as an opportunity to quit heroin cold turkey. As Patrick returns to London to endure the agony of withdrawal, Part 2 takes a

flashback to 1967, when David sexually assaults young Patrick (Sebastian Maltz). The events that transpire are necessarily abhorrent — carefully yet unambiguously effective in their depiction. Patrick’s mother, Eleanor (Jennifer Jason Leigh), is herself a study of detachment, either oblivious to her son’s pain or, more chilling, choosing not to see it. Cumberbatch’s all-in performance is a worthy reason to see this series through. Casual viewers might be surprised at how deeply they become invested in Patrick’s fate, hoping he can find some kind of the happiness that money cannot buy. HANK STUEVER

SHOWTIME

The seventh and final season of the adorkable comedy concludes with a one-hour finale wrapping up the long-simmering romance between Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson).

Could you paint a picture of a horse … while riding a horse? Make a block of ice quickly disappear? Pick blue M&Ms out of a bowl of multicolored M&Ms while wearing boxing gloves? Yeah, you’ve probably never thought about any of those things. Yet once you start, you can’t help but wonder … what’s the best strategy? The ingeniously goofy

challenges are what make “Taskmaster” so appealing. The series wraps its Comedy Central run Friday with two episodes starting at 11 p.m. This “Taskmaster” is the U.S. version of a British series created by comic Alex Horne, who’s been imported to sit beside host Reggie Watts. He and Horne are delightfully snide. When a contestant flames out, Horne notes, “I know it was sad but there will be sadder things in all our lives.” And Watts’ absurd signoff: “And

The show is irresistibly silly — and instructional, too. For example, hitting an ice block with a shovel while shouting, “Die, die, die!” (Freddie’s tactic) is nowhere near as effective as covering it up with a big rug (Lisa’s winning move). “Just realized they HAD to make Monica & Ross brother and sister otherwise all the ‘Friends’ would have stuck with Carol in the divorce.” @MREMILYHELLER, tweeting her theory

on why the showrunners made Ross and Monica Geller siblings in the 1990s sitcom “Friends.” Many tweeters agreed that the main characters would have taken the side of Ross’ ex-wife Carol, a more likable character, when deciding who to remain friends with after the divorce if Monica weren’t Ross’ sister.

“Meeting the young adults of the Parkland incident. So much fire and inspiration in their eyes. [It] was a great joy.” @JAMESSHAWJR9, commenting on his Saturday breakfast meeting with some of the survivors of February’s Parkland, Fla., school shooting. Since then, the students have become prominent social and political activists, leading the March for Our Lives organization. James Shaw Jr. has been lauded as the hero of the shooting at a Tennessee Waffle House in April; he rushed the gunman and wrestled away the suspect’s gun. Among others, Shaw met with Emma Gonzalez, David Hogg, Cameron Kasky, Diego Pfeiffer, John Barnitt, Jaclyn Corin and Alex Wind.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You may be surprised to discover what someone else knows — especially since the method of the discovery takes a very unusual form. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) It’s important you follow the rules today, without question. Now is not the best time to try to assert your individuality. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You need a little wiggle room today in order to do what needs to be done — and you were wise simply to take it. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You can enjoy a homecoming of sorts, but first you’re going to have to get something done that all those around you are waiting for you to do. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) A complicated situation is made easier today because you are applying your considerable brainpower to a fundamental problem.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) What you see isn’t what you get — especially when you have wandered into unfamiliar territory. All you have to rely on are your instincts. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Trying to make things happen today can speed things up; waiting merely extends the status quo.

Cardi B sets the stage for return to Instagram

Lindsey starts career as guru Lindsey Buckingham opened up about his exit from Fleetwood Mac during a political fundraiser Friday, Medium reported. Buckingham left the band last month because of a disagreement over the group’s upcoming tour schedule. “It harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build,” he said. “That legacy was really about rising above difficulties in order to fulfill one’s higher truth and one’s higher destiny.” (EXPRESS)

Cardi B deleted her Instagram account Saturday after posting a lengthy response to insults from rapper Azealia Banks. Speaking on “The Breakfast Club” radio show Friday, Banks called Cardi B an “illiterate, untalented rat” and a “caricature of a black woman.” “The difference between me and you, I’ve never pretended to be or represent someone I’m not!” Cardi B wrote on Instagram, later also setting her Twitter to private. “Just because I mix a few words up forget to use commas or misspell a few words doesn’t make me illiterate and doesn’t make me stupid. And because I laugh a little harder or talk a little louder doesn’t make me a caricature!” (EXPRESS)

True starts eternal quest of one-upping royal baby

Hayley Kiyoko tweeted a critique of Rita Ora’s new song “Girls” on Friday, arguing that the lyrics do “more harm than good for the LGBTQ+ community.” “Every so often there come certain songs with messaging that is just downright tone-deaf,” the singer wrote. “We can and should do better.” R&B artist Kehlani also called out the song on Twitter, criticizing its “awkward slurs.” (EXPRESS)

Khloe Kardashian debuted baby True on Saturday with an Instagram video snippet wishing her daughter a happy first month. The tiny reveal, complete with a flower filter, came as allegations swirl that the reality star’s boyfriend, Cleveland Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson, cheated on her while she was pregnant. “Happy 1 month old, mama. I love you, pretty girl,” Kardashian says off camera. (AP)
