The not so ‘Real Housewives’ POTOMAC, MD. Before he was an award-winning Hollywood screenwriter, Darren Star was just a teenager from Potomac. His dad was an orthodontist, his mom a freelance writer, and he lived in a big brick house where he used to throw basement parties for his classmates at Winston Churchill High School. Star wrote his first big hit based on those years, a show about the lives and loves of pretty, privileged students. He wanted to call it “Potomac, 20854.” But Fox executives thought it should be about someplace more recognizable. Someplace like, say, “Beverly Hills, 90210.” Twenty-five years later, the little Maryland town is finally getting its moment in the spotlight. “The Real Housewives of Potomac,” the latest installment in the Bravo reality franchise, features six women vying to be queen of Potomac’s social set. “Just up the river from our nation’s capital lies a hidden gem — Potomac, Maryland,” reads Bravo’s promotional material.

The real Potomac is beautiful, bucolic and (if we’re being honest here) a teensy bit boring. Looking for excitement? Not much happening here, which is exactly the way most families like it. Potomac Village, at the crossroads of River Road and Falls Road, has a couple of restaurants, including Greenberg’s popular Potomac Pizza. The first episode of RHOP featured Mix Bar and Grill, which is in Potomac, but the other trendy bars and restaurants featured on the show — Sax, Capella, the Graham — are all in the District. “Potomac is, ultimately, a bedroom community,” Greenberg explains. “There’s not a ton to do.” The biggest celebration of the year is Potomac Day, an annual parade with local high school bands, a classic car show and a petting zoo. local Prince George’s County police have identified a woman and her 2-year-old daughter who were found fatally shot near their Fort Washington home. Police tweeted Tuesday afternoon that the victims in the double homicide are Neshante Davis, 26, and Chloe Davis-Green. Police spokeswoman Julie Parker said officers discovered Davis in a parking lot and her daughter in a nearby car, both with apparent gunshot wounds. Bill would pay people not to commit crimes The D.C. Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a bill that includes a proposal to pay residents a stipend not to commit crimes. It’s based on a program in Richmond, Calif., that advocates say has contributed to deep reductions in crime there. Under the bill, city officials would identify up to 200 people a year who are considered at risk of either committing or becoming victims of violent crime. The bill doesn’t specify the value of the stipends, but participants in the California program receive up to $9,000 per year. (AP)
D.C. to study opening pot clubs in the city THE DISTRICT The District will begin studying whether to license private pot clubs as early as next year, under a measure that the D.C. Council approved Tuesday, potentially giving residents and visitors places to gather and smoke marijuana socially in the nation’s capital. The council action amounted to a compromise between allies of D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who had sought to continue a complete ban on pot clubs, and a growing contingent of council members who said they were ready to approve clubs and more fully
implement a 2014 ballot measure that legalized pot possession. However, even in slowing down the effort for clubs, D.C. openly joined a vanguard of mostly Western cities, including Denver, where lawmakers are openly wrestling with how to accommodate fast-shifting public sentiment in favor of greater social pot use in jurisdictions where voters have already legalized possession. In D.C., council members said they were driven to back pot clubs in part out of concerns that current city law, which limits consumption to homes, had begun to
expose more children to secondhand marijuana smoke. Others said widespread disregard for a ban on public consumption in the year since legalization had led to high levels of pot use on sidewalks. Council member Vincent B. Orange, the principal author of the compromise, said the unanimous council vote would “keep momentum alive” for the city to address discrimination in its current marijuana law, including the fact that poor residents in public housing can still face eviction for home use. Seventh-grader Nicole Madison Lovell was stabbed to death the same day she climbed out her bedroom window, by a Virginia Tech student who got help both before and after the crime, authorities said Tuesday. David Eisenhauer, the engineering student accused of kidnapping and killing the 13-yearold girl, had told officers who arrested him Saturday that he believes “the truth will set me free,” according to police documents. Authorities revealed a few facts about their investigation Tuesday, even as they chased more than 400 tips, trying to reconstruct exactly what happened after Nicole was discovered missing Wednesday. Hours after Eisenhauer’s arrest on Saturday, Nicole’s body was found hidden off a North Carolina road, two hours south of campus. A preliminary report found the cause of death was stabbing, and that she died the same day she went missing, Commonwealth’s Attorney Mary Pettitt said. in prison, Pettitt said. The prosecutor said she would not take questions about the investigation. MILITARY The top officers in the Army and Marine Corps testified on Tuesday that they believe it is time for women to register for future military drafts, following the Pentagon’s recent decision to open all jobs in combat units to female service members. Gen. Mark A. Milley, chief of staff of the Army, and Gen. Robert B. Neller, the Marine Corps commandant, both said they were in favor of the change during an occasionally contentious Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on the forthcoming full integration of women in the military. The generals, both infantry officers, offered their opinions in response to a question from Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., who said that she also is in favor of the change. “Senator, it’s my personal view that, based on this lifting of restrictions… every American who’s physically qualified should register for the draft,” Neller said. “Senator, I think that all eligible and qualified men and women should register for the draft,” said Milley. After the hearing, Neller added in a short interview that any young American as a rite of passage should have to register for Selective Service.
The comments on women in the draft are the first since the decision to open all jobs in the military to women.
“Now that the restrictions that exempted women from that don’t exist, then you’re a citizen of a United States,” Neller said. “It doesn’t mean you’re going to serve, but you go register.” The comments are a first in the Defense Department. Previously, senior defense officials have said only that the issue would need to be researched following Defense Secretary Ash Carter’s historic decision in December to open all jobs in the military to women without exception. Carter’s action allows women for the first time to apply for a variety of physically punishing positions, including Army and Marine Corps infantryman, as well as Special Operations jobs,
The last military draft The last U.S. military draft was the country’s first peacetime draft. From 1940 to 1973, men were drafted to fill positions in the armed forces because they weren’t able to be filled voluntarily. On Jan. 27, 1973, as the Vietnam War drew to a close, the Selective Service System announced that there would be no more draft calls. The decision came during President Richard Nixon’s re-election. He had promised to end the draft in his campaign. (EXPRESS)

The Selective Service System has existed for decades, and was created to make sure the military has enough manpower when it is short-handed in a time of war. A variation of it was first adopted in 1917, as the United States prepared to enter World War I. But Selective Service laws have never required women to subject themselves to the draft and face the prospect of being forced into military service. The current version of the Military Selective Service Act requires that virtually all men in the United States between the ages of 18 and 26 register, most within 30 days of turning 18. Research published this week in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine confirms what many of us have suspected for some time: If you smoke a lot of weed, it can potentially do damage to your short-term memory. Professor Reto Auer of the University of Lausanne led a team of researchers who examined data on the marijuana habits of nearly 3,400 Americans over a 25-year period. At the end of the study period, the subjects took a battery of tests designed to assess cognitive abilities. The study found that people who smoked marijuana daily for a long period of time — five years or more — had poorer verbal memory in middle age than people who didn’t smoke, or who smoked less. Auer and his team measured lifetime marijuana exposure in a fantastic new unit of measurement they call “marijuana-years.” Essentially, if you smoke pot every day for a year, that equals one marijuanayear of use. Ditto if you smoke every other day for two years, or once a week for seven years. Among the 3,385 study subjects, only 311 (8 percent) had more than five marijuana-years of exposure. But many drug policy experts are concerned that legalizing marijuana and making it easier to get will cause rates of heavy, problematic use like this to rise. CHRISTOPHER INGRAHAM

A self-described democratic socialist who was running 30 points behind Clinton in the polls as recently as November, Bernie Sanders drew support from young people, liberals and independents. The photo finish in Iowa showed that Republicans are not the only voters looking for qualities beyond experience and electability. The most amazing statistic to come out of the Iowa Democratic caucuses: Among voters ages 17 to 29, Sanders won 84 percent of the vote to Clinton’s 14 percent.
The candidates now face a different set of voters and issues heading into next Tuesday’s New Hampshire primaries: more moderate than Iowans in general, and less attuned to religious-oriented appeals on the campaign trail. New Hampshire voters are socially moderate and fiscally frugal and use a primary voting system that allows greater participation by independent-minded voters who revel in upsetting the conventional wisdom. According to recent polls, Trump and Sanders lead in New Hampshire.

Although Sanders has vowed to get money out of politics, he has nearly matched Clinton’s haul in the two most recent fundraising quarters. For Cruz’s campaign, he had an email out before midnight Monday warning that “I must raise over ONE MILLION DOLLARS in the next 24 hours or I risk wasting our Iowa victory.” But money doesn’t always lead to results. “Jeb Bush spent $15 million and got 3 percent,” Chris Christie said. “I spent $500,000 between all our different efforts and got 2 percent. … I think you’d rather have me manage your money.”
As many expected, Marco Rubio has become the strongest establishment candidate in the GOP field. He made a strong run at Trump for second place in Iowa, an unimaginable result even a week ago. A strong closing kick positions Rubio well for the sprint between Iowa and New Hampshire. He is likely to benefit from a push by the party establishment to get some of the other establishment candidates out of the race. If it doesn’t happen before New Hampshire, a second strong Rubio showing could well force it.

The number of people who participated in the Iowa caucuses Monday night, breaking previous record turnouts. More than 185,000 people turned out for the Republican caucus, surpassing the 2012 attendance record by about 60,000, The Des Moines Register reported. On the other side of the aisle, more than 170,000 participated in the Democratic caucus. There was a 15.7 percent turnout rate among eligible voters — impressive by any standard. What happens now that Trump isn’t invincible? Donald Trump didn’t win Monday night in Iowa, finishing closer to Marco Rubio’s third place than Ted Cruz’s first place. Losing has particular resonance for Trump, who has put his ability to win at the heart of his campaign. By not winning in Iowa — despite every poll conducted in the final 10 days of the race showing him to be ahead — the Trump balloon has sprung a leak. The question now is how he reacts to losing. His concession speech Monday night was remarkably low key. He didn’t tweet in 14 hours. He was not on the morning chat shows. Is that a preview of the Trump we will see on the trail in New Hampshire over the next week? Or will he act as though Iowa either (a) never happened or (b) was utterly predictable — keeping up the appearance of inevitability that has fueled his rise to the top of the GOP presidential field? My guess is that Trump returns to the Trump that his supporters love: boastful, confident and utterly dismissive of any criticism thrown his way. The question is how that will play now that Trump has, at least in one state, been exposed as something less than he promised to be. What Iowa made clear is that Trump won’t coast to the GOP nomination. He now has to have a victory in New Hampshire to keep his still-front-running candidacy afloat and alive. CHRIS CILLIZZA

Those crazy days of summer camp prep With lots of options and high demand, it’s never too early to plan ahead In the depths of winter — and in the wake of Snowzilla — a race is heating up for families in the Washington region: securing a coveted spot in a summer camp. Many parents know that the competition is fierce and requires planning more than six months in advance to ensure that their children will have a place to spend the hot and humid days between June and August before classes start up again. “The D.C. area is one of those areas where you can’t wait until April or May,” said Rockville parent Darien Wright. “In years past, we’ve always had to have it locked down by December 31.” The good news for parents is that there are plenty of options. But winnowing the field can be
an intimidating task, especially for moms and dads looking at camps for the first time. On a recent afternoon, Wright joined dozens of other parents at the Cabin John Mall in Potomac for a summer camp fair hosted by Washington Family magazine. Counselors and camp managers stationed booths inside the mall to talk about fun in the sun while the weather outside turned chilly. Representatives handed out glossy brochures for horsebackriding camps, musical theater camps and mad scientist camps with classes on decoding DNA sequences and the principles of flight and aerodynamics, including lessons on how to build rockets and parachutes. Even more specialized camps offered tips for little leaguers with ambitions to become professional baseball pitchers or for amateur singers seeking a future under the glare
of the spotlights. There also was the “Happily Ever After Princess Camp” for girls age 3 and 4, featuring fairytale ballet lessons, “sparkling costumes, wands and tiaras.” For Wright, the search for summer camp options began months ago. By late January, Wright said he had already filled the majority of his 7-year-old daughter’s summer schedule and hoped to explore new options at the expo. “For her it’s ‘Let’s try a bunch of different things,’ ” Wright said. Wright said he’d settled on Terp Quest at the College Park campus of the University of Maryland because the camp is logistically easy — his wife works close by — and also because the camp includes a wide variety of sports and physical activities. “The swimming options are paramount because we’re big CONTINUED ON PAGE S5

into making sure the kids know how to swim so they don’t become one of those adults that don’t know how to swim,” he said. Wright said other important factors included whether or not the camp allowed families to drop their children off early and pick them up late. “As working parents, we want to make sure it’s covering the day,” Wright said. “Those that have extended care are really key for this household. If it doesn’t have that, we don’t even look at it, quite honestly.” Then, of course, there’s price. Some programs — notably sleepover camps — can cost thousands of dollars per week. “You don’t want to be leaving an arm and a leg at the door,” Wright said, but he noted that the expense can be worth it, especially if his daughter is introduced to a new
circle of friends. For Shoney Ponda, the experience of summer camp provides his daughters with the opportunity to try new things. Visiting Cabin John Mall, Ponda noticed one program in particular that caught his attention: Steve and Kate’s Camp, a California-based outfit that combines a traditional camp experience with a techsavvy touch (see page 7). “I’m an entrepreneur and very attuned to business and marketing,” Ponda said. “So when I see something cool, I think I can recognize it. … It was unique.” Ponda said that he had chosen to visit the summer camp fair on a whim, hoping to explore the possibilities for his daughters, age 5 and 6. His ultimate decision to send his children to camp came amid the Snowzilla blizzard, when schools closed for several days. “The last four days has solidified that decision,” Ponda said, noting that his daughters have

unfortunately I don’t have time to do with them.” Ponda said that he spent many of his childhood summers visiting family in the metropolis of Mumbai (then Bombay) and Delhi. Traveling abroad and being immersed in different cultures broadened his perspective at a young age, Ponda said, and
he hopes summer camps in the Washington region can offer similar stimulation for his children. In the meantime, he wants to provide his daughters with a firsthand experience of their heritage, too. India Bhalla-Ladd fiddled with a button on the broadboard, a pegboard for electronic devices. Their mission in the Georgetown University classroom: to troubleshoot a plant. “We find if you’re missing a semicolon or a comma, the whole thing won’t work,” said India, a junior at National Cathedral School, referring to the code for their plant-managing device, Plantech. The concept is simple, and genius, really: If your plant needs water, sunlight or a temperature adjustment, Plantech will alert you with an LED light. Eventually, the girls hope it will make watering houseplants as simple as sending a text message. “Every person has, at one point, forgotten to water their plant,” said Sara Berrios, a senior at Westfield High School in Chantilly, Va. The group’s idea sprouted from a seven-week Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program, a camp that aims to combat stereotypes about computer coders and encourage high school girls to pursue computer science

education — for free. In 1984, women represented 37 percent of computer science graduates, according to the nonprofit Girls Who Code. Today, women make up just 18 percent of those grads. Girls Who Code aims to provide computer science education to at least a million women by 2020. Last July and August, about 60 students attended the camp, sponsored by BSA (the Software Alliance), Lockheed Martin and the university. In one of the camp’s classrooms on a sunny August morning, one group was hard at work on a video game in which a kayak navigates

streams while cleaning up oil spills. Nearby, another group worked out kinks on a website that matches people to their ideal pet and guides them to a shelter where they can find it. Li-Ting Song and Milena Orbach were putting the final touches on an app that finds restaurants for people with dietary restrictions. Song, a former vegetarian, said she arrived at the idea when she remembered the hassle of finding places to eat. “We would always have to roam around looking for something, and they would get annoyed,” said Song, a student at West Springfield
High School in Virginia. The girls have a variety of reasons for pursuing coding. Some said it’s the job prospects; for others, it’s a love of video games and technology. But many said coding is simply empowering. Victoria A. Espinel, chief executive of sponsor BSA, said the mission struck a personal chord with her as the head of a software advocacy group. “If there’s a significant portion of the population that is discouraged from going into an industry, then, by definition, you are losing a significant chunk of talent,” Espinel said. “There’s a huge population of smart people that are not going into coding, and we need to have them going into coding.” Back at Plantech HQ, the girls sat in suspense as Stephanie Villanueva, of Woodbridge, Va., poured water over their plant. The water seeped into the soil, and the electronic indicators briefly went haywire. An LED light started flashing pink, indicating that they may have overwatered it. Summer camp, the age-old childhood rite of passage, was once the realm of muggy mosquitoladen bunkhouses, sunburns, perpetually soggy bathing suits and s’mores-stickied fingers. But in 2016, the summer experience can be so much more. Now there are camps that specialize in rocketry, computer programming and DNA decoding, as well as camps for every sport, dance discipline and academic course in the K-12 curriculum. For families seeking a blend of that traditional camp experience combined with a modern, tech-savvy touch, there’s Steve and Kate’s Camp, a San Francisco-based outfit with locations in nine states and the District. Founded in 1980, the camp was long a mainstay of Northern California before undergoing

Kids are free to roam for as long as they like between “studios,” allowing them to chose their own activities and plan their own days, which gives youngsters the power to exercise their independence and judgment, Kirk said. “They get to step into a day and really say, ‘Okay, what am I going to do?’ ” Kirk said. “There’s not an adult telling them: ‘Now you’re going to do this, now you’re going to do that.’ They have to decide for themselves.” In the studio settings, kids get to compose their own music in custom sound booths, knead and craft artisan breads in the bakery and create their own stop-motion movies in the animation lab. “We really step back and let them explore and find their passion,” Kirk said. Parents get to share in the fun, too, Kirk said. Each camper is equipped with a bar code that, when scanned, connects their

summeradventures projects to a website where parents can view their daughter’s video or listen to their son’s original song. Mike Saperstein, one of the camp’s four business partners, said that Steve and Kate’s freeflowing model relays a certain level of respect for children that they are unlikely to find in other parts of their life. “Not all 6-year-olds want to do the same thing for the same amount of time in the same space,” Saperstein said. “They may say, ‘I really hate art; why do I have to be in there?’ … We asked, ‘How do we make kids happiest?’ The answer was allowing them to pursue their inherent interests.” Kirk described a recent camper who was an athlete and excelled on the soccer field. Then one day at camp the boy walked into a studio filled with sewing machines and reams of fabric and textiles. He was fascinated by the equipment and spent the vast majority of his summertime designing and fashioning tote bags. “He might not have chosen that at a different camp,” Kirk said. “I don’t think he would have signed up for a sewing camp.” The camper made eight tote bags in a variety of styles. Kirk said that he was liberated by the experience and the freedom to learn a new skill. He also was free to create and make mistakes along the way, part of the camp’s trial-and-error mantra. “Just telling someone what to do doesn’t develop their passion for it,” Kirk said. Instead, the child got “an awesome feeling of accomplishment,” completing the totes on his own. Kirk said that another difference between Steve and Kate’s Camp is a flexible payment plan that allows parents to pay per day, instead of by week, month or session. “Buy any number of day passes and use them anytime” is the camp’s policy. “Unused day passes will be automatically refunded at summer’s end. ... Kerr plays taskmaster for Warriors NBA After the Warriors nearly suffered a stunning loss at the 76ers on Saturday, only to be saved by a last-second Harrison Barnes 3-pointer, coach Steve Kerr had no problem excoriating his team. And when the Warriors scuffled through the first quarter Sunday against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, he smashed his clipboard in half. Someone might want to remind Kerr that his Warriors, who visit the Wizards tonight at 8 (CSN, ESPN), are 44-4 and on pace to win 75 games, breaking the regular-season record of 72 by the Bulls in 1996. But maybe they need that kind of tough love to make history. “We were really bad,” Draymond Green said of the clipboard fury. “He expects perfection, and we’re never there.”
The NBA is considered to be a player’s league — something reinforced by the first few months of this Warriors’ season, when Kerr, recovering from back surgery, put assistant coach Luke Walton in charge and the team thrived. But Kerr brings special qualities. He quickly showed his value when he replaced Mark Jackson before last season. Kerr inherited a 51-win club and immediately turned it into a 67-win juggernaut and an NBA champion. Still, he tries to deflect credit. “They’re amazingly talented and ... committed to one another,” he said of his team. “We’re not paying much attention to the record. We’re just trying to get better, but we don’t take winning for granted.” To say the Warriors’ spectacular start wasn’t expected when Kerr announced his leave of absence in October is an understatement. But between Walton’s calm demeanor and the players doing their best to prove they

REDSKINS When the Redskins finally release Robert Griffin III, an NFL executive and coach will roll the dice on the Heisman Trophy winner who spent 2015 as a thirdstring quarterback. Of the dozen NFL executives, scouts and coaches interviewed for this story, the majority expressed a belief that Griffin is capable of landing a starting job with a new team next season, citing both the lack of sure-fire talent in this year’s draft and the playmaking ability Griffin showed as a rookie in 2012. Others were more skeptical, expressing doubt over his ability to stay healthy and saying teams have learned how to stop him. An AFC pro scout said “of course” Griffin can still play: “He can make all the throws; he can run. He’s shown that. It isn’t just on the player. Coaching does come into it. You’ve got to be willing to adapt your system to a player’s strengths. … If he finds the right situation, he can be a starter again. For sure.” Any team signing Griffin would do so on faith, because

At Super site, new sod should end turf issues SUPER BOWL Will the turf at Levi’s Stadium swallow a player during the Super Bowl on Sunday the way it nearly did Ravens kicker Justin Tucker during a game this season? No way, says the NFL’s guru of playing surfaces. “I think we’re in great shape,” NFL field director Ed Mangan said. The stadium for Sunday’s game is the home of the 49ers in Santa Clara, Calif., and the field has been an issue since the facility opened in 2014. Tucker missed a key field goal attempt during the Ravens’ loss to the 49ers on Oct. 18 when the turf gave way beneath him and his left leg slipped. On Oct. 22, Seahawks QB Russell Wilson had a problem with the field on an awkward slide at the end of a scramble. Because of the turf, the 49ers canceled an open training-camp practice this summer. In August 2014, the 49ers ripped out the grass twice in an effort to get the right feel and avoid the sight of flying chunks of sod. The NFL has put down a new playing surface for Sunday’s game, just as it does for all Super Bowls played on natural grass. The new turf is 17 months old. For groups of four, Barrel offers a liter of Old Fashioneds in a barrel ($50). It’s served with flavored syrups, large ice cubes and citrus peels for garnish. For something lighter, try the bottomless make-your-own mimosas ($20), which include bottle-service champagne, juices and syrups. The syrups for both options may be fruity (pineapple and strawberry thyme), herbal (winter spice and lemongrass vanilla) or wacky (Cocoa Puffs).

“Everybody knows about the pisco sour,” assistant general manager Nick Porter says. “And then there’s the chilcano, which is what locals [in Peru] would drink.” The favorite — available in carafes during brunch ($32-$61) — is made with pisco, lime juice, simple syrup, ginger ale and aged Peruvian bitters made with more than 30 herbs and spices. The drink can be spiced with various infused piscos, called macerados. Seasonally, the bartenders experiment with farmers market ingredients.

A dream come true for the indecisive brunchgoer, El Centro slings eight cocktails for bottomless brunch ($35). In addition to mimosas and bloody marys (or bloody marias, made with tequila instead of vodka), guests mix and match margaritas, micheladas and spiked aguas frescas. Bar manager Jordan Lee recommends pairing a michelada with the Mexican “Benedict,” a poached egg, pork carnitas, black bean puree and salsa verde on a corn sope.
Satellite Room has taken Tang, the “juice” of choice for many middle schoolers, and repurposed it for adults: The neon orange Wu-Tangmosa ($15) is a mix of Tang and champagne. General manager Courtney Williamson says it has to be mixed in massive, multigallon vats to meet the demand. The drink is a nod to Satellite’s appreciation of classic hip-hop, and a way to incorporate the Wu-Tang Clan (whose music is pumped through the speakers on Wednesdays) into brunch.

Duke’s Grocery, the Dupont hang with an East London twist, is opening a second iteration in Woodley Park, to be called Duke’s Counter, in the space that formerly held Zoo Bar Cafe. “We’re going to maintain that welcoming fun vibe,” managing partner Daniel Kramer says of the space, located directly across from the National Zoo. “We’re excited to join the Woodley Park community and to have a super, super cute neighbor named Bei Bei.” The menu will be similar to Duke’s Grocery’s, with the addition of a few items such as fish and chips and a children’s menu. Kramer anticipates the new spot will open sometime this year after an interior rehab.

‘Younger’ is better: TV Land comedy hits all the marks TV Land — the home of endless “Roseanne,” “Gilligan’s Island” and “Golden Girls” reruns — isn’t the most obvious place to find a smart and funny sitcom about millennial culture. So I wasn’t expecting much from “Younger,” a TV Land original starring Sutton Foster as a 40-year-old recent divorcee who poses as a 26-year-old to get a job as an assistant in book publishing (because apparently no one in publishing has a job for a 40-something who quit the industry to be a stay-at-home mom). I won’t blame you if you stop reading after that sentence. The premise of “Younger” seems flimsy at best. Foster’s Liza, the mother of an 18-yearold, certainly looks youthful, but how could she fool other 20-somethings and peers who are her actual age? To make things more complicated, Liza starts dating a 26-year-old
tattoo artist named Josh (Nico Tortorella) and befriends a junior book editor named Kelsey (Hilary Duff), who takes Liza under her wing. Neither of them (nor their 20-something friends) can tell that Liza was actually born before the Internet was a thing. Yet “Younger,” which debuted last year and returned for a second season last month, manages to overcome its thin, implausible premise with sharp writing and unexpected insight into what life’s like both at 26 and 40. Much of the humor, of course, comes from Liza’s crash course in millennial culture: She clumsily dives into Twitter, awkwardly texts Josh and nearly dies in a CrossFit class. Foster imbues the character with a youthful enthusiasm and manages to believably play both sides of Liza. (Duff, on the other hand, is often unintentionally funny, playing Kelsey as if she’s aware she’s in a TV show.) Based on the Pamela Redmond Satran novel of the

same name and created by “Sex and the City’s” Darren Star, “Younger” moves at a quick pace that — especially as I binged all 10 episodes of Season 1 in a single weekend — makes it feel more like a feature-length romantic comedy than a traditional sitcom. Nearly every episode picks up right where the last one left off, making it the kind of show that would benefit from a Netflix-style release
rather than TV Land’s weekly schedule, with new episodes airing Wednesdays at 10 p.m. (Season 1 is available via most On Demand cable providers.) Beneath the deadening lack of racial diversity in American publishing lies a subtler, affiliated kind of redlining. Whether it’s a barrier constructed of ignorance or cemented by anxiety, it serves to keep most novelists — particularly most white novelists — working within the realm of their own racial heritage, creating characters that look like they do. Almost 150 years after Mark Twain sent Jim down the Mississippi River, we still can’t decide if that portrayal was a breakthrough or another inscription of racism. But no matter how much the country has changed, there are few towns in America as monochromatic as the towns in American fiction. Even as we try to encourage more diverse books, our eagerness to rain hellfire on authorial missteps and insensitivities has increased. Into this fraught discussion now comes Charlie Smith, a 67-year-old white Southerner, who has just published a gorgeous, harrowing novel called “Ginny Gall,” in which essentially all the characters are black. The protagonist is Delvin, born in 1913 in Tennessee. His mother unintentionally kills a white man and runs for her life, leaving her son behind. Without sentimentality or condescension, Smith follows Delvin across the South, through periods of peace and sparks of terror, months of romance and long trials of despair. RON CHARLES

Jay Z’s record label, Roc Nation, has filed a lawsuit against one of its former artists, Rita Ora, for failing to deliver contractually obligated albums. The New York Post notes that this suit comes just six weeks after Ora sued the label, claim-ing it abandoned her in favor of athletes and other artists. Roc Nation now claims that it spent more than $2 million to market Ora’s second album, which still has not been released. d. The label is suing Ora for $2.4 million. But Ora’s attorney told the Post that Jay Z has promised to let Ora out of her con-tract, which means this feud may soon be over. (EXPRESS)
