Unexpected Working Vacation Most thieves would balk at stealing from the NYPD baseball team, but the squad has been forced to cancel a tournament game after someone made off with its jerseys, gloves and bats last week. The New York Post reports the team composed of New York City police officers was at a tournament in Texas when about $15,000 worth of stuff was stolen from a team minivan. Team manager Jose Vasquez told the Post that the police officers spent the morning filling out police reports instead of playing. (AP) SHOCKERS

New Jersey Frat Kids Thought Whale Was From New York A dead Minke whale that washed ashore in New Jersey suffered some further indignity: someone tagged it with graffiti. The letters appeared to be Tau Epsilon Phi, a fraternity that has chapters at several local schools. (AP)

Young Blood Renews Elderly Mice Experiments able to reverse the effects of aging in older rodents Washington The rodent fountain of youth may not be filled with water, but with blood. A trio of new studies has discovered that the blood of young mice appears to reverse some of the effects of aging when put into the circulatory systems of elderly mice. After combining the blood circulations of two mice by conjoining them — one old, the other young — researchers found dramatic improvements in the older mouse’s muscle and brain. After four weeks, stem cells in both those areas got

Next Step: Human Studies Neuroscientist Tony Wyss-Coray of Stanford said he hopes to dive into human studies right off the bat. His new startup company Alkahest is planning the first young-blood clinical trial at Stanford later this year. Patients with Alzheimer’s disease will be given young blood, with researchers measuring their cognitive condition before and after. “Right now we can’t do anything for Alzheimer’s patients, and this seems so easy and simple,” Wyss-Coray said. a boost of activity and were better able to produce new neurons and muscle tissue. They later discovered that injections of a special protein found abundantly in young blood — or even transfusions of whole young blood — gives the same advantages as sharing a blood supply. Old mice who were injected with the protein or who received a blood

transfusion navigated mazes faster and ran longer on treadmills. They easily outperformed their control peers, who were given only saline. But for the young mice, getting old blood was a setback. When conjoined to an older mouse, the creation of new cells in the young mouse slowed down. Old blood seemed to cause premature aging. Two of the studies, both pub-

Providence, R.I. A platform collapsed during an aerial hair-hanging stunt at a circus performance Sunday, sending eight acrobats plummeting to the ground. Nine performers were seriously injured in the fall, including a dancer below, while an unknown number suffered less serious injuries. The accident was reported about 45 minutes into the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus’

11 a.m. Legends show at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence. Stephen Payne, a spokesman for Feld Entertainment, the parent company of Ringling Bros., said the accident happened during an act in which eight performers hang “like a human chandelier” using their hair. He said the metal-frame apparatus from which the performers were hanging came free from the metal truss it was connected to. The eight women fell 25 to 40 feet. (AP)

Washington Reacts to Benghazi Probe BIG GULP

‘Power’ to the People Coca-Cola is dropping a controversial ingredient — brominated vegetable oil — from its Powerade sports drink after it was the target of a petition by a Mississippi teen, who questioned why it was being used in a drink marketed toward health-conscious athletes. The petition on Change.org noted that the ingredient is linked to a flame retardant. (AP)

House Speaker John Boehner said Friday that he would create a committee to investigate the Benghazi attack, providing Republicans with a high-profile forum to target the Obama administration’s credibility ahead of crucial midterm elections. Boehner said U.S. officials misled the American people after the Sept. 11, 2012, assault on the U.S. diplomatic outpost in Libya that killed four Americans. He said emails released last week show that the White House withheld documents from investigators and he asked, “What else about Benghazi is the Obama administration still hiding?” The Sunday talk shows offered many opinions on the subject. Odessa, Ukraine Hundreds of pro-Russian demonstrators stormed police headquarters in Odessa on Sunday and won the release of 67 people detained after deadly clashes in the Ukrainian port city. Hundreds of people gathered outside the station, chanting “freedom for Odessa’s heroes” and “Odessa rise up,” according to reporters on the scene. Some wore masks and carried sticks and shields, beating the metal door of the police station until police gave in and released some of the prisoners, sparking cheers and chants of “Odessa is a

Very often the people we call public servants are invisible to the people they serve. Most Americans probably will never know the air traffic controllers who safely guide their airplane’s takeoff and landing, or the food inspectors who test fresh fruits and meats for harmful bacteria. When we recognize the deserving soldiers who fight for our freedoms, let us also think about the civilian employees working behind the scenes to help them complete their missions and return home safely. Throughout the week of May 4–10, we celebrate Public Service Recognition Week to publicly honor all the men and women who dedicate their careers—and sometime their lives—to keep others safe and provide the common needs of our society. We call attention to the unrecognized public servants who help make life better in our communities and around the world. The women and men who work in government have answered a call to serve our country and to serve you and me. Please join us in saying thank you for their service.

A Note of Caution for Cyclists National Bike Safety Month arrives with the spring weather Washington Like most national statistics, the raw number — 4,734 dead — conveys none of the emotion: the grief of those who knew the bicyclist or the remorse of the driver in the collision. Closer to home, however, the number of bicyclists killed in a year and the occasional tensions between drivers and cyclists becomes far more personal. According to AAA, at least eight cyclists were killed in the D.C. region in 2013, and many

more injured by collisions with cars. Bike riders were out by the thousands throughout the area this weekend, heralding the arrival of spring that coincides with National Bike Safety Month. “National Bike Safety Month is a reminder to share the road with cyclists, who are often our neighbors and also other drivers,” said John Townsend of AAA Mid Atlantic. “Taking the time to slow down for a cyclist helps ensure that everyone makes it home safely.” The District Department of Public Works issued 707 tickets in the 2013 fiscal year for stopping or standing in a bike lane, 1,617 tickets in 2012 and 1,079 tickets in 2011.

4.1%

The proportion of workers in D.C. who biked to work in 2012, according to the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. That amounts to about 13,500 people. The growing network of bike lanes, the Capital Bikeshare rental program and outreach from cycling groups have encouraged more people to commute by bike. More than 14,000 local commuters participated in last year’s Bike to Work day. The event will be held on May 16 this year. (T WP)

The Department of Transportation and the police department also issue tickets for the offense. With good weather forecast for most of this week, the number of people who commuted by bike through the winter will be bolstered by thousands who waited for more fair weather, Townsend said. They should take cautions to be safe. D.C. recorded close to 580 crashes involving cyclists in 2012. Data compiled by AAA indicate that eight bicyclists were killed on area roadways in 2013. (Federal figures on traffic fatalities are being tallied, with a release date expected later this year.) ASHLEY HALSEY III (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Which Way Will the Wind Blow? O’Malley faces a tough choice over offshore turbines Annapolis For Somerset County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, a proposed wind farm with 25 towering turbines would mean hundreds of construction jobs. But just across the Chesapeake Bay is the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, home to a highly sensitive radar system that tests the stealthiness of fighter jets — and would be compromised by towering, whirling turbines. After more than two years of meetings with military leaders, the

wind farm developers thought they had reached a compromise: turn the turbines off during test flights. They didn’t expect that U.S. House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer and a coalition of Southern Maryland lawmakers would circumvent the process, O’Malley worried the military wasn’t doing enough to protect its “Pax River” assets. In the final days of the recently concluded General Assembly session, lawmakers voted to delay all wind projects of a certain height within 46 miles of the base until

Md. Dealer Quickly Backs Away From Smart Gun Rockville A Rockville gun store owner who said he would sell the nation’s first smart gun — even after a California gun store removed the weapon from its shelves to placate angry gun-rights activists — backed down late Thursday night after enduring a day of protests and death threats. Andy Raymond, the co-owner of Engage Armament, had said earlier this week that offering the Armatix iP1 handgun was a “really tough

decision” after what happened to the Oak Tree Gun Club near Los Angeles. Oak Tree was lambasted by gun owners and National Rifle Association members who fear the new technology will be mandated. Electronic chips in the gun communicate with a watch, and it cannot be fired without the watch. “If the same reaction happens here, we’ll be out of business,” Raymond had said in an interview. He had said he was willing to risk selling the gun because Maryland, with its

strict gun-control laws, “has already essentially put us out of business.” But after hundreds of protests on his store’s Facebook page and online forums — a repeat of what Oak Tree faced — Raymond released a long video on the Facebook page saying he had received death threats and would not sell the gun. He apologized and took responsibility for the decision. He had sold none of the smart guns and would not, he said. MICH A EL S. RO SEN WA L D (THE WASHINGTON POST )

O’Malley’s reputation as a dedicated environmentalist as he contemplates a run for the White House. “You’ve shown national caliber leadership in getting policies in place,” Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune wrote in an April 11 letter, “but without construction of actual projects, Maryland residents won’t get the benefits they deserve.” But a veto would likely anger Hoyer, whom the governor considers an important political ally, as well as the progressive state lawmakers who have pushed through nearly all of O’Malley’s legislative priorities. Sen. Thomas Middleton said: “I would be very disappointed … The legislature spoke.” JENNA JOHNSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Yes, they’re both delicious, but there’s another reason Neil, the general manager of El Chucho in Columbia Heights, is pushing these two cocktails for your Cinco de Mayo enjoyment: they’re the restaurant’s only margaritas that don’t include fresh-squeezed lime juice. El Chucho is one of thousands of establishments from coast to coast that has fallen victim to the Great Green Citrus Crisis of 2014 — a severe shortage of limes that has sent prices skyrocketing. “The cost of limes for us has pretty much gone up 300 percent,” said Neil, who estimates El Chucho

goes through 32,000 cases a year. “You used to be able to buy a case of limes for $25, and now it’s $168 a case. Right now that breaks down to $1 a lime.” The cost might not seem like that big of a deal until one realizes that limes are squeezed into every margarita and mojito. Lime-less guacamole is practically sacrilegious. So far, the price spike doesn’t seem to have been passed on widely to consumers, according to industry officials. “We are affected by [the shortage], but we’re not here to gouge the customers,” Neil said. But people are beginning to notice it in other ways. Alaska Airlines stopped putting limes in in-flight beverages a couple of weeks ago. A Southern California restaurateur said he is offering a

free appetizer to any customer who brings in a bag of limes from their backyard tree. The Arizona Republic reports that a Phoenix restaurant group is offering a free drink to anyone who brings in 5 pounds of limes. Which raises the question, if limes grow on backyard trees in Los Angeles and Phoenix, why are they so expensive? Because they don’t really grow well enough in most of the U.S. to be produced commercially, says Jonathan Crane, a tropical fruit crop specialist at the University of Florida. In most of California, the weather isn’t warm or humid enough to produce commercial quality limes. Until 2001, Crane said, Florida produced half of all the limes consumed in the United States. But then a devastating citrus canker outbreak led officials to order almost all of Florida’s lime groves destroyed. The industry never recovered. Mexico now produces more than

When Life Doesn’t Give You Limes … Due to the shortage, Andrea Neil says D.C.’s El Chucho has started asking guests if they want a lime versus automatically serving them. It’s proven successful in at least one instance. Neil said she recently asked a woman if she wanted a lime wedge with her drink. “She told me, ‘No, I won’t take one because I own a restaurant and know how much they cost right now.’ Turns out she ran a Caribbean restaurant in Milwaukee, so people everywhere are feeling it.” (E XPRESS)

Once thought of as just a simple garnish, the lime wedge has become a hot commodity amid a shortage and skyrocketing prices.

90 percent of the limes consumed in the United States. And the country’s crop was hit by myriad problems. Last winter’s storms, which triggered major floods across western Mexico, destroyed crops, and a plant disease that struck the state of Colima damaged still more. The Knights Templar drug cartel used to jack up prices by disrupting deliveries and shaking down farmers in Michoacan state, but that problem has declined in importance following an offensive this year by federal forces and vigilantes. Still, a Mexican official said last month the cartel extorts as much as $1.4 million a week from legitimate businesses, mainly lime and avocado growers. As the industry waits for the summer crop to lower prices, some bars are pulling lime drinks off their happy hour menus. Others are substituting lemons or oranges. That’s not an option at El Coyote, a popular Mexican eatery in Los Angeles. “People want to see a lime in their margarita, and rightfully so,” said manager Wayne Christoffersen. “A margarita’s not a margarita without the lime.” So until the spike ends, restaurants across the country are making do. Neil, of El Chucho, said, “We’re just trying our best to make sure none of them go to waste.” HOLLEY SIMMONS (E XPRESS/AP)

Bradley Beal vs. Lance Stephenson Stephenson has the ability to change the game with his driving and slashing style. Beal will face one of his bigger defensive challenges in trying to slow the Pacers guard, while also having to maintain his offensive presence.

Nene vs. David West Aside from his suspension, Nene was a key component in the Wizards’ firstround win. He’ll face off against one of the Pacers’ few consistent scoring threats, and one who will make Nene work harder than Chicago’s Joakim Noah away from the basket. (E.S)

Wizards are surging, while Pacers stumble into East semifinals

Season Rewind: Wizards vs. Pacers Nov. 29: Pacers 93, Wizards 73 Nene and Bradley Beal missed this first meeting between the teams, and the Wizards struggled to score, tallying zero fast-break points as Paul George led the Pacers to an easy win.

Wizards When the Indiana Pacers destroyed the Wizards 93-66 on Jan. 10, both teams’ narratives seemed set. The Pacers improved to 29-7 with the win and seemed like a real threat to unseat Miami’s reign in the Eastern Conference. The Wizards fell to 16-18 and looked like a team still searching for an identity.

Marcin Gortat vs. Roy Hibbert The Pacers’ big man has fallen apart down the stretch, and it will be critical for Gortat to keep Hibbert’s confidence down by preventing him from deciding play in the paint on either end of the floor.

John Wall, left, and the Wizards lost two of three games vs. the Pacers this year.

But what a difference a few months make. The Wizards come steamrolling into the Eastern Conference semifinals off an impressive five-game knockout of Chicago, capping a solid late-season finish. Meanwhile, the Pacers barely hung on to beat eighthseeded Atlanta after a tumultuous final month of the regular season. Even w it hout home-cour t advantage, the Wizards appear to

be the better team. “People are going to start jumping on your bandwagon, giving you praise and saying, ‘You’re capable of making it far,’ but we have to stick together and just focus on what we need to do in winning games,” guard Bradley Beal said. “We can’t really focus on the media and the outside people telling us how great we are. That’s the last

thing we need.” The Wizards spent much of the past week preparing for both Atlanta and Indiana, but now that they know the Pacers are the opponent, they are aware of the challenges of stopping them. “Indiana is a power team,” coach Randy Wittman said. “They are a real physical team.” For several of the Wizards, the

Playoff Pressure Doesn’t Faze Young Beal Wizards Bradley Beal is so mature and composed on the court, some of the guard’s teammates didn’t even realize how precocious the Wizards’ second-year player actually is. “I didn’t know Brad was that young,” forward Drew Gooden said. “I thought he was 22, 23. I call him ‘Young Pro.’ The sky is the limit for Bradley the way he pushes the game.” The 20-year-old shooting guard has come into his own during his second year on the Wizards, overcoming an injury-plagued rookie season to blossom in the playoffs.

“I haven’t really bought into this being my coming out,” Beal said. “I’m just focused on what I need to do and what this team needs to do to move forward.” Against the Bulls, Beal averaged 19.8 points, 4.2 assists and 4.6 rebounds — numbers that were all up from his impressive regularseason totals — and his clutch play in Game 2 helped swing the series in Washington’s favor. “Brad’s made a good step this year,” coach Randy Wittman said. “Basically, as a rookie, you never know what you’re going to get out of a 19-year-old kid coming into this league. He handled that as well as

Their next challenge is continuing to excel as the stakes get higher. “We just love to win,” Beal said. “Me and John, we take it personally every single night against the matchups that we have. Nets forward Paul Pierce celebrates after Brooklyn’s win over Toronto on Sunday.

Pierce’s Block Keys Nets’ Game 7 Win Brooklyn now gets a shot at Miami after taking down Toronto NBA Paul Pierce blocked Kyle Lowry’s shot from the lane on the final play of the game, and the Brooklyn Nets held off the Toronto Raptors 104-103 in Game 7 on Sunday to advance to the second round of the playoffs. Leading by one point, Brooklyn used its final timeout after failing to inbound the ball. On the second opportunity, Shaun Livingston tried a lob pass to Pierce, but Terrence Ross got a hand on the ball and then knocked it off Pierce and out of bounds for a turnover. Toronto used a timeout and gave the ball to Lowry, whose driving shot was blocked by Pierce as time expired. Joe Johnson scored 13 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Nets.

In Brief FILM

The royal family of Monaco has formally denounced the Grace Kelly biopic “Grace of Monaco” just a week before it is set to open the Cannes Film Festival. People magazine reports the family released a statement saying the film’s trailer “appears to be a farce and confirms the totally fictional nature of this film.” The release date for the film, which stars Nicole Kidman, has been pushed back due to a dispute between its director, Olivier Dahan, and its distributor, the Weinstein Company. (E XPRESS)

Monaco Royals Denounce Biopic ‘Grace of Monaco’

From left, William Devane, Kim Raver, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Yvonne Strahovski, Kiefer Sutherland and Benjamin Bratt all turn out for “24: Live Another Day.”

ACCOLADES

‘Orange’ Wins Top Honor at GLAAD Media Awards The Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black” was named outstanding comedy series at the GLAAD Media Awards ceremony on Saturday. George Takei received the Vito Russo award, for an openly gay media professional who promotes equality. Other winners Saturday included the film “Philomena” and Oprah Winfrey’s interview with openly gay basketball player Jason Collins. (EXPRESS)

Hearsay

“I think we really want to find interesting people that no one has seen before. I don’t think I can say Audra McDonald will play Cady.” — TINA FE Y, TELL-

Running Out the Clock ‘24’ is back, but its relentless pacing is already wearing thin TV Review Jack Bauer, the rogue counterterrorism agent who makes a rather wan and uneventful return tonight in Fox’s “24: Live Another Day,” nevertheless remains a person of interest in the fictional stories we tell about our shared anxieties regarding terrorism, war and personal safety. Jack (Kiefer Sutherland, in the role he was born to play) and “24” were the sensation of the BushCheney years, a successful fantasy story that extolled the (still ambivalent) benefits of covert counterintelligence, domestic spying and

arbitrary acts of torture. Sutherland’s steely, singularly focused Jack was the ideal 9/11-era protagonist, more so when he was efficiently stripped of emotional attachments so as to devote himself fully to “24’s” subsequent panic attacks over new threats. Jack Bauer’s days wore on, and his paranoia wore thin. The series was initially made up of eight separate 24-hour days, each transpiring in a single season, clocked in real time, although calling it “real time” was just one part of “24’s” elastic regard for believability. “24: Live Another Day,” is billed as a work of “event television,” back for 12 one-hour episodes instead of the (duh) 24 episodes that seemed inviolable to the format. Now, in the perfect expression of our cul-

ture’s hostility to commitment, even poor “24” has to do its job in half the time, by showing us only the hours that matter. We reunite with Jack, now an international fugitive, on a dreary day in London, 11 a.m., with the local CIA office (headed by Steven Navarro, played by Benjamin Bratt) on full security alert because U.S. President James Heller (William Devane) is paying an official visit to the British prime minister (Stephen Fry) and Parliament to defend the controversial use of American drone bombers based on British soil.

‘24’ eschews the idea of a resting pulse. It’s a drug habit we can’t kick.

The CIA captures Jack in a raid on an abandoned warehouse. Only one freethinking agent (Yvonne Strahovski as Kate Morgan) realizes that Jack probably intended to get captured in order to infiltrate the office, so that he can … Well, from here, let’s just say that “24” moves according to its own familiar beat. But this time it is far less potent. At 47, Sutherland wears Jack’s evident fatigue (and extra wrinkles) like a badge, even though the script never gives him much to work with in the way of emotion or depth. In the long run, Jack’s unyielding race to prevent disaster mostly just prevented viewers from getting attached to him. In that very crucial regard, it’s hard to welcome back a man you don’t really know. HANK STEUVER (THE WASHINGTON POST )

TODAY, 10 P.M.

Find more events for your weekend in Thursday’s Weekend Pass.

TODAY

‘Louie’ (FX) It’s no secret that comedian Louis C.K. draws from his own life for the plot of “Louie.” That probably includes tonight’s season four premiere, in which Louie has yet another awkward romantic encounter and performs at a Hamptons benefit.

SAVOR Week

On “Midnight Sun,” Sean Lennon’s latest album with Charlotte Kemp Muhl under the name Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Lennon takes psychedelic influences from his dad, John Lennon. Expect a sound somewhere between “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and Dirty Projectors when the band hits D.C. today. U Street Music Hall,

Craft beer aficionados who weren’t able to snag tickets to this weekend’s soldout Savor craft beer festival needn’t feel left out. With more than 70 breweries in town, there are dozens of unofficial, SAVOR-adjacent tastings, dinners and tap takeovers to keep you occupied all week. Here are three not to miss.

TUESDAY, 9 P.M.

‘New Girl’ (FOX) It’s been quite a season for Jess. She got together, then broke up with Nick, she crashed a party at Prince’s house, and now, in the season finale, she and Nick decide to take a cruise they booked while they were still together, and they invite the whole gang to come along. Oscar Nunez (yes, the guy from “The Office”) guest stars.

The website said that the pop star provided the song’s tagline, “The cold never bothered me anyway.” The real songwriters, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, denied the report Friday on Twitter.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You know that a recent fling was only for the fun of it, but you may have trouble convincing someone else of that truth. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Not everyone agrees with your approach, but what you are trying to do is likely to capture everyone’s imagination. You’ll win support. CANCER (June 21-July 22) The time has come for you to accept what another is doing, or stand up and object to it. Whatever happens, you’ll be affected in many ways. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Others are going to be talking about you, so why not make sure that they’re not doing so behind your back?

Friday’s Solution

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You’re in no mood to be taken for granted. It may be time to assert yourself in a new way. A loved one gives you a leg up. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) What happens suddenly will have a major impact on you, and require you to change your plans. You may feel you are on shaky ground. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) A loved one comes to you with a proposition, and it’s something that doesn’t come as a complete surprise. Why not give it a try? SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may feel as though you are trying to keep too many things going at once, but you do have a talent for such multitasking.
