‘He’s Real, I Swear. He Just Died While Waiting in Traffic’ A commuter heading into Boston had a real dummy along for the ride. State Trooper John Carnell was working on Thursday morning when he saw a vehicle enter the carpool lane on Interstate 93 north with a suspiciouslooking passenger. Carnell pulled over the vehicle and found that indeed, the driver had propped up a jacket with a mannequin head on top in the passenger seat. The fake head even had a little mustache drawn on. Down With Moose Paparazzi A Washington state Fish and Wildlife officer issued a warning to a man who drove while his wife shot video of a moose running through a neighborhood. Enforcement Officer Graham Grant said the department wants to make a statement that it’s unlawful to harass a moose. He says the moose was in distress last weekend and ran toward traffic because the car was following. (AP) IDENTIFICATION

He Only Used That Because He Forgot His Social Security Card An Oregon police affidavit says a robber at the Home Federal Bank two weeks ago demanded money by giving the teller a note written on the back of a grocery receipt. It was only part of the receipt, an affidavit said, but it had the last four digits of a food stamp account and the account balance — enough to get investigators going. (AP)

GOP Pursues Benghazi Inquiry Democrats say it’s an attempt to raise money, gain voters

Another Probe

House Republicans on Thursday rammed through a measure opening a new investigation of the deadly assault in Benghazi, Libya, vowing to dig deeper in a search for truth. Democrats declared it merely a political ploy to raise campaign cash and motivate voters, and they’re weighing a boycott. A divided House voted 232-186 to establish the panel that Speaker John Boehner insisted would answer questions that linger almost 20 months after the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission. tough re-election campaigns, joined in supporting the probe. The panel’s investigation will examine the entirety of the attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. Republicans say they’re unsatisfied with explanations so far, and they have leveled a range of accu-

sations against President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and others. Chief among them: That the administration misled the American people about the nature of the attack during a presidential election and stonewalled investigators. Democrats are deriding the

New York A group of Sept. 11 family members vowed Thursday to protest when the unidentified remains of those killed at the World Trade Center are moved to a repository this weekend. The relatives said the plan to house the remains underground in the same building as the National September 11 Memorial Museum — in an area prone to flooding — is disrespectful and they would rather see them entombed above ground on the adjacent memorial plaza. The remains will be moved Saturday from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to the memorial site. They will be placed in a custom-designed repository at bedrock level in the same building as the museum and will be overseen by the medical examiner with hopes that improvements in technology could eventually help identify the 7,930 body parts. Vibram FiveFingers Minimalist Running Shoe The claim: That running in glovelike shoes has health benefits. The objection: A woman filed suit saying that the company deceived consumers when it claimed, without any scientific backup, that its shoes could decrease foot injuries and strengthen foot muscles. The result: A settlement was filed last week, though Vibram has not admitted wrongdoing. What it means to you: Vibram agreed to spend $3.75 million to give refunds to people who bought the shoes and said it would stop making health claims in its advertisements.

Kellogg’s Kashi

The claim: That the app lets people send photos, videos and messages that disappear forever.

The claim: That some Kashi products are “all natural.”

The objection: The Federal Trade Commission accused Snapchat of deceiving consumers with assurances about the “disappearing nature” of messages sent through the service and other data collection and security practices.

The objection: A class-action lawsuit accused Kashi of misleading people by stamping the phrase “All Natural” or “Nothing Artificial” on products that contained a variety of synthetic and artificial ingredients, including pyridoxine hydrochloride, glycerin and sodium phosphate.

The result: The FTC on Thursday said that Snapchat agreed to settle without admitting fault. The settlement doesn’t have a financial component, but if Snapchat violates the agreement, it could be forced to pay up to $16,000 for each violation.

The result: A settlement was filed May 2. Kellogg says it stands by its advertising and labeling practices but that it would change its formulas or labels nationally by the end of the year. The company will also pay $5 million to settle the suit.

Denver Frustrated by the cash-heavy aspect of its new marijuana industry, Colorado is trying a long-shot bid to create a world financial system that would give pot businesses a way to access basic banking services. But some think the plan — approved by Colorado lawmakers Wednesday — won’t work. “I don’t see it,” said Shawn Coleman, a lobbyist who represents marijuana retailers. “The administration has gone as far as they possibly could to help the marijuana industry without an act of Congress.” Banks routinely reject pot businesses for even basic services because they fear running afoul of federal law, which considers marijuana and its proceeds illegal. And that means pot shop owners deal in large amounts of cash, making them targets for criminals. Or they try to find ways around the problem, like drenching their proceeds in air freshener to remove the stink of marijuana and try to fool traditional banks into accepting their money. Colorado’s plan would have state-licensed pot growers and sell-

ers pooling their cash into uninsured financial cooperatives. The cooperatives would then ask the U.S. Federal Reserve System to let them access so-called “merchant services,” a broad category that includes accepting credit cards and being able to write checks. The architects of the gambit concede that it’s far from certain whether cannabis-specific cooperatives would ever get off the ground. But they say the bill’s passage should at least signal to banks and regulators that the marijuana industry is willing to go to great lengths for banking services. Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper is expected to approve the plan. There’s no timeframe for pot shops to start forming cooperatives, or for the Federal Reserve to respond to the request. KRISTEN W YAT T (AP)

Folding. For the past 90 years, students at Davidson College in North Carolina have enjoyed something few college kids get (unless they go home every weekend to Mom): laundry service. Yes, they simply drop off a bag of dirty clothes and pick it up a day or two later, all clean and folded. But, alas, this luxury is being phased out. By May 2015, Davidson will require students to do their own wash. It will still be free. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Forty-two years later, he says he’s never named the Irish Republican Army members who killed his mother because he fears doing so could leave his children without a father. In many places, it would be too late to prosecute a murder case gone cold, four decades after McConville’s body was secretly buried on a lonely stretch of Irish beach. But in Northern Ireland, where the ghosts of “the Troubles” continue to haunt

the fragile peace, it may be too soon. Despite 16 years of relative calm ushered in by the Good Friday Agreement, one of the most successful peace accords of modern times, trust between the unionist and republican camps runs remarkably thin, with especially little agreement about how to reckon with the legacy of 3,600 deaths over three

El-Sissi Warns Egyptian Press Cairo Egypt’s top presidential candidate, the former military chief, warned newspaper editors not to press issues of freedoms of speech and other rights or campaign for democratic reforms, saying demands and protests jeopardize national security and that full democracy is an “idealistic” goal that could take 25 years to reach. Field Marshal Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi also said he would “walk away” if people rose up against him demanding him to step down — a promise also once made by Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, who in the end refused to resign in the face of massive protests against him. Field Marshal Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi told editors Thursday not to scare Egyptians.

20 editors of Egypt’s main newspapers, parts of which were aired on a private TV network Thursday and published on newspaper websites, el-Sissi told them that practice of freedoms must be balanced with national security and that the

media should focus on rallying the public behind “the strategic goal” of “preserving the Egyptian state.” Barking “watch out!” el-Sissi warned the editors against “scaring people” with coverage that “creates skepticism or uneasiness in society.” Speaking about protests, he said: “You write in the newspaper, ‘No voice is louder than freedom of speech!’ What is this? What tourist would come to a country where we have demonstrations like this?” El-Sissi is seen as the overwhelming favorite to win the May 26-27 election. decades of violence known as the Troubles. Both sides warn of dark plots to bring the instability back. “Legacy issues should be dealt with by an independent, international body,” Adams said. Peter Robinson, the unionist leader of the Northern Ireland Assembly, dismissed that idea, saying that Northern Ireland’s own justice system is up to the task and that “a murder is a murder whether it’s committed in this decade or any previous decade.” Although Adams was released Sunday, few doubt where the standoff would have led had he been charged. “There would have been riots,” said Alfie Butler, who lost his niece and her daughter in a 1993 bombing. “It’s fine to talk about progress in Northern Ireland. Camera Action As soon as I sat down on a Green Line train last weekend, two things caught my eye. The first wasn’t such an unexpected Metro sighting — just some freaky dude tapping his toes wildly at the other end of the car. What really caught my attention was the security camera affixed to the ceiling. “Thanks for keeping tabs on Mr. Tap Dancer for me,” I thought. “You new around here?” in HD quality. And those forthcoming 7000 series cars — a few of which were spotted on Wednesday taking a test drive through the system — will all have multiple cameras on board. By 2018, when those cars account for half of Metro’s fleet, there will be a lot more footage of what’s happening on trains. There’s obviously a big safety impetus behind this. When Metro

BEN CLAASSEN III

When I posed the same question the next day to Metro spokesman Dan Stessel, I learned the answer was no. A few years ago, some cameras were installed on trains during a pilot program that was never advanced. “The number of cars that have them is in the single digits,” he explained. (And it’s unclear whether the handful of cameras riding the rails today are operational.) But security cameras are important crime-fighting tools for Metro, he added, pointing to the fact that stations now have ones that record

can capture images of fights and phone snatches and other criminal behavior, it’ll hopefully be easier to catch the perpetrators involved. And other riders won’t feel as compelled to record it themselves, which is good news for anyone who read popville.com this week. (Just look for the post about the Red Line masturbator. Or better yet, don’t.) Here’s my suggestion of another way to leverage this technology: Shame the snackers. Readers frequently tell me that despite the rules against eating on the Metro, it’s looking more like a moveable feast every day. Of course, I see it too — also on that Green Line train this weekend was a young woman brazenly sucking on a lollipop. Metro should give the worst offenders the montage treatment, and splice together videos like that one released a few months ago showing drunken platform blunders. Maybe no one worries about getting fined, but the fear of going viral might scare them into dropping the burrito.

Welcome to Harry S. Truman Union Station? Washington Happy 130th birthday Harry Truman! How do you celebrate the occasion for the notoriously nononsense president? Two senators from Missouri have a thought: Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt on Thursday introduced a bill that would rename Washington’s Union Station for the former president. But why Union Station? The senators noted that the station once housed U.S. Car No. 1, or the presidential rail car, which Truman used for his “whistle-stop

campaign” tour, which started and ended at Union Station. When Truman left D.C. in 1953, he departed from Union Station by train, and 5,000 people showed up to see him off, according to the senators. The station, where as many as 70,000 people now pass through daily, is in the midst of a major makeover. The proposal to rename D.C.’s main train hub for an out-oftown resident might bring pause to some locals, but Union Station is owned by the federal government, so Congress has the right to name the station whatever it wants. In Brief

SILVER SPRING

Metro: Transit Center Should Be Strengthened Metro, acknowledging safety concerns about the Silver Spring Transit Center, has agreed to work with Montgomery County, Md., on a repair plan to strengthen interior beams and girders prior to opening the facility, transit agency officials said Thursday. The additional work is virtually certain to push the opening of the bus and train hub — already more than two years behind schedule — into 2015. It will add an estimated $7 million to the project, which is about $30 million over budget. (THE WASHINGTON POST) WASHINGTON

Thrown Items Lead to White House Lockdown

College Park, Md. The leading Democratic candidates for Maryland governor sparred Wednesday night over health care, the death penalty and corporate taxes in a spirited first debate that featured an unusually combative performance from front-runner Anthony Brown. Attorney General Doug Gansler used the face-off at the University of Maryland at College Park to continue his attacks on Brown’s handling of the state’s online health-insurance marketplace, which Gansler called “an unmitigated disaster.” Brown threw several elbows as well, criticizing Gansler for his past support of the death penalty, which lawmakers repealed last year, and arguing that Gansler’s plan to cut corporate taxes would undercut the state’s efforts to expand prekindergarten education. Brown also sharply questioned Gansler’s judgment in not break-

The White House was put on lockdown for the second time this week after two people threw items over fences on opposite sides of the presidential compound at almost exactly the same time Thursday, the Secret Service said. The lockdown was lifted after about 90 minutes and both suspects were charged with “throwing objects — missiles,” according to Secret Service officials. One suspect allegedly threw a cassette tape and the other “miscellaneous papers.” (TWP) MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD.

ing up a teen beach party in Delaware at which there was apparent underage drinking last year. The third Democrat on stage, Del. Heather Mizeur, largely stayed out of the fray, refraining from attacks on either of her two better-known opponents and arguing that she has a record of working collaboratively to get things done. “This race is not about personal bickering,” Mizeur said. “People want leadership.”

The hourlong televised event, hosted by “Meet the Press” moderator David Gregory, was the first of at least three debates expected before a June 24 primary in which the candidates are seeking the Democratic nomination to succeed Gov. Martin O’Malley, who is term-limited. Four Republicans are vying for their party’s nomination. Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by more than 2 to 1 in the state. JOHN WAGNER ( THE WASHINGTON POST )

Marijuana: Heather Mizeur voiced support for regulating and taxing marijuana, saying Maryland should follow the lead of Colorado and Washington state. Both Anthony Brown and Doug Gansler said such a move would be premature. The health exchange: Gansler argued that Brown mishandled the most important assignment handed to him. Brown acknowledged that he was partly responsible but outlined several decisive steps in response to the crisis. Mizeur declined the opportunity to assign responsibility for the health exchange’s troubles. Business climate: All three agreed that the state could do more to improve. Brown questioned a “corporate giveaway” advocated by Gansler — a gradual reduction in the corporate income tax from 8.25 percent to 6 percent to match that of Virginia. Gansler argued the move would lead to an expanded tax base. The Redskins: They all also agreed that the team, whose home stadium is in Prince George’s County, should change its name. (T WP)

Nats Trot Out Fister

Offseason acquisition will make his team debut Friday vs. A’s

Career ERA of Doug Fister, who played five seasons with Seattle and Detroit. He’ll make his Nationals debut Friday in Oakland.

“For me, it’s always been my mental release, my mental escape from anything,” Fister said. “It allows me not only to physically stay in shape but it’s a stress reliever. It’s a way to work out many problems. It’s a good thing for me.” The avid distance runner, who enjoyed the scenic views Seattle had to offer, said he’s looking forward to seeing what the nation’s capital has in store. He’s heard plenty about the various running trails through the district. So in addition to catching Fister out near the ballpark, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the 6-foot-8 righthander running through Rock Creek Park or the National Mall

Nationals Sometime soon, it might become commonplace to spot Doug Fister jogging down the streets near Nationals Park. But don’t expect him to slow down. Fister, the right-handed starter who will make his Nationals debut Friday in Oakland, was known to run around Seattle near Safeco Field when he was with the Mariners two teams ago. Folks would recognize him, but Fister kept going. Nothing could distract him from his running.

@

Who’s Hot? Jayson Werth, Nats: In six games in May, Werth is hitting .417 and has scored three runs. He has six hits in his past two games. He’ll face a tough Oakland pitching staff that ranks fourth in the majors in ERA (3.05). Nationals right-hander Doug Fister has spent the entire season on the disabled list with a strained right lat.

Rendon Impresses Nationals utility player Kevin Frandsen, left, joined the Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan on Wednesday and was asked which of his new teammates has impressed him the most. “[Anthony] Rendon,” he said. “He is as impressive as any young player; in all honesty, he’s the best young guy we have, by far.” Asked if he was including Bryce Harper in his evaluation, Frandsen said “absolutely.” Frandsen praised Rendon’s versatility in the field, attitude and ridiculously quick hands. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

this summer. However, he hasn’t been able to do much of that in his downtime since becoming a National, as he began the year with a strained right lat that put him on the disabled list. Now healthy, Fister is getting his first opportunity to pitch for Washington. Though he hasn’t been running outdoors, Fister has maintained his routine inside on the treadmill. “The running is something I’ve definitely kept up on,” he said. “I haven’t done it outside, but I want to make sure it’s maintained.” Staying on top of that kind of cardio should help Fister with his

endurance when he takes the mound against the A’s. Nationals manager Matt Williams said he won’t have Fister exert too much energy in his first start, since he’s had such a long layoff since the lat injury surfaced. “I don’t think we can expect too much,” Williams said. “Doug being out that long, I don’t expect he’ll be able to go out there and throw 120 pitches.” Williams said Fister’s pitch count will more likely be in the 100 range. Fister said he’s ready, both mentally and physically, for his return to the mound. “I’m anxious to help these guys and be a part of the team,” he said. JASON BUT T (FOR E XPRESS)

Not as Young as They Look DARRON CUMMINGS (AP)

Wizards frontcourt provides plenty of playoff experience Wizards

Pacers center Roy Hibbert scored a game-high 28 points Wednesday.

What to Watch for In Friday’s Game 3

NAM Y. HUH (AP)

The Wizards have been labeled the young, inexperienced team in the playoffs by the NBA cognoscenti, based primarily on two things — they haven’t played in the postseason in forever and the team is fronted by guards John Wall and Bradley Beal. But the Wizards have a veteran group with plenty of playoff experience, including a great deal of it in their starting lineup. Washington has six players on its roster — Nene, Trevor Ariza, Marcin Gortat, Al Harrington, Andre Miller and Drew Gooden — with more than 40 games of playoff experience each under their belts heading into Friday night’s Game 3 against Indiana at Verizon Center, and that has paid countless dividends during the team’s surprising playoff run. “If you look at the starters out there on the court, those guys have a Western Conference finals appearance, two of them have NBA Finals experience and one of them has a championship ring,” said Gooden, who went to the finals in 2007 as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. “I don’t know how young that really is. Besides Bradley and John, we’re not a young team.” Ariza and Gortat faced off against each other in the 2009 NBA Finals as members of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Orlando Magic,

Wizards center Marcin Gortat, left, and forward Nene each have more than 40 career playoff games under their belts.

The Old Guys Deserve Some Credit, Too The Wizards’ young backcourt gets most of the national publicity, but the starting frontcourt has been just as important in this playoff run. Here are the combined stats of the two groups. (E XPRESS) Players Wall and Beal Average Age 21.5 Career playoff games 14 ’13-’14 playoff points 254 ’13-’14 playoff double-doubles 1 ’13-’14 playoff field goal % 38.7

respectively, while Nene went on several playoff runs with the Denver Nuggets. Those three members of the Wizards’ starting lineup have played in 151 postseason games — not a far cry from the Pacers’ starting five, which checks in at 241

playoff contests. So it’s not as much of a mismatch as it might seem. “Their experience has helped us, there’s no question,” coach Randy Wittman said. “That’s kind of what we envisioned moving forward into this year, bringing some veterans in to help our younger guys

“We could’ve easily been a 55-win team. We let 15, 20 games go into overtime or everybody was not coming out and playing right away. And it all starts with me: Some nights I didn’t bring it all.” — W IZ A RDS POINT GUA RD JOHN WA LL TELLS SPORTS ILLUSTRATED IN A LONG FEATURE IN THIS WEEK’S ISSUE. THE WIZARDS FINISHED THE REGULAR SEASON 44-38, INCLUDING A 4-8 MARK IN OVERTIME GAMES.

in situations like that, and it’s been beneficial.” Wittman points to Harrington, a 15-year NBA vet, as one of the prime examples. Even though Harrington’s been a glorified cheerleader during the games — he’s played seven minutes in three playoff appearances — behind the scenes, he’s been a critical source of information and knowledge. “He was very valuable for us in practice, in the locker room and talking on the bench with these guys,” Wittman said. “That’s invaluable, so we’re pleased with that.” The Wizards’ veterans have made a huge impact on the court as well, with Ariza, Gooden and Gortat all playing major roles in the Game 1 victory, helping to pick up the slack when Wall and Beal have struggled. “These guys have meshed in so well along the way,” Beal said. “It’s crazy because whenever you add new pieces you think it’s going to be totally different and you have to start all over again to get them up to base, but everybody we’ve added has definitely contributed tremendously. We haven’t changed anything.” ELLIOTT SMITH (FOR EXPRESS)

For the first time in his young career, John Wall will have to answer for several questionable shots and moves late in a playoff game. Game 3 is Friday, so the microscope won’t be on him long. But how he adjusts to Indiana’s defensive strategy of keeping him off the ball and hesitant to shoot will determine the course of this series in Friday’s pivotal matchup. It’s no secret that these teams prefer to play at two totally different paces. The Wizards will have to figure out how to better determine which shots are best as they rotate through their halfcourt offense, especially during the closing minutes when the temptation is to panic or play hero ball. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

5-for-13 Shooting performance from the field by Indiana’s Paul George in Game 2. In five games against the Wizards this season, George is just 27-for-85 (31.8 percent) and much of that credit goes to Trevor Ariza. The Wizards swingman has harassed George with his length, craftiness slipping around screens and hard-nosed play. ( T WP)

sports Premier League’s Final Weekend

United’s Offense Starting to Click

The Premier League’s final day of the season is Sunday, and NBC is making full use of its family of networks by airing all 10 games simultaneously at 10 a.m. With most teams just playing for pride, here’s a guide to Championship Sunday. MICHAEL E. CUNNIFF (EXPRESS)

ALEX LIVESEY (GETTY IMAGES)

Meaningless fun: Southampton vs. Manchester United (SyFy) Southampton has been one of the most fun teams to watch this season, but this might be the swan song for the Saints, as financial troubles may force them to sell some of their young, homegrown core that has endeared them to Premier League fans this year. Meanwhile, Manchester United and interim playermanager Ryan Giggs will likely feature 18-year-old James Wilson, the next great United academy product, as the team closes out a likely seventh-place finish in its worst-ever Premier League season. With little to play for and talent on both sides, expect a lot of action. Other games: Tottenham vs. Aston Villa (USA), Cardiff City vs. Chelsea (CNBC), Norwich City vs. Arsenal (MSNBC), Hull City vs. Everton (Bravo), Fulham vs. Crystal Palace (E!), Sunderland vs. Swansea (Esquire), West Brom vs. Stoke City (Oxygen)

D.C. United To say goals were hard to come by in 2013 for D.C. United would be an understatement. In 34 games — only three of which were wins — the team scored a total of 22 goals, a dismal average of .65 per game. In 2014, though, United has managed to right the ship offensively. With 12 goals in eight games, United is already more than halfway to its total for last season. The team didn’t score multiple goals in back-to-back games in 2013, but United has already accomplished the feat twice this year. To understand why goals have been so much easier to come by, the place to start is with set pieces. D.C. United leads the league with four goals off corner kicks and has added another off a free kick. New center back Bobby Boswell

JOHN McDONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

For the title: Manchester City vs. West Ham (NBC) and Liverpool vs. Newcastle United (NBCSN) Less than two weeks ago, Liverpool was in the driver’s seat to win its first championship in the Premier League era (since 1992-93), but a loss to Chelsea and a draw to Crystal Palace means Manchester City — led by the unstoppable force that is Yaya Toure — needs just a draw against West Ham to win it all — assuming the Reds don’t score 13 goals to make up the goal differential.

United’s Fabian Espindola leads the team with four goals in eight games this year.

has been United’s main threat off corner kicks, assisting on goals against Chicago and New York, and scoring one himself off a corner against FC Dallas.

The other key to the puzzle has been Fabian Espindola, acquired in the offseason. The Argentine striker’s service off corner kicks has been crucial, and he scored

D.C. United’s free-kick goal against Chicago. Espindola has four goals on the season already. The team’s coleading scorers in 2013 only managed three. Although the surge in goals from corner kicks and free kicks is welcome, it’s not realistic to expect the team to continue scoring more than .5 goals per game on average from set pieces. Eddie Johnson, the marquee offseason addition, has yet to score his first D.C. United goal. If he doesn’t get it Saturday against Philadelphia, it might be a while. He’s expected to receive a call-up to the U.S. national team’s pre-World Cup training camp following the game. If Johnson impresses at the camp, he could be off to Brazil. His teammates, as they’ve been doing so far in 2014, would have to continue picking up the slack. SETH VERTELNEY (FOR E XPRESS)

As CEO and a founding member of Scofflaw’s Den (scofflawsden.com), a cocktail blog-turned-consultancy that offers public and private cocktail classes, among other services, Fawley, 37, had accumulated the spirits over two years, storing them on the counters and in the kitchen cabinets in his Ballston, Va., pad. to improvise a bar in a small space. Whether building shelving, using a bookshelf or finding a bar cart, there are plenty of ways to stylishly stash your liquor.

nextweek

To organize his collection and clear off counter space, Fawley bought a baker’s rack for around $100 from Costco and housed his liquor in a room adjacent to the kitchen. Elfa shelves, purchased for $100-$150 from the Container Store (containerstore.com), now store his bitters in the kitchen, and Fawley keeps bar tools on top of a minifridge, also in the kitchen. The minifridge holds beer, flavored syrups, vermouth and other refrigerated cocktail items. Stemware hangs on the kitchen wall from holders that were gifted by friends. “Don’t be afraid of heights,” he says, referring to shelving use. “Just don’t stash items so high that they are difficult to reach.” Whatever bar setup you choose, if you’re a renter, make sure you can take it with you when you move. The Fawleys, who married in November 2012, moved from their Ballston one-bedroom to a rowhouse they rent in Capitol Hill earlier this year. Despite having more room, Fawley says he recreated the same bar setup.

Cart Creativity Stefanie Gans, 33, decided to look for a bar cart to alleviate the problem of inadequate liquor storage in the two-bedroom apartment she rents with her husband, Bennett Lipscomb, 33, in Alexandria. Gans, the dining editor for Northern Virginia Magazine, found a vintage medical cart for $150 at River Run Antique Mall in Fredericksburg, Va. The store owner at first suggested it could be used as a baby changing table. Gans and her husband don’t have kids, but she says she shows “people pictures of our

bar cart like it’s our child.” Other than cleaning it, Gans didn’t refurbish the boxy white cart. She keeps cocktail stirrers and wine and beer openers in the cart’s three drawers, and the bottom shelf has space to store growlers and taller bottles. Christine DiPietro, 26, also turned to a cart for her bar. Her father, an airline mechanic, has several old airline beverage-service carts. DiPietro, who says she “always wanted one,” had found similar refurbished carts online for $1,000 and more, but didn’t want to pay that price. She final-

ly convinced him to send her one this past Christmas. “He was afraid I was going to throw my socks in there,” says DiPietro, an international development project manager who lives

$2,200 a month. Built in 2007, the 690-square-foot apartment is in the 1800 Wilson condominium, which is located between the Courthouse and Rosslyn Metro stations and near shops and restaurants in Clarendon and Georgetown. There are hardwood floors in the main living area and carpeting in the bedroom. The kitchen has granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. A stacked washer and dryer are in the unit. A parking space is included. The petfriendly building has a gym, lounge and courtyard. The listing agent is Berna Able of Ratterree Realty. The Zillow data assumes that a buyer would have a credit score between 700 and 719, make a 20 percent down payment of $84,000 and take

Home bartenders could invest in an attractive bottle to display their favorite spirit, D.C.based blogger and stylist Morgan Hungerford West suggests. Liqueurs and aperitifs that come in beautiful bottles, such as St. Germain and Lillet, are also good additions, she says. Other essentials: a shaker, stirrer and strainer. Start with a cart and add spirits, bitters and mixers as you go, T. Marshall Fawley of Scofflaw’s Den recommends when he advises clients on how to build bars at home, especially in a small space. Begin with the ingredients for a favorite cocktail. “Learn how to perfect that cocktail and then branch out from that,” he says. Or enlist some help. Alison Beshai, 24, a stylist and personal shopper who shares a twobedroom apartment in Brightwood, bought a bar cart on eBay for around $250. Beshai bought some supplies, including an ice bucket and glassware, but she and her roommate hosted a “stock-the-bar-party” in December in which they asked friends to bring a spirit that started with the first letter of his or her name. in an English basement studio near Eastern Market. DiPietro’s father added trays from other carts to increase storage capacity. She keeps her preferred spirit — bourbon — on the bottom rack along with soda. And there’s plenty of room to accommodate more liquor, mixers and barware. Apartment dwellers in search of a bar cart can find vintage ones online on sites such as eBay, or by scouring flea markets and thrift stores. Stores such as Ikea and Target sell bar carts, too.

Styling Your Bar Once you’ve established a place for your bar, add a dash of personality. D.C.-based artist and stylist Morgan Hungerford West stresses visual organization through the use of trays, for example. She created a bar cart styling tutorial on her creative lifestyle blog, Panda Head (www.pandaheadblog.com). She also emphasizes quirkiness and balancing the hardness of glass and bottles with soft decor, such as flowers or books. To spruce up her cart’s exterior, DiPietro covered the sides with sheets of pink and white patterned paper. Looks aside, the key to having a bar in a small space is efficiency, according to Hungerford West, 33. “Anything you integrate into the bar cart should be something that you actually use,” she says. “At the end of the day it really is all about your personality,” she says. “It’s what you like to drink, it’s what you like to look at.” LEA R ADICK (FOR E XPRES S)

out a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage at the rate of 4.2 percent. Taxes, condo fees and home owners insurance (an estimate based on insurance premium data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners) are included in the calculation, but not the tax benefits of buying (e.g., mortgage interest deductions). This rudimentary calculation is meant to give potential buyers or renters a snapshot of the costs involved with buying or renting a home. It is not meant to be a comprehensive accounting. Anyone considering a home purchase should also take into account the tax benefits available as well as other factors such as how long they intend to live in the home. Lea Michele brings Dorothy to life in “Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return.”

‘Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return’ (PG, 88 MINUTES)

This spinoff of L. Frank Baum’s classic manages to be animated in form but listless in content. The wickedness is disseminated by the Jester (Martin Short), the Wicked Witch’s brother. While its cast features some fantastic vocal talents, including Lea Michele as Dorothy and Bernadette Peters as Glinda, most of the original songs are like singles from subpar Disney movies. JEN CHANEY (TWP)

‘Mom’s Night Out’ (PG, 98 MINUTES)

The story of a harried stay-at-home mother named Allyson (Sarah Drew), “Moms’ Night Out” traffics in the most patronizing images of women, either as addled, neurotic control freaks or haplessly dizzy dames. Directed by Andrew and Jon Erwin, “Moms’ Night Out” possesses the production values and awkward pacing of a lame amateur production with big ambitions. ANN HORNADAY (TWP)

‘Locke’ (R, 85 MINUTES)

The title character of “Locke” commences a 90-minute drive to London, captured in virtually real time over the course of a movie that unfolds like one of the great radio dramas of yore — with the incalculable added value of the great Tom Hardy, here masterfully carrying an engrossing one-man show.”Locke” is such a pure example of cinematic storytelling, that it almost feels abstract. A.H. (TWP)

‘Neighbors,’ is brought down by its array of predictably crude gags and slapstick humor Film Review Seth Rogen and Zac Efron make for amusing alter-egos in “Neighbors,” a shaggy, baggy collegiate comedy that is less a coherent movie than a loosely assembled series of lewd jokes and punishing slapstick routines. It seems like just last year that Rogen was cinema’s reigning arrested adolescent, cavorting with pals James Franco and Jonah Hill in “This Is the End.” In “Neighbors,” Rogen is (almost) all grown up as Mac Radner, who with wife Kelly, played by Rose Byrne, is raising the world’s most awesome, adorable baby in a cozy college-town bungalow. When the house next door is sold to a fraternity, the Radners at first try to make nice with the group’s president, a bronzed, charming cock of the walk named Teddy (Efron), who immediately invites them in for beer and magic mushrooms. It’s all rainbows and unicorns, of course, until the frat’s next rager, which leads the Radners to call the police. What ensues is a picketfence feud of escalating traps and dirty tricks, each more vulgar and explosively violent than the last. Directed with characteristic haphazard style by Nicholas Stoller (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “Get Him to the Greek,” “The Five-Year

Engagement”), “Neighbors” isn’t designed to impress with subtle comedy or clever construction. Rather, it’s a movie of wammies: one-liners, shticks and sight gags that don’t gain in momentum or accrue in meaning. They just happen, quickly, then get out of the way to make room for the next ones. Rogen and Efron both prove to be excellent sports when “Neighbors” exploits their dramatically different physiques, first in an amusing dance-off and in an improbably

rewarding payoff at the end. Until then, however, viewers must slog through all manner of crude, coarse, often lazily choreo-

graphed bits that feel rote and barely warmed-over, from a graphic anatomical stunt performed by the actor Christopher Mintz-Plasse to a dumb scene involving bad Robert DeNiro impressions. Still, “Neighbors” will no doubt reward audiences who demand little more than a few broad, easy laughs to be entertained, which, after all, describes most filmgoers these days. To quote Mac and Kelly in their best undergraduate patois: I’m not judgin’, I’m just sayin’. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Quentin Calls It Quits: Quentin Tarantino has withdrawn his lawsuit against Gawker Media, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The director sued Gawker in January for posting a link to the leaked script for his next film, “The Hateful Eight.” Tarantino withdrew the suit without prejudice, meaning he could file again. Though Tarantino initially said he would not release the film, he announced last month he was working on a second draft of the script. (E XPRESS)

“A LIGHTHEARTED

DEPICTION OF LIFE AFTER 60...’’ FANNY ARDANT IS ‘‘LUMINOUS.”

Between the Lines Film Early in the period drama “Belle,” out Friday, a little girl — who has recently lost her black mother and has only just met her white father — stands in a giant hall and looks at a painting. It’s the only painting in sight that includes another person of color, a little boy. The boy stares up adoringly at the white man who occupies the center frame. It’s the kind of painting that British director Amma Asante had seen long before she began work on the movie. “My husband had taken me to an art exhibit in Amsterdam called ‘Black Is Beautiful,’ which was about how black people appeared in European art from the 14th century onward,” Asante says. “And in every one, they were an accessory, a pet, there to express the status of the main protagonist. They were always lower down, never looking at the painter — they’d be reaching up to draw your eye to that person. It was like how people were painted with their hunting dogs, their

horses, that kind of thing.” A year later, Damian Jones, one of “Belle’s” producers, sent Asante a postcard of a very different painting, of Dido Elizabeth Belle (the real-life counterpart of the movie’s central character) and her cousin Elizabeth — a 1779 artwork that occupies an incredibly important space in the film. “Immediately I was able to see this painting of Dido and Elizabeth was different. Dido is higher, she’s looking out directly, Elizabeth’s hand is touching Dido, guiding your eye to Dido,” she says. “In creating the film, what I wanted to do was bring you my journey, so you understand why the painting is unique.” In the film, Dido (Gugu MbathaRaw) is raised by her uncle and aunt (Tom Wilkinson and Emily

Watson) after her naval officer father heads to sea. She gets many of the advantages entitled to her as a member of the aristocracy, but is denied many of them because of the color of her skin (she eats with the family unless there are guests because her presence at the table might offend some of them). As with all women of her time and class, it’s understood that her ultimate goal is to get married, but it’s also understood that her ethnicity essentially makes this impossible. There aren’t any rules for how Dido is supposed to fit in, and that’s both confining and freeing, Asante says. “I wanted to ask the question, ‘Who defines us — society or ourselves?’ ” Asante says. “If society simply sees her as the child of a slave but she feels like the child of an aristocrat, what is the most important predictor of her success?” For Asante, that predictor is Dido herself, and it’s her journey toward embracing her unique identity that is the main thrust of the film. “At the end, she can see [she’s a] child of a slave, a child of an aristocrat, all these things,” Asante says. “And ultimately she sees herself as someone who is loved.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (E XPRESS)

Now I’m Spittin’ Mad ‘Fed Up’ (PG) Director: Stephanie Soechtig In a Nutshell: An exposé on the food industry’s and the U.S. government’s alleged efforts to dupe Americans about the food they eat.

RADIUS-TWC

I leave a lot of documentaries with the sensation that I can’t do anything about anything. Food insecurity, water shortages, melting polar ice caps, bullying: All the drops at my disposal couldn’t fill that bucket. That wasn’t the case with “Fed Up,” out Friday. I left the screening not only angry, but with a plan. I’m 10 pounds heavier than it says on my driver’s license, 20 more than is healthy and 30 more than I’d like to be. There’s no deep reason why the weight crept on, except that I believe the best way to shut sad up is to shove pasta and wine down its

“Fed Up” follows children (like Brady, above) as they struggle to lose weight.

throat. I run often (and slowly), walk everywhere I can, and, I thought, ate pretty well. I’d have a Greek yogurt for breakfast and a Subway veggie sandwich and Baked Lays for lunch, and I cook every night, usually pretty healthy stuff. And wine,

you know, for antioxidants. So why was the weight coming off excruciatingly slowly, if at all? Enter “Fed Up.” This is more than a film about why Americans are fat and unhealthy; it goes into that, but it also draws absolutely damning connections between the food lobby and the government. I’ve been buying into messages that have lied their way right onto my thighs. I live in a post-Snowden world, so I’m no longer shocked when it comes out that my government is lying to me. What made me angry was how complacent and complicit the government is when it comes to companies encouraging me to eat food that I believe is healthy but is, in fact, making me sick. After seeing “Fed Up,” I stopped eating processed foods and refined sugars immediately. (I kept wine. For antioxidants.)

For two days I had headaches and fatigue, and I was hungry and less than pleasant to live or work with. Once I got past that, I noticed I was eating a lot less overall. I slept better and woke up more rested. I was more alert at Skittles o’clock in the afternoon. After 10 days I relaxed the restrictions from dinner Friday until dinner Saturday as kind of my own sugar Sabbath, but getting back on the wagon wasn’t that tough. All I had to do when I looked at the leftover Easter jellybeans was remember how “Fed Up” made me feel: lied to, manipulated and angry. It’s been two weeks since I saw the film and I’ve lost 6 pounds. I didn’t up my exercise or cut back that much on wine (You need it. For antioxidants.). It seems that all I needed to get a little healthier was to get a lot angrier.

In this new episode, Jackson works with Sheri, Darin and Littlez — a small cat with a big vicious streak who regularly sends them to urgent care and keeps them from having friends over. Viewers will also meet Whisky, who thinks outside the box — and not in a good way.

This new four-hour adaptation of the 1968 horror film stars Zoe Saldana and Patrick J. Adams. This one moves the action from New York to Paris, but the plotline — young wife impregnated with Satan’s spawn — remains the same. The conclusion airs on Thursday.

Eva Green, left, stars in this very adult new horror series, in which the monsters haunting the streets of Victorian London are actual supernatural beings from the pages of horror stories: Frankenstein’s creature, Dorian Gray and assorted demons.

Sweets for the Sophisticated

DEAR MANOLO

IF COOKIE MONSTER ever truly

grew up, his drug of choice would likely be Lark Fine Foods’ new Polenta Pennies ($8.25, Dean & DeLuca, 3276 M St. NW; 202342-2500). That’s because the bitesized treats — flavored with corn mush, lemon and golden raisins — aren’t too sugary. Try them with a fullbodied white wine or some goat cheese, but maybe not Cookie’s quaff (a jumbo glass of milk).

Specialties Delivery

An Age-Old Debate

FED UP WITH YOUR LOCAL CSA? (How is one person

supposed to consume so many beets?!) Hatchery delivers a monthly offering of five to six sample-sized products sourced from independent food artisans ($20 a month including shipping, hatcherybox.com). Treats may include Better Off Spreads’ spicy peanut butter, Big Island Bees’ organic honey and Potlicker Kitchen’s apricot and beer jelly. The tasting box also comes with a guide on how to best enjoy your new goodies as well as information about their producers.

IN “X VS. Y: A Culture War, a Love Story,” sisters Eve and Lenora Epstein (who grew up 14 years apart) compare notes on the music, movies, fashion and technology from their youth ($19, Abrams Image). Though there’s a lot the sibs don’t always understand about each other (Gen X-ers wrote their papers on typewriters?!) they manage to find common ground on a few things, including Madonna’s music, Judy Bloom’s books and “My So-Called Life” re-runs.

Get Carded

A Shoe-In

SUNDAY IS MOTHER’S DAY.

WHITE COTTON LACES?

Though we’re sure we’re not the first to tell you that. (Thanks for the fifth reminder, Mom.) Grey Moggie Press has you covered with clever-yet-touching greeting cards for the occasion ($5, available at local Ace Hardware stores and Eastern Market). Favorites include “Mom, when I was younger I thought you were the smartest woman in the world. I still do” and “Mom, you were my first best friend.”

Surely your fresh kicks deserve something a little less boring, like U-Laces ($3.50 a pack, u-lace.com). Available in 50 different shades like neon yellow and pastel blue, the elastic thingamabobs hold your sneakers together in a number of creative ways. Mix and match them for a rainbow effect (shown) or weave them into a crisscross pattern. The best part? No tying.

Grab Bag is gathered and reviewed by Jennifer Barger and Holley Simmons. Find more food, fashion, beauty and home goods at readexpress.com/grabbag.

ANSWERS FROM THE SHOE BLOGGER

My husband’s boss, who is not a warm and fuzzy type, invited us to spend Memorial Day at his family’s summer home in Maine. It’s really important that I make a good impression, but I don’t know what to wear. I’m not preppy in the least, so I’m stumped. Please help. —MEGHAN

Manolo says ahhh, the Day of Memorializing, it is the traditional beginning of the crazy, hazy, lazy, days of the summer, when the WASPs return to the Bar Harbor, to enjoy the sailing of cranky boats, late morning gin-and-tonics, and the repressed, Cheever-esque family dramas. Do no worry if the boss of your husband is not the warmly emotive

person, he will loosen up out on the water. It is the wife and the mother of the boss, for whom you must be on your guard. These thin-lipped ladies can insult you in ways you will not recognize or understand until many, many years later. “You know how they are at Miss Porter’s, don’t you darling? No? Well where did you prep? … Oh … I’m sure it’s very nice at Herndon High? Were you on the heavy eights crew? No! Well you certainly have an ‘athlete’s’ build.” Do not worry overly much about the opinion of these ladies. Your husband’s boss (whom the Manolo thinks of as Edward T. “Biff” Boddlington IV) will go out of his way to ignore anything they say. Here is the Trillby driving moccasin from the Cole Haan in the sandstone color ($150, zappos.com). Ask the Manolo a question at manolo@shoeblogs.com. Visit the Manolo at shoeblogs.com.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’re determined to follow a certain course of action, despite the reservations of one who has been there before. Employ caution. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’ll want to make time to help a family member before setting off on your own to achieve something of which he or she is unaware. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’ll be grateful for the assistance of someone who is doing it because it’s the right thing, not because he or she will get any reward. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’re likely to find yourself connecting with many who share certain ambitions and interests, but you may still feel set apart. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) What qualifies you for a current endeavor is not necessarily your expertise, but that intangible something that no one else seems to have.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) It’s time to put one foot in front of the other and get moving toward that important new goal. There’s no point in talking about it further.
