Airpnp finds toilets

In two weeks, Washingtonians who use Airbnb to rent out homes or rooms will find that things have gotten more expensive for guests. On Feb. 15, the company will begin charging a 14.5 percent city tax and giving it directly to the city government. D.C. will join a handful of cities where Airbnb collects local hotel or occupancy taxes. They rolled it out first in San Francisco in July and Portland, Ore., in October.

Here is some good news for everyone cursed with a tiny bladder. An app called Airpnp is hoping to be the Airbnb of the bathroom world. Instead of slinking into the nearest Starbucks, you can pull up the app (which originally started as a joke), find a nearby toilet and pay a fee to pee in peace. So far, though, there is just one option in D.C., a “Full Service Creative Agency” that will charge you a hefty $100 for the privilege of using its loo. R.S.

D.C. PUBLIC LIBRARY

A rendering shows one of two competing designs for the addition of a single floor to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library.

Modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and opened in 1972. Initial renderings envisioned an addition to be occupied by commercial or residential tenants whose rent payments would in theory subsidize the library’s renovation. However, an appraisal found that even the most lucrative use for the space would generate only paltry revenue and would present considerable complications to the whole project. Meanwhile, library advocates and members of the public

questioned why the public-private partnership was necessary. Activists raised concerns that the plan would leave too little space for the library and represent an unwise privatization of public space. The new plan will add one story to the library’s existing four, bringing the total usable space to 257,800 square feet. While the design phase could be well underway this year, funding and the timeline for construction remain in question. MIKE DeBONIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT A plan three years in the making to pay for a renovation of D.C.’s central library by adding new floors on top and renting them out has unraveled amid concerns about financing, practicality and historic preservation. Instead, D.C. Public Library trustees voted last week to pursue a more modest, publicly financed renovation that they say could transform the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library into a worldclass urban center of learning. “We have the opportunity now to really build the most spectacular destination for innovation, creativity and culture that this city, perhaps this country, has ever seen,” said Richard ReyesGavilan, the library system’s executive director. More radio problems found in Metro tunnels TRANSPORTATION In a recent test of radio equipment in Metro tunnels in Montgomery County, Md., firefighters underground were unable to communicate clearly with emergency workers on the surface, a problem similar to one that hampered D.C. first responders Jan. 12 during a fatal subway smoke incident near L’Enfant Plaza, officials said Sunday. The problem was discovered during a routine bi-monthly test of radio communication between firefighters in Red Line tunnels and others above ground, according to an email given to The Washington Post, dated Saturday and sent to “all personnel” in the county’s Fire and Rescue Service. The test found that radio communication between tunnels and the surface was “poor to non-existent,” according to the email, sent by Battalion Chief Michael Baltrotsky. Although radio-communication specialists are working to “remedy the problems,” Baltrotsky wrote, “there is no estimation on a time for complete repair.” Northwest of Friendship Heights on the MontgomeryD.C. border, there are seven Red Line stations in the county, in addition to four Montgomery stations at the line’s other end, from Silver Spring to Glenmont. “I’m surprised that they came up with these problems,” Pete Piringer, a spokesman for

Cables near L’Enfant Plaza station filled the tunnel with smoke on Jan. 12.

Metro rushes to install ‘low-smoke’ cables The electrical malfunction that filled a Metro tunnel with smoke involved a type of power cable that the transit agency had planned to remove from the subway over the next decade, replacing it with cable that is designed to emit fewer noxious gases if it starts to burn. The work of installing “low-smoke” power cables began a few years ago and was projected to continue until the early 2020s. However, since the older kind of cable was involved in the fatal tunnel calamity, the project has taken on new urgency, with engineers scrambling to accelerate the process, according to top managers at Metro. (TWP)

Montgomery Fire and Rescue, said Sunday. He said firefighters tested radio communication in Metro tunnels immediately after the Jan. 12 incident and found that it was working fine. Baltrotsky’s email refers to trouble involving “BDA coverage.” Piringer said BDAs are “bidirectional antennas,” which are built into the subway and used to relay radio signals.

Until the trouble is fixed, Baltrotsky wrote, “personnel are reminded to use radio relays.” By “radio relays,” he meant that firefighters with radios should position themselves at key points from a tunnel to the surface — one firefighter within sight of another — so they can relay information back and forth, according to Piringer. Four officers: Va. man had his hands up when he was shot by police

STRATFORD UNIVERSITY EXCELS AT TURNING OUT CULINARY PROFESSIONALS!

FAIRFAX COUNTY John Geer stood with his hands on top of the storm door of his Springfield, Va., house and calmly said to four Fairfax County police officers with guns pointed at him: “I don’t wanna get shot, ’cause I don’t want to die today.” How and why Geer died that afternoon in 2013 after police responded to a domestic dispute have remained a mystery, as they and prosecutors have declined to comment for 17 months. But Friday, under a court order, Fairfax released more than 11,000 pages of documents that shed new light. As one officer tried to ease Geer through the standoff, another, Adam Torres, shot and killed Geer, telling investigators that he saw Geer move his hands to his waist and thought he might

I don’t feel sorry for shooting the guy at all.” The other three officers, and a lieutenant watching from a distance, contradicted Torres’ account. The documents show they all agreed that Geer had his hands above his shoulders, did not move them to his waist and was unarmed when he was shot. The documents also show that Torres did not issue a warning. “It’s not good,” Officer David Parker, who was crouching 15 feet behind Torres, told investigators. “He killed that guy and he didn’t have to.” Geer’s father, Don Geer, also witnessed the shooting. “Four officers saw the same thing I did,” he said. Overhauling the mall REGION With the opening of the Landmark Regional Shopping Center, in 1965, Washingtonians finally had a mall to celebrate. As many as 30,000 people came. This was the heyday of mall construction in America. From the mid-1950s to 2005, about 1,500 malls were built in America. More than a dozen were built around the Beltway. It’s been a long slide since then. Experts predict that as many as half of America’s malls will be torn down or reconfigured. “There are 100 malls in this country that will always be dominant shopping destinations,” said Don Wood, chief executive of Federal Realty Investment Trust. “It’s Tysons Corner and Pentagon City in our area. … But there are 1,000 other malls in this country.” The dismantling of Washington’s lesser malls is already underway. The question is what to do with them. Once a prize, Landmark Mall is about 40 percent vacant and surrounded by so many parking spaces and road interchanges that it is virtually impossible to walk to from any angle. In its place, John Simon and Howard Hughes have proposed a 51-acre open-air neighborhood center with a 380-unit apartment building and a street grid lined with restaurants, sidewalks and trees. Simon said he envisions a “small-town, urban environment.” Other owners have made similar proposals to tear apart existing properties and turn them into streetscapes fashioned — however artificially — to look like Paris, Brooklyn or U Street. In Fairfax County, developer Edens had success turning a

former movie theater into the mixed-use Mosaic District. White Flint Mall’s owners began emptying the mall of tenants last year. In its place, they proposed offices, retail, residential units and a hotel. “It’s not going to be a mall,” Michael Cohen, an architect, said when he unveiled the plans in 2011. “It’s going to be more of a town, in a way.” But White Flint has become a cautionary tale. Like the vast majority of malls, it was built to accommodate department stores, and it did so by allowing them to own their own properties and have a say in any redevelopment plans. Now, 38 years after an agreement was struck with Lord & Taylor, it has badly stalled the White Flint Mall’s redevelopment. Even after dealing with such issues, there remains the question of whether turning a mall inside out will make it that much more successful. Real estate consultant Ronald Altoon said it does when the environment is welcoming enough that people are encouraged to walk past the stores. “The reason these open-air centers are doing so well is because people like being there. … It’s like walking in downtown Washington.” The owners of Springfield Mall aimed to create such an environment when they closed the mall in 2012 and began a two-year, $250 million renovation. Similarly, Laurel Mall has been replaced by the new Town Centre at Laurel, now 80 percent leased and growing. It might seem a lot like a mall, just outside. But no one opens malls anymore. Tom Fitzpatrick, who redeveloped the Laurel Mall, said: “All of those retailers, you could not have got them to come into an enclosed mall.” JONATHAN O’CONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Israeli pot creates buzz, but no high Israel — which has become a world leader in science on the medical uses of pot, including its varietal of marijuana that provides the medical benefits without the high — could become a major exporter of the stuff, experts say. But so far the government has allowed them to export only their knowledge — not the actual product. Top officials in the police force, army and executive branch “don’t want Israel to be seen all over the world as a country that exports weapons and cannabis,” said Michael Dor of the Israeli Health Ministry’s cannabis unit. The inability to export is limiting its ambitions: If Israel does not export, there is a risk that “the knowledge will leak outside Israel,” Dor said, “and the knowledge is worth a lot of money.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Benedict Cumberbatch, front, plays Alan Turing in “The Imitation Game.”

Actor urges U.K. to pardon gay men LONDON Oscar-nominated actor Benedict Cumberbatch has joined others in calling for the British government to pardon gay and bisexual men convicted in the past under the defunct “gross indecency” law. Their letter published Saturday in the Guardian praises the government for the 2013 pardon of World War II code breaker Alan Turing, whom Cumberbatch portrays in the movie “The Imitation Game.” Turing, who played a vital role in breaking the German wartime code, was praised by Winston Churchill as having made “the single biggest contribution” to the Allied victory in World War II. But Turing, a gay man in an era when homosexuality was illegal,

was convicted of gross indecency in 1952. Turing was pardoned by Queen Elizabeth II at the recommendation of the government, but the letter points out that 49,000 other men convicted under the same law also merit pardons. “The UK’s homophobic laws made the lives of generations of gay and bisexual men intolerable,” the letter said. The letter calls on Prince William, his wife, Kate, and other “young leaders of today” to take steps to pardon all of the men, including an estimated 15,000 thought to still be alive. NEW YORK CITY | A day after a massive warehouse fire erupted in Brooklyn, firefighters Sunday were still dousing the ruins, leaving the building and anything nearby covered in ice. Fire department officials said that air quality in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn was compromised by the blaze, which left one person injured from smoke inhalation.

Croatia is giving away ‘get out of debt free’ cards Starting today, thousands of Croatia’s poorest citizens will benefit from an unusual gift: They will have their debts wiped out. Named “fresh start,” the government scheme aims to help some of the 317,000 Croatians whose bank accounts have been blocked because of their debts. Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic, above, has persuaded multiple cities, companies, major telecommunications providers and banks to clear some of their citizens of their debt. The government will not refund the companies for their losses. To be eligible, a person’s debt must be lower than $5,100, and their monthly income should not be higher than $138. Deputy Prime Minister Milanka Opacic said 60,000 Croats would be eligible, according to Reuters. Some economists are skeptical. “If lenders think this can happen again, they will charge very high interest rates to low-income borrowers,” said Dean Baker, co-director of the Washington-based Center for Economic and Policy Research. Still, the Croatian government expects economic long-term benefits that will outweigh the short-term investment. Overall, the debt that is to be wiped out accounts for less than 1 percent of the debt of all Croats. But by reducing debt by less than 1 percent, Croatia frees nearly 20 percent of the country’s debtors from their obligations. RICK NOACK

WASHINGTONPOST.COM WORLDVIEWS

People stage a silent rally Sunday near Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s residence for Japanese hostage Kenji Goto, who was killed by the Islamic State.

Risks of engagement Hostage crisis underscores the perils of Japan’s tentative push into foreign affairs TOKYO The Japanese, who inhabit one of the safest countries in the world, have been brutally reminded that the world is a dangerous place. In a shock to a country that can feel insulated from distant geopolitical problems, two of its own have reportedly been killed by Islamic radicals in Syria, the latest apparently beheaded in a video posted online this weekend by militant websites. This island nation closed itself to the outside world for two centuries under samurai rule. Then rising militarism and occupation of neighboring countries preceding World War II had disastrous consequences, driving Japan back into an isolationist mindset. It has ventured out in fits and starts for the past two decades, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is pushing for Japan to play a larger international role, most controversially by seeking to loosen constitutional restraints on its military. As Japan has learned before,

Ukraine says 13 troops killed in fight with Russia-backed rebels

venturing out inevitably has risks. The question is whether those risks will drive Japan back into its shell. Analysts say it is too early to predict the impact of the Islamic State hostage crisis on government policy. Past experience suggests that Japan may, after some handwringing, continue what has been a very gradual expansion of its military role. “Contrary to what some people are arguing, the ongoing hostage crisis will have little to no effect as far as official policy or public opinion is concerned,” predicts Jun Okumura, an independent analyst. The crisis was sparked after Abe earlier this month pledged $200 million in humanitarian and development aid for the countries battling the Islamic State group. His words reached the Islamic State group, which in a video three days later accused Japan of donating money “to kill our women and children” and

Developments JAPAN MOURNS Appalled and saddened by news of journalist Kenji Goto’s purported beheading by Islamic State extremists, Japan ordered heightened security precautions Sunday. “I feel indignation over this immoral and heinous act of terrorism,” Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters.

JORDAN HOPES FOR SWAP Jordan renewed an offer Sunday to swap an al-Qaeda prisoner for Lt. Muath al-Kaseasbeh, a pilot who was seized by militants after his F-16 crashed near the Islamic State’s de facto capital, Raqqa, Syria, in December. (AP)

threatened to kill two Japanese men it held as hostages. It’s not the first time Japan faced such a crisis. In 2004, it sent several hundred troops to Iraq to help in the reconstruction. At home, many opposed the

deployment. In Iraq, half a dozen Japanese were kidnapped. One was found decapitated after then-Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi refused demands to pull the troops out of Iraq. Such violence is shocking anywhere, but particularly so in Japan, which has among the world’s lowest murder and gun ownership rates. The troubles of the Mideast can seem further away than in the United States or Europe. Unlike New York or Paris, Tokyo hasn’t been attacked by radicalized Muslims. A decade after that killing, Abe is trying to push the edge of the envelope. He laid the groundwork when his Cabinet reinterpreted the constitution last year to allow Japan to defend allies that come under attack. He still needs lawmakers to approve legal changes necessary to empower the military to do that. Heated debate is expected, but his party holds a solid majority in parliament and Abe may well get his way. KEN MORITSUGU (AP)

Wizards point guard John Wall has played in every game this season entering tonight.

THREE POINTERS

ALEX BRANDON (AP)

Next year’s best bets

Pains growing for Wall Wizards All-Star point guard has been playing through illness, injuries and migraines WIZARDS At times, it seems as if John Wall is tireless, careening down the court with reckless abandon to spark the Wizards’ attack. Right now, however, the AllStar guard is running on empty, hobbled by a variety of maladies that may keep him out of tonight’s game against the Charlotte Hornets at the Verizon Center (7 p.m., CSN). “The way I’m feeling now, I’m going to rest and decide what I’m going to do on Monday,” Wall said after Saturday’s overtime loss to Toronto. Wall’s injuries can be traced back to December, when he hurt his ankle in a game against Miami. He then was hampered by a sore left Achilles tendon, and on

last week’s West Coast trip, Wall again rolled his ankle against the Lakers when he stepped on a cameraman’s foot. “I’m used to getting through things, but when you resprain it and you kind of aggravate it on the verge of getting better, you have to go back to step one and that’s the aggravating part,” Wall said. On top of all that, Wall has a cold and migraine headaches that are affected by the bright lights of basketball arenas and TV cameras. He said that he was going to sit and watch football on Sunday in the hopes of getting better. Wall’s on-court performance hasn’t been dampened by his injuries — he tallied 28 points,

First look at Hornets Through a quirk in the schedule, tonight marks the first time this season Washington faces division rival Charlotte. The Hornets (20-27) were supposed to be an Eastern Conference dark horse after acquiring guard Lance Stephenson, but he’s on the trading block and Charlotte is clinging to the final playoff spot in the East. (E.S.)

12 assists and eight rebounds as the Wizards nearly erased a 20-point deficit against the Raptors. “This was a big game that I wanted to play, because I know how much it meant to our team,” he said.

Wall has tried to stay tough in the face of his aching body, but his teammates understand that these are the dog days of the season. “I ain’t going to lie, we’re all beat up,” center Marcin Gortat said. “We’re all tired. We’re hitting the wall.” If Wall does take a much-deserved day off to help his body, the onus will fall on his teammates to pick up the slack. “I just have to be more aggressive,” guard Bradley Beal said. “We know John’s our leader and if he doesn’t play, we all have to step up, not just me, but I’ll take it more personal, take it as more of a challenge for me to step up as well and try to put the team on my back.” ELLIOTT SMITH (FOR EXPRESS)

3 Buffalo Bills 2014 record: 9-7

Led by Mario Williams, the Bills have the best pass rush in the league. A move for a veteran QB could turn this team into a contender.

2 Houston Texans 2014 record: 9-7

With the NFL’s best defensive player, J.J. Watt, and a top-five rushing attack, the Texans just need to find a QB that won’t screw this up.

1 Philadelphia Eagles 2014 record: 10-6

In the past two seasons, QB Nick Foles is 14-4 in his starts. Chip Kelly’s unorthodox fast-paced offense has proven to be sustainable in the NFL.

Hawks end a perfect month

The Hawks head into February with the NBA’s best record and savoring a bit of NBA history. Atlanta stretched its overall winning streak to 19 straight with a gritty 91-85 victory over the 76ers on Saturday. “We are a resilient group,” All-Star center Al Horford, left, said. According to STATS, the Hawks (40-8) are the first team in NBA history to win 17 games without a loss over a single month. Four teams have put together a 16-0 mark, including the Spurs last year. Ovechkin nets 30 goals for 10th straight season

PATRICK McDERMOTT (NHLI VIA GETTY IMAGES)

Capitals star Alex Ovechkin scored twice Sunday, giving him a league-leading 31 goals and becoming the fifth player in NHL history to start his career with 10 30-goal seasons. But the milestone came in a 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Blues. Ovechkin, who added an assist, has 15 goals in his past 15 games. Karl Alzner also scored for Washington, which is 1-4-2 in its past seven. Justin Peters made 36 saves. For the Blues, Alexander Steen had two goals and an assist and Brian Elliot stopped 33 shots. St. Louis has won five straight and 10 of 11. (AP)

President Barack Obama discussed the controversy over deflated footballs Sunday and said the NFL should be considering how officials can control game balls. Asked if it was cheating, he said: “If you break the rules then you break the rules.” (AP)

Djokovic wins fifth title in Melbourne, making Murray runner-up again TENNIS Novak Djokovic won his fifth Australian Open title and his eighth career Grand Slam while extending Andy Murray’s misery at Melbourne Park. Djokovic beat Murray 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-0 in Sunday’s final, relegating the Scotsman to runner-up status for the fourth time in four tries in the Australian Open final. Murray had lost

twice previously to Djokovic — in 2011 and 2013 — and to Roger Federer in 2010. The No. 1-ranked Djokovic, meanwhile, is a perfect 5-for-5 in Australian Open finals. “There were a lot of turning points in the match,” Djokovic said. “Regardless of the record I have here, we both knew we had equal chances to win. It was a cat-and-mouse fight — it always is with us.” Djokovic swung momentum in a close match with a service break in the eighth game of the third set, winning four

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘Earth: A New Wild’ 9 p.m. Wednesday on PBS

Conservation scientist Dr. M. Sanjayan hosts this five-part series that explores how humans threaten the planet’s animals, but also provides powerful examples of how the two are able to thrive side by side.

From left, Hudson Yang, Ian Chen, Constance Wu, Randall Park and Forrest Wheeler are an Asian-American family. Hopefully “Fresh Off the Boat” is about more than that. ABC

2 ‘Allegiance’ 10 p.m. Thursday on NBC

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

‘Fresh Off the Boat’: ABC navigates a sea of stereotypes TV is a land of ethnic stereotypes. Hello, oversexed Latina Sofia Vergara! Greetings, oversexed rapper son of “Empire!” Now we have the AsianAmerican Huang family of ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat” (premieres Wednesday at 8 p.m., then moves to Tuesdays at 8 p.m.) The Huangs have left Washington, D.C., for

overwhelmingly Caucasian Orlando, Fla., where the hapless father (Randall Park, “The Interview’s” Kim Jong Un) has opened a steakhouse. He nods his head, grins a lot and foolishly believes his restaurant’s dismal business will pick up if he hires a white host. Overbearing Tiger Mom (Constance Wu) wants her kids to excel “so you can make a lot of money.” So, yes, kinda stereotypical. But not always. At middle school, a student calls eldest son Eddie (Hudson Yang) a

$31.9M

racial slur. Eddie curses him out and gets into a fight. The principal summons the Huangs to discuss how Eddie should be punished, but outraged mom and dad want to know how the slur slinger will be disciplined. That’s when “Fresh” goes beyond making jokes out of stereotypes, and taps into the pain of starting over in a notalways-welcoming land. Then dad offers the principal a coupon for a free onion blossom with any entree at the steakhouse. Will “Fresh” go deep or stick to shallow jokes? At one point, the father, speaking of his eatery, says, “I think we really have something here.” If the show can turn its cartoonish characters into real people, ABC might really have something here, too. Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse.

Quick take Based on a memoir by restaurateur and D.C. native Eddie Huang, this single-camera sitcom from creator Nahnatchka Khan devotes its first few episodes to blunt examples of pop-culture absorption. The show seems determined to play up its most obvious jokes, terrified that viewers might get bored once the child actor stops doing cute things like swaggering around to 1990s rap. (Actually, Constance Wu’s character as the family matriarch with a strange Stephen King fixation has much more potential for laughs.) “Fresh Off the Boat” (which is narrated by the grown-up Eddie Huang himself) wants to be both “black-ish” and “The Goldbergs” — and it works fairly OK as a companion piece to either. But it’s a lot better show when it occasionally stops going for just the easy jokes and aims for a subtler, sharper line of comment. HANK STUEVER

The box office take of “American Sniper” this weekend, making it the biggest Super Bowl weekend gross ever. According to studio estimates Sunday, the Clint Eastwood film narrowly surpassed the previous record holder: “Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert,” which earned $31.1 million in 2008. “Sniper” has now made $248.9 million in the six weeks since its release, making it the most lucrative war movie without adjusting for inflation. ‘Gotham’s’ Penguin makes evil his job

TELEVISION Though he plays the slimy villain Penguin on Fox’s “Gotham,” Robin Lord Taylor is decidedly un-villainous. He’s not even aggressive. “I avoid conflict in my real life at all times,” he says. “My acting teacher called me ‘a fixer’: ‘You want to fix everything and make it OK.’ ” Yet since last fall’s premiere of “Gotham” (8 p.m. Mondays), Taylor has infused his role with toadying creepiness, ensuring he steals every scene he’s in. What Taylor delivers is a striver, schemer and survivor who had been bullied his whole life. His shimmying gait — said to look like a penguin’s — resulted when his then-boss, crime queen Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), flew into a rage and bashed his right knee with a rod. That was Penguin’s turning point. “He’s finally decided that his ambition won’t let him be that person ever again,” Taylor says. T he secret beh i nd h is

But he’s still surprised. “I can’t believe any of this is happening,” Taylor marvels. “It’s the good kind of overwhelming, the good kind of daunting, the good kind of scary.” Kind of like his performance. “You might be cool, but you’ll never be ‘include your dogs in your official astronaut photo’ cool” @RTPHOKIE accurately describes the official NASA portrait

of retired astronaut Leland Melvin. The photo, featuring Melvin and his two dogs, Jake and Scout, went viral last week after a journalist spotted it and tweeted it out to the masses. Melvin, who logged about 10 million miles in space since being selected as an astronaut in 1998, was forced to retire after he went deaf during a training exercise. Emergency surgery resulted in partial recovery of his hearing, but he was still disqualified from flying into space. Melvin is now head of NASA Education, which allows him to host the show “Child Genius” on Lifetime. He is also the co-chair of a White House education task force.

Several of our studies seek to better understand the causes of depression and evaluate the mechanisms in the brain that are related to rapid antidepressant improvement. These studies enroll depressed persons between the ages of 18 and 65 for an inpatient period of 2- to 3-months. Researchers will evaluate how the experimental medication ketamine, versus placebo, affects glutamate in the brain and whether a rapid reduction of depressive symptoms (within hours) can be achieved and sustained.

Aw — nope, it’s not even cute when kids do it Two 12-year-old girls snuck onto Justin Bieber’s Beverly Hills, Calif., property last Saturday, TMZ reported. The Bieber fans were celebrating a birthday by sneaking in through an open gate, where they encountered the singer and his friends at the pool. Bieber “berated them,” TMZ wrote, and took their cellphones. The girls left, and police were not called. The two retrieved the phones a few days later. (EXPRESS)

Justin Timberlake celebrated his birthday this weekend, but there was another birth date on his mind — that of his future son or daughter. The superstar shared a picture of himself kissing a bulging belly — presumably belonging to his wife, actress Jessica Biel — on Instagram on Saturday, his 34th birthday. He wrote that he was getting the greatest gift ever this year and added, “CAN’T WAIT.” In regards to the baby’s sex Timberlake wrote, “#BoyOrGirl #YouNeverKnow #WeDon’tEvenKnow #WeAreTaking Bets.” The Grammy-winning Timberlake married Biel in 2012, having dated since 2007. It will be the first child for both. Biel’s pregnancy has been rumored for months but Timberlake’s post is the first official confirmation from the couple. (AP)
