Patience, people, the robot wars will get started soon enough

Please, God, give me salvation — and a car. That prayer may have been uttered by more than a few people at a Maryland church on Sunday. That’s because Destiny Church in Columbia gave out five used cars to show God’s goodness and to boost attendance at its new location. It was the first Sunday at a spot in a strip mall for the 7-year-old nondenominational church. One car was given to a family in need; the rest were raffled off. (AP)

A burger-flipping robot that can grill 150 burgers per hour is now a cook at CaliBurger in Pasadena, Calif. It’s called “Flippy.” The robot takes burger orders through a digital ticketing system, then flips the burger patties and removes them from the grill. It uses thermal and regular vision, as well as cameras, to detect when the raw meat is placed on the grill, then monitors each burger throughout its cooking process. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

One problem with self-driving cars is people. The Los Angeles Times reports that of six crash reports filed in California so far this year, two involved a person attacking a robot car. Both incidents happened in San Francisco. In one case, a GM autonomous vehicle stopped at a crosswalk was attacked by a pedestrian. In the other, a taxi driver got out and slapped the autonomous car stopped behind him at a light. (AP)

The best (or worst) of the M Shop Today is the grand opening of the M Shop at Metro Center, a store full of WMATA-branded merchandise for all the Metro enthusiasts among us. In a press release, Metro general manager Paul Wiedefeld said, “This is a great opportunity for people to get something unique from Metro.” But he also called it like it is — “another potential source of revenue.” Riders on social media didn’t have much love for the idea. “What if instead of T-shirts, you fixed the trains and tracks?” @marybaumgard tweeted. Md. restores officers’ names on case searches MARYLAND Maryland’s highest court voted unanimously Tuesday to restore the names of police officers to a statewide database of court records and for the fix to take place by the end of the week. The judges moved quickly to reverse a controversial decision that had blocked online public access to information previously available about arresting officers and the names of other law enforcement officials involved in criminal cases. The change was criticized by lawyers, civil rights advocates and journalists who rely on the database to identify patterns of misconduct and to hold police accountable. “We are accountable. We will

address this error,” Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera said before the Court of Appeals voted to put back the names of police officers. “Sometimes small mistakes can have big consequences and that’s what happened here,” she said. The seven-member court initially signed off on stripping out the officer names last June at the

recommendation of an advisory committee and said last week that the policy came in response to concerns about the safety of law enforcement. But on Monday, the head of the committee said the decision to delete was all a mistake. The court scheduled its unusual emergency hearing for Tuesday to reconsider the new policy. “It was an honest mistake, not for any improper motive, but a mistake that never should have occurred, and for which I humbly apologize,” said the judiciary’s rules committee chairman, Alan M. Wilner, a former appeals court judge who attended the meeting Tuesday. The policy became official in August but did not take effect until last week “after the necessary re-programming and testing of the site,” the court said. ANN E. MARIMOW (THE WASHINGTON POST)

local Democrats’ new rules aim to raise number of women seeking office MARYLAND There’s a surge of Democratic women running for office in Maryland this year — and party officials say they want to make sure it stays that way. New rules in place for the June 26 primary mean Democratic voters in 17 counties, some for the first time, will vote separately for men and women who are seeking central party positions. State party chair Kathleen Matthews said the rules will

help ensure a pipeline of future female candidates for higher office, at a time when Maryland has no women in its congressional delegation or any top statewide elected positions. “Maryland is a state that rewards people who have run for office by electing them to higher office,” Matthews said. “And the central committees are the first tier of elective office that you can run for.” In a post Monday on the political blog Seventh State, Matthews wrote that compared to 2014, there are “three times as many Democratic women running for county executive, double the number of women running for

But, she said in an interview, it’s not enough. “Even though you have roughly twice as many women running for office in Maryland, you still have more men running for office than women,” Matthews said. “We’re not at gender parity in terms of the broad pool of candidates.” Matthews said courts have upheld the Democrats’ 50-50 rules. She likened the new Maryland measure to Title IX, which prohibits sexual discrimination in education, and said being elected to a party committee gives individuals more legitimacy than being appointed in the name of gender parity. An 18-year case: Proof that it’s hard to fight Uncle Sam department. The latest victory came less than two weeks ago, when a federal court judge refused the Justice Department’s request to overturn a jury decision in Banks’ favor. Her case began in January 2000, when she was demoted from her position as deputy director of employment in USDA’s Office of Civil Rights. Formerly a member of the Senior Executive Service, the highest level of the federal civil service, she was downgraded to grade GS-15. USDA claimed her performance was unsatisfactory during her probationary period. But Banks, who is AfricanAmerican, charged racial and sexual discrimination. The jury didn’t accept the racial discrimination charge, but it did find that USDA removed Banks “from her SES position because of intentional discrimination based on her sex,” U.S. District Court Judge Amit P. Mehta wrote in his decision. He refused the government’s plea to overturn the jury’s 2013 verdict or to order a new trial. Banks, a Silver Spring widow and mother, said she

A common theme among congressional Republicans is their quest to fire feds faster. President Trump echoed that in his fiscal 2019 budget appendix on the government’s workforce. “Every year,” the budget document said, “the vast majority of Federal workers surveyed disagree with the statement that, ‘in my work, steps are taken to deal with a poor performer who cannot or will not improve.’ ” While the case to dump feds with dispatch is made frequently, less appreciated is the long, onerous route that can confront a federal employee who fights an adverse employment action — even when a jury rules against the government. Consider Denise A. Banks. It took her almost two decades, but she can finally celebrate a victory in her employment complaint against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Now in her 60s (she declined to be more specific), she just won — again — her discrimination lawsuit against the

was “very appreciative” of the judge’s ruling and “very, very excited and happy that justice has been served.” But while she celebrates, her case is a sober reminder of how difficult finding justice can be. Resolving these cases takes time, too much time, because “the administrative process is overburdened, discovery procedures are overwhelming, and the federal courts are slow,” said Bill Day, Banks’ lawyer. “In context, there are only a handful of civil jury trials in

the District Court every year, and only about 1 in 100 employment discrimination cases filed in U.S. District Court makes it to a jury trial and wins.” “If justice is finally done,” Day said, “she will have a few years to serve in the SES, will recoup some of the compensation she lost and will receive some reparation for the lifelong damage to her reputation.” That is too little after an 18year struggle. To avoid investing in a particular company at all, you’ll need to find out which indexes include the company’s stock, and then not invest in those funds. The C Fund tracks the Standard & Poor’s 500 index of the largest companies, the S Fund tracks almost all publicly traded smaller companies, and the I Fund tracks large companies in about 20 countries. The L Funds reflect investments in those funds in ratios varying by the target date to start withdrawals. France will establish 15 as new age of consent FRANCE France announced plans Monday to set 15 as the age of sexual consent amid public outrage over two cases involving sex with 11-year-old girls. Until now, sex with children under 15 could be prosecuted as a sexual offense, but rape charges could be difficult to prove in such cases because French law required evidence that the sex was forced. Previously, the law was categorized as sexual abuse of a minor and punishable with a maximum prison term of five years and up

to 75,000 euros. That allowed two men to evade charges of rape, sparking a heated public debate among French lawmakers. A French court acquitted a 30-year-old man of rape in November, concluding that the 11-year-old girl had not experienced “constraint, threat, violence or surprise” during the sex act, which is how France had previously defined rape. In a similar case, a 28-year-old man was charged with sex with a minor, because it was concluded that the victim was not physically

That’s according to a study published this month in Wilderness & Environmental Medicine that used a database from the Centers for Control and Prevention, The New York Times reported. Researchers found that of the 1,610 people killed in animal encounters from 2008 to 2015, 478 were killed by bees, wasps and hornets; 272 by dogs; and 99 by snakes, spiders and scorpions — including six deaths caused by snakes and six deaths by spiders annually. forced to have sex. That girl was also 11. In the second case, the trial court asked that a new trial be held in a higher court, setting off the public debate. The new law is expected to go into effect as early as next week and will be part of a larger package of legislation intended to reduce sexual violence and harassment. Supporters of more strictly defining what constitutes sex with a minor were adamant that 15, not 13 as some had proposed, should be the age of consent. JASON REZAIAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Is offer to talk ‘sincere’? North Korea signals it’s open to discussing denuclearization, but skeptics voice doubt

Conway found to have violated the Hatch Act

STR/AFP/GETTY IMAGES

NATIONAL SECURITY North Korea has vowed not to test missiles or nuclear weapons during proposed talks with the U.S. and South Korea, officials from South Korea said Tuesday after returning from surprisingly productive meetings in Pyongyang. North Korea said it was prepared to hold “candid talks” with the U.S. about denuclearization and normalizing relations, and “made it clear” that it would not resume provocations while engaged in dialogue, the officials said upon returning to Seoul. North Korea did not confirm South Korea’s version of events, saying simply that the two sides “made a satisfactory agreement” during the meeting between the North’s leader, Kim Jong Un, and envoys sent by the South’s president, Moon Jae-in. There is plenty of cause for skepticism. North Korea has previously said it would give up its nuclear weapons, and has reneged on every deal it has ever signed. Nor was the scope of any proposed talks clear. At various times, Pyongyang has demanded the full withdrawal of the U.S. military from South Korea or the withdrawal of “nuclear” troops and weapons — of which there currently are none in the South. Pyongyang had also demanded the cancellation of U.S. military exercises in exchange for eliminating its own weapons. Similarly, the Trump administration has not clarified whether North Korea must pledge the “denuclearization” President Trump has demanded as a precondition for substantive talks or that it must be agreed upon at the end of negotiations.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, left, shakes hands with South Korean envoy Chung Eui-yong on Tuesday.

But the sudden thaw could, at the very least, bring about a reprieve in the months of acute tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Trump said Tuesday that the U.S. remained “determined to achieve a denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.” He did not directly address the possibility of talks, but said of the news from Seoul: “Hopefully it’s positive; hopefully it will lead to a very positive result.” At a news conference with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, Trump was asked “to what do you owe” the reported North Korean offer. Trump replied, “Me,” apparently referring to U.S. sanctions and his harsh personal criticism of Kim. “No,” he quickly countered as silence engulfed the room. “Nobody got that.” “I think they are sincere, but I think they are sincere also because of the sanctions and what we’re doing in respect to North Korea,” Trump said, describing the measures as “very strong

Past fuels skepticism North Korea has a history of striking bargains with the outside world, almost always involving some kind of payment for some kind of weapons freeze. But it has quickly broken the deals that it has signed, including the 1994 “agreed framework” and a 2005 denuclearization deal struck during now-defunct six-party talks. “I’d caution against too much optimism, because we’ve been down this road too many times before,” said Abraham Denmark, a former Asia official at the Pentagon. “Even if it’s eventually successful, it’s going to be difficult. There will be setbacks and uncertainty.” (TWP)

and very biting.” He also said that “the great help we’ve been given from China” has played a role, although there are repeated reports of North Korea using Chinese companies to evade international sanctions. Not everyone was optimistic

Ex-Trump aide Sam Nunberg says he’ll likely cooperate with Mueller after promising to defy his subpoena

about a breakthrough. “I’m quite skeptical about all of this,” director of national intelligence Daniel Coats told the Senate Armed Services Committee. “Maybe this is a breakthrough. I seriously doubt it, but hope springs eternal.” But the development also offers a welcome glimmer of hope after months of talk emanating from Washington about military options for dealing with North Korea’s nuclear advances. Almost every Korea expert in Washington agrees that there are no good military options for dealing with North Korea. With this diplomatic gambit, Moon is managing to stave off talk of strikes at least for now, said Gordon Flake, a longtime Korea expert in Washington. “Moon sees the same things in D.C. that the rest of us see,” Flake said. “He’s trying to buy some time to figure out some kind of peace.” ANNA FIFIELD, PHILIP RUCKER AND KAREN DEYOUNG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

WASHINGTON Kellyanne Conway, a top adviser to President Trump, violated federal law on two occasions by making public comments supportive of one candidate and against another ahead of a special Senate election in Alabama last year, a federal investigator said Tuesday. The remarks, in a pair of interviews late last year with Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” and CNN’s “New Day,” amounted to a violation of the Hatch Act, which prohibits public employees from using their official capacity to conduct political activity, special counsel Henry J. Kerner said in a report. The White House on Tuesday rejected the findings, saying Conway was only reflecting the president’s views when she spoke against Doug Jones, the Democrat running for the Senate seat, and in favor of Roy Moore, the Republican candidate. Jones ultimately won the seat. But in an 11-page report, the Office of the Special Counsel concluded that Conway “impermissibly mixed official government business with political views about candidates in the Alabama special election” and advised Trump to consider disciplinary action. Under the law, federal officials may express their political views as private citizens, but not in their government roles. That includes comments that could influence elections, the report says. British anti-terrorism police probe collapse of former double agent SALISBURY, ENGLAND Britain’s counterterrorism police took over an investigation Tuesday into the mysterious collapse of a former spy and his daughter. The government pledged a “robust” response if suspicions of Russian state involvement are proven. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said he wasn’t yet accusing anyone of harming Sergei

Skripal and his daughter, Yulia. The two Russians collapsed Sunday on a bench in southern England after coming into contact with an unknown substance. But he stressed that Britain would act — and possibly limit its participation in the upcoming soccer World Cup in Russia — if Moscow’s hand is shown. As of late Tuesday, both Skripal, 66, and his daughter, 33, remained in critical condition in the intensive care unit of Salisbury District Hospital, police said. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova

Merriam-Webster adds ‘dumpster fire’

dismissed Johnson’s remarks as “wild,” while police said it was too soon to jump to conclusions. Skripal is a former colonel in Russia’s GRU military intelligence service convicted in 2006 of spying for Britain and imprisoned. He has been living in Britain since his 2010 release. The Kremlin said British authorities haven’t approached Russia for help in the investigation, but Dimitry Peskov, President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, said “Moscow is always ready to cooperate.” MARTIN BENEDYK,

Merriam-Webster Dictionary has put the phrase “dumpster fire” into its lexicon, NPR reported Monday. The metaphor for a complete disaster is among 850 words the dictionary included in its latest update. The dictionary says the first known use of the phrase was only 10 years ago, according to NPR. Now, “dumpster fire” is a popular meme on Facebook and Twitter that has been used to describe cultural, political and sporting situations. (EXPRESS)

A push to ease bank rules Senate advances a plan with bipartisan support to roll back Dodd-Frank

WASHINGTON The Senate is slated to pass sweeping legislation this week to roll back key components of the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act, put in place after the global financial crisis. The bill, which has garnered bipartisan support, would free dozens of financial institutions from the strictest rules put in place by regulators. Here are five of the most significant aspects of the Senate legislation.

Cohn to exit amid dispute over tariffs

J. SCOTT APPLEWHITE (AP)

Russia eyed in spy’s illness

A SIGN OF THE TIMES?

How big is big? Banks with more than $50 billion in assets are considered “too big to fail” and undergo the strictest regulatory scrutiny. The proposed legislation would raise that threshold to $250 billion in assets, potentially allowing several high-profile financial institutions to escape the extra regulatory scrutiny. The change would give community and regional banks more control over how much capital they keep, whether they issue dividends to shareholders or buy back stock. It would reduce the number of “too big to fail” banks from 38 to 12.

Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, center, is sponsoring a bill to change Dodd-Frank and ease regulations on small banks.

custody banks, such as State Street and Bank of New York Mellon, primarily take in money from hedge funds or large asset managers, not Main Street customers. The Senate bill would soften the capital requirements for such banks. But some Democrats and advocacy groups worry that big banks, such as Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase, could find a way to exploit the exemption for their own benefit.

A Wall Street carve-out?

The Volcker rule

A key aim of Dodd-Frank was to ensure that banks have enough capital to withstand another period of economic turmoil without needing ding a taxpayer taxpay bailout. But

Small banks would get relief from the Volcker rule, which bars banks from making risky wagers with their own money. The Senate bill would exempt

small financial institutions with less than $10 billion in total assets from the rule. Such institutions do not engage in the type of risky trading that the rule aims to curb, the industry says.

Mortgage data The legislation offers small and regional banks relief from some of the restrictions on mortgage lending put in place after the financial crisis. But some Democrats and advocacy groups are concerned that the bill would also get rid of a requirement that banks report more data on who they lend money to. This data helps regulators spot potential discrimination against minorities, they say.

What about the CFPB? The House’s major rollback of Dodd-Frank last year included measures to weaken the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which Republicans say has been too aggressive. The House legislation stripped the CFPB of its power to write major rules regulating consumer financial companies, such as debt collectors, without getting approval from Congress. But that legislation failed to gain traction in the Senate, in large part because of its attack on the CFPB. To attract Democratic co-sponsors in the Senate, the bill is silent on one of Republicans’ biggest gripes, the power of the CFPB. RENAE MERLE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Oldest message in a bottle found

An Australian family has found a 132-year-old message in a bottle — the world’s oldest — on a beach in western Australia, The Guardian reported. The Illmans initially thought the gin bottle would make a nice addition to their bookcase — until they found a rolled-up piece of paper inside. Experts confirmed the note, dated June 12, 1886, is authentic. It was tossed overboard from the German sailing ship Paula into the Indian Ocean as part of an experiment to track ocean currents. POLITICS Top economic adviser Gary Cohn is leaving the White House after breaking with President Trump on trade policy, the latest in a string of high-level departures from the West Wing. Cohn, the director of the National Economic Council, resigned Tuesday. He had been the leading internal opponent of Trump’s planned tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum, working to orchestrate an eleventh-hour effort in recent days to get Trump to reverse course. But Trump resisted those efforts, and reiterated Tuesday that he will be imposing tariffs in the coming days. Cohn’s departure comes amid a period of unparalleled tumult in the Trump administration, and aides worry that more staffers may soon head for the doors. The announcement came hours after Trump denied there was chaos in the White House. Trump maintained that his White House has “tremendous energy,” but multiple officials said Trump has been urging anxious aides to stay. “Everyone wants to work in the White House,” Trump said during a joint news conference with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven. ”They all want a piece of the Oval Office.” In a statement, Cohn said it was his honor to serve in the administration and “enact pro-growth economic policies to benefit the American people.” ZEKE MILLER AND JONATHAN LEMIRE (AP)

TEXANS’ STANCE?

Tanner Roark admitted he was overthinking last year, when his ERA ballooned to 4.67.

Simplified mechanics

Roark tweaks his delivery in an attempt to reclaim his form from 2014 and 2016 NATIONALS The 2017 season left Tanner Roark frustrated. His results didn’t mimic what he was used to as a starter. He didn’t get to pitch in the NL Division Series. So he went home and decided he needed to change. Roark used to stand on the rubber and face the hitter when no one was on base. He would turn and lean and reach back before delivering, a process that worked well for him in two of the past four seasons. He won 15 games

as a first-time, full-time starter in 2014. He won 16 when he returned to the rotation in 2016. His ERA was 2.85 in 2014, grew to 4.38 in 2015 — when he started only 12 games — and dipped back to 2.83 with 33 starts in 2016. But he never found consistency last season, when his ERA was two runs higher. He never seemed comfortable, despite saying over and over that he “felt good.” His manager admitted that the World Baseball Classic’s early grind probably contributed to his

struggles. Now Roark will admit tht he was overthinking all year. “There was just a lot going on. You know, life,” Roark said. “Learn from it. Get better.” As he threw four scoreless innings in his third spring training outing Monday, Roark had very little going on at all. He allowed one hit. His stuff looked strong, well-located and reliable. And as in all three of those starts now, he didn’t square up to the hitter when the bases were clear. Instead, he stood with his back foot on the rubber, as he might in the stretch, came set, and stepped laterally back with his front foot — like Noah Syndergaard or David Price — before loading over the rubber and pushing forward. In other words, he is now using a modified (and simplified) windup, not quite as stark a change as Stephen Strasburg throwing only from the stretch, but a substantial change nonetheless. “It feels simple, what I want

out of mechanics,” Roark said. “If you have a tendency to think too much … you get stuck in a rut or you’re struggling a little bit and you keep overthinking and it just adds, adds, adds.” Spring training statistics may or may not carry into the regular season, but Roark has yet to allow a run and has averaged a strikeout per inning in eight innings. For a man who had not even arrived at camp by this time last year, it feels like a good sign. With an effective Roark behind Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg, the Nationals would have one of the best 1-2-3 starting punches in baseball. Without him, they must rely on Gio Gonzalez, who is consistent in his annual numbers but not from day to day. So far, Roark has looked like e himself again, an efficient righty y with a knack for inducing weak k contact, the guy everyone unnderestimates until he matches es them blow for blow. Team denies it won’t sign protesters Under the direction of owner Bob McNair, below, the Texans are intent on avoiding any free agents who have protested during the national anthem, the Houston Chronicle has reported. Columnist Jerome Solomon wrote last week that two NFL agents told him that “the Texans aren’t interested in any players who participated in pregame kneel-downs in protest of police brutality.” In a statement provided to The Washington Post on Monday night, the Texans called that report “categorically false,” saying the team adds personnel “based on talent, character and fit.” McNair, 80, stirred controversy in October when he said, “We can’t have the inmates running the prison” while referencing protesting players. Friedgen prepares for campus return Maryland announced in January that former Terps football coach Ralph Friedgen, right, would be the featured speaker this Friday at coach DJ Durkin’s spring coaches clinic. Durkin and Friedgen recently told PressBox’s Glenn Clark about how Durkin urged the former coach’s return to campus, and Friedgen said it wouldn’t have happened if Maryland Athletic Director Kevin Anderson weren’t in the midst of a six-month sabbatical. Anderson fired Friedgen, a Maryland alumnus who compiled a 75-50 record with five bowl wins, after a 9-4 season in 2010. “I really questioned whether I’d ever set foot on Maryland’s campus again,” said Friedgen, who told Clark in 2011 that he had “burned his diploma.”

Rams place tag on Joyner, let Watkins test market

Shubhankar Sharma accepted a special invitation Tuesday to play at the Masters next month. Two days earlier, the 21-year-old from India held the 54-hole lead at his first World Golf Championship. Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley said the Masters has a history of inviting international players not otherwise qualified, and Sharma’s results made him worthy. Sharma was outside the top 400 in the world three months ago. Now he is the only two-time winner on the European Tour this season. He lost a two-shot lead in the WGC-Mexico Championship, tied for ninth and rose to a No. 66 ranking. (AP)

Los Angeles has placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on safety Lamarcus Joyner, the Rams announced Tuesday, the last day NFL teams could use the tag. The sides have until July 16 to work out a long-term deal. Joyner, 27, is due $11.29 million this year under the tag. The converted cornerback started 12 games for the NFC West champions last season, totaling three interceptions. Because the Rams used their tag on Joyner, receiver Sammy Watkins can enter free agency March 14. Watkins, 25, had 593 yards and eight TDs for the Rams, who acquired him from Buffalo last August. No one is safe in the Big East The madness began well before March in the Big East. Xavier unseated Villanova for the first time in five years as regularseason champions. The Wildcats lost four times in league play. Georgetown beat Seton Hall and Butler — and finished eighth. The conference tournament starts today. Here are five things to watch this week at Madison Square Garden. RACHEL BLEIER (FOR EXPRESS)

Giant-killers

If the regular season was any indication, this week is going to feature some upsets. Xavier and Villanova are the top seeds, but No. 3 seeded Seton Hall might be just as dangerous. The Pirates pushed Villanova to the brink in a 69-68 overtime loss last week, and Seton Hall boasts one of the toughest matchups in the tournament in 6-foot-10 center Angel Delgado. No team had fewer than three conference losses. Fifthseeded Providence, sixthseeded Butler and No. 7 seed Marquette could all use help to secure a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

The Wildcats get a bye as the No. 2 seed and will face the winner of MarquetteDePaul (9:30 p.m., FS1). Villanova averages a conference-high 87.2 points per game, but that hasn’t always made up for defensive lapses — the Wildcats gave up 101 points in a loss to Butler, and 89 in a defeat to Creighton. If the Wildcats arrive at Madison Square Garden with their focus intact, they have the talent to leave as Big East champs. Guards Jalen Brunson — the conference player of the year — and Mikal Bridges are both shooting over 51 percent from the field.

After winning the Big East regular-season title, No. 3 Xavier was still jumped by No. 2 Villanova in the AP poll. The Musketeers lost to the Wildcats by 24 and 16 in their meetings this season, and all-Big East guard Trevon Bluiett was held to 11 points in the second game. Xavier is eager to prove it has dethroned the Wildcats for conference supremacy. It has held on to win some close games this season, including a three-point victory over DePaul last week. Bluiett averages 19.4 points per game, but the Musketeers can’t afford for him to have an off game.

The Golden Eagles can punish opponents from the 3-point line, where they shoot a Big East-best 41.6 percent as a team. In the backcourt, sophomore Andrew Rowsey and senior Markus Howard combine for 40.8 points per game. If they advance to play Villanova, they could find themselves in a position to ride their hot shooting to the title game. But Marquette went 9-9 in the Big East for a reason. If the Golden Eagles go up against a team that pressures them to take quick shots and forces their offense to attack inside, they may fade quickly.

St. John’s beat Duke and Villanova in the same week. Providence boasts wins over Xavier and Villanova. Butler dropped 101 points in a win over Villanova when the Wildcats were ranked No. 1 early in the season. The Big East has its share of giant-killers. St. John’s lost two games to Georgetown by a combined seven points and gets another shot at the Hoyas tonight (7, FS1). Shamorie Ponds leads the conference in scoring (21.6 ppg) but is questionable with an abdominal strain. If he’s ready to go, St. John’s could be poised for a run.

Jemele Hill issued a statement Monday denying that longtime network personality Chris Berman once left “racially disparaging remarks” in a voicemail to her. The allegation was made by a former ESPN host in a sexual-harassment lawsuit filed Sunday against the network, and Hill said she was “disappointed” that someone she thought was a friend would try to use “a private conversation” for “personal gain.” In a 93-page complaint, Adrienne Lawrence claimed that a two-year stint at ESPN ended when she was fired in August 2017 for complaining about being harassed. She described the network as “rife with misogyny.” Among Lawrence’s allegations was that in “early 2016,” Hill “received a threatening and racially disparaging voicemail from Berman on her ESPN phone line.” According to Lawrence, Hill notified an ESPN executive about it and forwarded the voicemail, but “nothing was done.” “The way this conflict has been characterized is dangerously inaccurate,” Hill wrote in a statement posted to Twitter, adding that Berman “never” left such a voicemail and that their “conflict was handled swiftly and with the utmost professionalism.” ESPN said Monday that the company investigated Lawrence’s claims, “and they are entirely without merit.” DES BIELER

D.C. saxophonist Sarah Marie Hughes, center, regularly performs at Rhizome in Takoma.

CRITIC’S NOTEBOOK

ANDRE CHUNG (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

Moby’s ‘Beautiful’ brooding

CHRIS RICHARDS | THE WASHINGTON POST

The band’s already here: Why local listening matters Local music? I love the stuff. I’ve spent the past 20 years listening — ravenously, rapturously — to music made by my neighbors, and it keeps getting better. Go-go, bluegrass, jazz, rap, hardcore punk, doom metal, all of it. So why do those bumper stickers urging us to “SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC” still make me gag? I think it’s because the word “local” feels parochial, as if the musicians who live nearby have little chance of being heard elsewhere, and therefore

need our “support.” It feels like an insult to local musicians and to local listeners. Besides, listening to local music isn’t an act of charity. It’s a long-term enrichment project. Even if local artists spend most of their lives on the road, they still probably perform on home turf more than a few times every year. Catching a local musician in concert on a semiregular basis allows us to follow that musician’s struggles and developments. We can hear fresh ideas come into bloom. We can take note of old ideas being abandoned and swept away. Most important, we can m measure all of that

change against the change in our own individual lives. It works both ways. A crowd of familiar faces can help a musician feel comfortable enough to test-drive ideas and tunes. When everyone in the room is taking a chance on something new, it starts to feel more like a collaboration. Sarah Marie Hughes, a rising saxophonist who performs jazz and improvised music regularly at Rhizome in Takoma, explains it this way: “Communities of artists and audiences create culture together.” Showing up night after night makes you a participant with a stake in what happens. Sometimes the dialogue between artist and audience is direct. “At Rhizome specifically, I feel like I’m playing for an audience that’s well-listened,” Hughes says. “I’ve had lots of personal conversations with these people. … They help me to realize what’s grown in my playing, the things they’ve

noticed changing. So their feedback educates me.” Alfredo Mojica, lead vocalist and timbale player of the Alfredo Mojica Group, has been performing salsa music at Bossa Bistro and Lounge in Adams Morgan every weekend for more than 15 years. On a recent Friday, his crowd was as diverse and enthusiastic as usual: die-hard locals and passing-through tourists, all wearing their dancing shoes, ready for the ritual. “The most important thing [is] to make the music yours and please the crowd,” he says. Local musicians have to find ways to make it work for everyone in the room — the newbies, the regulars and themselves. In that sense, a n’t local music performance isn’t y. just a model for community. muIt’s a manifestation of commuon ne nity — a place where everyone r. can be themselves, together.

Moby is done screaming — he’s back to brooding. The musician-producer’s 12track “Everything Was Beautiful, and Nothing Hurt,” which dropped last week, returns to the orchestral trip-hop he’s famous for, following two politically charged albums of virtual punk. Many songs offer a fragile and melancholy Moby whispering about human fragility over velvet swells of ambient, orchestral sounds punctuated by drum loops. He’s added female voices for every song, including five with Mindy Jones. They soar while Moby halfsings lines like: “I can’t see, I can’t speak, I can’t walk, I can’t talk/ But I can see how it’s falling apart.” MAR apart. MARK RK K KENNEDY E EDY (A EN ENN (AP) A P))

Season 2 of the Marvel superhero series lacks Season 1’s shock value STREAMING While it is no easy feat to be the first thing that Marvel releases following the historic hype and box office success of King T’Challa’s cinematic debut, “Jessica Jones” was once like “Black Panther” — something new that we hadn’t seen before. The show’s

2015 debut was a more adult Marvel experience, filled with grit, noir and sex that leaped past the boundaries of the comic giant’s general PG-13 experience. While it’s more of the same in Season 2, premiering Thursday on Netflix, it now lacks shock value. Krysten Ritter still brings her A-game as the titular character. She’s as alienating as ever, making few friends, drinking heavily, still throwing people through doors (a comic book

tradition they’ve kept) and having the occasional random hookup on the side. Her sarcastic responses to anyone who talks to her may be her most impressive superpower. Because Jones killed Season

1 villain Kilgrave (David Tennant), many people in New York are scared of her, perceiving the former superhero as a lethal vigilante. “Murderer” is a label she’s not comfortable with, which adds

to her already stressful existence. It’s the lack of Kilgrave that seems to be what’s missing from Season 2. The presence of a key villain is replaced by Jones investigating her past, taking a deeper look into the accident that gave her superpowers. That theme becomes somewhat tiring in the first few episodes until it leads Jones to discovering there are others like her — and one woman in particular, who is even stronger. It’s the discovery of that mystery woman that starts to make things interesting. You’ll probably be most interested in her, rather than Jones’ daily grind, private-eye business and continual trouble with the law. DAVID BETANCOURT (THE WASHINGTON POST)

@_AILEENCLARKE, tweeting at

Washingtonian, which ran a feature Monday about Republicans and Trump supporters in D.C. having a hard time getting dates. One man said a woman said, “I can’t see you,” and left his apartment when she saw he had conservative books on his shelf. There wasn’t much sympathy on social media.

“The entire finale in one picture #TheBachelor.” @MMINI_VAN, tweeting what very well may be the best rendition of the Distracted Boyfriend Meme to date. The boyfriend — Arie Luyendyk Jr. — looks back at Lauren B., the contestant whom he sent home before he proposed to Becca K. On Monday, in the first of two episodes of the heartwrenching finale, Luyendyk broke off his engagement with Becca on camera, telling her that he was still thinking about Lauren and wanted to pursue a relationship with her. Tuesday’s episode of the two-night finale took place after Express’ deadline, but we’re pretty sure this meme still holds up.
