THE DISTRICT Some 21,000 people were invited to attend the annual White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, one of the year’s largest events held at the mansion and one that attracted additional attention this year after the newest occupants of the most famous house on Pennsylvania Avenue got a slow start planning the party. But despite concerns, it all seemed to go off without a hitch. It was lower key and less flashy than in years past. First lady Melania Trump wanted to focus on the more traditional aspects of the longtime Easter Egg Roll, her spokeswoman said. Children and families roamed the lawn and stopped at picnic tables to make drawings that would be sent to troops overseas. They tossed beanbags and practiced soccer at makeshift goals set up by D.C. This time, in the latest bit of mascot-on-mascot violence, the Easter Bunny clocked Teddy Roosevelt on Sunday in the Presidents’ Race at Nationals Park. Evidently, the bunny has had it in for the Racing Presidents, so maybe it’s Teddy’s fault for not being on high alert. The Easter Bunny has played the spoiler at several holiday races over the years. local Agency plans to offer service at 30 stations by the end of 2017 TRANSPORTATION Good news for Metro riders searching for a way to pass the time as they await their trains — a sometimes lengthy ordeal. Metro plans to turn on free customer Wi-Fi at 30 stations by the end of the year, the transit agency said Monday, allowing passengers on phones, tablets and laptops to tap into the agency’s wireless network. By year’s end,
if all goes to plan, nearly every Red Line station from Union Station to Medical Center will have access to free Wi-Fi (the exception being Woodley Park), and a broad section of the system’s core should also be covered. Free Wi-Fi is already offered at six underground stations as part of a pilot program, which Metro says is used by hundreds daily at Union Station, Metro Center, Gallery Place, L’Enfant Plaza, Judiciary Square and Archives. Monday’s announcement adds 24 more underground stations to the list, and follows General

In a 4-3 decision, the Arkansas Supreme Court halted the executions of two men, Don Davis and Bruce Ward, originally scheduled to be put to death Monday night, putting another legal roadblock in place in the state’s plan to conduct eight lethal injections before its supply of a key drug expires at the end of April. Mary Hernandez of Houston was part of a tummy-tuck study testing the drug versus a placebo and doesn’t know whether she got the drug or a dummy medicine. But she hurt less than she expected to and never filled a prescription for pain pills. “The goal would be to have half or more of patients not requiring an opiate after they go home,” said Heron’s chief executive, Barry Quart. “You have far fewer opiates going out into society, far fewer opiates sitting in medicine cabinets that make their way to a high school.” Studies so far are mid-stage — too small to prove safety and

HEALTH Vicodin, OxyContin and similar drugs are widely used for bad backs, severe arthritis, damaged nerves and other woes. They work powerfully in brain areas that control pleasure and pain, but the body adapts to them quickly, so people need larger and larger doses to get relief. This growing dependence on opioids has mushroomed into a national health crisis, ripping apart communities and straining police and health departments. Every day, an overdose of prescription opioids or heroin kills 91 people, and legions more are brought back from the brink of death. With about 2 million Americans hooked on these pills, evidence is growing that they’re not as good a choice for treating chronic pain as once thought. Drug companies are working on alternatives, but have had little success. Twenty or so years ago, they invested heavily and “failed miserably,” said Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Pain is a pain to research. Some people bear more than others, and success can’t be measured as objectively as it can be with medicines that shrink a tumor or clear an infection. Some new pain drugs that worked well were doomed by side effects — Vioxx, for instance, helped arthritis but hurt hearts.
Using marijuana for pain A cannabis extract is sold as a mouth spray in Britain for nerve pain and other problems from multiple sclerosis. But cannabinoid research in the U.S. has been hampered by marijuana’s legal status. A special license is needed and most researchers don’t even try to obtain one, said Susan Ingram, a neurosurgery scientist at Oregon Health & Science University. She is studying cannabinoid receptors in the brain, looking at how pain affects one type but not another. Such work might someday lead to drugs that relieve pain but don’t produce a high or addiction. (AP)

Some of the most heated exchanges at district town halls around the country involve health care. So how do lawmakers pay for their health insurance? The Affordable Care Act has required members of Congress and many staffers to join the health care exchanges in the District and leave the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program. Through that federal plan, lawmakers and their staff had about 70 percent of their insurance premiums covered by the federal government. But they generally make too much money to qualify for subsidies in the exchanges, which were intended for people who previously did not get insurance from employers. So the Obama administration made an exception that allowed them to use the D.C. small-business exchange to receive health care stipends from their employer (the federal government). Yes, the law allows individual congressional offices to be counted as small businesses of 50 or fewer employees. On the exchanges, lawmakers get an employer (i.e., taxpayer) contribution of 72 percent for their premiums. So this has allowed them to receive a similar subsidy as they did under the federal health plan. Some say they donate to charity an amount equivalent to the taxpayerfunded subsidy. Keeping up the verbal volleying, North Korea’s deputy U.N. ambassador accused the U.S. of turning the Korean peninsula into “the world’s biggest hot spot” and creating “a dangerous situation in which a thermonuclear war may break out at any moment.” Pence’s visit to the tense Demilitarized Zone dividing North and South Korea came at the start of a 10-day trip to Asia and underscored U.S. commitment. It allowed Pence to gaze at North Korean soldiers from afar and stare across a border marked by razor wire. Pence told reporters that Trump was hopeful China would use its “extraordinary levers” to pressure the North to abandon its weapons program. President Trump’s setbacks on campaign promises look like they’re catching up with him — bigly. A new poll from Gallup released Monday finds that a majority of Americans no longer view Trump as keeping his promises, with poll numbers on that question falling from 62 percent in February to 45 percent in early April, a stunning tumble of 17 percentage points. The drop was seen across every demographic group: women, men, millennials and baby boomers. While numbers sank the furthest among respondents who identified as a Democrat or liberal, independents who said they thought Trump kept his promises fell from 59 percent to 43 percent; even among Republicans, the numbers fell, from 92 percent to 81 percent. Scientists have witnessed the first modern case of what they call “river piracy,” and they blame global warming. A study in Monday’s Nature Geoscience journal showed that most of the water gushing from a large glacier in northwest Canada last year suddenly switched from one river to another. The melt from the Yukon’s Kaskawulsh glacier now flows mostly into the Alsek River and ends up in the Pacific Ocean instead of the Bering Sea. (AP)

A 17-year-old girl died Monday after she was seriously injured in a shark attack as she surfed — with family members looking on — off the southern coast of western Australia. Former president Park indicted for corruption South Korean prosecutors on Monday indicted former President Park Geun-hye on bribery, extortion, abuse of power and other high-profile corruption charges that could send her to jail for life. Dozens still missing in garbage dump collapse Rescuers on Monday were digging through heaps of mud and trash that collapsed onto homes near a garbage dump outside Sri Lanka’s capital of Colombo, killing at least 30 people and possibly burying dozens more. Part of the mound collapsed Friday night on the town of Meetotamulla during a celebration of the local new year, damaging at least 150 homes. Erdogan defiant after win International monitors, opposition question fairness of referendum TURKEY Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday rejected international monitors’ criticisms of Turkey’s referendum, insisting the vote was the “most democratic election” seen in any Western country. Unofficial results gave Erdogan’s “yes” vote a narrow win Sunday, with 51.4 percent approving constitutional changes
to convert Turkey’s political system from a parliamentary to a presidential one. Critics argue the reforms will hand extensive power to a man with an increasingly autocratic bent, leaving few checks and balances in place. Gortat drops the hammer on the Hawks NBA PLAYOFFS Marcin Gortat recently has looked more like the center who once anchored a very good Wizards starting lineup. All it took was for his backup to get hurt. In the 114-107 win over the Hawks on Sunday in Game 1 of their playoff series, Gortat logged his most minutes in more than a month (31:14) while outplaying Dwight Howard, scoring 14 points (7-of-11 shooting) with 10 rebounds and two blocks. Howard, who still flashes the physique of a Greek god despite his game looking awfully mortal, had seven points and 14 rebounds (with only four in the second half). The Hawks were outscored by 21 with Howard on the floor. The Wizards were plus-21 with Gortat.
His mini-resurgence — in Game 82 of the regular season, he made 8-of-9 shots against Miami — comes as Ian Mahinmi recovers from a left calf strain. Mahinmi’s injuries have hurt his first season with the Wizards, but when healthy he gave the second unit a defensive force in the middle and even ate into Gortat’s minutes by occasionally working with the starters. The good news for the Wizards is that Mahinmi will be checked out again this week. But that will be no earlier than Thursday, a day after Game 2 at Verizon Center. With that timeline in mind, Gortat’s productivity should make the Wizards breathe easier. Gortat must have been fired up about beating Howard. In previous years he has admitted “it’s one of the matchups I’m always waiting for.” As Sunday’s game progressed and the Wizards had one of their made-for-“SportsCenter” runs,

U.S. runners thrive as Kenyans sweep BOSTON MARATHON The Kenyans are back in Boston after a relative lull that saw them shut out in the world’s most prestigious marathon twice in the past three years. More surprisingly, so are the Americans. Geoffrey Kirui won the 121st Boston Marathon on Monday, pulling away from three-time U.S. Olympian Galen Rupp with two miles to go to give Kenya its first men’s victory in five years. Edna Kiplagat won the women’s race to complete the Kenyan sweep. They were followed closely by Americans who grabbed two of the top four women’s spots and six of the top 10 for men — the first time that’s happened since the race went professional in 1986. “It’s a real exciting time,” said Rupp, the Olympic bronze
medalist who was making his Boston debut. “And it’s awesome to see American distance running on the upswing and being competitive in these races.” Kirui finished in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 37 seconds. Rupp was 21 seconds back, and Japan’s Suguru Osako 30 seconds behind him. Rounding out the top 10 were runners from California, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon and Utah. Kiplagat finished in 2:21:52 to win her Boston debut, adding the victory to two world championships. She pulled ahead of Rose Chelimo of Bahrain in the Newton hills to win by 59 seconds. Ross’ first start likely Wednesday NATIONALS The Nationals have announced that Max Scherzer will open their three-game series tonight at Atlanta, with Stephen Strasburg pitching Thursday. Wednesday is TBA. The acronym suggests mystery, but context renders right-hander Joe Ross the likely answer. Washington began the season with just four starting pitchers because its schedule afforded the team that luxury. So Ross, 23, was optioned to Class AAA Syracuse — not because he lost his spot in the rotation, but because his spot wasn’t necessary for a while. “I hope sometime in the future

Pitching Wednesday would give him five days’ rest. Waiting until Saturday would make his time between starts unusually long. Having him start Wednesday would also give Strasburg an extra day of rest, which the Nationals always welcome.

Endurance running goes way beyond just strapping on a pair of shoes and drinking water.
Get set for a long run Most endurance runners are well acquainted with the idea of a gradual ramp-up of speed and distance over several months. In other words, they know that going from the couch to a 10-miler in a week is a recipe for disaster. But how about all the other stuff that isn’t necessarily in a training guide? Is that big breakfast going to cause trouble at Mile 8? What if you hit the wall when you’re 10 miles in, and your legs give out? And let’s not even talk about chafing. Actually, let’s. Friction and sweat are a bad combination. How to avoid it? Choose smooth fabrics that wick away moisture, and use anti-chafing products such as Vaseline or Body Glide. Carl Ford, a coach for DC Road Runners, says smear anything that “sticks out.” Nipples? Yes. Inner thighs? Yes. But also more unexpected areas, such as the stomach. Lee Firestone, a D.C. podiatrist and running coach, recommends wearing tight acrylic socks and a triedand-true running shoe, and keeping your toenails short. If it’s hot, lace your shoes higher to prevent your foot from moving around in your shoe.
“Part of your training has to be figuring out when and what to eat and drink depending on the distance you’re running,” Ford says. Some athletes will eat two to four hours before, while others will just have water. But surprises can include cramping and diarrhea. The likely reasons that so many runners have gastric distress, called “runner’s diarrhea,” include jostling of the organs, nerves and anxiety, and a lack of blood flow to the intestines. Although runner’s diarrhea isn’t fully understood and can’t always be avoided, coaches recommend hydrating often, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, and reducing anxiety.
Whether you’re training or racing, a hot day is likely to mean a slower pace. Or, as Ford experienced in a marathon a few years ago, you might hit a wall, getting lead legs with many miles to go. Debi Bernardes, a D.C. triathlon coach and owner of UCanDoIt Coaching, knows the scenario well and says she starts “stupid slow” on hot and humid days. “No matter what, unless you are a regular racer, no one is going to run a [personal record] on a hot day,” she says. If the temperature is above 80, with humidity of 80 percent or more, she recommends slowing down by 20 seconds per mile.
For those who train early in the day, Bernardes recommends 12 ounces of water with a pinch of sea salt when you wake up, to replenish the salts you lose breathing throughout the night. “Too many athletes just drink a ton of water, not realizing that they are actually flushing their store of electrolytes,” Bernardes said. If it’s hot, if you’re running longer than 6 miles and you sweat a lot, a sports drink might work. To find out how much you need to hydrate, Firestone recommends checking the color of your urine after training runs and even weighing yourself to see how much weight in fluids you need to replenish.
A few things worth looking into on race day: Make sure your stomach tolerates the race-featured drink — whether Gatorade, Powerade or some other sports drink — before race day. You can find out what brand is being used on the race website. Buy some in advance and try it on a run. If it’s a longer race, you may need food mid-run. Bring along sports gels or small bites of “real” food. But all coaches agree on the importance of arriving up to an hour early, so you can prepare adequately and calmly. Bernardes has a name for the three keys to being decently prepared. “It’s the three P’s: parking, pooping and pacing.”

She says she knows we are different and will give me space, but am I really going to be able to leave her home alone? DIFFERENT STROKES You might feel pressure, true. No matter how compatible a couple is, there are typically at least a few contradictory habits. But bridging those gaps is part of navigating a healthy living-together situation. Honesty and respect are key. Tell her that you like the rhythm of things as they are, and you want her to be content too. Ask
her what her ideal situation is, and how you two can approximate making you both happy. You may find that she actually values her alone time as much as you do. Or, it might be that it feels better to gradually merge your social circles a bit more. If you communicate and value each other’s needs, you’ll work it out.

Practice your own filler, whether nodding or smiling or bringing up the infield fly rule. While you are at peace with the friendship ending, trust that others may take a while to get there — something you can model for them in the process. TELEVISION It’s almost fate that Oprah Winfrey makes one of her rare acting forays in HBO’s “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” an adaptation of Rebecca Skloot’s nonfiction book (premiering Saturday at 8 p.m.). Winfrey plays Deborah Lacks, a woman seeking answers about her late mother. “She wanted nothing more than the story to go out into the world,” Skloot says of the real Deborah, who died in 2009, just before the book was published. “And she said for years she wanted Oprah to play her in the movie.” The film, directed and largely written by George C. Wolfe, tracks Deborah’s investigation into the life of Henrietta Lacks (played by Renee Elise Goldsberry in flashbacks), an AfricanAmerican woman who died in obscurity of cervical cancer in 1951, but who nevertheless became world-renowned — on a cellular level. Scientists found that the cells cultured from her tumor samples didn’t readily die off, which meant they could reproduce again and again. As a result, those cell lines, which have come to be known to research labs and biotechnology companies worldwide by Henrietta’s abbreviated

name, HeLa, have been instrumental in dozens of medical breakthroughs and are still in use to this day. “I felt a genuine desire to share this story, because this is a name that people should know,” Winfrey, 63, says. Winfrey’s Deborah is a woman so disordered by grief and grievance that she seems to live in a limbo of distress: Although her mother’s cells have enduring purpose, Deborah can’t find deep meaning for her own life. Byrne’s Skloot, sensing the inequity of a medical establishment profiting from Henrietta’s unwitting bequest but offering no compensation to her struggling descendants, persuades Deborah to team with her to excavate material for the book.
What got to Winfrey was less the science than the search. “Her thing was not about the money,” she says of Deborah. “It was, ‘I just want to figure out who my mother was.’ ” Winfrey herself professes amazement at having Lacks’ story revealed to her only now. “And I lived in that town for eight years!” she declares, referring to her work as a reporter for a television station in Baltimore, the city where Lacks died. Ultimately, though, she says, she’s grateful there was another journalist to piece together this key bit of scientific history. “We owe a lot to Rebecca Skloot,” Winfrey says. “Had she not been persistent, we would not know the story.” PETER MARKS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Doctor prescribed Prince meds in another’s name
‘Midnight Confessions’ to be Colbert’s next book
According to search warrants related to the investigation into the 2016 death of Prince, a doctor prescribed oxycodone for the musician under the name of a friend to protect his privacy. One affidavit among several court documents unsealed Monday says Dr. Michael Todd Schulenberg admitted he prescribed oxycodone for Prince in a Prince’s associate’s name “for Prince’s privacy.” Autopsy results showed that Prince died from an accidental overdose of fentanyl. The documents suggest Prince was struggling with prescription opioid addiction. (AP)
Stephen Colbert’s recurring segment “Midnight Confessions” from CBS’ “The Late Show” is the basis of an upcoming print and audio release, Simon & Schuster announced. “Midnight Confessions,” the book, is scheduled for release Sept. 5. “Midnight Confessions” will include Colbert’s favorite pleas for forgiveness from the “Late Show” segments, along with submissions from audience members. Colbert said in a statement that he wishes the confessions “were made up.” Colbert’s previous books include “America Again” and “I Am America (And So Can You!).” (AP)
