Zoo animals get to be the ones oohing and aahing for a change

The last known male northern white rhino in the world has joined Tinder, as experts at his home in Kenya try to breed him to keep his species alive. “I don’t mean to be too forward, but the fate of the species literally depends on me,” says the profile for Sudan, 43. He and his last two female companions can’t breed naturally; the issues include old age. Sudan’s presence on the dating app aims to raise money for research into breeding methods. (AP)

A woman whose baby was due mid-May went into labor Sunday and gave birth at a zoo in Omaha, Neb. Kymica Hubbard, 24, said the birth took just two minutes from the time her water broke. Her husband, Justin, caught the baby girl and wrapped her in a sweater as zoo visitors gathered around. Drea weighed 5 pounds, 5 ounces. The zoo’s nurse, Krystal Hartmann, said Drea is the first human baby she’s seen delivered at the zoo. (AP)

Conservation center in Bowie, Md., houses artifacts from survivors

School pranks are starting to branch out CAROLYN KASTER (AP)

BOWIE, MD. The small wicker doll chair was a modest toy, but it meant the world to Louise Lawrence-Israels. A gift for her second birthday, it was the only toy she possessed during the approximately three years she spent hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam, just five blocks from the house where Anne Frank wrote in her diary. The chair is one of thousands of artifacts housed in the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s new conservation and research center, which opened Monday on the annual memorial day for the 6 million Jews killed by Nazi Germany during World War II. “It was a big thing for me to actually give the chair, because it was a significant thing,” said Lawrence-Israels, 75, one of about two dozen Holocaust survivors who attended the opening. “A lot of people can look at it and see how it was for a little child in hiding.”

CENTREVILLE, MD.

Police in Queen Anne’s County, Md., said someone planted a tree next to the pitcher’s mound of a high school baseball field — and scratched “Earth Day 2017” in the dirt — in what may have been a senior prank. Authorities said the incident was noticed Saturday at Queen Anne’s County High School in Centreville. They said the tree sapling still had a price tag ($139.99) attached. Police, who initially estimated the damage at $2,000, said repairs have been made.(AP)

Laura Seylar, registrar of Collections Management, slides open an art rack at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s research center in Bowie, Md.

The David and Fela Shapell Family Collections, Conservation and Research Center in Bowie is a state-of-the-art facility with 103,000 square feet and room for expansion. The center houses thousands of items in eight climate-controlled vaults in a building designed to withstand tornadoes and hurricanes. Its collection includes everyday objects, from children’s toys and clothes to sewing machines used in concentration camps.

Survivors say the center’s holdings are critical to preserving the reality of the Holocaust. “This is the only evidence that we leave behind, and with the climate today, it’s important that people see that this was real,” Lawrence-Israels said. Scholars and researchers will have access to materials in the facility. A reading room is scheduled to open in the next year. The museum also is in the process of making documents and images available online. BRIAN WITTE (AP)

A magician has been reunited with his pet bird after a Fairfax County officer rescued it. Police said they recently returned Sunny the cockatoo to Springfield magician Edgar Jorge Vidaurre. Officer Mike Thompson found the yellowcrested bright white bird 12 feet up in a tree. Thompson said he had to talk Sunny down, as the 17-year-old bird’s wings had been clipped after previous antics. local City is better positioned to avoid fallout than it was for 2013 standoff THE DISTRICT The daily work of local government — trash pickup, teaching in public schools and more — will continue without a hitch in the nation’s capital if the federal government shuts down this week before a spending bill can get through Congress and be signed by President Trump, D.C. officials said. Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice Kevin Donahue said D.C. would not be forced to repeat the scramble to continue operating that ensued in 2013, when the federal government shut down for 16 days after conservative

Republicans refused to fund the government unless the Affordable Care Act was gutted. The shutdown threatened the District, whose budget is tied to that of the federal government. Then-Mayor Vincent Gray managed to keep the city open by dipping into budget reserves and designating every one of its tens of thousands of employees as “essential to the protection of public safety, health and property.” Since then, however, D.C. has adopted a new interpretation of its budget autonomy — the ability to raise and spend local funds without Congressional approval — and Congress has decided that the District’s budget should remain in effect during any standoffs over federal spending on Capitol Hill.

said Tuesday. “We believe, in the event of a shutdown, that there will be no effect on city services, nor will we need to take the extraordinary step of declaring all employees essential.” That doesn’t mean District residents won’t notice effects if the federal government were to grind to a halt. Trash collection and maintenance for federal landmarks like the National Mall could cease during a shutdown. Donahue said smaller, federally controlled parks throughout the city — such as Franklin Square downtown — could also go untended, perhaps prompting extra effort from the city’s Department of Public Works. local MONTGOMERY COUNTY The shooting spree — at least 21 rounds fired in different parking lots — had left three dead and three injured, and prompted a massive manhunt in Maryland. It was noon on a Friday in May last year, and the suspect, Eulalio “Leo” Tordil, then 62 and a career law enforcement officer, had been sought by police for 20 hours. In his rented Hyundai Elantra, Tordil allegedly had a Glock .40-caliber handgun, clothes, $1,802 in cash and a journal with incriminating entries. Hoping to duck out of sight,

Tordil slipped into a Boston Market, police said. But a short time later, he was under arrest. On Tuesday, Tordil pleaded guilty in the jolting, high-profile case, which terrorized residents in two counties. Tordil, now 63, pleaded guilty in Montgomery County Circuit Court to two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder for shooting strangers who stood between him and continued flight. Tordil also faces a charge of first-degree murder — for the killing of his estranged wife, Gladys

They reached this conclusion after viewing two classified memos and a disclosure form in a private briefing Tuesday. “Personally, I see no evidence or no data to support the notion that General Flynn complied with the law,” Chaffetz

told reporters after the briefing. Said Cummings: “He was supposed to get permission, he was supposed to report it, and he didn’t. This is a major problem.” Chaffetz and Cummings stressed that as a former military officer, Flynn would have needed special permission for his appearance at a gala sponsored by RT, the Russian-governmentfunded television station, for which he was paid $45,000. For his work lobbying on behalf of the Turkish government, he was paid more than $500,000.

nation+world POLITICS A security firm said Tuesday that new cyberattacks on the campaign offices of the front-runner in France’s presidential race carried digital “fingerprints,” such as IP addresses and malware, similar to the suspected Russian hacking of the Democratic National Committee and others in the 2016 U.S. election. The report, by the Trend Micro research group, did not disclose the potential fallout of the infiltration of the campaign of Emmanuel Macron, a centrist who faces far-right leader Marine Le Pen in a May 7 runoff. If a Russian connection is proved, the hacking would add

to mounting allegations that Moscow is backing attempts to influence Western elections in favor of candidates with policies potentially more friendly to the Kremlin. Le Pen has called for better ties with Russia. Tokyo-based Trend Micro said Macron’s campaign was targeted in March and April by a cyberspying group called Pawn Storm. The group has allegedly used phishing and malware to infiltrate other political organizations, as well, such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union and the DNC. According to the research firm, the hackers created several email addresses on a fake

Judge blocks Trump order on sanctuary cities POLITICS A federal judge in San Francisco dealt the Trump administration yet another legal blow Tuesday in a ruling that halted President Trump’s plans to withhold federal funding from cities and towns that refuse to detain immigrants for deportation. Judge William Orrick imposed a nationwide injunction against a Jan. 25 executive order authorizing the attorney general and homeland security secretary to withhold federal grant money from so-called sanctuary jurisdictions that do not cooperate with U.S. immigration officials. Orrick called the order “broad” and “vague” and said the plaintiffs, the city of San Francisco and Santa Clara County, were likely to succeed on the merits of their lawsuits challenging it. In the 49-page ruling, Orrick pointed to discrepancies in the Trump administration’s own interpretation of the executive order. In court, the government’s lawyers suggested cities and towns were overreacting to the order since the federal officials have not yet defined what sanctuary cities are, or moved to withhold any funding. But on television and in news conferences, the judge said, the president and Attorney General Jeff Sessions have threatened to sanction cities, leaving local officials nationwide fearful that they will lose funding for vital services. Wells Fargo has been under fire for opening unauthorized bank accounts.

Wells Fargo board barely re-elected BUSINESS Shareholders irritated by the fallout from Wells Fargo’s sales practices scandal sent a warning to the bank’s executives and board, with some directors barely holding onto their jobs Tuesday in what is typically a symbolic vote. The shareholder meeting was the first time Wells Fargo had met collectively with its investors since acknowledging last fall that its employees opened up to 2 million bank accounts without customers’ authorization in order to meet unrealistic sales quotas. All 15 board members kept their positions for another year, but four directors received backing of 60 percent or less. That included Chairman Stephen Sanger, who received 56 percent support. “Wells Fargo shareholders today have sent the entire board a

clear message of dissatisfaction,” Sanger said. The board has no plans to replace any members of the board following the vote, Sanger said. The contentious meeting was interrupted several times by protesters, with one man, Bruce Marks with the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America, being effectively dragged out by armed security guards. Sanger said Marks had to be removed because he physically approached a board member. “Tell us what you knew and when you knew it,” Marks yelled before he was removed. Many employees who spoke called for additional investigation into Wells Fargo’s sales practices and union organization. Some customers who came to speak pleaded for mortgage relief. KEN SWEET (AP)

TECHNOLOGY The ride-sharing company Uber has set ambitious goals to create a network of flying taxis in Dubai and the Dallas area by 2020. At a summit in Dallas on Tuesday, company executives outlined plans to develop their own electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing aircraft, or VTOLs, that would use small landing pads called “vertiports.” “It’s possible because we’re radically changing the type of aircraft,” Jeff Holden, chief product officer at Uber Technologies, said at the summit. “This is why we’re so bullish. … We just want to usher it in as fast as possible because we all want to live in this world.” A futuristic fantasy for many, that world may now be closer to reality. Still, flying cars face a number of logistical, technical and regulatory obstacles: Much as in the development of electric planes, battery limitations place boundaries on the duration of a flight in an all-electric flying car. But those hurdles have not stopped Uber and other Silicon Valley tech companies from launching aggressive initiatives to develop flying vehicles. Uber published a white paper about “on-demand aviation” last fall, and earlier this year, the company hired longtime NASA aircraft engineer Mark Moore to

help it develop flying cars. Eventually, the company, which is also developing selfdriving cars, thinks it can get the cost for a trip in an Uber flying taxi down to an ambitious $1.32 per passenger mile, with the overall goal of making it “economically irrational” to drive a car on the ground, Holden said Tuesday. Uber’s announcement Tuesday came on the heels of another flying car earning its wings this week. Kitty Hawk — a company backed by Larry Page, the Google co-founder and Alphabet Inc. chief executive — debuted its long-secret “Kitty Hawk Flyer” in a demonstration video released Monday. The prototype of the Kitty Hawk Flyer looks far less like anything from “The Jetsons” and more like the amalgam of a Jet Ski, a motorcycle arcade game and a giant drone. So far, the Kitty Hawk Flyer is only meant to be flown for recreational purposes in “uncongested areas” in the U.S., specifically over fresh water, according to the company’s website. Those restrictions didn’t stop the company’s leaders, including Kitty Hawk chief executive Sebastian Thrun, from promising this was a revolution in “personal transportation.” Last week, Slovakian company AeroMobil revealed its own carplane hybrid, a sleeker blend of sport car and airplane — and that will require a pilot’s license to operate. It also comes with a hefty

price tag: somewhere between $1.3 million and $1.6 million. Those two factors alone place it out of reach for the average user. As for the Kitty Hawk Flyer, a pilot’s license won’t be required to fly it; the FAA has designated the Flyer as an ultralight aircraft. There are no prices yet, only a three-year membership for $100 that promises “priority placement on the Kitty Hawk Flyer customer wait list” and $2,000 off whatever the Flyer’s retail price ends up being. According to its website, the Flyer will be on sale by the end of the year.

A Republican bid to keep the government open past Friday includes no new money for the construction of a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, according to several congressional aides. GOP leaders submitted the new offer Tuesday to appease Democrats, whose votes are needed to avert a shutdown. However, Republicans insisted on increases in border security and defense spending, including money to repair existing fencing and new surveillance technology to patrol the border. Democrats have indicated that they would support such appropriations so long as no money goes toward an actual wall. On Monday, Trump seemed to soften his demand for immediate funding for construction of a border wall, telling a small group of conservative reporters that he would be open to delaying a confrontation with Democrats over the border until September. But Tuesday, Trump insisted that “the wall’s going to get built,” and it will be built “soon.” For now, congressional leaders are encouraged that the White House won’t be pushing for border money. “I think he realizes that it is unlikely to be part of the negotiation this time around,” Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., said.

A legal step in the U.S. Last year, the Federal Aviation Administration granted an exemption to the Terrafugia Transition to be classified as a “light sport aircraft,” marking the first step toward legalizing commercial flying cars. The Washington Post’s Jacob Bogage was more hesitant about the Terrafugia Transition itself, describing the “two-seated flying thingumajig” as “a goofy mosquito, its fat cockpit shoving through the wind while aloft, its wings folded up like a dragonfly while grounded.” Pilots can operate the aircraft with a “sport” license, which requires 20 hours of lessons. Peppers flagged for bad sample

HAWKS AT WIZARDS | GAME 5: TONIGHT, 6 P.M., CSN, TNT

Deep Hawks knot up series at 2-2 with help from Prince, Bazemore NBA PLAYOFFS In the first four games of their first-round series against the Wizards, the Hawks’ thirdleading scorer is a rookie, and a veteran reserve who lost his starting role has made more 3-pointers than every Washington player not named John Wall or Bradley Beal. With contributions from players other than its core of power forward Paul Millsap, point guard Dennis Schroder and center Dwight Howard, Atlanta has tied the series at 2-2 with two straight home wins. Small forward Taurean Prince is averaging 13.3 points — behind Millsap (22.5) and Schroder (23.3) — in his first playoff series, and reserve forward Kent Bazemore has made six 3-pointers on 35.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

“We can’t let guys like that get off. It hurts us,” said backup guard Brandon Jennings, who’s scoring seven points per game for the Wizards in the series. “It’s not just Prince. It’s the whole team. They’re playing with confidence. We gave them confidence.” Monday night, the Hawks won 111-101 and tied the series because of those role players. While Millsap had a pedestrian night — at least by his standards — Atlanta supplemented his 19 points with Bazemore’s 16 off the bench. Bazemore had lost his position in the Hawks’ starting five to Prince but has thrived off the bench in the playoffs. Point guard Jose Calderon is another bench player to hurt the Wizards. Fouls sidelined Schroder in the first half Monday, and Calderon had 10 points and five assists with a plus-minus of +29 in 20 minutes. While Atlanta looked to the bench and found answers, Washington’s supporting cast had just 23 points, 13 by Bojan

Boxed out of prime time The 6 p.m. tipoff tonight for Game 5 of Washington’s first-round series with the Hawks is an hour earlier than most weeknight Wizards home games and two hours earlier than Monday’s Game 4 in Atlanta. The unusual start time is all about TV, allowing TNT to show a double-header with Wizards-Hawks preceding Bulls-Celtics (8:30). Sports Media Watch noted that had the Trail Blazers managed to stave off elimination against the Warriors on Monday, Game 5 of the Wizards-Hawks series would have been bumped to NBA TV at 7 p.m. But with just two games, both on the East Coast, the NBA decided to keep its TV partner happy. Bogdanovic. Early in the fourth quarter, the Wizards’ reserves couldn’t lift their team. The game was tied at 77 when the lineup of Jennings, Bogdanovic, Jason Smith and Kelly Oubre Jr. started the period with Otto Porter Jr. After Bogdanovic’s 3-pointer, consecutive turnovers threw the unit out of rhythm, and Atlanta jumped to an 89-81 lead, forcing coach Scott Brooks to call timeout at the 9:11 mark and bring in more starters. “We just couldn’t catch a break,” Jennings said. “That start art of that fourth quarter with the he second unit, we didn’t do our job.” b.”

Before this week, defensive standout Jabrill Peppers was expected to be a firstround pick in the NFL draft Thursday. But Monday brought news that may result in some teams passing on the linebacker/safety from Michigan. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Peppers was flagged for a diluted urine sample in his drug test at February’s NFL combine. That counts as a failed drug test. Peppers’ representatives at CAA told Schefter that their client was sick and has a history of cramping, so he was “pounding water.” ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper said Monday that Peppers could miss out on being a top-10 pick but would likely still be selected in the first round. Earnhardt says he’ll retire at the end of the season

Alzner ‘not sure’ if he’ll be ready to play Penguins

Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced his retirement at the end of the season Tuesday, a decision that will cost NASCAR its most popular star as the series scrambles to rebuild its fan base. The driver of the No. 88 Chevrolet turns 43 in October, is newly married and wants to start a family. He’s been plagued by concussions for years and missed half of last season recovering from a head injury. The two-time Daytona 500 winner has only one top-five finish this season. He took another hit Monday at Bristol Motor Speedway when a mechanical issue caused him to crash. (AP)

With Washington’s second-round playoff series against Pittsburgh opening Thursday, the Capitals are inching toward being fully healthy. Defenseman Karl Alzner, who has missed the past four games with an upper-body injury, practiced Tuesday and said it was the most on-ice work he had done since being ruled out for Game 3 against Toronto. Alzner said he’s “not sure” he’ll be ready for Game 1 at Verizon Center on Thursday, but added that he is “progressing.” Washington won three of the games Alzner missed, when Nate Schmidt was paired with John Carlson. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Free-agent running back Adrian Peterson told ESPN on Tuesday he has agreed to a two-year contract with New Orleans. NFL Network reported that the deal gives Peterson $3.5 million guaranteed and is worth up to $8.25 million with incentives. Peterson, 32, spent 10 years with Vikings and topped 1,000 yards rushing seven times. He played in only three games last year, missing most of the season with a torn meniscus that required knee surgery. In 2012, he returned from surgery to repair a torn ACL to rush for a career-high 2,097 yards. In 2015, his last full season, he rushed for 1,485 yards and 11 TDs. He missed 15 games in 2014, when he pleaded guilty in a child abuse case against his 4-year-old son. (AP/EXPRESS)

Residents of some D.C. buildings can see a free comedy show right downstairs AMENITIES Producing stand-up comedy is like growing an orchid: You’ve got to get the lighting just right or it will wither and die. That’s why, just minutes before a show last month, comedy producer Brock Snyder was still moving lamps around the common room at 70 Capitol Yards, a swanky apartment building in the Navy Yard neighborhood of D.C. This wasn’t the first time Snyder had brought stand-up comedy to a condo or apartment building, but the stakes were higher than usual. Sprinkled among the 40 or so residents who showed up for the show were a handful of property managers from around the city, there to decide whether to bring stand-up to their buildings as well. “There is a little buzz going around. Everyone is interested in how it might be received by the residents,” said Tiya Kassa,

who manages the adjacent building, 100 Capitol Yards. At precisely 7 p.m., the lights dimmed and the show began. A former competitive baton twirler, Snyder jogged to the makeshift stage — really just a bare patch of floor at the front of the room — and pepped up the audience up by telling jokes while doing splits. “We have 11 comics for you tonight, because I want you to see just how diverse the comedy talent is here in D.C.,” he said. As promised, the comedians who followed encompassed a wide variety of styles, perspectives and topics. Kicking off the show was Tok Moffat, a wry joker. “Where are you guys from? I want to hear you shout out apartment numbers!” he quipped. After him, Dana Fleitman took the mic and told a very funny story about birth control. More than a half-dozen comedians later, Kevin Tit wrapped up

the show with a pun-peppered set and a lengthy joke about classical music. The show’s unorthodox location tripped up some of the comedians, who found that stock banter honed in bars may not translate to living rooms. “Who’s here with a date tonight?” one of the comedians asked. “We’re all married,” a guy in the second row responded. Other comedians used the setting to their advantage. “This is a pretty swanky building,” said Chelsea Shorte, who noticed some people coming to the show directly from the building’s gym. “You guys don’t need to work out. You live here. That’s enough. I have to work out to get a date because I live in a basement.” The idea of putting on free stand-up comedy shows in condo and apartment buildings came to Snyder about a year ago, when he was trying to think up new ways to reach D.C.’s ever-transient population. The concept: small shows, mostly on weeknights, staged

just for a building’s residents and owners and their friends. “There are so many great comedians here breaking new ground and trying new things, and a lot of people just have no idea,” he explained after the show. “How do they know we’re out there? Are we going to put it on public access TV? No, we’re going to bring it to their homes and serve mimosas until it runs out.” A potential downside of D.C.’s comedic talent: When good stand-up comedians notice something awkward that people would rather not talk about, they can’t help but to point it out. As a result, several of the comedians brought up the Navy Yard neighborhood’s recent rapid transition from low-income housing to high-end condos and apartments. “This is a nice building. It’s in Southeast. I don’t know…” said comedian Dylan Meyer, trailing off. “I do know all of you are new to Southeast. There’s not a lot of lifers here.” This quip got a big laugh from CONTINUES ON PAGE 18

the crowd, and no one seemed chagrined. “I thought it was a great show. I was really impressed with the quality of the comedians,” said Kevin Hinton, 50, who runs an education nonprofit. The building managers who attended the show must agree, because Snyder has since been invited to produce about 20 more shows at condos and apartment buildings around the D.C. area, including the luxurious Residences at CityCenter. “Brock brought such a diverse group of people, there was a comedian for everyone’s sense of humor,” Kassa said after the show last month. “A lot of people I talked to said that it was their first show and that they’d definitely be interested in going to see more comedy.” As far as the comedians were concerned, they said that doing

a show in a condo common room — especially one where free drinks are being served — has some clear advantages over the usual dimly lit bar. “People paid attention and stayed for the whole show — you don’t get that a lot in bars,” Tit said. “Maybe they were more willing to sit through the whole show because they were already home.” SADIE DINGFELDER (EXPRESS)

New data suggests condos have the edge over houses in cities REAL ESTATE It’s a housing question that historically has had an easy answer: Do single-family detached houses appreciate in value faster than condominiums? The standard answer has been: Of course single-family houses appreciate faster. They are what most Americans prefer to live in, so there’s stronger demand. They come with their own piece of land — and we all know that

land is a crucial driver of value. Condos, on the other hand, tend to be smaller in square footage, and come with boards of directors, association fees, rules and restrictions. New research conducted by Trulia, the online realty marketing and information company, suggests that these old assumptions could be giving way to changing market trends. According to data compiled by Trulia on millions of properties in the 100 largest U.S. metropolitan areas between February 2012 and February of this year, the median appreciation rates of

condos outpaced those of singlefamily detached houses. It wasn’t even close. Median condo market values rose by 38.4 percent over the five-year period, while median single-family detached houses appreciated by 27.9 percent. The most extreme example is metropolitan New

York, where median condo values are now at 138 percent of median single-family detached house values. In Detroit, the median condo value is 125 percent of the median value of single-family houses. Major urban areas where condos are appreciating faster than detached single-family units

include Seattle, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, Denver, San Diego, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Jose, Calif., and dozens of others. Ralph McLaughlin, Trulia’s chief economist, says one reason for the trend is that in many urban markets, condos are “in areas that are becoming more desirable because they are closer to amenities” such as employment, transit and other attractions. The D.C. market has experienced modest growth in values during the past five years, but condos have appreciated a smidgen faster than houses: 22.4 percent, compared with 21 percent during the same period for detached single-family houses. What to make of this data? Clearly, condos are playing a key role in some cities’ downtown revivals. In other markets, they continue to be more affordable than detached single-family houses and may be appreciating in value faster as a result. KEN HARNEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Picketers march outside CBS Studios in Los Angeles during the writers’ strike in 2007.

QUICK FLASHBACK

A television standoff

The fire-hose flow of shows in this era of “peak TV” could

soon come to a screeching halt. Members of the Writers Guild of America, which represents television and movie scribes, overwhelmingly voted Monday to authorize their union to call a strike. This comes as negotiations between the union and studios barrel toward a May 1 deadline, when their old contract expires. If an agreement can’t be reached by May 1 between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents the studios, writers will strike for the first time in a decade. Here’s what to know. ELAHE IZADI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Why are writers unhappy? Central issues involve shoring up the WGA’s health plan, securing family leave and protecting the guild’s current pension plan. The WGA argues that writers’ average yearly income has decreased while studios’ operating profits have doubled from a decade ago. The other main point in play involves how writers are compensated. The flood of new shows on air and on digital platforms is changing how shows are made. Writers are still paid per episode, an older formula. But the

norm has shifted from 22-episode seasons to about 10 to 13 per season, and shows now take longer to produce. While taking more time to produce an episode can make for better TV, writers argue they are losing out on pay — especially with exclusivity deals that make it hard for writers to get work on other shows to make up the difference.

Will writers actually strike? Maybe. Monday’s vote authorizes the guild to call a strike. But the guild and studios still have a

week to hash things out and finalize a new contract. After May 1, the old contract expires and the union has promised a work stoppage. The guild announced it would resume talks on Tuesday, as in yesterday, with the AMPTP.

How will this affect my shows? That all depends on how long a strike would last. Scripted shows could have to end their seasons early and viewers would see a big dent in the summer TV season.

Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen to voice Timon and Pumbaa, respectively, in live-action “Lion King”

The most immediate effect would be felt by late-night, with legions of writers penning jokes, monologues and elaborate sketches for daily or weekly shows. That could be a big deal in 2017, with a big appetite among viewers for political comedy on TV. For instance, “Saturday Night Live,” which is experiencing some of its highest ratings in years, still has three episodes left before it breaks for the summer — May 6, 13 and 20 — that could not get made. NBC also planned 30-minute, prime-time editions of “Weekend Update” for August. Plus, Comedy Central will premiere a Trump parody on Thursday, and roll out a new post“Daily Show” series in the fall. Late-night aside, it’s possible many viewers won’t notice much of a difference because of the ability to binge-watch on streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. A strike may end up being the time viewers just catch up on all that good TV they missed.

RICHARD VOGEL (AP)

The effects of a strike The previous writers’ strike lasted 100 days, from November 2007 to February 2008. Many scripted shows, such as “30 Rock” and “Heroes,” cut their seasons short. Some talk shows continued on. While many late-night hosts improvised, a few did return to the air sans writers (Jon Stewart rebranded his Comedy Central show as “A Daily Show With Jon Stewart”). David Letterman also came back after his production company, which owned his “Late Show,” struck its own interim deal with the WGA. Many working in film also said they felt the strike’s effects all the way into 2009. Michael Bay blamed the strike for ruining “Transformers 2,” since they only had three weeks to put the story together. Other movies, including “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and “Terminator Salvation,” were also affected. E.I.

Willie Nelson, at his best Legend’s latest album displays a new level of comfort and warmth MUSIC REVIEW Willie Nelson is back. “God’s Problem Child,” out Friday, is his first album of new material in three years, and at his age (he’ll be 84 on Saturday), Nelson hasn’t dulled his pen, his voice or his simple, eloquent guitar. Strip away the mythology, the rivalries, the battles with the IRS and the fondness for marijuana, and you’re left with Nelson’s

music, its powerful mood set by a soft, direct voice that seems to have grown more expressive over the years. This album is a warm, mellow work, with few surprises but many moments to savor. It’s taken decades for Nelson to sound this comfortable and relaxed. Seven of the songs are co-written with longtime producer Buddy Cannon. They include Nelson’s amused rebuttal of the frequent internet postings announcing his

death — “Don’t bury me, I’ve got a show to play,” he sings on “Still Not Dead” — and his succinct analysis of America’s choice of Donald Trump. “God’s Problem Child” does have a tang of mortality. The late Leon Russell, a close friend, is heard on the title cut in what is thought to be his last recording, and the final song on the album is a heartfelt homage to the late Merle Haggard, who Nelson often worked with. Many of the greats from his era have fallen, but Nelson’s incredible run is still going strong. GREGORY KATZ (AP)

trending “I suppose they just wanted to make clear this is a tabloid. Thank you for clearing up your mission through graphic design.” CHAD SIMONE, a commenter on huffingtonpost.com, reacting to the

letter from editor-in-chief Lydia Polgreen about the online media outlet’s new changes. On Tuesday morning, readers discovered that the publication had changed its formal name to HuffPost, and debuted a new logo and bolder design. Polgreen wrote of the change: “We’re doubling down on our bold, splashy style, and serving up the news with a sense of humor, outrage and empathy.” The splashy design takes its cues from tabloid headlines.
